This article presents an interview with Oscar Olivera, a longtime unionist, and a spokesperson for the Coalition in Defense of Water and Life in Bolivia. When asked why recently so many revolts have taken place in Bolivia, and not in other countries such as Chile and the U.S. he said that the main reason is that they are fighting to survive. He said that people in Bolivia don't live like people in the U.S. with cars, consuming a lot of Coca-Cola and food, with a lot of appliances. Commenting on what people outside Bolivia can do to support these social movements he said that without the struggle of the social movements in the North, a victory in the South would be impossible.

This article describes the author's participation in a protest against the U.S. military intervention in the Middle East in 1990. Early morning on the last Monday in August 1990, three friends of the author--Bonnie Urfer, Susan B. Nelson, and Samuel H. Day Jr.--chained themselves to the entrance of the Federal office building in Madison, Wisconsin. Before snapping the padlocks on their manacles, they had posted signs announcing the building would remain shut until U.S. President George Bush brought the troops home. The author was on hand to hold up banners or pass out leaflets or just to bear witness to the action. The leaflets consisted of a brief statement, headed: No War in Our Name. The police arrived a few minutes after the protest began. Madison police are used to dealing with demonstrations and with these particular protesters. Day and Urfer are seasoned demonstrators who have served prison sentences for trespassing at nuclear-weapon sites. It took only seconds for the police to cut the chains that bound Urfer and Nelson and Day to the Federal building's door. Even though, the protest has no perceptible immediate impact on U.S. conduct in the Middle East, what matters is that the people did something. Even if they cannot change the world by doing that, the protests keep the world from changing them.
