This special forum, derived from a featured session at the 2017 meeting of the American Association of Geographers (AAG) in Boston, seeks to carry out a grounded discussion of public intellectualism during the turbulent Trump era and beyond. Our hope is to demonstrate the capacity of geographers to participate in and contribute to debates beyond the academy, effect change within wider public worlds, and in turn be affected by this outreach. The contributions in this focus section are personal and intellectual reflections on public engagement, what it means for the contributing authors (and by extension what it might mean to the reader), as well as some guidance on practicing public engagement and navigating and negotiating the challenges of outreach. The brief contributions to this forum cannot completely prepare us to be public intellectuals, but it is our hope that they will advance the AAG long-range (2015-2025) plan of creating opportunities to encourage, support, and train geographers to undertake levels and types of public communication, engagement, and advocacy that fit well with their strengths, passions, and political sensitivities. The article presents information about the convention of American Association for the Advancement of Science () held in New York on May 24-29, 1983. The convention includes some 90 sessions and workshops under the rubric of "Science, Engineering, Technology, Education: Toward a World Perspective." There were several sessions of potential interest to geographers, though few explicitly included a spatial perspective. Physical geographers could attend sessions on long-run climatic change impacts, sources of radiatively important trace species, plate tectonics and biogeography, and tropical rain forests and the atmosphere, among others.

This study investigates potential changes in nitrogen and phosphorus loads under a warmer and wetter climate, urban growth, and combined changes in the Conestoga River Basin and its five subbasins in southeastern Pennsylvania. A GIS-based hydrochemical modal was employed for assessing the sensitivity of the basins to the projected changes in 2030. Under the HadCM2 climate change scenario, mean annual nitrogen and phosphorus loads are expected to increase, with great increases in spring but slight decreases in fall primarily because of changes in monthly precipitation. When climate change and urbanization occur concurrently, mean annual nitrogen loads further increase by 50% in the most urbanizing subbasin. Point source nitrogen control could mitigate negative effects of climate and land use changes, reducing mean annual nitrogen loads to the contemporary baseline level. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Heavy precipitation is one of the most significant natural hazards in the United States today. Knowledge of the climatography, including; the temporal characteristics, of this phenomenon is necessary in order to better plan, design for, and predict this hazard. In this study, cluster analysis is used to simplify and clarify the spatial patterns in the time of day heavy precipitation most frequently occurs. Regions with similar diurnal properties are delineated, and the substantial seasonal fluctuations in the regional patterns are traced. Of particular interest is the expansion during the cool season and contraction during the warm season of the nocturnal precipitation regime in the central United States. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A climatic moisture index (Im) used extensively by C. W. Thornthwaite and others is examined, and a modified version of the index is proposed. Arbitrary limits [-100 ≤ Im 100 (∞ - 1)], combined with its dimensionless property, make the original index difficult to interpret. Our refined version also is dimensionless, but the limits have been recast so that -1 ≤ Im ≤ 1. Wet climates have positive values of Im while dry climates are negative, and the index is symmetric about zero. The nature and sources of early American understanding of an important form of human-induced climatic change, the urban heat island effect, are considered. Recognition and explanation of the phenomenon occurred both earlier and more widely than is usually supposed. The causes of tree invasion into meadows in Lassen Volcanic National Park were investigated by dating invasive trees and associating age structure patterns with regional variations in fire history, grazing, and climate change Massive invasion was associated primarily with cessation of livestock grazing and burning between 1905 and 1933, but climatic changes may also have contributed. Heightened public concerts, pending federal legislation, and calls for an international treaty to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases have placed pressure on resource planners to mitigate the causes and impacts of anthropogenic climate change despite uncertainly over its timing and magnitude. Traditional resource planning. however, as predicated on the assumption that future environmental conditions will emulate the past, and is based on total and national, rather than global, objectives, The threat of global warming calls for a new paradigm of resource planning, including expanded sensitivity analysis, incremental response as the threat evolves, an expanded range unadjustments and planning in a global context. This study utilizes global climate models and crop growth models to estimate the potential agricultural effects of climate change caused by a doubling of atmospheric carbon dioxide for the southern Great Plains.. Protects climate changes cause simulated wheat and corn yields to decrease in the study area. Decreases in modeled grain yields are caused primarily by temperature increases which shorten the duration of crop life cycle and curtail the harvest able biomass production. While physiological effects of carbon dioxide and changing cultivars offer some hope of climate change mitigation, detrimental consequences to regional crop production, including need for increased irrigation, are suggested. Greater emphasis is been placed on large-scale (synoptic and dynamic) climatology in geography. Concurrently, climatological research as a whole has evolved to view climate as a complex, integrated and interactive global system. In this context, we review new directions in large-scale climate studies en geography. We conclude that no matter at which climatic scale geographers are working, the new challenge is to integrate their research and teaching activities into a more holistic, global-systems approach while maintaining and improving their traditional strengths. Two scenarios of CO2-induced climatic change and projections of population and consumptive use of water to the year 2035 are utilized in a climate impact assessment of future water resources in the Great Lakes basin. When expressed as a stream flow/population index, results indicate a sharp decline of this index.
