This poster describes a research project in progress to map the historical and current published and grey literature of the field of knowledge management/knowledge sciences. The research describes the mapping of 11,820 JASIS papers to the landscape of knowledge sciences. The mapping is grounded on the automated classification and automated indexing of the individual papers leveraging a semantic profile and the SAS Content Categorization Suite. The semantic profile was created from the knowledge sciences classification scheme and thesaurus developed by Bedford (2015). The results suggest that JASIS papers and the research being published by ASIST members have some alignment with the field of knowledge sciences. The research is concentrated in three primary facets, including (1) Knowledge Asset Management; (2) Knowledge Technologies; and (3) Communities and Collaboration. This paper proposes a practical seven‐layer model that provides a holistic framework for creation an optimal foundation for organizational knowledge management (KM). The research corpus consists of three data collection tools; In the physical field we conducted personal interviews and a focus groups with 52 KM professionals. In the online arena we conducted a web ethnography, in which we surveyed tens of thousands of posts and comments which were posted in two virtual KM groups on the Facebook social network. The research is based on the qualitative‐constructivist paradigm. The data were analyzed according to the thematic analysis method, relying on the grounded theory approach. The proposed conceptual framework contributes to the empirical knowledge of the KM field, and may stand to guide practitioners in successful implementation of KM practices in organizations. ABSTRACT Professional associations across various fields have largely been struggling to stay relevant. Many have been watching a steady decline in membership numbers over the years. In many cases, members who join do not renew their membership. Existing members complain about the association not giving enough value for their membership dues. While the association does all the right things that it has been doing for the years since its existence, there is often a gap in what a changing membership base or potential audience for membership demands and what the association is able to deliver. In such a scenario, what must associations do to change the tide, to continue to stay relevant, to stem the decline, and to attract new members, and retain the ones they have? Using literature from knowledge management (KM), especially Agarwal & Marouf (2014)'s KM adoption framework, Nonaka & Takeuchi (1995)'s SECI model, and Agarwal & Islam (2014)'s KM Tools framework, and a study of the websites of professional associations in library and information science, this paper proposes a thriving KM strategy as a way for professional associations to not just survive, but to thrive. The greatest challenge for many organizations today is not the acquisition, organization, and storage of information, but rather the ability to transform such information into useful knowledge as well as the application and measurement of it. This paper discusses effective knowledge transfer in a training environment and the inherent limitations in using only quantitative measures as a tool of knowledge transfer measurement. By examining the measurement tool of a major U.S.‐based airline, this study identifies disparity in peer and observer behavior assessment to understand other important factors that impact the measurement of knowledge transfer. Intangible cultural heritage (ICH) contains rich knowledge, and the effective organization and management of ICH knowledge is the foundation for the protection and inheritance of ICH. The development of semantic Web technology changes the way of knowledge representation and expression and provides new ideas and methods for the organizing and sharing of ICH knowledge. This paper describes a research project: to model and manage the ICH knowledge by publishing the knowledge as linked data. Firstly, a knowledge ontology was designed to reveal and standardize the concept, attribute and relationship of ICH knowledge elements. Then, we converted the knowledge to RDF data basted on the knowledge ontology and linked the entities with DBpedia and GeoNames. Finally, taking the ICH in Hubei province as an example, the methodology was used to create an RDF dataset which published as linked open data, and develop a knowledge service platform based on the linked data service. The research has promoted the standardization of knowledge management of ICH in China, which is of great significance for the protection and dissemination of ICH. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

