The imaging of high-speed high-squint synthetic aperture radar (HSHS-SAR), which is mounted on maneuvering platforms with curved trajectory, is a challenging task due to the existence of 3-D acceleration and the azimuth spatial variability of range migration and Doppler parameters. Although existing imaging algorithms based on linear range walk correction (LRWC) and nonlinear chirp scaling (NCS) can reduce the range–azimuth coupling of the frequency spectrum (FS) and the spatial variability of the Doppler parameter to some extent, they become invalid as the squint angle, speed, and resolution increase. Additionally, most of them ignore the effect of acceleration phase calibration (APC) on NCS, which should not be neglected as resolution increases. For these issues, a modified frequency nonlinear chirp scaling (MFNCS) algorithm is proposed in this paper. The proposed MFNCS algorithm mainly includes the following aspects. First, a more accurate approximation of range model (MAARM) is established to improve the accuracy of the instantaneous slant range history. Second, a preprocessing of the proposed algorithm based on the first range compression, LRWC, and a spatial-invariant APC (SIVAPC) is implemented to eliminate most of the effects of high-squint angle and 3-D acceleration on the FS. Third, a spatial-variant APC (SVAPC) is performed to remove azimuth spatial variability introduced by 3-D acceleration, and the range focusing is accomplished by the bulk range cell migration correction (BRCMC) and extended secondary range compression (ESRC). Fourth, the azimuth-dependent characteristics evaluation based on LRWC, SIVAPC, and SVAPC is completed to derive the MFNCS algorithm with fifth-order chirp scaling function for azimuth compression. Consequently, the final image is focused on the range time and azimuth frequency domain. The experimental simulation results verify the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. With a curved trajectory, HSHS-SAR imaging is carried out at a 50° geometric squint angle and 500 m × 500 m imaging width. The integrated sidelobe ratio and peak sidelobe ratio of the point targets at the scenario edges approach the theoretical values, and the range-azimuth resolution is 1.5 m × 3.0 m. High-resolution wide-swath (HRWS) imaging is the research focus of the modern spaceborne synthetic-aperture radar (SAR) imaging field, with significant relevance and vast application potential. Staggered SAR, as an innovative imaging system, mitigates blind areas across the entire swath by periodically altering the radar pulse repetition interval (PRI), thereby extending the swath width to multiples of that achievable by conventional systems. However, the staggered mode introduces inherent challenges, such as nonuniform azimuth sampling and echo data loss, leading to azimuth ambiguities and substantially impacting image quality. This paper proposes a sparse SAR imaging method for the low-oversampled staggered mode via compound regularization. The proposed method not only effectively suppresses azimuth ambiguities arising from nonuniform sampling without necessitating the restoration of missing echo data, but also incorporates total variation (TV) regularization into the sparse reconstruction model. This enhances the accurate reconstruction of distributed targets within the scene. High-resolution and high-squint spaceborne spotlight synthetic aperture radar (SAR) has significant potential for extensive application in remote sensing, but its swath width effectiveness is constrained by a critical factor: severe range cell migration (RCM). To address this, pulse repetition interval (PRI) variation offers a practical scheme for raw data reception. However, the current designs for continuously varying PRI (CV-PRI) exhibit high complexity in engineering. In response to the issue, this paper proposes a novel strategy of stepwise varying PRI (SV-PRI), which demonstrates higher reconstruction accuracy compared with CV-PRI. Furthermore, confronting the azimuth non-uniform sampling characteristics induced by the PRI variation, this paper introduces a complete uniform reconstruction processing based on the azimuth partitioning methodology, which effectively alleviates the inherent contradiction between resolution and swath width. The processing flow, utilizing the temporal point remapping (TPR) concept, ensures the uniformity and coherence of dataset partitioning and reassembly in the context of the interpolation on non-uniform grids. Finally, according to the simulation results, the point target data, processed through the processing flow proposed in this study, have demonstrated effective focusing results. Airborne circular synthetic aperture radar (CSAR) can realize high-resolution imaging of the scene over 360 degrees azimuth angle variation. Aiming at the problem of focusing of buildings for the airborne CSAR, this paper first analyzes the phase errors of CSAR buildings focusing in detail, and the analytic relationship between the scatterer height and azimuth focusing quality is deduced. Then, a focusing method of CSAR buildings based on the back projection algorithm is proposed. This method adopts the processing strategy of multi-layers imaging, and it is