Most advances in the remote sensing of floating marine plastic litter have been made using passive remote-sensing techniques in the visible (VIS) to short-wave-infrared (SWIR) parts of the electromagnetic spectrum based on the spectral absorption features of plastic surfaces. In this paper, we present developments of new and emerging remote-sensing technologies of marine plastic litter such as passive techniques: fluid lensing, multi-angle polarimetry, and thermal infrared sensing (TIS); and active techniques: light detection and ranging (LiDAR), multispectral imaging detection and active reflectance (MiDAR), and radio detection and ranging (RADAR). Our review of the detection capabilities and limitations of the different sensing technologies shows that each has their own weaknesses and strengths, and that there is not one single sensing technique that applies to all kinds of marine litter under every different condition in the aquatic environment. Rather, we should focus on the synergy between different technologies to detect marine plastic litter and potentially the use of proxies to estimate its presence. Therefore, in addition to further developing remote-sensing techniques, more research is needed in the composition of marine litter and the relationships between marine plastic litter and their proxies. Dedicated to synchronously acquiring large-area, high-precision, and multi-scale ocean wind and wave information, a novel concept of a spaceborne ocean microwave dual-function integrated sensor is proposed in this paper. It integrates the functions of a scatterometer and SAR by sharing a single phased-array antenna. An overview of the scientific requirements and motivations for the sensor are outlined firstly. In order to fulfill the observation requirements of both the functions, the constraints on the system parameters such as frequency, antenna size, and incidence angle are analyzed. Then, the selection principles of these parameters are discussed within the limitations of antenna area, bandwidth, available time, and cost. Additionally, the constraints on the time sequence of transmitting and receiving pulses are derived to ensure that there is no conflict when the two functions operate simultaneously. Subsequently, a method for jointly designing the pulse repetition frequency (PRF) of both the functions is introduced, along with zebra maps to verify its effectiveness. Ocean sound speed is important for underwater acoustic applications, such as communications, navigation and localization, where the assumption of uniformly distributed sound speed profiles (SSPs) is generally used and greatly degrades the performance of underwater acoustic systems. The acquisition of SSPs is necessary for the corrections of the sound ray propagation paths. However, the inversion of SSPs is challenging due to the intricate relations of interrelated physical ocean elements and suffers from the high costs of calculations and hardware deployments. This paper proposes a novel sound speed inversion method based on multi-source ocean remote sensing observations and machine learning, which adapts to large-scale sea regions. Firstly, the datasets of SSPs are generated utilizing the Argo thermohaline profiles and the empirical formulas of the sound speed. Then, the SSPs are analyzed utilizing the empirical orthogonal functions (EOFs) to reduce the dimensions of the feature space as well as the computational load. Considering the nonlinear regression relations of SSPs and the observed datasets, a general framework for sound speed inversion is formulated, which combines the designed machine learning models with the reduced-dimensional feature representations, multi-source ocean remote sensing observations and water temperature data. After being well trained, the proposed machine learning models realize the accurate inversion of the targeted ocean region by inputting the real-time ocean environmental data. Sea surface wind, waves, and currents are the three basic parameters that describe the dynamic process of sea surface, and they are coupled with each other. To more accurately describe large-scale ocean motion and extract the ocean dynamic parameters, we adopt the spaceborne Doppler measurement to estimate the radial Doppler velocity generated by the sea surface motion. Due to the presence of wind and waves, the Doppler spectrum will be formed, shifted and broadened. Pulse-pair phase interference is used to obtain the Doppler spectrum from the sea surface echo. We simulate the Doppler spectrum with different look geometry and ocean states in a spaceborne condition. In this paper, the Doppler centroid variations are estimated after reducing the platform Doppler velocity under different observation conditions. With the increase in wind speed, the measured Doppler shift increases, and the simulated Doppler centroid accuracy is estimated. In addition, the measurement error along the trace direction is at the maximum, and the error in the cross-track is the smallest. Mathematical algorithms relate satellite data of ocean color with the surface Chlorophyll-a concentration (Chl-a), a proxy of phytoplankton biomass. These mathematical tools work best when they are adapted to the unique bio-optical properties of a particular oceanic province. Ocean color algorithms should also consider that there are significant differences between datasets derived from different sensors. Common solutions are to provide different parameters for each sensor or use merged satellite data. In this paper, we use satellite data from the Copernicus merged product suite and in situ data from the southernmost part of the California Current System to test two widely used global algorithms, OCx and CI, and a regional algorithm, CalCOFI2. The OCx algorithm yielded the most favorable results. Consequently, we regionalized it and conducted further testing, leading to significant improvements, especially in eutrophic and oligotrophic waters. The database was then separated according to (a) dynamic boundaries in the area, (b) bio-optical properties, and (c) climatic conditions (El Niño/La Niña). Regional algorithms were obtained and tested for each partition. The Chl-a retrievals for each model were tested and compared. The best fit for the data was for the regional algorithms that considered the climatic conditions (El Niño/La Niña). These results will allow for the construction of consistent regionally adapted time series and, therefore, will demonstrate the importance of El Niño/La Niña events on the bio-optical properties of the area. Development of ocean measurement technologies can improve monitoring of the global Ocean Heat Content (OHC) and Heat Storage Rate (HSR) that serve as early-warning indices for climate-critical circulation processes such as the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation and provide real-time OHC assessments for tropical cyclone forecast models. This paper examines the potential of remotely measuring ocean temperature profiles using a simulated Brillouin lidar for calculating ocean HSR. A series of data analysis ('Nature') and Observational Systems Simulation Experiments (OSSEs) were carried out using 26 years (1992–2017) of daily mean temperature and salinity outputs from the ECCOv4r4 ocean circulation model. The focus of this study is to compare various OSSEs carried out to measure the HSR using a simulated Brillouin lidar against the HSR calculated from the ECCOv4r4 model results. Brillouin lidar simulations are used to predict the probability of detecting a return lidar signal under varying sampling strategies. Correlations were calculated for the difference between sampling strategies. These comparisons ignore the measurement errors inherent in a Brillouin lidar. Brillouin lidar technology and instruments are known to contain numerous, instrument-dependent errors and remain an engineering challenge. A significant decrease in the ability to measuring global ocean HSRs is a consequence of measuring ocean temperature from nadir-pointing instruments that can only take measurements along-track. Other sources of errors include the inability to fully profile ocean regions with deep mixed layers, such as the Southern Ocean and North Atlantic, and ocean regions with high light attenuation levels. The polarization crossfire (PCF) suite carried onboard the Chinese GaoFen-5B satellite is composed of a Particulate Observing Scanning Polarimeter (POSP) and a Directional Polarimetric Camera (DPC), which can provide multi-angle, multi-spectral, and polarization data. In this paper, the influence of polarization and the directionality of reflectance in open oceans on the inversion of chlorophyll a (Chla) concentrations are investigated, from 410 nm to 670 nm. First, we exploit a vector radiative transfer model to simulate the absolute and relative magnitudes of the water-leaving radiance signal (I) and the parallel polarization radiance (PPR) to the top-of-atmosphere (TOA) radiation field. The simulation results