Forest stand height (FSH), or average canopy height, serves as an important indicator for forest monitoring. The information provided about above-ground biomass for greenhouse gas emissions reporting and estimating carbon storage is relevant for reporting for Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+). A novel forest height estimation method utilizing a fusion of backscatter and Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) data from JAXA’s Advanced Land Observing Satellite Phased Array type L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (ALOS PALSAR) is applied to a use case in Savannakhet, Lao. Compared with LiDAR, the estimated height from the fusion method had an RMSE of 4.90 m and an R2 of 0.26. These results are comparable to previous studies using SAR estimation techniques. Despite limitations of data quality and quantity, the Savannakhet, Lao use case demonstrates the applicability of these techniques utilizing L-band SAR data for estimating FSH in tropical forests and can be used as a springboard for use of L-band data from the future NASA-ISRO SAR (NISAR) mission.

In this paper, we build on past efforts with regard to the implementation of an efficient feature tracking algorithm for the mass processing of satellite images. This generic open-source feature tracking routine can be applied to any type of imagery to measure sub-pixel displacements between images. The routine consists of a feature tracking module (autoRIFT) that enhances computational efficiency and a geocoding module (Geogrid) that mitigates problems found in existing geocoding algorithms. When applied to satellite imagery, autoRIFT can run on a grid in the native image coordinates (such as radar or map) and, when used in conjunction with the Geogrid module, on a user-defined grid in geographic Cartesian coordinates such as Universal Transverse Mercator or Polar Stereographic. To validate the efficiency and accuracy of this approach, we demonstrate its use for tracking ice motion by using ESA’s Sentinel-1A/B radar data (seven pairs) and NASA’s Landsat-8 optical data (seven pairs) collected over Greenland’s Jakobshavn Isbræ glacier in 2017. Feature-tracked velocity errors are characterized over stable surfaces, where the best Sentinel-1A/B pair with a 6 day separation has errors in X/Y of 12 m/year or 39 m/year, compared to 22 m/year or 31 m/year for Landsat-8 with a 16-day separation. Different error sources for radar and optical image pairs are investigated, where the seasonal variation and the error dependence on the temporal baseline are analyzed. Estimated velocities were compared with reference velocities derived from DLR’s TanDEM-X SAR/InSAR data over the fast-moving glacier outlet, where Sentinel-1 results agree within 4% compared to 3–7% for Landsat-8. A comprehensive apples-to-apples comparison is made with regard to runtime and accuracy between multiple implementations of the proposed routine and the widely-used “dense ampcor" program from NASA/JPL’s ISCE software. autoRIFT is shown to provide two orders of magnitude of runtime improvement with a 20% improvement in accuracy.

This paper describes an automatic mosaicking algorithm for creating large-scale mosaic maps of forest height. In contrast to existing mosaicking approaches through using SAR backscatter power and/or InSAR phase, this paper utilizes the forest height estimates that are inverted from spaceborne repeat-pass cross-pol InSAR correlation magnitude. By using repeat-pass InSAR correlation measurements that are dominated by temporal decorrelation, it has been shown that a simplified inversion approach can be utilized to create a height-sensitive measure over the whole interferometric scene, where two scene-wide fitting parameters are able to characterize the mean behavior of the random motion and dielectric changes of the volume scatterers within the scene. In order to combine these single-scene results into a mosaic, a matrix formulation is used with nonlinear least squares and observations in adjacent-scene overlap areas to create a self-consistent estimate of forest height over the larger region. This automated mosaicking method has the benefit of suppressing the global fitting error and, thus, mitigating the “wallpapering” problem in the manual mosaicking process. The algorithm is validated over the U.S. state of Maine by using InSAR correlation magnitude data from ALOS/PALSAR and comparing the inverted forest height with Laser Vegetation Imaging Sensor (LVIS) height and National Biomass and Carbon Dataset (NBCD) basal area weighted (BAW) height. This paper serves as a companion work to previously demonstrated results, the combination of which is meant to be an observational prototype for NASA’s DESDynI-R (now called NISAR) and JAXA’s ALOS-2 satellite missions.

This paper describes a novel, simple and efficient approach to estimate forest height over a wide region utilizing spaceborne repeat-pass InSAR correlation magnitude data at L-band. We start from a semi-empirical modification of the RVoG model that characterizes repeat-pass InSAR correlation with large temporal baselines (e.g., 46 days for ALOS) by taking account of the temporal change effect of dielectric fluctuation and random motion of scatterers. By assuming (1) the temporal change parameters and forest backscatter profile/extinction coefficient follow some mean behavior across each inteferogram; (2) there is minimal ground scattering contribution for HV-polarization; and (3) the vertical wavenumber is small, a simplified inversion approach is developed to link the observed HV-polarized InSAR correlation magnitude to forest height and validated using ALOS/PALSAR repeat-pass observations against LVIS lidar heights over the Howland Research Forest in central Maine, US (with RMSE < 4 m at a resolution of 32 hectares). The model parameters derived from this supervised regression are used as the basis for propagating the estimates of forest height to available interferometric pairs for the entire state of Maine, thus creating a state-mosaic map of forest height. The present approach described here serves as an alternative and complementary tool for other PolInSAR inversion techniques when full-polarization data may not be available. This work is also meant to be an observational prototype for NASA’s DESDynI-R (now called NISAR) and JAXA’s ALOS-2 satellite missions.

