Many studies in recent years have been devoted to estimating the per-pixel proportions of three broad classes of materials (e.g., photosynthetic vegetation, non-photosynthetic vegetation and bare soil) using data from multispectral sensors. Oftentimes, the estimated proportions are used to monitor environmental change in both urban and non-urban environments. Many of these papers use proportion estimation methods based on the linear mixture model. Very few of these papers assess the accuracy of their estimators. This paper shows how to produce confidence intervals (CIs) and joint confidence regions (JCRs) for the proportions associated with various linear mixture models. There are two main models, both of which assume that the coefficients in the model are non-negative. The first model assumes that the coefficients sum to 1. The second does not, but uses rescaling of the estimated coefficients to produce estimated proportions. Three variants of these two models are also analysed. JCRs are shown to be particularly informative, because they are typically better at localising the information than CIs are. The methodology is illustrated using examples from Landsat Thematic Mapper data at 1169 locations across Australia, each of which has associated field observations. This paper explores the application and advantages of remote sensing, machine learning, and mid-infrared spectroscopy (MIR) as a popular proximal sensing spectroscopy tool in the estimation of soil organic carbon (SOC). It underscores the practical implications and benefits of the integrated approach combining machine learning, remote sensing, and proximal sensing for SOC estimation and prediction across a range of applications, including comprehensive soil health mapping and carbon credit assessment. These advanced technologies offer a promising pathway, reducing costs and resource utilization while improving the precision of SOC estimation. We conducted a comparative analysis between MIR-predicted SOC values and laboratory-measured SOC values using 36 soil samples. The results demonstrate a strong fit (R² = 0.83), underscoring the potential of this integrated approach. While acknowledging that our analysis is based on a limited sample size, these initial findings offer promise and serve as a foundation for future research. We will be providing updates when we obtain more data. Furthermore, this paper explores the potential for commercialising these technologies in Australia, with the aim of helping farmers harness the advantages of carbon markets. Based on our study's findings, coupled with insights from the existing literature, we suggest that adopting this integrated SOC measurement approach could significantly benefit local economies, enhance farmers' ability to monitor changes in soil health, and promote sustainable agricultural practices. Coral reef bleaching events have become more frequent all over the world and pose a serious threat to coral reef ecosystems. Therefore, there is an urgent need for better detection of coral reef bleaching in a time- and cost-saving manner. In recent years, remote sensing technology has often been utilized and gained recognition for coral reef bleaching detection. However, bleaching corals in the water always have weak spectral change signals, causing difficulties in using remote sensing data. Additionally, uneven change samples make it challenging to adequately capture the details of coral reef bleaching detection and produce thematic maps. To resolve these problems, a novel method named coral reef bleaching detection by positive-unlabeled bagging (CBD-PUB) is proposed in this paper. To test the capacity of the method, a series of multi-temporal Sentinel-2 remote sensing images are utilized, and Lizard Island in Australia is taken as a case study area. The pseudo-invariant feature atmospheric correction (PIF) algorithm is adopted to improve coral reef bleaching spectral signals. After that, CBD-PUB is employed to effectively explore coral reef bleaching variation and its corresponding influence relations. The experimental results show that the overall accuracy of bleaching detection by the proposed algorithm reaches 92.1% and outperforms the traditional method. It fully demonstrates the feasibility of the model for the field of coral reef bleaching detection and provides assistance in the monitoring and protection of coral environments. Achieving coastal and shallow-water bathymetry is essential for understanding the marine environment and for coastal management. Bathymetric data in shallow sea areas can currently be obtained using SDB (satellite-derived bathymetry) with multispectral satellites based on depth inversion models. In situ bathymetric data are crucial for validating empirical models but are currently limited in remote and unapproachable areas. In this paper, instead of using the measured water depth data, ICESat-2 (Ice, Cloud, and Land Elevation Satellite-2) ATL03 bathymetric points at different acquisition dates and multispectral imagery from Sentinel-2/GeoEye-1 were used to train and