Knowledge Management Systems enhance innovation, increase operational efficiency, and improve decisionmaking in business organisations. The administrative and resource overheads required to implement and maintain such systems, however, inherently exclude the smallest of firms from reaping these benefits. This paper aims to identify, evaluate, and summarize the distribution of research on knowledge management and supporting systems across business size classifications with a particular focus on micro-enterprises. It also seeks to establish if existing knowledge management models, practices, and systems have invested due consideration in their design to cater for the limited resources typically found in the micro-enterprise. It contributes new insight into the applicability of knowledge management systems to micro-enterprises and stimulates a possible re-think of how such systems can cater for the specific constraints of this prolific business type. This taxonomy provides a thorough analysis of 168 research papers from a total of 10511 papers published in reputable conference proceedings since 2012. It focuses on key knowledge management themes covered, including the size of the enterprise, the adoption challenges, the potential benefits, the technologies used, and the aspects of the knowledge management cycle that are being employed. Furthermore, it draws on this analysis to highlight the appropriateness of existing knowledge management systems to the distinctive risk and opportunity characteristics of the micro-enterprise. Nowadays, competition is more among supply chains (SCs) than between individual firms. So, knowledge is a critical resource that has to be managed properly not only in single companies but also across SCs. Managing knowledge within a SC can help companies to promote better use of resources and achieve better value for customers. From a knowledge management (KM) perspective, this implies a shift of focus, from traditional intra-organizational KM practices to inter-organizational KM. However, on this issue, the current KM literature is very varied, and studies have taken completely different directions. There is a lack even of basic definitions and classifications, as is the case of the notion of KM practice and its application to the case of SCs. The existing literature surveys(for example, BhosaleandKant, 2016, Pérez-Salazaret al., 2019, CerchioneandEsposito, 2016)provide fragmented views, and a unified vision or perspective on this topic has not emerged so far.This study proposes a systematic approachtothe KM literature on supply chains. A systematic literature review was performed, and a descriptive analysis of the selected papers was presented to show the most importantly covered or uncovered topics in KM-SC aspect. More than 800 papers indexed in international citational databases (i.e. Scopus and WoS) published in the last 20 years were selected and analyzed, and their content classified. Some of the points that emerged are particularly important: a) the definitionsand classifications of KM practices that are or can be adopted in SCs, which proves to be a problematic issue in the literature; b) the main processes that are detected for KM in SCs, and those that, although important in principle, are still understudied; and c) the importance and trend of researches in the inter-organizational KM practices in SCs. In this paper we try to reflect on how one of the financial phenomena of the last twenty years, namely cryptocurrencies, has been analysed by the scientific community of the Knowledge Management (KM) field. The issue is relevant because the raise of cryptocurrencies as an economic asset has been occurring in a time in which KM gained social prominence. And also because the evolution of cryptocurrencies should be also related to knowledge about their own value. Within this context, we present a literature review on papers that exist in the SCOPUS database about cryptocurrencies and KM. After analysing those papers, the general idea is that KM is very far away from the cryptocurrency phenomenon; the reason may be that it is very difficult to use the more common models available on KM to analyse cryptocurrencies; also the economic and social agents that might be interested in KM are not those who invest in cryptocurrencies; finally, the data available on cryptocurrencies are mostly speculative, and it is very difficult to make any scientific study on them. These conclusions may be of interest for the KM community at large, because they indicate a new subfield of research, and for practitioners, because they mean that there is not much science in the evolution of cryptocurrencies themselves. Finally, for policymakers, the findings mean the expanding the possibility of use of cryptocurrencies in societies may be extremely risky given their volatility and the lack of precise scientific knowledge about them. This paper discusses the contrast in approach to agriculture knowledge management (AKM) empirical research between mainstream Knowledge Management (KM) scholars and scholars from non-KM fields, and the implications of this contrast to the development of AKM scholarship. The paper uses a systematic literature review, gathering papers from both mainstream KM literature and non-KM literature. A total of 44 peer-reviewed publications were analysed. Of these, 12 publications were from the mainstream KM literature while 32 publications were from the wider non-KM literature but had an agriculture knowledge management focus. While KM scholars predominantly conducted AKM research in structured, organized settings such as agriculture organisations and agri-business enterprises, scholars from non-KM fields, mostly agriculture, conducted AKM research in less formal settings, engaging farmers and local communities in research and exploring the indigenous knowledge that arises out of such communities. This contrast shows a disconnect in the studies conducted by the two groups of scholars. The disconnect is also reflected in the fact that the scholars from the different backgrounds do not cite one another and hence AKM literature does not have any coherent development. This paper summarize three literature reviews on topic of knowledge management in supply chain which reviewed 176 papers in between 1960 to 2015. These reviews highlight literature focus and identify gaps for further research. In this paper the methodology and literature sources are analyzed and used to review 23 newly identified papers from time span 2016 to 2017 providing add-on to previous literature reviews and showing to what extend identified gaps were solved or not. Paper shows that positive effect of knowledge management on supply chain is shown in majority of studies focused on performance. It also confirms that majority of studies use quantitative methodologies. Another findings are that factors affecting knowledge management phases are not analyzed enough as well as its barriers and also that human performance and cultural effects need a systematic analysis in their impact of knowledge management in supply chain performance. The purpose of this paper is analysing and comparing all the academic papers in the proceedings of the ECKM conference in Barcelona 2017. We classified the papers according to five chosen philosophy of science frameworks. The chosen frameworks are analytical tools accepted for all social sciences. The methods indicate the direction of the knowledge management research. The validity and reliability of this direction are secured in the variety of frameworks and by that an evaluation of each paper from five scientific perspectives. The analyses based upon an emphasis upon the knowledge, the problem or instruments indicate that most papers concentrate upon existing knowledge and accepted methodologies and less related to new problems. The results indicate a conference based upon as-is-knowledge and existing methodology and less upon new problems like sustainable businesses, regions, and societies. Most papers are concerned with what we already know and how to improve the existing situation. The papers are less concerned with what we do not know and the intuitive what we do not know that we know. There is by that little progress or accumulation of new knowledge. The researchers do not agree on a school of knowledge management or familiar paradigms or common perspectives. The theoretical foundation has a high degree of similarity across the papers. The construction of data or stories asking what is adequate or inadequate for a good business story or the criticism of research as acceptable versus nonacceptable is not dominating. Most papers analyze definitive concepts verifying existing research as valid and are to a smaller degree falsifying existing research as invalid. We classified most papers to be within an empirical paradigm, fewer papers within a materialistic paradigm and a clarified subjectivity paradigm. Most papers define themselves as objective and in harmony with existing results while some papers are in harmony with the existing results using subjective methods. We classified a few papers within