show that the PPR can enhance the relative contribution of the water-leaving signal, especially in sunglint observation geometry. The water-leaving signal for PPR exhibits significant directional and spectral variations relative to the observation geometries, and the maximum value of the water-leaving signal for PPR occurs in the backscattering direction. In addition, the sensitivity of the PPR to the Chla concentration is sufficient. The synthetic datasets are utilized to develop retrieval algorithms for the Chla concentrations based on the back-propagation neural network (BPNN). The inversion results show that the PCF strategy improves the accuracy of Chla retrieval, with an RMSE of 0.014 and an RRMSE of 6.57%. With the ongoing changes in global climate, ocean data play a crucial role in understanding the complex variations in the earth system. These variations pose significant challenges to human efforts in addressing the changes. As a data hub for the satellite geodetic technique, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) instill new vitality into ocean data collection due to their flexibility and mobility. At the same time, the dual-functional radar-communication (DFRC) system is considered a promising technology to empower ubiquitous communication and high-accuracy localization. In this paper, we explore a new fusion of UAV and DFRC to assist data acquisition in the ocean surveillance scenario. The floating buoys transmit uplink data transmission to the UAV with non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) and attempt to localize the target cooperatively. With the mobility of the UAV and power control at the buoys, the system throughput and the target localization performance can be improved simultaneously. To balance the communication and sensing performance, a two-objective optimization problem is formulated by jointly optimizing the UAV's location and buoy's transmit power to maximize the system throughput and minimize the attainable localization mean-square error. We propose a joint communication and radar-sensing many-objective optimization (CRMOP) algorithm to meliorate the communication and radar-sensing performance simultaneously. Simulation results demonstrate that compared with the baseline, the proposed algorithm achieves superior performance in balancing the system throughput and target localization. According to GPS radio occultation data from previous studies, the height of the planetary boundary layer (PBLH) is defined as the altitude at which the vertical gradient of refractivity N is at its local minimum, called the gradient approach. As with its density, the atmosphere's refractivity falls broadly exponentially with height. The spherically symmetric refractivity Nss(r) was established to account for the standard deviation of atmospheric refractivity with altitude. Ni is the residual from the fundamental vertical variations of refractivity, defined as Ni(r) = N(r) − Nss(r). In this study, the vertical gradient of N is replaced by the vertical gradient of Ni to optimize the gradient approach, called the local gradient approach. Using the US radiosonde and Constellation Observing System for Meteorology, Ionosphere, and Climate (COSMIC) radio occultations (ROs) data from 2007–2011, these two PBLH-determining approaches are evaluated. The PBLHs estimated by the gradient approach and the local gradient approach have RMSE values of 0.73 km and 0.65 km, respectively. The PBLH obtained by the local gradient approach is closer to the radiosonde-derived value. In this paper, the COSMIC-2 ROs data and the western Pacific typhoon best track data are collocated in time and space during 2020–2021, and the axisymmetric composite structural characteristics of the tropical cyclone (TC) PBLs are analyzed. The lowest vertical gradients of N and Ni of TCs correspond closely with the average PBLHs. We find that the mean PBLHs of tropical depressions (TD), tropical storms (TS), and typhoons (TY) all have their local maxima at a radial distance of 125 km with heights of 1.03 km, 1.12 km, and 1.36 km, respectively. After 375 km, 575 km, and 935 km of TD, TS, and TY radial distances, the mean PBLHs become stable and cease to vary. The mean PBLH undulations increase significantly with the increase in tropical cyclone intensity. Niwet is the residual from the fundamental vertical variations of wet refractivity, defined as Niwet(r) = Nwet(r) − Nsswet(r). Local minima of Niwet and Ni vertical gradients of TD, TS, and TY have comparable distributions and are concentrated between 0.5 km and 1 km. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the present paper, we investigate the sea surface height (SSH) anomalies caused by polar lows (PLs) crossing the central part of the Barents Sea and verify if the barotropic response is detectable in the shallow Arctic seas. Analysis of the SSH anomalies in response to the passage of two PLs is performed using satellite altimeter measurements and model simulations. The observed SSH anomalies contained an inverse barometer correction; therefore, they were presumably caused only by the action of surface wind stress in the PLs. The SSH anomalies along the satellite altimeter tracks had the shape of a trough, with the lowest surface height near the center of the PL. The observed anomalies were well distinguished within about one day after the PL passage, with the largest negative value of 0.6 m. The SSH anomalies are analyzed using a simplified model of the ocean barotropic response to the surface wind stress, derived from the hourly wind fields provided in the ERA5 reanalysis dataset. The model quantitatively reproduced the SSH anomalies along most satellite altimeter tracks crossing the PL trajectories. The model simulations revealed that the largest negative SSH anomalies were observed in areas where the PL translation velocity was low and its moving direction changed with the trajectory curvature radius, which was much smaller than the barotropic radius of deformation. The estimated quasi-geostrophic current velocities corresponding to the SSH anomalies in the wakes of the PLs reached 0.15 m/s, which were comparable to the current velocities observed in the Barents Sea. The harmonic constants of long-period tidal constituents are critical for simulating the tide process, obtaining theoretical datum sounding reduction, and conducting further ocean research. In this paper, the equidistant node orthogonal polynomial fitting (ENOPF) method is employed to fit the harmonic constants of the T/P satellite altimeter data and the gridded altimeter data from the Data Unification and Altimeter Combination System (DUACS) to obtain the full-field harmonic constants of the long-period tidal constituents (Sa and Ssa) in the Bohai Sea, Yellow Sea, and East China Sea (BYECS). To verify the validity of the ENOPF method, the long-period tidal harmonic constants of the ENOPF method, the Finite Element Solutions 2014 (FES2014) model, the Empirical Ocean Tide 20 (EOT20) model, and the DUACS data were compared with the observations of the X-TRACK products and the tide gauges. In addition, the root-mean-square errors (RMSEs), amplitude differences ( Δ H ), and phase-lag differences ( Δ G ) of the comparison results were calculated. According to the error analysis and the cotidal charts, the ENOPF method is better than the other three methods or models for comparing tide gauges (6.19 cm, 5.85 cm, 25.44°; 1.10 cm, 0.72 cm, 59.09°, respectively. The cotidal charts obtained by the ENOPF method are smoother and have better consistency with the actual track data. The results indicate that, due to the polynomial fitting method adopted in ENOPF method, which has the characteristics of improving the resolution infinitely, it is easier to obtain the harmonic constant of full field than with other models or methods. Motion planning based on the reinforcement learning algorithms of the autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) has shown great potential. Motion planning algorithms are primarily utilized for path planning and trajectory-tracking. However, prior studies have been confronted with some limitations. The time-varying ocean current affects algorithmic sampling and AUV motion and then leads to an overestimation error during path planning. In addition, the ocean current makes it easy to fall into local optima during trajectory planning. To address these problems, this paper presents a reinforcement learning-based motion planning algorithm with comprehensive ocean information (RLBMPA-COI). First, we introduce real ocean data to construct a time-varying ocean current motion model. Then, comprehensive ocean information and AUV motion position are introduced, and the objective function is optimized in the state-action value network to reduce overestimation errors. Finally, state transfer and reward functions are designed based on real ocean current data to achieve multi-objective path planning and adaptive event triggering in trajectorytracking