Flash flood is one of the extremely destructive natural disasters in the world. In recent years, extreme rainfall events caused by global climate change have increased, and flash flood disasters are becoming the main types of natural disasters in the world. Due to the characteristics of strong suddenness, complex disaster-causing factors, great difficulty in prediction and forecast, and the lack of historical data, it is difficult to effectively prevent and control flash flood disaster. The early identification technology of flash floods is not only the basis of flash flood disaster prediction and early warning, but also an effective means of flash flood prevention and control. The paper makes a meta-analysis and visual analysis of 475 documents collected by the Web of Science Document Platform in the past 31 years by comprehensively using Citespace, Vosviewer, Origin, etc. We systematically summarize the research progress and development trend of early identification technology of flash flood disasters from five key research subfields: (1) precipitation, (2) sediment, (3) sensitivity analysis, (4) risk assessment, (5) uncertainty analysis. In addition, we analyze and discuss the main problems encountered in the current research of several subfields and put forward some suggestions to provide references for the prevention and control of flash flood disasters. Quantitative precipitation estimation (QPE) plays an important role in meteorology and hydrology. Currently, multichannel Doppler radar image is used for QPE based on some traditional methods like the Z − R relationship, which struggles to capture the complicated non-linear spatial relationship. Encouraged by the great success of using Deep Learning (DL) segmentation networks in medical science and remoting sensing, a UNet-based network named Reweighted Regression Encoder–Decoder Net (RRED-Net) is proposed for QPE in this paper, which can learn more complex non-linear information from the training data. Firstly, wavelet transform (WT) is introduced to alleviate the noise in radar images. Secondly, a wider receptive field is obtained by taking advantage of attention mechanisms. Moreover, a new Regression Focal Loss is proposed to handle the imbalance problem caused by the extreme long-tailed distribution in precipitation. Finally, an efficient feature selection strategy is designed to avoid exhaustion experiments. Extensive experiments on 465 real processes data demonstrate that the superiority of our proposed RRED-Net not only in the threat score (TS) in the severe precipitation (from 17.6% to 39.6%, ≥20 mm/h) but also the root mean square error (RMSE) comparing to the traditional Z-R relationship-based method (from 2.93 mm/h to 2.58 mm/h, ≥20 mm/h), baseline models and other DL segmentation models. The Grain for Green Project (GGP) has considerably improved the vegetation cover of the Loess Plateau, as well as changed the carbon and water coupling process of local vegetation to a certain extent. Water use efficiency (WUE) is a crucial measure for evaluating ecosystem responses to global climate change and is a key indicator of the carbon–water coupling between terrestrial ecosystems and the environment. A comprehensive understanding of the impact of vegetation reconstruction on WUE on the Loess Plateau is of great significance to the vegetation growth and contribution to sustainable of the Loess Plateau. In recent years, scholars have gained a more comprehensive understanding of the distribution and drivers of WUE on the Loess Plateau. However, through the study of carbon and water coupling in the Loess Plateau, it is found that the effects of different vegetation restoration levels on WUE are still to be studied in depth in terms of spatial and temporal heterogeneity and long timeseries. In this paper, we analyzed the trends of Normalized Difference vegetation cover (NDVI) and WUE from 2001 to 2010 and 2011 to 2020, respectively, to research at the WUE of the vegetation in this area in relation to vegetation restoration. It was found that the Loess Plateau's vegetation WUE rose from 2001 to 2020 at a rate of 0.023 g C kg−1 H2O per year, and that the increase from 2011 to 2020 was more significant than the growth from 2000 to 2010. The Loess Plateau's area with a growing trend in vegetation water use rate increased from 77.12% in 2001–2010 to 88.63% in 2011–2020, with the majority of the increased area occurring in the northeastern Inner Mongolia region. After 20 years of the reforestation project, the area where NDVI and WUE increased simultaneously accounted for 71.54% of the Loess Plateau, the area where NDVI increased but WUE decreased accounted for 10.95% of the Loess Plateau, and the area where NDVI increased but WUE decreased accounted for 7.15% of the Loess Plateau. The correlation between temperature precipitation and WUE was not significant for the whole Loess Plateau, further indicating that the increase in vegetation cover was the main reason for the increase in vegetation water efficiency. This paper introduces the Method of Microwave Rainfall Normalization (MMN) for the Global Satellite Mapping of Precipitation (GSMaP) algorithm in its latest version (V05, algorithm version 8), released in December 2021. The method aims to mitigate the discrepancy of GSMaP rainfall estimates among passive microwave (PMW) imagers/sounders (MWIs/MWSs) due to differences in sensor specifications and retrieval algorithms. The basic idea of the MMN module is to calibrate target PMW sensors with reference sensors (the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) Microwave Imager (GMI) and the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) Microwave Imager (TMI)) using the cumulative distribution function (CDF) of the rain rate. Differences between the CDF and normalization table for MWSs are greater than MWIs due to different rain retrieval algorithms. More (less) MWS rainfall is detected over the ocean (land) than GMI rainfall. Matchup rainfall data between GMI and a target PMW sensor are compared to evaluate MMN performance. The monthly mean rainfall and mean bias error were improved for almost all PMW sensors. This paper describes the initial results of precipitation estimates from the Time-Resolved Observations of Precipitation structure and storm Intensity with a Constellation of Smallsats (TROPICS) Millimeter-wave Sounder (TMS) using the Precipitation Retrieval and Profiling Scheme (PRPS). The TROPICS mission consists of a Pathfinder CubeSat and a constellation of six CubeSats, providing a low-cost solution to the frequent sampling of precipitation systems across the Tropics. The TMS instrument is a 12-channel cross-track scanning radiometer operating at frequencies of 91.655 to 204.8 GHz, providing similar resolutions to current passive microwave sounding instruments. These retrievals showcase the potential of the TMS instrument for precipitation retrievals. The PRPS has been modified for use with the TMS using a database based upon observations from current sounding sensors. The results shown here represent the initial postlaunch version of the retrieval scheme, as analyzed for the Pathfinder CubeSat launched on 30 June 2021. In terms of monthly precipitation estimates, the results fall within the mission specifications and are similar in performance to retrievals from other sounding instruments. Precipitation is one of the many important natural factors impacting agriculture and natural resource management. Although statistics have been applied to investigate the non-stationary trend and the unpredictable variances of precipitation under climate change, existing methods usually lack a sound physical basis that can be generally applied in any location and at any time for future extrapolation, especially in tropical areas. Physically, the formation of precipitation is a result of ascending air which reduces air pressure and condenses moisture into drops, either by irregular terrain or atmospheric phenomena (e.g., via frontal lifting). Thus, in this paper, pressure change events (PCEs) will be used as a physical indicator of the stability of atmospheric systems to reveal the impact of temperature on precipitation in the tropical areas of Florida. By using data from both national and regional weather observation networks, this study segments the continuous observation series into PCE sequences for further analysis divided by dry and wet seasons. The results reveal that the frequency and intensity of PCE are highly associated with the occurrences of weather events. Decreasing pressure favors precipitation, and may turn extreme when the temperature and air moisture are sufficient to fuel the process. With similar intensity, decreasing pressure change events (DePCEs) generally bear a higher probability of precipitation (POP) and precipitation depth (PD) than increasing pressure change events (InPCEs). The frequency of alternating between InPCEs and DePCEs is subject to the temperature of the season and climate. Due to the seasonal fluctuations of weather characteristics, such as temperature and relative humidity, the dependence of extreme precipitation on these characteristics can be interpreted via PCE. A 7% increase rate of precipitation vs. temperature rise, determined by the Clausius—Clapeyron (C—C) relationship, can be observed from extreme precipitation with variances in the season and PCE types. Although indicated by other research, active vertical movement of air caused by a phase change in water at the frozen point is not pronounced in Florida. The response patterns of humidity to precipitation also vary by season and PCE types in extreme conditions. In summary, PCEs demonstrate reliable physical evidence of precipitation formation and can better associate the occurrence and intensity of extreme weather with other characteristics. The images acquired by microwave sensors are blurry and have low resolution. On the other hand, the images obtained using infrared/visible sensors are often of higher resolution. In this paper, we develop a data fusion methodology and apply it to enhance the resolution of a microwave image using the data from a collocated infrared/visible sensor. Such an approach takes advantage of