The degree of preservation and the extractability of organic molecules in both archaeological and paleontological skeletal material has been the objective of many studies during the last decades and have shown extremely promising and interesting results (Schweitzer et al., 1997, 2007; Poulakakis et al., 2002; Schmidt-Schultz & Schultz, 2004; Dotsika et al., 2011). Studies on such molecules via various protocols of extraction as well as isotopic and spectroscopic analyses (Stathopoulou et al., 2008; Dotsika et al., 2011; Kontopoulos et al., 2019) have led to important information concerning evolutionary, environmental and diagenetic issues. Collagen is one of the most abundant proteins in skeletal material and its preservation in fossil material may indicate the preservation of other extremely important biomolecules such as DNA (Turner-Walker et al., 2008). This paper aims to present results concerning the evaluation of organic preservation as well as the extraction and quantification of collagen in samples from the Quaternary locations of Tilos and Dispilio (Greece) and Aghia Napa (Cyprus). Infrared Spectroscopy (ATR and NIR) was applied to all samples, prior to extraction in means of collagen prescreening and following extraction (where successful), to study the exact composition of the extracts and examine the correlation between collagen preservation and the samples' diagenetic profile (Stathopoulou et al., 2008; Kuczumow et al., 2010; Cleland et al., 2015; Stathopoulou et al., 2019). The extraction of collagen was attempted via modifications of the Longin (1971) method and specifically those of Maspero et al. (2011), Semal and Orban (1995) and Ambrose (1990). According to our results, only the Ambrose method led to successful collagen extraction and specifically only in the Dispilio samples. The collagen yield values for this material varied significantly (0,3–6,1% w/w) and seemed to strongly correlate to the different contexts found within the archaeological site. The IR analysis of the extracted Dispilio collagen indicated the presence of impurities such as carbonates and subsequently raised questions relating to the efficacy of the extraction method. Issues concerning geochemical and diagenetic parameters within the strata of the waterlogged site of Dispilio that could be connected to the different collagen yield as well as the methodological problems that emerged during the attempted extraction in all samples are discussed as well as the applicability of these methods on samples with reduced organic content. In the framework of the NWO project "What went into the melting pot? Land-use, agriculture, and craft production as indicators for the contributions of Greek migrants and local inhabitants to the so-called Greek colonization in Italy (ca. 850–550 BC)", science-based methods are employed to analyze and compare the organization of subsistence strategies in the Greek motherland and in the indigenous and colonial milieus of Italy (Crielaard et al. 2020). As a part of the subproject 'Flora & Fauna', which focuses on farming practices, subsistence strategies and surplus production, Iron Age material from the settlement of Krania in the Pieria region of Greece was analyzed. The site was excavated in 2001 and revealed occupation phases from the 3rd millennium BC to the Hellenistic period. The amount of ceramics recovered demonstrates the importance of trade with the rest of Greece, in particular Corinth, providing evidence for long-standing contacts and networks. Two pit structures contained a high concentration of material, notably charcoal and ceramics dating to the 9th-8th centuries BC. This material constitutes an interesting case study in itself but also as a regional comparandum with other Greek assemblages. Recent interest in modern climate change has stimulated extensive scientific study into past societal responses to climate variability. However, examining climate change and society as a historical narrative drawing upon politics, economics, and settlement patterns does not provide a direct link between climate and society. Given that most inhabitants of the premodern world engaged in agriculture and/or pastoralism, examining chronological correlations between climate and foodways, not as a historical narrative but as a longterm socioenvironmental process, has the potential to identify direct societal adaptations to a changing environment. From South Greece there is evidence for drier conditions at the end of the Late Bronze Age. Is the disappearance of writing, art, and many known settlements at the end of the Bronze Age an example of collapse in the face of inability to adapt to climate change? This is a difficult question to answer given the coarse resolution of many of our archaeological and climatic datasets. Settlement faunal records suggest that food production systems became increasingly homogenous in Late Bronze Age Greece, potentially due to an elite control over various production systems that promoted intensification of certain products. However, in the first millennium B.C.E., animal husbandry, specifically, and food production systems, more broadly, became more heterogenous, and a proportional increase in goats in areas with less rainfall was likely an adaptive response to the drier climate. Human-environmental interaction studies typically focus on large-scale landscape modifications of vegetation or soils and rarely address smaller-scale human alterations to site settings. This approach is based on a broad concept of environment as "set" having spatially dispersed and regionally defined attributes, as opposed to something that is mutable at the scale of individual groups of humans living at a specific location. This paper examines how two prehistoric groups, the Final Neolithic to Early Bronze Age 2 occupants on the island of Kos, Greece and the Late Formative Period occupants in the Upper Basin, northern Arizona, selected and modified habitation locations involving exposed bedrock. Although chronologically separated by thousands of years and occupying different continents, these two groups share similarities in population size, socio-political complexity, and environmental challenges. In facing these challenges, both groups apply practical, but different, approaches that utilized one of the most prevalent globally available resources -- limestone bedrock. