Vegetation is an important type of land cover. Long-term, large-scale, and high-precision vegetation monitoring is of great significance for ecological environment investigation and regional sustainable development in protected areas. This paper develops a long-term remote sensing monitoring method for vegetation by calculating the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) based on the Google Earth Engine (GEE) cloud platform and Landsat satellite remote sensing images. First, based on Landsat long-term satellite images and GEE, the spatiotemporal distribution map of the NDVI is accurately drawn. Subsequently, the NDVI is accurately classified, and the time trend analysis of the NDVI is conducted based on the NDVI mean trend graphs, transition matrices, etc. Then, combined with Moran's I, high/low clusters, and other methods, the spatial pattern characteristics of the NDVI are analyzed. Finally, climate factors, terrain factors, and anthropologic factors are considered comprehensively. An analysis of the factors affecting the evolution of the NDVI is performed. Taking Zhoushan Island, China, as an example, an experiment is conducted, and the results reveal that (1) the average NDVI exhibits a decreasing trend from 1985 to 2022, decreasing from 0.53 in 1985 to 0.46 in 2022. (2) Regarding vegetation index transitions, the high NDVI areas (0.6–1) exhibit the most substantial shift toward moderately high NDVI values (0.4–0.6), covering an area of 83.10 km2. (3) There is an obvious spatial agglomeration phenomenon in the NDVI on Zhoushan Island. The high-high NDVI clusters and the significant hot spots are predominantly concentrated in the island's interior regions, while the low-low NDVI clusters and the significant cold spots are mainly situated along the coastal areas. (4) The DEM, slope, and temperature have a greater influence among the single factors on the spatial pattern distribution of the NDVI in 2015. There are significant differences in the spatial pattern distribution of the NDVI between the temperature and DEM, temperature and slope, DEM and precipitation, slope and precipitation, aspect and population, and aspect and gross domestic product (GDP). The DEM and slope, DEM and temperature, and DEM and population are three sets of factors with a strong influence on spatial pattern interaction. This study provides data support for the scientific management of vegetation resources on Zhoushan Island and is of great significance to the sustainable development of the island region. Models for bathymetry retrieval from multispectral images have not considered the errors caused by tidal fluctuation. A rigorous bathymetric model that considers the variation in tide height time series, including the tide height calculation and instantaneous tide height correction at the epoch of satellite flight into the bathymetric retrieval model, is proposed in this paper. The model was applied on Weizhou Island, located in Guangxi Province, China, and its accuracy verificated with four check lines and seven checkpoints. A scene from the Landsat 8 satellite image was used as experimental data. The reference ("true") water depth data collected by a RESON SeaBat 7125 multibeam instrument was used for comparison analysis. When satellite-derived bathymetry is compared, it is found that maximum absolute error, mean absolute error, and RMSE have decreased 54, 45, and 30% relative to that of the traditional model in the entire test field. The accuracy of the water depths retrieved by our model increased 30 and 56% when validated using four check lines and seven checkpoints, respectively. Therefore, it can be concluded that the model proposed in this paper can effectively improve the accuracy of bathymetry retrieved from Landsat 8 images. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Due to the country's rapid economic growth, the problem of air pollution in China is becoming increasingly serious. In order to achieve a win-win situation for the environment and urban development, the government has issued many policies to strengthen environmental protection. PM2.5 is the primary particulate matter in air pollution, so an accurate estimation of PM2.5 distribution is of great significance. Although previous studies have attempted to retrieve PM2.5 using geostatistical or aerosol remote sensing retrieval methods, the current rough resolution and accuracy remain as limitations of such methods. This paper proposes a fine-grained spatiotemporal PM2.5 retrieval method that comprehensively considers various datasets, such as Landsat 8 satellite images, ground monitoring station data, and socio-economic data, to explore the applicability of different machine learning algorithms in PM2.5 retrieval. Six typical algorithms were used to train the multi-dimensional elements in a series of experiments. The characteristics of retrieval accuracy in different scenarios were clarified mainly according to the validation index, R2. The random forest algorithm was shown to have the best numerical and PM2.5-based air-quality-category accuracy, with a cross-validated R2 of 0.86 and a category retrieval accuracy of 0.83, while both maintained excellent retrieval accuracy and achieved a high spatiotemporal resolution. Based on this retrieval model, we evaluated the PM2.5 distribution