Key long-lived greenhouse gases (CO2, CH4, and N2O) are perhaps among the best-studied components of the Earth's atmosphere today; however, attempts to predict or explain trends or even shorter-term variations of these trace gases are not always successful. Infrared spectroscopy is a recognized technique for the ground-based long-term monitoring of the gaseous composition of the atmosphere. The current paper is focused on the analysis of new data on CO2, CH4, and N2O total columns (TCs) retrieved from high resolution IR solar spectra acquired during 2009–2022 at the NDACC atmospheric monitoring station of St. Petersburg State University (STP station, 59.88°N, 29.83°E, 20 m asl.). The paper provides information on the FTIR system (Fourier-transform infrared) installed at the STP station, and an overview of techniques used for the CO2, CH4, and N2O retrievals. Trends of key greenhouse gases and their confidence levels were evaluated using an original approach which combines the Lomb–Scargle method with the cross-validation and bootstrapping techniques. As a result, the following fourteen-year (2009–2022) trends of TCs have been revealed: (0.56 ± 0.01) % yr−1 for CO2; (0.46 ± 0.02) % yr−1 for CH4; (0.28 ± 0.01) % yr−1 for N2O. A comparison with trends based on the EMAC numerical modeling data was carried out. The trends of greenhouse gases observed at the STP site are consistent with the results of the in situ monitoring performed at the same geographical location, and with the independent estimates of the global volume mixing ratio growth rates obtained by the GAW network and the NOAA Global Monitoring Laboratory. There is reasonable agreement between the CH4 and N2O TC trends for 2009–2019, which have been derived from FTIR measurements at three locations: the STP site, Izaña Observatory and the University of Toronto Atmospheric Observatory. Carbon dioxide (CO2) is a known greenhouse gas and one of the largest contributors to global warming in the Earth's atmosphere. The remote detection and measurement of CO2 from industrial emissions are not routinely carried out and are typically calculated from the fuel combusted or measured directly within ducted vents. However, these methods are not applicable for the quantification of fugitive emissions of CO2. This work presents the results of remote measurement of CO2 emissions using the differential absorption lidar (DIAL) technique at a wavelength of ~2 µm. The results from the DIAL measurements compare well with simultaneous in-stack measurements, these datasets were plotted against each other and can be described by a linear regression of y (t/h) = 1.04 x − 0.02, suggesting any bias in the DIAL data is likely small. Moreover, using the definition outlined in EN 15267-3 a lower detection limit of 0.12 t/h was estimated for the 2 µm wavelength DIAL data, this is three orders of magnitude lower than the corresponding CO2 detection limit measured by NPL in the 1.5 µm wavelength region. Comparing satellite retrieval with high-precision ground observations is an essential component for the validation of CO2 satellite products. The initial stage of assessing the bias in retrieval products from satellite and ground sources involves establishing a geographical connection between observations that are temporally and spatially proximate. The primary aim of this paper is to evaluate the influence of variations in neighborhood definitions and colocation methods on the assessment of satellite products and provide quantitative references. To achieve this, a series of experiments were conducted involving the Global Total Column Carbon Observation Network (TCCON) and the OCO-2 satellite. Various spatial-temporal neighborhoods and colocation methods were considered in these experiments. The results indicate that spatial neighborhoods exert a more substantial influence on bias compared to temporal neighborhoods. In the mid-latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere, there is an observed linear increase trend between the difference of OCO-2 and TCCON observations and the spatial neighborhood, with an average increase of 0.32 ppm as the neighborhood size changes from 1 ° to 10 ° . Regarding colocation methods, the simple spatiotemporal geographic constraints tend to overlook changes in the atmospheric state to a certain extent. The target geographic constraint method reduces the bias by 2% to 5% by increasing the proportion of OCO-2 observations targeting TCCON while the method of introducing T700 potential temperature reduces by 2% to 13% by screening the gradient of CO2 concentration change. Moreover, an evident correlation exists between the bias and their corresponding latitudes, with a 0.20 ppm increase in bias observed for every 10 ° increment in latitudes in the Northern Hemisphere. The bias of TCCON and OCO-2 shows a pronounced seasonal regularity, with the highest in summer. Carbon dioxide (CO2) is one of the main greenhouse gases leading to global warming, and the ocean is the largest carbon reservoir on the earth that plays an important role in regulating CO2 concentration on a global scale. The column-averaged dry-air mole fraction of atmospheric CO2 (XCO2) is a key parameter in describing ocean carbon content. In this paper, the Data Interpolation Empirical Orthogonal Function (DINEOF) and the Bayesian Maximum Entropy (BME) methods are combined to interpolate XCO2 data of Orbiting Carbon Observatory 2 (OCO-2) and Orbiting Carbon Observatory 3 (OCO-3) from January to December 2020 occurring within the geographical range of 15–45°N and 120–150°E. At the first stage of our proposed analysis, spatiotemporal information was used by the DINEOF method to perform XCO2 interpolation that improved data coverage; at the second stage, the DINEOF-generated interpolation results were regarded as soft data and were subsequently assimilated using the BME method to obtain improved XCO2 interpolation values. The performance of the synthetic DINEOF–BME interpolation method was evaluated by means of a five-fold cross-validation method. The results showed that the Mean Absolute Error (MAE), the Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), and the Bias of the DINEOF-based OCO-2 and OCO-3 interpolations were 2.106 ppm, 3.046 ppm, and 1.035 ppm, respectively. On the other hand, the MAE, RMSE, and Bias of the cross-validation results obtained by the DINEOF–BME were 1.285 ppm, 2.422 ppm, and −0.085 ppm, respectively, i.e., smaller than the results obtained by DINEOF. In addition, based on the in situ measured XCO2 data provided by the Total Carbon Column Observing Network (TCCON), the original OCO-2 and OCO-3 data were combined and compared with the interpolated products of the synthetic DINEOF–BME framework. The accuracy of the original OCO-2 and OCO-3 products is lower than the DINEOF–BME-generated XCO2 products in terms of MAE (1.751 ppm vs. 2.616 ppm), RMSE (2.877 ppm vs. 3.566 ppm) and Bias (1.379 ppm vs 1.622 ppm), the spatiotemporal coverage of XCO2 product also improved dramatically from 16% to 100%. Lastly, this study demonstrated the feasibility of the synthetic DINEOF–BME approach for XCO2 interpolation purposes and the ability of the BME method to be successfully combined with other techniques. To assess the accuracy of satellite monitoring of anthropogenic CO 2 emissions, inversions of satellite data in SWIR are usually combined with the assimilation of the total CO 2 column into a Kalman filter that reconstructs the sources and sinks of atmospheric CO 2 . To provide error estimates of the total CO 2 column for multi-month assimilation experiments of simulated satellite data, we parametrise these errors using linear regressions. These regression are obtained from a database that links meteorological situations, albedos, and aerosols to the errors in the inversion of the total CO 2 column based on simulated satellite data for those conditions. The errors in this database are explicitly