Archives are not straightforward repositories of history. Instead, they authorize which stories are remembered. In this article we apply the insights of cultural geographers and other influential scholars of archives to analyze the political dimensions of archiving activist histories. A small group of antiprison activists produced a personal archive during the 1990s and 2000s documenting brutality behind bars and efforts to dismantle solitary confinement in California prisons. After being deemed too dangerous to be opened to the public by university archivists, and without a permanent home, the papers were at risk of being lost to history. By presenting our work building this archive, we analyze the limitations of institutional libraries and the vital role played by individuals and independent institutions willing to preserve dangerous papers, and we show how preserving histories of state violence and opposition can become a deeply personal and risky endeavor. The article discusses the manuscript review process and advice to prospective authors. The author, Stanley D. Brunn, believes one of the most important determinants of a manuscript being published is sending it to the appropriate journal. Seasoned authors and senior faculty with lengthy publications in many journals over a span of two decades readily acknowledge the importance of selecting the best journal for their research. There are a number of criteria an editor will ask reviewers to use in evaluating a paper for possible publication in a refereed journal.

The academic conference, a site of possible changes in professional knowledge and hierarchy, is an area of academic life rarely studied. Through three main concerns this article illuminates this point for the first time with respect to the status of women and gender research at the last thirty-two annual meetings of the Israeli Geographical Society. First, although men still present the majority of the conference papers, women have increased their share and now constitute one-third of all active participants. Second, women's appearance as chairs of sessions and keynote speakers is significantly lower in proportion to their overall participation in the conference, and they are consistently more involved in its less prestigious aspects. Third, the production of geographic knowledge as reflected in conference papers is gendered, but its pattern differs from that in academia in general. The findings reveal a new facet of the gendered construction of academic life in general, and of Israeli geography in particular, and offer new avenues to revealing the impact of social exclusion on academia. This article examined long-term effects of using navigation tools on wayfinding and spatial orientation, through a survey analysis of the experience of using navigation tools and spatial aptitudes, and a behavioral experiment of real-world navigation. Experience of tool use was measured in terms of regular use (time length and frequency) and accumulated experience (time length multiplied by frequency). The survey analysis showed that frequent users of pedestrian navigation systems tended to be low on sense of direction and mental rotation. In contrast, longtime users of maps tended to be high on sense of direction and favor survey navigation strategies. The behavioral experiment showed that people who had more accumulated experience of using in-car navigation systems traveled less efficiently and learned the configurations of traveled routes less accurately with a mobile tool and a paper map. The analysis of long-term effects through structural equation modeling showed that spatial aptitudes and accumulated experience of tool use independently affect wayfinding and spatial orientation and that the negative effects of accumulated experience were larger than the positive effects of spatial aptitudes. The results and implications are discussed in relation to existing studies of short-term effects and spatial thinking. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recreational geography has taken its place as a major subdivision within the discipline. This generalization is supported by historical evidence, recognition by professional organizations, manuscripts published in geography and interdisciplinary journals, papers presented at AAG meetings, and the application of research findings to practical problems Although recreational geography has reached a quantitative maturity based on volume, it has not attained a qualitative state of development founded on conceptual or theoretical advances. Finally, the subdiscipline is beset by many of the same problems that plague the mother discipline lack of methodological and philosophical consensus, a general paradigm, and a strong, positive public image. This article presents information on several conferences on geography, held in 1985. It is reported that the "National Speleological Society Annual Meeting" was held during June 23-29 in Frankfort, Kentucky. The Society is involved in the exploration and mapping of caves and furthering research in cave and karst science. This convention was attended by nearly 1,000 people who participated in five days of papers, nine mini-courses, sixteen workshops, and several field trips. The "Ninth World Forestry Congress," reportedly, was held during July 1-10 in Mexico City. The Congress was organized under the auspices of the Mexican Covernment through its Ministry of Agriculture and Hydraulic Resources and with collaboration of United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization. Delegates representing forestry and agricultural government agencies, private industry, research and teaching, and international organizations participated in paper sessions and field trips. The topic of this convention was "Forestry Resources in the Integral Development of Society." The article further reports that the "Twenty-first Annual American Water Resources Association Conference and Symposium" was held during August 11-16 in Tucson, Arizona. The conference theme was "Water Demand: Sharing a Limited Resource" and the symposium theme "Groundwater Contamination and Reclamation."

