Multiple datasets related to pond and marine aquaculture have been published using diverse remote sensing technologies, yet a comprehensive dataset detailing spatial distribution on both land and sea sides is lacking. Firstly, a meticulous comparison of datasets which we selected related to aquaculture ponds and marine, ensuring consistency in trends. Subsequently, the datasets published by our team were edited and integrated to illustrate aquaculture activities on both sides of China's coastal zone. Finally, a spatial differentiation of coastal aquaculture in major provinces was analyzed. This analysis also utilizes the types of coastline and statistical data, guiding coordinated resource management efforts. The results unveil a distinctive spatial distribution pattern, concentrating aquaculture in the northern regions—Bohai Sea, Jiangsu, Fujian, and Pearl River coasts in Guangdong. The provinces rich in aquaculture resources, such as Shandong, Guangdong, and Liaoning, exhibit extensive coastlines. However, remote sensing monitoring suggests an underestimation of Liaoning's marine aquaculture compared to statistical yearbook data. Furthermore, southern provinces like Guangdong and Fujian exhibit significantly higher aquaculture output than Liaoning. Zhejiang leads in fishing output. As one of the four major bay areas in the world, the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) is a highly integrated mega urban agglomeration and its unparalleled urbanization has induced prominent land contradictions between humans and nature, which hinders its sustainability and has become the primary concern in this region. In this paper, we probed the historical characteristics of land use and land cover change (LUCC) in the GBA from 2005 to 2015, and forecasted its future land use pattern for 2030, 2050, and 2070, using a cellular automata–Markov (CA–Markov) model, under three typical tailored scenarios, i.e., urban development (UD), cropland protection (CP), and ecology security (ES), for land use optimization. The major findings are as follows: (1) The encroachments of build-up land on the other land uses under rapid urbanization accounted for the leading forces of LUCCs in the past decade. Accordingly, the urban sprawl was up to 1441.73 km2 (23.47%), with cropland, forest land, and water areas reduced by 570.77 km2 (4.38%), 526.05 km2 (1.76%), and 429.89 km2 (10.88%), respectively. (2) Based on the validated CA–Markov model, significant differences are found in future land use patterns under multiple scenarios, with the discrepancy magnified over time and driven by different orientations. (3) Through comprehensive comparisons and tradeoffs, the ES scenario mode seems optimal for the GBA in the next decades, which optimizes the balance between socio-economic development and ecological protection. These results serve as an early warning for future land problems and can be applied to land use management and policy formulation to promote the sustainable development of the GBA. Mangroves are an important source of blue carbon that grow in coastal areas. The study of mangrove species distribution is the basis of carbon storage research. In this study, we explored the potential of combining optical (Gaofen-1, Sentinel-2, and Landsat-9) and fully polarized synthetic aperture radar data from different periods (Gaofen-3) to distinguish mangrove species in the Fucheng town of Leizhou, Guangdong Province. The Gaofen-1 data were fused with Sentinel-2 and Landsat-9 satellite data, respectively. The new data after fusion had both high spatial and spectral resolution. The backscattering coefficient and polarization decomposition parameters of the fully polarized SAR data which could characterize the canopy structure of mangroves were extracted. Ten different feature combinations were designed by combining the two types of data. The extremely randomized trees algorithm (ERT) was used to classify the species, and the optimal feature subset was selected by the feature selection algorithm on the basis of the ERT, and the importance of the features was sorted. Studies show the following: (1) When controlling a single variable, the higher the spatial resolution of the multi-spectral data, the higher the interspecific classification accuracy. (2) The coupled Sentinel-2 and Landsat-9 data with a 2 m resolution will have higher classification accuracy than a single data source. (3) The selected feature subset contains all types of features in the optical data and the polarization decomposition features of the SAR data from different periods: multi-spectral band > texture feature > polarization decomposition parameter > vegetation index. Among the optimized feature combinations, the classification accuracy of mangrove species was the highest, the overall classification accuracy was 90.13%, and Kappa was 0.84, indicating that multi-source and SAR data from different periods coupling could improve the discrimination of mangrove species. (4) The ERT classification algorithm is suitable for the study of mangrove species classification, and the classification accuracy of extremely random trees in this paper is higher than that of random forest (RF), K-nearest neighbor (KNN), and Bayesian (Bayes). United Nations Sustainable Development Goal SDG11.3.1—the ratio of land consumption rate (LCR) to population growth rate (PGR) (LCRPGR)—aims to measure the efficiency and sustainability of urban land use. In recent years, SDG11.3.1 has been widely used in sustainable urban development research. However, previous studies have focused on the urban core area, while the sustainable development status of the urban peripheral areas (suburban and rural areas) that contribute significantly to the ecological environment has been neglected. To this end, relying on land use/cover change (LUCC) data obtained from high-resolution remote sensing satellite images rather than the single impervious surface data used in traditional research, according to the multiple functions of the land use type, the city is divided into three types of space: production, living, and ecological spaces. Research from the perspective of multi-scale coordination is of great significance for gaining a comprehensive understanding of the sustainable development status of urban space. Taking the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) in China as an example, in this paper, LUCC remote sensing data and comprehensive population and gross domestic product (GDP) data are used. From the multi-functional production-living-ecological space perspective, based on the original land use efficiency indicator, the ratio of land consumption rate (LCR) to economic growth rate (EGR) (LCREGR) is introduced and the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) is used to comprehensively evaluate the sustainable development level (SDL) of the space between 2000–2010 and 2010–2020 on the urban agglomeration and prefecture-level city scales. The results show that (1) the level of and changes in the spatial sustainable development are significantly different at different scales; (2) the division of the production-living-ecological spaces can guide cities to optimize different types of spaces in the future. While rapid urbanization promotes social and economic development, it exacerbates human outdoor thermal comfort, which increases the risks to human health. This paper uses four thermal comfort indices and multiple satellite observations to explore the urbanization effect on summer heat stress in Guangdong from 1979–2018, a coastal province of China. Two types of thermal comfort index are used here, namely the direct thermal comfort index (Heat Index, HI; Temperature–Humidity Index, THI; Discomfort Index, DI) and the physiological thermal comfort index (Universal Thermal Climate Index, UTCI). We compare the differences in the urbanization effects on the changes in the three direct thermal comfort indices (HI, THI, and DI) and a physiological thermal comfort index (UTCI). The results show that all four thermal comfort indices indicate an overall warming trend. Of them, urban sites show a higher warming trend than rural sites, indicating that heat stress changes are significantly influenced by urbanization from 1979–2018, which is consistent with the effect of urbanization on surface air temperature. However, except for the UTCI, this warming of direct thermal comfort indices affected by urbanization has become insignificant under the regional vegetation greening from 2004–2018 (also consistent with surface air temperature). This is primarily attributed to the different effects of wind speed on the physiological thermal comfort index in urban and rural areas: Decreasing wind speeds in urban areas lead to an increase in UTCI, while wind speeds in rural areas increase instead and decrease UTCI, thus widening the UTCI differences between urban and rural areas. Our results indicate that urbanization has a different effect on thermal comfort indices. When using the thermal comfort index, it is necessary to consider that different thermal comfort indices may bring different results. UTCI considers more factors that affect human heat perception, so it can better describe human outdoor thermal comfort. It also highlights the importance of urban ventilation and urban greenness in mitigating urban outdoor thermal comfort in the sustainable construction of future urbanization in coastal cities. Ozone (O3) pollution has negative impacts on human health and property. The Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) is facing severe O3 pollution problems due to rapid economic development. In this paper, we used sensitivity experiments and GeoDetector to analyze the effects of meteorological factors, anthropogenic emissions, and landscape patterns on O3 concentrations as well as the contributions of NOx and NMVOC (non-methane volatile organic compounds) to the variation of O3 concentrations and the causes of sectoral emissions in the GBA in 2017. The results revealed that, in GBA, the contribution of meteorology to the variation of O3 concentration was