computed using the Bayesian estimation formalism, and the linear regressions are optimised by selecting appropriate predictors and predictants. The traditional field-based measurements of carbon dioxide (pCO2) for inland waters are a snapshot of the conditions on a particular site, which might not adequately represent the pCO2 variation of the entire lake. However, these field measurements can be used in the pCO2 remote sensing modeling and verification. By focusing on inland waters (including lakes, reservoirs, rivers, and streams), this paper reviews the temporal and spatial variability of pCO2 based on published data. The results indicate the significant daily and seasonal variations in pCO2 in lakes. Rivers and streams contain higher pCO2 than lakes and reservoirs in the same climatic zone, and tropical waters typically exhibit higher pCO2 than temperate, boreal, and arctic waters. Due to the temporal and spatial variations of pCO2, it can differ in different inland water types in the same space-time. The estimation of CO2 fluxes in global inland waters showed large uncertainties with a range of 1.40–3.28 Pg C y−1. This paper also reviews existing remote sensing models/algorithms used for estimating pCO2 in sea and coastal waters and presents some perspectives and challenges of pCO2 estimation in inland waters using remote sensing for future studies. To overcome the uncertainties of pCO2 and CO2 emissions from inland waters at the global scale, more reliable and universal pCO2 remote sensing models/algorithms will be needed for mapping the long-term and large-scale pCO2 variations for inland waters. The development of inverse models based on dissolved biogeochemical processes and the machine learning algorithm based on measurement data might be more applicable over longer periods and across larger spatial scales. In addition, it should be noted that the remote sensing-retrieved pCO2/the CO2 concentration values are the instantaneous values at the satellite transit time. A major technical challenge is in the methodology to transform the retrieved pCO2 values on time scales from instant to days/months, which will need further investigations. Understanding the interrelated control and influence processes closely related to pCO2 in the inland waters (including the biological activities, physical mixing, a thermodynamic process, and the air–water gas exchange) is the key to achieving remote sensing models/algorithms of pCO2 in inland waters. The tracking of carbon and aerosol co-emissions is essential for environmental management. Satellite-based atmospheric synoptic observation networks provide large-scale and multifaceted data to help resolve emission behaviors. This study employs a comprehensive analysis of atmospheric dynamics, combustion byproducts, and aerosol characteristics around power plants. Strong correlations between Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) at 500 nm and the column-averaged dry-air mole fraction of carbon dioxide (XCO2) were observed, revealing synchronous peaks in their emission patterns. The investigation into combustion completeness utilized metrics such as the ratio of carbon monoxide (CO)/XCO2 and Black Carbon Extinction (BCEXT)/Total Aerosol Extinction (TOTEXT). Discrepancies in these ratios across cases suggest variations in combustion efficiency and aerosol characteristics. Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) distributions closely mirrored XCO2, indicating consistent emission patterns, while variations in sulfur dioxide (SO2) distributions implied differences in sulfide content in the coal used. The influence of coal composition on AOD/XCO2 ratios was evident, with sulfide content contributing to variations besides combustion efficiency. This multifactorial analysis underscores the complex interplay of combustion completeness, aerosol composition, and coal components in shaping the air quality around power stations. Monitoring atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases (GHGs) like carbon dioxide and methane in near real time and with good spatial resolution is crucial for enhancing our understanding of the sources and sinks of these gases. A novel approach can be proposed using a constellation of small satellites equipped with miniaturized spectrometers having a spectral resolution of a few nanometers. The objective of this study is to describe expected results that can be obtained with a single satellite named Uvsq-Sat NG. The SolAtmos end-to-end simulator and its three tools (IRIS, OptiSpectra, and GHGRetrieval) were developed to evaluate the performance of the spectrometer of the Uvsq-Sat NG mission, which focuses on measuring the main GHGs. The IRIS tool was implemented to provide Top-Of-Atmosphere (TOA) spectral radiances. Four scenes were analyzed (pine forest, deciduous forest, ocean, snow) combined with different aerosol types (continental, desert, maritime, urban). Simulated radiance spectra were calculated based on the wavelength ranges of the Uvsq-Sat NG, which spans from 1200 to 2000 nm. The OptiSpectra tool was used to determine optimal observational settings for the spectrometer, including Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) and integration time. Data derived from IRIS and OptiSpectra served as input for our GHGRetrieval simulation tool, developed to provide greenhouse gas concentrations. The Levenberg–Marquardt algorithm was applied iteratively to fine-tune gas concentrations and model inputs, aligning observed transmittance functions with simulated ones under given environmental conditions. To estimate gas concentrations (CO2, CH4, O2, H2O) and their uncertainties, the Monte Carlo method was used. Based on this analysis, this study demonstrates that a miniaturized spectrometer onboard Uvsq-Sat NG is capable of observing different scenes by adjusting its integration time according to the wavelength. Carbon dioxide (CO2) is the most important long-lived greenhouse gas and can be retrieved using solar absorption spectra recorded by a ground-based Fourier-transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR). In this study, we investigate the CO2 retrieval strategy using the Network for the Detection of Atmospheric Composition Change–Infrared Working Group (NDACC–IRWG) type spectra between August 2018 and April 2022 (~4 years) at Xianghe, China, aiming to find the optimal observed spectra, retrieval window, and spectroscopy. Two spectral regions, near 2600 and 4800 cm−1, are analyzed. The differences in column-averaged dry-air mole fraction of CO2 (XCO2) derived from spectroscopies (ATM18, ATM20, HITRAN2016, and HITRAN2020) can be up to 1.65 ± 0.95 ppm and 7.96 ± 2.02 ppm for NDACC-type 2600 cm−1 and 4800 cm−1 retrievals, respectively, which is mainly due to the CO2 differences in air-broadened Lorentzian HWHM coefficient (γair) and line intensity (S). HITRAN2020 provides the best fitting, and the retrieved CO2 columns and profiles from both 2600 and 4800 cm−1 are compared to the co-located Total Column Carbon Observing Network (TCCON) measurements and the greenhouse gas reanalysis dataset from the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS). The amplitude of XCO2 seasonal variation derived from the NDACC-type (4800 cm−1) is closer to the TCCON measurements than that from the NDACC-type (2600 cm−1). Moreover, the NDACC-type (2600 cm−1) retrievals are strongly affected by the a priori profile. For tropospheric XCO2, the correlation coefficient between NDACC-type (4800 cm−1) and CAMS model is 0.73, which is higher than that between NDACC-type (2600 cm−1) and CAMS model (R = 0.56). The massive increase in the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, especially carbon dioxide (CO2), has had a significant impact on the global climate. Research has revealed that lakes play an important role in the global carbon cycle and that they can shift between the roles of carbon sources and sinks. This