a clarified subjectivity or an action paradigm. The research concepts are accordingly definitive and deductive explaining existing worldviews while much fewer are using sensitizing inductive concepts exploring and exploiting worldviews. The practical implication is to get more engaged research. To move ahead for better quality in the research it is necessary to break free from the tremendous empirical paradigm and the materialistic paradigm and move into the clarified subjectivity and action paradigm. Paradigmatic ecumenism will tend to a fiercer, but an idea-generating debate. This pluralistic approach might give more engaged research representing more sustainable societies and businesses. Paper applies an in-depth example to knowledge-development decisions made at the top levels of firms and their consistency with specific training initiatives arranged with third party educational providers. The unique access provided by the network in Poland at the core of this study yields insights at both levels, an opportunity not often available to academic researchers. Case study is employed. The cooperative training network includes multiple firms (five included here), thirty-eight vocational schools, and a technical university overseeing the program. Data collection including preparatory communication, periodic surveys, and additional in-depth interviews with companies as well as data provided by participating schools though only the quantitative survey results are included in this paper. Both firms and schools, as a proxy for participants, are pleased with training initiatives. Moreover, specific results on training initiatives varying by degree of company control and location (in-house, on-campus) provide insights on how firms can gain more control over the nature of the training (firm-specific knowledge) while still maintaining participant interest (often based on obtaining more industry-specific or occupational knowledge). The research is a case study and so not statistically extendable. The case study also takes place in Poland and describes a unique cooperative network including for-profit firms, vocational secondary schools, and a university. Results should be interpreted with some care, but at the same time provide unique depth and insight. Results provide useful guidance for firms participating in training partnerships as well as for schools joining in such partnerships. Specific feedback on the perception and acceptance of specific initiatives (e.g. internships) has been obtained. Brings together several streams of literature often not discussed in one place. This paper reviews the management and organization studies literature underpinning the construct of knowledge loss. It proposes that five clusters of knowledge loss influence the capacity of organizations to retain their valuable organizational knowledge. Such clusters include hanging, fading, disengaging, dissolving, and vanishing. To overcome the disruptive consequences of knowledge loss, this paper proposes five potential organizational interventions including reminding, refreshing, re-acquiring, re-building, and re-inventing. In contexts of higher learning, students must be supported effectively in developing their knowledge, skills, and competencies. Thus, faculty members (incl. lecturers and administrators) are faced with the management task to organize and align innovative teaching and learning formats. As we know from research, the use of knowledge visualization is both a facilitating tool for cognitive processing and learning itself, and for strategic decision-making processes within organizations. However, the literature on the types of (IT-enabled) knowledge visualization for learning in higher education contexts is highly fragmented and dispersed and includes different branches for researchers and practitioners. This makes it difficult to achieve an overview and find systematic and consistent visual approaches along students' learning paths. By highlighting the role of knowledge visualization to support organizing innovative teaching and learning, we provide a systematic, structured overview of such approaches. The goal of this paper is thus to structure the field of knowledge visualization for lifelong and university-based learning based on seminal papers. For this purpose, we present a segmentation approach with six areas to analyse the role of knowledge visualization for learning in higher education contexts, namely: Visualizing Learning Offers (e.g., Curriculum Visualization Tools), Visual Learning Environments (e.g., Metaverse), Learning Content Visualization (e.g., Visual Variation Patterns), Visual Techniques for Learning (e.g., Concept Mapping), Visual Learning Analytics (e.g., Learner Dashboards), and Visualizing Learning Outcomes (e.g., Digital Course Badges). Based on systemizing key concepts, our paper concludes with promising future research avenues for each of the six areas, as well as for the domain of knowledge visualization for higher learning itself. We conclude with specific ideas how the area of visualizing learning offers can act as a spearhead for empirical research (and practice transfer) in the knowledge visualization domain. The purpose of this paper is to present the result of a Systematic Literature Review SLR of models, methodologies, guidelines, analysis, strategies, practices and frameworks related to the implementation of Knowledge Codification Process. The study was conducted following the SLR approach, taking into account only scientific documents published between 2004 and 2013. The revision consisted of four phases: search process, inclusion and exclusion filter, quality assessment, and data extraction, each of which was intended to select the most suitable information to help answer the research questions; case studies were mainly considered for future applications in organizations. The results of each document were identified as well as its activities, roles, tools, variables and indicators. The findings did not explicitly show documents where the implementation of Knowledge Codification Process was specified. As a result, based on the revision of the literature, the different components were taken from alternative processes. The results show first general aspects, presenting the number of documents per industry, per outcome and per research method used, followed by the list of activities, roles, tools, variables and indicators organized by the number of documents and by the type of outcome found in the revision. The result of the SLR can be a starting point to create an implementation model of Knowledge Codification Process, as well as give the readers an overview of the state of Knowledge Codification Process and promote Knowledge Management community in future investigations. In this paper we analyse the literature regarding Critical Knowledge Management (CKM). We define CKM as a branch of the Knowledge Management science that deals with marginal and controversial social matters like race, gender, sexism, LGBT and so on. Critical KM is therefore a "twin sister" of Critical Human Resource Development (CHRD) in the bigger field of the analysis of Intangibles. We perform a Literature Review based on the Systematic Literature procedures and using the B-On Database. We conclude that the analysis of issues related to Critical KM is still very scarce and very recent. It seems that being KM a relative new science, social issues have been slow to be addressed; furthermore, KM science has been too much linked with companies and even corporations and with productivity and efficiency. All this creates a bias in the field and makes that, for now Critical KM has been virtually inexistent. The capturing and the sharing of people's experiences, reflections, and learning can create value within any firm where knowledge is a regarded as a primary asset. Intraorganizational benefits of conversations captured via podcast-style recording and sharing have the potential to be a major facet of the modern art of knowledge management. Knowledge capture and sharing between members of an organization therefore may be able to create new capabilities for engagement that lead to useful knowledge resources. This paper will explore whether a designed conversation captured and shared through the podcast format and distribution method is more than just storytelling or experience sharing. It will then go on to assert that a designed method of creating this contextual knowledge artifact that is aligned to the organizational values and direction can contribute to an ingrained knowledge sharing disposition (i.e., a fundamental cultural shift). This designed conversation approach proves a dependable and scalable method to the elucidation of know how. Consider this structure being a tin-opener. It is a tool designed to open and get inside to the "canned" tacit knowledge. The resulting conversation could be knowledge of high value to the firm that is released from the minds of personnel. The development of intellectual capital theory has been guided by the ideas and thoughts of a handful of influential practitioners, including Sveiby (1997), Kaplan (Kaplan and Norton, 1992), and Edvinsson (Edvinson and Malone, 1997). These pioneers established the basis of the "intellectual capital standard theory". More recently, other authors have advanced some contributions integrating an ecosystem approach in line with sustainability concerns. The present paper discusses the assumptions and principles that support the standard theory (the prevailing paradigm). The paper then introduces other models and methodologies as alternatives to the standard theory--such as the "Value Explorer" (Andriessen and Tissen, 2000) and the "Intellectual Capital Benchmarking System (ICBS)" (Viedma and Cabrita, 2012)--and examines the foundations and principles on which the alternative new theory (the 'new paradigm') is based. This paper aims to explore the effect of intellectual capital and strategic partnerships on the performance and competitiveness of construction companies. The study employs a qualitative research design and uses a literature review approach to analyse existing research and identify key concepts and themes. The findings suggest that intellectual capital and strategic partnerships can significantly improve construction companies' innovation, efficiency, and competitiveness. However, effective management and utilization of these assets require a clear understanding of the company's goals, resources, and capabilities, as well as the development of a collaborative and knowledge-sharing culture. The breakout of the COVID-19 pandemic has intensified the appearance of many additional technical knowledge risks in organizations. Cyber risks in particular are becoming a great challenge for organizations. At the same time, academic research on cyber risks, their costs, consequences and ability of overcoming them is still scarce and fragmented. In order to fill this gap, the paper is aimed to identify different types of cyber risks that organizations face and to examine the organizations' ability to handle those risks. The paper presents research results from a sample of 60 organizations, addressing questions such as: (i) What are the costs of cyber risks the organization has faced? (ii) What is the company ability to address these risks?, and (iii) What is the organization doing to minimize the impact of such risks? Data was collected by means of a questionnaire. This research study has allowed to identify the state of the art concerning cyber risks, which can bear severe consequences for organizations. The findings clearly show that not all organizations suffer from the same level of cyber risks but it is much related to their field of operations. Consequently, also the ability to manage these cyber risks is quite diversified among the examined companies. Research results are limited to a sample of 60 organizations and thus the findings should be taken with caution. The study provides useful insights for managers and owners of organizations in need of dealing with the cyber threats/attacks and other technical knowledge risks threatening their organizations. The paper is enriched with a number of sample solutions that they may apply to mitigate those risks. Purpose: Knowledge risks are increasingly becoming a great challenge to a variety of organizations. At the same time, academic research on such types of risks, their consequences, and potential ways of overcoming them is still scarce and fragmented. To fill this gap, the paper aims to find out do companies manage their knowledge risks, what are the possible knowledge risks they face and have they observed an increase of knowledge risks during the COVID-19 pandemic. The paper is aimed to present insights on different types of knowledge risks that organizations face, and the ways organizations handle them. The paper also proposes some potential countermeasures organizations might use to mitigate the consequences of knowledge risks. Methodology: The study presents the results of a quantitative survey performed among 60 professionals dealing with management and knowledge risks in organizations. In the study, the authors also have examined what tools and methods are used to manage these risks. The study also explores the level of readiness organizations have to address potential knowledge risks. Findings: The theoretical study has allowed us to identify a variety of knowledge risks, which can bear severe consequences for organizations, such as knowledge loss, knowledge leaking, knowledge hiding, or risks related to cybercrime. All these risks may potentially reduce the productivity in organizations, thus leading to the degradation of organizational performance. Research limitations: Research results are limited to the convenience sample that was selected for the study and thus may not give a comprehensive overview of the state of the art. Organizations that operate under uncertainty need to cultivate their ability to manage their primary resource, knowledge, accordingly. Under such conditions, organizations are required to harvest knowledge from two sources: to explore knowledge that is to be found outside the organization as well as exploit knowledge that is contained within. In a knowledge management context these exploitation and exploration activities have been conceptualized as knowledge ambidexterity. While ambidexterity has been studied extensively in contexts as manufacturing or IT, the notion of knowledge ambidexterity remains scarce in current knowledge management research. This study illustrates knowledge ambidexterity and elaborates its positive impact on organizational performance. Our study furthermore answers the question of how the use of enterprise social media (ESM) can facilitate the performance effects of knowledge ambidexterity. Drawing on the theory of communication visibility, we argue that ESM (e.g., Microsoft Teams, Slack, etc.) allow employees to communicate unhindered while making these communications visible. This allows for capturing tacit knowledge within these communications - this form of knowledge is generally hard to codify and can be a source of competitive edge. With respect to knowledge ambidexterity, ESM use can capture tacit knowledge aspects originating from inside and outside the organization, which fosters the development of a competitive advantage and, thus, supports its positive effect on organizational performance. This paper contributes to IT-enabled ambidexterity research in two aspects: (1) It sheds light on knowledge ambidexterity and, thereby, addresses a major practical challenge for knowledge-intensive organizations, and (2) it elaborates on the effects that ESM use can have on the relationship between knowledge ambidexterity and organizational performance. Purpose: COVID-19 has caused an unprecedented crisis affecting the entire tourism industry. Accommodation, food, and travel sectors have been affected by the decreased number of visitors, which had a ripple effect on the financial situation of the whole industry. The purpose of this work is a better understanding of the role of knowledge management in terms of mitigating the crisis in the tourism sector, as well as a development of the framework that appropriately addresses the relevance of KM in crisis situations. Methodology: This study is based on the literature review of selected papers devoted to crisis management and knowledge management in the time of crisis. The research output is presented in the form of a new framework. This study focuses on the potential support of KM practices on the crisis management within a tourism industry. This work delivers the insights regarding the potential knowledge management application in tourism sector in terms of coping with high-volume crisis. Findings: The proposed framework shows that knowledge management practices can be potentially helpful in the time of crisis and may be integrated into a kind of framework for crisis management. Those practices need to be carefully adjusted to the particular situation and to the possibilities of their implementation, as well as to the type of crisis situation and its severity. Additionally, the importance of knowledge as a mean of support for tourism organizations in their decision-making process has been confirmed. Research limitations: Research output is limited to the theoretical contribution originating from the framework. This limitation is to be overcome in the future when the pilot study testing this framework is conducted. Practical implications: Findings of this study provides useful insights not only for the academic society and researchers, but also for tourism organizations striving for further development and improvement of its' internal processes and handling a crisis situation. Organizational agility may be an antidote against threats from volatile, uncertain, complex, or ambiguous corporate environments. While agility has been extensively examined in manufacturing enterprises, comparably less is known about agility in knowledge-intensive organizations. As results may not be transferable, there is still some confusion about how agility in knowledge-intensive organizations can be characterized, what factors facilitate