Solitary fibrous tumors are rare mesenchymal neoplasms that can range from slow-growing to aggressive tumors. This report presents a unique case of a young male patient with a solitary fibrous tumor involving the seminal vesicle, a rare location, and reinforces incidental discovery of these tumors on imaging and physical exams. Detection of these tumors is imperative to identify and treat malignancy. In our case, a 39-year-old previously healthy Asian male presents to the emergency department as a trauma admission post bicycle crash and is incidentally found to have a pelvic mass on computed tomography imaging of the pelvis. The patient underwent trans-anal biopsy which showed spindle epithelioid cells positive for CD34 and STAT6 markers, with a morphological and immunohistochemical profile consistent with a solitary fibrous tumor. The patient underwent surgery with a robotic-assisted laparoscopic pelvic mass resection and now follows up annually with imaging for observation.

Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) arising from adult mesenchymal stem cells is an uncommon vascular tumor of pelvic cavity. While initially thought to be confined to the pleura, pericardium, or peritoneum, recent studies have revealed that SFTs can develop in different areas of the body. Typically, SFTs grow slowly and may not present noticeable symptoms. In this 2 case study, we describe the clinical situation of a 46-year-old female patient and 68 years old male patient who complained of persistent pelvic pain and urinary symptoms respectively. Imaging tests revealed solitary fibrous tumor in the pelvic cavity which was confirmed on histopathology, an unusual location for this type of tumor. This case reports focusses on importance of early recognition and treatment in dealing with this rare tumor.

In the thoracic region, it primarily appears in the pleura and rarely in the intrapulmonary. SFT typically presents as well-defined, oval or round, hyperdense masses. We report male 66-year-old complaint of cough, intermittent shortness of breath, and a lump in the lower right chest which has gradually increased in size. From chest MSCT results, there were cavitating lesions with solid and cystic components. FNAB and core biopsy examinations were performed. To establish a definitive diagnosis, an open biopsy followed by immunohistochemical analysis was conducted, confirming the presence of a solitary fibrous tumor (SFT).

We present a case report of a 47-year-old male patient with an intracranial SFT who underwent subtotal resection followed by adjuvant radiotherapy. The patient initially presented with chronic left temporal headache and was diagnosed with an intra-axial double-component mass in the left temporoparietal lobe. Histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of SFT, and immunohistochemical staining demonstrated positivity for CD34, Bcl-2, and STAT6. Following the incomplete resection, the patient received adjuvant radiotherapy using volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) technique. During radiotherapy, the patient experienced a spontaneous encephalocele rupture but recovered without complications. One year postradiotherapy, the patient showed no recurrence of symptoms or radiological evidence of tumor recurrence. This case highlights the challenges in the diagnosis and management of CNS SFTs and suggests that subtotal resection followed by adjuvant radiotherapy may be an effective treatment approach in achieving favorable outcomes for these rare neoplasms.

Solitary fibrous tumors are rare mesenchymal tumors originally described in the pleura that infrequently metastasize. We present a 71-year-old male complaining of hemoptysis and a mass with the characteristic appearance of a hemangioma in the floor of the mouth. The mass had nonspecific imaging features on CT and MRI. After unsuccessful fine needle aspiration, surgical excision and biopsy with histological analysis revealed a solitary fibrous tumor, high risk variant. CT Imaging and lymph node biopsy showed gross total resection and no metastatic adenopathy. Given the high risk for malignancy, the patient received adjuvant radiation without subsequent clinical or imaging signs of recurrence. This case report demonstrates the presentation of this rare entity that can often be confused with other tumors in this region, given its nonspecific clinical and imaging findings.

Intra-abdominal solitary fibrous tumor (SFT), also known as hemangiopericytoma, is rare, especially for those with a mesenteric location, and only a few cases have been reported. Distinguishing a hemangiopericytoma from other intra-abdominal benign or malignant tumors can be difficult, as they have similar presentations on both computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. In the present study, the records for a 31-year-old Vietnamese woman who underwent abdominal surgery for greater omental tumor resection and received histopathological results revealing SFT are retrospectively reviewed. The case is discussed and similar reported cases are reviewed. Due to the aggressive behavior and high rate of postoperative recurrence associated with SFT, a thorough understanding of the radiologic and histopathological features of the disease is necessary to achieve an appropriate diagnosis and treatment.

Solitary fibrous tumor/hemangiopericytomas (SFT/HPC) are soft tissue tumors that can arising from the abomen, pleura, head and neck, or extremities. We report an unusual case of recurrent hemangiopericytoma in a 67-year-old female presenting with a painless and palpable mass within her right posterior neck. Eight years after initial resection of the mass, a follow-up MRI showed multiple enlarging calvarial lesions. A whole body FDG-PET/CT revealed not only hypermetabolic calvarial lesions but also numerous hypermetabolic axillary node and osseous metastases. Though the majority of these soft tissue tumors exhibit benign behavior and carry a favorable prognosis, patients with these slow growing tumors are at risk for local recurrence and distant metastases which demonstrate substantial FDG avidity. Additional studies are needed to clarify the role of whole body FDG-PET/CT in the surveillance of SFT/HPC to detect recurrent or metastatic lesions.