evaluate water depth inversion empirical models in two study regions: Shanhu Island in the South China Sea, and Heron Island in the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) in Australia. However, different sediment types also influenced the SDB results. Therefore, three types of sediments (sand, reef, and coral/algae) were analyzed for Heron Island, and four types of sediments (sand, reef, rubble and coral/algae) were analyzed for Shanhu Island. The results show that accuracy generally improved when sediment classification information was considered in both study areas. For Heron Island, the sand sediments showed the best performance in both models compared to the other sediments, with mean R2 and RMSE values of 0.90 and 1.52 m, respectively, representing a 5.6% improvement of the latter metric. For Shanhu Island, the rubble sediments showed the best accuracy in both models, and the average R2 and RMSE values were 0.97 and 0.65 m, respectively, indicating an RMSE improvement of 15.5%. Ionospheric delay is one of the most problematic errors in single-frequency (SF) global navigation satellite system (GNSS) data processing. Global/regional ionospheric maps (GIM/RIM) are thus vitally important for positioning users. Given the coexistence of multi-GNSS, the integration of quad-constellation observations is essential for improving the distribution of ionospheric penetration points (IPPs) and increasing redundant observations compared with the existing GIM products from the IGS analysis center. In this paper, quad-constellation (GPS/GLONASS/Galileo/BDS) observations are applied to set up the RIM over Australia with uncombined precise point positioning (UC-PPP) and a low-order spherical harmonic function. The generated RIMs are then introduced to ionosphere-corrected (IC) and ionosphere-weighted (IW) single-frequency PPP (IC-SFPPP and IW-SFPPP) to verify their performance in terms of positioning accuracy and convergence time. Taking the CODE GIM as a reference, the results show that the mean root mean square (RMS) of VTEC differences is 0.867 TECUs, and the quad-constellation RIM (referred as 'RIM4′) can improve the RMS of RIMs compared to single-constellation mode at the edge of regional experiment area. The application of the RIM4 in the BDS IC-SFPPP results in a 18.38% improvement (from 100.47 cm to 82.00 cm) of 3D positioning RMS compared to the CODE-GIMs, whereas 35.36% enhancement (from 115.92 cm to 74.62 cm) of 3D positioning RMS is achievable during an active ionospheric period. Moreover, if the criterion of the convergence time is defined as when positioning errors in the horizontal and vertical directions are less than 0.3 m and 0.6 m for 20 consecutive epochs, the IW-SFPPP can significantly speed up the convergence time compared to the uncombined SFPPP; that is, the convergence time is reduced by 52.7% (from 37 min to 17.5 min), 37.2% (from 72.5 min to 45.5 min), and 37.1% (from 62.0 min to 39.0 min) in the north, east and up direction, respectively, at the 68% confidence level. Visible Near infrared and Shortwave Infrared (VNIR/SWIR, 400–2500 nm) remote sensing data is becoming a tool for topsoil properties mapping, bringing spatial information for environmental modeling and land use management. These topsoil properties estimates are based on regression models, linking a key topsoil property to VNIR/SWIR reflectance data. Therefore, the regression model's performances depend on the quality of both topsoil property analysis (measured on laboratory over-ground soil samples) and Bottom-of-Atmosphere (BOA) VNIR/SWIR reflectance which are retrieved from Top-Of-Atmosphere radiance using atmospheric correction (AC) methods. This paper examines the sensitivity of soil organic carbon (SOC) estimation to BOA images depending on two parameters used in AC methods: aerosol optical depth (AOD) in the FLAASH (Fast Line-of-Sight Atmospheric Analysis of Spectral Hypercubes) method and water vapor (WV) in the ATCOR (ATmospheric CORrection) method. This work was based on Earth Observing-1 Hyperion Hyperspectral data acquired over a cultivated area in Australia in 2006. Hyperion radiance data were converted to BOA reflectance using seven values of AOD (from 0.2 to 1.4) and six values of WV (from 0.4 to 5 cm), in FLAASH and ATCOR, respectively. Then a Partial Least Squares regression (PLSR) model was built from each Hyperion BOA data to estimate SOC over bare soil pixels. This study demonstrated that the PLSR models were insensitive to the AOD variation used in the FLAASH method, with R2cv and RMSEcv of 0.79 and 0.4%, respectively. The PLSR models were slightly sensitive to the WV variation used in the ATCOR method, with R2cv ranging from 0.72 to 0.79 and RMSEcv ranging from 0.41 to 0.47. Regardless of the AOD values, the PLSR model based on the best parametrization of the ATCOR model provided similar SOC prediction accuracy to PLSR models using the FLAASH method. Variation in AOD using the FLAASH method did not impact the identification of bare soil pixels coverage which corresponded to 82.35% of the study