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Balkan Peninsula lies on a key geographical location between Africa and Eurasia. The southern part of the Balkan Peninsula, referred to as the Aegean region, was a passageway for faunal migrations throughout the Pleistocene. Recent advances in the Lower Palaeolithic archaeology of Greece and in the research of the submerged landscapes of the Aegean region prompt a reconsideration of the biogeographical role of this area in Middle Pleistocene hominin settlement and expansion. In this paper, we articulate and elaborate on a working hypothesis, namely that the Aegean region was not a barrier during the Middle Pleistocene but instead it offered attractive lands for occupation and viable pathways for dispersal. Several methodological challenges emerge associated with the dynamic nature of the Aegean context. We propose an interdisciplinary approach to address the challenges. Using available archaeological and palaeogeographical evidence within a GIS-based framework, we seek to explore the 'hominin factor' in relation to the changing Aegean landscapes and geographical affordances. Shifting away from the 'terrestrial Eurocentric' point of view in the discussion of the patterns of early colonisation of Europe and the dispersal routes followed by hominins, we propose a revised understanding of early European settlement and its eastern gateways. Late Neolithic/Early Eneolithic Vinča culture is marked by permanent, long-living settlements, increased production of different craft goods and early metallurgical activities. Economic activities were rich and diverse, and included not only strictly subsistence related ones, but also production of luxurious, prestige, "special" objects, such as figurines, personal ornaments, and many more. Furthermore, some studies also suggest that we may note the beginning of craft specialisation in the widest sense within the Vinča culture. On a regional scale, differences in economic activities may be observed among different settlements and also in presence/absence of some artefact types. This may reflect a certain level of functional differentiation and possibly specialisation between different settlements, as noted, for example, among the Neolithic communities in Greece. In this paper, we will focus on the analyses of everyday lithic and osseous tools, in order to examine the differences in everyday activities, raw material management and craft production among different settlements. Lithic artifacts were still in use in Bronze Age Europe, in spite of the emergence of a new technology, namely metallurgy, during this period. In fact, stone technology continued to be used everywhere until at least the end of the Early Bronze Age, and even until the end of the Late Bronze Age in specific areas. This is especially true for Greece where lithic raw material and/or tool networks were still operating during the whole Bronze Age. During the Middle Bronze Age in mainland Greece, obsidian and high-quality chert were still widely used, especially in settlements. This raises the question of the necessity of the use of obsidian instead of a stronger or more versatile material (chert or metal). Why was volcanic glass, which required considerable investment in terms of know-how and long-distance transportation, still used in spite of the technological context (where metallurgy was already developed)? The purpose of this paper is to contribute to this debate through the use-wear analysis of obsidian tools. Artifacts from settlement levels of the Middle Helladic site of Kirrha (Phocis, Greece) have been examined. In this domestic-use context, bronze and chert were also found. The main results of this study show an exclusive form and use of obsidian: bladelets were used for cutting soft and siliceous plant matter, with the exception of Graminae harvesting activity. These results point to the specialization of the lithic industry in terms of raw materials, where sharp obsidian artefacts were employed for cutting of soft and flexible materials, depending on the relative brittleness of the rock, at least at Kirrha. Thus, among the numerous propositions concerning continued obsidian circulation during the entire Bronze Age, a functional use (at least) could be proven, if this observation is also made elsewhere in Greece. Abstract The technological systems and subsistence strategies of Middle Pleistocene hominins in South-East Europe are insufficiently understood due to the scarcity of well-preserved, excavated assemblages. In this paper, we present first results from the study of the lithic and bone artifacts unearthed at the Lower Palaeolithic site Marathousa 1 (MAR-1), Megalopolis, Greece. The context of the site represents a depositional environment close to a lakeshore, where rapid burial in a very fine-grained matrix ensured extraordinary conditions for