the spatial resolution of the infrared instrument and the sensing accuracy of the microwave instrument. The model leverages sparsity in signals and is based on current research in sparse optimization and compressed sensing. We tested our method using a precipitation scene captured with the Advanced Microwave Sounding Unit (AMSU-B) microwave instrument and the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) infrared instrument and compared the results to simultaneous radar observations. High-resolution and accurate precipitation data are essential for hydrological, meteorological, and ecological research at the watershed scale. However, in regions with complex terrain and significant rainfall variability, the limited number of rain gauge stations (RGS) is insufficient, and the spatial resolution of existing satellite precipitation data is too low to capture detailed precipitation patterns at the watershed scale. To address this issue, the downscaling of satellite precipitation products has become an effective method to obtain high-resolution precipitation data. This study proposes a monthly downscaling method based on a random forest model, aiming to improve the resolution of precipitation data in cloudy and rainy regions at mid-to-low latitudes. We combined the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform with a local Python environment, introducing cloud cover characteristics into traditional downscaling variables (latitude, longitude, topography, and vegetation index). The TRMM data were downscaled from 25 km to 1 km, generating high-resolution monthly precipitation data for the Dongting Lake Basin from 2001 to 2019. Furthermore, we analyzed the spatiotemporal variation characteristics of precipitation in the study area. The results show the following: (1) In cloudy and rainy regions, our method improves resolution and detail while maintaining the accuracy of precipitation data; (2) The response of monthly precipitation to environmental variables varies, with cloud cover characteristics contributing more to the downscaling model than vegetation characteristics, helping to overcome the lag effect of vegetation characteristics; and (3) Over the past 20 years, there have been significant seasonal trends in precipitation changes in the study area, with a decreasing trend in winter and spring (January–May) and an increasing trend in summer and autumn (June–December). Understanding the macro and micro characteristics of precipitation in landfall typhoons is crucial to predicting the path and intensity of tropical cyclones by using numerical models. In this study, we use observations from the Global Precipitation Measurement Mission to analyze the microphysics of convection and stratiform precipitation during the landfall of Typhoon Lekima. The statistical results show that the correlation coefficient of the reflectivity factors of the spaceborne and ground-based radars is 0.77 and that the water content detected by the 18.7 GHz low-frequency vertical channel is positively correlated with the intense-precipitation rate. The storm top height is generally consistent with the location of heavy precipitation. The average near-surface precipitation rate and liquid water content of convective precipitation are higher than those of stratiform precipitation. The average mass-weighted raindrop diameter and particle number concentration of convective (stratiform) precipitation at a distance of 2 km above ground level are 1.52 mm (1.29 mm) and 39.52 (36.44, in decibel scale), respectively. Below the melting layer, there is a significant increase in average particle diameter, indicating that the collision aggregation growth process of raindrops is dominant. This paper presents a new and enhanced fusion module for the Multi-Sensor Precipitation Estimator (MPE) that would objectively blend real-time satellite quantitative precipitation estimates (SQPE) with radar and gauge estimates. This module consists of a preprocessor that mitigates systematic bias in SQPE, and a two-way blending routine that statistically fuses adjusted SQPE with radar estimates. The preprocessor not only corrects systematic bias in SQPE, but also improves the spatial distribution of precipitation based on SQPE and makes it closely resemble that of radar-based observations. It uses a more sophisticated radar-satellite merging technique to blend preprocessed datasets, and provides a better overall QPE product. The performance of the new satellite-radar-gauge blending module is assessed using independent rain gauge data over a five-year period between 2003-2007, and the assessment evaluates the accuracy of newly developed satellite-radar-gauge (SRG) blended products versus that of radar-gauge products (which represents MPE algorithm currently used in the NWS (National Weather Service) operations) over two regions: (I) Inside radar effective coverage and (II) immediately outside radar coverage. The outcomes of the evaluation indicate (a) ingest of SQPE over areas within effective radar coverage improve the quality of QPE by mitigating the errors in radar estimates in region I; and (b) blending of radar, gauge, and satellite estimates over region II leads to reduction of errors relative to bias-corrected SQPE. In addition, the new module alleviates the discontinuities along the boundaries of radar effective coverage otherwise seen when SQPE is used directly to fill the areas outside of effective radar coverage. The IMERG data product is an optimal combination of precipitation estimates from the Global Precipitation Mission (GPM), making use of a variety of data types, primarily data from various spaceborne passive instruments. Previous versions of the IMERG product have been extensively validated by comparisons with gauge data and ground-based radars over land. However, IMERG rain rates, especially sub-daily, over open ocean are less validated due to the scarcity of comparison data, particularly with the relatively new Version 07. To address this issue, we consider IMERG V07 30-min data acquired in tropical cyclones over open ocean. We perform two tasks. The first is a straightforward comparison between IMERG precipitation rates and those retrieved from the GPM Dual-frequency Precipitation Radar (DPR). From this, we find that IMERG and DPR are close at low rain rates, while, at high rain rates, IMERG tends to be lower than DPR. The second task is the assessment of IMERG's ability to represent or detect structures commonly seen in tropical cyclones, including the annular structure and concentric eyewalls. For this, we operate on IMERG data with many machine learning algorithms and are able to achieve a 96% classification accuracy, indicating that IMERG does indeed contain TC structural information. The spatiotemporal mean rain rate (MR) can be characterized by the rain frequency (RF) and the conditional rain rate (CR). We computed these parameters for each season using the TMPA 3-hourly, 0.25° gridded data for the 1998–2017 period at a quasi-global scale, 50°N~50°S. For the global long-term average, MR, RF, and CR are 2.83 mm/d, 10.55%, and 25.05 mm/d, respectively. The seasonal time series of global mean RF and CR show significant decreasing and increasing trends, respectively, while MR depicts only a small but significant trend. The seasonal anomaly of RF decreased by 5.29% and CR increased 13.07 mm/d over the study period, while MR only slightly decreased by −0.029 mm/day. The spatiotemporal patterns in MR, RF, and CR suggest that although there is no prominent trend in the total precipitation amount, the frequency of rainfall events becomes smaller and the average intensity of a single event becomes stronger. Based on the co-variability of RF and CR, the paper optimally classifies the precipitation over land and ocean into four categories using K-means clustering. The terrestrial clusters are consistent with the dry and wet climatology, while categories over the ocean indicate high RF and medium CR in the Inter Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) region; low RF with low CR in oceanic dry zones; and low RF and high CR in storm track areas. Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF) analysis was then performed, and these results indicated that the major pattern of MR is characterized by an El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) signal while RF and CR variations are dominated by their trends. Spatial prediction of precipitation with high resolution is a challenging task in regions with strong climate variability and scarce monitoring. For this purpose, the quasi-continuous supply of information from satellite imagery is commonly used to complement in situ data. However, satellite images of precipitation are available at coarse resolutions, and require adequate methods for spatial downscaling and calibration. The objective of this paper is to introduce and evaluate a 2-step spatial downscaling approach for monthly precipitation applied to TRMM 3B43 (from 0.25° 27 km to 5 km resolution), resulting in 5 downscaled products for the period 01-2001/12-2011. The methodology was evaluated in 3 contrasting climatic regions of Ecuador. In step 1, bilinear resampling was applied over TRMM, and used as a reference product. The second step introduces further variability, and consists of four alternative gauge-satellite merging methods: (1) regression with in situ stations, (2) regression kriging with in situ stations, (3) regression with in situ stations and auxiliary variables, and (4) regression kriging with in situ stations and auxiliary variables. The first 2 methods only use the resampled TRMM data set as an independent variable. The last 2 methods enrich these models with auxiliary environmental factors, incorporating atmospheric and land variables. The results showed that no product outperforms the others in every region. In general, the methods with residual kriging correction outperformed the regression models. Regression kriging with situ data provided the best representation in the Coast, while regression kriging with in situ and auxiliary data generated the best results in the Andes. In the Amazon, no product outperformed the resampled TRMM images, probably due to the