characteristics and hourly variation in the sample area, as well as the functions of different input variables in the model. The PM2.5 retrieval method proposed in this paper provides a new model for fine-grained PM2.5 concentration estimation to determine the distribution laws of air pollutants and thereby specify more effective measures to realize the high-quality development of the city. Snow cover is a sensitive indicator of global climate change, and optical images are an important means for monitoring its spatiotemporal changes. Due to the high reflectivity, rapid change, and intense spatial heterogeneity of mountainous snow cover, Sentinel-2 (S2) and Landsat 8 (L8) satellite imagery with both high spatial resolution and spectral resolution have become major data sources. However, optical sensors are more susceptible to cloud cover, and the two satellite images have significant spectral differences, making it challenging to obtain snow cover beneath clouds and cloud shadows (CCSs). Based on our previously published approach for snow reconstruction on S2 images using the Google Earth Engine (GEE), this study introduces two main innovations to reconstruct snow cover: (1) combining S2 and L8 images and choosing different CCS detection methods, and (2) improving the cloud shadow detection algorithm by considering land cover types, thus further improving the mountainous-snow-monitoring ability. The Babao River Basin of the Qilian Mountains in China is chosen as the study area; 399 scenes of S2 and 35 scenes of L8 are selected to analyze the spatiotemporal variations of snow cover from September 2019 to August 2022 in GEE. The results indicate that the snow reconstruction accuracies of both images are relatively high, and the overall accuracies for S2 and L8 are 80.74% and 88.81%, respectively. According to the time-series analysis of three hydrological years, it is found that there is a marked difference in the spatial distribution of snow cover in different hydrological years within the basin, with fluctuations observed overall. The massive increase in the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, especially carbon dioxide (CO2), has had a significant impact on the global climate. Research has revealed that lakes play an important role in the global carbon cycle and that they can shift between the roles of carbon sources and sinks. This study used Landsat satellite images to analyze the spatiotemporal characteristics and factors influencing the CO2 changes in Chagan Lake in China. We conducted six water sampling campaigns at Chagan Lake in 2020–2021 and determined the partial pressure of carbon dioxide (pCO2) from 110 water samples. Landsat surface reflectance was matched with water sampling events within ±7 days of satellite overpasses, yielding 75 matched pairs. A regression analysis indicated strong associations between pCO2 and both the band difference model of the near-infrared band and green band (Band 5-Band 3, R2 = 0.83, RMSE = 27.55 μatm) and the exponential model [((exp(b3) − exp(b5))2/(exp(b3) + exp(b5))2, R2 = 0.82, RMSE = 27.99 μatm]. A comparison between the performances of a linear regression model and a machine learning model found that the XGBoost model had the highest fitting accuracy (R2 = 0.94, RMSE = 16.86 μatm). We used Landsat/OLI images acquired mainly in 2021 to map pCO2 in Chagan Lake during the ice-free period. The pCO2 in the surface water of Chagan Lake showed considerable spatiotemporal variability within a range of 0–200 μatm. pCO2 also showed significant seasonal variations, with the lowest and highest mean values in autumn (30–50 μatm) and summer (120–150 μatm), respectively. Spatially, the pCO2 values in the southeast of Chagan Lake were higher than those in the northwest. The CO2 fluxes were calculated based on the pCO2 and ranged from −3.69 to −2.42 mmol/m2/d, indicating that Chagan Lake was absorbing CO2 (i.e., it was a weak carbon sink). Temperature, chlorophyll a, total suspended matter, and turbidity were found to have reinforcing effects on the overall trend of pCO2, while the Secchi disk depth was negatively correlated with pCO2. The first successful sand-control was achieved in the Mu Us Desert by local people in the 1950–1960s, and their experience and approach have been extended to the whole Ordos and Northern China since then. The objective of this paper is to assess comprehensively the effectiveness of sand-control in 15 counties in and around Mu Us using multitemporal satellite images and socioeconomic data. After atmospheric correction, Landsat TM and OLI images were harnessed for land cover classification based on the ground-truth data and for derivation of the GDVI (generalized difference vegetation index) to extract the biophysical changes of the managed desert and desertification. Climatic, socioeconomic, environmental and spatial factors were selected for coupling analysis by multiple linear and logistic regression models to reveal the driving forces of desertification and their spatial determinants. The results show that from 1991 to 2020, 8712 km2 or 63% of the desert has been converted into pastures and shrublands with a greenness increase of 0.3509 in GDVI; the effectiveness of sand-control is favored by the rational agropastoral activities and policies; though desertification