While developments in information technology enable exciting new potentials, they may, in the process, inadvertently violate important values such as autonomy or privacy. Responsible, ethical approaches to technology warrant the use of critical perspectives in evaluating our technological practices and artifacts. Key among such artifacts are information standards, influential documents that represent and perpetuate community agreements on ideal practice. In critically examining standards, values represent a promising conceptual lens. This paper advances the use of value analysis on information standards, particularly those devoted to knowledge organization. Value analysis is a methodological approach that guides the elicitation of values from artifacts. Two case studies demonstrate the application of value analysis to knowledge organization standards and their resulting data, and show how values and their implications can be discerned from these information artifacts. Value analysis must next be extended beyond standards as documents to examine the fuller ecosystem within which information standards are situated and enacted in order to fully understand their implications, uphold important community values, and maintain ethical information practices. Research published during the last two decades has frequently discussed how Knowledge Management (KM) is important for libraries. However, we do not know the extent to which KM forms a part of Library and Information Science (LIS) research. In this study, we looked for KM articles published in top LIS journals since 2000. We analyzed publication trends, and the distribution of articles by KM‐related terms used, region/country and information‐setting type. We also identified the top‐cited KM articles published in these LIS journals. 672 KM‐related articles (only 3.84%) were found within the 17,491 articles published in these LIS journals. This low percentage shows that while it might seem like LIS people are advocating for KM in libraries and other information settings, we find that despite the synergies, KM is yet to find a broader place within other LIS concerns. Over the years, information science professionals have been studying biases in Knowledge Organization Systems (KOS), for example, bibliographic classifications. The robustness of classifications has been examined in diverse measures, ranging from the representation of race, gender, ethnic minorities, to indigenous peoples. In this study, we aim at (a) uncovering implicit assumptions about minorities in everyday taxonomies; (b) comparing and reconciling these different taxonomies. Specifically, we study the use case of Taiwanese Indigenous Peoples' tribe classifications and the indigenous constituencies of the legislature electoral representation. We compare four finer‐grained taxonomies for indigenous people with the coarse‐grained indigenous peoples' electoral constituencies that only recognize two regions (Lowland, Highland). The four taxonomies are: the recognized tribes in the past, the recognized tribes in the present, other possible tribes, and re‐scaled groups based on population. We employ a logic‐based taxonomy alignment approach using Region Connection Calculus (RCC‐5) relations to align these taxonomies. Our results show different options when modeling and interpreting the use case of Indigenous Taiwan constituencies, and also demonstrate that multiple perspectives can be preserved and co‐exist in our merged taxonomic representations. What motivates data management strategies of scientific collaborations? In this paper, we argue that infrastructures for data management are designed to support scientific work per se and to perform a variety of social functions. We present findings from a longitudinal ethnographic case study of a large, multidisciplinary, distributed scientific project studying subseafloor microbial life. A critical element of this project's plan for data management is to construct an online portal that includes a data registry and data repository. We found that a range of factors motivate the construction of these systems and their features. In addition to scientific concerns for curation and accessibility of diverse and scarce data, we argue that the building of the registry and repository is also motivated by social factors. One factor is the attempt to build a community of domain researchers to endure beyond the end of this project in 2020. Another is the potential use of the registry and database as tools to demonstrate the productivity of the project in negotiations about the allocation of ocean drilling cruise resources. Despite operating in complex, dynamic, and frequently changing environments, organizations have a vested interest in making sure that knowledge created today is available for use tomorrow. This paper describes a case study of knowledge management (KM) at the end of the Iraq war, where the breadth and depth of KM was extreme. KM activities are analyzed using Anderson's KM and Kling's social informatics frameworks. The results reveal that many of the challenges mirror the socio-technical interdependencies identified in other organizational settings and suggests that lessons learned from this extreme case can be used to inform KM practices of information professionals in non-combat environments. The current study proceeds from a transdisciplinary, ecological and systemic angle as it undertakes to interrogate the information skills of users who are uninitiated and untrained to a competitive intelligence model (and specifically, to the French model, which proposes a more generic and all-encompassing approach than other models). In addition to outlining a framework for assessing these informactors' performance within the context of the informational act, this paper proposes new definitions for the terms "strategic information" and "information intelligence", as a ways to further investigate the pioneering concept of "information transculture" - a concept which stems from the confluence of various generic approaches to information literacy and which is set forth here for the first time. Non-profit organizations (NPOs) must manage knowledge to be relevant, sustainable and competitive. The published literature suggests that stories can be effective for sharing knowledge and making tacit knowledge explicit; however, researchers have not