able to improve azimuth focusing quality of the buildings which have large height dimension. The proposed method is especially suitable for the high-resolution imaging and monitoring of the urban site with high-rise buildings in the airborne CSAR scenario. The correctness of the theoretical analysis and the validity of the proposed method are verified by using both simulation results and Ku-band airborne CSAR real data processing results. The F-SCAN principle is a better alternative to the scan-on-receive technique (SCORE) based on digital beamforming (DBF), which can avoid low gain caused by a conventional broad beam in the case of a wide swath. In F-SCAN SAR, a pencil beam scans the entire target area from far to near, providing high energy independent of the position and ensuring a low range ambiguity-to-signal ratio (RASR). Moreover, echo compression can be achieved via appropriate system parameter configuration, significantly shortening the receive window and reducing the amount of data. A wider range swath can, therefore, be achieved. However, for this novel F-SCAN SAR working mode, signal modeling and imaging processing are key issues that needed to be addressed. In this paper, the far-field synthetic antenna pattern of the space–time coding array (STCA) is first derived and analyzed, based on which the signal modeling of the F-SCAN SAR is carried out. Then, according to the signal model and echo characteristics, a novel imaging processing method based on the hybrid correlation algorithm is presented for the F-SCAN SAR. First, the dechirp operation is performed to compensate for the quadratic phase of the range time. The range compressed result is obtained after a range Fourier transform, where different range targets are successfully separated and range aliasing is avoided. Then, the modified azimuth reference function is correlated with the echo at each range cell to complete range cell migration correction (RCMC) and azimuth compensation. The received signal parameters and the Doppler parameters of each range cell are derived to update the azimuth reference function. Finally, accurate focused results are obtained in the range-frequency, azimuth-time domain. The simulation results indicate that the signal model based on the STCA can satisfy the requirements of the F-SCAN principle, and the proposed imaging algorithm can complete the precise focusing processing of the F-SCAN SAR echo. Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is capable of monitoring the ocean all day, regardless of weather conditions. However, moving ships exhibit azimuth defocus in SAR images, which severely hampers ship recognition performance. Ships typically move in a linear motion at sea. For refocusing linear moving ships, existing SAR autofocus algorithms cannot accurately extract defocus information and require multiple iterations. To overcome the poor focusing quality and high computational complexity of existing refocusing algorithms, this paper proposes a fast and accurate refocusing scheme for moving ships in SAR imagery based on Fractional Fourier Transform (FrFT). Firstly, the azimuth line with the strongest energy in the SAR image is selected as the best azimuth line representing its motion property. Then, according to the entropy variation law of the azimuth line after FrFT, the azimuth line's optimal rotation order is determined by the proposed minimum entropy search method, which can accurately and quickly obtain defocus information. In the final refocusing module, the scheme provides two ways, i.e., fast or fine refocusing approaches, to generate well-focused images. The fast refocusing approach performs FrFT on each azimuth line at the optimal rotation order of the best azimuth line. The fine refocusing approach takes the optimal rotation order of the best azimuth line as the initial value and further searches for the optimal rotation order of other azimuth lines. In order to verify the effectiveness of the proposed scheme, experiments are carried out on a number of Gaofen-3 SAR images in different acquisition modes. The experimental results show that the proposed fast refocusing approach can achieve the fastest speed, which is 2.1% of the traditional FrFT-based method's processing time. The LuTan-1(LT-1), known as the L-band differential interferometric synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellite system, is an essential piece of civil infrastructure in China, providing extensive applications such as surface deformation monitoring and topographic mapping. To achieve high-resolution and wide-swath (HRWS) observation abilities, the LT-1 takes the dual receiving antenna (DRA) imaging mode as its working mode. However, amplitude and phase errors between channels lead to a mismatch between the reconstruction filter and the multichannel echo signal, worsen the reconstructed azimuth spectrum, and introduce ambiguity targets in the final imaging results, seriously affecting the final imaging quality. In order to better evaluate the channel error and azimuth ambiguity performance of the LT-1 system, this paper proposed an advanced channel consistency correction method and conducted many measured data experiments. Doppler Centroid Analysis (DCA) technique is one of the major techniques that do permit a direct retrieval of ocean surface velocity from synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data. However, azimuth ambiguities in the SAR images severely restrict the capability of DCA technique to obtain accurate ocean surface Doppler velocities. