BackgroundIt is technically challenging to design compact yet sensitive miniature catheter radio frequency (RF) coils for endovascular interventional MR imaging.MethodsIn this work, a new design method for catheter RF coils is proposed based on the coaxial transmission line resonator (TLR) technique. Due to its distributed circuit, the TLR catheter coil does not need any lumped capacitors to support its resonance, which simplifies the practical design and construction and provides a straightforward technique for designing miniature catheter-mounted imaging coils that are appropriate for interventional neurovascular procedures. The outer conductor of the TLR serves as an RF shield, which prevents electromagnetic energy loss, and improves coil Q factors. It also minimizes interaction with surrounding tissues and signal losses along the catheter coil. To investigate the technique, a prototype catheter coil was built using the proposed coaxial TLR technique and evaluated with standard RF testing and measurement methods and MR imaging experiments. Numerical simulation was carried out to assess the RF electromagnetic field behavior of the proposed TLR catheter coil and the conventional lumped-element catheter coil.ResultsThe proposed TLR catheter coil was successfully tuned to 64 MHz for proton imaging at 1.5 T. B1 fields were numerically calculated, showing improved magnetic field intensity of the TLR catheter coil over the conventional lumped-element catheter coil. MR images were acquired from a dedicated vascular phantom using the TLR catheter coil and also the system body coil. The TLR catheter coil is able to provide a significant signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) increase (a factor of 200 to 300) over its imaging volume relative to the body coil.ConclusionsCatheter imaging RF coil design using the proposed coaxial TLR technique is feasible and advantageous in endovascular interventional MR imaging applications.

BackgroundRadiative coil arrays, e.g., dipole or monopole arrays, are increasingly used in MR signal excitation and reception for ultrahigh field MRI. Technically, it is challenging to suppress the electromagnetic (EM) coupling of radiative array elements due to their unique structures.MethodsIn this study, we proposed a combined decoupling and matching network (DMN) for monopole arrays for MRI applications. Compared with separate decoupling network and matching network, the combined network proposed here needs less components and rather suitable for decoupling radiative arrays in MRI.ResultsOur study shows that the transmission coefficient between two coupled monopoles can be reduced from -5 dB to -24.8 dB by using the combined DMN. It is also clearly demonstrated in this study that this decoupling method is a port decoupling method rather than an element decoupling method.ConclusionsWith the proposed DMN, the monopole coil provides locally strong and spatially diverse B1 fields, which is essential to the improvement of MR sensitivity and parallel imaging performance.

Quadrature coils are often desired in MR applications because they can improve MR sensitivity and also reduce excitation power. In this work, we propose, for the first time, a quadrature array design strategy for parallel transmission at 298 MHz using single-feed circularly polarized (CP) patch antenna technique. Each array element is a nearly square ring microstrip antenna and is fed at a point on the diagonal of the antenna to generate quadrature magnetic fields. Compared with conventional quadrature coils, the single-feed structure is much simple and compact, making the quadrature coil array design practical. Numerical simulations demonstrate that the decoupling between elements is better than -35 dB for all the elements and the RF fields are homogeneous with deep penetration and quadrature behavior in the area of interest. Bloch equation simulation is also performed to simulate the excitation procedure by using an 8-element quadrature planar patch array to demonstrate its feasibility in parallel transmission at the ultrahigh field of 7 Tesla.

Radiofrequency (RF) field (B 1) inhomogeneity due to shortened wavelength at high field is a major cause of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) nonuniformity in high dielectric biological samples (e.g., human body). In this work, we propose a method to improve the B 1 and MRI homogeneity by using pre-emphasized non-uniform B 1 distribution. The intrinsic B 1 distribution that could be generated by a RF volume coil, specifically a microstrip transmission line (MTL) coil used in this work, was pre-emphasized in the sample's periphery region of interest to compensate for the central brightness induced by high frequency interference effect due to shortened wave length. This pre-emphasized non-uniform B 1 can be realized by varying the parameters of microstrip elements, such as the substrate thickness of MTL volume coil. Both numerical simulation and phantom MR imaging studies were carried out to investigate the feasibility and merit of the proposed method in achieving homogeneous MR images. The simulation results demonstrate that by using a pre-emphasized B 1 distribution generated by the MTL volume coil, relatively uniform B 1 distribution and homogeneous MR image (98% homogeneity) within the spherical phantom (15 cm diameter) were achieved with 4.5 mm thickness. The B 1 and MRI intensity distributions of a 16-element MTL volume coil with fixed substrate thickness and five varied saline loads were modeled and experimentally tested. Similar results from both simulation and experiments were obtained, suggesting substantial improvements of B 1 and MRI homogeneities within the phantom containing 125 mM saline. The overall results demonstrate an efficient B 1 shimming approach for improving high field MRI.