to improve robustness and adaptability. The numerical simulation results show that the proposed algorithm has a better path planning ability and a more robust trajectory-tracking effect than those of traditional reinforcement learning algorithms. Polar-orbiting satellite observations are of fundamental importance to explore the main scientific challenges in the Arctic Ocean, as they provide information on bio-geo-physical variables with a denser spatial and temporal coverage than in-situ instruments in such a harsh and inaccessible environment. However, they are limited by the lack of coverage near the North Pole (Polar gap), the polar night, and frequent cloud cover or haze over the ocean and sea ice, which prevent the use of optical satellite instruments, as well as by the limited availability of external validation data. The satellite sensors' coverage and repeat cycles may also have limitations in properly identifying and resolving the dominant spatial and temporal scales of atmospheric, ocean, cryosphere and land variability and their interactive processes and feedback mechanisms. In this paper, we provide a state of the art of contribution of satellite observations to the understanding of the polar environment and climate scientific challenges tackled within the Arktalas Hoavva project funded by the European Space Agency. We identify the current limitations to the wider use of polar orbiting remote sensing data, as well as the observational gaps of the existing satellite missions. A comprehensive overview of all satellite missions and applications is given provided with a primary focus on the European satellites. The accurate estimation of ocean tide loading displacements is essential and necessary for geodesy, oceanic and geophysical studies. It is common knowledge that K1 and K2 tidal constituents estimated from Global Positioning System (GPS) observations are unsatisfactory because their tidal periods are nearly same to the revisit cycle or orbital period of GPS constellation. To date, this troublesome problem is not fully solved. In this paper, we revisit this important issue and develop a novel method based on the unique characteristic of tidal waves to separate GPS-system errors from astronomical K1/K2 tides. The well-known credo of smoothness indicates that tidal admittances of astronomical constituents in a narrow band can be expressed as smooth functions of tidal frequencies, while the interference of GPS-system errors seriously damages the smooth nature of observed tidal admittances. Via quadratic fitting, smooth functions of tidal frequencies for tidal admittances can be determined, thus, astronomical K1 and K2 tides can be interpolated using fitted quadratic functions. Three GPS stations are selected to demonstrate our method because of their typicality in terms of poor estimates of K1/K2 tidal parameters related to GPS-system errors. After removing GPS-systematical contributions based on our method, corrected K1/K2 tides at three GPS stations are much closer to the modeled K1/K2 tides from FES2014, which is one of the most accurate tide models. In this paper, a method for joint sea surface rainfall intensity (RI), wind speed, and wave height retrieval based on spaceborne global navigation satellite system reflectometry (GNSS-R) data is proposed, which especially considers the effects between these two parameters. A method of rainfall detection (RD) according to different wind speed ranges is also proposed by mitigating the impact of swell and wind speed. The results, with data collected over the oceans near Southeast Asia, show that the RD method has a detection accuracy of up to 81.74%. The RI retrieval accuracy can reach about 2 mm/h by simultaneously correcting the effects of wind speed and swell. The accuracy of wind speed retrieval is improved by about 5% after removing rainfall interference through RD in advance. After considering the influence of wind speed and eliminating rainfall interference, the retrieval accuracy of significant wave height (SWH) is improved by about 18%. Finally, the deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) model is built to estimate the SWH of the swell. The results show that the retrieval accuracy of the swell height is better than 0.20 m after excluding rainfall interference. The proposed joint retrieval method provides an important reference for the future acquisition of multiple high-precision marine geophysical parameters by spaceborne GNSS-R technology. In this paper, we aimed to clarify the problem of foam coverage dependence on wave fetch, which is of interest in satellite microwave radiometry, but for which controversial results were reported previously. The classical approach to investigating developing waves was applied. That is, the waves are considered as coming from the coast under approximately constant wind velocity. The study includes two scenes of intensive katabatic winds in the Gulf of Lion and the Gulf of Tehuantepec. We used two Bands of Landsat OLI images to extract the wave spectral peak frequency and the sea fraction covered by foam simultaneously along the wave fetch. The distributions of the spectral peak frequency along the fetch obeying the classical wave growth law clearly showed that we observed the developing waves. Along the fetch, the sea surface covered with foam grows about three times with the power law. This development of foam coverage occurred at the range of dimensionless fetches from 50 up to 7000 if the fetch is scaled using wind velocity and gravity acceleration. A simple model of the foam coverage growth with wave fetch is suggested. We modeled wave energy dissipation rate using the JONSWAP wave spectrum for developing seas. On 23 November 2021, the Gaofen-3-02 (GF3-02) satellite was successfully launched in the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center of China. The primary payload is C-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), with a maximum resolution of 1 m, and includes 12 imaging modes such as Spotlight, Strip, and TOPSAR, which will play an essential role in marine environment monitoring. As an important marine environmental parameter, the wind speed accuracy retrieved by GF3-02 SAR directly reflects its performance and effectiveness as an operational product. Therefore, based on the wind data of buoys of the National Data Buoy Center (NDBC), ECMWF reanalysis V5 (ERA5), and HY-2B Scatterometer (SCA), a preliminary accuracy assessment of the wind speed retrieved by GF3-02 SAR is carried out in this paper. The wind speed retrieval accuracy of GF3-02 SAR in the co-polarization (HH+VV) data under different Geophysical Model Functions (GMFs) is discussed by using 478 level-1A Single Look Complex (SLC) ocean products acquired in Quad-Polarization Strip I (QPSI) and produced by the National Satellite Ocean Application Service (NSOAS) from January to March 2022. The results show that the optimal root mean square errors (RMSE) are 1.40 m/s, 1.18 m/s, and 1.24 m/s for the VV polarization and 1.39 m/s, 1.19 m/s, and 1.52 m/s for the HH polarization compared to the NDBC wind speed, the ERA5 wind speed, and the HY-2B SCA wind speed, respectively. Geosynchronous (GEO) spaceborne–airborne very high-frequency ultra-wideband bistatic synthetic aperture radar (VHF UWB BiSAR) can conduct high-resolution and wide-swath imaging for ocean scenes. However, GEO spaceborne–airborne VHF UWB BiSAR imaging faces some challenges such as the geometric configuration, huge amount of echo data, serious range–azimuth coupling, large spatial variance, and complex motion error, which increases the difficulty of the high-efficiency and high-precision imaging. In this paper, we present an improved bistatic fast factorization backprojection (FFBP) algorithm for ocean scene imaging using the GEO satellite-unmanned aerial vehicle (GEO-UAV) VHF UWB BiSAR, which can solve the above issues with high efficiency and high precision. This method reconstructs the subimages in the orthogonal elliptical polar (OEP) coordinate system based on the GEO satellite and UAV trajectories as well as the location of the imaged scene, which can further reduce the computational burden. First, the imaging geometry and signal model of the GEO-UAV VHF UWB BiSAR are established, and the construction of the OEP coordinate system and the subaperture imaging method are proposed. Moreover, the Nyquist sampling requirements for the subimages in the OEP coordinate system are derived from the range error perspective, which can offer a near-optimum tradeoff between precision and efficiency. In addition, the superiority of the OEP coordinate system is analyzed, which demonstrates that the angular dimensional sampling rate of the subimages is significantly reduced. Finally, the implementation processes and computational burden of the proposed algorithm are provided, and the speed-up factor of the proposed FFBP algorithm compared with the BP algorithm is derived and discussed. Experimental results of ideal point