its development, what its organizational effects are, and what environmental conditions favor these effects. This study closes these gaps by presenting a systematic literature review on agility in knowledge-intensive organizations. A systematic literature search led to a sample of 37 relevant papers for our review. Integrating the knowledge-based view and a dynamic capabilities perspective, we (1) present different relevant conceptualizations of organizational agility, (2) discuss relevant knowledge management-related as well as information technology-related capabilities that support the development of organizational agility, and (3) shed light on the moderating role of environmental conditions in enhancing organizational agility and its effect on organizational performance. This academic paper adds value to theory by synthesizing existing research on agility in knowledge-intensive organizations. It furthermore may serve as a map for closing research gaps by proposing an extensive agenda for future research. Our study expands existing literature reviews on agility with its specific focus on a knowledge-intensive context and its integration of the research streams of knowledge management capabilities as well as information technology capabilities. It integrates relevant organizational knowledge management practices and the use of knowledge management systems to ensure superior performance effects. Our study can serve as a base for future examinations of organizational agility by illustrating fruitful topics for further examination as well as open questions. The paper presents some aspects of knowledge management theory. This underpins a research methodology designed to expose knowledge transfer in voluntary not-for-profit groups. The paper aims are to make recommendations which, supported by a knowledge management strategy and good practices, provide the basis for the development of a future model of knowledge management in crisis situations. A hypothesis has been established: During emergencies that arise suddenly, a variety of information and knowledge is dispersed, widely disseminated, and belongs to many different organizations. A coherent information system is needed for the dissemination and sharing of knowledge for effective assistance to people affected by the crisis. The main challenge in managing knowledge in such humanitarian emergencies, is the fact that a wide variety of information and knowledge is dispersed, disseminated, and originally belongs to many different organizations. These information resources may not be organized and used effectively during a crisis situation. Over time, preliminary and non-standardized rules are developed. The authors of this paper took part in a humanitarian action - both independently and in cooperation with non-governmental organizations. This allowed for the collection of extensive research material. During the research, the methodology of participatory observation and surveys was used. The aim of the study was to develop knowledge management standards, for use in the event of other humanitarian crises. The final research technique used is given, from participant selection to outcome analysis. It was found that processes of organizational learning and active knowledge management occurred in many forms. Knowledge was transferred in and out of the organizations. Expertise from earlier experiences was applied, and transferred, becoming explicit. Managerial skills and methods were applied in new organizational contexts. Many similarities and some differences were found, despite clear differences in the type of organisations and country of origin. The research allowed the authors to research extensively into people's motivations, priorities, and forms of information transfer. Knowledge acquisition, transfer and sharing were clearly identifiable, as was organizational learning and subsequent usage of it. Future implementation of standardized, coherent knowledge management rules, used in crisis situations will facilitate the sharing of knowledge and its reuse. One of the most popular sites to observe collaborative content creation on the Internet is Wikipedia. A significant part of the publication devoted to this encyclopaedia focuses on special forms of collaboration, such as WikiProjects, which allow to effective work sharing. The aim of the paper was to identify power users working in public spaces of Wikipedia, especially in WikiProjects, and to determine their importance for this form of cooperation in knowledge sharing. The research question was: what is the meaning of the Power Users in Wikipedia? The methods used in the paper were content analysis of activity logs of Wikipedians and participatory observation. The author presents the results of his own research on the total number of WikiProject users in the two language versions of Wikipedia: Polish and Korean. The research presented the existence of power users in the Polish and Korean versions. There was a moderately strong relationship between the length of time one remained active on Wikipedia and the time of joining as a Wikipedian, and a weak relationship between seniority and the number of WikiProjects in which the user was active. In turn, participatory observation identified the roles of power users, mainly as initiators of action in Wikipedia. The presented research results could be used mostly for coordinators of online communities, but also for the initiators of the new undertakings in cyberspace. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The notion of 'smart cities' has gained the attention of policymakers, urban developers and government authorities around the world and is emerging as a major response to urbanization, economic regeneration and other environmental challenges faced by cities globally. Smart cities depend not only on a city's endowment of hard infrastructure (physical capital), but also and increasingly so, on the availability and quality of knowledge communication and social infrastructure (human and social capital). This emerging role of cities as information hubs and knowledge repositories is particularly decisive for urban competitiveness. Arguably, many smart city projects die after the pilot stage and the lessons learned from previous projects never scale up to inform subsequent implementations. This is a major impediment in the future development of smart cities, particularly around facilitating successful technological and procedural replication. In line with recent calls for a cautious rethink of the very rationale and relevance of the smart cities debate pointing to new avenues of research into interdisciplinary aspects, this paper reviews the extant smart city literature in an attempt to identify current theoretical streams and provide further insight into the role of Knowledge Management in smart city development. It also explores how cities can realise the full benefits of tacit knowledge, learning and collaboration. A review of forty-eight peer-reviewed articles is conducted. The findings suggest the lack of Knowledge Management models for smart city replication and reveal how socio-technical approaches can help to support collaboration and knowledge sharing. Although the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) express urgency for actions, the UN also reports that reaching these goals as planned is very challenging. It has been argued that a mindset paradigm shift is needed and this paper will show that knowledge management (KM) can play an important part in this shift. Knowledge of sustainability is often complex, systemic and hard to capture (tacit), leading to specific challenges in its management. To address these, a three-step process, DCA, had been proposed beginning with defining (D) what knowledge is needed, then collecting (C) and acting (A) upon it. Focusing specifically on the defining step (D) and on tacit knowledge as the most challenging aspects, the paper proposes two improvements: first, to integrate Nonaka et al's SECI model (Socialize, Externalize, Combine, Internalize) that describes how tacit knowledge can be externalized and shared. Secondly, the Sustainability Mindset by Rimanoczy is proposed as framework that aligns values and allows discovery and formulation of tacit sustainability knowledge along its content areas and principles. It is posited that when tacit understanding becomes more tangible, shifts in mindset can occur more readily, and vice versa, that a broadened mindset eases sense-making of tacit knowledge, thus creating a cycle of growth and change for the organization. The Sustainability Mindset Indicator (SMI), a personal development tool is proposed to operationalize the development of the sustainability mindset, and said exploration of tacit knowledge, which combined with tools from the SECI model may offer managers concrete tools to define the knowledge their organizations need on their pathway to change towards sustainability and fulfillment of SDGs. The primary purpose of this article is to present the functional information and knowledge - acquired from smart electricity meter readings, which are a component