examined storytelling as a knowledge management practice in NPOs in any depth. Similarly, few studies explore the roles of social media in NPOs, including their usefulness for knowledge management practices. This paper reports the results of a research study that examined how NPOs are using social media, with a particular focus on knowledge management practices. Qualitative interviews with 16 staff members working in a range of NPO environments (such as health, library and social services organizations) were conducted. The findings point to the value of storytelling for sharing the organization's mission, for monitoring the NPOs reach into the community, and as a mechanism for gathering knowledge from clients and other key stakeholders. This poster paper makes a case for the use of relational databases as a data curation tool, especially for datasets that are published separately but can be used together due to a common identifier scheme and shared attributes. The Correlates of War datasets are used as an illustrative example to show how the normalization process results in a design with greater data reusability, while check constraints and foreign key constraints can improve data quality. The speed of change is increasing at a dynamic pace particularly in the field of information science. While the speed of change is not a variable that can be manipulated, we can begin to harness knowledge management processes and theories to better embrace change and build an information‐resilient society to recover from the damage caused by public crises. The panelists discuss the challenges that the society is facing during a public crisis and the KM needs in the crisis scenarios. Knowledge work in the library is guided by a complex array of maps that outline how work should be done, who should do it, and how staff should think and behave. These maps originate from human and non‐human actors in the work system, including management, staff, patrons, technology, and physical space. In this study, six public library staff engaged in think‐alouds and semi‐structured interviews aimed at learning more about the function and content of these maps, how these maps were acquired, the challenges staff faced in trying to follow these maps, and how staff responded to these challenges. Results suggest how library management can support staff as they attempt to navigate the affordances and constraints of these maps—work that is key to sustained library resilience. This panel builds on the momentum of previous SIG/CR workshops towards examining the framing and scaffolding of knowledge in order to understand its bearing on seeking, reception, circulation and use of knowledge in research and knowledge organization systems. It features reports of research undertaken in North America and Europe relating to social and economic classifications of the International Labour Organization of the United Nations. It considers how the narrative arc of the field of information science exists in relation to social divisions of labour represented in occupational classification. In the past few years, many researchers and practitioners have shown the value of applying knowledge management (KM) in libraries and other information settings – so as to serve the patron better and to innovate services. However, it is unclear to what extent has mainstream KM literature embraced LIS research as a domain within KM. In this research, we seek to ascertain the place of the LIS field in KM journals by analysing what the top KM journals – as identified by Google Scholar – have published on LIS in the last two decades since the year 2000. We analysed the publication trends, and the distribution of these articles by LIS‐related terms used, region/country and information setting type. We also identified the top‐cited LIS articles from within these and their coverage in different journals and in different years. 83 LIS‐related articles were found within the 4601 research articles published in top KM journals. Only 1.8% of the KM articles were LIS‐related. By showing the relatively low coverage of LIS within KM research, the study demonstrates that LIS researchers/practitioners need to do more to be recognized as an important area within KM. Survivorship is arguably the most important endpoint in a cancer clinical trial. Our goal is to compare the extent to which survivorship concepts within existing medical knowledge resources adequately capture how authors describe survivorship when reporting the inclusion criterion and outcomes from studies of 5 breast cancer treatments. Results show that MESH and the NCI thesauri provide good coverage with respect to set of core survivorship concepts that appear frequently in text; further work, however, is required to account for modifiers used by authors so that noun phrases in literature are accurately aligned with the corresponding concept in a given ontology. ABSTRACT Development of Internet technologies has empowered ordinary users to create, contribute, share and connect with other members of the community. As users learn to exploit the potential of networked communications, they participate in a process, which facilitates a shift from individual to collective contributions and introduces an opportunity for multi-vocal and multi-faceted representation of cultural heritage. Open access to crowdsourced collections requires reconsideration of the traditional authoritative approach of cultural heritage institutions. The arduous nature of the work rendered voluntarily in cultural heritage crowdsourcing initiatives calls for