study used Landsat satellite images to analyze the spatiotemporal characteristics and factors influencing the CO2 changes in Chagan Lake in China. We conducted six water sampling campaigns at Chagan Lake in 2020–2021 and determined the partial pressure of carbon dioxide (pCO2) from 110 water samples. Landsat surface reflectance was matched with water sampling events within ±7 days of satellite overpasses, yielding 75 matched pairs. A regression analysis indicated strong associations between pCO2 and both the band difference model of the near-infrared band and green band (Band 5-Band 3, R2 = 0.83, RMSE = 27.55 μatm) and the exponential model [((exp(b3) − exp(b5))2/(exp(b3) + exp(b5))2, R2 = 0.82, RMSE = 27.99 μatm]. A comparison between the performances of a linear regression model and a machine learning model found that the XGBoost model had the highest fitting accuracy (R2 = 0.94, RMSE = 16.86 μatm). We used Landsat/OLI images acquired mainly in 2021 to map pCO2 in Chagan Lake during the ice-free period. The pCO2 in the surface water of Chagan Lake showed considerable spatiotemporal variability within a range of 0–200 μatm. pCO2 also showed significant seasonal variations, with the lowest and highest mean values in autumn (30–50 μatm) and summer (120–150 μatm), respectively. Spatially, the pCO2 values in the southeast of Chagan Lake were higher than those in the northwest. The CO2 fluxes were calculated based on the pCO2 and ranged from −3.69 to −2.42 mmol/m2/d, indicating that Chagan Lake was absorbing CO2 (i.e., it was a weak carbon sink). Temperature, chlorophyll a, total suspended matter, and turbidity were found to have reinforcing effects on the overall trend of pCO2, while the Secchi disk depth was negatively correlated with pCO2. Accurate global monitoring of carbon dioxide (CO2) is essential for understanding climate change and informing policy decisions. This study compares column-averaged dry-air mole fractions of CO2 (XCO2) between ACOS_L2_Lite_FP V9r for Japan's Greenhouse Gases Observing Satellite (GOSAT), OCO-2_L2_Lite_FP V10r for the USA's Orbiting Carbon Observatory-2 (OCO-2), and IAPCAS V2.0 for China's Carbon Dioxide Observation Satellite (TANSAT) collectively referred to as GOT, with data from the Total Carbon Column Observing Network (TCCON). Our findings are as follows: (1) Significant data quantity differences exist between OCO-2 and the other satellites, with OCO-2 boasting a data volume 100 times greater. GOT shows the highest data volume between 30–45°N and 20–30°S, but data availability is notably lower near the equator. (2) XCO2 from GOT exhibits similar seasonal variations, with lower concentrations during June, July, and August (JJA) (402.72–403.74 ppm) and higher concentrations during December, January, and February (DJF) (405.74–407.14 ppm). XCO2 levels are higher in the Northern Hemisphere during March, April, and May (MAM) and DJF, while slightly lower during JJA and September, October, and November (SON). (3) The differences in XCO2 (ΔXCO2) reveal that ΔXCO2 between OCO-2 and TANSAT are minor (−0.47 ± 0.28 ppm), whereas the most significant difference is observed between GOSAT and TANSAT (−1.13 ± 0.15 ppm). Minimal differences are seen in SON (with the biggest difference between GOSAT and TANSAT: −0.84 ± 0.12 ppm), while notable differences occur in DJF (with the biggest difference between GOSAT and TANSAT: −1.43 ± 0.17 ppm). Regarding latitudinal variations, distinctions between OCO-2 and TANSAT are most pronounced in JJA and SON. (4) Compared to TCCON, XCO2 from GOT exhibits relatively high determination coefficients (R2 > 0.8), with GOSAT having the highest root mean square error (RMSE = 1.226 ppm, <1.5 ppm), indicating a strong relationship between ground-based observed and retrieved values. This research contributes significantly to our understanding of the spatial characteristics of global XCO2. Furthermore, it offers insights that can inform the analysis of differences in the inversion of carbon sources and sinks within assimilation systems when incorporating XCO2 data from satellite observations. TanSat-2, the next-generation Chinese greenhouse gas monitoring satellite for measuring carbon dioxide (CO 2 ), has a new city-scale observing mode. We assess the theoretical capability of TanSat-2 to quantify integrated urban CO 2 emissions over the cities of Beijing, Jinan, Los Angeles, and Paris. A high-resolution emission inventory and a column-averaged CO 2 ( X CO 2 ) transport model are used to build an urban CO 2 inversion system. We design a series of numerical experiments describing this observing system to evaluate the impacts of sampling patterns and X CO 2 measurement errors on inferring urban CO 2 emissions. We find that the correction in systematic and random flux errors is correlated with the signal-to-noise ratio of satellite measurements. The reduction in systematic flux errors for the four cities are sizable, but are subject to unbiased satellite sampling and favorable meteorological conditions (i.e., less cloud cover and lower wind speed). The corresponding correction to the random flux error is 19–28%. Even though clear-sky satellite data from TanSat-2 have the potential to reduce flux errors for cities with high CO 2 emissions, quantifying urban emissions by satellite-based measurements is subject to additional limitations and uncertainties. Coal-fired power plants, as major anthropogenic CO2 emission sources, constitute one of the largest contributors to global greenhouse gas emissions. Accurately calculating the dispersion process of CO2 emissions from these point sources is crucial, as it will aid in quantifying CO2 emissions using remote sensing measurements. Employing the Lagrangian Particle Dispersion Theory Model (LPDTM), our study involves modeling CO2 diffusion from point sources. Firstly, we incorporated high-resolution DEM (Digital Elevation Model) and artificial building elements obtained through the Adaptive Deep Learning Location Matching Method, which is involved in CO2 simulation. The accuracy of the results was verified using meteorological stations and aircraft measurements. Additionally, we quantitatively analyzed the influence of terrain and artificial building characteristics on high spatial resolution atmospheric CO2 diffusion simulations, revealing the significance of surface characteristics in dispersion modeling. To validate the accuracy of the LPDTM in high-resolution CO2 diffusion simulation, a comparative experiment was conducted at a power plant in Yangzhou, Jiangsu Province, China. The simulated result was compared with observation from aerial flights, yielding the R2 (Correlation Coefficient) of 0.76, the RMSE (Root Mean Square Error) of 0.267 ppm, and the MAE (Mean Absolute Error) of 0.2315 ppm for the comparison of 73 pixels where the plume intersected with flight trajectories. The findings demonstrate a high level of consistency between the modeled CO2 point source plume morphology and concentration quantification and the actual observed outcomes. This study carried out a quantitative assessment of the influence of surface features on high-resolution atmospheric CO2 point source diffusion simulations, resulting in an enhanced accuracy of the simulated CO2 concentration field. Nitrous oxide (N2O) is a potent and long-lived greenhouse gas that contributes to global warming with a global warming potential (GWP) 298 times that of carbon dioxide (CO2). In this paper, we analyzed the trend of N2O concentration in vertical layers of the stratosphere from 2005 to 2020 using the N2O observed from the Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS) that is on board the Aura satellite. We found that the local N2O concentration showed a downward trend in the lower stratosphere but rose or fluctuated in the upper stratosphere. The reduction reached −5 ppb/yr at pressure levels of 31.62 hPa and 68.13 hPa, with a confidence level of over 90%. The growth