targets and natural ocean scenes demonstrate the correctness and effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, which can achieve near-optimal imaging performance with a low computational burden. The SWOT (Surface Water Ocean Topography) mission will provide high-resolution and two-dimensional measurements of sea surface height (SSH). However, despite its unprecedented precision, SWOT's Ka-band Radar Interferometer (KaRIn) still exhibits a substantial amount of random noise. In turn, the random noise limits the ability of SWOT to capture the smallest scales of the ocean's topography and its derivatives. In that context, this paper explores the feasibility, strengths and limits of a noise-reduction algorithm based on a convolutional neural network. The model is based on a U-Net architecture and is trained and tested with simulated data from the North Atlantic. Our results are compared to classical smoothing methods: a median filter, a Lanczos kernel smoother and the SWOT de-noising algorithm developed by Gomez-Navarro et al. Our U-Net model yields better results for all the evaluation metrics: 2 mm root mean square error, sub-millimetric bias, variance reduction by factor of 44 (16 dB) and an accurate power spectral density down to 10–20 km wavelengths. We also tested various scenarios to infer the robustness and the stability of the U-Net. The U-Net always exhibits good performance and can be further improved with retraining if necessary. This robustness in simulation is very encouraging: our findings show that the U-Net architecture is likely one of the best candidates to reduce the noise of flight data from KaRIn. This paper focuses on the proof and application of discriminating between oil spills and seawater (including the "look-alikes", named low wind areas) based on the polarization ratio. A new relative polarization ratio ( P R r ) method is proposed, which is based on the difference between the scattering mechanism and the dielectric constant for oil spills compared to that of seawater. The case study found that (1) P R r numerically amplifies the contrast between oil spills and seawater, reduces the difference between low wind areas and ordinary seawater, and exhibits better details of the image; (2) the threshold method based on Euclidean distance can obtain the highest classification overall accuracy within the allowable error range, and can be widely used in the study of different incidence angles and environmental conditions; and (3) the identification of oil spills and seawater by the proposed methods can largely avoid the misjudgment of low wind areas as oil spills. Considering visual interpretation as the reference 'ground truth', the overall classification accuracy of all cases is more than 95%; only the edge of the diffuse thin oil slick and oil–water mixture is difficult to identify. Due to the change in environmental steering flow influenced by the surrounding synoptic systems, typhoon tracks often manifest sudden turnings, potentially prolonging the residence time of typhoon wind forcing and, thus, exerting a remarkable upper ocean response. Typhoon Prapiroon (2012) in the western North Pacific, had a very complex track and underwent two sudden-turning stages over its lifespan. On the basis of satellite and Argo float observations, this paper studies the surface and subsurface ocean environmental responses to Prapiroon. The observations show that the oceanic responses during the two sudden-turning stages of Prapiroon were much more remarkable than those in the straight-moving stage, including significant sea surface temperature (SST) cooling (~7 °C), sea surface chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) concentration increase (>0.30 mg m−3), and sea surface height anomaly (SSHA) reduction (<−50 cm), compared with those in the straight-moving stage, with SST cooling weaker than 3 °C, Chl-a concentration increase less than 0.05 mg m−3, and SSHA reduction less than −10 cm. By employing the three-dimensional Price–Weller–Pinkel (3DPWP) model to conduct a series of sensitivity experiments, we separate the contribution of the typhoon track's sudden turnings to the upper ocean response and find that the relative contributions of the two sudden turnings to SST cooling (sea surface salinity salinification) reached 38.4% (23.5%) and 46.8% (28.0%), respectively. In addition, the model experiments further show that the sudden turning could also induce stronger upwelling in the subsurface ocean. Our results demonstrate that typhoon track sudden turning could result in more kinetic energy input into the upper ocean, enhancing the physical and biological responses in the upper ocean. In this paper, we analyze the surface winds of ECMWF ERA5 reanalysis in the Atlantic Ocean. The first part addresses a reanalysis validation, studying the spatial distribution of the errors and the performance as a function of the percentiles, with a further investigation under cyclonic conditions. The second part proposes and compares two calibration models, a simple least-squares linear regression (LR) and the quantile mapping method (QM). Our results indicate that ERA5 provides high-quality winds for non-extreme conditions, especially at the eastern boundaries, with bias between −0.5 and 0.3 m/s and RMSE below 1.5 m/s. The reanalysis errors are site-dependent, where large RMSE and severe underestimation are found in tropical latitudes and locations following the warm currents. The most extreme winds in tropical cyclones show the worst results, with RMSE above 5 m/s. Apart from these areas, the strong winds at extratropical locations are well represented. The bias-correction models have proven to be very efficient in removing systematic bias. The LR works well for low-to-mild wind intensities while the QM is better for the upper percentiles and winds above 15 m/s—an improvement of 10% in RMSE and 50% for the bias compared to the original reanalysis is reported. Due to the complexity of ocean environments, inhomogeneous phenomenon always exist in SAR images of oil spills on the sea surface. In order to address this issue, a universal parameter adaptive Gamma-Log net for detecting oil spills in inhomogeneous SAR images is proposed in this paper. The Gamma-Log net consists of an image feature division module, a correction parameter extraction module, a Gamma-Log correction module and a feature integration module. The normalized input image features are divided into four blocks for correction in the image feature division module. According to the input characteristics, the Gamma-Log correction input parameters are obtained in the correction parameter extraction module. Subsequently, an adaptive method is introduced to adjust the parameters independently by the network to improve efficiency. Then, the input features are corrected in the Gamma-Log correction module by Gamma correction and logarithmic correction. Both correction methods can adjust the gray imbalance in the image and change the overall gray value and contrast. The separated feature blocks are finally reunited together by the feature integration module. In order to avoid information loss, an attention mechanism is added to this module. In the experiments, by adding Gamma-Log Net to multiple semantic segmentation networks, the MIoU and dice indicators increased to some extent, and the HD distance(Hausdorff-95) decreased. Depth-resolved information is essential for ocean research. For this study, we developed a shipborne photon-counting lidar for depth-resolved oceanic plankton observation. A pulsed fiber laser with frequency doubling to 532 nm acts as a light source, generating a single pulse at the micro-joule level with a pulse width of less than 1 ns. The receiver is capable of simultaneously detecting the elastic signal at two orthogonal polarization states, the Raman scattering from seawater, and the fluorescence signal from chlorophyll A. The data acquisition system utilizes the photon-counting technique to record each photon event, after which the backscattering signal intensity can be recovered by counting photons from multiple pulses. Benefitting from the immunity of this statistical detection method to the ringing effect of the detector and amplifier circuit, high-sensitivity and high-linearity backscatter signal measurements are realized. In this paper, we analyze and correct the after-pulse phenomenon of high-linearity signals through experiments and theoretical simulations. Through the after-pulse correction, the lidar attenuation coefficient retrieved from the corrected signal are in good agreement with the diffuse attenuation coefficients calculated from the in situ instrument, indicating the potential of this shipborne photon-counting lidar for ocean observation applications. The Northwest (NW) Atlantic has experienced extreme ecological impacts from Marine Heatwaves (MHWs) within the past decade. This paper focuses on four MHW active years (2012, 2016, 2017, and 2020) and the relationship between