Background: Low-field open magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) systems, typically operating at magnetic field strengths below 1 Tesla, has greatly expanded the accessibility of MRI technology to meet a wide range of patient needs. However, the inherent challenges of low-field MRI, such as limited signal-to-noise ratios and limited availability of dedicated radiofrequency (RF) coils, have prompted the need for innovative coil designs that can improve imaging quality and diagnostic capabilities. In this work, we introduce a multimodal axial array resonator and its implementation in a volume coil, or referred to as a coupled stack-up volume coil, to address these challenges in low-field open MRI., Methods: A prototype coupled stack-up volume coil was designed with optimized coil spacing to improve B1 field homogeneity. Finite difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations were conducted to evaluate the coil's performance, including B1 field efficiency and specific absorption rate (SAR). Bench tests were performed to validate the simulated results using oil phantoms. Comparisons were made with a solenoid coil, a birdcage coil, and an equal gap coupled coil throughout the study., Results: Numeral electromagnetic studies demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed coupled stack-up volume coil, achieving 47.7% higher transmit/receive efficiency and 68% more uniform magnetic field distribution compared to conventional birdcage coils. The results of the bench tests show that the achieved B1 field efficiency of the coupled stack-up volume coil is 11.48 μT / W , representing a 57.3% improvement in comparison to that of a conventional birdcage coil., Conclusions: A multimodal axial array resonator technique or coupled stack-up technique is successfully developed for the design of low field MR RF volume coils. The proposed coupled stack-up volume coil outperforms the conventional volume coils in terms of B1 efficiency, imaging coverage, and low-frequency operation capability. Background: Knee tissues such as tendon, ligament and meniscus have short T 2 * relaxation times and tend to show little to no signal in conventional magnetic resonance acquisitions. An ultrashort echo time (UTE) technique offers a unique tool to probe fast-decaying signals in these tissues. Clinically relevant factors should be evaluated to quantify the sensitivity needed to distinguish diseased from control tissues. Therefore, the objectives of this study were to (I) quantify the repeatability of UTE-T 2 * relaxation time values, and (II) evaluate the effects of fat suppression and (III) knee positioning on UTE-T 2 * relaxation time quantification., Methods: A dual-echo, three-dimensional center-out radially sampling UTE and conventional gradient echo sequences were utilized to image gadolinium phantoms, one ex-vivo specimen, and five in-vivo subjects on a clinical 3T scanner. Scan-rescan images from the phantom and in-vivo experiments were used to evaluate the repeatability of T 2 * relaxation time values. Fat suppressed and non-suppressed images were acquired for phantoms and the ex-vivo specimen to evaluate the effect of fat suppression on T 2 * relaxation time quantifications. The effect of knee positioning was evaluated by imaging in-vivo subjects in extended and flexed positions within the knee coil and comparing T 2 * relaxation times quantified from tissues in each position., Results: Phantom and in-vivo measurements demonstrated repeatable T 2 * mapping, where the percent difference between T 2 * relaxation time quantified from scan-rescan images was less than 8% for the phantom and knee tissues. The coefficient of variation across fat suppressed and non-suppressed images was less than 5% for the phantoms and ex-vivo knee tissues, showing that fat suppression had a minimal effect on T 2 * relaxation time quantification. Knee position introduced variability to T 2 * quantification of the anterior cruciate ligament, posterior cruciate ligament, and patellar tendon, with percent differences exceeding 20%, but the meniscus showed a percent difference less than 10%., Conclusions: The 3D radial UTE sequence presented in this study could potentially be used to detect clinically relevant changes in mean T 2 * relaxation time, however, reproducibility of these values is impacted by knee position consistency between scans., Competing Interests: Conflicts of Interest: All authors have completed the ICMJE uniform disclosure form (available at https://qims.amegroups.com/article/view/10.21037/qims-23-459/coif). Proton and heteronuclear MRI/MRS using dual-tuned (DT) coils could provide both anatomical and metabolic images without repositioning the subject. However, it is technologically challenging to attain sufficiently electromagnetic (EM) decoupling between the heteronuclear channel and proton channel, and keep the imaging areas and profiles of two nuclear channels highly matched. In this study, a hybrid monopole/loop technique was proposed for DT coil design and this technique was validated by implementing and testing a DT (1)H/(23)Na coil for MR imaging at 7T. The RF fields of the monopole ((1)H channel) and regular L/C loop ((23)Na channel) were orthogonal and intrinsically EM decoupled. Bench measurement results demonstrated the isolation between the two nuclear channels was better than -28 dB at both nuclear frequencies. Compared with the conventional DT coil using trap circuits, the monopole/loop DT coil had higher MR sensitivity for sodium imaging. The experimental results indicated that the monopole/loop technique might be a simple and efficient design for multinuclear imaging at ultrahigh fields. Additionally, the proposed DT coils based on the monopole/loop technique can be used as building blocks in designing multichannel DT coil arrays.

