10. No Longer Impossible: The Self-lensing Binary KIC 8145411 is a Triple

Abstract

Five self-lensing binaries (SLBs) have been discovered with data from the Kepler mission. One of these systems is KIC 8145411, which was reported to host an extremely low mass (ELM; 0.2 M⊙) white dwarf (WD) in a 456 days orbit with a solar-type companion. The system has been dubbed “impossible,” because evolutionary models predict that ∼0.2 M⊙WDs should only be found in tight orbits (Porb≲ days). In this work, we show that KIC 8145411 is in fact a hierarchical triple system: it contains a WD orbiting a solar-type star, with another solar-type star ∼700 au away. The wide companion was unresolved in the Kepler light curves, was just barely resolved in Gaia DR3, and is resolved beyond any doubt by high-resolution imaging. We show that the presence of this tertiary confounded previous mass measurements of the WD for two reason: it dilutes the amplitude of the self-lensing pulses, and it reduces the apparent radial velocity (RV) variability amplitude of the WD’s companion due to line blending. By jointly fitting the system’s light curves, RVs, and multi-band photometry using a model with two luminous stars, we obtain a revised WD mass of (0.53 ± 0.01)M⊙. Both luminous stars are near the end of their main-sequence evolution. The WD is thus not an ELM WD, and the system does not suffer the previously proposed challenges to its formation history. Similar to the other SLBs and the population of astrometric WD binaries recently identified from Gaia data, KIC 8145411 has parameters in tension with standard expectations for formation through both stable and unstable mass transfer (MT). The system’s properties are likely best understood as a result of unstable MT from an AGB star donor.

Abstract

We present mean radial velocities for 143 stars in Selected Area 57 at the north Galactic pole that are suitable for use as secondary velocity standards. The stars were drawn from a magnitude-limited sample and are mostly fainter than 11th magnitude in V. They span a wide range of effective temperatures and surface gravities and thus provide a suitable source of targets for observed templates. The mean radial velocities are based on at least 10 observations spanning at least 8200 days, and are accurate typically to 0.2 km s?1, with no obvious signs of variable velocity or composite spectra.

19. THE SEMI-REGULAR VARIABLE FS COMAE--EVIDENCE FOR RADIAL OSCILLATIONS

Abstract

We present newly obtained radial-velocity measurements of the semi-regular variable FS Comae, together with available photoelectric data and visual brightness estimates. Both the light variations in the V band and the radial velocities show a similar periodicity of about 55 days, with a phase lag of approximately 40 days between the two. These observations strongly suggest radial pulsation as the mechanism driving the variations. There is evidence that both the photometric period and the spectroscopic period are variable over long timescales.

20. Asteroseismic Properties of Solar-type Stars Observed with the NASA K2Mission: Results from Campaigns 1-3 and Prospects for Future Observations

Abstract

We present an asteroseismic analysis of 33 solar-type stars observed in short cadence (SC) during Campaigns (C) 1-3 of the NASA K2mission. We were able to extract both average seismic parameters and individual mode frequencies for stars with dominant frequencies up to ?3300 ?Hz, and we find that data for some targets are good enough to allow for a measurement of the rotational splitting. Modeling of the extracted parameters is performed by using grid-based methods using average parameters and individual frequencies together with spectroscopic parameters. For the target selection in C3, stars were chosen as in C1 and C2 to cover a wide range in parameter space to better understand the performance and noise characteristics. For C3 we still detected oscillations in 73% of the observed stars that we proposed. Future K2campaigns hold great promise for the study of nearby clusters and the chemical evolution and age-metallicity relation of nearby field stars in the solar neighborhood. We expect oscillations to be detected in ?388 SC targets if the K2mission continues until C18, which will greatly complement the ?500 detections of solar-like oscillations made for SC targets during the nominal Keplermission. For ?30-40 of these, including several members of the Hyades open cluster, we furthermore expect that inference from interferometry should be possible.
