The article focuses on how reading teachers can give urban middle school students academic vocabulary instruction that prepares them to be able to read sophisticated texts in high school. Particular focus is given to reading comprehension in language-minority (LM) students. The authors discuss curriculum development, English language arts (ELA) programs, and a research program that evaluated an academic language program in an urban middle school with linguistic and socioeconomic diversity. Several elements of the program are presented including using short, engaging texts, covering a text in depth, and giving students increased opportunities to discuss texts verbally. Other topics include the incorporation of activities and the use of writing in vocabulary instruction.