reconsideration of power relationships and giving power to devoted contributors supported by modern 'intelligent' technology to regulate the process of representation and organization. Taking into consideration the fact that crowdsourced data are not without flaws, the question is how to better utilize the collective intelligence to create quality information. In this context, various issues such as power, control, trust, inter-contributor consensus, heterogeneity of opinions will be raised and discussed by the panelists. Each of the panelists comes from a different field of expertise (Computer science, Information science, Economics, Communication studies, cultural heritage) and various cultural backgrounds and geographical locations (United States, Europe and Israel). ABSTRACT Community Question and Answering (CQA) is a well-known platform for knowledge sharing and social learning. CQA services have expanded into the education sector, where school students are the main users. Here, CQA functions as a non-traditional learning environment in which students use their own knowledge to construct the knowledge base. However, there have been cases where some questions are not answered within such a Q&A system. This failure may occur if a question is unclear, complex, inappropriate, or unrelated to the subject in which it is contextualized. While experts do not answer posted questions, co-users moderate responses and help maintain answer quality. However, due to the presence of users from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds, many questions remain unanswered. The current study analyzes and explores the failed questions collected from Brainly, a social learning Q&A platform for school students. The quality of 1,000 questions extracted from this service is analyzed based on human-based ratings and extracted textual features. The findings show that a relationship can be drawn between the non-textual assessment results and the objective textually extracted features. This further encourages the study of why a question might be of poor quality. The findings also show which subjects contain the highest number of unanswered questions. These results will further help us to understand how questions should be restructured to obtain answers from their askers' peers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ABSTRACT A workforce mapping project was carried out in the UK between August 2014 and October 2015. It was commissioned by the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP) and the Archives and Records Association (ARA) to enhance understanding of the nation's workforce in Library, Archives, Records, Information Management, Knowledge Management and related professional roles. Based on the statistical analysis of secondary data sources such as the UK Labour Force Survey, as well as responses to an online survey, a long-needed data baseline was produced by a project team of six from Edinburgh Napier University. Key findings relate to an estimated population of 86,376 workers, their general demographics, qualifications and memberships and the diversity of the population as a whole. Of particular interest are the findings on pay differences and seniority according to gender, and the low ethnic diversity of the population surveyed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Effective management of all knowledge produced within an organization is frequently identified as a key criteria for innovation of new products and services within the organization. Academic libraries are beginning to realize the importance of knowledge management (KM) in this regard. However, there aren't any quantitative studies studying KM and service innovation in the context of libraries. Islam, Agarwal and Ikeda came up with a framework for knowledge management for service innovation in academic libraries (KMSIL). Through a survey of 107 librarians from 39 countries, this study seeks to investigate the effect of KM (and each phase of the KM cycle) on service innovation. This panel provides a state of the art review of knowledge management (KM) education approaches in the LIS field. The panelists will share thoughts and experiences pertaining to the current treatment of knowledge management concepts in Library and Information Science education. The panel is comprised of professionals who have experience in both the knowledge management and LIS disciplines, in both academic and in practical roles. "Women Weave the Web" was the 2014 digital action campaign sponsored by World Pulse, "? the leading network using the power of digital media to connect women worldwide and bring them a global voice" (World Pulse 2014). In three ten-week phases, women were encouraged to submit entries using on-line journals about their experiences with digital access, digital literacy and digital empowerment. During the seven-month campaign, 590 journal entries from women in 71 countries were analyzed to make recommendations not only concerning digital inclusion, but also library development, internet affordability, internet rights, and technology related violence against women. Because women were responding to campaign prompts, they contributed to solutions within the on-line community, as well as informed the larger goals of the organization and its advocacy partners. A knowledge management framework was used alongside a social constructionist approach to analyze the entries. This approach emphasizes the construction of knowledge from the collective commentary by the community. Data visualization was used to address