dominant both in terms of region and extent, and the contribution of emissions was relatively weak. The contribution of meteorology and emissions to O3 production was mainly contributory. Meteorology contributed significantly to O3, and its non-linear interaction with anthropogenic emissions and surface landscape affected O3 concentration changes. The degree of contribution of NOx and NMVOC varied widely among seasons, and the variation of their relative contribution areas was related to residential sector emissions and agricultural sector emissions. This article enriches the exploration of the O3 formation mechanism in the GBA and provides theoretical support for the implementation of differentiated regional and seasonal mitigation strategies for O3 concentration. Using deep learning-based object detection algorithms for landslide hazards detection is very popular and effective. However, most existing algorithms are designed for landslides in a specific geographical range. This paper constructs a set of landslide detection models YOLOX-Pro, based on the improved YOLOX (You Only Look Once) target detection model to address the poor detection of complex mixed landslides. Wherein the VariFocal is used to replace the binary cross entropy in the original classification loss function to solve the uneven distribution of landslide samples and improve the detection recall; the coordinate attention (CA) mechanism is added to enhance the detection accuracy. Firstly, 1200 historical landslide optical remote sensing images in thirty-eight areas of China were extracted from Google Earth to create a mixed sample set for landslide detection. Next, the three attention mechanisms were compared to form the YOLOX-Pro model. Then, we tested the performance of YOLOX-Pro by comparing it with four models: YOLOX, YOLOv5, Faster R-CNN, and Single Shot MultiBox Detector (SSD). The results show that the YOLOX-Pro(m) has significantly improved the detection accuracy of complex and small landslides than the other models, with an average precision (AP0.75) of 51.5%, APsmall of 36.50%, and ARsmall of 49.50%. In addition, optical remote sensing images of a 12.32 km 2 group-occurring landslides area located in Mibei village, Longchuan County, Guangdong, China, and 750 Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) images collected from the Internet were also used for landslide detection. The research results proved that the proposed method has strong generalization and good detection performance for many types of landslides, which provide a technical reference for the broad application of landslide detection using UAV. For quantitative precipitation estimation (QPE) based on polarimetric radar (PR) and rain gauges (RGs), the quality of the radar data is crucial for estimation accuracy. This paper proposes a combined radar quality index (CRQI) to represent the quality of the radar data used for QPE and an algorithm that uses CRQI to improve the QPE performance. Nine heavy rainfall events that occurred in Guangdong Province, China, were used to evaluate the QPE performance in five contrast tests. The QPE performance was evaluated in terms of the overall statistics, spatial distribution, near real-time statistics, and microphysics. CRQI was used to identify good-quality data pairs (i.e., PR-based QPE and RG observation) for correcting estimators (i.e., relationships between the rainfall rate and the PR parameters) in real-time. The PR-based QPE performance was improved because estimators were corrected according to variations in the drop size distribution, especially for data corresponding to 1.1 mm < average Dm < 1.4 mm, and 4 < average log10Nw < 4.5. Some underestimations caused by the beam broadening effect, excessive beam height, and partial beam blockages, which could not be mitigated by traditional algorithms, were significantly mitigated by the proposed algorithm using CRQI. The proposed algorithm reduced the root mean square error by 17.5% for all heavy rainfall events, which included three precipitation types: convective precipitation (very heavy rainfall), squall line (huge raindrops), and stratocumulus precipitation (small but dense raindrops). Although the best QPE performance was observed for stratocumulus precipitation, the biggest improvement in performance with the proposed algorithm was observed for the squall line. The Ecological Protection Redline (EPR) is an innovative measure implemented in China to maintain the structural stability and functional security of the ecosystem. By prohibiting large-scale urban and industrial construction activities, EPR is regarded as the "lifeline" to ensure national ecological security. It is of great practical significance to scientifically evaluate the protection effect of EPR and identify the protection vacancies. However, current research has focused only on the protection effects of the EPR on ecosystem services (ESs), and the protection effect of the EPR on ecological connectivity remains poorly understood. Based on an evaluation of ES importance, the circuit model, and hotspot analysis, this paper identified the ecological security pattern in Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA), analyzed the role of EPR in maintaining ES and ecological connectivity, and identified protection gaps. The results were as follows: (1) The ecological sources were mainly distributed in mountainous areas of the GBA. The ecological sources and ecological corridors constitute a circular ecological shelter surrounding the urban agglomeration of the GBA. (2) The EPR effectively protected water conservation, soil conservation, and biodiversity maintenance services, but the protection efficiency of carbon sequestration service and ecological connectivity were low. In particularly, EPR failed to continuously protect regional large-scale ecological corridors and some important stepping stones. (3) The protection gaps of carbon sequestration service and ecological connectivity in the study area reached 1099.80 km2 and 2175.77 km2, respectively, mainly distributed in Qingyuan, Yunfu, and Huizhou. In future EPR adjustments, important areas for carbon sequestration service and ecological connectivity maintenance should be included. This study provides a comprehensive understanding of the protection effects of EPR on ecological structure and function, and it has produced significant insights into improvements of the EPR policy. Cultivated land resources are crucial for food security and economic and social development. However, with the acceleration of urbanization and shifts in land use, cultivated land fragmentation (CLF) has emerged as a significant factor constraining the sustainable development of agriculture in China. As the most urbanized region, optimizing cultivated land resources and coordinating urban and rural development has become an urgent issue for rural sustainable development in Guangdong Province. This study analyzes the spatiotemporal characteristics of CLF in Guangdong Province from 2000 to 2020 using landscape pattern indices, CRITIC empowerment, and a multiscale geographically weighted regression (MGWR) model. The cultivated land fragmentation index (CLFI) for Guangdong Province reveals a fluctuating trend from 2000 to 2012, increasing from 0.453 in 2012 to 0.641 in 2020. The CLFI is notably high in the Pearl River Delta region, as well as in Meizhou and Maoming. The results show the dynamic changes of the driving factors of CLF at the county scale in 2000, 2010, and 2020. Slope and grain output consistently emerge as key driving factors of CLF. Furthermore, agricultural benefits played a significant role in 2000 and 2020, whereas the coefficient for social economic development was more pronounced in 2010. By identifying the heterogeneity of the driving factors, this study suggests that strategies to address CLF should comprehensively consider aspects such as the optimization of cultivated land resources, farmers' interests, industrial restructuring, and the multifunctional development of farmland. The study findings can assist government policy-making for rural sustainable development, addressing CLF and food insecurity, and alleviating the regional development imbalance and urban–rural income gap, with the ultimate aim of achieving common prosperity. Terraces, farmlands built along hillside contours, are common anthropogenically designed landscapes. Terraces control soil and water loss and improve land productivity; therefore, obtaining their spatial distribution is necessary for soil and water conservation and agricultural production. Spatial information of large-scale terraces can be obtained using satellite images and through deep learning. However, when extracting terraces, accurately segmenting the boundaries of terraces and identifying small terraces in diverse scenarios continues to be challenging. To solve this problem, we combined two deep learning modules, ANB-LN and DFB, to produce a new deep learning framework (NLDF-Net) for terrace extraction using remote sensing images. The model first extracted the features of the terraces through the coding area to obtain abstract semantic features, and then gradually recovered the original size through the decoding area using feature fusion. In addition, we constructed a terrace dataset (the HRT-set) for Guangdong Province and conducted a series of comparative experiments on this dataset using the new framework. The experimental results show that our framework had the best extraction effect compared to those of other deep learning methods. Tracking long-term tidal flat dynamics is crucial for coastal restoration decision making. Accurately capturing the loss and gain of tidal flats due to human-induced disturbances is challenging in the micro-tidal areas. In this study, we developed an automated method for mapping the annual tidal flat changes in the micro-tidal areas under intense human activities, by integrating spectral harmonization, time series segmentation from dual spectral indices, and the tide-independent hierarchical classification strategy. Our method has two key