Every honor brings responsibilities, and higher the honor the greater the responsibilities. Editing a scholarly journal is a high honor and a great privilege that also entails responsibilities. Becoming an editor is akin to taking holy vows. The editor must be prepared to lay aside all else to give highest priority to the task. The editor must accept the necessity of sacrificing a significant segment of an academic career and virtually all personal discretionary time. Editors are personally and directly responsible for the quality of the writing and the organization of the papers that are published in the journals they edit. Every badly written article, paragraph, even sentence in a poorly edited journal reflects first and foremost on the competence of the editor, but a poorly edited journal ultimately reflects unfavorably on all geographers too.

The article reports on certain major conferences on human geography. The U.S. Bureau of the Census inaugurated its Annual Research Conference series in 1985 to provide an open forum for the discussion of Bureau-related research questions. Of particular interest to geographers was the session on "Improving National Population Projection Methodology." A NATO Advanced Studies Institute on dynamics of spatial systems was held in Hanstholm, Denmark, on August 3-14, 1985. The conference, attended by some 75 researchers in the fields of geography, economics, statistics, mathematics, and physics, focused on the mathematical modeling of phenomenon with spatial and temporal components.

They have to get rid of them and that takes hard work. The author, Anthony R. de Souza, is certain that reading lots of good prose seldom found in scholarly journals will help. He is equally certain that only the habitual practice of writing and rewriting will make people better writers. Author's advice is to start writing immediately and only during most productive working hours. Write whatever comes into one's head as fast as one can without recourse to notes, data, books and other aids.

This paper introduces the concept of black holes and loose connections in a global urban hierarchy. Black holes are defined as large cities, with a population of over 3 million, that are not classified as world cities. The paper draws upon a classification that uses advanced producer services as an indicator of world city status. Large, nonworld cities are identified, and provisional ideas about explaining their position are outlined. Connectivity and population data are used in a simple regression analysis to identify loose connections: cities whose connectivity is less than that predicted by their population. All geographers rise and may create maps in their professional activities. While perceived by some as merely tools to present spatial information, maps are actually complicated communication mechanisms. Many geographers spend tremendous amounts of time learning about verbal and written communication (how to speak, listen, read critically, and write effectively). But to many, one of the basic tools of geographic communication, the map, is a general source of unknown. Many previous papers have focused on how to create effective maps; this paper focuses on how people read and use navigation maps. Everyone completes map-reading tasks, uses (often different) strategies, and processes information through cognitive processing. Geographers may benefit from understanding how they, as well as their map-viewing public, process the information contained on their maps. Modem urban transportation systems continuously challenge, and are challenged by, the changing nature of 21st-century travel demand. Today, congestion is the norm in cities of the United States, and researchers and practitioners are seeking solutions to these problems. Urban commuting is identified as contributing to the suboptimal performance of transportation systems. This paper offers a review and critique of recent research on urban commuting, emphasizing geographical dimensions of this topic. Three broad areas of research related to urban commuting are discussed. These include (1) urban sustainability, (2) land use, and (3) geographic information systems (GIS). Major themes are examined in an effort to elicit thought on future geographic research. At the conclusion of the paper, summary remarks are provided and avenues for research are outlined. In this article the author states that responsibility has two sides where editorship is concerned. Editors must be responsible to the profession, the authors, and the readers. These three groups must in turn be responsible to the editors of journals they support: the profession by encouraging innovation, the authors by submitting original and exciting articles, and the readers by ensuring that all concerned, function in an ethical and professional manner. Ultimately a journal reflects its profession. Good editors facilitate and encourage the best that the profession has to offer.