Sea Surface Temperature anomalies (SSTA), Sea Surface Salinity anomalies (SSSA), North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), Geopotential Height anomalies (ZA), and anomalous Jet Stream positions (JSPA). Multichannel singular spectrum analysis (MSSA) reveals the strongest temporal covariances between SSSA and SSTA, and JSPA and SSTA for all years, particularly for 2020 (SSSA–SSTA: 50%, JSPA–SSTA: 51%) indicating that this active MHW year was more atmospherically driven, followed by 2012, which had the second highest temporal covariances (SSSA–SSTA: 47%, JSPA–SSTA: 50%) between these parameters. Spatial correlations for SSSA and SSTA between NAO during MHW active years disrupt the long–term (2010–2020) positive relationship in the NW Atlantic. SSSA and JSPA, and SSSA and SSTA were strongly correlated across the NW Atlantic; 2012 SSSA–JSPA correlations were strong and positive between 56–62°W, and 2016, 2017, and 2020 SSSA–JSPA correlations were mostly strong and negative, with strong positive correlations present near the coastline (70–66°W) or off the NW Atlantic shelf (52–48°W). SSSA–SSTA showed the opposite correlations of similar spatial distributions of SSSA–JSPA for all MHW active years. This indicates strong relationships between JSPA, SSSA, and SSTA during MHWs. Ocean observation is essential for studying ocean dynamics, climate change, and carbon cycles. Due to the difficulty and high cost of in situ observations, existing ocean observations are inadequate, and satellite observations are mostly surface observations. Previous work has not adequately considered the spatio-temporal correlation within the ocean itself. This paper proposes a new method—convolutional long short-term memory network (ConvLSTM)—for the inversion of the ocean subsurface temperature and salinity fields with the sea surface satellite observations (sea surface temperature, sea surface salinity, sea surface height, and sea surface wind) and subsurface Argo reanalyze data. Given the time dependence and spatial correlation of the ocean dynamic parameters, the ConvLSTM model can improve inversion models' robustness and generalizability by considering ocean variability's significant spatial and temporal correlation characteristics. Taking the 2018 results as an example, our average inversion results in an overall normalized root mean square error (NRMSE) of 0.0568 °C/0.0027 PSS and a correlation coefficient (R) of 0.9819/0.9997 for subsurface temperature (ST)/subsurface salinity (SS). The results show that SSTA, SSSA SSHA, and SSWA together are valuable parameters for obtaining accurate ST/SS estimates, and the use of multiple channels in shallow seas is effective. This study demonstrates that ConvLSTM is superior in modeling the subsurface temperature and salinity fields, fully taking global ocean data's spatial and temporal correlation into account, and outperforms the classic random forest and LSTM approaches in predicting subsurface temperature and salinity fields. HF radars are now an important part of operational coastal observing systems where they are used primarily for measuring surface currents. Their use for wave and wind direction measurement has also been demonstrated. These measurements are based on physical models of radar backscatter from the ocean surface described in terms of its ocean wave directional spectrum and the influence thereon of the surface current. Although this spectrum contains information about the local wind that is generating the wind sea part of the spectrum, it also includes spectral components propagating into the local area having been generated by winds away from the area i.e., swell. In addition, the relationship between the local wind sea and wind speed depends on fetch and duration. Thus, finding a physical model to extract wind speed from the radar signal is not straightforward. In this paper, methods that have been proposed to date will be briefly reviewed and an alternative approach is developed using machine learning methods. These have been applied to three different data sets using different radar systems in different locations. In this paper, we present several study cases focused on marine, oceanographic, and atmospheric environments, which would greatly benefit from the use of a deployable system for small satellite observations. As opposed to the large standard ones, small satellites have become an effective and affordable alternative access to space, owing to their lower costs, innovative design and technology, and higher revisiting times, when launched in a constellation configuration. One of the biggest challenges is created by the small satellite instrumentation working in the visible (VIS), infrared (IR), and microwave (MW) spectral ranges, for which the resolution of the acquired data depends on the physical dimension of the telescope and the antenna collecting the signal. In this respect, a deployable payload, fitting the limited size and mass imposed by the small satellite architecture, once unfolded in space, can reach performances similar to those of larger satellites. In this study, we show how ecology and Earth Observations can benefit from data acquired by small satellites, and how they can be further improved thanks to deployable payloads. We focus on DORA—Deployable Optics for Remote sensing Applications—in the VIS to TIR spectral range, and on a planned application in the MW spectral range, and we carry out a radiometric analysis to verify its performances for Earth Observation studies. Most advances in the remote sensing of floating marine plastic litter have been made using passive remote-sensing techniques in the visible (VIS) to short-wave-infrared (SWIR) parts of the electromagnetic spectrum based on the spectral absorption features of plastic surfaces. In this paper, we present developments of new and emerging remote-sensing technologies of marine plastic litter such as passive techniques: fluid lensing, multi-angle polarimetry, and thermal infrared sensing (TIS); and active techniques: light detection and ranging (LiDAR), multispectral imaging detection and active reflectance (MiDAR), and radio detection and ranging (RADAR). Our review of the detection capabilities and limitations of the different sensing technologies shows that each has their own weaknesses and strengths, and that there is not one single sensing technique that applies to all kinds of marine litter under every different condition in the aquatic environment. Rather, we should focus on the synergy between different technologies to detect marine plastic litter and potentially the use of proxies to estimate its presence. Therefore, in addition to further developing remote-sensing techniques, more research is needed in the composition of marine litter and the relationships between marine plastic litter and their proxies. In this paper, we propose a common vocabulary to help the community to translate concepts among different disciplines and techniques.

Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) is a large-scale physical ocean phenomenon in the Indian Ocean that plays an important role in predicting the El Nino Southern Oscillation in the tropical Pacific. Predicting the occurrence of IOD is of great significance to the study of climate change and other marine phenomena. Generally, the IOD index is calculated to judge whether the IOD occurs. In this paper, a convolutional LSTM (convLSTM) neural network is used to build the deep learning model to predict the sea surface temperature in the next seven months and calculate the IOD index. Through the analysis of marine atmospheric data with complex temporal and spatial relationships, the wind field signal knowledge of the physical ocean is introduced to predict IOD phenomenon by combining the prior knowledge of the physical ocean and deep learning. The experimental results show that the average correlation of IOD index time series to the true IOD index time series is 82.87% from 2015 to 2018, seven months ahead for IOD prediction. IOD manifests as sea surface temperature (SST) anomaly changes, and this thesis verifies that the wind field signal information has a positive impact on the prediction of IOD changes. Moreover, the convLSTM can predict this anomaly better. The IOD index line graph can generally fit the real IOD index variation trend, which has a profound impact on the study of the IOD phenomenon. Global joint measurements of sea surface winds and currents are planned using satellite-based Doppler scatterometers operating in the Ka-band to achieve improved spatial resolution and retrieval accuracy. Still, the knowledge of sea surface Ka-band backscatter properties is poor, particularly, at high winds (>20 m s − 1 ). Sea surface radar cross-section in the Ka-band, in contrast to that in the lower frequency Ku-/X-/C-/L-bands, is likely more sensitive to sea spray, small-scale particles typically present at high winds. In this paper, tower-based field data collected by a continuous dual-co-polarized