preservation. Lithic artifacts occur in spatial and stratigraphic association with remains of the elephant Palaeoloxodon antiquus as well as other mammals. Bones, including those of elephants, show clear anthropogenic flaking scars, cut-marks and fracture patterns indicating deliberate breakage and modification by early humans. The MAR-1 lithic assemblage is composed of small-sized debitage, retouched tools, a few small and exhausted cores, as well as a large number of debris and retouch products, such as chips and resharpening flakes. Currently, there are no indications of Acheulean bifacial debitage, large cutting tools are missing, and a key aspect of the material refers to its 'microlithic' character. The scarcity of cores and primary flakes indicates a fragmented reduction sequence and complex discard patterns that require further investigation. On the basis of the on-going analysis of lithic material from three field seasons, we discuss aspects of assemblage composition and the role of raw material types, the main technological and typological traits of the industry, as well as the potential contribution of the MAR-1 assemblage in broader discussions about Middle Pleistocene lithic techno-complexes and subsistence strategies in Eurasia. Finally, we briefly present a small sample of bone artifacts, which suggest that hominin exploitation of the animal carcasses was not restricted to marrow extraction and bone processing for nutritional needs, but included also the knapping of bones, potentially with the aim of using the knapped products as tools. The MAR-1 archaeological record compares well with other important Eurasian sites yielding 'small tool assemblages', such as Ficoncella, La Polledrara, Bilzingsleben, Schöningen and Vértesszőlős, some of which, like MAR-1, have provided evidence of elephant or other mega-fauna exploitation. Abstract Post-infrared infrared stimulated luminescence (pIRIR) measurements are reported for multiple aliquots of potassium-rich feldspar grains from sedimentary deposits at Marathousa 1 and Choremi Mine in the Megalopolis Basin in southern Greece. Ages were obtained for 9 samples from the deposits that over- and underlie as well as include the archaeological and palaeontological deposits at Marathousa 1. These sediments are sandwiched between lignite seams II and III and thought to represent sediment deposition during a single glacial period. A single age was obtained for a sample from Choremi mine. The equivalent dose estimates are based on a newly developed method presented elsewhere, and environmental dose rate determinations followed standard procedures. A specific focus of this paper is the determination of a representative estimate of time-averaged palaeo-water content of the organic and sand-rich deposits and the impact of porosity and compaction on these estimates. Ages are presented using two water content scenarios. These final ages have relatively large uncertainties, making it difficult to accurately assign deposition to a single oxygen isotope stage (OIS). Taking uncertainty into account, sediment deposition at Marathousa 1 occur sometime during OIS 12 and 11 and at Choremi mine during MIS 8. When combined with other proxy information, these results support the interpretation that the peat deposits (represented by lignite seams II and III) were deposited during warm interglacial periods, and that the intervening clastic materials were deposited during glacial periods. In this case, the ages are best interpreted as supporting deposition of sediments during MIS12. This is consistent with one of the proposed age models, but younger than the other. Abstract The PaGE Project survey of the Megalopolis Basin (Arcadia, Greece), conducted in 2012–2013 over a period of two field seasons, was an intensive, target-oriented surface survey of Pleistocene sediments. Implementing a modified version of field methods applied in our survey of cave systems and Pleistocene cave sediments, the main goal of this systematic research focused on the identification of intact stratified remains from either stratigraphic sections or on remnants of exposed ancient surfaces. The project area consisted of the active open-cast lignite mine of Megalopolis, where access to recently exposed sections were abundant, and of the alluvial fans in the surrounding uplands, where hominins exploited the commanding views of the ancient lake. This paper presents the survey results and applied field methods for conducting archaeological research within the remnants of an Early to Middle Pleistocene ancient lake system. The project succeeded in identifying at least five surface and stratified sites, the latter including the Lower Paleolithic remains of Marathousa-1. This site is currently under investigation, but has already yielded the oldest chronometrically dated archaeological remains in Greece. Therefore, PaGE has not only managed to place mainland Greece on the Lower Paleolithic map of Europe, but has also successfully tested a methodological corpus for survey research targeting the earliest phases of the Paleolithic period in a Mediterranean landscape. Abstract Resinous and tarry materials have been valuable commodities since prehistory as their widespread use for numerous purposes indicates, but remain largely neglected by archaeological research, in part due to their poor preservation and the need for chemical analyses to identify them. This paper explores the use of these plant exudates in northern Greece and the Balkans during the Early and Middle Holocene with the aim of documenting the production and use of tarry materials and the