Improving the carbon sequestration capacity (CSC) of an ecosystem by optimizing urban ecological networks is one of the effective ways to achieve the goal of "carbon neutrality" in the world. The contradiction between the irreplaceable ecological function and economic development of Yancheng City is prominent. Therefore, taking Yancheng City as an example, this paper adopted the morphological spatial pattern analysis–minimum cumulative resistance (MSPA-MCR) model to establish the ecological network of Yancheng City in 2020 and combined it with complex network theory to evaluate its ecological base, network quality, and CSC. The results show that the ecological network of Yancheng City has obvious characteristics of coastal cities. There is a significant positive correlation between CSC and the clustering efficiency of ecological sources, and improving the clustering efficiency of vegetation and water ecological nodes is conducive to enhancing the CSC of ecological networks. In terms of functional restoration of ecological networks, four types of 13 ecological stepping stones and 12 ecological corridors have been designed to strengthen the connectivity and balance of the network, and the improvement of network robustness before and after optimization verifies that the optimization scheme is reasonable and effective. This study improved the optimization method of ecological networks in Yancheng City based on enhancing the CSC of ecological nodes, which provided a theoretical framework and practical reference for the realization of global strategic goals of carbon neutrality. The regions near the Tropic of Cancer are a latitudinal geographical zone with typical climatic, topographic, and human landscape features. It is necessary to explore the region's net primary productivity (NPP) dynamics as it combines complex topography, various vegetation types, and intense human activities. The study sets the transect near the Tropic of Cancer (TCT) and uses the Carnegie–Ames–Stanford (CASA) model to estimate the NPP from 2000 to 2020. After using the RESTREND method, the paper calculates and compares the relative contributions of climate variability and anthropogenic activities to NPP changes. Finally, the geographical detector (Geodetector) model is applied to evaluate how anthropogenic and natural factors affect spatial distribution patterns and NPP changes. The results indicated that the average annual NPP is 820.39 gC·m−2·yr−1 during the 21 years. In addition, when the NPP varies, it increases over the entire study area, with a slope of 4.81 gC·m−2·yr−1, particularly in the western region. Across the entire research area, 63.39% and 77.44% of the total pixels positively contribute to climate variability and human activities in NPP, with a contribution of 0.90 and 3.91 gC·m−2·yr−1, respectively. Within the western, central, and eastern regions, anthropogenic activities have a stronger impact on NPP than climate variability, particularly pronounced in the eastern region. Furthermore, vegetation cover is the dominant factor in the spatial patterns and NPP trends across the TCT and the three regions. In contrast, climate factors are shown to be less influential in NPP distribution than in the western region. The results also demonstrated that the effect of population density and the GDP on NPP gradually rises. Two-factor interaction is much larger than any individual factor, with the dominant interaction factor being vegetation cover with climatic factors. Lastly, the findings revealed that anthropogenic activities positively promote NPP accumulation across the TCT, thus highlighting the importance of human activity-led ecological restoration and ecological protection measures that contribute to regional carbon sequestration and carbon balance. Background: Desertification is one of the main obstacles to global sustainable development. Monitoring, evaluating and mastering its driving factors are very important for the prevention and control of desertification. As one of the largest deserts in China, the development of desertification in Otindag Sandy Land (OSL) resulted in the reduction in land productivity and serious ecological/environmental consequences. Although many ecological restoration projects have been carried out, the vegetation restoration of OSL and the impact mechanism of climate and human activities on desertification remain unclear. Methods: Taking OSL as the research area, this paper constructs the desertification index by using the remote sensing images and meteorological and socio-economic data, between 1986 and 2016, and analyzes the spatio-temporal evolution process and driving factors of desertification by using trend analysis and spearman rank correlation. Results: The results showed that: (1) Desertification in the OSL has fluctuated greatly during the past 30 years. Desertification recovered between 1986 and 1990, expanded and increased between 1990 and 2000, reduced between 2000 and 2004, developed rapidly between 2004 and 2007, and recovered again between 2007 and 2016; (2) The desertification of OSL is dominated by a non-significant change trend, accounting for 73.27%. In the significant change trend, the area of desertification rising trend is 20.32%, which is mainly located in the north and east, and the area of declining trend is 6.41%, which is mainly located in the southwest; (3) Desertification is the result of the superposition of climate and human activities. Climate change is the main influencing factor, followed by human activities, and the superposition effects of the two are spatio-temporal differences. Conclusions: These results shed light on the development of desertification in OSL and the relative importance and complex interrelationship between human activities and climate in regulating the process of desertification. Based on this, we suggest continuing to implement the ecological restoration policy and avoid the destruction of vegetation by large-scale animal