low density of in situ stations. These results are relevant to enhance satellite precipitation, depending on the availability of in situ data, auxiliary satellite variables and the particularities of the climatic regions. Previous studies have shown that climate change has significant cumulative effects on vegetation growth. However, there remains a gap in understanding the characteristics of cumulative climatic effects on different vegetation types and the underlying driving mechanisms. In this study, using the normalized difference vegetation index data from 1982 to 2015, along with accumulated temperature, precipitation, and solar radiation data, we quantitatively investigated the intra-annual cumulative effects of climatic factors on global vegetation biomes across climatic zones. We also explored the underlying driving mechanisms. The results indicate that precipitation has a longer intra-annual cumulative effect on vegetation, with effects lasting up to 12 months for large percentages of most vegetation biomes. The cumulative effect of solar radiation is mostly concentrated within 0–6 months. Temperature has a shorter cumulative effect, with no significant cumulative effect of temperature on large percentages of tree-type vegetation. Compared to other vegetation types, evergreen broadleaf forests, close shrublands, open shrublands, savannas, and woody savannas exhibit more complex cumulative climatic effects. Each vegetation type shows a weak-to-moderate correlation with accumulated precipitation while exhibiting strong-to-extremely-strong positive correlations with accumulated temperature and accumulated solar radiation. The climate-induced regulations of water, heat, and nutrient, as well as the intrinsic mechanisms of vegetation's tolerance, resistance, and adaptation to climate change, account for the significant heterogeneity of cumulative climatic effects across vegetation biomes in different climatic zones. This study contributes to enriching the theoretical understanding of the relationship between vegetation growth and climate change. The variation of lake water storage is an important indicator for studying both climate change and ecological environment changes. Previous studies have mainly focused on the lake storage changes in recent decades, and predicting future lake storage changes on the Tibetan Plateau under climate change scenarios remains a crucial gap. We addressed this gap by establishing prediction models for water storage changes in nine lakes using historical water storage and climate data from the past 29 years and predicting the water storage changes for the next 80 years under three scenarios based on Phase 6 of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6) data. The Quantile-mapping (QM) method was applied to correct the precipitation data of CMIP6 with assimilated data. The results indicated that the prediction model performed well, with high correlation (R2 > 0.7 for the training set) and low mean absolute error (MSE < 0.1 km3). The results suggest that most lakes will experience a slight increase in water storage until 2050, followed by a rapid rise until 2100 under all three SSP (Shared Socioeconomic Pathways) scenarios, including SSP126, SSP245, and SSP585. By the end of the century, the total projected increase in lake water storage is estimated to be 189.676 ± 16.266 km3, 191.762 ± 10.683 km3, and 186.212 ± 6.441 km3 until 2100, respectively. Temperature and precipitation are crucial indicators for investigating climate changes, necessitating precise measurements for rigorous scientific inquiry. While the Fifth Generation of European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts Atmospheric Reanalysis (ERA5), ERA5 of the Land Surface (ERA5-Land), and China Meteorological Forcing Dataset (CMFD) temperature and precipitation products are widely used worldwide, their suitability for the Altay region of arid and semi-arid areas has received limited attention. Here, we used the Altay region as the study area, utilizing meteorological station data and implementing the residual revision method for temperature and the coefficient revision method for precipitation to rectify inaccuracies in monthly temperature and precipitation records from ERA5-Land, ERA5, and CMFD. We evaluate the accuracy of these datasets before and after correction using bias, Taylor diagrams, and root-mean-square error (RMSE) metrics. Additionally, we employ Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission satellite precipitation data (TRMM) as a benchmark to assess the performance of ERA5-Land, ERA5, and CMFD monthly precipitation before and after correction. The results revealed significant differences in the temperature and precipitation capture capabilities of ERA5-Land, ERA5, and CMFD in the Altay region. Overall, these data exhibit substantial errors and are not directly suitable for scientific research. However, we applied residual and coefficient revision methods. After this revision, ERA5-Land, ERA5, and CMFD showed significantly improved temperature and precipitation capture capabilities, especially for ERA5-Land. In terms of temperature, post-revision-CMFD (CMFDPR) demonstrated better temperature capture capabilities. All three datasets showed weaker performance in mountainous regions compared to plains. Notably, post-revision-ERA5 (ERA5PR) seemed unsuitable for capturing temperature in the Altay region. Concerning rain, CMFDPR, post-revision-ERA5-Land (ERA5-LandPR) and ERA5PR outperformed TRMM in capturing precipitation. CMFDPR and ERA5-LandPR both outperform ERA5PR. In summary, the revision datasets effectively compensated for the sparse distribution of meteorological stations in the Altay region, providing reliable data support for studying climate change in arid and semi-arid areas. Fluvial flooding is one of the most catastrophic natural disasters threatening people's lives and possessions. Flood forecasting systems, which simulate runoff generation and propagation processes, provide information to support flood warning delivery and emergency response. The forecasting models need to be driven by input data and further constrained by historical and real-time observations using batch calibration and/or data assimilation techniques so as to produce relatively accurate and reliable flow forecasts. Traditionally, flood forecasting models are forced, calibrated and updated using in-situ measurements, e.g., gauged precipitation and discharge. The rapid development of hydrologic remote sensing offers a potential to provide additional/alternative forcing and constraint to facilitate timely and reliable forecasts. This has brought increasing interest to exploring the use of remote sensing data for flood forecasting. This paper reviews the recent advances on integration of remotely sensed precipitation and soil moisture with rainfall-runoff models for rainfall-driven flood forecasting. Temperature and precipitation data are crucial for hydrology and meteorology. In 2014, Ecuador started an automatic gauge network which monitors these variables. The measurements are not publicly available. Global gridded datasets from numerical models and remote sensors were previously the only way to obtain measurements for temperature and precipitation. Now that in situ measurements are beginning to be available in significant quantities, we assessed the performance of IMERG, CHIRPS, GLDAS and ERA5 for both temperature and precipitation using the in situ data. We used the Pearson R correlation coefficient, ME (Mean Error), MAE (Mean Absolute Error), and RMSE (Root Mean Square Error). We found that global gridded data were more suited for determining averages over time rather than for giving exact values at specific times for in situ gauges. The Pearson R values increased for all datasets when we used monthly aggregations in place of daily aggregations, suggesting that the monthly values are more correlated than the daily. The Pearson R value for temperature increased from 0.158 to 0.719 for the ERA5 dataset. Additionally, we show the statistical values for each of the three regions in Ecuador. We found that the IMERG and CHIRPS datasets, which contain station data, performed significantly better for both RMSE and MAE. Both IMERG and CHIRPS have a RMSE value a little over 260, whereas ERA5 and GLDAS had values over 300. We discuss the short comings of these datasets as being related to their relatively coarse resolution, lack of in situ data in Ecuador to calibrate against, and the rapidly varying terrain of Ecuador. We recommend using higher temporal and spatial resolution datasets for immediate applications. We recommend repeating this analysis in the future when more automatic gauges and longer time periods are available to facilitate a more detailed analysis which is presently not possible. Precipitation is an essential element in earth system research, which greatly benefits from the emergence of Satellite Precipitation Products (SPPs). Therefore, assessment of the accuracy of the SPPs is necessary both scientifically and practically. The Integrated Multi-Satellite Retrievals for GPM (IMERG) is one of the most widely used SPPs in the scientific community. However, there is a lack of comprehensive evaluation for the performance of the newly released IMERG Version 07, which is essential for determining its effectiveness and reliability in precipitation estimation. In this study, we compare the IMERG V07 Final Run (V07_FR) with its predecessor IMERG V06_FR across scales from January 2016 to December 2020 over the globe (cross-compare their similarities and differences) and a focused study on mainland China (validate against 2481 rain gauges). The results show that: (1) Globally, the annual mean precipitation of V07_FR increases 2.2% compared to V06_FR over land but decreases 5.8% over the ocean. The two SPPs further exhibit great differences as indicated by the Critical Success Index (CSI = 0.64) and the Root Mean Squared Difference (RMSD = 3.42 mm/day) as compared to V06_FR to V07_FR. (2) Over mainland China, V06_FR and V07_FR detect comparable precipitation annually. However, the Probability of Detection (POD) improves by 5.0%, and the RMSD decreases by 