exploitation of woodland resources. To this end tarry material found on pottery from 10 neolithic settlements located in North Greece, Bulgaria and Serbia, spanning the Early to Late Neolithic periods (7th to 5th millennia BC), were analysed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and identified using the biomarker approach. Data from analysis of wood charcoal found at Neolithic sites together with the pollen record have also been considered in order to assess the availability of raw materials to local populations. The results of biomolecular analysis show that birch-bark tar was almost exclusively used by Neolithic communities located in the Balkan hinterland, while a more complex picture arises for the northern Aegean area. Here, in addition to the predominant birch-bark tar, pine resin and pitch have also been identified as well as beeswax. The pollen and anthracological record suggest that birch existed in northern Greece and the Balkans hinterland during the Early Holocene, but must have been restricted to the uplands. Procurement of raw material may have taken place, therefore, at some distances from the settlements, involving the movement of people and raw materials or final products within the wider region. Chemical analysis provides evidence for variability in the production of tarry materials between settlements in northern Greece, while in the Balkan interior tar-making appears to have followed a more standardised recipe. Abstract The emergence of agriculture in Greece denotes the start of the Neolithic in Europe, however, little is known about dietary practices in the region. Archaeobotanical and zooarchaeological remains indicate reliance on cereals and pulses, together with meat-based subsistence practices, including sheep/goat and pig husbandry. Preliminary investigations of dietary practices obtained through lipid residue analysis of pottery of a small number of sites in the region have confirmed primarily carcass products were processed. The weak evidence for dairy products contrasts with finding of dairy-based subsistence strategies in NW Anatolia, which is surprising given its close proximity. This paper aims to build on this earlier work to provide a more detailed model for the dietary changes throughout the region, both chronologically and spatially. To achieve this >900 potsherds from 11 sites spanning the Early (EN) to Late Neolithic (LN) periods from the north of Greece have been investigated using the lipid biomarker approach involving high temperature-gas chromatography (HT-GC), GC-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and GC-combustion-isotope ratio MS (GC-C-IRMS) to determine the nature and origins of organic residues preserved in the fabric of pottery vessels. Lipid residue analysis of pottery vessels revealed ruminant and non-ruminant carcass fats comprise the majority of animal fat types identified, reflecting the high abundance of sheep/goat and pig in faunal assemblages. The emergence of dairying in northern Greece can now be dated to the site of EN/Middle Neolithic (MN) Ritini (5900/5700 - 5500 cal. B.C.E.), however, the frequency of dairy fat residues was low, overall, indicating that dairying was not intensively practised. The δ13C values of the fatty acids extracted from potsherds reflect a predominately C 3 diet, however, in the EN and MN there is greater variation with some lipids exhibiting enriched δ13C values indicating a significant abundance of C 4 plants in the ecosystem(s) covered by the study. Significantly, plant-derived n- alkanes (C 22 to C 34) detected in pottery vessels provide the first evidence for plant processing identified in lipid residues from ceramic vessels in Neolithic northern Greece, supporting the abundant archaeobotanical evidence for the processing of cereals and pulses. Abstract Investigation of the incipience of agriculture in Greece employing archaeobotanical remains is a challenging field of inquiry, aiming at gaining insights into the complex socio-economic transformations that gradually shaped the way of Neolithic life. Yet, primary archaeobotanical evidence dating to the 7th and early 6th millennium BCE from Greece still remains scarce and, to a certain degree, incomplete as regards the kind of information it can provide. This paper forms anew an approach to explore aspects of early agricultural practices in Greece on the basis of plant macroremains. The aim is to set the Mesolithic background against which the Early Neolithic archaeobotanical dataset is then fully reviewed. In doing so we first introduce new Mesolithic and early Neolithic data (Theopetra in Thessaly, and Revenia and Paliambela in Macedonia) and we then provide a critical overview of all other sites in Greece dated to these periods, to ultimately set new 'seeds' for future research on the incipience of agriculture in the area. Abstract: This paper presents sedimentological, geochemical, and biological data from Lake Prespa (Albania/Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia/Greece). The 320 cm core sequence (Co1215) covers the last 17 ka calBP and reveals significant change in climate and environmental conditions on a local and regional scale. The sediment record suggests typical stadial conditions from 17.1 to 15.7 ka calBP, documented through low lake productivity, well-mixed conditions, and cold-resistant steppe catchment vegetation. Warming is indicated from 15.7 ka calBP with slightly increased in-lake productivity, gradual expansion of trees, and decreasing erosion through disappearance of local ice caps. Between 14.5 and 11.5 ka calBP relatively stable hydrological