area, while a variation in WV using the ATCOR method provided a variation of bare soil pixels coverage from 75.04 to 84.04%. Therefore, this work recommends (1) the use of the FLAASH AC method to provide BOA reflectance values from Earth Observing-1 Hyperion Hyperspectral data before SOC mapping or (2) a careful selection of the WV parameter when using ATCOR. There is a long history of coastal erosion caused by frequent storm surges in the coastal regions of Australia, which imposes great threats to communities and infrastructures alongside the beach. Old Bar Beach, New South Wales, Australia, is one such hotspot famous for its extreme coastal erosion. To apply remedial measures such as beach nourishment effectively and economically, estimating/reconstructing the subsurface hydrogeology over the coastal areas is essential. A geophysical tool such as a ground-penetrating radar (GPR) which works on the principle of reflecting electromagnetic (EM) waves, can be conveniently deployed to delineate the soil and rock profiling, water-table depth, bedrock depth, and the subsurface structural features. Here, DeepLabv3+ architecture based newly developed deep convolutional neural networks (DCNNs) were used to establish an inherent non-linear relationship between the GPR data and the EM wave velocity. The presented DCNNs have a lesser number of layers, a lesser number of trainable (learnable) parameters, a high convergence rate and, at the same time, achieve prediction accuracy comparable to that of well-established DeepLabv3+ networks, having high trainable parameters and a relatively low convergence rate. Here, firstly the DCNNs were trained and validated on small 1D datasets. Each dataset contains a 1D GPR trace and a corresponding EM velocity model. The DCNNs turned out to be quite promising in the 1D case, with training, validation, and testing accuracy of approximately 95%, 94%, and 95%, respectively. Secondly, 1D trained weights were applied to 2D synthetic GPR data for EM velocity prediction, and the accuracy of prediction achieved was approximately 95%. Seeing the excellent performance of the DCNNs in the 2D prediction case using 1D trained weights, a large amount of 1D synthetic datasets (approximately 1.2 million) were generated and gaussian noise was added to it to replicate the real field scenario. Thirdly, topographically corrected GPR data acquired over the Old Bar Beach were inverted using the DCNNs trained on 1.2 million 1D synthetic datasets to obtain the subsurface high-resolution, high-precision EM velocity, and ε r distribution information to understand the hydrogeology over the beach. The findings presented in this paper agree well with the previous hydrogeological studies carried out using GPR. Our findings show that DCNNs, along with GPR, can be successfully used in coastal environments for the quick and accurate hydrogeological investigation required for the implementation of coastal erosion mitigation methods such as beach nourishment. This paper presents a soil moisture retrieval scheme from Cyclone Global Navigation Satellite System (CYGNSS) delay-Doppler maps (DDMs) over land. The proposed inversion method consists of a hybrid global and local optimization method and a physics-based bistatic scattering forward model. The forward model was developed for bare-to-densely vegetated terrains, and it predicts the circularly polarized bistatic radar cross section DDM of the land surface. This method was tested on both simulated DDMs and CYGNSS DDMs over the Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) Yanco core validation site in Australia. About 250 CYGNSS DDMs from 2019 and 2020 over the Yanco site were used for validation. The simulated DDMs were for grassland and forest vegetation types. The vegetation type of the Yanco validation site was grassland. The vegetation water content (VWC) was 0.19   kg m − 2 and 4.89   kg m − 2 for the grassland and forest terrains, respectively. For the case when the surface roughness is known to the algorithm, the unbiased root mean square error (ubRMSE) of soil moisture estimates was less than 0.03   m 3 m − 3 while it was approximately 0.06   m 3 m − 3 and 0.09   m 3 m − 3 for the validation results from 2019 and 2020, respectively. The retrieval algorithm generally had enhanced performance for smaller values of soil moisture. For the case when both the soil moisture and surface roughness are unknown to the algorithm and only a single DDM is used for retrieval, the validation results showed an expected reduced performance, with an an ubRMSE of less than 0.12   m 3 m − 3 . The estimation of water quality properties through satellite remote sensing relies on (1) the optical characteristics of the water body, (2) the resolutions (spatial, spectral, radiometric and temporal) of the sensor and (3) algorithm(s) applied. More than 80% of global water bodies fall under Case I (open ocean) waters, dominated by scattering and absorption associated with phytoplankton in the water column. Globally, previous studies show significant correlations between