was around 1–2 ppb/yr in the upper stratosphere. In addition, a concentration anomaly was observed in the tropical stratosphere in 2013. After the appearance of this anomaly, the N2O concentration in the middle and lower layers of the tropical stratosphere was lower than before 2013. We speculated that the enhancement of the Brewer–Dobson circulation (BDC) upwelling before and after stratospheric sudden warming (SSW) is the main reason for the abnormal concentration distribution in 2013. Stratospheric N2O has changed significantly in the past 16 years with the mutual coupling effect of BDC and SSW and such changes can have further impact on the chemical equilibrium and radiation balance in the stratosphere, as well as on the persistent climate-warming trend. The Greenhouse Gases Monitoring Instrument (GMI), on board the Chinese Gaofen-5 (GF-5) satellite, provides rich observation data for the global remote sensing of atmospheric CO2. To meet the high-precision satellite retrieval needs of atmospheric CO2, this paper designs a coupled bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) CO2 retrieval (CBCR) method, which describes the surface reflectance characteristics by the BRDF, corrects for atmospheric scattering based on full physics retrieval theory, and ensures the stable retrieval of multiple parameters and atmospheric CO2 by enriching prior constraints. Theoretical analysis shows that the influence of atmospheric scattering induced by the surface bidirectional reflectance characteristics is significantly related to the aerosol optical depth (AOD), solar zenith angle (SZA), and viewing zenith angle (VZA). The validation of GMI CO2 retrievals shows that the CBCR method significantly reduced the influence of the surface bidirectional reflectance characteristics under high AOD and high SZA conditions, decreased the atmospheric CO2 retrieval error from 0.58 ± 5.64 ppm to −1.33 ± 3.13 ppm, and increased the correlation with the temporal variation of actual atmospheric CO2 from 34.7 to 76.8%. Our CBCR method can correct the influence of atmospheric scattering induced by the surface bidirectional reflectance characteristics on atmospheric CO2 retrieval, and this work demonstrates that describing the surface reflectance characteristics by using BRDF is a promising idea in the field of satellite CO2 retrievals. Methane (CH4) is the second most significant contributor to climate change after carbon dioxide (CO2), accounting for approximately 20% of the contributions from all well-mixed greenhouse gases. Understanding the spatiotemporal distributions and the relevant long-term trends is crucial to identifying the sources, sinks, and impacts on climate. Hyperspectral thermal infrared (TIR) sounders, including the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS), the Cross-track Infrared Sounder (CrIS), and the Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer (IASI), have been used to measure global CH4 concentrations since 2002. This study analyzed nearly 20 years of data from AIRS and CrIS and confirmed a significant increase in CH4 concentrations in the mid-upper troposphere (around 400 hPa) from 2003 to 2020, with a total increase of approximately 85 ppb, representing a +4.8% increase in 18 years. The rate of increase was derived using global satellite TIR measurements, which are consistent with in situ measurements, indicating a steady increase starting in 2007 and becoming stronger in 2014. The study also compared CH4 concentrations derived from the AIRS and CrIS against ground-based measurements from NOAA Global Monitoring Laboratory (GML) and found phase shifts in the seasonal cycles in the middle to high latitudes of the northern hemisphere, which is attributed to the influence of stratospheric CH4 that varies at different latitudes. CO2 undisputedly affects global temperature change, but the specific impact of change in atmospheric CO2 concentration on regional warming remains to be quantified, especially in different climatic backgrounds. Taking the Loess Plateau as the research area, this study quantified the effect of CO2 elevation on regional temperature change based on a single-factor sensitivity experiment of the regional Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) climatic model, and the results revealed the following: (i) The correlation coefficient between monthly mean values of temperature simulated by the WRF model and the observed values reached 0.96 (p < 0.01), and the overall spatial trends of simulated and observed temperatures increased from the northwest to the southeast. (ii) CO2 concentration increased from 370.70 ppm in 2000 to 414.54 ppm in 2020, and the Loess Plateau region warmed by 0.04 and 0.06 °C under the MODIS land cover of 2000 and 2020, respectively. This indicates that increase in CO2 concentration over the Loess Plateau has greater impact than land cover change on regional temperature change. (iii) As CO2 concentration increased, the maximum fluctuation of temperature in summer exceeded 2.0 °C, while the fluctuations in spring (0.72 °C), autumn (0.77 °C), and winter (0.15 °C) were relatively small, indicating that summer temperature is most sensitive to CO2 concentration change. Monitoring tropical and subtropical forest soil CO2 emission efflux (FSCO2) is crucial for understanding the global carbon cycle and terrestrial ecosystem respiration. In this study, we addressed the challenge of low spatiotemporal resolution in FSCO2 monitoring by combining data fusion and model methods to improve the accuracy of quantitative inversion. We used time series Landsat 8 LST and MODIS LST fusion images and a linear mixed effect model to estimate FSCO2 at watershed scale. Our results show that modeling without random factors, and the use of Fusion LST as the fixed predictor, resulted in 47% (marginal R2 = 0.47) of FSCO2 variability in the Monthly random effect model, while it only accounted for 19% of FSCO2 variability in the Daily random effect model and 7% in the Seasonally random effect model. However, the inclusion of random effects in the model's parameterization improved the performance of both models. The Monthly random effect model that performed optimally had an explanation rate of 55.3% (conditional R2 = 0.55 and t value > 1.9) for FSCO2 variability and yielded the smallest deviation from observed FSCO2. Our study highlights the importance of incorporating random effects and using Fusion LST as a fixed predictor to improve the accuracy of FSCO2 monitoring in tropical and subtropical forests. The laser heterodyne radiometer (LHR) has the advantages of miniaturization, low cost, and high spectral-resolution as a ground-verification instrument for satellite observation of atmospheric trace-gas concentration. To verify the accuracy of LHR measurements, a new performance evaluation method is presented here, based on an ASE source and a CO2 absorption cell in the laboratory. Preliminary simulation analysis based on the system parameters of LHR is carried out for the performance analysis and data processing of this new combined test system. According to the simulation results, at wavelength deviation of fewer than 30 MHz, the retrieval error, which increases with bandwidth, can obtain an accuracy of 1 ppm within the bandwidth range of the photodetector (1.2 GHz) when this instrument line shape (ILS) is calibrated. Meanwhile, when the filter bandwidth is less than 200 MHz, the maximum error without ILS correction does not exceed 0.07 ppm. Moreover, with an ideal 60 MHz bandpass filter without ILS correction, LHR's signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) should be greater than 20 to achieve retrieval results of less than 1 ppm. When the SNR is 100, the retrieval error is 0.206 and 0.265 ppm, corresponding to whether the system uncertainties (temperature and pressure) are considered. Considering all the error terms, the retrieval error (geometrically added) is 0.528 