Solitary fibrous tumor is neoplasm of mesenchymal origin commonly involving visceral pleura however we are presenting an unusual case with involvement of urinary bladder. It is generally indolent in nature therefore proper diagnosis is required for complete characterization to avoid unnecessary extensive surgical resection. Our patient was a 64-year-old female who presented with lower abdominal fullness with change in her bowel movement pattern. On imaging partially necrotic mass with heterogenous enhancement was found which was later biopsied and resected with clean surgical margin. Solitary fibrous tumor is overall a benign tumor with satisfactory outcome. Physicians should keep it in a differential of pelvic masses and with the risk recurrence, 6 monthly follow up imaging are usually required after resection.

Fibrous Solitary Tumors are infrequent neoplasms originating from mesenchymal tissues, most commonly arising from the visceral pleura and frequently exhibiting a benign behavior. Extra-pleural localization is unusual and the site of origin of these tumors from the parenchyma of the parotid gland is considered extremely rare. We report the case of a 66-years old woman with non-painful slow-growing left latero-cervical mass, who underwent a gadolinium-enhanced Magnetic Resonance Imaging showing a mass originating from the deep lobe of the parotid gland extending into the retro-pharyngeal space. After a total parotidectomy with tumor excision, a diagnosis of histologically proven fibrous solitary tumor of the parotid gland was made. Two years later, CT scan showed post-operative recurrence and further satellite localization in the neck, distant from the initial mass. We performed a literature review of the published similar cases, in order to clinicopathological and imaging features of this rare entity.

Fat-forming variant of solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a rare mesenchymal neoplasm. Here we report the case of a 33-year-old woman who developed pain and muscle weakness from the posterior aspect of the right hip to lower extremity. Imaging examinations revealed a mass with fatty components and hypervascular solid components filling the sacral spinal canal and sacral foramen. The sacral mass was resected and histological examination of the specimens revealed patternless proliferation of short spindle-shaped cells with staghorn blood vessels. A number of mature adipocyte-like cells were also observed. The tumor cells were positive for STAT6 and the nuclei of the adipocytes were also positive, which was diagnostic for fat-forming SFT.

Solitary fibrous tumor in the lumbar spine is a rare pathology with non-specific radiographic features, sometimes resulting in misdiagnosis. Our patient was a 41-year old female who presented with low back pain and bilateral leg pain. Initial MRI showed a lesion misdiagnosed for a sequestered disc at the mid L4-5 level, which was subsequently characterized appropriately and treated surgically, with resolution of symptoms. Pathologic diagnosis was most consistent with a solitary fibrous tumor due to STAT 6 and CD 34 reactivity. Long-term follow up is recommended in these patients to monitor tumor recurrence and evidence of metastasis.

Solitary fibrous tumors are rare mesenchymal neoplasms with highly recurrence rates after intratumor resection. We report 2 cases of solitary fibrous tumors treated with combination therapy with embolization and en bloc laminectomy using thread saw. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first such report. In the 2 cases, the hypervascular tumors were located in the spinal process and infiltrating the multifidus. Preoperative embolization was useful for decreasing intraoperative bleeding, and using thread saw was an ideal technique for deciding the cut surface height of the pedicle to achieve gross total resection.

Spinal solitary fibrous tumors are extremely rare neoplasms and of those, intradural extramedullary location is even rarer. A 64-year-old male presented to the emergency department with worsening right leg pain over 1 month. Whole spine magnetic resonance imaging revealed a well-circumscribed mass with low T1 and markedly low T2 signal intensity at the level of T1-2. Spine computed tomography showed no evidence of calcification or acute hemorrhage. Surgical removal was performed and the final diagnosis was intradural extramedullary solitary fibrous tumor.

We report a rare case of metastatic malignant solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) that presented with hypoglycemia because of insulin growth factor-2 production. Initial workup included computed tomography imaging that revealed a large, partially necrotic liver mass, a hypervascular pancreatic head lesion, and 2 renal lesions. Following hepatic resection, pancreatic head resection and nephrectomy, all these lesions demonstrated pathological findings that were consistent with SFT. The patient also had a history of an intracranial mass that had been previously resected and treated with gamma knife therapy at an outside institution, which was found to also be SFT. Six months after initial pancreatic head resection, the patient developed a new lesion involving the pancreatic tail that was found to represent recurrent metastatic SFT. This case emphasizes the highly aggressive nature of extrapleural SFT, while rare, and the role of imaging in follow-up for disease recurrence.