issues related to this large qualitative data set in a timely manner consistent with organizational goals. Recommendations produced through the data analysis highlight real solutions to global problems, while maintaining the integrity of individual experiences. Included in campaign advocacy packages, graphic summaries of recommendations, representative quotes and links to original entries present the information in layers that increase the utility of this powerful and unique knowledge collection. As qualitative material becomes more accessible online, organizations need trustworthy, timely methods that will allow them to utilize these rich data sets for knowledge creation that can inform organizational goals. Illustrations of the type of analysis used in the "Women Weave the Web" campaign can be important resources for building an analysis framework that meets the demands of big qualitative data. While much recent work on community archives assumes that independent, grassroots archival organizations better match the priorities and needs of local communities than mainstream government or university repositories, little empirical work has been done to confirm this assumption. This study begins to remedy this gap by exploring what one subgroup of users of one community archive (the South Asian American Digital Archive or SAADA) would like to see the archive collect through a content analysis of responses given by South Asian American undergraduates to the questions of what they wish to know more about their grandparents' generation and what they would like their grandchildren to know about them. The analysis uncovered several key themes about the past of interest to the subpopulation: information about specific relatives, major historical events in South Asia, economic, cultural, and racial barriers their parents or grandparents faced when they came to the U.S., and reasons for leaving South Asia. It also uncovered several areas that participants would like future generations to know about the present: social justice activism, blending two cultures, struggling to fit in as a minority, the impact of technological change, and discrimination in the wake of September 11, 2001. Blogging and Facebook have gained increasing recognition as tools to support online information sharing and management. This study examined if, and in which aspects, blogs and Facebook scaffold and/or consolidate student users' knowledge capture, sharing and application during their internship. A mixed-methods design was employed to investigate users' practices and perceptions of blogs and Facebook in online information management. The study found that users generally hold positive perception on using blogs and Facebook for online knowledge management. In particular, Facebook appears to be a more facilitating platform for users to reflect upon prior knowledge, capture new experiences and provide feedback that is constructive to cultivating knowledge sharing environment. It was found that Facebook support the expression of social support among users, thereby reinforcing their motivation in participating in knowledge management processes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The publishing of knowledge organization systems (KOS) as Linked Open Data (LOD) has become a well-accepted practice during the last five years. More than 1,000 thesauri, classifications, taxonomies, ontologies, term lists, and other types of KOS are available as LOD datasets. However, there are still visible and invisible barriers for the real endusers (i.e., those other than the creators and publishers of KOS products) to access and use the LOD KOS. More importantly, the question arises as to how the LOD KOS can be used as more than traditional "controlled vocabularies" or function as more than just "value vocabularies" in the Semantic Web. Of course, the new functions are made possible because of the use of Semantic Web standards such as SKOS, OWL, RDFS, and SPARQL, but what are the appropriate practices for the implementation, extension, access, and use of these standards in the final deliverables? Knowledge organization systems (KOS) are the key elements for interlinking the values of Linked Data datasets. Existing KOS products (including well-known thesauri and classification systems) need to be transformed into the constructs of Linked Data services, much more beyond what a traditional thesaurus or classification were/are developed, but how? What can these Linked Data KOS bring to various information services? The panelists will share their experiences and lessons learned. The presentation starts from the processes that have been developed to build, maintain, and publish a newly derived taxonomy using W3C SKOS standard, to make it extensible and scalable to support new information services in scholarly publishing workflow. The next presentation will share experiences and lessons learned from the implementation of a platform built for publishing and distribution of multiple KOS and for automatic indexing using these KOS. The third case is a Linked Data bibliographic service, a RDF-aware system and a mash up application which relies on the use of a multilingual thesaurus that has been published and maintained as a Linked Data dataset, and has been mapped to more than ten KOS. For the datasets that have not used standardized KOS, the panel will present methods that can be applied when generating or deriving project-focused micro-thesauri from the Linked Data KOS and give an overview of the use cases of Linked Data KOS in information services.