novelties. First, we adopt flexible temporal segments for each pixel based on the dual full-time series spectral indices, instead of solely using a fixed period window, to help obtain more reliable inundation frequency features. Second, a tide-independent hierarchical classification strategy based on the inundation features and the Otsu algorithm capture the tidal flat changes well. Our method performed well in Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao (GHKM), a typical area with micro-tidal range and intense human activities, with overall accuracies of 89% and 92% for conversion types and turning years, respectively. The tidal flats in GHKM decreased by 24% from 1986 to 2021, resulting from the loss of 504.45 km2, partially offset by an accretion of 179.88 km2. Further, 70.9% of the total loss was in the Great Bay Area, concentrated in 1991–1998 and 2001–2016. The historical trajectories of tidal flat loss were driven by various policies implemented by the national, provincial, and local governments. This study scrutinizes interannual (2003–2023) variations in coastal upwelling along the Guangdong Province during summers (June–August) in the northeastern South China Sea (NESCS) by comprehensively applying the moderate-resolution imaging spectroradiometer (MODIS) remote sensing sea surface temperature (SST) and chlorophyll concentration (CHL) data and the model reanalysis product. The results show that SST and upwelling intensity in the sea area have significant (p < 0.05) rising trends in the last 21 years. The CHL shows an upward but insignificant trend, which is affected simultaneously by the rise in SST and the enhancement of upwelling. Further analysis reveals that the interannual variations in upwelling are robustly related to the wind fields' variations in the coastal region. A clockwise/counter-clockwise anomaly in the wind field centered on the NESCS facilitates alongshore/onshore winds near the Guangdong coast, which can strengthen/weaken coastal upwelling. Based on the correlation between wind field variations and large-scale climate factors, long-term variations in the upwelling intensity can be primarily predicted by the Oceanic Niño Index. The spatiotemporal distribution of ecosystem service values (ESVs) and ecological risk are critical indicators to represent the regional ecological protection level and potential of sustainable development, which largely depend on land-use patterns. Aiming to contribute to global climate mitigation, China has proposed dual-carbon goals that would remarkably influence the land-use/cover change (LUCC) distribution. Based on the Landsat land cover data of 2000, 2010 and 2020 and multisource satellite products, several driving factors are integrated into the patch-generating land use simulation (PLUS) model to simulate future LUCC patterns for the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) under rapid urbanization, cropland protection and carbon neutral (CN) scenarios from 2020 to 2050. Spatial–temporal ecosystem service and ESVs are allocated using INVEST and the equivalent factor method and thus ecological risks are evaluated using the entropy method. Results indicate that forest growth is the largest under the CN scenario, especially in the northwestern and northeastern GBA, exceeding 25,800 km2 in 2050, which results in both the highest habitat quality and carbon storage. The largest ESVs, reaching higher than 5210 yuan/pixel, are found in the CN scenario, particularly expanding toward the suburban area, leading to the lowest ecological risks. From 2020 to 2050, habitat quality, carbon storage and ESVs improve, while ecological risks decline in the CN scenario. How to distinguish the relative role of climate change and human activities in vegetation dynamics has attracted increasing attention. However, most of the current studies concentrate on arid and semiarid regions, while the relative contributions of climate change and human activities to vegetation changes remain unclear in warm-humid regions. Based on the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and climatic variables (temperature, precipitation, radiation) during 2001–2020, this study used the Theil–Sen median trend analysis, partial correlation analysis, and residual trend analysis to analyze the spatiotemporal pattern of vegetation trends, the response of vegetation to climate variations, and the climatic and anthropogenic contributions to vegetation dynamics in the warm and humid Guangdong Province of south China. Results showed that the NDVI in most areas exhibited an increasing trend. Changes in climatic variables displayed different spatial variations which, however, were not significant in most areas. Vegetation responded diversely to climate change with temperature as the most important climatic factor for vegetation improvement in most areas, while precipitation was the dominant climatic factor in the southern edge region and radiation was the dominant climatic factor in the central and western regions. Vegetation in most areas was influenced by both climate change and human activities, but the contribution rate of human activities was commonly much higher than climate change. The findings of this study are expected to enhance our understanding of the relative climatic and anthropogenic contributions to vegetation changes in warm-humid regions and provide a scientific basis for future ecological policies and ecosystem management in highly urbanized regions. Landslides triggered by extreme precipitation events pose a significant threat to human life and property in mountainous regions. Therefore, accurate identification of landslide locations is crucial for effective prevention and mitigation strategies. During the prolonged heavy rainfall events in Guangdong Province between 21 May and 21 June 2022, shallow and clustered landslides occurred in the mountainous regions of the Beijiang River Basin. This research used high-resolution satellite imagery and integrated the Mask R-CNN algorithm model with spectral, textural, morphological and physical characteristics of landslides in remote sensing imagery, in addition to landslide-influencing factors and other constraints, to interpret the landslides induced by the event through remote sensing techniques. The detection results show that the proposed methodology achieved a high level of accuracy in landslide identification, with a precision rate of 81.91%, a recall rate of 84.07% and an overall accuracy of 87.28%. A total of 3782 shallow landslides were detected, showing a distinct clustered distribution pattern. The performance of Mask R-CNN, Faster-CNN, U-Net and YOLOv3 models in landslide identification was further compared, and the effects of setting the rotation angle and constraints on the identification results of the Mask R-CNN algorithm model were investigated. The results show that each model improves the evaluation indices, but the Mask R-CNN model has the best detection performance; the rotation angle can effectively improve the generalization ability and robustness of the model, and the landslide-inducing factor data and texture feature sample data are the best for landslide identification. The research results provide valuable references and technical support for deepening our understanding of the distribution patterns of rainfall-triggered shallow and cluster landslides in the Beijiang River Basin. Compound heat–precipitation events exert significant impacts on severe weather occurrences. Intense vertical air movement, driving vigorous convection, primarily contributes to the formation of extreme precipitation. Nevertheless, such compound events' temporal and spatial variation patterns at convection-permitting resolutions remain inadequately explored. This study assesses the performance of the Convection-Permitting Model (CPM) against a model of convection parameterization while investigating the spatial dynamics of compound heat–precipitation events in Guangdong, China. Our findings indicate that the CPM exhibits heightened reliability and precision in simulating temperature and precipitation patterns, especially in extreme precipitation simulation, which would be highly underestimated without a convection-permitting process. Projections from the CPM reveal that, across historical and future periods, the occurrence frequency and fraction of T-P events (instances of extreme heat followed by extreme precipitation) surpass those of P-T events (occurrences of extreme precipitation followed by extreme heat). For T-P events, the CPM exhibits better capability in capturing high-frequency occurrence areas, whereas the results of the relatively low-resolution model show less distinct spatial variations. Both types of events exhibit noticeable upward trends yearly within each period. By the close of this century, the provincial average frequency of P-T events is anticipated to decrease from 20.32 times to 14.55 times. In contrast, the frequency of T-P events is projected to increase from 87.7 times to 101.38 times. Using convolutional neural network (CNN) methods and satellite images for landslide identification and classification is a very efficient and popular task in geological hazard investigations. However, traditional CNNs have two disadvantages: (1) insufficient training images from the study area and (2) uneven distribution of the training set and validation set. In this paper, we introduced distant domain transfer learning (DDTL) methods for landslide detection and classification. We first introduce scene classification satellite imagery into the landslide detection task. In addition, in order to more effectively extract information from satellite images, we innovatively add an attention mechanism to DDTL (AM-DDTL). In this paper, the Longgang study area, a district in Shenzhen City, Guangdong Province, has only 177 samples as the landslide target domain. We examine the effect of DDTL by comparing three methods: the convolutional CNN, pretrained model and DDTL. We compare different attention mechanisms based on the DDTL. The experimental results show that the DDTL