husbandry in order to improve the situation of desertification. Coal seam mining in the gully area easily causes ground cracks and even induces landslides, which endanger the safety of mining areas. In this paper, combined with the mining conditions of a mining area in southern Shanxi Province, China, ground crack mapping, crack width dynamic monitoring, and the numerical simulation method are used to study the static and dynamic evolution law and the formation mechanism of ground cracks in the gully area. The research shows that ground cracks mainly include dynamic in-plane cracks and boundary cracks. The dynamic in-plane cracks show the characteristics of "opening first and closing later". The boundary cracks show the characteristics of "only opening and not closing". It is found that the closure of the dynamic in-plane cracks will decrease (compared with plain areas). The development of ground cracks experiences three stages: the initial formation stage, the dynamic development stage, and the gradually stable stage. The "goaf–surface" structure model and force chain arch structure model are established to more intuitively analyze the formation mechanism of ground cracks. To protect and restore this downstream ecosystem, the Tarim River Basin Administration Bureau (TBAB) initiated the Ecological Water Compensation (EWC) project from 2000 to 2018. Revealing the mechanism of vegetation-hydroecological response processes in the lower reaches of the Tarim River before and after EWC work is conducive to water resource planning, utilization and protection. In this paper, the spatiotemporal responses of vegetation and groundwater to EWC were examined at the points, lines, and area (PLA) scale by coupling remote sensing techniques and field station observation data collected between 2000 and 2017. The findings indicated that (1) In general, the regional fractional vegetation coverage (FVC) increased significantly, and the average FVC growth rate was 3.5%/year from 2000 to 2017 (R2 > 0.84, p < 0.01, 2-tailed). (2) The regional vegetation restoration process showed obvious fluctuations and stage characteristics, but the spatial scope of the significantly increased vegetation area was limited. Plants grew rapidly within 10 km of the river, while 10 km away from the water channel, no obvious change was observed. (3) Strong coupling relationships were identified among the FVC growth, EWC volume and groundwater depth variations (p < 0.05, 2-tailed). The response times of the regional vegetation and groundwater depth to EWC indicated one-year lags. The above results imply that the regional ecological environment was significantly improved over the study period, thus confirming that the EWC project made remarkable accomplishments. However, the effect of ecological restoration is not sufficiently stable at present. Vegetation restoration has mainly been centralized around the river channel and is greatly dependent on the annual EWC volume. In addition, the local conditions begin to degrade soon after an EWC project is terminated, and vice versa; when EWC commences, the FVC immediately begins to improve. Vegetation degeneration has become a serious ecological problem for karst regions in the Anthropocene. According to the deficiency of long serial and high-resolution analysis of karst vegetation, this paper reconstructed the variation of vegetation landscape changes from 1987 to 2020 in a typical karst region of China. Using Landsat time series data, the dynamic changes and driving factors of natural karst vegetation were identified at the landscape scale. On the premise of considering the time-lag effect, the main climatic factors that influence vegetation growth were presented at the interannual timescale. Then, the approach of residual analysis was adopted to distinguish the dominant factors affecting vegetation growth. Results of trend analysis revealed that 21.5% of the forestland showed an overall significant decline in vegetation growth, while only 1.5% showed an increase in vegetation growth during the study period. Precipitation and radiation were the dominant meteorological factors influencing vegetation at the interannual timescale, as opposed to temperature. More than 70% of the natural vegetation growth was dominated by climatic factors. The area percentage of negative human impact has increased gradually since 2009 and reached 18.5% in 2020, indicating the currently serious situation of vegetation protection; fortunately, in recent years, human disturbances on vegetation have been mitigated in karst areas with the promotion of ecological conservation and restoration projects. Since the 1980s, with rapid economic development and increased attention given to ecological protection, China has launched a series of ecological-restoration programs to restore the local environment through afforestation and natural forest protection. The evaluation of vegetation restoration is an important part of evaluating the effectiveness of ecological restoration. The Loess Plateau is an area where ecological problems are concentrated, and it is a key area of ecological construction in China. This paper takes the Loess Plateau as the research area, using remote sensing and geographic information technology combined with ecosystem structural changes and an improved residual model to study vegetation restoration. The following main conclusions were drawn: (1) From 1990 to 2000, the farmland area increased by 3084.81 km2, resulting in the encroachment of a large area of grassland and shrubland. (2) With the implementation of ecological engineering, the area of returning farmland to forest and grassland reached 18,001.88 km2; in this period, the NDVI of vegetation increased rapidly, and the area that increased comprised 91.90% of the total area, of which the area of significant increase reached 65.78%. The quality of vegetation was restored to a great extent, and ecological engineering played a major role in this stage.