ppm at a spectral resolution of 0.004 cm−1, which meets the measurement accuracy requirement of 1 ppm. In the experiment, the retrieval and analysis of the heterodyne signals are performed for different XCO2 with [400 ppm, 420 ppm] in the absorption cell. Experimental results match well with the simulation, and confirm the accuracy of LHR with an error of less than 1 ppm with an SNR of 100. The LHR will be used to measure atmospheric-CO2 column concentrations in the future, and could be effective validation instruments on the ground for spaceborne CO2-sounding sensors. Humans have altered the earth in unprecedented ways, and these changes have profound implications for global climate change. However, the impacts of human pressures on carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions over long time scales have not yet been clarified. Here, we used the human footprint index (HF), which estimates the ecological footprint of humans in a given location, to explore the impacts of human pressures on CO2 emissions in China from 2000 to 2017. Human pressures (+13.6%) and CO2 emissions (+198.3%) in China are still on the rise during 2000–2017 and are unevenly distributed spatially. There was a significant positive correlation between human pressures and CO2 emissions in China, and northern China is the main driver of this correlation. The increase of CO2 emissions in China slowed down after 2011. Carbon dioxide (CO2) is a known greenhouse gas and one of the largest contributors to global warming in the Earth’s atmosphere. The remote detection and measurement of CO2 from industrial emissions are not routinely carried out and are typically calculated from the fuel combusted or measured directly within ducted vents. However, these methods are not applicable for the quantification of fugitive emissions of CO2. This work presents the results of remote measurement of CO2 emissions using the differential absorption lidar (DIAL) technique at a wavelength of ~2 µm. The results from the DIAL measurements compare well with simultaneous in-stack measurements, these datasets were plotted against each other and can be described by a linear regression of y (t/h) = 1.04 x − 0.02, suggesting any bias in the DIAL data is likely small. Moreover, using the definition outlined in EN 15267-3 a lower detection limit of 0.12 t/h was estimated for the 2 µm wavelength DIAL data, this is three orders of magnitude lower than the corresponding CO2 detection limit measured by NPL in the 1.5 µm wavelength region. Thus, this paper demonstrates the feasibility of high-resolution, ground-based DIAL measurements for quantifying industrial CO2 emissions.

A micro-pulse lidar system incorporating differential absorption lidar (DIAL) and coherent Doppler wind lidar (CDWL) is proposed and demonstrated. Due to the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the superconducting nanowire single-photon detector (SNSPD), the DIAL channel achieves high sensitivity in CO2 measurement. Meanwhile, the CDWL channel is used to obtain the horizontal wind field. In the process of the optimization and calibration of the DIAL receiver, specifically, mode scrambling and temperature control of the connecting fiber between the telescope and the SNSPD enhance the stability and robustness of the system. Horizontal scanning of the CO2 concentration and the wind field is carried out in a 6 km range over a scanning span of 60° with a radial resolution of 150 m and 15 s. The results show that the hybrid lidar system captures the spatial distribution of CO2 concentration and the wind field simultaneously. The horizontal net CO2 flux in a radius of 6 km is estimated by integrating the CO2 concentration and the wind transport vector, indicating different characteristics of horizontal net CO2 fluxes in an industrial area, a university campus, and a park. During most of the experiment, CO2 flux remained positive in the industrial area, but balances fell to nearly zero on the campus and in the park. Air quality monitoring in cities is significant for both human health and environment. Here, an innovative miniaturized active air sampler wearable by free-flying birds is presented. The device integrates a GPS logger and atmospheric calibrated sensors allowing for high spatiotemporal resolution measurements of carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration, barometric pressure, air temperature, and relative humidity. A field campaign, carried out from January to June 2021, involved the repeated release of homing pigeons (Columba livia) from downtown Rome (Italy), to sample the air on their way back to the loft, located in a rural area out of the city. The measurements suggest the importance of green urban areas in decreasing CO2 levels. Moreover, a positive relation between CO2 levels, relative humidity, and air temperature was revealed. In contrast, a negative relation with distance from the point of release, month, and time of day was found. Flight speed and the altitude of flight were related to rising CO2 levels. The easy use of such devices paves the way for the application of miniaturized air samplers to other synanthropic species (i.e., gulls), making birds convenient biomonitors for the urban environment. Sand and dust storms (SDSs) are common environmental hazards in spring in Asian continent and have significant impacts on human health, weather, and climate. While many technologies have been developed to monitor SDSs, this study investigates the spectral characteristics of SDSs in satellite hyperspectral infrared observations and propose a new methodology to monitor the storms. An SDS emission and scattering index (SESI) is based on the differential responses of infrared CO2 shortwave and longwave IR bands to the scattering and emission of sand and dust particles. For a severe dust storm process during 14–17 March 2021, the SESI calculated by the Cross-track Infrared Sounder (CrIS) observations shows very negative values in the dusty region and is consistent with the spatial distribution of dust identified from the true-color RGB imagery and the dust RGB imagery of the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) on the NOAA-20 Satellite. The use of the SESI index in the near-surface layer allows for monitoring of the dust storm process and enables an effective classification between surface variations and dust weather events. Atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) is recognized as the most important component of the greenhouse gases, the concentration of which has increased rapidly since the pre-industrial era due to anthropogenic emissions of greenhouse gases (GHG). The accurate monitoring of carbon dioxide is essential to study the global carbon cycle and radiation budget on Earth. The Aerosol and Carbon Detection Lidar (ACDL) instrument onboard the Atmospheric Environmental Monitoring Satellite (AEMS) was successfully launched in April 2022, which allows a new perspective to quantify the global spatial distribution of atmospheric CO2 with high accuracy. In this work, the impact of the Doppler shift on CO2 measurements for an integrated-path differential absorption (IPDA) light detection and ranging (lidar) system was evaluated to meet the weighted column-averaged mixing ratio of carbon dioxide (XCO2) measurement requirements of less than one part per million (ppm). The measurement uncertainties due to the Doppler shift were first evaluated in airborne IPDA observations. The result shows that most of the Doppler shift is in the range of 6–8 MHz, resulting in 0.26-0.39 ppm deviations in the XCO2 results. The deviations between the XCO2 retrievals and in situ measurements decreased to 0.16 ppm after the correction of the Doppler shift from 11:28:29 to 11:28:49 in the flight campaign. In addition, the online Doppler shift accounts for 98% of the deviations between XCO2 retrievals and in situ measurements. Furthermore, the impact of the Doppler