satellite-based retrieval methods and field measurements of absorbing and scattering constituents, while limited research from Australian coastal water bodies appears. This study presents a methodology to extract chlorophyll a properties from surface waters from near-coastal environments, within 2 km of coastline, in Tasmania, south-eastern Australia. We use general purpose, global, long-time series, multi-spectral satellite data, as opposed to ocean colour-specific sensor data. This approach may offer globally applicable tools for combining global satellite image archives with in situ field sensors for water quality monitoring. To enable applications from local to global scales, a cloud-based geospatial analysis workflow was developed and tested on several sites. This work represents the initial stage in developing a semi-automated near-coastal water-quality workflow using easily accessed, fully corrected global multi-spectral datasets alongside large-scale computation and delivery capabilities. Our results indicated a strong correlation between the in situ chlorophyll concentration data and blue-green band ratios from the multi-spectral sensor. In line with published research, environment-specific empirical models exhibited the highest correlations between in situ and satellite measurements, underscoring the importance of tailoring models to specific coastal waters. Our findings may provide the basis for developing this workflow for other sites in Australia. We acknowledge the use of general purpose multi-spectral data such as the Sentinel-2 and Landsat Series, their corrections and algorithms may not be as accurate and precise as ocean colour satellites. The data we are using are more readily accessible and also have true global coverage with global historic archives and regular, global collection will continue at least 10 years in the future. Regardless of sensor specifications, the retrieval method relies on localised algorithm calibration and validation using in situ measurements, which demonstrates close-to-realistic outputs. The 2012 satellite ASTER geoscience maps of Australia were designed to provide public, web-accessible, and spatially comprehensive surface mineralogy for improved mapping and solutions to geoscience challenges. However, a number of the 2012 products were clearly compromised by variable green and/or dry vegetation cover. Here, we show a strategy to first estimate and then unmix the contributions of both these vegetation components to leave, as residual, the target surface mineralogy. The success of this unmixing process is validated by (i) visual suppression/removal of the regional climate and/or local fire-scar vegetation patterns; and (ii) pixel values more closely matching field sample data. In this process, we also found that the 2012 spectral indices used to gauge the AlOH content, AlOH composition, and water content can be improved. The updated (new indices and vegetation unmixed) maps reveal new geoscience information, including: (i) regional "wet" and "dry" zones that appear to express "deep" geological characters often expressed through thick regolith cover, with one zone over the Yilgarn Craton spatially anti-correlated with Archaean gold deposits; (ii) a ~1000 km wide circular feature over the Lake Eyre region defined by a rim of abundant "muscovite" that appears to coincide with opal deposits; (iii) a N–S zonation across the western half of the continent defined by abundant muscovite in the south and kaolinite in the north, which appears to reflect opposing E ↔ W aeolian sediment transport directions across the high-pressure belt; (iv) various paleo-drainage networks, including those over aeolian sand covered the "lowlands" of the Canning Basin, which are characterized by low AlOH content, as well as those over eroding "uplands", such as the Yilgarn Craton, which have complicated compositional patterns; and (v) a chronological history of Miocene barrier shorelines, back-beach lagoons, and alluvial fans across the Eucla Basin, which, to date, had proved elusive to map using other techniques, with potential implications for heavy mineral sand exploration. Combustion power plants emit carbon dioxide (CO2), which is a major contributor to climate change. Direct emissions measurement is cost-prohibitive globally, while reporting varies in detail, latency, and granularity. To fill this gap and greatly increase the number of power plants worldwide with independent emissions monitoring, we developed and applied machine learning (ML) models using power plant water vapor plumes as proxy signals to estimate electric power generation and CO2 emissions using Landsat 8, Sentinel-2, and PlanetScope imagery. Our ML models estimated power plant activity on each image snapshot, then an aggregation model predicted plant utilization over a 30-day period. Lastly, emission factors specific to region, fuel, and plant technology were used to convert the estimated electricity generation into CO2 emissions. Models were trained with reported hourly electricity generation data in the US, Europe, and