Seasonal variations in the vertical Global Positioning System (GPS) time series are mainly caused by environmental loading, e.g., hydrological loading (HYDL), atmospheric loading (ATML), and nontidal oceanic loading (NTOL), which can be synthesized based on models developed by various institutions. A comprehensive comparison among these models is essential to extract reliable vertical deformation data, especially on a regional scale. In this study, we selected 4 HYDL, 5 ATML, 2 NTOL, and their 40 combined products to investigate their effects on seasonal variations in vertical GPS time series at 27 GPS stations in Yunnan, southwest China. These products were provided by the German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ), School and Observatory of Earth Sciences (EOST), and International Mass Loading Service (IMLS). Furthermore, we used the Cross Wavelet Transform (XWT) method to analyze the relative phase relationship between the GPS and the environmental loading time series. Our result showed that the largest average Root-Mean-Square (RMS) reduction value was 1.32 mm after removing the deformation associated with 4 HYDL from the vertical GPS time series, whereas the RMS reductions after 5 ATML and 2 NTOL model corrections were negative at most stations in Yunnan. The average RMS reduction value of the optimal combination of environmental loading products was 1.24 mm, which was worse than the HYDL (IMLS_GEOSFPIT)-only correction, indicating that HYDL was the main factor responding for seasonal variations at most stations in Yunnan. The XWT result showed that HYDL also explained the annual variations reasonably. Our finding implies that HYDL (IMLS_GEOSFPIT) contributes the most to the environmental loading in Yunnan, and that the ATML and NTOL models used in this paper cannot be effective to correct seasonal variations. Surface mass variations inferred from the Global Positioning System (GPS), and observed by the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) and GRACE Follow-On (GFO) complement each other in terms of spatial and temporal coverage. This paper presents an analysis of regional surface mass variations inverted from GPS vertical displacements under different density distributions of GPS stations, and compares the GPS-derived mass variations with GRACE/GFO inversion results in spatial and temporal domains. To this end, GPS vertical displacement data from a total of 85 permanent GPS stations of the Crustal Movement Observation Network of China (CMONOC), the latest GRACE/GFO RL06 spherical harmonic (SH) solutions and GRACE RL06 mascon solutions are used to investigate surface mass variations in four regions or basins, including the Yunnan Province (YNP), Min River Basin (MRB), Jialing River Basin (JLRB), and Wu River Basin (WRB) in Southwest China. Our results showed that the spatial distributions and seasonal characteristics of GPS-derived mass change time series agree well with those from GRACE/GFO observations, especially in regions with relatively dense distributions of GPS stations (e.g., in the YNP and MRB), but there are still obvious discrepancies between the GPS and GRACE/GFO results. Scale factor methods (both basin-scaled and pixel-scaled) were employed to reduce the amplitude discrepancies between GPS and GRACE/GFO results. The results also showed that the one-year gap between the GRACE and GFO missions can be bridged by scaled GPS-derived mass change time series in the four studied regions, especially in the YNP and MRB regions (with relatively dense distributions of GPS stations). Dense Global Position System (GPS) arrays can be used to invert the terrestrial water-storage anomaly (TWSA) with higher accuracy. However, the uneven distribution of GPS stations greatly limits the application of GPS to derive the TWSA. Aiming to solve this problem, we grid the GPS array using regression to raise the reliability of TWSA inversion. First, the study uses the random forest (RF) model to simulate crustal deformation in unobserved grids. Meanwhile, the new Machine-Learning Loading-Inverted Method (MLLIM) is constructed based on the traditional GPS derived method to raise the truthfulness of TWSA inversion. Second, this research selects southwest China as the study region, the MLLIM and traditional GPS inversion methods are used to derive the TWSA, and the inverted results are contrasted with datasets of the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) Mascon and the Global Land Data Assimilation System (GLDAS) model. The comparison shows that values of Pearson Correlation Coefficient (PCC) between the MLLIM and GRACE and GRACE Follow-On (GRACE-FO) are equal to 0.91 and 0.88, respectively; and the values of R-squared (R2) are equal to 0.76 and 0.65, respectively; the values of PCC and R2 between MLLIM and GLDAS solutions are equal to 0.79 and 0.65. Compared with the traditional GPS inversion, the MLLIM improves PCC and R2 by 8.85% and 7.99% on average, which indicates that the MLLIM can improve the accuracy of TWSA inversion more than the traditional GPS method. Third, this study applies the MLLIM to invert the TWSA in each province of southwest China and combines the precipitation to analyze the change of TWSA in each province. The results are as follows: (1) The spatial distribution of TWSA and precipitation is coincident, which is highlighted in southwest Yunnan and southeast Guangxi; (2) this study compares TWSA of MLLIM with GRACE and GLDAS solutions in each province, which indicates that the maximum value of PCC is as high as 0.86 and 0.94, respectively, which indicates the MLLIM can be used to invert the TWSA in the regions with sparse GPS stations.
