11. Sentient Body: Re-liberation of Dissident Subjectivity through Skinship

Abstract

By addressing the practice of contemporary scientific fieldwork through rereading Stanislaw Lem’s Solaris, this essay investigates the ethical agency of skinship. It explores haptic experiences accompanying oceanographic research as a mode of cognition that addresses faults of distant observation mediated by vision machines (remotely operated deep-sea probes, animal-machine cyborgs, and sensors’ networks). In Lem’s novel, we find the situation of scientific failure that potentiates learning from undesired outcome through seeing and thinking with touch. This paper looks at Lem’s intention to emphasise the importance of subjective experiences through Guattari’s critique of “mythical scientific objectivity.” In Chaosmosis, Guattari depicts the latter as a miasma, spreading the disease of subjectivity repression among thinkers. The Solarian ocean constitutes a cure to it in the form of “pathogenic psychic disturbance,” reversing the separation of reason from the living body. More-than-human body-intelligence, which is unexploitable and unable to participate in the labour of “civilized” communication, forces Lem’s protagonist to proceed beyond the inherently exploitative research procedures of natural sciences. In Solaris, the situated and reversible experience of extreme proximity to nonhuman others appears crucial for the adequate interpretation of data and ensuring ethical use of scientific discoveries. Haptic contact opens up a surface of the scientist’s body as a vulnerable meat–canvas–sensual flesh and inspires an appetite for connectedness with non-monetisable others. This story invites us to rethink immersive fieldwork practices traditionally aimed at extracting data to enable industrial progress. The paper looks at the subjective sensations, often undervalued by scientists, as the outcomes of liminal experience of skinship, which invokes empathy, and therefore, an ethical perspective.

14. The Weird as Contingency and Fate in the Empty Space Trilogy

Abstract

The paper examines how in his Empty Space trilogy, M. John Harrison uses weird fiction to represent the failure of both human epistemology and agency in dealing with the new and the unthinkable. The unthinkable, according to Eugene Thacker, is the space outside the human, the world-without-us. Following Timothy Morton, the Kefahuchi Tract, an apparently empty space in the universe where weird phenomena distort the rules of physics, is presented in this study as a hyperobject that distorts reality beyond human comprehension. The characters in the trilogy have to accept the contingency, in the sense expressed by Quentin Meillassoux, not only of the universe around them, of which they are only a part, but of their own Fate, which is as meaningless as a throwing of dice. Out of the frustration of his characters at the discovery of their irrelevance in the face of the Tract, Harrison pushes them to their limits until some of them manage to understand that openness to the Other and acceptance of the irremediable uncertainty of everything are the only possible ethical attitudes to survive in a world of constant change.

15. Monster Comics, Wetlands, and the Weird: Steve Gerber’s Man-Thing and Alan Moore’s Swamp Thing

Abstract

This paper examines how comic books set in wetlands have used weird tropes to explore environmental ideas. The essential wetness of landscapes made these places hostile to humans. Hence, these ecosystems were often seen in a negative light or as places that were supernatural and alien. Swamp monsters, like Marvel’s Man-Thing and DC’s Swamp Thing were used by comic creators to promote ecological themes. These characters were steeped in weird tropes as well. Just as these wetlands were both water and land, these monsters were both human and inhuman. Marvel’s Man-Thing came to embody the divide between both water and land and this world and other strange dimensions. DC’s Swamp-Thing was used by Alan Moore to show how the weird is connected to the human-nature divide.

16. A False Encounter: An Interspecies Martian Tale

Abstract

This project concerns a fictional scenario in which an AI rover encounters an alien life form in the crevices of a Martian rock. The seconds in which this encounter takes place are mysteriously wiped out from the rover’s Pancam metadata. It is speculated that this was a conscious decision, perhaps in an attempt to keep this moment in secret, safe from human knowledge. By employing standard research techniques along with interviews with experts in the field, as well as speculative fiction methods, the present paper attempts to explore two main ideas: the possibility of interplanetary multispecies coexistence (beyond the presence of humans), and a prediction of a future episode of AI/digital dissidence. Could machines be inspired by humanist literature in their quest for consciousness? Could machines find new ways to achieve solidarity with other nonhuman biological entities? Could their disobedience be more humane than the values of the humans who programmed them?