of the Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI). The relations between the management of knowledge acquired from the AMI system and the new empirically identifieddecision-making processes that make the management of electricity value more efficient, both on the side of the supplier but also, which need to be emphasised, on the side of the consumer/household, often the energy prosumer (micro RES production), are indicated in it. In the first part of the article - the theoretical and cognitive part - justification has been given for the subject matter specified in the title of the paper. Attention was drawn to the dynamic digitization and automation of energy metering readings. The size of the AMI market in terms of the growth in the number of smart meters in households, as well as the size of the market, has been quantitatively described. In the context of the dynamic growth of smart electricity meters, the growth of heterogeneous knowledge on households resulting from high-frequency readings was justified, which in fact reflect not only variable energy demand but also the culture of energy demand and use. In the paper its author has structured the insights gained from the AMI infrastructure. In turn, the second - empirical - part attempts to answer two research questions: 1) What information/knowledge in addition to real-time bi-directional energy readings necessary for energy value management can be generated through the use of high-frequency clocking smart meters?; 2) How to use the acquired knowledge, manage the knowledge, acquired from the readings of the distributed AMI (smart electricity meters) infrastructure, in terms of key decision-making processes that make energy value management more effective, both on the supplier side but also on the consumer/household side, frequently the energy prosumer - micro RES production. In order to answer the above two research questions, a questionnaire survey was conducted and a brainstorming, scientific discourse with inference was carried out with a group of business practitioners, including managers of corporations and energy companies - improving their knowledge, and competences in the area of management and entrepreneurship in energy markets, including RES. Within the general context of new ideas generation, there is a grey area that still concerns the organizational design solutions related to creativity. In fact, if personal characteristics and other community-related issues have been quite explored so far, some organizational mechanisms still need to be deepened. In this paper we aim to investigate the impact of professional networks on Innovative Work Behaviour in the local government to achieve public value. We investigate the contribute of creativity in the digitalization of Italian public administration considering the contribution of public employees on developing knowledge management. Moreover, we investigate a community of 190 employees of municipalities divided into three macro categories: deputy employees, Managers and Senior Managers. An OSL regression model has been used to understand to what extent the degree of collaboration and advice among employees and their propensity to adopt digitalization in ordinary practice considering social capital variables. What emerges from the OLS regression is that despite accelerating the ordinary work using the leverage of digitalization and knowledge management, there is the custom of not applying the enormous benefit of process re-engineering and continuing their work attitude in what the economic literature defines "the comfort zone". The results consolidate the current literature about the creation of public value showing the resilience of public employees to change their state of mind reflecting any kind of innovation. Studies indicate that Knowledge Management (KM) contributes to the effectiveness and efficiency of organisations leading to improved performance. Heath sector NGOs in Kenya make a significant contribution to health care delivery. Besides complementing government efforts in healthcare provision, health sector NGOs act as a watchdog, monitoring the implementation of health policies and commitments, and also advocate for the rights of marginalised groups, hence positively contributing to efforts geared towards the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) on health, as well as other national development priorities, such as Kenya's vision 2030. The purpose of this paper is to highlight the status of Health sector NGOs in Kenya through a contextual analysis of the sector based on a literature review. Though KM creates new value for organisations through the activation and use of explicit and tacit organisational knowledge, limited empirical studies have been undertaken to illustrate the application of KM in health sector NGOs in Kenya to gain these benefits. A tremendous amount of knowledge is created within the healthcare system that is of utmost importance in improving the quality of healthcare, but without empirical evidence to illustrate its usefulness. This paper brings out the key KM issues, challenges and opportunities for health sector NGOs in Kenya that would contribute to their performance. This paper used current business theory to underpin an original research methodology modified by the authors, to expose knowledge, its acquisition, management and transfer, in voluntary not-for-profit groups operating with widely differing technical purposes. The aim was to show how the methodology identified common processes underlying knowledge management, and how it was acquired, managed and transferred, in disparate organisations. The methodology first used Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA henceforth) techniques. It was used to structure and analyse the responses after full transcription, then complemented by other analysis techniques. Transcripts were made from new interviews with disparate individuals from groups in Poland were compared with earlier published results. The underpinning acquisition process is addressed in depth. The research question is: Are there common factors about motivational and knowledge transfer processes, in disparate groups? To identify these factors, meaning units were identified and noted, and analysis of these created emergent themes, which were then addressed using other, literature derived tools. The authors also propose to use this process for new avenues of research. Finding a methodology and answering this research question has proved a challenge, and this paper describes a methodological solution. The full research technique is presented, from participant selection to outcome analysis. The results demonstrated thatsimilar processes of organisational learning and active knowledge management occurred in all the groups. Knowledge was transferred in and out of the organisations. Expertise from earlier experiences was applied by the groups, and transferred, becoming explicit. Existing managerial skills and methods were applied in new organisational contexts. Many similarities were found, despite clear differences in technical purpose and types of organisations. Utilisation of this technique made outcomes clearly visible. Thus, this process, although very time consuming and inevitably subjective, has allowed the authors to research extensively people's motivations, priorities and beliefs. COVID-19 has caused the most serious economic and health crisis globally that we have witnessed in decades. Millions of people across the world have lost jobs, while the healthcare systems are struggling to cope with the rapid increase in cases. Many sectors have been affected with this pandemic including the construction infrastructure sector which benefits from engineers and different staff members travelling to site and interacting/collaborating with peers. Infrastructure construction organisations have responded well during the pandemic in order to carry on works while minimising risks to their employees and their families, however management styles have had to be updated and the transferring/ storage and collection of knowledge has seen new processes and methods being adopted. The relationship between Knowledge and its management within the infrastructure sector during the COVID-19 Pandemic is a topic that has not been regularly researched. This paper aims to review both the impact that COVID-19 has had within the infrastructure sector and Knowledge Management during these times attempting to gain an output of how knowledge has been managed throughout the pandemic within the sector. Methodology: Given the lack of research on this topic, this study adopted and implemented a case study methodology approach. Ten semi-structured interviews were conducted as well as observations with the organisations that took part on the research. A total of five organisations took part on this research and the patterns and connections were analysed during the data analysis stage to draw a conclusion from the study. Findings: COVID-19 has turned our worlds upside down with everything coming to a halt and everyone's lives changing constantly. All sectors