conditions are documented. The maximum in tree taxa percentages during the Bølling/Allerød interstadial (14.5–13.2 ka calBP) indicates increased temperatures and moisture availability, whereas the increase of cold-resistant open steppe vegetation taxa percentages during the Younger Dryas (13.2–11.5 ka calBP) is coupled with distinct colder and drier conditions. The Holocene sequence from 11.5 ka calBP indicates ice-free winters, stratification of the water column, a relatively high lake trophic level and dense vegetation cover over the catchment. A strong climate related impact on the limnology and physical parameters in Lake Prespa is documented around 8.2 ka through a significant decrease in productivity, enhanced mixing, strong decomposition and soil erosion, and a coeval expansion of herbs implying cool and dry climate conditions. Intensive human activity in the catchment is indicated from around 1.9 ka calBP. This multiproxy approach improves our understanding of short- and long-term climate fluctuations in this area and their impact on catchment dynamics, limnology, hydrology, and vegetation. Abstract: Hydro-acoustic surveys and coring campaigns at Lake Prespa were carried out between 2007 and 2009. This paper presents hydro-acoustic profiles and provide lithological and chronostratigraphical information from three up to 15.75 m long sediment sequences from the Macedonian side of the lake. The sediment sequences comprise glacial and interglacial sediments likely deposited from the end of Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 5 to present day. The information implies a distinct change of sedimentation patterns at the Pleistocene/Holocene transition and the establishment of a relatively strong Holocene current system and deposition of channel-related contourite drift in Lake Prespa. Potential causes for the establishment of this current during the Holocene include significant lake level change, reduced winter ice cover, and/or higher aeolian activity. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: This paper aims to reveal the depositional environment of Istron and its sedimentological response to Holocene climatic events. The results of a multi-disciplinary geoarchaeological research undertaken in the coastal area of Istron, northeastern Crete, provided information on the depositional environment and the palaeoenvironmental evolution of the area during the Holocene. Detailed fieldwork and sampling by drilling cores in the coastal area provided samples for further analytical studies. The identification of the stratigraphy and the distinction of sedimentological units provided evidence for landscape evolution of the coastal area. Changes of sedimentation rates determined by optical dating and sedimentological analysis were also correlated with Holocene climatic phases. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: In many parts of the Mediterranean Basin, resource intensification occurred across the Middle to Upper Paleolithic transition, and again before the beginning of the Mesolithic. Central to understanding resource intensification is distinguishing human demographic pressures from environmental factors. This paper examines the intensification of vertebrate resources at Klissoura Cave 1 in the Peloponnese, Greece, from marine oxygen isotope stage (MIS) 5a until the early Holocene (from about 80,000 to 10,000 years ago) against the backdrop of changing environments. Occasional fluctuations in large game resources, as well as changing proportions of certain small game (e.g. great bustard) correlate to environmental shifts in the eastern Mediterranean during the Late Pleistocene. Prey choice models are used to understand human demographic pressures and resource intensification. Small game animals are ranked according to these models, with slow-moving species (e.g. tortoises) classified as higher-ranking and fast-moving species (e.g. hares and birds) categorized as low-ranking. Two major shifts are apparent in the sequence. The first is an overall increase in the use of small game animals in the Upper Paleolithic and later diets as compared to ungulate prey. The second is a decrease in higher-ranked small game and a corresponding increase in low-ranked small game animals. These trends are evident using either number of identified specimen (NISP) counts or proxy measures of prey biomass. An application of diversity indices indicates that there is no temporal trend in prey evenness, though fluctuations in evenness values have different meanings for ungulate and small-bodied prey. An increase in evenness of ungulate species typically correlates with climatic amelioration. Increasing evenness values for small game animals, however, are related to environmental factors in some instances, and changes in human exploitation patterns in other cases. Abstract: This paper briefly describes some recently discovered remains of the straight-tusked elephant, Elephas antiquus, from Greece. Material of this extinct proboscidean was found in four localities in Northern Greece: Kaloneri and Sotiras in Western Macedonia, Xerias in Eastern Macedonia, and Larissa in Thessaly. In addition, published elephant remains from Ambelia, Petres and Perdikas, also from Northern Greece, are reinterpreted and also attributed to E. antiquus. Of all these, the Kaloneri elephant shows an interesting paleopathology: it was disabled by a broken right tusk. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: This paper presents the Database of historical Liquefaction Occurrences in the broader Aegean region (DALO). The database contains historical information regarding liquefaction manifestations, mainly in Greece and the broader Aegean region, that were collected during the last decade. In particular, descriptions of liquefaction manifestations triggered by 90 earthquakes since 1509 were collected and included into a database that was constructed using Ms-Access software. The database consists of six tables that are used for adding information into the database, while six forms have been created in order to present the dataset in a more suitable way. The outcome of this study is that 99% of liquefaction sites are located 0–100 m from a water body, and 94% consist of Holocene sediments and 6% of artificial fill. In addition, in order to present the data under a GIS environment, information in the database was exported into Google Earth kmz format. A web interface of DALO was developed and made available at the web site http://users.auth.gr/∼gpapatha/dalo.htm where three maps are presented regarding historical liquefaction occurrences. Photos and figures of the ground or structural failures have been uploaded as well, mainly for the events that occurred after 1950. This GIS-based dataset can be helpful, especially to decision makers and urban planners, as it can be used as a screening guide of liquefaction hazard for avoiding in advance liquefaction prone areas. Abstract: This paper presents evidence of multiple tsunami impact on the Bay of Palairos-Pogonia, NW Greece, during the Holocene based on detailed geo-scientific studies. Altogether, 41 vibracores were drilled to detect high-energy influence in the stratigraphical record. Layers of coarse-grained allochthonous marine deposits were found intersecting autochthonous fine-grained back beach sediments in the Palairos coastal plain, on top of beach or marly bedrock units at Pogonia beach and along the Pogonia cliff section. High-energy deposits are associated with specific sedimentary structures such as fining upward sequences, rip up-clasts, basal erosional contact, bi- to multimodal grain size distribution, lamination, and co-existence of both well rounded and angular, sharply edged components, all of them typical of tsunami impact. Macro- and microfaunal analyses revealed tsunami-related input of numerous ex situ marine species and mostly angular shell debris into quiescent fresh- to brackish water environments by high-energy and long-distance transport. Geophysical methods helped to find subsurface structures and to seize the lateral extent of tsunami layers. Ca–Fe ratios derived from XRF measurements were used to trace tsunami influence inland. Most important is the widespread spatial distribution of the tsunamites with a lateral extent between 70m at the Pogonia cliff section, 200m at Pogonia beach, and 1km in the central Palairos plain, and overall tendencies of fining and thinning towards inland. Highest elevations of tsunamites were found around Pogonia village at ca. 7.5ma.s.l. Vibracore data give evidence that the overall coastal evolution has been strongly affected, locally even controlled by multiple high-energy impact. A conspicuous geoarchaeological tsunamite, up to 1.5m thick, was found at Pogonia cliff consisting of mixed marine (sand, pebbles, bio-erosively altered stones, shell debris, foraminifers) and terrigenous material (abundant ceramic fragments, bones, building material). It is directly associated with the submerged remains of an ancient mole which was destroyed and its building material partly dislocated by the same event. Dating of tsunamites was accomplished by archaeological age determination of diagnostic sherds and by radiocarbon and luminescence dating techniques. Strong tsunami events were dated to the beginning of the 6th, the mid-5th, the 4th/3rd and the late 2nd millennia BC as well as to the 4th/3rd century BC. On a regional scale, the recurrence interval for large events is ca. 500–1000 years. At least twice during the late Holocene, the Palairos coastal plain was flooded quasi-contemporaneously from both the northern and southern side. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: This paper presents, for the first time, detailed geomorphological, sedimentological, geoarchaeological, geophysical and geochemical evidence of a strong tsunami impact on the Bay of Aghios Nikolaos and its environs (NW Greece) during Classical–Hellenistic times. Tsunamigenically dislocated beachrock slabs found on top of the Santa Maura beach ridge complex are closely interrelated to adjacent coarse-grained washover fan deposits encountered in vibracores and detected by earth resistivity measurements. Based on detailed topographic surveys and geomorphometric investigations, it was possible to localize areas of high intensity overflow. Underwater studies revealed that the central and northern parts of the former Plaka beach ridge were completely destroyed by tsunami impact. Loose littoral deposits were flushed into the Bay of Aghios Nikolaos and mega blocks of the underlying beachrock structure were dislocated landwards. Tsunami landfall occurred all along the eastern and northern shores of the bay where deposits, partly weathered and associated to archaeological findings, were found. Runup was estimated to minimum values between 2–3m and 4–6m a.s.l. Crosschecking the results of radiocarbon analyses with archaeological ages from five sites allowed to date the strong tsunami event to the time period between 395calBC and 247calBC. Due to the funnel-like contour of the coastline, the area is extremely sensitive to tsunami events of mid to high magnitude and high frequency. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