3.7% when analyzed by grid cells. Further, the POD (+0%~+6.1%) and CSI (+0%~+8.8%) increase and the RMSD (−11.1%~0%) decreases regardless of the sub-regions. (3) Under extreme rainfall rates, V07_FR measures 4.5% lower extreme rainfall rates than V06_FR across mainland China. But V07_FR tends to detect more accurate extreme precipitation at both daily and event scales. Earth system models (ESMs) are important tools for assessing the historical characteristics and predicting the future characteristics of precipitation, yet the quantitative understanding of how these land–atmospheric coupling models perform in simulating precipitation characteristics remains limited. This study conducts a comprehensive evaluation of precipitation changes simulated by 43 ESMs in CMIP5 and 32 ESMs in CMIP6 in Arid Central Asia (ALL) and its two sub-regions for 1959–2005 with reference to Climate Research Unit (CRU) data, and predicts precipitation changes for 2054–2100. Our analyses suggest the following: (a) no single model consistently outperformed the others in all aspects of simulated precipitation variability (annual averages, long-term trends, and climatological monthly patterns); (b) the CMIP5 and CMIP6 model simulations tended to overestimate average annual precipitation for most of the ALL region, especially in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of China (XJ); (c) most model simulations projected a stronger increasing trend in average annual precipitation; (d) although all the model simulations reasonably captured the climatological monthly precipitation, there was an underestimation; (e) compared to CMIP5, most CMIP6 model simulations exhibited an enhanced capacity to simulate precipitation across all aspects, although discrepancies persisted in individual sub-regions; (f) it was confirmed that the multi-model ensemble mean (MME) provides a more accurate representation of the three aspects of precipitation compared to the majority of single-model simulations. Lastly, the values of precipitation predicted by the more efficient models across the ALL region and its sub-regions under the different scenarios showed an increasing trend in most seasons. Regional climate change affects the state of inland water bodies and their water balance, which is determined by a number of hydrometeorological and hydrogeological factors. An integral characteristic of changes in the water balance is the behavior of the level of lakes and reservoirs, which not only largely determines the physical and ecological state of water bodies, but also significantly affects the coastal infrastructure and socio-economic development of the region. This paper investigates the interannual variability of the level of the Ladoga and Onega lakes, the largest lakes in Europe located in the northwest of Russia, according to satellite altimetry data for 1993–2020. For this purpose, we used three specialized altimetry databases: DAHITI, G-REALM, and HYDROWEB. Water level data from these altimetry databases were compared with in-situ records at water level gauge stations. Information on air temperature (1945–2019) and precipitation (1966–2019) acquired at three meteostations located at Ladoga and Onega lakes was used to investigate interannual trends in the regional climate change. A new dual-frequency Doppler polarimetric cloud radar (DDCR), working at 35-GHz (Ka-band radar, wavelength: 8.6 mm) and 94-GHz (W-band radar, wavelength: 3.2 mm) frequencies, has been in operation at Yangbajing Observatory on the Tibetan Plateau (China) for more than a year at the time of writing. Calculations and field observations show that the DDCR has a high detection sensitivity of −39.2 dBZ at 10 km and −33 dBZ at 10 km for the 94-GHz radar and 35-GHz radar, respectively. The radar reflectivity measured by the two radars illustrates different characteristics for different types of cloud: for precipitation, the attenuation caused by liquid cloud droplets is obviously more serious for the 94-GHz radar than the 35-GHz radar (the difference reaches 40 dB in some cases), and the 94-GHz radar lost signals due to serious attenuation by heavy rainfall; while for clouds dominated by ice crystals where the attenuation significantly weakens, the 94-GHz radar shows better detection ability than the 35-GHz radar. Observations in the Tibetan region show that the 35-GHz radar is prone to missing cloud near the edge, such as the cloud-top portion, resulting in underestimation of the cloud-top height (CTH). Statistical analysis based on one year of observations shows that the mean CTH measured by the 94-GHz radar in the Tibetan region is approximately 600 m higher than that measured by the 35-GHz radar. The analysis in this paper shows that the DDCR, with its dual-frequency design, provides more valuable information than simpler configurations, and will therefore play an important role in improving our understanding of clouds and precipitation in the Tibetan region. Precipitation fluctuations in the Pearl River Basin (PRB) have a significant impact on river runoff, causing huge economic losses and casualties. However, future precipitation variations in the PRB remain unclear. Therefore, we explored the projected changes in precipitation in the PRB based on the coupled model intercomparison project phase 6 (CMIP6) model via three shared socio-economic pathways scenarios (SSP1-2.6, SSP2-4.5, and SSP5-8.5). In our study, the optimal ensemble of global climate models in the PRB was identified using the comprehensive rating index (CRI), which is based on climatology, spatial variation, and interannual variability, and it was used to analyze potential precipitation changes in the basin in the period 2025–2100. The results showed that the CMIP6 models underestimated precipitation in the PRB; the consistency between the observations and the multi-model ensemble mean of the four best models was higher than those of any other ensembles, and the CRI value was highest (0.92). The annual precipitation in the PRB shows a significant increasing trend under three scenarios from 2025 to 2100 (p < 0.01), with the highest rate of precipitation increase being seen under the high-emission scenario. By the end of the 21st century, the regional mean precipitation in the PRB will increase by 13%, 9.4%, and 20.1% under SSP1-2.6, SSP2-4.5, and SSP5-8.5 scenarios, respectively. Spatially, the entire basin is projected to become wetter, except for a slight decrease of less than 6% in the central part of the basin and the Pearl River Delta in the near term in the 21st century, and the highest increases are projected to occur in the Xijiang River basin. The widely-distributed altitude effect of stable isotopes in meteoric water, i.e., the negative correlation between stable hydrogen (or oxygen) isotope compositions and altitude, is the theoretical basis of isotope paleoaltimetry in climate proxies. However, as many recent local observations have indicated, the inverse altitude effect (IAE) in meteoric water does exist, and the regime controlling IAE is still unclear on a global scale. Based on a remote sensing product of the Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer (IASI), we examined the global frequency of IAE in water vapor isotopes, and the possible influences on isotopes in precipitation and climate proxies. According to the satellite-based δD values in water vapor at 2950 m and 4220 m above sea level, frequent IAEs are observed on a daily scale in North Africa, West and Central Asia, and North America, and IAEs are more likely to occur during the daytime than during the nighttime. We also converted water vapor δD to precipitation δD via equilibrium fractionation and then analyzed the potential presence of IAE in precipitation, which is more associated with climate proxies, and found that the spatial and temporal patterns of water vapor can be transferred to the precipitation. In addition, different thresholds of δD difference were also tested to understand the impact of random errors. Drought monitoring ensures the Yangtze River Basin's social economy and agricultural production. Developing a comprehensive index with high monitoring precision is essential to enhance the accuracy of drought management strategies. This study proposes the standardized comprehensive drought index (SCDI) using a novel approach that utilizes the joint distribution of C-vine copula to effectively combine three critical drought factors: precipitation, NDVI, and runoff. The study analyzes the reliability and effectiveness of the SCDI in detecting drought events through quantitative indicators and assesses its applicability in the Yangtze River Basin. The findings are as follows: (1) The SCDI is a highly reliable and applicable drought index. Compared to traditional indices like the SPI, VCI, and SRI, it has a consistency rate of over 67% and can detect drought events in more sensitive months by over 51%. It has a low false negative rate of only 2% and a false positive rate of 0%, making it highly accurate. The SCDI is also applicable to all the third-level sub-basins of the Yangtze River Basin, making it a valuable tool for regional drought monitoring. (2) The time lag effect of the NDVI can affect the sensitivity of the SCDI. When the NDVI time series data are shifted forward by one month, the sensitivity of the SCDI in detecting agricultural drought improves from 47.8% to 53%. (3) The SDCI can assist in monitoring drought patterns in the Yangtze River Basin. From 2001 to 2018, the basin saw fluctuations in drought intensity, with the worst in December 2008. Precipitation is a major component of the water cycle. Accurate and reliable estimation of precipitation is essential for various applications. Generally, there are three main types of precipitation products: satellite based, reanalysis, and ground measurements from rain gauge stations. Each type has its advantages and disadvantages. Recent efforts have been made to develop various merging methods to improve precipitation estimates by combining multiple precipitation products. This study evaluated for the first time the performance of the random forest-based merging procedure (RF-MEP) method in enhancing the accuracy of daily precipitation