The high temperature superconducting (HTS) magnet has been developed for the high magnetic field applications such as NMR , MRI and other industrial machinery. In designing process of these HTS magnets, the accurate estimation on the critical current ( Ic ) is essential to predict and secure electromagnetic performance.the The critical current of 2G HTS tape has anisotropic Icdegradation characteristics with the application of magnetic field angular dependency of critical current. It is known that the – perpendicular magnetic field to the face of HTS tape makes dominant degradation on the critical current for conventional 2G HTS tape. However, recently developed 2G HTS tapehas more complex characteristics due to the artificial pinning center. Therefore, the method for estimation reflecting such characteristics of 2G HTS tape needs to b Ic e devised. The method considering the angular dependency is introduced in this paper. And the result of newly devised method is compared with that of previous method.

Fault current limiting (FCL) cable is a kind of superconducting cable which has a function of limiting the fault current at the fault of power grid. The superconducting cable detours the fault current through its stabilizer to keep the temperature as low as possible. On the other hands, the FCL cable permits the temperature rise within some acceptable limit and the fault current is limited by the consequent increase of the resistance of superconducting cable. This kind of FCL cable is called 'resistive FCL cable' because it uses resistive impedance to limit the fault current. In this paper, we suggest a novel concept of FCL cable, which is named as 'inductive FCL cable'. The inductive FCL cable is similar as the magnetic shielding fault current limiter in its operating mechanism. The magnetic field of superconducting cable is almost perfectly shielded by the induced current at the shielding layer during its normal operation. However, at the fault condition, quench occurs at the shielding layer by the induced current higher than its critical current and the magnetic field is spread out of the shielding layer. It will induce additional inductive impedance to the superconducting cable and the inductive impedance can be increased more by installing some material with high magnetic susceptibility around the superconducting cable. We examined the feasibility of inductive FCL cable with simple elemental experiments. The current limiting performance of inductive FCL cable was estimated considering an arbitrary power grid and its fault condition.

AMR (Active Magnetic Regenerative) refrigerators require the large variation of the magnetic field and a HTS magnet can be used. The amount of AC loss is very important considering the overall efficiency of the AMR refrigerator. However, it is very hard to estimate the precise loss of the HTS magnet because the magnetic field distribution around the conductor itself depends on the coil configuration and the neighboring HTS wires interact each other through the distorted magnetic field by the screening current Therefore, the AC loss of HTS magnet should be calculated using the whole configuration of the HTS magnet with superconducting characteristic. This paper describes the AC loss of the HTS magnet by an appropriate FEM approach, which uses the non-linear characteristic of HTS conductor. The analysis model is based on the 2-D FEM model, called as `magnetic field formulation and edge-element model`, for whole coil configuration in cylindrical coordinates. The effects of transport current and stacked conductors on the AC loss are investigated considering the field-dependent critical current. The PDE model of `Comsol multiphysics` is used for the FEM analysis with properly implemented equations for axisymmetric model.

With continuous development of the 2nd generation HTS conductor, the critical current of the conductor is also increasing. However, many applications require more than 2 conductors in parallel to transport large current. Applications such as HTS power cables and some HTS current leads usually need much larger transport current than that provided by a single conductor and they require more than several tens of HTS conductors. In the case of parallel connection of multiple HTS conductors, the current distribution depends on the contact resistance of each conductor at the terminals for DC operation. The non-uniform distribution of the terminal resistances results in a non-uniform distribution of the current. The resultant current non-uniformity affects on the measurement of the I-V curve and the thermal performance of the multiple conductors. This paper describes the I-V curves obtained from multiply connected HTS conductors with different terminal contact resistances to investigate the relationship between the distorted I-V curve and heat generation.

An HTS DC power cable is expected to perfectly eliminate transmission loss caused by resistance. However, when the HTS DC power cable is applied to the power system, loss of the HTS DC power cable is generated due to harmonics caused by HVDC converter. We designed and analyzed the HTS DC power cable with a critical current of 1 kA to investigate the loss characteristics using a finite element method package. In this paper, the loss characteristics caused by harmonics in the HTS DC power cable were analyzed according to order and magnitude of harmonics. Based on the analysis results, the critical current of HTS DC power cable considered with the rated current could be determined to minimize the capacity of cooling system for the design the HTS DC power cable.