Combination of parallel transmission and sparse pulse is able to shorten the excitation by using both the coil sensitivity and sparse k-space, showing improved fast excitation capability over the use of parallel transmission alone. However, to design an optimal k-space trajectory for sparse parallel transmission is a challenging task. In this work, a randomly perturbed sparse k-space trajectory is designed by modifying the path of a spiral trajectory along the sparse k-space data, and the sparse parallel transmission RF pulses are subsequently designed based on this optimal trajectory. This method combines the parallel transmission and sparse spiral k-space trajectory, potentially to further reduce the RF transmission time. Bloch simulation of 90° excitation by using a four channel coil array is performed to demonstrate its feasibility. Excitation performance of the sparse parallel transmission technique at different reduction factors of 1, 2, and 4 is evaluated. For comparison, parallel excitation using regular spiral trajectory is performed. The passband errors of the excitation profiles of each transmission are calculated for quantitative assessment of the proposed excitation method.

Low resolution images are often acquired in in vivo MR applications involving in large field-of-view (FOV) and high speed imaging, such as, whole-body MRI screening and functional MRI applications. In this work, we investigate a multi-slice imaging strategy for acquiring low resolution images by using compressed sensing (CS) MRI to enhance the image quality without increasing the acquisition time. In this strategy, low resolution images of all the slices are acquired using multiple-slice imaging sequence. In addition, extra randomly sampled data in one center slice are acquired by using the CS strategy. These additional randomly sampled data are multiplied by the weighting functions generated from low resolution full k-space images of the two slices, and then interpolated into the k-space of other slices. In vivo MR images of human brain were employed to investigate the feasibility and the performance of the proposed method. Quantitative comparison between the conventional low resolution images and those from the proposed method was also performed to demonstrate the advantage of the method.

Ultrahigh field (UHF) MR imaging of deeply located target in high dielectric biological samples faces challenges due to the reduced penetration depth at the corresponding high frequencies. Radiative coils, e.g., dipole and monopole coils, have recently been applied for UHF MRI applications to obtain better signal-noise-ratio (SNR) in the area deep inside the human head and body. However, due to the unique structure of radiative coil elements, electromagnetic (EM) coupling between elements in radiative coil arrays cannot be readily addressed by using traditional decoupling methods such as element overlapping and L/C decoupling network. A new decoupling method based on induced current elimination (ICE) or magnetic wall technique has recently been proposed and has demonstrated feasibility in designing microstrip transmission line (MTL) arrays and L/C loop arrays. In this study, an array of two monopole elements decoupled using magnetic wall decoupling technique was designed, constructed and analyzed numerically and experimentally to investigate the feasibility of the decoupling technique in radiative coil array designs for MR imaging at 7 T. An L-shaped capacitive network was employed as the matching circuit and the reflection coefficients (S11) of the monopole element achieved -30 dB or better. Isolation between the two monopole elements was improved from about -10 dB (without decoupling treatment) to better than -30 dB with the ICE/magnetic wall decoupling method. B1 maps and MR images of the phantom were acquired and SNR maps were measured and calculated to evaluate the performance of the ICE/magnetic wall decoupling method. Compared with the monopole elements without decoupling methods, the ICE-decoupled array demonstrated more independent image profiles from each element and had a higher SNR in the peripheral area of the imaging subject. The experimental and simulation results indicate that the ICE/magnetic wall decoupling technique might be a promising solution to reducing the EM coupling of monopole arrays for UHF MRI.