shift on ACDL measurements is also assessed. The differences between the XCO2 retrievals with and without Doppler shift are used to quantify measurement uncertainties due to the Doppler effect. The simulations reveal that a pointing misalignment of 0.067 mrad can lead to a mean bias of about 0.30 ppm (0.072%) in the CO2 column. In addition, CO2 measurements are more sensitive to the Doppler shift at high altitudes for IPDA lidar, so the largest differences in the CO2 columns are found on the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau in China. In view of global warming, caused by the increase in the concentration of greenhouse gases, China has proposed a series of carbon emission reduction policies. It is necessary to obtain the spatiotemporal distribution of carbon emissions accurately. Nighttime light data is recognized as an important basis for carbon emission estimation. A large number of research results show that there is a positive correlation between nighttime light intensity and carbon emission. However, in the current context of China's industrial reforms, this positive relationship may not be entirely correct. First, we correct the nighttime light data from different satellites and established a long-term series data set. Then, we verify the positive correlation between nighttime light and carbon emission. However, the time scale of emission data often lags, and the carbon concentration data are released earlier and are more accurate than emission data. Therefore, we propose to investigate the relationship between nighttime light and carbon concentration. It is found that there may be different correlations between nighttime light and the carbon concentration, due to different urban industrial structure and development planning. Therefore, by exploring the relationship between nighttime light and the carbon concentration, the existing carbon emission estimation model can be modified to improve the accuracy of the emission model. The Chinese carbon dioxide measurement satellite (TanSat) has collected a large number of measurements in the solar calibration mode. To improve the accuracy of XCO2 retrieval, the Instrument Line Shape (ILS, also known as the slit function) must be accurately determined. In this study, we characterized the on-orbit ILS of TanSat by fitting measured solar irradiance from 2017 to 2018 with a well-calibrated high-spectral-resolution solar reference spectrum. We used various advanced analytical functions and the stretch/sharpen of the tabulated preflight ILS to represent the ILS for each wavelength window, footprint, and band. Using super Gaussian+P7 and the stretch/sharpen functions substantially reduced the fitting residual in O 2 A-band and weak CO 2 band compared with using the preflight ILS. We found that the difference between the derived ILS width and on-ground preflight ILS was up to −3.5% in the weak CO 2 band, depending on footprint and wavelength. The large amplitude of the ILS wings, depending on the wavelength, footprint, and bands, indicated possible uncorrected stray light. Broadening ILS wings will cause additive offset (filling-in) on the deep absorption lines of the spectra, which we confirmed using offline bias correction of the solar-induced fluorescence retrieval. We estimated errors due to the imperfect ILS using simulated TanSat spectra. The results of the simulations showed that XCO2 retrieval is sensitive to errors in the ILS, and 4% uncertainty in the full width of half maximum (FWHM) or 20% uncertainty in the ILS wings can induce an error of up to 1 ppm in the XCO2 retrieval. Multiple upwelling systems develop in the Indian Ocean during the summer monsoon. The Sri Lanka dome (SLD), which occurs in the open ocean off the east coast of Sri Lanka from June to September, is distinct from those near the coast. The SLD is characterized by uplifted thermocline and increased chlorophyll concentration. Mechanisms of the upwelling and its biogeochemical response are not well understood. Here, we explored the dynamics of the chlorophyll and sea-to-air CO2 flux in the SLD using ocean color and altimetry remote sensing data, together with other reanalysis products. We found that the occurrence of high chlorophyll concentration and sea-to-air CO2 flux happens along the pathway of the southwest monsoon current (SMC). The annual cycle of chlorophyll in the SLD has a one-month lag relative to that in the southern coast of Sri Lanka. The positive wind stress curl that forms in the SLD during the summer does not fully explain the seasonal chlorophyll maximum. Transport of the SMC, eddy activity, and associated frontal processes also play an important role in regulating the variability in chlorophyll. In the SLD, upwelled subsurface water has excess dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) relative to the conventional Redfield ratio between DIC and nutrients; thus, upwelling and sub-mesoscale processes determine this region to be a net carbon source to the atmosphere. We found that significant errors occurred when diurnal data instead of diurnal–nocturnal data were used to calculate the daily sea-air CO2 flux (F). As the errors were mainly associated with the partial pressure of CO2 in seawater (pCO2w) and the sea surface temperature (SST) in the control experiment, pCO2w and SST equations were established, which are called the nocturnal effect of the CO2 flux. The root-mean-square error between the real daily CO2 flux (Freal) and the daily CO2 flux corrected for the nocturnal effect (Fcom) was 11.93 mmol m−2 d−1, which was significantly lower than that between the Freal value and the diurnal CO2 flux (Fday) (46.32 mmol m−2 d−1). Thus, the errors associated with using diurnal data to calculate the CO2 flux can be reduced by accounting for the nocturnal effect. The mean global daily CO2 flux estimated based on the nocturnal effect and the sub-regional pCO2w algorithm (cor_Fcom) was −6.86 mol m−2 y−1 (September 2020–August 2021), which was smaller by 0.75 mol m−2 y−1 than that based solely on the sub-regional pCO2w algorithm (day_Fcom). The Greenhouse Gases Observing Satellite (GOSAT) can help to ascertain the global distribution of carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4), and how the sources and sinks of these gases vary by season, year, and location. However, the data provided by the GOSAT level 2 and 3 products have certain limitations due to their lack of spatial and temporal information; even with the application of the kriging geostatistical method on the level 2 products, the processing algorithms still need further upgrades. In this study, we apply an empirical orthogonal function (EOF)-based method on the GOSAT L3 products (137 images, from January 2010 to May 2021) to estimate the column average of carbon dioxide and methane (XCO2–XCH4) within the entire Earth. The reconstructed results are validated against the Total Carbon Column Observing Network (i.e., TCCON), with 31 in situ stations, and GOSAT L4B column-averaged data, using 107 layers. The results show an excellent agreement with the TCCON data and exhibit an R-squared coefficient of 0.95 regarding the CO2 measurements and 0.86 regarding the CH4 measurements. Soil moisture impacts the biosphere–atmosphere exchange of CO2 and CH4 and plays an important role in the terrestrial carbon cycle. A better representation of soil moisture would improve coupled carbon–water dynamics in terrestrial ecosystem models and could potentially improve model estimates of large-scale carbon fluxes and climate feedbacks. Here, we investigate using soil moisture observations from the Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) satellite mission to inform simulated carbon fluxes in the global terrestrial ecosystem model LPJ-wsl. Results suggest that the direct insertion of SMAP reduces the bias in simulated soil moisture at in situ measurement sites by 40%, with a greater improvement at temperate