This article examines the use of the alchemical concept of "mining the salt" and applies it to contemporary Jungian analysis for working with clients who present themselves with histories of trauma that have caused depression, anxiety, addictions, and compulsions, among other issues. "Working the Salt Mines of Eros" means digging into the suffering of our lives, confronting what we have not been able to confront, and allowing its deep, meaningful transformation into new relatedness with one's true Self. Author Carol Dieckmann offers a distillation of her analytic training thesis for the C. G. Jung Institute of Colorado, focusing here on a heuristic approach, using her own visions and dreams to illuminate the "salt path" of individuation moving from suffering to wisdom.