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate how the azimuth ambiguities impact the Doppler velocity estimation performance and to evaluate how significant the impact is. In this paper, a model for ocean surface Doppler velocity estimation affected by azimuth ambiguities is developed resorting to jointly circular Gaussian processes, and its statistic is derived. The impact of azimuth ambiguities on Doppler velocity estimation performance in terms of Doppler centroid estimation bias and the standard deviation of Doppler centroid estimates is analyzed. The theoretical results are validated through simulation and Doppler velocities retrieved from Chinese Gaofen-3 (GF-3) SAR Doppler centroid estimates affected by azimuth ambiguities. This study will help researchers better understand the impact of azimuth ambiguities on Doppler velocity estimation, and will provide a theoretical reference for subsequent research on how to reduce the impact of azimuth ambiguities more effectively. A multi-channel synthetic aperture radar (SAR) on board a spaceplane orbiting near the top of the atmosphere is proposed to acquire images of cruising ships. Low pulse repetition frequency (PRF) is required for high-resolution wide-swath (HRWS) imaging, leading to inevitable problems of azimuth spectrum aliasing (ASA) and azimuth Doppler ambiguity (ADA). In this work, we propose a phase matching technique to solve the ASA problem in restoring the azimuth spectrum. A multi-stage compressive-sensing (CS) technique is also proposed to solve both ADA and ASA problems. Five similar types of cruising ship are simulated to verify the efficacy of the proposed approach, at different levels of signal-to-noise ratio. Ground moving targets (GMT), due to the existence of velocity in range and azimuth direction, will lead to the deviation from their true position and defocus in the azimuth direction during the synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging process. To address this problem and compress the amount of echo data, a sparse SAR imaging method for ground moving targets is proposed. Specifically, we first constructed a two-dimensional sparse observation model of the GMT based on matched filter operators. Then, the observation model was solved by a deep network, GMT sparse imaging network (GMTSI-Net), which was mainly obtained by unfolding an iterative soft threshold algorithm (ISTA)-based iterative solution. Furthermore, we designed an adaptive unfolding module in the imaging network to improve the adaptability of the network to the input of echo data with different sampling ratios. The proposed imaging network can achieve faster and more accurate SAR images of ground moving targets under a low sampling ratio and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). The azimuth multichannel synthetic aperture radar (MC-SAR) is an effective means of earth observation due to its high-resolution and wide-swath (HRWS) imaging capability. Compared with the traditional MC-SAR, the two-dimensional (2D) spectrum of the squint multichannel synthetic aperture radar (SMC-SAR) is skewed, leading to the severe coupling between azimuth signals and range signals. Therefore, the traditional imaging algorithms are inapplicable to SMC-SAR. Currently, the existing imaging algorithms for SMC-SAR need interpolation or sub-aperture processing, which results in low efficiency. This paper proposes a novel imaging scheme for spaceborne SMC-SAR to handle this issue. With the squint angle known, the Doppler centroid can be compensated for by the spectrum shift function. Additionally, the frequency correlation method (FCM) is utilized to estimate the channel phase imbalance. After that, the azimuth multichannel data are reconstructed by the filter banks to eliminate the Doppler spectrum aliasing. Finally, the data are imaged based on the modified equivalent slant range model (MESRM). The synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images of a moving target may be out of focus, given the motions of a non-cooperative target. Doppler ambiguities, including the Doppler center blur and spectrum ambiguity, will easily appear due to the limitations of pulse repetition frequency, which causes difficulty in moving-target imaging. Therefore, a robust fast Doppler ambiguity approach for SAR imaging of a ground-based moving target using range azimuth joint processing (RAJP) is presented. Firstly, the use of RAJP, based on a two-dimensional cross-correlation function and linear range cell migration (LRCM) compensation function, is proposed to simultaneously obtain the first- and second-order phase parameters in the fast-time and azimuth-frequency domains. Then, a corresponding azimuth reference function is constructed to image the moving target. Additionally, a principal component analysis-based operation is introduced to solve the mismatch with the LRCM compensation function. The couplings