have had to change and adapt to this new way of life which also means working management styles are to accommodate for these new ways of working. Innovative technologies are at a rise and construction companies are aware of these advancements. However, the industry has been one of the slowest industries in adopting these advances in relation to Knowledge Management. Knowledge is a big influencer within the infrastructure sector, there is a lot of resistance in terms of adopting innovative techniques to boost KM practices positively as most companies are not fully aware of beneficial adoption practices and tend to overlook the potential benefits and instead investigate the challenges it may raise during adoption. During these difficult times, organisations within the infrastructure sector have had to become a lot more digital. Data storage environments are being heavily used as people are not travelling to work offices which gave employees the ability to use resources and data from the office itself whether it be through face-to-face communication or paper drawings and information. Some companies though have implemented some form of innovative KM processes, one which was highlighted as a trend was Big Data. The industry should enhance their awareness of these technological advances and explore more processes that could benefit the industry to explore the benefits that they can gain. Knowledge management in enterprises may be considered on many levels. The most common ones are knowledge creation (innovation), knowledge sharing, knowledge distribution and knowledge protection. However, there is one area of management where the importance of knowledge management is underestimated, namely, that of organizational conflict. The aim of this paper is to show how knowledge management can affect the efficiency of reaching an agreement, while resolving an organizational conflict and to what extent inappropriate knowledge distribution in an organization can play a conflict-generating role. The research conducted is of a qualitative nature. Case studies of mediations conducted within the framework of Collective Disputes Resolution in Poland will be presented in the paper. The subject of the analysis will be production and service companies, as well as organizations from the public sector. The author will prove the proposition that democratic access to information in an organization has a positive impact on the effectiveness of resolving organizational conflicts. Even if conflict resolution is not possible at a given moment, the democratic distribution of knowledge enables the effective management of the process of an organizational conflict. Undoubtedly, modern information technology has an increasing impact on the activities of healthcare entities, which is attributable to the relationship between information technology (IT) and medical technologies and the use of IT in the management of these entities. The aim of this paper is to examine the relationship between hospital performance and a strategic approach to managing Information Technology and intangible assetsin Polish hospitals. Based on previous studies, the proposed model considers two different phenomena which affect the performance of Polish hospitals. These are the level of knowledge management of hospital employees and the level of managing intangible assets which are not directly related to the staff's knowledge and competencies. In the proposed research model, the constructs corresponding to the management of knowledge and other intangible assets play a mediating role between the strategic approach to IT management and the performance of Polish hospitals. The estimation of the model parameters and the assessment of their correctness was performed using the partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) methodology. The model parameters were statistically significant. The hypotheses proposed in the paper which form the structural model have been positively verified, and the model meets the required quality criteria. A strategic approach to IT management indirectly influences the efficiency of hospital operations through the appropriate management of staff knowledge and other intangible assets. The paper aims to present preliminary data from a systematic literature review. With this paper/communication we intend to explore a way to identify and evidence the main scientific papers, around the Knowledge management's (KM) (in)dependence on Human resource management (HRM), published during the last decade -- 2009-2019, and deepen the conceptual and theoretical foundations of this inter-relation. Following the guidelines for systematic literature review, for management and social sciences, the authors searched, selected and analysed top cited scientific papers, published in peerreviewed journals, indexed in the SCOPUSTM database. The United Nations (UN) 2030 agenda for sustainable development outlines seventeen concrete goals that encourage organizations and individuals to actively participate in rendering global societal activities more sustainable (United Nations, 2015). Organizations that aspire to be responsible global citizens need to be economically viable, and socially and environmentally responsible in their actions and provisions of goods and services. To accomplish these goals, they need to learn what sustainability means and how to institutionalize its principles. This paper proposes a three-step process for sustainability knowledge learning: 1) Learning what to know: determining which knowledge is needed; 2) Learning how to learn this knowledge: developing strategies to identify sources for the needed sustainability knowledge (external); 3) Learning the knowledge and applying it: developing knowledge management practices that enable absorption and dissemination of requisite knowledge throughout the organization (internal). Based on an exploratory literature review, it can be concluded that several comprehensive models for sustainability knowledge management exist that emphasize internal processes (step 3). Fewer examples are found that consider the second external step of where and how to obtain the needed knowledge, and only one source was found that addresses the fact that before learning of sustainability, one needs to understand what needs to be learned (step 1). It may be the systemic character of sustainability knowledge - which is not yet fully recognized in the literature - that is at the heart of the challenges encountered in developing a comprehensive knowledge management strategy. This paper also finds that a clear definition of sustainability knowledge does not yet exist. Various terms are used, and often only the environmental aspect is studied. In conclusion, this paper is a call for more research to establish a clearer view of what sustainability knowledge is, and based on that, a more detailed development of effective knowledge management strategies. Structuring, distributing, and managing knowledge (KM) can be especially challenging in Small and Midsized Enterprises (SMEs) with limited manpower and technology resources. When maintaining updated, relevant, and actionable knowledge on risk management (RM) in a company, it is critical to enact proper KM design and approaches fitting the limited capabilities of the SME. This paper presents and analyses a conceptual approach for SMEs to work with RM in a simple workshop setting that helps employees and management to identify, track, and respond to risks dynamically. The design of this research is based on creation of a risk matrix and a risk action board with six variants of parameters set from ISO 31000 and Failure Mode Effect Analysis (FMEA). The boards are physical in A0 size and highly coloured. The boards are developed from a pre-screening and requirement elicitation process in six different companies in three different industries with observations and selected interviews as the basic methods of data collection. This paper's originality lies in the conveyance of a highly visible and dynamic visualization of current knowledge that addresses the full organization on a daily basis. The introduction of RM as a cornerstone in the fundamental shop floor KM processes of daily communication is proving a valuable tool in both KM, RM, and employee engagement. The main research implication of this paper is that it provides a better and more detailed understanding of the otherwise abstract RM concepts and their application on the shop floor level. Knowledge is a key resource for an organization, serving as a source of sustainable differentiation and thus a competitive advantage. Knowledge-based resources are especially valuable to organizations because they are unique and protected against imitation. The advantages of knowledge-based resources mean that investments in these resources translate into benefits for the enterprise, especially when knowledge becomes an attribute of the company as a whole. The ability to embed knowledge in an organization depends on many factors, including those that directly shape the company's organizational culture. One of such factors may be entrepreneurial