An 8-channel planar phased array was proposed based on the common-mode differential-mode (CMDM) structure for ultrahigh field MRI. The parallel imaging performance of the 8-channel CMDM planar array was numerically investigated based on electromagnetic simulations and Cartesian sensitivity encoding (SENSE) reconstruction. The signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of multichannel images combined using root-sum-of-squares (rSoS) and covariance weighted root-sum-of-squares (Cov-rSoS) at various reduction factors were compared between 8-channel CMDM array and 4-channel CM and DM array. The results of the study indicated the 8-channel CMDM array excelled the 4-channel CM and DM in SNR. The g-factor maps and artifact power were calculated to evaluate parallel imaging performance of the proposed 8-channel CMDM array. The artifact power of 8-channel CMDM array was reduced dramatically compared with the 4-channel CM and DM arrays demonstrating the parallel imaging feasibility of the CMDM array.

In this work, we propose and investigate a volume coil array design method using different types of birdcage coils for MR imaging. Unlike the conventional radiofrequency (RF) coil arrays of which the array elements are surface coils, the proposed volume coil array consists of a set of independent volume coils including a conventional birdcage coil, a transverse birdcage coil, and a helix birdcage coil. The magnetic fluxes of these three birdcage coils are intrinsically cancelled, yielding a highly decoupled volume coil array. In contrast to conventional non-array type volume coils, the volume coil array would be beneficial in improving MR signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and also gain the capability of implementing parallel imaging. The volume coil array is evaluated at the ultrahigh field of 7T using FDTD numerical simulations, and the g-factor map at different acceleration rates was also calculated to investigate its parallel imaging performance.

Parallel transmission or excitation has been suggested to perform multi-dimensional spatial selective excitation to shorten the pulse width using a coil array and the sensitivity information. The mutual coupling between array elements has been a critical technical issue in RF array designs, which can cause artifacts on the excitation profile, leading to degraded excitation performance and image quality. In this work, a precompensation method is proposed to address the mutual coupling effect in parallel transmission by introducing the mutual coupling coefficient matrix into the RF pulses design procedure of the parallel transmission. 90° RF pulses have been designed using both the original transmit SENSE method and the proposed precompensation method for RF arrays with non-negligible mutual coupling, and their excitation profiles are generated by simulating the Bloch equation. The results show that the mutual coupling effect can be effectively compensated by using the proposed method, yielding enhanced tolerance to insufficient mutual decoupling of RF arrays in parallel excitation, ultimately, providing improved performance and accuracy of parallel excitation.

Fetal MRI on 1.5T clinical scanner has been increasingly becoming a powerful imaging tool for studying fetal brain abnormalities in vivo. Due to limited availability of dedicated fetal phased arrays, commercial torso or cardiac phased arrays are routinely used for fetal scans, which are unable to provide optimized SNR and parallel imaging performance with a small number coil elements, and insufficient coverage and filling factor. This poses a demand for the investigation and development of dedicated and efficient radiofrequency (RF) hardware to improve fetal imaging. In this work, an investigational approach to simulate the performance of multichannel flexible phased arrays is proposed to find a better solution to fetal MR imaging. A 32 channel fetal array is presented to increase coil sensitivity, coverage and parallel imaging performance. The electromagnetic field distribution of each element of the fetal array is numerically simulated by using finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. The array performance, including B(1) coverage, parallel reconstructed images and artifact power, is then theoretically calculated and compared with the torso array. Study results show that the proposed array is capable of increasing B(1) field strength as well as sensitivity homogeneity in the entire area of uterus. This would ensure high quality imaging regardless of the location of the fetus in the uterus. In addition, the paralleling imaging performance of the proposed fetal array is validated by using artifact power comparison with torso array. These results demonstrate the feasibility of the 32 channel flexible array for fetal MR imaging at 1.5T.