estimates in Chongqing city, China with a complex terrain and sparse observational data. The RF-MEP method was used to merge three widely used gridded precipitation products (CHIRPS, ERA5-Land, and GPM IMERG) with ground measurements from a limited number of rain gauge stations to produce the merged precipitation dataset. Eight stations (approximately 70% of the available stations) were used to train the RF-MEP approach, while four stations (30%) were used for independent testing. Various statistical metrics were employed to assess the performance of the merged precipitation dataset and the three existing precipitation products against the ground measurements. Our results demonstrated that the RF-MEP approach significantly enhances the accuracy of daily precipitation estimates, surpassing the performance of the individual precipitation products and two other merging methods (the simple linear regression model and the simple averaging). Among the three existing products, ERA5-Land exhibited the best performance in capturing daily precipitation, followed by GPM IMERG, while CHIRPS performed the worst. Regarding precipitation intensity, all three existing products and the RF-MEP merged dataset performed well in capturing light precipitation events with an intensity of less than 1 mm/day, which accounts for the majority (more than 70%) of occurrences. However, all datasets showed rather poor capability in capturing precipitation events beyond 1 mm/day, with the worst performance observed for extreme heavy precipitation events exceeding 50 mm/day. The RF-MEP approach significantly improves the detection ability for all precipitation intensities, except for the most extreme intensity (>50 mm/day), where only marginal improvement is observed. Analysis of the spatial pattern of precipitation estimates and the temporal bias of daily precipitation estimates further confirms the superior performance of the RF-MEP merged precipitation dataset over the three existing products. This research investigates Southwest Vortex (SWV) events in China's Sichuan Basin using Fengyun-4A (FY-4A) and Global Precipitation Mission (GPM) observations. We selected representative cloud systems and precipitation cases, divided into developing, mature, and dissipating stages. Detailed analysis revealed critical characteristics of precipitation cloud systems at each stage. Our findings reveal that (1) during the SWV's developing and mature stages, a high concentration of water particles and ice crystals stimulates precipitation. In contrast, the dissipating stage is marked by fewer mixed-phase and ice particles, reducing precipitation area and intensity. (2) Near-surface precipitation in all stages is predominantly liquid, with a bright band of around 5.5 km. At the same time, stratiform precipitation is dominant in each life stage. Stratiform precipitation remains dominant throughout the life stages of the SWV, with localized convective activity evident in the developing and mature stages. (3) Mature stage particles, characterized by a configuration of 1.0–1.2 mm Dm and 31–35 dBNW (dBNW = 10log10NW), contribute significantly to near-surface precipitation. The Cloud Top Height (CTH) serves as an indicator of convective intensity and assists in characterizing raindrop concentration. These findings considerably enhance routine observations, advance our understanding of SWV events, and propose a novel approach for conducting refined observational experiments. Drought is one of the most complex and least-understood environmental disasters that can trigger environmental, societal, and economic problems. To accurately assess the drought conditions in the Yellow River Basin, this study reconstructed the Land Surface Temperature (LST) using the Annual Temperature Cycle (ATC) model and the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI). The Temperature Condition Index (TCI), Vegetation Condition Index (VCI), Vegetation Health Index (VHI), and Temperature-Vegetation Drought Index (TVDI), which are four typical remote sensing drought indices, were calculated. Then, the air temperature, precipitation, and soil moisture data were used to evaluate the applicability of each drought index to different land types. Finally, this study characterized the spatial and temporal patterns of drought in the Yellow River Basin from 2003 to 2019. The results show that: (1) Using the LST reconstructed by the ATC model to calculate the drought index can effectively improve the accuracy of drought monitoring. In most areas, the reconstructed TCI, VHI, and TVDI are more reliable for monitoring drought conditions than the unreconstructed VCI. (2) The four drought indices (TCI, VCI, VH, TVDI) represent the same temporal and spatial patterns throughout the study area. However, in some small areas, the temporal and spatial patterns represented by different drought indices are different. (3) In the Yellow River Basin, the drought level is highest in the northwest and lowest in the southwest and southeast. The dry conditions in the Yellow River Basin were stable from 2003 to 2019. The results in this paper provide a basis for better understanding and evaluating the drought conditions in the Yellow River Basin and can guide water resources management, agricultural production, and ecological protection of this area. Evaluating satellite ability in capturing sudden natural disasters such as heavy snowstorms is a topic of societal interest. This paper presents a rapid qualitative analysis of an intense snowfall in Madrid using data from the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) mission, specifically the GPM IMERG (Integrated Multi-satellitE Retrievals for GPM) Late Precipitation L3 Half Hourly 0.1° × 0.1° V06 estimates of precipitation (IMERG-Late), and Sentinel-2 imagery. The main research question addressed is the consistency of ground observations, model outputs and satellite data, a topic of major interest for an appropriate and timely societal response to severe weather episodes. Indeed, the choice of the 'Late' product over the IMERG 'Final' or other GPM datasets was motivated by the availability of data for near real-time response to the storm. Additionally, the 30-min temporal resolution of the product would in principle allow for a detailed analysis of the dynamic processes involved in the snowstorm. Using several complementary data sources, it is shown that optical remote sensing sensors (Sentinel) add value to existing ground data and that is invaluable for rapid response to severe meteorological events such as Filomena. Regarding the GPM precipitation radar, the sampling of the GPM-core satellite was insufficient to provide the IMERG algorithm with enough quality data to correctly represent the actual sequence of precipitation. Without corrections, the total precipitation differs from observations by a factor of two. The difficulties of retrieving precipitation with radiometers over snow-covered surfaces was a major factor for the mismatch. Thus, the calibrated precipitation product did not fully capture the historic storm, and neither did the IR-based element of the IMERG-Late product, which is a neural network merging of microwave and infrared data. It follows that increased temporal resolution of spaceborne microwave sensors and improved retrieval of precipitation from radiometers are critical in order to provide a complete account of these sorts of extreme, significant, short-duration cases. Otherwise, the high-quality, radar and radiometer data feeding the high temporal resolution algorithms simply slip through the grasp of the ascending and descending orbits, leaving little quality data to be interpolated into successive overpasses. With the improvement in microwave radar technology, spaceborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is widely used to observe the tropical cyclone (TC) wind field. Based on European Space Agency Sentinel-1 Interferometric Wide swath (IW) mode imagery, this paper evaluates the correlation between vertical transmitting–horizontal receiving (VH) polarization signals and extreme ocean surface wind speeds (>40 m/s) under strong TC conditions. A geophysical model function (GMF) Sentinel-1 IW mode wind retrieval model after noise removal (S1IW.NR) was proposed, according to the SAR images of nine TCs and collocated stepped frequency microwave radiometer (SFMR) and soil moisture active passive (SMAP) radiometer wind speed measurements. Through curve fitting and regression correction, the new GMF exploits the relationships between VH-polarization normalized radar cross section, incident angle, and wind speed in each sub-swath and covers wind speeds up to 74 m/s. Based on collocated SAR and SFMR measurements of four TCs, the new GMF was validated in the wind speed range from 2 to 53 m/s. Results show that the correlation coefficient, bias, and root mean squared error were 0.89, −0.89 m/s, and 4.13 m/s, respectively, indicating that extreme winds can be retrieved accurately by the new model. In addition, we investigated the relationship between the S1IW.NR wind retrieval bias and the SFMR-measured rain rate. The S1IW.NR model tended to overestimate wind speeds under high rain rates. This paper describes the Passive microwave Neural network Precipitation Retrieval algorithm for climate applications (PNPR-CLIM), developed with funding from the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S), implemented by ECMWF on behalf of the European Union. The algorithm has been designed and developed to exploit the two cross-track scanning microwave radiometers, AMSU-B and MHS, towards the creation of a long-term (2000–2017) global precipitation climate data record (CDR) for the ECMWF Climate Data Store (CDS). The algorithm has been trained on an observational dataset built from one year of MHS and GPM-CO Dual-frequency Precipitation Radar (DPR) coincident observations. The dataset includes the Fundamental Climate Data Record (FCDR) of AMSU-B and MHS brightness temperatures, provided by the Fidelity and Uncertainty in Climate data records from Earth Observation (FIDUCEO) project, and the DPR-based surface precipitation rate estimates used as reference. The combined use of high quality, calibrated