method has better detection performance than the normal CNN, and the AM-DDTL models achieve 94% classification accuracy, which is 7% higher than the conventional DDTL method. The requirements for the detection and classification of potential landslides at different disaster zones can be met by applying the AM-DDTL algorithm, which outperforms traditional CNN methods. Air temperature (Ta) is essential for studying surface processes and human activities, particularly agricultural cultivation, which is strongly influenced by temperature. Remote sensing techniques that integrate multi-source data can estimate Ta with a high degree of accuracy, overcoming the shortcomings of traditional measurements due to spatial heterogeneity. Based on in situ measurements in Guangdong Province from 2012 to 2018, this study applied three machine learning (ML) models and fused multi-source datasets to evaluate the performance of four data combinations in Ta estimation. Correlations of covariates were compared, focusing on rice planting areas (RA). The results showed that (1) The fusion of multi-source data improved the accuracy of model estimations, where the best performance was achieved by the random forest (RF) model combined with the ERA5 combination, with the highest R2 reaching 0.956, the MAE value of 0.996 °C, and the RMSE of 1.365 °C; (2) total precipitation (TP), wind speed (WD), normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), and land surface temperature (LST) were significant covariates for long-term Ta estimations; (3) Rice planting improved the model performance in estimating Ta, and model accuracy decreased during the crop rotation in summer. This study provides a reference for the selection of temperature estimation models and covariate datasets. 3D building models are an essential data infrastructure for various applications in a smart city system, since they facilitate spatial queries, spatial analysis, and interactive visualization. Due to the highly complex nature of building structures, automatically reconstructing 3D buildings from point clouds remains a challenging task. In this paper, a Roof Attribute Graph (RAG) method is proposed to describe the decomposition and topological relations within a complicated roof structure. Furthermore, top-down decomposition and bottom-up refinement processes are proposed to reconstruct roof parts according to the Gestalt laws, generating a complete structural model with a hierarchical topological tree. Two LiDAR datasets from Guangdong (China) and Vaihingen (Germany) with different point densities were used in our study. Experimental results, including the assessment on Vaihingen standardized by the International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ISPRS), show that the proposed method can be used to model 3D building roofs with high quality results as demonstrated by the completeness and correctness metrics presented in this paper. The change of spatial and temporal distribution of precipitation has an important impact on urban water security. The effect of land cover land use change (LCLUC) on the spatial and temporal distribution of precipitation needs to be further studied. In this study, transfer matrix, standard deviation ellipse and spatial autocorrelation analysis techniques were used. Based on the data of land cover land use and precipitation, this paper analyzed the land cover land use change and its influence on the spatial and temporal distribution pattern of precipitation in the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA). The results showed that from 2001 to 2019, the area of cropland, water, barren, forest/grassland in the GBA decreased by 44.03%, 8.05%, 50.22%, 0.43%, respectively, and the area of construction land increased by 20.05%. The precipitation in the GBA was mainly concentrated in spring and summer, and the precipitation in spring tended to increase gradually, while the precipitation in summer tended to decrease gradually, while the precipitation in autumn and winter has no obvious change. It was found that with the change of land cover land use, the spatial distribution of precipitation also changed. The accurate detection of coal-fired power plants (CFPPs) is meaningful for environmental protection, while challenging. The CFPP is a complex combination of multiple components with varying layouts, unlike clearly defined single objects, such as vehicles. CFPPs are typically located in industrial districts with similar backgrounds, further complicating the detection task. To address this issue, we propose a MUltistage Recursive Enhanced Detection Network (MUREN) for accurate and efficient CFPP detection. The effectiveness of MUREN lies in the following: First, we design a symmetrically enhanced module, including a spatial-enhanced subnetwork (SEN) and a channel-enhanced subnetwork (CEN). SEN learns the spatial relationships to obtain spatial context information. CEN provides adaptive channel recalibration, restraining noise disturbance and highlighting CFPP features. Second, we use a recursive construction set on top of feature pyramid networks to receive features more than once, strengthening feature learning for relatively small CFPPs. We conduct comparative and ablation experiments in two datasets and apply MUREN to the Pearl River Delta region in Guangdong province for CFPP detection. The comparative experiment results show that MUREN improves the mAP by 5.98% compared with the baseline method and outperforms by 4.57–21.38% the existing cutting-edge detection methods, which indicates the promising potential of MUREN in large-scale CFPP detection scenarios. Based on Doppler radar observation and reanalysis data, the statistical characteristics of mesovortices (MVs) during the first rainy season (April–June) in Guangdong, South China, from 2017 to 2019 are studied, including their spatiotemporal distributions, structural features and favorable environmental conditions. The results show that the MVs usually exhibit short lifetimes; about 70% last for less than 30 min. The intensity and horizontal scale of the MVs are proportional to their lifetime. Long-lived MVs have larger horizontal scales and stronger intensities than short-lived ones. The MVs are mainly observed over the Pearl River Delta region, followed by western Guangdong Province, but relatively fewer in both eastern and northern Guangdong Province. The uneven spatial distribution of the MVs is closely related to the differences in the topographical features and the environment conditions over South China. MVs are prone to form over flat regions. The Pearl River Delta and eastern Guangdong regions are relatively flat compared to the more mountainous western and northern Guangdong regions. Moreover, the monsoonal south-westerlies, water vapor flux, atmospheric instability and vertical wind shear over southwest Guangdong are significantly larger than those in other regions and are favorable for the formation of MVs. The occurrence frequencies of MVs in central and southern parts of Guangdong display similar diurnal variations, reaching the peak during the late afternoon and early evening while dropping to the minimum overnight. However, the situation is opposite in northern Guangdong, with the peak overnight and the minimum during the late afternoon and early evening. The spatiotemporal distributions and physical–optical properties of aerosols are of great scientific significance for the study of climate change and atmospheric environment. What are the characteristics of aerosols in constant high humidity? Continuous wet weather (CWW) is a special weather phenomenon that occurs frequently during the late winter and early spring in South China. In this study, the CALIPSO satellite data and the ERA5 and MERRA-2 reanalysis data are used to analyze the aerosol optical properties of a total of 68 CWW processes from 2012 to 2021 in the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macau Greater Bay Area (GBA). We attempt to explore the variations in meteorological conditions and physical–optical properties of aerosols during the before-stage, wet-stage, and after-stage under different humidity levels. The results show that the prevailing wind direction is northeasterly and that the temperature and humidity are lower under the influence of cold high pressure in the before-stage. Moreover, the high aerosol optical depth (AOD) mainly results from regional transport. During the wet-stage, clean ocean airflow causes AOD to remain at a low level, whereas temperature and humidity increase significantly. The wet-stage ends with coldness when it is controlled by cold high pressure again. The atmospheric circulation in the after-stage is similar to that in the before-stage. However, a remarkable feature is that there is a temperature and humidity inversion layer, which results in a significant increase in AOD. This study reveals the physical–optical properties of aerosols during the three stages and the influence mechanism of meteorological factors on aerosols, which can provide a scientific basis for the study of CWW in the future. Widespread and long-lasting drought disasters can aggravate environmental degradation. They can lead to significant economic losses and even affect social stability. The existing drought index mostly chose arid and semi-arid regions as study areas, because cloudy weather in humid and semi-humid regions hindered the satellite in its attempts to obtain the surface reflectivity. In order to solve this problem, a cloudy region drought index (CRDI) is proposed to estimate the drought of the clouded pixels. Due to the cumulative effect of drought, the antecedent drought index (ADI) has a certain impact on the calculation of the current drought. Furthermore, cloud is the only source of natural precipitation, and it also affects the evaporation and emission process on the ground. Therefore, based on the remote sensing drought index, ADI and cloud optical thickness (COT) are used to estimate the drought of pixels with missing data due to cloud occlusion. In this paper, a case study of the cloudy