orientation as a strategic attitude of the firm presented in a given environment. The construct of entrepreneurial orientation should be treated as a multidimensional construct, where the dimensions are: autonomy, proactivity, competitive aggressiveness, innovation and risk taking. Research on the influence of organizational entrepreneurship on building the organization's knowledge resources is relatively rarely presented in the literature, which underlines the scientific contribution of the paper. The main aim of the paper is to study the impact of the level of entrepreneurial orientation on the level of knowledge-based resources embedded in the organization. The implementation of the goal was based on questionnaire surveys conducted in 2022. on the group of 355 enterprises in Poland. The respondents' opinions were diagnosed using a 5-point Likert scale. A managerial approach was used in the study, which constitutes a certain limitation of the research. The results of empirical studies were statistically analysed using tools such as factor analysis and multiple regression. The main research conclusions indicate a positive correlation, of moderate intensity, between the dimensions of entrepreneurial orientation and the level of knowledge-based resources, where the greatest impact was noted in the case of the following predictors: innovation and competitive aggressiveness. The research has implications for management practitioners who, by promoting entrepreneurial attitudes at the organizational level, can manipulate knowledge resources, especially in the area of HR. The paper presents a case study of domain ontology implementation process in one of the largest banks in Slovakia. The aim of the study is to provide an overview of the process of implementing a core knowledge management practice within a geopolitical area where knowledge management is quite subdued as a management practice. The paper thus focuses on describing the bank’s background, the chosen methodology, the current status and ongoing challenges regarding the implementation of the domain ontology. The ontology in the bank is a part of its knowledge management initiative which grew as an extension of data governance and metadata management. The ontology was created by the bank's metadata analysts as a by-product of business glossary rework. The ontology aims to provide structure to the glossary to enable administration and support consistency within the business glossary as well as standardization of business terms in the bank. The paper examines the chosen methodology and provides examples of the most crucial use cases that the ontology fulfills. The paper acknowledges the design and implementation errors, explains the most crucial challenges stemming from the methodology as well as the bank’s cultural attitude towards term standardization and structuring the available knowledge. The paper concludes that the ontology is still in its early phases and there is much work still yet to be done, especially regarding its promotion and future utilization. The team’s activities were up to now focused mainly on methodological improvements, and while there are still several methodological challenges yet to be addressed, distribution of the methodology poses the most crucial challenge for the future. Although creativity has broadly been recognised an essential ingredient of KM for long-term organisational success, evidence suggests that much remains undiscovered in the current state of KM research due to lack of empirical information. For instance, it is unclear whether and how knowledge management can maximise the individual creative potential for growth and development and contribute to organisational knowledge share, effectiveness and development. The scant research to date highlights that certain HRD interventions can evoke an opportunity of personal (and organisational) growth, due to developing and unleashing untapped human expertise but there is a lack of empirical work in this area. The purpose of this paper is to rationalise the current complex and conceptual approaches to creativity and propose a simplified model that considers the developmental aspects of creativity. The scope of this paper lies within strategic role of human resource development (HRD) as a function of Knowledge Management (KM) and facilitator of creative behaviour amongst employees. In this paper, a systematic literature review guides the development of a model of creativity, grounded on the insights provided by system models of creativity. Person-context interactions and human resource development are the focus of the approach. The proposed model illustrates that HRD is well placed to encourage individual creativity through simultaneous influence on creativity-relevant processes and mechanisms at both individual and organisational levels. Specifically, it promotes individual awareness of each person’s individual creativity by engaging employees in creative tasks and building on the inborn creative potential. Furthermore, it endorses the person-context relationship by developing a sense of a creativity favourable organisational climate and promoting individual commitment to creative, knowledge-based tasks. The contributions of this piece of work are twofold. First, it contributes to the creativity, HRD and KM literature by conceptualising creativity within KM research and outlines an agenda for future research. How to measure knowledge has attracted the interest of scholars since more than two decades. Many techniques have been proposed but they are still far from becoming an established practice. They are very heterogeneous, are based on different foundations, and often derive from techniques formerly developed for other goals. A rationale to treat the problem still lacks, which is critical for both practice and research. The paper attempts to give some order to a critical issue in the KM and IC literature, where the theoretical and methodological soundness of the various measurement techniques is still debated. By examining the extant literature, it aims to illustrate the state-of-the-art of knowledge measurement and the related issues in KM research and practice. It proposes a classification of popular methods, and discusses their differences, point of strength and weakness. Also, it analyzes their soundness from the point of view of a theory of measurement. Knowledge management is the concept that can turn the tide in the context of market competitiveness and competitive advantage in any area of organised activity. The benefit knowledge management may bring to an organisation is not tied to human organisations only though, as artificial agents, initially created as an imitation of humans, can benefit from organised and accessible useful knowledge as well. This paper covers a number of conceptual modelling examples following the theoretical settings presented within the paper. These examples emphasise the importance for clear and nonbiased definition of knowledge management concepts and contents, with the goal of fostering knowledge sharing culture in organisations, as well as creating knowledge accessible to artificial agents and applicable to various situations where artificial intelligence can be of service utilising the concept of systems comprising agents both human and artificial. Therefore the main quest of this paper is to argue towards demonstrating the benefits of conceptual modelling in knowledge management using domain specific and general cases, respecting the concept of fair argument, thus providing reasoning both in favour and against the basic topic of this paper. The main method of achieving the set goal is based on theoretical overview and analysis of the proposed cases and already published research. The results that are presented in this paper are a good addition to both the research areas of knowledge managements and multiagent systems. The combination is a welcome addition in the modern world where distributed computing is gaining power and informatisation is a global and omnipresent process. Emphasising the importance of developing systems that help bridge the communication between human and artificial agents, especially if they happen to be working in the same organisation, is an interesting problem with rising significance, since artificial agents are increasingly present in historically human organisations. This paper outlines ongoing research to standardize the metadata of letters from Finnish cultural heritage organizations to build a comprehensive archive for studying 19th-century epistolary culture in the Grand Duchy of Finland (1808/09-1917), as a part of the Constellations of Correspondence (CoCo) project. The challenge of deduplicating and reconciling actors and their associated information is an important problem faced in historical knowledge databases. The actors, e.g., senders and recipients of letters, can be individual people, couples, or families as well as organizations like institutions or companies. The deduplication described in this article has its focus on the individual people. Purpose: COVID-19 pandemic aftermaths include the