Abstract

The article discusses U.S. Internal Revenue Service (IRS) regulations under the U.S. Affordable Care Act requiring nonprofit hospitals seeking tax exemption to regularly conduct community health needs assessments (CHNA) and respond to community health needs. Topics covered include ways in which unmet legal needs function as health determinants, the participation of hospitals in medical-legal partnerships (MLP), and the role of legal barriers in community health.