occurs locally, it is associated with both climatic and socioeconomic factors, such as wind speed, precipitation, water availability, distance to roads and animal husbandry. Agricultural greenhouses (AGs) are an important component of modern facility agriculture, and accurately mapping and dynamically monitoring their distribution are necessary for agricultural scientific management and planning. Semantic segmentation can be adopted for AG extraction from remote sensing images. However, the feature maps obtained by traditional deep convolutional neural network (DCNN)-based segmentation algorithms blur spatial details and insufficient attention is usually paid to contextual representation. Meanwhile, the maintenance of the original morphological characteristics, especially the boundaries, is still a challenge for precise identification of AGs. To alleviate these problems, this paper proposes a novel network called high-resolution boundary refined network (HBRNet). In this method, we design a new backbone with multiple paths based on HRNetV2 aiming to preserve high spatial resolution and improve feature extraction capability, in which the Pyramid Cross Channel Attention (PCCA) module is embedded to residual blocks to strengthen the interaction of multiscale information. Moreover, the Spatial Enhancement (SE) module is employed to integrate the contextual information of different scales. In addition, we introduce the Spatial Gradient Variation (SGV) unit in the Boundary Refined (BR) module to couple the segmentation task and boundary learning task, so that they can share latent high-level semantics and interact with each other, and combine this with the joint loss to refine the boundary. In our study, GaoFen-2 remote sensing images in Shouguang City, Shandong Province, China are selected to make the AG dataset. The experimental results show that HBRNet demonstrates a significant improvement in segmentation performance up to an IoU score of 94.89%, implying that this approach has advantages and potential for precise identification of AGs. Large-scale infrastructure, such as China–Europe Railway Express (CER-Express), which connects countries and regions across Asia and Europe, has a potentially profound effect on land use, as evidenced by changes in land cover along the railway. To ensure sustainable development of such infrastructure and appropriate land administration, effective ways to monitor and assess its impact need to be developed. Remote sensing based on publicly available satellite imagery represents an obvious choice. In the study presented here, we employ a state-of-the-art deep-learning-based approach to automatically detect different types of land cover based on multispectral Sentinel-2 imagery. We then use these data to conduct and present a study of the changes in land use in two geopolitically diverse regions of interest (in Serbia and China and with and without CER-Express infrastructure) for the period of the last three years. Our results show that the standard image-patch-based land cover classification approaches suffer a significant drop in performance in our target scenario in which each pixel needs to be assigned a cove class, but still, validate the applicability of the proposed approach as a remote sensing tool to support the sustainable development of large infrastructure. Updated and accurate land cover maps are essential and crucial for sustainable crop production and efficient land management. However, accurate and efficient land cover mapping is still a challenge for agricultural regions with complicated landscapes. This study proposed a novel spectral-phenological based land cover classification (SPLC) method to identify the land cover for fragmented agricultural landscapes, with less requirement of ground truth data. The SPLC method integrated a pixel-based support vector machine (SVM) algorithm for cropland and various non-cropland classification, and a phenology-based automatic decision tree algorithm for identification of various crop types. It was then tested and applied in two typical case areas (i.e., Jiyuan in the upstream and Yonglian in the downstream) of Hetao Irrigation District (Hetao) in the upper Yellow River basin (YRB), northwest China. The field survey sampling data and the regional visual interpretation maps were jointly used to evaluate the accuracy of land cover classification. Results indicated that stable phenological rules can be established for crop identification even with complex planting patterns, and the SPLC method performed well in land cover mapping in case areas. Four high-accuracy land cover maps were produced for Jiyuan in 2020 and 2021, Yonglian in 2021, and Hetao in 2021. The overall accuracies (OA) can reach 0.90–0.94 based on evaluation with abundant ground truth data, and land cover maps agreed well with the visual interpretation maps in space. Overall, the case application validated the applicability and efficiency of the SPLC method in land cover mapping for regions with fragmented agricultural landscapes, and also implied the potential use in other similar regions. Large-scale, long time-series, and high-precision land-use mapping is the basis for assessing the evolution and sustainability of ecosystems in Xilingol, the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, China. Based