emergence of new tendencies, such as the Quiet Quitting, and continuation of trends such as the Great Resignation, both of which have multiple knowledge-related impacts on individual, organizational and even national level. The aim of this paper is to show the mechanisms behind the Quiet Quitting and the Great Resignation from individual and organizational perspectives. Understanding them is the first step to developing remedies and building business resilience. Methodology: The paper uses systems thinking approach to analyse the phenomena of the Quiet Quitting. Causal loop diagrams are used to show the mechanisms behind those tendencies, their antecedents and the impact they have on several aspects of business operation and management. Findings: The Quiet Quitting and the Great Resignation are multifaceted phenomena and pose several knowledge-related dangers to organizations, including disturbed knowledge flows, knowledge loss, diminished efficiency, lost informal friendship networks, and knowledge leakage to competition. Causal loop diagram indicates that complicated relations between various elements may produce surprising and unexpected outcomes. It presents also opportunities to use leverage points in order to substantially reduce negative outcomes. Research limitations: The paper is of a conceptual nature. In order to transform causal loop diagrams into full systems thinking models extensive data is required. Hence this paper is intended as a basis for further research. Practical implications: The understanding of mechanisms behind the Great Resignation and the Quiet Quitting is crucial for managers trying to develop strategies that would tackle those problems. The papers shows what leverage points can be used to mitigate risks of their adverse impact on business organizations. Originality/value: The Great Resignation and the Quiet Quitting are often perceived as results of the COVID-19 pandemic, yet data suggest they remain strong also in the post-pandemic business reality. The purpose of this research was to study the set-up process of cultivating a knowledge sharing community in a financial institution comprising of 500 over employees. The areas that were researched were -- what major issues can be identified during the set-up phase, the critical success factors, and way-forward plans to sustain this program. This paper proposes in adopting an IS model in implementing a virtual knowledge sharing community. Conforming to a case study approach, the study investigates the outcomes of a 14-month on-going implementation program, encompassing of strategic discussions and multiple workshops in assessing critical knowledge assets and developing techniques in how best to manage explicit and tacit knowledge, amongst knowledge workers. The valuable insights were focused, in particular on KM training for the newly designated 'KM Stewards' who were responsible of driving the organisational KM strategic initiatives and the implementation of a KM capability assessment technique that can be adopted in a financial sector. Special emphasis was made in building the skills in intra-organisational cooperation and management engagement for meeting the challenge of 'capturing' and codifying tacit knowledge and ultimately the generation of lessons learned and fostering of virtual communities of practice in promoting a new form of 'collective intelligence' in the organisation. With practitioners' experience in adopting an IS model, this paper will highlight the implementation road map for assessing the usage of knowledge management systems, challenges faced by the KM Task Force, action plans and outcomes with the user community. Finally, this article will be able to contribute to the theoretical knowledge on knowledge sharing in the financial sector of domain. The last years have born witness to immense shifts in the workplace environment; the way people work, their work expectations and work engagement have been modified by both internal and external factors. Distant or hybrid work is no longer a novelty. With increasing remote work becoming a norm, the need for knowledge management (KM) is more evident than ever before. In an era of digitalisation, information technology, social networking and artificial intelligence (AI) software, where the active workforce and knowledge capital of an organization is comprised by four different generations (Baby Boomers, Generation X, Millennials and Generation Z) the organizational memory and intellectual capacity have to be readdressed. Sustaining a long-term, competitive advantage entails, after all, knowledge management efficacy. How KM processes (knowledge creation, sharing/transfer, acquisition, storage/retrieval and application) are administered and organised is important. For the above reasons, the aim of this paper is to rejuvenate the concept of KM by integrating adult learning theories in the organizational learning culture, and addressing the four different age cohorts of employees. Collection of information and assessment of strategies, tactics and practices is conducted via a systematic review of the literature. The main contribution of this paper involves the way in which adult learning principles can smooth transitions, enrich skills and capabilities, and encourage the development of a collaborative multigenerational knowledge pool that can facilitate overall management. Furthermore, practical and theoretical implications are discussed, limitations are communicated, and opportunities are located that can further enhance knowledge management in the future. Globally, the cybersecurity workforce changes tremendous challenges. Shortages in specialised cybersecurity staff members essentially puts organisations at risk. New graduates can face difficulties in entering the cybersecurity domain due to a lack of experience and knowledge. However, with the advent of newer techniques for knowledge development, we find that learning factories offer a fresh perspective. Learning factories provide a mechanism to remove the barriers in the field of cybersecurity and cultivate a nurturing training environment. This paper looks at the modernisation of traditional training by covering the application of learning factories in the cybersecurity field. It aims to show how knowledge can be geared into more practical schemes to empower participants and expose them to critical cybersecurity skills. Through the paper, it will be demonstrated that learning factories can be used for real-world learning and information sharing. Learning factories embody the principles of knowledge sharing and promotes more efficient knowledge management. With the use of nominated tools and technologies cyber security learning factories can help measure the effectiveness of worker training as well provide for consistent facilitated training. Overall, learning factories can help to transform training and build knowledge application. Learning factories may be set up to tackle real industry challenges and are particularly useful in the field of cybersecurity. Using learning factories there is an opportunity to advance multi-dimensional cybersecurity skills and develop innovation in the field. Due to the added advantages of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) being virtually accessible, there is the added benefits of agility, responsiveness and increased engagement. Using a variety of modes, cybersecurity learning factories can combine the techniques of gamification, videos, multi-media and simulation. Marginalised rural communities, particularly in tropical countries such as those within Southeast Asia, are often aware of the use of indigenous herbs and agricultural products but concomitantly oblivious as to the means of protection and promotion of using their traditional knowledge. It is estimated that around 1,500 plant species have been widely used for traditional medicines in Southeast Asia. The paper will commence with a discussion of the meaning of "traditional knowledge", adopting a utilitarian perspective. The paper focuses on the countries of Southeast Asia and provides a legal analysis of the protection of traditional knowledge provided under international treaties, namely: Agreement on Trade-related Aspects of International Property Rights (TRIPS); International Convention for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants (UPOV), International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGRFA); and the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). To date, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) has been unable to agree on the contents of an international legal instrument relating to intellectual property rights over genetic resources, traditional knowledge, and traditional culture. The legislative responses of the 11 nations of Southeast Asia are analysed. Much of the focus of international treaties is on protecting plant breeders' rights over farmers' rights, and this imbalance should be addressed. Governments should be proactive and amend their patent legislation to require patent applicants to declare their use of indigenous resources and knowledge.