and harmonized long-term input data (provided by the FIDUCEO microwave brightness temperature Fundamental Climate Data Record) with the exploitation of the potential of neural networks (ability to learn and generalize) has made it possible to limit the use of ancillary model-derived environmental variables, thus reducing the model uncertainties' influence on the PNPR-CLIM, which could compromise the accuracy of the estimates. The PNPR-CLIM estimated precipitation distribution is in good agreement with independent DPR-based estimates. A multiscale assessment of the algorithm's performance is presented against high quality regional ground-based radar products and global precipitation datasets. The regional and global three-year (2015–2017) verification analysis shows that, despite the simplicity of the algorithm in terms of input variables and processing performance, the quality of PNPR-CLIM outperforms NASA GPROF in terms of rainfall detection, while in terms of rainfall quantification they are comparable. The global analysis evidences weaknesses at higher latitudes and in the winter at mid latitudes, mainly linked to the poorer quality of the precipitation retrieval in cold/dry conditions. Precipitation is a key aspect of the climate system. In this paper, the dependability of five satellite precipitation products (TRMM [Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission] 3BV42, PERSIANN [Precipitation Estimation from Remotely Sensed Information using Artificial Neural Networks] CDR, GSMaP [Global Satellite Mapping of Precipitation] RENALYSIS, CMORPH [Climate Prediction Center's morphing technique] BLD and CMORPH&lowbar;RAW) were compared with in situ measurements over China for the period of 2005 to 2013. To completely evaluate these precipitation products, the annual, seasonal and monthly precipitation averages were calculated. Overall, the Huaihe River and Qinlin mountains are shown to have heavy precipitation to the southeast and lighter precipitation to the northwest. The comparison results indicate that Gauge correction (CMORPH&lowbar;BLD) improves the quality of the original satellite products (CMORPH&lowbar;RAW), resulting in the higher correlation coefficient (CC), the low relative bias (BIAS) and root mean square error (RMSE). Over China, the GSMaP&lowbar;RENALYSIS outperforms other products and shows the highest CC (0.91) and lowest RMSE (0.85 mm/day) and all products except for PERSIANN&lowbar;CDR exhibit underestimation. GSMaP&lowbar;RENALYSIS gives the highest of probability of detection (81%), critical success index (63%) and lowest false alarm ratio (36%) while TRMM3BV42 gives the highest of frequency bias index (1.00). Over Tibetan Plateau, CMORPH&lowbar;RAW demonstrates the poorest performance with the biggest BIAS (4.2 mm/month) and lowest CC (0.22) in December 2013. GSMaP&lowbar;RENALYSIS displays quite consistent with in situ measurements in summer. However, GSMaP&lowbar;RENALYSIS and CMORPH&lowbar;RAWunderestimate precipitation over South China. This study investigates the effect of mesoscale eddies on air–sea heat and fresh water exchange in the tropical Atlantic Ocean (TAO) using 8 years of satellite altimetry data, combined with sea surface temperature (SST), latent and sensible heat fluxes (LHF and SHF), infrared fluxes (IRF) and precipitation (PR) data. Results indicate that approximately ∼40% of cyclonic eddies contribute to warm SST anomalies, and ∼40% of anticyclonic eddies contribute to cold SST anomalies. Eddies were found to play a role in the variability in LHF, SHF and IRF, contributing 10–35% of their total variability, with the largest contributions observed beneath the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) and frontal SST areas. Composite analysis of SST and heat flux anomalies over eddies suggested that the anomalies created through horizontal advection processes may not significantly impact the overall LHF, SHF and IRF over eddies, contrary to vertical processes. Despite a lack of clear correlation between heat flux and PR anomalies over eddies in the TAO, significant correlations were found beneath the ITCZ, suggesting that eddies may impact both heat fluxes and PR in the ITCZ region. SM2RAIN is a well-established methodology for estimating precipitation from satellite or observed soil moisture and it has been applied as a complementary approach to conventional precipitation monitoring methods. However, satellite soil moisture retrievals are usually subject to various biases and limited number of retrievals (and therefore large intervals) in remote areas, such as the Tibetan Plateau (TP), and little is known about their potential impacts on precipitation estimation. This study seeks to quantify the uncertainties in Soil Moisture Active and Passive (SMAP) soil moisture estimated precipitation through the commonly used SM2RAIN by referring to in situ soil moisture observations from the central Tibetan Plateau soil moisture network. The estimated precipitation is evaluated against rain gauge observations. Additional attention is paid to different orbits of the SMAP retrievals. Results show that the original SM2RAIN algorithm tends to underestimate the precipitation amount in the central TP when using SMAP soil moisture retrievals as input. The retrieval accuracy and sampling interval of SMAP soil moisture from ascending (descending) orbits each count for 1.04 mm/5 d (−0.18 mm/5 d) and 1.67 mm/5 d (0.72 mm/5 d) of estimated precipitation uncertainties as represented by root mean square error. Besides, the descending product of SMAP with a relatively less sampling interval and higher retrieval accuracy outperforms the ascending one in estimating precipitation, and the combination of both two orbits does add value to the overall SM2RAIN estimation. This study is expected to provide guidance for future applications of SM2RAIN-derived precipitation. Meanwhile, more reliable SM2RAIN precipitation estimations are desired when using higher quality satellite soil moisture products with better retrieval accuracy and smaller intervals. Obtaining precipitation estimates with high resolution and high accuracy is critically important for regional meteorological, hydrological, and other applications. Although satellite precipitation products can provide precipitation fields at various scales, their applications are limited by the relatively coarse spatial resolution and low accuracy. In this study, we propose a multi-source merging approach for generating accurate and high-resolution precipitation fields on a daily time scale. Specifically, a random effects eigenvector spatial filtering (RESF) method was first applied to downscale satellite precipitation datasets. The RESF method, together with Kriging, was then applied to merge the downscaled satellite precipitation products with station observations. The results were compared against observations and a data fusion dataset, the Multi-Source Weighted-Ensemble Precipitation (MSWEP). It was shown that the estimates of the proposed method significantly outperformed the individual satellite precipitation product, reducing the average value of mean absolute error (MAE) by 52%, root mean square error (RMSE) by 63%, and improving the mean value of Kling–Gupta efficiency (KGE) by 157%, respectively. Daily precipitation estimates exhibited similar spatial patterns to the MSWEP products, and were more accurate in almost all cases, with a 42% reduction in MAE, 46% reduction in RMSE, and 79% improvement in KGE. Accurate precipitation forecasting is challenging, especially on the sub-seasonal to seasonal scale (14–90 days) which mandates the bias correction. Quantile mapping (QM) has been employed as a universal method of precipitation bias correction as it is effective in correcting the distribution attributes of mean and variance, but neglects the correlation between the model and observation data and has computing inefficiency in large-scale applications. In this study, a quantile mapping of matching precipitation threshold by time series (MPTT-QM) method was proposed to tackle these problems. The MPTT-QM method was applied to correct the FGOALS precipitation forecasts on the 14-day to 90-day lead times for the Pearl River Basin (PRB), taking the IMERG-final product as the observation. MPTT-QM was justified by comparing it with the original QM method in terms of precipitation accumulation and hydrological simulations. The results show that MPTT-QM not only improves the spatial distribution of precipitation but also effectively preserves the temporal change, with a better precipitation detection ability. Moreover, the MPTT-QM-corrected hydrological modeling has better performance in runoff simulations than the QM-corrected modeling, with significantly increased KGE metrics ranging from 0.050 to 0.693. In this paper, we present a state-of-the-art precipitation estimation framework which leverages advances in satellite remote sensing as well as Deep Learning (DL). The framework takes advantage of the improvements in spatial, spectral and temporal resolutions of the Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) onboard the GOES-16 platform along with elevation information to improve the precipitation estimates. The procedure begins by first deriving a Rain/No Rain (R/NR) binary mask through classification of the pixels and then applying regression to estimate the amount of rainfall for rainy pixels. A Fully Convolutional Network is used as a regressor to predict precipitation estimates. The network is trained using the non-saturating conditional Generative Adversarial Network (cGAN) and Mean Squared Error (MSE) loss terms to generate results that better learn the complex distribution of precipitation in the observed data. Common verification metrics such as Probability Of Detection (POD), False Alarm Ratio (FAR), Critical Success Index (CSI), Bias, Correlation and MSE are used to evaluate the accuracy of both R/NR classification and real-valued precipitation estimates. Statistics and visualizations of the evaluation measures show improvements in the precipitation retrieval accuracy in the proposed framework compared to the baseline models trained using conventional MSE loss terms. This framework is proposed as an augmentation for PERSIANN-CCS (Precipitation Estimation from Remotely Sensed Information using Artificial Neural Network- Cloud Classification System) algorithm for estimating global precipitation.