Airborne aircrafts are dependent on the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), which is susceptible to interference due to the satellite base-station and cooperative communication. Synthetic aperture radar altimeter (SARAL) provides the ability to measure the topographic terrain for matching with Digital Elevation Model (DEM) to achieve positioning without relying on GNSS. However, due to the near-vertical coupling in the delay-Doppler map (DDM), the similarity of DDMs of adjacent apertures is high, and the probability of successful matching is low. To this end, a novel neural network of terrain matching and aircraft positioning is proposed based on the airborne SARAL imagery. The model-driven terrain matching and aircraft positioning network (TMP-Net) is capable of realizing aircraft positioning by utilizing the real-time DDMs to match with the DEM-based DDM references, which are generated by a point-by-point coupling mechanism between the airborne routine and ground terrain DEM. Specifically, the training dataset is established by a numerical simulation method based on a semi-analytical model. Therefore, DEM-based DDM references can be generated by forward deduction when only regional DEM can be obtained. In addition to the model-based DDM generation, feature extraction, and similarity measurement, an aircraft positioning module is added. Three different positioning methods are designed to achieve the aircraft positioning, where three-point weighting exhibits the best performance in terms of positioning accuracy. Due to the fact that both the weighted triplet loss and softmax loss are employed in a cooperative manner, the matching accuracy can be improved and the positioning error can be reduced. Finally, both simulated and measured airborne datasets are used to validate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. Quantitative and qualitative evaluations show the superiority. Haze or cloud always shrouds satellite images, obscuring valuable geographic information for military surveillance, natural calamity surveillance and mineral resource exploration. Satellite image dehazing (SID) provides the possibility for better applications of satellite images. Most of the existing dehazing methods are tailored for natural images and are not very effective for satellite images with non-homogeneous haze since the semantic structure information and inconsistent attenuation are not fully considered. To tackle this problem, this study proposes a hierarchical semantic-guided contextual structure-aware network (SCSNet) for spectral satellite image dehazing. Specifically, a hybrid CNN–Transformer architecture integrated with a hierarchical semantic guidance (HSG) module is presented to learn semantic structure information by synergetically complementing local representation from non-local features. Furthermore, a cross-layer fusion (CLF) module is specially designed to replace the traditional skip connection during the feature decoding stage so as to reinforce the attention to the spatial regions and feature channels with more serious attenuation. The results on the SateHaze1k, RS-Haze, and RSID datasets demonstrated that the proposed SCSNet can achieve effective dehazing and outperforms existing state-of-the-art methods. The retrieval of crop growth status using Global Navigation Satellite System Interferometric Reflectometry (GNSS-IR) has become a major area of interest within the field of vegetation remote sensing in recent years. Using only a single GNSS antenna, it is difficult to determine the crop growth status and soil water content (SWC) in vegetation-covered regions due to plenty of multi-path signals. Based on the empirical mode decomposition and the spectrum difference, this study presents an algorithm that can decompose and separate signals reflected by the soil surface or corn canopy. Because the low-roughness soil surface is isotropic while the corn canopy is anisotropic, the signals reflected by the soil surface have a higher proportion of coherent components than those reflected by the corn canopy. The moduli between the retrieved heights and the actual heights (for the same interval from different satellites) have the least variance. In this study, the signals reflected by the soil surface and the corn canopy are separated using the variance of retrieved heights. When the corn grows taller than the GNSS antenna, the vegetation water content (VWC) of the corn leaves becomes the primary factor affecting the direct signal's intensity, as the leaves obstruct the signal. Hence, the VWC of corn leaves can be calculated through the power attenuation of signals. An experiment performed on a plot of land covered with corn shows that, after multi-GPS-satellite fusion, the correlations between the retrieved corn canopy height, leaf VWC, soil water content (SWC), and in situ data reach 0.94, 0.92, and 0.88, respectively. Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imaging with a non-zero (forward) squint angle is capable of providing a longer time for reaction than that of the broadside mode. However, due to the large squint angle, there will be severe coupling between range and azimuth samples in the echoed data, which is known as the problematic Range Cell Migration (RCM) in the SAR community. Especially when the SAR sensor mounted on an airborne platform encounters unexpected motion deviations/errors, the coupling becomes more complicated, and it is difficult to differentiate the systematic RCM for the SAR Image Formation Processing (IFP) and the non-systematic RCM error to be compensated. To this end, a novel and accurate SAR imaging algorithm is proposed in this paper to facilitate the processing of airborne SAR data collected at a high-squint angle. Firstly, the proposed algorithm is established under a Fast Time-Domain Back-Projection (FTDBP) framework for the SAR IFP. FTDBP paves the way to avoid the complicated processing for the systematic RCM as for the conventional SAR IFP in the Doppler processing manner. It is capable of generating a high-resolution SAR image efficiently under more general geometries and configurations. Secondly, regarding the non-systematic RCM errors, the proposed algorithm realizes the compensation by correcting both the Non-systematic Range Cell Migration (NsRCM), as well as Azimuthal Phase Error (APE) in a coherent manner. It is consequently capable of auto-calibrating the effects of the motion error completely without being dependent on the airborne navigation unit. Finally, both simulated and raw data collected by the airborne squinted SAR are applied to evaluate the proposed algorithm.