between the range and azimuth and between the first- and second-order parameters can be simultaneously decoupled by the proposed RAJP operation, which simplifies the processing steps. The developed approach can simultaneously obtain the first- and second-order parameters in the fast-time and azimuth-frequency domains, which avoids the propagation error of parameter estimation caused by the stepwise processing operation. The proposed method is relatively fast, given the need for fewer processing steps. The presented approach is robust in terms of Doppler ambiguity and handles the blind speed sidelobe well. In this paper, a parametric sparse representation (PSR) method is proposed for refocusing of moving targets in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images. In regular SAR images, moving targets are defocused due to unknown motion parameters. Refocusing of moving targets requires accurate phase compensation of echo data. In the proposed method, the region of interest (ROI) data containing the moving targets are extracted from the complex SAR image and represented in a sparse fashion through a parametric transform, which is related to the phase compensation parameter. By updating the reflectivities of moving target scatterers and the parametric transform in an iterative fashion, the phase compensation parameter can be accurately estimated and the SAR images of moving targets can be refocused well. The proposed method directly operates on small-size defocused ROI data, which helps to reduce the computational burden and suppress the clutter. Compared to other existing ROI-based methods, the proposed method can suppress asymmetric side-lobes and improve the image quality. We present in this work a first assessment of the imaging and topographic mapping capabilities of the InSAeS4 system, which is a single-pass interferometric airborne X-Band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR). In particular, we first provide a brief description of the InSAeS4 sensor. Then, we discuss the results of our analysis on the SAR and interferometric SAR products relevant to the first flight-test campaign. More specifically, we have exploited as reference the GPS measurements relevant to nine Corner Reflectors (CRs) deployed over the illuminated area during the campaign and a laser scanner Digital Elevation Model (DEM). From the analysis carried out on the CRs we achieved a mean geometric resolution, for the SAR products, of about 0.14 m in azimuth and 0.49 m in range, a positioning misalignment with standard deviation of 0.07 m in range and 0.08 m in azimuth, and a height error with standard deviation of 0.51 m. This paper presents a new spaceborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) burst mode named "Extended Terrain Observation by Progressive Scans (ETOPS)" for wide swath imaged coverage. This scheme extends the imaging performance of the conventional Terrain Observation by Progressive Scans (TOPS) mode with a very limited azimuth beam steering capability. Compared with the TOPS mode with the same azimuth beam steering range for the same swath width, a finer azimuth resolution could be obtained. With the same system parameters, examples of four burst SAR imaging modes named ScanSAR, TOPS, inverse TOPS (ITOPS) and ETOPS are given, and their corresponding system performances are analyzed and compared. High-Resolution Wide-Swath (HRWS) is an important development direction of space-borne Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR). The two-dimensional spatial variation of the Doppler parameters is the most significant characteristic of the sliding spotlight space-borne SAR system under the requirements of HRWS. Therefore, the compensation of the two-dimensional spatial variation is the most challenging problem faced in the imaging of HRWS situations. The compensatory approach is then proposed to address this problem in this paper. The spatial distribution of the Doppler parameters for the HRWS space-borne SAR data in the sliding spotlight working mode is firstly analyzed, based on which a Spatial-Variant Equivalent Slant Range Model (SV-ESRM) is put forward to accurately formulate the range history for the distributed target. By introducing an azimuth-varying term, the SV-ESRM can precisely describe the range history for not only central targets but also marginal targets, which is more adaptive to the HRWS space-borne SAR requirements. Based on the SV-ESRM, a Modified Hybrid Correlation Algorithm (MHCA) for HRWS space-borne SAR imaging is derived to focus the full-scene data on one single imaging processing. A Doppler phase perturbation incorporated with the sub-aperture method is firstly performed to eliminate the azimuth variation of the Doppler parameters and remove the Doppler spectrum aliasing. Then, an advanced hybrid correlation is employed to achieve the precise differential Range Cell Migration (RCM) correction and Doppler phase compensation. A range phase perturbation method is also utilized to eliminate the range profile defocusing caused by range-azimuth coupling for marginal targets. Finally, a de-rotation processing is performed to remove the azimuth aliasing and the residual azimuth-variance and obtain the precisely