As one of the most important geographical units affected by global climate change, lakes are sensitive to climatic changes and are considered "indicators" of climate and the environment. In this study, changes in the spatial-temporal characteristics of the water levels of 204 global major lakes are systematically analyzed using satellite altimetry data (Hydroweb product) from 2002 to 2010. Additionally, the responses of the major global lake levels to climatic fluctuations are analyzed using Global Land Surface Assimilation System (GLDAS) data (temperature and precipitation). The results show that the change rates of most global lakes exceed 0, which means that the lake levels of these lakes are rising. The change rates of the lake levels are between -0.3~0.3 m/a, which indicates that the rate of change in the water-level of most lakes is not obvious. A few lakes have a particularly sharp change rate, between -5.84~-2 m/a or 0.7~1.87 m/a. Lakes with increasing levels are mainly located in the mountain and plateau regions, and the change rates in the coastal highlands are more evident. The global temperatures rise by a change rate of 0.0058 °C/a, while the global precipitation decreases by a change rate of -0.6697 mm/a. However, there are significant regional differences in both temperature and precipitation. In addition, the impact of precipitation on the water level of lakes is significant and straightforward, while the impact of temperature is more complex. This study aims to investigate how changes in meteorological indicators affect groundwater resources, and hence to predict groundwater levels using these indicators, particularly in regions experiencing drought and subsidence. Precipitation, temperature, evapotranspiration and precipitable water vapor (PWV) are important meteorological parameters to predict groundwater levels. Two subsidence areas with different weather conditions were selected to conduct a comprehensive study on the effect of temperature and precipitation on groundwater level changes. The correct locations of the two subsidence areas were determined by analyzing Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) images of Sentinel-1A using the small baseline subset algorithm. The interferograms were processed to correct tropospheric effects using the advanced integration method. Specifying the exact locations of the two areas, the meteorological parameters were downscaled using the Statistical DownScaling Model (SDSM), synoptic observations, meteorological data, and the General Circulation Model (GCM). An Artificial Neural Network (ANN) was then employed to predict the groundwater level changes as a function of meteorological data, including Global Positioning System (GPS)-based PWV and the evapotranspiration index. The trained ANN, along with the downscaled meteorological indicators, was used to predict groundwater level changes over two time periods. In the first period, the prediction was performed over the current years to investigate the performance of the method using the available data, whereas in the second period, the prediction was performed for the coming years, up until 2030. The results confirmed the high performance of the prediction algorithm, and the importance of including PWV and evapotranspiration in groundwater level predictions. The Pearson correlation coefficient was used to check the relationship between groundwater level changes and meteorological variables. The statistical significance of these coefficients was tested at the significance level α = 0.05 . In more than 80% of the cases, the correlation coefficients were statistically significant, reaching more than 0.70 in some of the months. Aerosol concentration, size and composition are fundamental in hydrometeor formation processes. Meteorological models often use prescribed aerosol concentrations and a single substance. In this study, we analyze the role of aerosol concentration, acting both as CCN and IN, in the development of precipitation in a mixed phase system in numerical weather simulations. To this end, Storm Filomena was selected as the case study. In such a mixed-phase system, the coexistence of supercooled water with ice crystals, as well as the particular existence of a thermal inversion, led to the formation of precipitation in the form of rain, snow and graupel. Several high resolution experiments varying the fixed background aerosol concentration as well as a simulation with an interactive aerosol calculation were performed by means of the WRF-Chem model, using the same physics suite, domain and driving conditions. Results show that the total precipitation remains basically unaltered, with maximum changes of 5%; however, the production of snow is heavily modified. The simulation with maximum prescribed aerosol concentration produced 27% more snow than the interactive aerosol simulation, and diminished the graupel (74%) and rain production (28%). This redistribution of precipitation is mainly linked to the fact that under fixed ice crystal population the variation of aerosol concentration translates into changes in the liquid water content and droplet size and number concentration, thus altering the efficiency of precipitation production. In addition, while modifying the prescribed aerosol concentration produces the same precipitation pattern with the concentration modulating the precipitation amount, interactive aerosol calculation leads to a different precipitation pattern due to the spatial and temporal variability induced in the dynamical aerosol distribution. In this paper, precipitation estimates derived from the Italian ground radar network (IT GR) are used in conjunction with Spinning Enhanced Visible and InfraRed Imager (SEVIRI) measurements to develop an operational oriented algorithm (RAdar INfrared Blending algorithm for Operational Weather monitoring (RAINBOW)) able to provide precipitation pattern and intensity. The algorithm evaluates surface precipitation over five geographical boxes (in which the study area is divided). It is composed of two main modules that exploit a second-degree polynomial relationship between the SEVIRI brightness temperature at 10.8 µm TB10.8 and the precipitation rate estimates from IT GR. These relationships are applied to each acquisition of SEVIRI in order to provide a surface precipitation map. The results, based on a number of case studies, show good performance of RAINBOW when it is compared with ground reference (precipitation rate map from interpolated rain gauge measurements), with high Probability of Detection (POD) and low False Alarm Ratio (FAR) values, especially for light to moderate precipitation range. At the same time, the mean error (ME) values are about 0 mmh−1, while root mean square error (RMSE) is about 2 mmh−1, highlighting a limited variability of the RAINBOW estimations. The precipitation retrievals from RAINBOW have been also compared with the European Organization for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT) Satellite Application Facility on Support to Operational Hydrology and Water Management (H SAF) official microwave (MW)/infrared (IR) combined product (P-IN-SEVIRI). RAINBOW shows better performances than P-IN-SEVIRI, in terms of both detection and estimates of precipitation fields when they are compared to the ground reference. RAINBOW has been designed as an operational product, to provide complementary information to that of the national radar network where the IT GR coverage is absent, or the quality (expressed in terms of Quality Index (QI)) of the RAINBOW estimates is low. West Africa represents a wide gradient of climates, extending from tropical conditions along the Guinea Coast to the dry deserts of the south Sahara, and it has some of the lowest income, most vulnerable populations on the planet, which increases catastrophic impacts of low and high frequency climate variability. This paper investigates low and high frequency climate variability in West African monthly and seasonal precipitation and reference evapotranspiration from the early 1980s to 2016. We examine the impact of those trends and how they interact with payouts from index insurance products. Understanding low and high frequency variability in precipitation and reference evapotranspiration at these scales can provide insight into trends during periods critical to agricultural performance across the region. For index insurance, it is important to identify low-frequency variability, which can result in radical departures between designed/planned and actual insurance payouts, especially in the later part of a 30-year period, a common climate analysis period. We find that evaporative demand and precipitation are not perfect substitutes for monitoring crop deficits and that there may be space to use both for index insurance design. We also show that low yields—aligned with the need for insurance payouts—can be predicted using classification trees that include both precipitation and reference evapotranspiration. Near real-time precipitation is essential to many applications. In Africa, the lack of dense rain-gauge networks and ground weather radars makes the use of satellite precipitation products unavoidable. Despite major progresses in estimating precipitation rate from remote sensing measurements over the past decades, satellite precipitation products still suffer from quantitative uncertainties and biases compared to ground data. Consequently, almost all precipitation products are provided in two modes: a real-time mode (also called early-run or raw product) and a corrected mode (also called final-run, adjusted or post-processed product) in which ground precipitation measurements are integrated in algorithms to correct for bias, generally at a monthly timescale. This paper describes a new methodology to provide a near-real-time precipitation product based on satellite precipitation and soil moisture measurements. Recent studies have shown that soil moisture intrinsically contains