on Google Earth Engine (GEE) and Landsat satellite remote-sensing images, the random forest (RF) classification algorithm was applied to create a yearly land-use/land-cover change (LULC) dataset in Xilingol during the past 20 years (2000–2020) and to examine the spatiotemporal characteristics, dynamic changes, and driving mechanisms of LULC using principal component analysis and multiple linear stepwise regression methods. The main findings are summarized as follows. (1) The RF classification algorithm supported by the GEE platform enables fast and accurate acquisition of the LULC dataset, and the overall accuracy is 0.88 ± 0.01. (2) The ecological condition across Xilingol has improved significantly in the last 20 years (2000–2020), and the area of vegetation (grassland and woodland) has increased. Specifically, the area of high-coverage grass and woodland increases (+13.26%, +1.19%), while the area of water and moderate- and low-coverage grass decreases (−15.96%, −7.23%, and −3.27%). Cropland increases first and then decreases (−34.85%) and is mainly distributed in the southeast. The area of deserted land decreases in the south and increases in the center and north, but the total area still decreases (−13.74%). The built-up land expands rapidly (+108.45%). (3) In addition, our results suggest that regional socioeconomic development factors are the primary causes of changes in built-up land, and climate-related factors are the primary causes of water changes, but the correlations between other land-use types and relevant factors are not significant (cropland and grassland). We conclude that the GEE+RF method is capable of automated, long time-series, and high-accuracy land-use mapping, and further changes in climatic, environmental, and socioeconomic development factors, i.e., climate warming and rotational grazing, might have significant implications on regional land surface morphology and landscape dynamics. Sparse mixed forest with trees, shrubs, and green herbaceous vegetation is a typical landscape in the afforestation areas in northwestern China. It is a great challenge to accurately estimate the woody aboveground biomass (AGB) of a sparse mixed forest with heterogeneous woody vegetation types and background types. In this study, a novel woody AGB estimation methodology (VI-AGB model stratified based on herbaceous vegetation coverage) using a combination of Landsat-8, GaoFen-2, and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) images was developed. The results show the following: (1) the woody and herbaceous canopy can be accurately identified using the object-based support vector machine (SVM) classification method based on UAV red-green-blue (RGB) images, with an average overall accuracy and kappa coefficient of 93.44% and 0.91, respectively; (2) compared with the estimation uncertainties of the woody coverage-AGB models without considering the woody vegetation types (RMSE = 14.98 t∙ha−1 and rRMSE = 96.31%), the woody coverage-AGB models stratified based on five woody species (RMSE = 5.82 t∙ha−1 and rRMSE = 37.46%) were 61.1% lower; (3) of the six VIs used in this study, the near-infrared reflectance of pure vegetation (NIRv)-AGB model performed best (RMSE = 7.91 t∙ha−1 and rRMSE = 50.89%), but its performance was still seriously affected by the heterogeneity of the green herbaceous coverage. The normalized difference moisture index (NDMI)-AGB model was the least sensitive to the background. The stratification-based VI-AGB models considering the herbaceous vegetation coverage derived from GaoFen-2 and UAV images can significantly improve the accuracy of the woody AGB estimated using only Landsat VIs, with the RMSE and rRMSE of 6.6 t∙ha−1 and 42.43% for the stratification-based NIRv-AGB models. High spatial resolution information derived from UAV and satellite images has a great potential for improving the woody AGB estimated using only Landsat images in sparsely vegetated areas. Spatial information regarding the arrangement of land cover objects plays an important role in distinguishing the land use types at land parcel or local neighborhood levels. This study investigates the use of graph convolutional networks (GCNs) in order to characterize spatial arrangement features for land use classification from high resolution remote sensing images, with particular interest in comparing land use classifications between different graph-based methods and between different remote sensing images. We examine three kinds of graph-based methods, i.e., feature engineering, graph kernels, and GCNs. Based upon the extracted arrangement features and features regarding the spatial composition of land cover objects, we formulated ten land use classifications. We tested those on two different remote sensing images, which were acquired from GaoFen-2 (with a spatial resolution of 0.8 m) and ZiYuan-3 (of 2.5 m) satellites in 2020 on Fuzhou City, China. Our results showed that land use classifications that are based on the arrangement features derived from GCNs achieved the highest classification accuracy than using graph kernels and handcrafted graph features for both images. We also found that the contribution to separating land use types by arrangement features varies between GaoFen-2 and ZiYuan-3 images, due to the difference in the spatial resolution.