Australia and were validated with additional generation and emissions data from the US, Europe, Australia, Türkiye, and India. All results with sufficiently large sample sizes indicate that our models outperformed the baseline approaches. In validating our model results against available generation and emissions reported data, we calculated the root mean square error as 1.75 TWh (236 plants across 17 countries over 4 years) and 2.18 Mt CO2 (207 plants across 17 countries over 4 years), respectively. Ultimately, we applied our ML method to plants that constitute 32% of global power plant CO2 emissions, as estimated by Climate TRACE, averaged over the period 2015–2022. This dataset is the most comprehensive independent and free-of-cost global power plant point-source emissions monitoring system currently known to the authors and is made freely available to the public to support global emissions reduction. Smoke haze events have increasingly affected Australia's environmental quality, having demonstrable effects on air quality, climate, and public health. This study employs a hybrid methodology, merging satellite-based aerosol optical depth (AOD) data with Chemical Transport Model (CTM) simulations to comprehensively characterize these events. The AOD data are sourced from the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS), and the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO), and they are statistically evaluated using mean, standard deviation, and root mean square error (RMSE) metrics. Our analysis indicates that the combined dataset provides a more robust representation of smoke haze events than individual datasets. Additionally, the study investigates aerosol distribution patterns and data correlation across the blended dataset and discusses possible improvements such as data imputation and aerosol plume scaling. The outcomes of this investigation contribute to enhancing our understanding of the impacts of smoke haze on various environmental factors and can assist in developing targeted mitigation and management strategies. Land subsidence is a global issue and researchers from all over the world are keen to know the causes of deformation and its further influences. This paper reports the findings from time series InSAR (TS-InSAR) results over the Southern Coalfield, Australia using both ALOS-1 PALSAR (Phased Array type L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar) and ENVISAT ASAR (Advanced Synthetic Aperture Radar) datasets. TS-InSAR has been applied to both rural and urban areas with great success, but very few of them have been applied to regions affected by underground mining activities. The TS-InSAR analysis exploited in this paper is based on GEOS-ATSA, and Measurement Point (MP) pixels are selected according to different geophysical features. Three experiment sites with different geological settings within the study zone are analysed: (1) Wollongong city, which is a relatively stable area; (2) Tahmoor town, a small town affected by underground mining activities; and (3) the Appin underground mining site, a region containing multiple underground mining activities. The TS-InSAR results show that the performance of both C-band and L-band is equally good overWollongong, where the subsidence gradient is not significant and most subsidence rates are between -10 mm·yr-1 to 10 mm·yr-1. However, over the Tahmoor and Appin sites, difference in performances has been observed. Since the maximum displacement gradients that can be detected are different for L-band and C-band-based TS-InSAR methods, some rapid changes could cause the TS-InSAR to fail to estimate the correct displacements. It is well known that L-band can perform better than C-band, especially in underground mining regions and mining-affected regions where the deformation rate is much higher than city areas because of its wavelength. Despite being the driest inhabited continent, Australia has one of the highest per capita water consumptions in the world. In addition, instead of having fit-for-purpose water supplies (using different qualities of water for different applications), highly treated drinking water is used for nearly all of Australia's urban water supply needs, including landscape irrigation. The water requirement of urban landscapes, particularly urban parklands, is of growing concern. The estimation of evapotranspiration (ET) and subsequently plant water requirements in urban vegetation needs to consider the heterogeneity of plants, soils, water, and climate characteristics. This research contributes to a broader effort to establish sustainable irrigation practices within the Adelaide Parklands in Adelaide, South Australia. In this paper, two practical ET estimation approaches are compared to a detailed Soil Water Balance (SWB) analysis over a one year period. One approach is the Water Use Classification of Landscape Plants (WUCOLS) method, which is based on expert opinion on the water needs of different classes of landscape plants. The other is a remote sensing approach based on the Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) sensors on the Terra satellite. Both methods require knowledge of reference ET calculated from meteorological data. The SWB determined that plants consumed 1084 mm· yr-1 of water in ET with an additional 16% lost to drainage past the root zone, an amount sufficient to keep salts from accumulating in the root zone. ET by MODIS EVI was 1088 mm· yr-1, very close to the SWB estimate, while WUCOLS estimated the total water requirement at only 802 mm· yr-1, 26% lower than the SWB estimate and 37% lower than the amount actually added including the drainage fraction. Individual monthly ET by MODIS was not accurate, but these errors were cancelled out to give good agreement on an annual time step. We conclude that the MODIS EVI method can provide accurate estimates of urban water requirements in mixed landscapes large enough to be sampled by MODIS imagery with 250-m resolution such as parklands and golf courses. Quantifying post-fire effects in a forested landscape is important to ascertain burn severity, ecosystem recovery and post-fire hazard assessments and mitigation planning. Reporting of such post-fire effects assumes significance in fire-prone countries such as USA, Australia, Spain, Greece and Portugal where prescribed burns are routinely carried out. This paper describes the use of Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS) to estimate and map change in the forest understorey following a prescribed burn. Eighteen descriptive metrics are derived from bi-temporal TLS which are used to analyse and visualise change in a control and fire-altered plot. Metrics derived are Above Ground Height-based (AGH) percentiles and heights, point count and mean intensity. Metrics such as AGH50change, mean AGHchange and point countchange are sensitive enough to detect subtle fire-induced change (28%-52%) whilst observing little or no change in the control plot (0-4%). A qualitative examination with field measurements of the spatial distribution of burnt areas and percentage area burnt also show similar patterns. This study is novel in that it examines the behaviour of TLS metrics for estimating and mapping fire induced change in understorey structure in a single-scan mode with a minimal fixed reference system. Over the past years, bridge inspection practices and condition assessments were predicated upon long-established manual and paper-based data collection methods which were generally unsafe, time-consuming, imprecise, and labor-intensive, influenced by the experience of the trained inspectors involved. In recent years, the ability to turn an actual civil infrastructure asset into a detailed and precise digital model using state-of-the-art emerging technologies such as laser scanners has become in demand among structural engineers and managers, especially bridge asset managers. Although advanced remote technologies such as Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS) are recently established to overcome these challenges, the research on this subject is still lacking a comprehensive methodology for a reliable TLS-based bridge inspection and a well-detailed Bridge Information Model (BrIM) development. In this regard, the application of BrIM as a shared platform including a geometrical 3D CAD model connected to non-geometrical data can benefit asset managers, and significantly improve bridge management systems. Therefore, this research aims not only to provide a practical methodology for TLS-derived BrIM but also to serve a novel sliced-based approach for bridge geometric Computer-Aided Design (CAD) model extraction. This methodology was further verified and demonstrated via a case study on a cable-stayed bridge called Werrington Bridge, located in New South Wales (NSW), Australia. In this case, the process of extracting a precise 3D CAD model from TLS data using the sliced-based method and a workflow to connect non-geometrical information and develop a BrIM are elaborated. The exacerbation of wildfires, attributed to the effects of climate change, presents substantial risks to ecological systems, infrastructure, and human well-being. In the context of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those related to climate action, prioritizing the assessment and management of the occurrence and intensity of extensive wildfires is of utmost importance. In recent times, there has been a significant increase in the frequency and severity of widespread wildfires worldwide, affecting several locations, including Australia, Italy, and the United States of America. The presence of complex phenomena marked by limited predictability leads to significant negative impacts on biodiversity and human lives. The utilization of satellite-derived data with neural networks, such as convolutional neural networks (CNNs), is a potentially advantageous approach for augmenting the monitoring capabilities of wildfires. This research examines the generalization capability of four neural network models, namely the fully connected (FC), one-dimensional (1D) CNN, two-dimensional (2D) CNN, and