focused SAR image. Simulation shows that the SAR echoes for a 20 km × 20 km scene with a 0.25 m resolution in both the range and azimuth directions could be focused precisely via one single imaging processing, which validates the feasibility of the proposed algorithm. Azimuth non-uniform signal-reconstruction is a critical step for azimuth multi-channel high-resolution wide-swath (HRWS) synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data processing. However, the received non-uniform signal has noise in the actual azimuth multi-channel SAR (MCSAR) operation, which leads to the serious reduction in the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the results processed by a traditional reconstruction algorithm. Aiming to address the problem of reducing the SNR of the traditional reconstruction algorithm in the reconstruction of non-uniform signal with noise, a novel signal-reconstruction algorithm based on two-step projection technology (TSPT) for the MCSAR system is proposed in this paper. The key part of the TSPT algorithm consists of a two-step projection. The first projection is to project the given signal into the selected intermediate subspace, spanned by the integer conversion of the compact support kernel function. This process generates a set of sparse equations, which can be solved efficiently by using the sparse equation solver. The second key projection is to project the first projection result into the subspace of the known sampled signal. The secondary projection can be achieved with a digital linear translation invariant (LSI) filter and generate a uniformly spaced signal. As a result, compared with the traditional azimuth MCSAR signal-reconstruction algorithm, the proposed algorithm can improve SNR and reduce the azimuth ambiguity-signal-ratio (AASR). To acquire high-resolution wide-swath (HRWS) imaging capacity, the displaced phase center multichannel azimuth beam (DPCMAB) technology is usually adopted in spaceborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR), while multichannel reconstruction must be carried out before imaging process due to azimuth nonuniform sampling. Up to now, almost all azimuth multichannel reconstruction algorithms have been mainly based on conventional hyperbolic range equation (CHRE), but the accuracy of the CHRE model is usually not suitable for the HRWS mode, especially for high resolution and large squint observation cases. In this study, the azimuth multichannel signal model based on the advanced hyperbolic range equation (AHRE) is established and analyzed. The major difference between multichannel signal models based on CHRE and AHRE is the additional time-varying phase error between azimuth channels. The time-varying phase error is small and can be ignored in the monostatic DPCMAB SAR system, but it must be considered and compensated in the distributed DPCMAB SAR system. In addition to the time-varying phase error, additional Doppler spectrum shift and extended Doppler bandwidth should be considered in the squint case during azimuth multichannel reconstruction. The azimuth multichannel reconstruction algorithm based on AHRE is proposed in this paper. Before multichannel reconstruction and combination, time-varying phase errors between azimuth channels were first compensated, and the range-frequency-dependent de-skewing function was derived to remove the two-dimension (2D) spectrum tilt to avoid azimuth under-sampling. Then, azimuth multichannel data were reconstructed according to the azimuth multichannel impulse response based on AHRE. Finally, the range-frequency dependent re-skewing function was introduced to recover the tilted 2D spectrum. High-altitude platforms (HAP) or near-space vehicle offers several advantages over current low earth orbit (LEO) satellite and airplane, because HAP is not constrained by orbital mechanics and fuel consumption. These advantages provide potential for some specific remote sensing applications that require persistent monitoring or fast-revisiting frequency. This paper investigates the azimuth-variant signal processing in HAP-borne bistatic synthetic aperture radar (BiSAR) with spaceborne or airborne transmitter for high-resolution remote sensing. The system configuration, azimuth-variant Doppler characteristics and two-dimensional echo spectrum are analyzed. Conceptual system simulation results are also provided. Since the azimuth-variant BiSAR geometry brings a challenge for developing high precision data processing algorithms, we propose an image formation algorithm using equivalent velocity and nonlinear chirp scaling (NCS) to address the azimuth-variant signal processing problem. Hybrid and ± π / 4 quadrature-polarimetric (quad-pol) synthetic aperture radar (SAR) systems operating from space can obtain all polarimetric components simultaneously but suffer from severe azimuth ambiguities in the cross-polarized (cross-pol) measurement channels. In this paper, the hybrid and ± π / 4 quad-pol SAR systems with multiple receive channels in azimuth are widely investigated to suppress the azimuth ambiguities of the cross-pol components. We first provide a more thorough analysis of the multichannel hybrid and ± π / 4 quad-pol SAR systems. Then, the multichannel signal