sites. A wavelet analysis between the model and measurements from 26 FLUXNET sites suggests that the assimilated run modestly reduces the bias of simulated carbon fluxes for boreal and subtropical sites at 1–2-month time scales. At regional scales, SMAP soil moisture can improve the estimated responses of CO2 and CH4 fluxes to extreme events such as the 2018 European drought and the 2019 rainfall event in the Sudd (Southern Sudan) wetlands. The simulated improvements to land–surface carbon fluxes using the direct insertion of SMAP are shown across a variety of timescales, which suggests the potential of SMAP soil moisture in improving the model representation of carbon–water coupling. Nitrous oxide (N2O) is the third most abundant anthropogenous greenhouse gas (after carbon dioxide and methane), with a long atmospheric lifetime and a continuously increasing concentration due to human activities, making it an important gas to monitor. In this work, we present a new method to retrieve N2O concentration profiles (with up to two degrees of freedom) from each cloud-free satellite observation by the Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer (IASI), using spectral micro-windows in the N2O ν 3 band, the Radiative Transfer for TOVS (RTTOV) tools and the Tikhonov regularization scheme. A time series of ten years (2011–2020) of IASI N2O profiles and integrated partial columns has been produced and validated with collocated ground-based Network for the Detection of Atmospheric Composition Change (NDACC) and Total Carbon Column Observing Network (TCCON) data. The importance of consistency in the ancillary data used for the retrieval for generating consistent time series has been demonstrated. The Nitrous Oxide Profiling from Infrared Radiances (NOPIR) N2O partial columns are of very good quality, with a positive bias of 1.8 to 4% with respect to the ground-based data, which is less than the sum of uncertainties of the compared values. At high latitudes, the comparisons are a bit worse, due to either a known bias in the ground-based data, or to a higher uncertainty in both ground-based and satellite retrievals. With the aid of a multi-instrument data set gathered by the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution (MAVEN) during ten selected periods, we make detailed calculations of the CO 2 + Ultraviolet Doublet (UVD) emission brightness profiles which are then compared to the Imaging Ultraviolet Spectrometer limb observations. Our calculations confirm that the photoionization of atmospheric CO 2 is the predominant process driving CO 2 + UVD emission at high altitudes, whereas the photoelectron impact ionization of CO 2 becomes more important at low altitudes. The data–model comparisons show good agreement near and above the emission peak at around 120 km with an intensity of 27–45 kR. A special case is found for period 3 coincident with a regional dust storm during which the peak altitude rose by 20 km. Of particular interest is the significant discrepancy below the peak, which is likely associated with the uncertainties in either atmospheric density or incident solar irradiance. A detailed investigation suggests that the latter uncertainty is more likely responsible for such a discrepancy, in that the solar irradiance shortward of a wavelength threshold below 30 nm should be adjusted to achieve reasonable data–model agreement over the entire altitude range. Carbon dioxide (CO2) is one of the main greenhouse gases leading to global warming, and the ocean is the largest carbon reservoir on the earth that plays an important role in regulating CO2 concentration on a global scale. The column-averaged dry-air mole fraction of atmospheric CO2 (XCO2) is a key parameter in describing ocean carbon content. In this paper, the Data Interpolation Empirical Orthogonal Function (DINEOF) and the Bayesian Maximum Entropy (BME) methods are combined to interpolate XCO2 data of Orbiting Carbon Observatory 2 (OCO-2) and Orbiting Carbon Observatory 3 (OCO-3) from January to December 2020 occurring within the geographical range of 15–45°N and 120–150°E. At the first stage of our proposed analysis, spatiotemporal information was used by the DINEOF method to perform XCO2 interpolation that improved data coverage; at the second stage, the DINEOF-generated interpolation results were regarded as soft data and were subsequently assimilated using the BME method to obtain improved XCO2 interpolation values. The performance of the synthetic DINEOF–BME interpolation method was evaluated by means of a five-fold cross-validation method. The results showed that the Mean Absolute Error (MAE), the Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), and the Bias of the DINEOF-based OCO-2 and OCO-3 interpolations were 2.106 ppm, 3.046 ppm, and 1.035 ppm, respectively. On the other hand, the MAE, RMSE, and Bias of the cross-validation results obtained by the DINEOF–BME were 1.285 ppm, 2.422 ppm, and −0.085 ppm, respectively, i.e., smaller than the results obtained by DINEOF. In addition, based on the in situ measured XCO2 data provided by the Total Carbon Column Observing Network (TCCON), the original OCO-2 and OCO-3 data were combined and compared with the interpolated products of the synthetic DINEOF–BME framework. The accuracy of the original OCO-2 and OCO-3 products is lower than the DINEOF–BME-generated XCO2 products in terms of MAE (1.751 ppm vs. 2.616 ppm), RMSE (2.877 ppm vs. 3.566 ppm) and Bias (1.379 ppm vs 1.622 ppm), the spatiotemporal coverage of XCO2 product also improved dramatically from 16% to 100%. Lastly, this study demonstrated the feasibility of the synthetic DINEOF–BME approach for XCO2 interpolation purposes and the ability of the BME method to be successfully combined with other techniques.

The satellite-based remote-sensing detection of CO2 can provide long-term and continuous observations at the global scale, and is the primary observational approach to monitoring CO2 changes. Surface albedo and aerosol are two significant challenges for retrieving CO2 concentrations from near-infrared remote-sensing data. This research addressed the dependence of radiance sensitivities on CO2 concentration, aerosol, surface albedo, and water vapor. The band ratio method was used to retrieve CO2 with band selection of the high- and low-sensitivity channels to restrain the influence of surface albedo and aerosol. Results showed that the band ratio method had better efficiency at reducing the impact of aerosol and surface albedo than that of the optical estimation method. The retrieval error of aerosol was reduced by 2.5% overall. We validated the band ratio method retrieval results with two TCCON sites and the GOSAT L3 product. Pearson's correlation coefficient, mean bias, mean absolute bias, and root mean squared error of the monthly retrieval data of the band ratio method showed high agreement between the TCCON in Park Falls and Wollongong. Mars's polar regions are covered by kilometers-thick layered deposits which carry a record of the planet's climate history. The deposition and volatilization of the shallow CO2 deposits in the south pole have a large impact on the planet's atmosphere and environment. This research focuses on the timing variation of the thickness of the shallow deposits based on the SHARAD data collected from the past 11 terrestrial years, and analysis of the contributing factors based on the volatilization and deposition mechanisms of surface and subsurface materials. In this work, we selected more than four thousand data points, covering several seasons and Martian years, to extract radar echoes and calculate the thickness changes in the subsurface layer over time. We found that the thickness of the CO2 layer becomes thinner in the summer, with seasonal variation in the range of ~16–45 m. The thickness variations have a Gaussian-like distribution and do not increase with the distance between the compared node pair, implying that the phenomenon is not caused by regional differences. The overall thickness within the 11 terrestrial years does not show a clear trend of thickening or thinning, indicating a moderate vertical change of the southern deposits. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Vegetation regulates the exchange of terrestrial carbon and water fluxes and connects the biosphere, hydrosphere, and atmosphere. Over the last four decades, vegetation greening has been observed worldwide using satellite technology. China has also experienced a notably widespread greening trend. However, the responsiveness of vegetation dynamics to elevated CO2 concentration, climate change, and human activities remains unclear. In this study, we attempted to explore the impact of natural (precipitation, air temperature), biogeochemical (CO2), and anthropogenic drivers (nighttime light, afforestation area) on changes in vegetation greenness in the Haihe River Basin (HRB) during 2002–2018 at the county-level. We further determined the major factors affecting the variation in satellite-derived normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) from moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer (MODIS) for each county. The results indicated that over 85% of the counties had a significantly increased NDVI trend, and the average linear trend of annual NDVI across the study region was 0.0037 per year. The largest contributor to the NDVI trend was CO2 (mean contribution 45%), followed by human activities (mean contribution of 27%). Additionally, afforestation was a pronounced driving force for NDVI changes in mountainous areas, resulting from ecosystem restoration efforts. Our findings emphasize the crucial role of CO2 fertilization in vegetation cover change, while considering CO2 concentration, climate change, and human activities, and shed light on the significant influences of afforestation programs on water resources, especially in mountainous areas. The aim of this work is to develop and test a simple methodology for CO2 emission retrieval applied to hyperspectral PRISMA data. Model simulations are used to infer the best SWIR channels for CO2 retrieval purposes, the weight coefficients for a Continuum Interpolated Band Ratio (CIBR) index calculation, and the factor for converting the CIBR values to XCO2 (ppm) estimations above the background. This method has been applied to two test cases relating to the LUSI volcanic area (Indonesia) and the Solfatara area in the caldera of Campi Flegrei (Italy). The results show the capability of the method to detect and estimate CO2 emissions at a local spatial scale and the potential of PRISMA acquisitions for gas retrieval. The limits of the method are also evaluated and discussed, indicating a satisfactory application for medium/strong emissions and over soils with a reflectance greater than 0.1. The continuing increase in atmospheric CO2 concentration caused by anthropogenic CO2 emissions significantly contributes to climate change driven by global warming. Satellite measurements of long-term CO2 data with global coverage improve our understanding of global carbon cycles. However, the sensitivity of the space-borne measurements to anthropogenic emissions on a regional scale is less explored because of data sparsity in space and time caused by impacts from geophysical factors such as aerosols and clouds. Here, we used global land mapping column averaged dry-air mole fractions of CO2 (XCO2) data (Mapping-XCO2), generated from a spatio-temporal geostatistical method using GOSAT and OCO-2 observations from April 2009 to December 2020, to investigate the responses of XCO2 to anthropogenic emissions at both global and regional scales. Our results show that the long-term trend of global XCO2 growth rate from Mapping-XCO2, which is consistent with that from ground observations, shows interannual variations caused by the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO). The spatial distributions of XCO2 anomalies, derived from removing background from the Mapping-XCO2 data, reveal XCO2 enhancements of about 1.5–3.5 ppm due to anthropogenic emissions and seasonal biomass burning in the wintertime. Furthermore, a clustering analysis applied to seasonal XCO2 clearly reveals the spatial patterns of atmospheric transport and terrestrial biosphere CO2 fluxes, which help better understand and analyze regional XCO2 changes that are associated with atmospheric transport. To quantify regional anomalies of CO2 emissions, we selected three representative urban agglomerations as our study areas, including the Beijing-Tian-Hebei region (BTH), the Yangtze River Delta urban agglomerations (YRD), and the high-density urban areas in the eastern USA (EUSA). The results show that the XCO2 anomalies in winter well capture the several-ppm enhancement due to anthropogenic CO2 emissions. For BTH, YRD, and EUSA, regional positive anomalies of 2.47 ± 0.37 ppm, 2.20 ± 0.36 ppm, and 1.38 ± 0.33 ppm, respectively, can be detected during winter months from 2009 to 2020. These anomalies are slightly higher than model simulations from CarbonTracker-CO2. In addition, we compared the variations in regional XCO2 anomalies and NO2 columns during the lockdown of the COVID-19 pandemic from January to March 2020. Interestingly, the results demonstrate that the variations of XCO2 anomalies have a positive correlation with the decline of NO2 columns during this period. These correlations, moreover, are associated with the features of emitting sources. These results suggest that we can use simultaneously observed NO2, because of its high detectivity and co-emission with CO2, to assist the analysis and verification of CO2 emissions in future studies. High spatial resolution carbon dioxide (CO2) flux inversion systems are needed to support the global stocktake required by the Paris Agreement and to complement the bottom-up emission inventories. Based on the work of Zhang, a regional CO2 flux inversion system capable of assimilating the column-averaged dry air mole fractions of CO2 (XCO2) retrieved from Orbiting Carbon Observatory-2 (OCO-2) observations had been developed. To evaluate the system, under the constraints of the initial state and boundary conditions extracted from the CarbonTracker 2017 product (CT2017), the annual CO2 flux over the contiguous United States in 2016 was inverted (1.08 Pg C yr−1) and compared with the corresponding posterior CO2 fluxes extracted from OCO-2 model intercomparison project (OCO-2 MIP) (mean: 0.76 Pg C yr−1, standard deviation: 0.29 Pg C yr−1, 9 models in total) and CT2017 (1.19 Pg C yr−1). The uncertainty of the inverted CO2 flux was reduced by 14.71% compared to the prior flux. The annual mean XCO2 estimated by the inversion system was 403.67 ppm, which was 0.11 ppm smaller than the result (403.78 ppm) simulated by a parallel experiment without assimilating the OCO-2 retrievals and closer to the result of CT2017 (403.29 ppm). Independent CO2 flux and concentration measurements from towers, aircraft, and Total Carbon Column Observing Network (TCCON) were used to evaluate the results. Mean bias error (MBE) between the inverted CO2 flux and flux measurements was 0.73 g C m−2 d−1, was reduced by 22.34% and 28.43% compared to those of the prior flux and CT2017, respectively. MBEs between the CO2 concentrations estimated by the inversion system and concentration measurements from TCCON, towers, and aircraft were reduced by 52.78%, 96.45%, and 75%, respectively, compared to those of the parallel experiment. The experiment proved that CO2 emission hotspots indicated by the inverted annual CO2 flux with a relatively high spatial resolution of 50 km consisted well with the locations of most major metropolitan/urban areas in the contiguous United States, which demonstrated the potential of combing satellite observations with high spatial resolution CO2 flux inversion system in supporting the global stocktake.