three-dimensional (3D) CNN model. Each model's performance, as measured by accuracy, recall, and F1 scores, is assessed through K-fold cross-validation. Subsequently, T-statistics and p-values are computed based on these metrics to conduct a statistical comparison among the different models, allowing us to quantify the degree of similarity or dissimilarity between them. By using training data from Australia and Sicily, the performances of the trained model are evaluated on the test dataset from Oregon. The results are promising, with cross-validation on the training dataset producing mean precision, recall, and F1 scores ranging between approximately 0.97 and 0.98. Especially, the fully connected model has superior generalization capabilities, whilst the 3D CNN offers more refined and less distorted classifications. However, certain issues, such as false fire detection and confusion between smoke and shadows, persist. The aforementioned methodologies offer significant perspectives on the capabilities of neural network technologies in supporting the detection and management of wildfires. These approaches address the crucial matter of domain transferability and the associated dependability of predictions in new regions. Mapping irrigated areas using remotely sensed imagery has been widely applied to support agricultural water management; however, accuracy is often compromised by the in-field heterogeneity of and interannual variability in crop conditions. This paper addresses these key issues. Two classification methods were employed to map irrigated fields using normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) values derived from Landsat 7 and Landsat 8: a dynamic thresholding method (method one) and a random forest method (method two). To improve the representativeness of field-level NDVI aggregates, which are the key inputs in our methods, a Gaussian mixture model (GMM)-based filtering approach was adopted to remove noncrop pixels (e.g., trees and bare soils) and mixed pixels along the field boundary. To improve the temporal transferability of method one we dynamically determined the threshold value to account for the impact of interannual weather variability based on the dynamic range of NDVI values. In method two an innovative training sample pool was designed for the random forest modeling to enable automatic calibration for each season, which contributes to consistent performance across years. The irrigated field mapping was applied to a major irrigation district in Australia from 2011 to 2018, for summer and winter cropping seasons separately. The results showed that using GMM-based filtering can markedly improve field-level data quality and avoid up to 1/3 of omission errors for irrigated fields. Method two showed superior performance, exhibiting consistent and good accuracy (kappa > 0.9) for both seasons. The classified maps in wet winter seasons should be used with caution, because rainfall alone can largely meet plant water requirements, leaving the contribution of irrigation to the surface spectral signature weak. Bedforms are key components of Earth surfaces and yet their evaluation typically relies on manual measurements that are challenging to reproduce. Several methods exist to automate their identification and calculate their metrics, but they often exhibit limitations where applied at large scales. This paper presents an innovative workflow for identifying and measuring individual depositional bedforms. The workflow relies on the identification of local minima and maxima that are grouped by neighbourhood analysis and calibrated using curvature. The method was trialed using a synthetic digital elevation model and two bathymetry surveys from Australia's northwest marine region, resulting in the identification of nearly 2000 bedforms. The comparison of the metrics calculated for each individual feature with manual measurements show differences of less than 10%, indicating the robustness of the workflow. The cross-comparison of the metrics resulted in the definition of several sub-types of bedforms, including sandwaves and palaeoshorelines, that were then correlated with oceanic conditions, further corroborating the validity of the workflow. Results from this study support the idea that the use of automated methods to characterise bedforms should be further developed and that the integration of automated measurements at large scales will support the development of new classification charts that currently rely solely on manual measurements. This paper proposes an automated active fire detection framework using Sentinel-2 imagery. The framework is made up of three basic parts including data collection and preprocessing, deep-learning-based active fire detection, and final product generation modules. The active fire detection module is developed on a specifically designed dual-domain channel-position attention (DCPA)+HRNetV2 model and a dataset with semi-manually annotated active fire samples is constructed over wildfires that commenced on the east coast of Australia and the west