Guangdong, which is located in a humid area, is presented. First, we calculated the CRDI using Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data from 2003 to 2017, and then discussed the effect of CRDI with the data from 2016 as examples. Through the analysis of the parameters of regression equation, filling efficiency, rationality of the estimated value, the continuity of CRDI and the rationality of CRDI spatial distribution results, it is concluded that CRDI can effectively estimate the drought severity of the cloud-covered pixels, and more comprehensive drought data can be obtained by using CRDI. An extremely heavy rainfall event hit Guangdong province, China, from 27 August to 1 September 2018. There were two different extreme rain regions, respectively, at the Pearl River estuary and eastern Guangdong, and a record-breaking daily precipitation of 1056.7 mm was observed at Gaotan station on 30 August. This paper utilizes a suite of observations from soundings, a gauge network, disdrometers, and polarimetric radars to gain insights to the two rainfall centers. The large-scale meteorological forcing, rainfall patterns, and microphysical processes, as well as radar-based precipitation signatures are investigated. It is concluded that a west-moving monsoon depression played a critical role in sustaining the moisture supply to the two extreme rain regions, and the combined orographic enhancement further contributed to the torrential rainfall over Gaotan station. The raindrop size distributions (DSD) observed at Zhuhai and Huidong stations, as well as the observed polarimetric radar signatures indicate that the rainfall at Doumen region was characterized by larger raindrops but a lower number concentration compared with that at Gaotan region. In addition, the dual-polarization radars are used to quantify precipitation intensity during this extreme event, providing timely information for flood warning and emergency management decision-making. Reliable and timely rice distribution information is of great value for real-time, quantitative, and localized control of rice production information. Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) has all-weather and all-day observation capability to monitor rice distribution in tropical and subtropical areas. To improve the physical interpretability and spatial interpretability of the deep learning model for SAR rice field extraction, a new SHapley Additive exPlanation (SHAP) value-guided explanation model (SGEM) for polarimetric SAR (PolSAR) data was proposed. First, a rice sample set was produced based on field survey and optical data, and the physical characteristics were extracted using decomposition of polarimetric scattering. Then a SHAP-based Physical Feature Interpretable Module (SPFIM) combing the long short-term memory (LSTM) model and SHAP values was designed to analyze the importance of physical characteristics, a credible physical interpretation associated with rice phenology was provided, and the weight of physical interpretation was combined with the weight of original PolSAR data. Moreover, a SHAP-guided spatial interpretation network (SSEN) was constructed to internalize the spatial interpretation values into the network layer to optimize the spatial refinement of the extraction results. Shanwei City, Guangdong Province, China, was chosen as the study area. The experimental results showed that the physical explanation provided by the proposed method had a high correlation with the rice phenology, and spatial self-interpretation for finer extraction results. The overall accuracy of the rice mapping results was 95.73%, and the kappa coefficient reached 0.9143. The proposed method has a high interpretability and practical value compared with other methods. To further enhance the application of dual-polarization radar in hail nowcasting, we develop an integrated convective characteristic extraction (ICCE) algorithm based on the storm cell identification and tracking (SCIT) algorithm using dual-polarization radar data and its secondary products (hydrometeor classification data and mesocyclone data). The ICCE identifies and tracks not storm cells but convective systems, and it adds other storm characteristics, such as storm microphysics (hail- and graupel-related) and storm dynamics (mesocyclone-related), to the original storm characteristics, such as storm structure (reflectivity-related) and storm tracking (motion-related). The data of four mesocyclonic hailstorms observed by the two S-band dual-polarization radars in Guangdong Province, China, are utilized, from which we draw the following conclusions: (1) ICCE excels in identifying, characterizing, matching, and tracking convective systems; and (2) the newly added storm microphysics and dynamics characteristics can more accurately quantify the relationship between mesocyclone development, hail growth, and convective system enhancement throughout the evolution of the convective system. Lodging is one of the typical abiotic adversities during paddy rice growth. In addition to affecting photosynthesis, it can seriously damage crop growth and development, such as reducing rice quality and hindering automated harvesting. It is, therefore, imperative to accurately and in good time acquire crop-lodging areas for yield prediction, agricultural insurance claims, and disaster-management decisions. However, the accuracy requirements for crop-lodging monitoring remain challenging due to complicated impact factors. Aiming at identifying paddy rice lodging on Shazai Island, Guangdong, China, caused by heavy rainfall and strong wind, a decision-tree model was constructed using multiple-parameter information from Sentinel-1 SAR images and the in situ lodging samples. The model innovatively combined the five backscattering coefficients with five polarization decomposition parameters and quantified the importance of each parameter feature. It was found that the decision-tree method coupled with polarization decomposition can be used to obtain an accurate distribution of paddy rice-lodging areas. The results showed that: (1) Radar parameters can capture the changes in lodged paddy rice. The radar parameters that best distinguish paddy rice lodging are VV, VV+VH, VH/VV, and Span. (2) Span is the parameter with the strongest feature importance, which shows the necessity of adding polarization parameters to the classification model. (3) The dual-polarized Sentinel-1 database classification model can effectively extract the area of lodging paddy rice with an overall accuracy of 84.38%, and a total area precision of 93.18%. The protection of mangroves through nature reserves has been demonstrated to be effective. There were many studies evaluating the mangrove protection effect. However, the evaluation of mangrove growth quality with positive or negative growth trends, as well as restoration potential against disturbance in nature reserves, is still lacking. Thus, this study proposed a hierarchical evaluation framework for mangrove protection in nature reserves, which takes long-term metrics at three levels of loss and gain areas, patch pattern dynamics, and pixel growth trends into account. The continuous change detection and classification (CCDC) was utilized to identify the change condition of mangroves in six nature reserves of the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area. The Entropy Weight Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) was utilized for scores evaluation of protection effort comparison from 2000 to 2020. The study results had the following three main findings. Firstly, the mangrove forest area increased by about 294.66 ha in four reserves and slightly decreased by about 58.86 ha in two. Most reserves showed an improved patches intact pattern and more positive growth trends. Secondly, the establishment of nature reserves and afforestation were the main causes of mangrove area gain. Until 2010, aquaculture, agriculture, and urban development were the biggest threats to mangroves. Finally, the protection of the reserves was successful in the early decades, but the general evaluation scores showed a decline in recent years once we considered the growth trends for quality. The proposed hierarchical evaluation methods provide a new sight to research the impacts of abrupt change and protection resilience status of the gradual restoration of nature reserves. Accurate quantitative precipitation estimation (QPE) during typhoon events is critical for flood warning and emergency management. Dual-polarization radar has proven to have better performance for QPE, compared to traditional single-polarization radar. However, polarimetric radar applications have not been extensively investigated in China, especially during extreme events such as typhoons, since the operational dual-polarization system upgrade only happened recently. This paper extends a polarimetric radar rainfall system for local applications during typhoons in southern China and conducts comprehensive studies about QPE and precipitation microphysics. Observations from S-band dual-polarization radar in Guangdong Province during three typhoon events in 2017 are examined to demonstrate the enhanced radar rainfall performance. The microphysical properties of hydrometeors during typhoon events are analyzed through raindrop size distribution (DSD) data and polarimetric radar measurements. The stratiform precipitation in typhoons presents lower mean raindrop diameter and lower raindrop concentration than that of the convection precipitation. The rainfall estimates from the adapted radar rainfall algorithm agree well with rainfall measurements from rain gauges. Using the rain gauge data as references, the maximum normalized mean bias ( N M B ) of the adapted radar rainfall algorithm is 20.27%; the normalized standard error ( N S E ) is less than 40%; and the Pearson's correlation coefficient ( C C ) is higher than 0.92. For the three typhoon events combined, the N S E and N M B are 36.66% and -15.78%, respectively. With the implementation processes of strategies such as Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area's coordinated development and "Belt and Road Initiative" initiative, the planning policies had produced a significant influence on land use distributions in Guangzhou. In this paper, we employ nighttime light (NTL) information as a proxy indicator of gross domestic product(GDP), and a future land use simulation model (FLUS) to simulate the land use patterns in Guangzhou from 2015 to 2018 and 2018 to 2035 by incorporating planning policies. The results show that: (1) the accuracy of simulation result from 2015 to 2018 based on National Polar-orbiting Partnership, Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (NPP/VIIRS) is higher than that based on GDP; (2) by incorporating planning policies into the model can better identify the potential spatial distribution of urban land and make the simulated results more consistent with the actual urban land development trajectory. This study demonstrates that NTL is a suitable and feasible proxy indicator of GDP for the land use simulations, providing a scientific basis for the development of urban planning and construction policy. Coastal areas are usually densely populated, economically developed, ecologically dense, and subject to a phenomenon that is becoming increasingly serious, land subsidence. Land subsidence can accelerate the increase in relative sea level, lead to a series of potential hazards, and threaten the stability of the ecological environment and human lives. In this paper, we adopted two commonly used multi-temporal interferometric synthetic aperture radar (MTInSAR) techniques, Small baseline subset (SBAS) and Temporarily coherent point (TCP) InSAR, to monitor the land subsidence along the entire coastline of Guangdong Province. The long-wavelength L-band ALOS/PALSAR-1 dataset collected from 2007 to 2011 is used to generate the average deformation velocity and deformation time series. Linear subsidence rates over 150 mm/yr are observed in the Chaoshan Plain. The spatiotemporal characteristics are analyzed and then compared with land use and geology to infer potential causes of the land subsidence. The results show that (1) subsidence with notable rates (>20 mm/yr) mainly occurs in areas of aquaculture, followed by urban, agricultural, and forest areas, with percentages of 40.8%, 37.1%, 21.5%, and 0.6%, respectively; (2) subsidence is mainly concentrated in the compressible Holocene deposits, and clearly associated with the thickness of the deposits; and (3) groundwater exploitation for aquaculture and agricultural use outside city areas is probably the main cause of subsidence along these coastal areas. Climate extremes, particularly drought, often affect the ecosystem. Guangdong Province is one of the most vulnerable areas in China. Using the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) to capture vegetation dynamics, this study investigated vegetation responses to drought, temperature, and precipitation extremes on a monthly scale in the vegetation area of Guangdong without vegetation type changes from 1982 to 2015. As extreme temperatures rose, a drought trend occurred in most months, with a higher rate in February and April. The vegetation evenly showed a significant greening trend in all months except June and October. The vegetation activity was significantly positively correlated with the increased extreme temperatures in most months. However, it exerted a negative correlation with drought in February, April, May, June, and September, as well as precipitation extremes in February, April, and June. The response of vegetation to drought was the most sensitive in June. The vegetation tended to be more sensitive to short-term droughts (1–2 months) and had no time lag in response to drought. Rainfall-induced landslides pose a significant threat to the lives and property of residents in the southeast mountainous and hilly area; hence, characterizing the distribution pattern and effective susceptibility mapping for rainfall-induced landslides are regarded as important and necessary measures to remediate the damage and loss resulting from landslides. From 10 June 2019 to 13 June 2019, continuous heavy rainfall occurred in Longchuan County, Guangdong Province; this event triggered extensive landslide disasters in the villages of Longchuan County. Based on high-resolution satellite images, a landslide inventory of the affected area was compiled, comprising a total of 667 rainfall-induced landslides over an area of 108 km2. These landslides consisted of a large number of shallow landslides with a few flowslides, rockfalls, and debris flows, and the majority of them occurred in Mibei and Yanhua villages. The inventory was used to analyze the distribution pattern of the landslides and their relationship with topographical, geological, and hydrological factors. The results showed that landslide abundance was closely related to slope angle, TWI, and road density. The landslide area density (LAD) increased with the increase in the above three influencing factors and was described by an exponential or linear relationship. In addition, southeast and south aspect hillslopes were more prone to collapse than the northwest –north aspect ones because of the influence of the summer southeast monsoon. A new open-source tool named MAT.TRIGRS(V1.0) was adopted to establish the landslide susceptibility map in landslide abundance areas and to back-analyze the response of the rainfall process to the change in landslide stability. The prediction results were roughly consistent with the actual landslide distribution, and most areas with high susceptibility were located on both sides of the river valley; that is, the areas with relatively steep slopes. The slope stability changes in different periods revealed that the onset of heavy rain on 10 June 2019 was the main triggering factor of these group-occurring landslides, and the subsequent rainfall with low intensity had little impact on slope stability. Since the 21st century, China has experienced rapid development, and the spatial and temporal changes in vegetation cover have become increasingly significant. Southern China is a representative region for human activities, climate change, and vegetation change, but the current human understanding of the interactions between vegetation and its influencing factors is still very limited. In our study, we use NDVI as the vegetation greenness data, land cover data, temperature, precipitation, downgradient shortwave radiation, and CO 2 data to investigate the interrelationship among vegetation, climate change, and human activities in southern China. The changes and their consistency were studied by trend analysis and Hurst exponent analysis. Then, the contribution of each influencing factor from 2001 to 2020 was quantified by random forest. The results showed that the vegetation in southern China showed an overall rising trend, and areas with a continuous changing trend were concentrated in the Pearl River Delta, western Guangdong, and eastern Guangdong, with a growth rate of 0.02∼0.04%. The vegetation in northern Guangdong did not change significantly. The main factor of NDVI spatial variation in southern China is the land-use factor, accounting for 79.4% of the variation, while climate factors produce further differences. The contributions and lagged effects of NDVI factors on different land-use types and the lagged effects of different climate factors are different and are related to the climate and vegetation background in Sourthern China. Our study is useful in estimating the contribution of NDVI change by each considered factor and formulating environmentally friendly regional development strategies and promoting human–land harmony. Tea is an economically important crop. Evaluating the suitability of tea can better optimize the regional layout of the tea industry and provide a scientific basis for tea planting plans, which is also conducive to the sustainable development of the tea industry in the long run. Driving force analysis can be carried out to better understand the main influencing factors of tea growth. The main purpose of this study was to evaluate the suitability of tea planting in the study area, determine the prioritization of tea industry development in this area, and provide support for the government's planning and decision making. This study used Sentinel image data to obtain the current land use data of the study area. The results show that the accuracy of tea plantation classification based on Sentinel images reached 86%, and the total accuracy reached 92%. Then, we selected 14 factors, including climate, soil, terrain, and human-related factors, using the analytic hierarchy process and spatial analysis technology to evaluate the suitability of tea cultivation in the study area and obtain a comprehensive potential distribution map of tea cultivation. The results show that the moderately suitable area (36.81%) accounted for the largest proportion of the tea plantation suitability evaluation, followed by the generally suitable area (31.40%), the highly suitable area (16.91%), and the unsuitable area (16.23%). Among these areas, the highly suitable area is in line with the distribution of tea cultivation at the Yingde municipal level. Finally, to better analyze the contribution of each factor to the suitability of tea, the factors were quantitatively evaluated by the Geodetector model. The most important factors affecting the tea cultivation suitability evaluation were temperature (0.492), precipitation (0.367), slope (0.302), and elevation (0.255). Natural factors influence the evaluation of the suitability of tea cultivation, and the influence of human factors is relatively minor. Exploring the spatial distribution of land use/cover change (LUCC) and ecosystem carbon storage under future climate change scenarios can provide the scientific basis for optimizing land resource redistribution and formulating policies for sustainable socioeconomic development. We proposed a framework that integrates the patch-generating land use simulation (PLUS) model and integrated valuation of