Ka-band radar during a strong offshore wind event (with wind speed reaching 33 m s − 1 ) are analyzed. This katabatic wind event (≈12 h long) was also recorded by supplementary wave, wind, and current sensors. At the wave fetch of ≈1 km, the maximum wavelength of observed offshore waves was ≈10 m. For such extremely young wind–sea conditions, an apparent sea spray generation was observed during wind gusts. Radar measurements were performed at 20 ∘ and 45 ∘ incidence angles, mostly for cross- and up-wind azimuth look geometry. Based on these high wind measurements, the previously developed Ka-band empirical model is tested and compared with other published geophysical model functions. Dual-co-polarized measurements are used to infer resonant Bragg and non-Bragg scattering components and assess the short wind wave spectrum, which shows a clear tendency for saturation at high winds. The presence of sea spray signatures is apparent in the high-frequency tails of radar Doppler spectra, but their overall contribution to the Doppler centroid frequency is weak. Hence, the standard modulation transfer function approach developed for moderate winds is still applicable at high winds for interpreting the wave-induced Doppler velocity and inferring sea surface currents. Using the Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation Satellite 2 (ICESat-2) global high-resolution elevation measurements, it is possible to distinguish individual surface ocean waves. With the vast majority of ocean surveying missions using radar satellites, ICESat-2 observations are an important addition to ocean surveys. ICESat-2 can also provide additional observations not possible with radar. In this paper, we consolidate the ICESat-2 ocean observations by comparing the significant wave height (SWH) with coincident CryoSat-2 radar observations during the CRYO2ICE campaign from August 2020 to August 2021. We use 136 orbit segments, constrained to the Pacific and Atlantic oceans as well as the Bering Sea, to compare observations to show the level of agreement between these systems. Three models based on ICESat-2 are used in the comparison: the standard ocean data output (ATL12), a method of modeling the individual surface waves using the geolocated photons and, functioning as a baseline, an approach using the standard deviation of the ocean surface. We find the following correlations between the SWHs from the models and the SWHs from CryoSat-2: 0.97 for ATL12, 0.95 for the observed waves model, and 0.97 for the standard deviation model. In the same comparison, we find mean differences relative to the observed SWHs for each model, as well as errors, which increase as the SWH increases. The SWH observed from ICESat-2 is found to agree with observations from CryoSat-2, with limitations due to changes in the sea state between the satellite observations. Observing the individual surface waves from ICESat-2 can therefore provide additional observed properties of the sea state that can be used alongside other global observations. The IMERG data product is an optimal combination of precipitation estimates from the Global Precipitation Mission (GPM), making use of a variety of data types, primarily data from various spaceborne passive instruments. Previous versions of the IMERG product have been extensively validated by comparisons with gauge data and ground-based radars over land. However, IMERG rain rates, especially sub-daily, over open ocean are less validated due to the scarcity of comparison data, particularly with the relatively new Version 07. To address this issue, we consider IMERG V07 30-min data acquired in tropical cyclones over open ocean. We perform two tasks. The first is a straightforward comparison between IMERG precipitation rates and those retrieved from the GPM Dual-frequency Precipitation Radar (DPR). From this, we find that IMERG and DPR are close at low rain rates, while, at high rain rates, IMERG tends to be lower than DPR. The second task is the assessment of IMERG's ability to represent or detect structures commonly seen in tropical cyclones, including the annular structure and concentric eyewalls. For this, we operate on IMERG data with many machine learning algorithms and are able to achieve a 96% classification accuracy, indicating that IMERG does indeed contain TC structural information. We present a review of in situ observations regarding the interactions between tropical cyclones and the ocean in the western North Pacific for the year 2023. A total of at least 13 tropical cyclones occurred during this period. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, Typhoon Mawar recorded the yearly minimum pressure at 900 hPar. On average, each tropical cyclone captured 7.4 surface drifters and 25.2 Argo floats when the search radius is 300 km. During Guchol, the maximum in situ Lagrangian current reached 1.23 m/s, with sustained wind speeds of the tropical cyclone up to 31.7 m/s and a relative position of 174 km. Additionally, several Argo floats were active during tropical cyclones, with maximum sea surface temperature cooling reaching 0.66 °C. This annual review provides a comprehensive summary of the current state of in situ observations regarding tropical cyclone–ocean interaction. Accurate modeling of the ocean response to tropical cyclones (TCs) requires high-quality wind fields to force ocean models. In this study, blended wind fields are generated using multi-source satellite data and the Climate Forecast System Reanalysis (CFSR) wind data. We utilize the hybrid wind fields to drive the Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS) for simulating oceanic dynamic and thermodynamic parameters. The model's simulated ocean surface and sub-surface temperatures, as well as current speeds, are generally consistent with satellite and in situ observations collected during TC Winston and Freddy. The results are significantly better than those simulated by ROMS using wind forcing from CFSR alone. These results suggest that incorporating satellite wind data into the atmospheric forcing has the potential to enhance vertical mixing and improve simulations of the upper ocean response to TCs. Real-time reconstruction of ocean surface currents is a challenge due to the complex, non-linear dynamics of the ocean, the small number of in situ measurements, and the spatio-temporal heterogeneity of satellite altimetry observations. To address this challenge, we introduce HIRES-CURRENTS-Net, an operational real-time convolutional neural network (CNN) model for daily ocean current reconstruction. This study focuses on the Mediterranean Sea, a region where operational models have great difficulty predicting surface currents. Notably, our model showcases higher accuracy compared to commonly used alternative methods. HIRES-CURRENTS-Net integrates high-resolution measurements from the infrared or visible spectrum—high resolution Sea Surface Temperature (SST) or chlorophyll (CHL) images—in addition to the low-resolution Sea Surface Height (SSH) maps derived from satellite altimeters. In the first stage, we apply a transfer learning method which uses a high-resolution numerical model to pre-train our CNN model on simulated SSH and SST data with synthetic clouds. The observation of System Simulation Experiments (OSSEs) offers us a sufficient training dataset with reference surface currents at very high resolution, and a model trained on this data can then be applied to real data. In the second stage, to enhance the real-time operational performance of our model over previous methods, we fine-tune the CNN model on real satellite data using a novel pseudo-labeling strategy. We validate HIRES-CURRENTS-Net on real data from drifters and demonstrate that our data-driven approach proves effective for real-time sea surface current reconstruction with potential operational applications such as ship routing. Doppler mis-registrations in azimuth can lead to ocean waves shorter than a specific wavelength being undetectable by SAR. In order to evaluate the actual ocean wave observation ability, the accuracy of Sentinel-1 SAR ocean wave spectra from January 2016 to December 2021 is evaluated by comparisons to NDBC buoys, ERA5 wave height, and CMEMS buoys. The results compared with NDBC show that the spectral shape of Sentinel-1 SAR ocean wave spectra is accurate, while the spectral values need to be improved. The wave spectra of Sentinel-1 have the best observations in season autumn. The comparison results of total wave height show the RMSE and bias are 0.91 m and −0.52 m for the comparisons to NDBC buoy wave spectra data, 0.93 m and −0.68 m for the comparison to ERA5 wave height data, and 0.9 m and −0.35 m for the comparisons to CMEMS buoy data. The comparison results of wave height in different wind speeds and areas shows that the accuracy of Sentinel-1 wave mode data is relatively good in the open ocean located in middle and low latitude area under the medium wind speed, while those are relatively poor in high