processing is briefly discussed for the reconstruction of the quad-pol SAR signal from the aliased signals, in which the conventional reconstruction algorithm causes extremely severe azimuth ambiguities. To this end, an improved reconstruction method is proposed based on a joint optimization, which allows for the minimization of ambiguities from the desired polarization and the simultaneous power of undesired polarized signal. This method can largely suppress azimuth ambiguities compared with the conventional reconstruction algorithm. Finally, to verify the advantages and effectiveness of the proposed approach, the azimuth ambiguity-to-signal ratio (AASR), the range ambiguity-to-signal ratio (RASR) and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of all polarizations, as well as a set of imaging simulation results, are given to describe the effects of reconstruction on the multichannel hybrid and ± π / 4 quad-pol SAR systems. In a multichannel geosynchronous spaceborne–airborne bistatic synthetic aperture radar (GEO-SA-BiSAR) system, the airborne receiver can obtain high-resolution microwave images with good signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) by passively receiving echoes from the desired area. Since the Doppler modulation and range history of a moving target are obviously different from a stationary target, a signal geometry model for moving targets in multichannel GEO-SA-BiSAR is established in this paper. According to simulation results, the along track velocity introduces target defocusing in azimuth, and the slant range velocity mainly causes multiple false targets. To resolve these problems, a modified multichannel reconstruction method in azimuth channel GEO-SA-BiSAR is proposed according to the azimuth multichannel impulse response of the imaged moving target. Before azimuth multichannel raw data combination, both spatial-variant range cell migration correction (RCMC) and azimuth nonlinear chirp scaling (ANLCS) should be performed to reduce the influence of the range offset and lower the Doppler bandwidth of the whole raw data, respectively. Afterward, a novel azimuth multichannel reconstruction algorithm is carried out via the modified reconstruction matrix based on the estimated target velocity. The target slant range velocity estimation is implemented by introducing the signal intensity ratio (SIR). Compared with the conventional method for the stationary target to handle the raw data of the moving target, the false targets could be obviously suppressed by using the proposed approach. Hybrid quadrature polarimetric (hybrid quad-pol) synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is proposed as a potential candidate for the full-polarimetric SAR mode. It allows balanced range ambiguity performance and simplified system structure. System based on hybrid-pol SAR mode can also implement the conventional quad-pol mode and the compact-pol mode via few adjustments. However, the azimuth ambiguity performance in cross-pol channels is proved deteriorated in hybrid quad-pol mode due to the lopsided energy distribution of ambiguities. As are generally called "ghost" targets, azimuth ambiguities usually influence the recognition of the targets in SAR imaging. This letter describes how to remove the false targets that arise from azimuth ambiguities by means of waveform diversity and dual-focus post-processing (DFPP) technique. The proposed method exploits the feature of azimuth ambiguity and yields improved image quality in cross-pol channels with strong co-pol azimuth ambiguities removed in hybrid quad-pol SAR at a low system cost. The phenomenon of periodical gapping in Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), which is induced in various ways, creates challenges in focusing raw SAR data. To handle this problem, a novel method is proposed in this paper. Complex deconvolution is utilized to restore the azimuth spectrum of complete data from the gapped raw data in the proposed method. In other words, a new approach is provided by the proposed method to cope with periodically gapped raw SAR data via complex deconvolution. The proposed method provides a robust implementation of deconvolution for processing azimuth gapped raw data. The proposed method mainly consists of phase compensation and recovering the azimuth spectrum of raw data with complex deconvolution. The gapped data become sparser in the range of the Doppler domain after phase compensation. Then, it is feasible to recover the azimuth spectrum of the complete data from gapped raw data via complex deconvolution in the Doppler domain. Afterwards, the traditional SAR imaging algorithm is capable of focusing the reconstructed raw data in this paper. The effectiveness of the proposed method was validated via point target simulation and surface target simulation. The synthetic aperture radar (SAR) image of moving targets will defocus due to the unknown motion parameters. For fast-maneuvering targets, the range cell migration (RCM), Doppler frequency migration and Doppler ambiguity are complex problems. As a result, focusing of fast-maneuvering targets is difficult. In this work, an efficient SAR refocusing algorithm is proposed for fast-maneuvering targets. The