ecosystem services and tradeoffs (InVEST) model to assess the spatiotemporal dynamic changes in LUCC and ecosystem carbon storage in Guangdong based on shared socioeconomic pathways and representative concentration pathways (SSP-RCP) scenarios provided by the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project 6 (CMIP6). The future simulation results showed that the distribution patterns of LUCC were similar under SSP126 and SSP245 scenarios, but the artificial surface expanded more rapidly, and the increase in forest land slowed down under the SPP245 scenario. Conversely, under the SSP585 scenario, the sharply expanded artificial surface resulted in a continuous decrease in forest land. Under the three scenarios, population, elevation, temperature, and distance to water were the highest contributing driving factors for the growth of cultivated land, forest land, grassland, and artificial surface, respectively. By 2060, the carbon storage in terrestrial ecosystems increased from 240.89 Tg in 2020 to 247.16 Tg and 243.54 Tg under SSP126 and SSP245 scenarios, respectively, of which forest ecosystem carbon storage increased by 17.65 Tg and 15.34 Tg, respectively; while it decreased to 226.54 Tg under the SSP585 scenario, and the decreased carbon storage due to forest destruction accounted for 81.05% of the total decreased carbon storage. Overall, an important recommendation from this study is that ecosystem carbon storage can be increased by controlling population and economic growth, and balancing urban expansion and ecological conservation, as well as increasing forest land area. The spatial and temporal characteristics of precipitation and floods during typhoons in Guangdong province were examined by using TRMM TMPA 3B42 precipitation data and the Dominant River Routing Integrated with VIC Environment (DRIVE) model outputs for the period 1998–2019. The evaluations based on gauge-measured and model-simulated streamflow show the reliability of the DRIVE model. The typhoon tracks are divided into five categories for those that landed on or influenced Guangdong province. Generally, the spatial distribution of precipitation and floods differ for different typhoon tracks. Precipitation has a similar spatial distribution to flood duration (FD) but is substantially different from flood intensity (FI). The average precipitation over Guangdong province usually reaches its peak at the landing time of typhoons, while the average FD and FI reach their peaks several hours later than precipitation peak. Gridded precipitation data with a high spatiotemporal resolution are of great importance for studies in hydrology, meteorology, and agronomy. Observational data from meteorological stations cannot accurately reflect the spatiotemporal distribution and variations of precipitation over a large area. Meanwhile, radar-derived precipitation data are restricted by low accuracy in areas of complex terrain and satellite-based precipitation data by low spatial resolution. Therefore, hourly precipitation models were employed to merge data from meteorological stations, Radar, and satellites; the models used five machine learning algorithms (XGBoost, gradient boosting decision tree, random forests (RF), LightGBM, and multiple linear regression (MLR)), as well as the CoKriging method. In the north of Guangdong Province, data of four heavy rainfall events in 2018 were processed with geographic data to obtain merged hourly precipitation data. The CoKriging method secured the best prediction of spatial distribution of accumulated precipitation, followed by the tree-based machine learning (ML) algorithms, and significantly, the prediction of MLR deviated from the actual pattern. All machine learning methods showed poor performances for timepoints with little precipitation during the heavy rainfall events. The content of soil water affects the physiological activities of vegetation, and the type of vegetation also affects the soil water balance. It is of great significance to study the response of vegetation to soil moisture change, which is helpful for understanding the vulnerability of vegetation for regional and environmental protections. The response of vegetation to soil moisture in Guangdong Province from mid-October 2015 to the end of March 2017 was studied by using cloudy region drought index (CRDI) as the drought index and volumetric soil water content (VSWC) as the soil moisture index to measure the level of water stress on vegetation. Taking the peak and valley positions of CRDI and VSWC as characteristic points, the lag time of vegetation to volumetric soil water content was obtained by judging the difference between the peak and valley positions of the two indexes. The results indicate that the response of vegetation to volumetric soil water content in Guangdong lagged 3.33 periods (9–35 days) on average. When VSWC is sufficient, there is no obvious difference in time-lag between different types of vegetation. However, when VSWC is relatively insufficient, grass shows the fastest response to the change of volumetric soil water content. Both longitude and soil moisture affect the lag time of vegetation. Under the same conditions, the higher the soil humidity is, the longer the lag time is, and the longer the delay time is with the greater longitude. CRDI can reflect the time-lag effect between vegetation and VSWC in Guangdong, indicating it is a sensitive and applicable index for characterizing the time-lag phenomena of vegetation to soil moisture. The discharge signal in the initial stage of lightning is weak. The revelation of the discharge mechanism at this stage depends especially on close observation. In this study, a continuous interferometer (CINTF) was used to observe the initial stage of the upward positive leader (UPL) of the triggered lightning in Conghua District, Guangzhou City, Guangdong Province. The positioning error of CINTF for a close-range radiation source was analyzed, and the positioning error calibration method of CINTF for a specific close-range radiation source was studied, which improved the observation accuracy of elevation angle at the initial stage of the UPL of the triggered lightning. With the rise of the rocket, the positioning error in altitude during the initial stage of the UPL increased obviously. Under the layout condition of the Guangzhou field experiment site for lightning research, when the positioning results of the elevation angle of the initial stage of the UPL were 40°, 50°, and 60°, respectively, the calibrated altitude positioning error could be reduced by about 11 m, 14 m, and 20 m, respectively. On the basis of the calibrated observation results, the evolution characteristics of the initial stage of the UPL were studied, and its discharge mechanism was revealed. The precursor current pulse (PCP) was generated by a weak upward positive breakdown and a subsequent strong downward negative breakdown near the rising rocket tip, which was in the form of a single pulse. The precursor current pulse cluster (PCP cluster) and initial precursor current pulse cluster (IPCP) were both signs of self-sustaining development of the UPL. Cloud cover hinders the effective use of vegetation indices from optical satellite-acquired imagery in cloudy agricultural production areas, such as Guangdong, a subtropical province in southern China which supports two-season rice production. The number of cloud-free observations for the earth-orbiting optical satellite sensors must be determined to verify how much their observations are affected by clouds. This study determines the quantified wide-ranging impact of clouds on optical satellite observations by mapping the annual total observations (ATOs), annual cloud-free observations (ACFOs), monthly cloud-free observations (MCFOs) maps, and acquisition probability (AP) of ACFOs for the Sentinel 2 (2017–2019) and Landsat 8 (2014–2019) for all the paddy rice fields in Guangdong province (APRFG), China. The ATOs of Landsat 8 showed relatively stable observations compared to the Sentinel 2, and the per-field ACFOs of Sentinel 2 and Landsat 8 were unevenly distributed. The MCFOs varied on a monthly basis, but in general, the MCFOs were greater between August and December than between January and July. Additionally, the AP of usable ACFOs with 52.1% (Landsat 8) and 47.7% (Sentinel 2) indicated that these two satellite sensors provided markedly restricted observation capability for rice in the study area. Our findings are particularly important and useful in the tropics and subtropics, and the analysis has described cloud cover frequency and pervasiveness throughout different portions of the rice growing season, providing insight into how rice monitoring activities by using Sentinel 2 and Landsat 8 imagery in Guangdong would be impacted by cloud cover. Urban agglomeration is an advanced spatial form of integrating cities, resulting from the global urbanization of recent decades. Understanding spatiotemporal patterns and evolution is of great importance for improving urban agglomeration management. This study used continuous time-series NTL data from 2000 to 2018 combined with land-use images to investigate the spatiotemporal patterns of urbanization in the three most developed urban agglomerations in China over the past two decades: the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei urban agglomeration (BTH), the Yangtze River Delta urban agglomeration (YRD), and the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA). The NTL intensity indexes, dynamic thresholds, extracted urban areas, and landscape metrics were synthetically used to facilitate the analysis. This study found that the urbanization process in the study areas could be divided into three stages: rapid urbanization in core cities from 2000 to 2010, a fluctuating urbanization process in both core cities and surrounding cities from 2010 to 2015, and stable urbanization, mainly in surrounding cities with a medium size after 2015. Meanwhile, the urbanization level of GBA was higher than that of YRD and BTH. However, with the acceleration of urban