latitude areas or the areas with excessively high or low wind speed. The image intensities of low-backscattering areas in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images are often seriously contaminated by the system noise floor and azimuthal ambiguity signal from adjacent high-backscattering areas. Hence, the image intensity of low-backscattering areas does not correctly reflect the backscattering intensity, which causes confusion in subsequent image processing or interpretation. In this paper, a method is proposed to estimate the normalized radar cross-section (NRCS) of low-backscattering area by utilizing the differences between noise, azimuthal ambiguity, and signal in the Doppler frequency domain of single-look SAR images; the aim is to eliminate the effect of system noise and azimuthal ambiguity. Analysis shows that, for a spaceborne SAR with a noise equivalent sigma zero (NESZ) of −25 dB and a single-look pixel of 8 m × 5 m, the NRCS-estimation precision of this method can reach −38 dB at a resolution of 96 m × 100 m. Three examples are given to validate the advantages of this method in estimating the low NRCS and the filtering of the azimuthal ambiguity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Dissolved oxygen (DO) is essential for assessing and monitoring the health of marine ecosystems. The phenomenon of ocean deoxygenation is widely recognized. Nevertheless, the limited availability of observations poses a challenge in achieving a comprehensive understanding of global ocean DO dynamics and trends. The study addresses the challenge of unevenly distributed Argo DO data by developing time–space–depth machine learning (TSD-ML), a novel machine learning-based model designed to enhance reconstruction accuracy in data-sparse regions. TSD-ML partitions Argo data into segments based on time, depth, and spatial dimensions, and conducts model training for each segment. This research contrasts the effectiveness of partitioned and non-partitioned modeling approaches using three distinct ML regression methods. The results reveal that TSD-ML significantly enhances reconstruction accuracy in areas with uneven DO data distribution, achieving a 30% reduction in root mean square error (RMSE) and a 20% decrease in mean absolute error (MAE). In addition, a comparison with WOA18 and GLODAPv2 ship survey data confirms the high accuracy of the reconstructions. We present multi-sensor measurements from satellites, unmanned aerial vehicle, marine radar, thermal profilers, and repeated conductivity–temperature–depth casts made in the Kara Gates strait connecting the Barents and the Kara Seas during spring tide in August 2021. Analysis of the field data during an 18-h period from four stations provides evidence that a complex sill in the Kara Gates is the site of regular production of intense large-amplitude nonlinear internal waves. Satellite data show a presence of a relatively warm northeastward surface current from the Barents Sea toward the Kara Sea attaining 0.8–0.9 m/s. Triangle-shaped measurements using three thermal profilers revealed pronounced vertical thermocline oscillations up to 40 m associated with propagation of short-period nonlinear internal waves of depression generated by stratified flow passing a system of shallow sills in the strait. The most intense waves were recorded during the ebb tide slackening and reversal when the background flow was predominantly supercritical. Observed internal waves had wavelengths of ~100 m and traveled northeastward with phase speeds of 0.8–0.9 m/s. The total internal wave energy per unit crest length for the largest waves was estimated to be equal to 1.0–1.8 MJ/m. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Determining the dynamic processes of the subsurface ocean is a critical yet formidable undertaking given the sparse measurement resources available presently. In this study, using the light gradient boosting machine algorithm (LightGBM), we report for the first time a machine learning strategy for retrieving subsurface velocities at 1000 dbar depth in the Southern Ocean from information derived from satellite observations. Argo velocity measurements are used in the training and validation of the LightGBM model. The results show that reconstructed subsurface velocity agrees better with Argo velocity than reanalysis datasets. In particular, the subsurface velocity estimates have a correlation coefficient of 0.78 and an RMSE of 4.09 cm/s, which is much better than the ECCO estimates, GODAS estimates, GLORYS12V1 estimates, and Ora-S5 estimates. The LightGBM model has a higher skill in the reconstruction of subsurface velocity than the random forest and the linear regressor models. The estimated subsurface velocity exhibits a statistically significant increase at 1000 dbar since the 1990s, providing new evidence for the deep acceleration of mean circulation in the Southern Ocean. The Agulhas Return Current (ARC), as a primary component of the Agulhas system, contributes to water exchange and mass transport between the southern portions of the Indian and Atlantic Ocean basins. In this study, satellite altimeter data and reanalysis datasets, and a new set of criteria for the piecewise definition of the jet axis are used to explore the long-term change of the ARC's axis position in recent three decades. It is found that the ARC axis exhibits a significant slanting trend with its western part (35–48°E) migrating northward and the eastern part (48–70°E) migrating southward. The meridional movement of the ARC path could be attributed to large-scale wind forcing. The anomalous surface wind stress curl, by Ekman pumping mechanism, leads to positive–negative–positive sea surface height anomalies in the western section and negative–positive–negative anomalies in the eastern section, thus the ARC axis tilts accordingly, in a northwest–southeast direction. Further analysis suggests that this ARC slanting trend is more dependent on the southward shift of the downstream axis and less on the topographic steering upstream. The downstream axis is more likely to interact with the ACC fronts and its migration could dominate the local EKE pattern by changing the background circulation and energy cascade direction. For the headstream west of 35°E, the ARC axis is more subject to topography, thus the EKE change is more dominated by eddy activity processes, including shedding, propagation and merging. To assist in the detection of ship targets in complex sea conditions, a numerical simulation method is proposed to obtain synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images of time-varying ocean ship wakes under various radar, ship, and sea surface parameters. This method addresses the limitations of recent simulations, which failed to simultaneously incorporate different types of time-varying ship wakes, simulate based on the echo data, and discuss the velocity bunching (VB) effect on the image results. To address these issues, firstly, the time-varying wave height and velocity fields of the sea surface, Kelvin wakes, and turbulence wakes are simulated using the linear filtering method, classic fluid dynamics models, and attenuation function method, respectively. Secondly, raw data of the ocean ship wakes are obtained by calculating the backscattering fields using geophysical model functions (GMFs), as well as by determining the changing slant range varying with the elevation and velocity fields. Thirdly, by applying the Range-Doppler algorithm (RDA) for pulse compression and range cell migration correction (RCMC) on the echo data, SAR images with and without the VB effect are generated. Our simulation also accounts for the influence of speckle noise. The SAR imaging results indicate that whether the VB effect is considered or not, the radar electromagnetic wavebands, polarization modes, wind speeds, and the relative wind directions have distinct impacts on the SAR image intensity, and the texture and morphology of ship wakes vary significantly with the wind speeds, ship speeds, and the relative radar looking directions. Research on coastal ocean circulation patterns over long time periods is significant for various marine endeavors: environmental protection, coastal engineering construction, and marine renewable energy extraction. Based on sea surface current data remotely observed using a shore-based high frequency radar (HFR) system for one year (2016), spatiotemporal characteristics of surface flow fields of sea surface flow fields along the west coast of Ireland are studied using harmonic analysis, rotary spectral analysis and representative flow fields over different seasons and the whole year. Coastal surface currents in the study area are strongly affected by tidal dynamics of the M2 constituent, showing significant characteristics of regular semidiurnal tide, such as M2 and S2. The energy spectrum distribution indicates that the tidal constituents M2 and S2 are the dominant periodic energy constituents in a counterclockwise