information on past precipitation and can be used to correct precipitation uncertainties. The PrISM (Precipitation inferred from Soil Moisture) methodology is presented and its performance is assessed for five in situ rainfall measurement networks located in Africa in semi-arid to wet areas: Niger, Benin, Burkina Faso, Central Africa, and East Africa. Results show that the use of SMOS (Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity) satellite soil moisture measurements in the PrISM algorithm most often improves the real-time satellite precipitation products, and provides results comparable to existing adjusted products, such as TRMM (Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission), GPCC (Global Precipitation Climatology Centre) and IMERG (Integrated Multi-satellitE Retrievals for GPM), which are available a few weeks or months after their detection. Accurate and spatially-distributed precipitation information is vital to the study of the regional hydrological cycle and water resources, as well as for environmental management. To provide high spatio-temporal resolution precipitation estimates over insufficient rain-gauge areas, great efforts have been taken in using the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and other land surface variables to improve the spatial resolution of satellite precipitation datasets. However, the strong spatio-temporal heterogeneity of precipitation and the "hysteresis phenomenon" of the relationship between precipitation and vegetation has limited the application of these downscaling methods to high temporal resolutions. To overcome this limitation, a new temporal downscaling method was proposed in this study by introducing daily soil moisture data to explore the relationship between precipitation and the soil moisture increment index. The performance of this proposed temporal downscaling was assessed by downscaling the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) precipitation data from a monthly scale to a daily scale over the Hekouzhen to Tongguan of the Yellow River in 2013, and the downscaled daily precipitation datasets were validated with in-situ measurement from 23 rainfall observation stations. The validation results indicate that the downscaled daily precipitation agrees with the rain gauge observations, with a correlation coefficient of 0.59, a mean error range of 1.70 mm, and a root mean square error of 5.93 mm. In general, the monthly precipitation decomposition method proposed in this paper has combined the advantage of both microwave remote sensing products. It has acceptable precision and can generate precipitation on a diurnal scale. It is an important development in the field of using auxiliary data to perform temporal downscaling. This paper evaluates Integrated Multi-Satellite Retrievals from GPM (IMERG-F) over Europe for the period 2014–2018 in order to evaluate application of the retrievals to hydrology. IMERG-F is compared with a large pan-European precipitation dataset built on rain gauge stations, i.e., the ENSEMBLES OBServation (E-OBS) gridded dataset. Although there is overall agreement in the spatial distribution of mean precipitation (R2 = 0.8), important discrepancies are revealed in mountainous regions, specifically the Alps, Pyrenees, west coast of the British Isles, Scandinavia, the Iberian and Italian peninsulas, and the Adriatic coastline. The results show that the strongest contributors to poor performance are pixels where IMERG-F has no gauges available for adjustment. If rain gauges are available, IMERG-F yields results similar to those of the surface observations, although the performance varies by region. However, even accounting for gauge adjustment, IMERG-F systematically underestimates precipitation in the Alps and Scandinavian mountains. Conversely, IMERG-F overestimates precipitation in the British Isles, Italian Peninsula, Adriatic coastline, and eastern European plains. Additionally, the research shows that gauge adjustment worsens the spatial gradient of precipitation because of the coarse resolution of Global Precipitation Climatology Centre data. Accurate precipitation detection is one of the most important factors in satellite data assimilation, due to the large uncertainties associated with precipitation properties in radiative transfer models and numerical weather prediction (NWP) models. In this paper, a method to achieve remote sensing of precipitation and classify its intensity over land using a co-located ground-based radar network is described. This method is intended to characterize the O−B biases for the microwave humidity sounder -2 (MWHS-2) under four categories of precipitation: precipitation-free (0–5 dBZ), light precipitation (5–20 dBZ), moderate precipitation (20–35 dBZ), and intense precipitation (>35 dBZ). Additionally, O represents the observed brightness temperature (TB) of the satellite and B is the simulated TB from the model background field using the radiative transfer model. Thresholds for the brightness temperature differences between channels, as well as the order relation between the differences, exhibited a good estimation of precipitation. It is demonstrated that differences between observations and simulations were predominantly due to the cases in which radar reflectivity was above 15 dBZ. For most channels, the biases and standard deviations of O−B increased with precipitation intensity. Specifically, it is noted that for channel 11 (183.31 ± 1 GHz), the standard deviations of O−B under moderate and intense precipitation were even smaller than those under light precipitation and precipitation-free conditions. Precipitation of future climate models is critical for the assessments of future drought but contains large systematic biases over the Tibetan Plateau. Although the common precipitation bias correction method, quantile mapping has achieved remarkable results in terms of temporal bias correction, it does not consider the spatial distribution of bias. Furthermore, the extent to which precipitation bias affects drought estimation remains unclear. In our study, we take the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau (QHTP) as the case study and quantify the impact of corrected precipitation bias for seven Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) models on drought assessment in historical and future scenarios (SSP1-2.6, SSP2-4.5, and SSP5-8.5). To improve the accuracy of drought prediction, potential evapotranspiration (PET) was also corrected. Firstly, the histogram matching-quantile mapping (HQ) algorithm considering spatial correction is established to correct precipitation and PET. Then, we quantified the effects of precipitation and potential evapotranspiration correction on the change of drought intensity, and finally analyzed the spatiotemporal trends of precipitation, PET, and SPEI over the QHTP in the future. The results show that the HQ method can effectively improve the simulation ability of the model, especially the simulation accuracy of the ensemble model. After correction, the average annual total precipitation (TP) declined by 64.262% in 99.952% of QHTP, the average PET increased in 11.902% of the area and decreased in 88.098% of the area, while the intensity of the drought in 81.331% of the area increased by 2.875% and the 18.669% area decreased by 1.139%. Therefore, the uncorrected simulation data overestimated the future increase trend in precipitation and underestimated the future decrease trend in SPEI. The trend of HQ-corrected TP increased by 3.730 mm/10a, 7.190 mm/10a, and 12.790 mm/10a, and the trend of SPEI (TP and PET corrected) decreased by 0.143/100a, 0.397/100a, and 0.675/100a, respectively. Sediment discharge is widely regarded as a critical indicator of soil and water loss. The Mann–Kendall (M-K) test was applied to analyze the trends of temperature, precipitation, annual runoff, annual sediment discharge (ASD), and snow cover area proportion (SCAP). Sensitivity coefficient and contribution rate were adopted to assess the sensitivity of ASD to driving factors, and the contribution of driving factors to ASD. The results showed: (1) ASD of the Kaidu River and the Aksu River originating from Tien Shan decreased at rates of 3.8503 × 107 kg per year (p < 0.01) and 47.198 × 107 kg per year, respectively, from 2001 to 2019. The ASD there was also found to be more sensitive to SCAP changes in autumn and winter, respectively. (2) ASD of the Yarkand River and the Yulong Kashgar River originating from the Karakoram Mountains increased at rates of 21.807 × 107 kg per year and 27.774 × 107 kg per year, respectively, during 2001–2019. The ASD there was determined to be more sensitive to annual runoff. (3) In terms of contribution rate, except for the Kaidu River, annual runoff of the other three rivers made the largest contribution. An analysis of the relationship between changes in Arctic stratospheric ozone (ASO) and precipitation in eastern North America (38°–54°N, 65°–87°W; PENA) was performed using observational and reanalysis data coupled with the Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model version 4 (WACCM4). We found that March ASO exhibits a strong correlation with PENA in April, indicating that the one-month leading ASO exerts a potentially strong impact on April PENA. Changes in tropospheric circulation over the North Pacific and North America can be influenced by ASO anomalies via stratosphere–troposphere interactions. Increased ASO typically results in the transport of drier, colder air from northwest to eastern North America and suppresses local convective activity by enhancing regional downwelling. These conditions lead to a decrease in regional atmospheric water vapor content (1000–600 hPa). Abnormally high ASO may therefore suppress precipitation, whereas abnormally low ASO serves to enhance precipitation, and the finding is supported by WACCM4 simulations incorporating these ASO anomaly signals. We also present an ASO-based statistical linear model for predicting April PENA. Results confirm that the linear model reproduces April PENA for both training and testing periods, based on March ASO, demonstrating the reliability and stability of this linear model.