development in YRD, the gap in the urbanization level between GBA and YRD narrowed significantly in the third stage. In addition, this study confirmed that the scattered, medium-sized cities in YRD and GBA were more developed than those in BTH. Mapping impervious surface area (ISA) dynamics at the regional and global scales is an important task that supports the management of the urban environment and urban ecological systems. In this study, we aimed to develop a new method for ISA percentage (ISA%) mapping using Nighttime Light (NTL) and MODIS products. The proposed method consists of three major steps. First, we calculated the Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI)-adjusted NTL index (EANTLI) and performed intra-annual and inter-annual corrections on the DMSP-OLS data. Second, based on the geographically weighted regression (GWR) model, we built a consistent NTL product from 2000 to 2019 by performing an intercalibration between DMSP-OLS and VIIRS images. Third, we adopted a GA-BP neural network model to monitor ISA% dynamics using NTL imagery, MODIS imagery, and population data. Taking the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay as the study area, our results indicate that the ISA% in our study area increased from 7.97% in 2000 to 17.11% in 2019, with a mean absolute error (MAE) of 0.0647, root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.1003, Pearson's coefficient of 0.9613, and R2 (R-squared) of 0.9239. Specifically, these results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method in mapping ISA and investigating ISA dynamics using temporal features extracted from consistent NTL and MODIS products. Exploring the spatial relationship between ecosystem services (ES) and human disturbance intensity (HDI) is vital for maintaining regional ecological security. This study aims to explore the spatial correlation between ES and HDI in the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) and provide meaningful implications for coastal ecological planning. Multi-source remote sensing data, remote sensing software, and geographic information system provided initial data and technical support for this research. We integrated four human pressures (population, land-use, traffic, and energy) to map the HDI in the GBA for 2018. Coastal ES were comprehensively considered and spatially visualized by extracting the ES sources. The geographically weighted Pearson correlation coefficient and bivariate local Moran were used to quantitatively reflect and spatially visualize the detailed relationship between ES and HDI. Our study presents several key findings. First, the central and southern parts of the GBA are under strong HDI, dominated by a dense population and intense land utilization. Second, the kernel density of ES sources can better manifest the spatial distribution of ES objectively in comparison to the traditional model calculation. Provisioning services mainly originate from the periphery of the central cities; cultural services are highly concentrated in the heartland of the GBA; and regulating and maintenance services have high density in the outermost regions. Third, ES and HDI have a significant correlation, and the geographically weighted Pearson correlation coefficient and local indicator of spatial association cluster maps illustrate that unlike the global findings, the local correlation is spatially nonstationary as the local scale is affected by specific human activities, natural conditions, regional development, and other local factors. Four, high-capacity regions of ES provision are mainly under high HDI. Areas with high provisioning service values are mainly affected by population and traffic pressure, whereas regulating and maintenance services and cultural services are mainly dominated by high-density populations. Regulating and maintenance services are also affected by land-use pressure. In this dissertation, the author adopted the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and meteorological data from 1982 to 2016 of the typical climate zones in coastal areas of China to analyze the influence of daytime and nighttime warming asymmetric changes in different seasons on vegetation activities during the growing season period according to the copula function theory optimized based on Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC). The main conclusions are as follows: (1) The seasonal daytime and nighttime warming trends of Guangdong, Jiangsu and Liaoning over the past 35 years were significant, and the daytime and nighttime warming rates were asymmetric. In spring and summer of Guangdong province, the warming rate in the daytime was higher than that at night, while, in autumn, the opposite law was observed. However, the warming rate in the daytime was lower than that at night in Jiangsu and Liaoning provinces. There were latitude differences in diurnal and nocturnal warming rate. (2) The daytime and nighttime warming influences on vegetation showed significant seasonal differences in these three regions. In Guangdong, the influence of nighttime warming on vegetation growth in spring is greater than that in summer, and the influences of daytime warming on vegetation growth from strong to weak were spring, summer and autumn. In Jiangsu, both the influences of daytime and nighttime warming on vegetation growth in summer were less than that in autumn. In Liaoning, both the influences of daytime and nighttime warming on vegetation growth from strong to weak were autumn, spring and summer. (3) In Guangdong, Jiangsu and Liaoning provinces, their maximum temperature (Tmax) and minimum temperature (Tmin) and the joint probability distribution functions of NDVI, all had little effect on NDVI when Tmax and Tmin respectively reached their minimum values, but their influences on NDVI were obvious when Tmax and Tmin respectively reached their maximum values. (4) The smaller the return period, the larger the range of climate factor and NDVI, which has indicated that when the climate factor is certain, the NDVI is more likely to have a smaller return period, and the frequency of NDVI over a certain period is higher. In addition, the larger the climate factor, the greater the return period is and NDVI is less frequent over a certain period of time. This research can help with deep understanding of the dynamic influence of seasonal daytime and nighttime asymmetric warming on the vegetation in typical coastal temperature zones of China under the background of global climate change. Unprecedented urbanization has occurred globally, which has converted substantial natural landscapes into impervious surfaces and further impacted ecosystem services and functioning. In this study, we quantified the spatiotemporal patterns of urbanization and investigated the impacts of urbanization on the ecosystem service value (ESV) in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) of China from 1980 to 2018. The results show that the GBA has experienced extensive urbanization, with the urban area increasing from 2607.4 to 8243.5 km2 from 1980 to 2018. Zhongshan, Zhuhai, Dongguan, Shenzhen, and Foshan exhibited the top five highest urban expansion rates. Throughout the study period, edge expansion was the most dominant growth mode, with a decreasing trend, while infilling increased in the GBA. The total ESV loss induced by urban expansion in the GBA reached 40.5 billion yuan over the past four decades. The ESV loss due to the water body decrease caused by urbanization was the largest. Our study suggests that decision-makers should control new urban areas and protect water bodies, wetlands, and forests with high ESVs to promote the sustainable development of urban agglomerations. Forest cover change is critical in the regulation of global and regional climate change through the alteration of biophysical features across the Earth's surface. The accurate assessment of forest cover change can improve our understanding of its roles in the regulation processes of surface temperature. In spite of this, few researchers have attempted to discern the varying effects of multiple satellite-derived forest changes on local surface temperatures. In this study, we quantified the actual contributions of forest loss and gain associated with evapotranspiration (ET) and albedo to local surface temperature in Guangdong Province, China using an improved spatiotemporal change pattern analysis method, and explored the interrelationships between surface temperature and air temperature change. We specifically developed three forest change products for Guangdong, combining satellite observations from Landsat, PALSAR, and MODIS for comparison. Our results revealed that the adjusted simple change detection (SCD)-based Landsat/PALSAR forest cover data performed relatively well. We found that forest loss and gain between 2000 and 2010 had opposite effects on land surface temperature (LST), ET, and albedo. Forest gain led to a cooling of −0.12 ± 0.01 °C, while forest loss led to a warming of 0.07 ± 0.01 °C, which were opposite to the anomalous change of air temperature. A reduced warming to a considerable cooling was estimated due to the forest gain and loss across latitudes. Specifically, mid-subtropical forest gains increased LST by 0.25 ± 0.01 °C, while tropical forest loss decreased LST by −0.16 ± 0.05 °C, which can demonstrate the local differences in an overall cooling. ET induced cooling and warming effects were appropriate for most forest gain and loss. Meanwhile, the nearby temperature changes caused by no-change land cover types more or less canceled out some of the warming and cooling. Albedo exhibited negligible and complex impacts. The other two products (i.e., the GlobeLand30 and MCD12Q1) affect the magnitude of temperature response due to the discrepancies in forest definition, methodology, and data resolution. This study highlights the non-negligible contributions of high-resolution maps and a robust temperature response model in the quantification of the extent to which forest gain reverses the climate effects of forest loss under global warming.