spectrum, which mainly presents rotating flow; the representative diurnal tidal constituents is the constituent K1, and its energy spectrum distribution is mainly clockwise. A comparison between probable maximum current velocity (PMCV) and measured maximum current velocity (MMCV) is presented. It shows that although tidal current characteristics in the study area are significant, the main driving force of the currents at the time of the maximum currents is wind energy. Here, we examine extreme ocean winds associated with intense wintertime extratropical windstorms over the North Pacific. The study was mainly based on NASA Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) L-band radiometer observations allowing the retrieval of ocean wind speeds up to 70 m/s regardless of precipitation intensity. Additionally, we assessed the ability of atmospheric reanalysis ERA5 and the Climate Forecast System Version 2 (CFSv2) to reproduce high-wind features within severe windstorms, particularly those associated with "explosive" cyclogenesis. The analysis identified 145 windstorm events with hurricane-force (HF) wind zones within the SMAP L-band radiometer swath from 2015 to 2023. These windstorms develop most frequently over two areas: southeast of Kamchatka and south of Alaska, spanning 40–47°N latitudes. Both reanalysis datasets significantly underestimated HF wind speeds compared to SMAP measurements, but CFSv2 tends to reproduce more-intense windstorms than ERA5. Among the notable new findings is that the SMAP data revealed two distinct groups in maximum wind speed distribution, indicating the existence of a separate class of severe windstorm events with a distinct mechanism for extreme wind formation related probably to a Shapiro–Keyser cyclogenesis and the presence of sting jet (SJ) feature. The study highlights the potential of SMAP measurements to study wind extremes and underscores the need for improvements in operational predictive models to better reproduce the formation of SJ windstorms. This paper addresses the issue of how the selection of buoys and the calculation of altimeter averages affect the metrics characterising the errors of altimetric wave height estimates. The use of a 51-point median reduces the sensitivity to occasional outliers, but the quality of this measure can be improved by demanding that there is a minimum number of valid measurements. This had a marked impact in both the open ocean and the coastal zone. It also affected the relative ordering of algorithms' performances, as some fared poorly when a representative value was gleaned from a single waveform inversion, but had a much better ranking when a minimum of 20 values were used. Validation procedures could also be improved by choosing altimeter-buoy pairings that showed a good consistency. This paper demonstrated an innovative procedure using the median of the different retrackers analysed, which can be easily extended to other data validation exercises. This led to improved comparison statistics for all algorithms in the open ocean, with many showing errors less than 0.2 m, but there was only one strong change in the relative performance of the 11 Jason-3 retrackers. For Sentinel-3A, removing the inconsistent coastal buoys showed that all of the new algorithms had similar errors of just over 0.2 m. Thus, although improvements were found in the procedure used for the Sea State Round Robin exercise, the relative rankings for the buoy calibrations are mostly unaffected. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Sentinel-3 Mission Performance Centre (S3MPC) is tasked by the European Space Agency (ESA) to monitor the health of the Copernicus Sentinel-3 satellites and ensure a high data quality to the users. This paper deals exclusively with the effort devoted to the altimeter and microwave radiometer, both components of the Surface Topography Mission (STM). The altimeters on Sentinel-3A and -3B are the first to operate in delay-Doppler or SAR mode over all Earth surfaces, which enables better spatial resolution of the signal in the along-track direction and improved noise reduction through multi-looking, whilst the radiometer is a two-channel nadir-viewing system. There are regular routine assessments of the instruments through investigation of telemetered housekeeping data, calibrations over selected sites and comparisons of geophysical retrievals with models, in situ data and other satellite systems. These are performed both to monitor the daily production, assessing the uncertainties and errors on the estimates, and also to characterize the long-term performance for climate science applications. This is critical because an undetected drift in performance could be misconstrued as a climate variation. As the data are used by the Copernicus Services (e.g., CMEMS, Global Land Monitoring Services) and by the research community over open ocean, coastal waters, sea ice, land ice, rivers and lakes, the validation activities encompass all these domains, with regular reports openly available. The S3MPC is also in charge of preparing improvements to the processing, and of the development and tuning of algorithms to improve their accuracy. This paper is thus the first refereed publication to bring together the analysis of SAR altimetry across all these different domains to highlight the benefits and existing challenges. Earth observation data can help us understand and address some of the grand challenges and threats facing us today as a species and as a planet, for example climate change and its impacts and sustainable use of the Earth's resources. However, in order to have confidence in earth observation data, measurements made at the surface of the Earth, with the intention of providing verification or validation of satellite-mounted sensor measurements, should be trustworthy and at least of the same high quality as those taken with the satellite sensors themselves. Metrology tells us that in order to be trustworthy, measurements should include an unbroken chain of SI-traceable calibrations and comparisons and full uncertainty budgets for each of the in situ sensors. Until now, this has not been the case for most satellite validation measurements. Therefore, within this context, the European Space Agency (ESA) funded a series of Fiducial Reference Measurements (FRM) projects targeting the validation of satellite data products of the atmosphere, land, and ocean, and setting the framework, standards, and protocols for future satellite validation efforts. The FRM4SOC project was structured to provide this support for evaluating and improving the state of the art in ocean colour radiometry (OCR) and satellite ocean colour validation through a series of comparisons under the auspices of the Committee on Earth Observation Satellites (CEOS). This followed the recommendations from the International Ocean Colour Coordinating Group's white paper and supports the CEOS ocean colour virtual constellation. The main objective was to establish and maintain SI traceable ground-based FRM for satellite ocean colour and thus make a fundamental contribution to the European system for monitoring the Earth (Copernicus). This paper outlines the FRM4SOC project structure, objectives and methodology and highlights the main results and achievements of the project: (1) An international SI-traceable comparison of irradiance and radiance sources used for OCR calibration that set measurement, calibration and uncertainty estimation protocols and indicated good agreement between the participating calibration laboratories from around the world; (2) An international SI-traceable laboratory and outdoor comparison of radiometers used for satellite ocean colour validation that set OCR calibration and comparison protocols; (3) A major review and update to the protocols for taking irradiance and radiance field measurements for satellite ocean colour validation, with particular focus on aspects of data acquisition and processing that must be considered in the estimation of measurement uncertainty and guidelines for good practice; (4) A technical comparison of the main radiometers used globally for satellite ocean colour validation bringing radiometer manufacturers together around the same table for the first time to discuss instrument characterisation and its documentation, as needed for measurement uncertainty estimation; (5) Two major international side-by-side field intercomparisons of multiple ocean colour radiometers, one on the Atlantic Meridional Transect (AMT) oceanographic cruise, and the other on the Acqua Alta oceanographic tower in the Gulf of Venice; (6) Impact and promotion of FRM within the ocean colour community, including a scientific road map for the FRM-based future of satellite ocean colour validation and vicarious calibration (based on the findings of the FRM4SOC project, the consensus from two major international FRM4SOC workshops and previous literature, including the IOCCG white paper on in situ ocean colour radiometry).
