Archives are not straightforward repositories of history. Instead, they authorize which stories are remembered. In this article we apply the insights of cultural geographers and other influential scholars of archives to analyze the political dimensions of archiving activist histories. A small group of antiprison activists produced a personal archive during the 1990s and 2000s documenting brutality behind bars and efforts to dismantle solitary confinement in California prisons. After being deemed too dangerous to be opened to the public by university archivists, and without a permanent home, the papers were at risk of being lost to history. By presenting our work building this archive, we analyze the limitations of institutional libraries and the vital role played by individuals and independent institutions willing to preserve dangerous papers, and we show how preserving histories of state violence and opposition can become a deeply personal and risky endeavor. This article examined long-term effects of using navigation tools on wayfinding and spatial orientation, through a survey analysis of the experience of using navigation tools and spatial aptitudes, and a behavioral experiment of real-world navigation. Experience of tool use was measured in terms of regular use (time length and frequency) and accumulated experience (time length multiplied by frequency). The survey analysis showed that frequent users of pedestrian navigation systems tended to be low on sense of direction and mental rotation. In contrast, longtime users of maps tended to be high on sense of direction and favor survey navigation strategies. The behavioral experiment showed that people who had more accumulated experience of using in-car navigation systems traveled less efficiently and learned the configurations of traveled routes less accurately with a mobile tool and a paper map. The analysis of long-term effects through structural equation modeling showed that spatial aptitudes and accumulated experience of tool use independently affect wayfinding and spatial orientation and that the negative effects of accumulated experience were larger than the positive effects of spatial aptitudes. The worldwide surge of the location-based game Pokémon Go since mid-2016 has raised debates among online gaming communities and the general public on the unique phenomenon of location spoofing. Location spoofing enables gamers to engage in remote activities by using simulated locational information. This has been largely considered a threat to the underlying fairness of the game and thus to the social order of both online game communities and the real world. This article takes up location spoofing as a unique case to engage the spatial data quality issue, an ever more fundamentally important issue in geography in today's era of big data. Unlike the well-examined systematic error, outliers, and uncertainty in spatial data, our understanding of user-generated spatial data from location spoofing is rather limited. To fill this gap and advance the debates on the spatial data quality issue, we collected a data set of Pokémon and applied actor-network theory to examine the various human and nonhuman agents involved, including gamers, spoofers, game developers, bots, and hackers. We argue that location spoofing in mobile games and other increasingly location-based services (e.g., Uber) should not be merely interpreted as fake data but should be taken seriously as real human geographic data in new spatial (re)assemblages proliferating nowadays. We encourage scholars in geography and neighboring fields to investigate this emerging issue in location-based services, with the goal of promoting a more critical and holistic understanding of geospatial big data. The geography of foreign aid is in flux as a growing number of countries from the Global South are entering the field as donors. A principal barrier to understanding this trend is divergence in the definition of aid among emerging market donors and between emerging market donors and traditional donors, as well as transparency in reporting. This article contributes to analysts' toolbox by developing a comparative analysis of aid definitions for China, the largest Global South donor in the world. Using a leading comprehensive database on Chinese aid flows, I construct a scale of definitional restrictiveness for two governmental and three proxy definitions developed by scholars to reconcile aid from non-Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) donors with OECD definitions. Based on this analysis, I find that the most inclusive definition of aid does not always translate into the highest aid total estimate. In addition, definitions of aid are moving targets rather than static measures, which can include different flows at different times depending on the state of the global foreign aid system and its major players.
