The Bayley scale is one of the most widely used instruments for assessing infant development. This article aimed to systematically review the contribution of the Bayley social-emotional scale in the assessment of social-emotional development in preterm infants. This systematic review followed PRISMA guidelines and was registered in PROSPERO. According to the inclusion criteria, 19 articles were selected from electronic databases. The results indicate reduced rates in evaluating the scale for children with lower gestational age, birth weight, and the association with environmental, biological, and hospital clinical factors. However, no analysis was found between the axes that guide the social-emotional development milestones present in the Bayley assessment and the developmental outcomes of preterm children. Bayley's social-emotional scale and other assessment methods can jointly compose a detailed and sensitive protocol for preterm infants regarding early childhood emotional health care. This study verified the predictive value of the tasks of the Rey Complex Figures test (type of copy and type of memory) and the Drawing of the Human Figure (non-verbal intelligence) to assess school performance in children of Elementary School I. A cross-sectional study involving 344 students, aged between six and 10 years old (M = 7.99; SD = 1.47). Rey Complex Figures and the Human Figure Drawing were applied collectively in the classroom. The results showed significant positive correlations between visual perception, immediate memory and non-verbal intelligence with Portuguese and math scores. The path analysis model indicated that non-verbal intelligence was able to predict school performance in Portuguese and mathematics subjects, while planning and visual perception skills were significant in predicting math performance. Screening tools in health and education provide quick indicators that anticipate diagnostic evaluation and treatment. Faced with the socio-emotional competences of children, the Ages & Stages Questionnaires: Social-Emotional (ASQ:SE) was used in the population of children enrolled in public pre-schools in the city of Rio de Janeiro during 2011. The objective of this work was to investigate aspects of its validity and reliability. Data from 23,334 children (50.6% boys) being an average age of 5 years old (SD: 3 months) and enrolled in 625 pre-schools were analyzed. After an intensive data analysis, the Exploratory and Confirmatory Factor Analysis, the results were favorable to the multidimensional model with a social and emotional dimension: 2 (463) = 46363.495, p <0.001; RMSEA = 0.067; CFI = 0.918; TLI = 0.913. Reliability indicators were adequate. The results confirmed validity aspects of the ASQ:SE, thereby verifying its use for children aged 5 years old. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study aimed to identify and analyze parental conceptions of the communicative intent of infants at 3 and 6 months in the first year of life. A longitudinal design was used, including 20 mothers and 20 fathers who were interviewed in two stages. The interviews were literally transcribed and then qualitatively analyzed. It was identified more similarities than differences between maternal and paternal speeches. It was found that parental reports presented conceptions that specific child behavior may be evidence of intentional communication skills. Especially in the second stage, when infants were 6 months old, parents mentioned child behavior that seemed to express wishes and indicate intention. This study investigated the performance of children from the Brazilian Northeast region, from 7 to 10 years in phonemic and semantic verbal fluency tasks. The participants were 102 subjects (62 girls and 40 boys) who performed three phonemic and three semantic fluency tasks. The results were submitted to correlational and variance analysis to investigate the influence of the variables age and gender on the subjects performance. There was no effect of gender on the results. Significant contrasts between age groups were found, and better performance was observed on phonemic tasks. Also, the performance in this task changed along development, in contrast to what happened with the semantic fluency. The findings seem to be in accordance to neurodevelopmental aspects, taken into account that explicit memory systems show more precocious maturational course, with earlier consolidation, in comparison to the executive functions and frontal lobes, which go on developing until adult ages. The entry into elementary education - EE - represents an important transition in child development. The study aimed to assess stability and change in indicators of academic achievement, general intelligence, social skills, behavioral adjustment, and stress between the 1st, 2nd and 3rd year of EE. The participants were 151 children (79 boys), longitudinally evaluated using the Social Skills Rating System, Raven's Progressive Matrices, Provinha Brazil, Child Stress Scale and the School Stressors Inventory. The results indicated at least moderate stability of the variables and a continuous increase in academic achievement. Girls showed better indicators of social skills and behavioral adjustment. Children showed more externalizing behaviors in the 1st year; more stress symptoms in the 2nd year; greater general intelligence, more academic social skills and fewer stress symptoms in the 3rd year. These trends suggest that the transition extends up to 2nd year, whereas developmental achievements are consolidated in the 3rd year. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The parenting practices are the forms used by parents to impound their children's behavior. From this perspective, the goal of this study was to analyze how parenting styles and children's academic achievement relate to one other; thus, all children's school grades in the subjects of Mathematics and Portuguese were recorded. Study participants were 203 children aged between eight and eleven years old, of both sexes, who were enrolled between third and fifth year from two public schools in the interior of Paraná, Brazil. Participants responded to Parenting Styles Inventory. Correlations were found between education and academic performance, especially with maternal practices. Significant differences were observed in mean parenting practices and parenting styles referenced by students with high and low academic performance. This study discussed the knowledge caretakers have on the development of children who live in institutional shelter, using a triage instrument. Took part of this study four five-year old children and the caretakers. The Ages and Stages Questionnaires were used, they are composed by 21 questionnaires which comprise six areas of development. The results demonstrated that communication was an area poorly scored by the children, their main difficulties are in verbalizing and focusing on the proposed task. The gross motor coordination field which gathers among other things jumping and running, all motivated by the environment of the institution, fit the expectations, hence received the maximum score according to ASQ-3. This study aimed to identify possible variables associated with cognitive, behavioral and emotional development in a cohort of school children, based on biological (sex, gestational age and birth weight) and socioeconomic variables (marital status, maternal and paternal education, occupation of head of household, socioeconomic status, and number of household members). We evaluated 790 children born in a cohort of Ribeirão Preto (SP), Brazil, with 10/11 years of age. The Raven Test was used for cognitive assessment and the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire was utilized for emotional and behavioral assessment. By means of multivariate logistic regression analysis (CI 95%) we found that: 1) low maternal schooling was associated with behavioral and emotional problems and poor cognitive function, 2) being female was considered as a protective factor against behavioral problems and 3) low birth weight and prematurity were not associated with the outcomes investigated [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
