This paper proposes a method for forecasting surface solar irradiance (SSI), the most critical factor in solar photovoltaic (PV) power generation. The proposed method uses 16-channel data obtained by the GEO-KOMPSAT-2A (GK2A) satellite of South Korea as the main data for SSI forecasting. To determine feature variables related to SSI from the 16-channel data, the differences and ratios between the channels were utilized. Additionally, to consider the fundamental characteristics of SSI originating from the sun, solar geometry parameters, such as solar declination (SD), solar elevation angle (SEA), and extraterrestrial solar radiation (ESR), were used. Deep learning-based feature selection (Deep-FS) was employed to select appropriate feature variables that affect SSI from various feature variables extracted from the 16-channel data. Lastly, spatio-temporal deep learning models, such as convolutional neural network–long short-term memory (CNN-LSTM) and CNN–gated recurrent unit (CNN-GRU), which can simultaneously reflect temporal and spatial characteristics, were used to forecast SSI. Satellite-based flood monitoring for providing visual information on the targeted areas is crucial in responding to and recovering from river floods. However, such monitoring for practical purposes has been constrained mainly by obtaining and analyzing satellite data, and linking and optimizing the required processes. For these purposes, we present a deep learning-based flood area extraction model for a fully automated flood monitoring system, which is designed to continuously operate on a cloud-based computing platform for regularly extracting flooded area from Sentinel-1 data, and providing visual information on flood situations with better image segmentation accuracy. To develop the new flood area extraction model using deep learning, initial model tests were performed more than 500 times to determine optimal hyperparameters, water ratio, and best band combination. The results of this research showed that at 'waterbody ratio 30%', which yielded higher segmentation accuracies and lower loss, precision, overall accuracy, IOU, recall, and F1 score of 'VV, aspect, topographic wetness index, and buffer input bands' were 0.976, 0.956, 0.894, 0.964, and 0.970, respectively, and averaged inference time was 744.3941 s, which demonstrate improved image segmentation accuracy and reduced processing time. The operation and robustness of the fully automated flood monitoring system were demonstrated by automatically segmenting 12 Sentinel-1 images for the two major flood events in Republic of Korea during 2020 and 2022 in accordance with the hyperparameters, waterbody ratio, and band combinations determined through the intensive tests. Visual inspection of the outputs showed that misclassification of constructed facilities and mountain shadows were extremely reduced. It is anticipated that the fully automated flood monitoring system and the deep leaning-based waterbody extraction model presented in this research could be a valuable reference and benchmark for other countries trying to build a cloud-based flood monitoring system for rapid flood monitoring using deep learning. Remote sensing image retrieval (RSIR) is the process of searching for identical areas by investigating the similarities between a query image and the database images. RSIR is a challenging task owing to the time difference, viewpoint, and coverage area depending on the shooting circumstance, resulting in variations in the image contents. In this paper, we propose a novel method based on a coarse-to-fine strategy, which makes a deep network more robust to the variations in remote sensing images. Moreover, we propose a new triangular loss function to consider the whole relation within the tuple. This loss function improves the retrieval performance and demonstrates better performance in terms of learning the detailed information in complex remote sensing images. To verify our methods, we experimented with the Google Earth South Korea dataset, which contains 40,000 images, using the evaluation metric Recall@n. In all experiments, we obtained better performance results than those of the existing retrieval training methods. Our source code and Google Earth South Korea dataset are available online. Estimating the damaged area after a forest fire is important for responding to this natural catastrophe. With the support of aerial remote sensing, typically with unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), the aerial imagery of forest-fire areas can be easily obtained; however, retrieving the burnt area from the image is still a challenge. We implemented a new approach for segmenting burnt areas from UAV images using deep learning algorithms. First, the data were collected from a forest fire in Andong, the Republic of Korea, in April 2020. Then, the proposed two-patch-level deep-learning models were implemented. A patch-level 1 network was trained using the UNet++ architecture. The output prediction of this network was used as a position input for the second network, which used UNet. It took the reference position from the first network as its input and refined the results. Finally, the final performance of our proposed method was compared with a state-of-the-art image-segmentation algorithm to prove its robustness. Comparative research on the loss functions was also performed. Our proposed approach demonstrated its effectiveness in extracting burnt areas from UAV images and can contribute to estimating maps showing the areas damaged by forest fires. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The non-spatial information of cadastral maps must be repeatedly updated to monitor recent changes in land property and to detect illegal land registrations by tax evaders. Since non-spatial information, such as land category, is usually updated by field-based surveys, it is time-consuming and only a limited area can be updated at a time. Although land categories can be updated by remote sensing techniques, the update is typically performed through manual analysis, namely through a visually interpreted comparison between the newly generated land information and the existing cadastral maps. A cost-effective, fast alternative to the current surveying methods would improve the efficiency of land management. For this purpose, the present study analyzes the discrepancy between the existing cadastral map and the actual land use. Our proposed method operates in two steps. First, an up-to-date land cover map is generated from hyperspectral unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) images. These images are effectively classified by a hybrid two- and three-dimensional convolutional neural network. Second, a discrepancy map, which contains the ratio of the area that is being used differently from the registered land use in each parcel, is constructed through a three-stage inconsistency comparison. As a case study, the proposed method was evaluated using hyperspectral UAV images acquired at two sites of Jeonju in South Korea. The overall classification accuracies of six land classes at Sites 1 and 2 were 99.93% and 99.75% and those at Sites 1 and 2 are 39.4% and 34.4%, respectively, which had discrepancy ratios of 50% or higher. Finally, discrepancy maps between the land cover maps and existing cadastral maps were generated and visualized. The method automatically reveals the inconsistent parcels requiring updates of their land category. Although the performance of the proposed method depends on the classification results obtained from UAV imagery, the method allows a flexible modification of the matching criteria between the land categories and land coverage. Therefore, it is generalizable to various cadastral systems and the discrepancy ratios will provide practical information and significantly reduce the time and effort for land monitoring and field surveying.