proposed algorithm mainly contains three steps. Firstly, the RCM is corrected using sequence reversing, matrix complex multiplication and an improved second-order RCM correction function. Secondly, a 1D scaled Fourier transform is introduced to estimate the remaining chirp rate. Thirdly, a matched filter based on the estimated chirp rate is proposed to focus the maneuvering target in the range–azimuth time domain. The proposed method is computationally efficient because it can be implemented by the fast Fourier transform (FFT), inverse FFT and non-uniform FFT. A new deramp function is proposed to further address the serious problem of Doppler ambiguity. A spurious peak recognition procedure is proposed on the basis of the cross-term analysis. Autofocus has attracted wide attention for unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) synthetic aperture radar (SAR) systems, because autofocus process is crucial and difficult when the phase error is spatially dependent on both range and azimuth directions. In this paper, a novel two-dimensional spatial-variant map-drift algorithm (2D-SVMDA) is developed to provide robust autofocusing performance for UAV SAR imagery. This proposed algorithm combines two enhanced map-drift kernels. On the one hand, based on the azimuth-dependent phase correction, a novel Algorithm-variant map-drift algorithm (AVMDA) is established to model the residual phase error as a linear function in the azimuth direction. Then the model coefficients are efficiently estimated by a quadratic Newton optimization with modified maximum cross-correlation. On the other hand, by concatenating the existing range-dependent map-drift algorithm (RDMDA) and the proposed AVMDA in this paper, a phase autofocus procedure of 2D-SVMDA is finally established. The proposed 2D-SVMDA can handle spatial-variance problems induced by strong phase errors. This paper presents a method and results for the estimation of residual Doppler frequency, and consequently the range velocity component of point targets in single-channel synthetic aperture radar (SAR) focused single-look complex (SLC) data. It is still a challenging task to precisely retrieve the radial velocity of small and slow-moving objects, which requires an approach providing precise estimates from only a limited number of samples within a few range bins. The proposed method utilizes linear least squares, along with the estimation of signal parameters via rotational invariance techniques (ESPRIT) algorithm, to provide optimum estimates from sets of azimuth subsamples that have different azimuth temporal distances. The ratio of estimated Doppler frequency to root-mean square error (RMSE) is suggested for determining a critical threshold, optimally selecting a number of azimuth subsample sets to be involved in the estimation. The proposed method was applied to TerraSAR-X and KOMPSAT-5 X-band SAR SLC data for on-land and coastal sea estimation, with speed-controlled, truck-mounted corner reflectors and ships, respectively. The results demonstrate its performance of the method, with percent errors of less than 5%, in retrieved range velocity for both on-land and in the sea. It is also robust, even for weak targets with low peak-to-sidelobe ratios (PSLRs) and signal-to-clutter ratios (RCSs). Since the characteristics of targets and clutter on land and in the sea are different, it is recommended that the method is applied separately with different thresholds. The estimation of deformation parameters using persistent scatterer interferometry (PSI) is limited to single dominant coherent scatterers. As such, it rejects layovers wherein multiple scatterers are interfering in the same range-azimuth resolution cell. Differential synthetic aperture radar (SAR) tomography can improve deformation sampling as it has the ability to resolve layovers by separating the interfering scatterers. In this way, both PSI and tomography inevitably require a means to detect coherent scatterers, i.e., to perform hypothesis testing to decide whether a given candidate scatterer is coherent. This paper reports the application of a detection strategy in the context of "tomography as an add-on to PSI". As the performance of a detector is typically linked to the statistical description of the underlying mathematical model, we investigate how the statistics of the phase instabilities in the PSI analysis are carried forward to the subsequent tomographic analysis. While phase instabilities in PSI are generally modeled as an additive noise term in the interferometric phase model, their impact in SAR tomography manifests as a multiplicative disturbance. The detection strategy proposed in this paper allows extending the same quality considerations as used in the prior PSI processing (in terms of the dispersion of the residual phase) to the subsequent tomographic analysis. In particular, the hypothesis testing for the detection of coherent scatterers is implemented such that the expected probability of false alarm is consistent between PSI and tomography. The investigation is supported with empirical analyses on an interferometric data stack comprising 50 TerraSAR-X acquisitions in stripmap mode, over the city of Barcelona, Spain, from 2007–2012.