coast of the United States in 2019–2020 for the training process. This dataset can be used as a benchmark for other deep-learning-based algorithms to improve active fire detection accuracy. The performance of active fire detection is evaluated regarding the detection accuracy of deep-learning-based models and the processing efficiency of the whole framework. Results indicate that the DCPA and HRNetV2 combination surpasses DeepLabV3 and HRNetV2 models for active fire detection. In addition, the automated framework can deliver active fire detection results of Sentinel-2 inputs with coverage of about 12,000 km2 (including data download) in less than 6 min, where average intersections over union (IoUs) of 70.4% and 71.9% were achieved in tests over Australia and the United States, respectively. Concepts in this framework can be further applied to other remote sensing sensors with data acquisitions in SWIR-NIR-Red ranges and can serve as a powerful tool to deal with large volumes of high-resolution data used in future fire monitoring systems and as a cost-efficient resource in support of governments and fire service agencies that need timely, optimized firefighting plans. Operational monitoring of vegetation and land surface change over large areas can make good use of satellite sensors that measure radiance reflected from the Earth's surface. Monitoring programs use multiple images for complete spatial coverage over time. Accurate retrievals of vegetation cover and vegetation change estimates can be hampered by variation, in both space and time, in the measured radiance, caused by atmospheric conditions, topography, sensor location, and sun elevation. In order to obtain estimates of cover that are comparable between images, and to retrieve accurate estimates of change, these sources of variation must be removed. In this paper we present a preprocessing scheme for minimising atmospheric, topographic and bi-directional reflectance effects on Landsat-5 TM, Landsat-7 ETM+ and SPOT-5 HRG imagery. The approach involves atmospheric correction to compute surface-leaving radiance, and bi-directional reflectance modelling to remove the effects of topography and angular variation in reflectance. The bi-directional reflectance model has been parameterised for eastern Australia, but the general approach is more widely applicable. The result is surface reflectance standardised to a fixed viewing and illumination geometry. The method can be applied to the entire record for these instruments, without intervention, which is of increasing importance with the increased availability of long term image archives. Validation shows that the corrections improve the estimation of reflectance at any given angular configuration, thus allowing the removal from the reflectance signal of much variation due to factors independent of the land surface. The method has been used to process over 45,000 Landsat-5 TM and Landsat-7 ETM+ scenes and 2,500 SPOT-5 scenes, over eastern Australia, and is now in use in operational monitoring programs. In this paper, a deep learning long-short-term memory (LSTM) method is applied to the forecasting of the critical frequency of the ionosphere F2 layer (foF2). Hourly values of foF2 from 10 ionospheric stations in China and Australia (based on availability) from 2006 to 2019 are used for training and verifying. While 2015 and 2019 are exclusive for verifying the forecasting accuracy. The inputs of the LSTM model are sequential data for the previous values, which include local time (LT), day number, solar zenith angle, the sunspot number (SSN), the daily F10.7 solar flux, geomagnetic the Ap and Kp indices, geographic coordinates, neutral winds, and the observed value of foF2 at the previous moment. To evaluate the forecasting ability of the deep learning LSTM model, two different neural network forecasting models: a back-propagation neural network (BPNN) and a genetic algorithm optimized backpropagation neural network (GABP) were established for comparative analysis. The foF2 parameters were forecasted under geomagnetic quiet and geomagnetic disturbed conditions during solar activity maximum (2015) and minimum (2019), respectively. The forecasting results of these models are compared with those of the international reference ionosphere model (IRI2016) and the measurements. The diurnal and seasonal variations of foF2 for the 4 models were compared and analyzed from 8 selected verification stations. The forecasting results reveal that the deep learning LSTM model presents the optimal performance of all models in forecasting the time series of foF2, while the IRI2016 model has the poorest forecasting performance, and the BPNN model and GABP model are between two of them. Mineral prospectivity mapping is a crucial technique for discovering new economic mineral deposits. However, detailed knowledge-based geological exploration and interpretations generally involve significant costs, time, and human resources. In this study, an ensemble machine learning approach was tested using geoscience datasets to map Cu-Au and Pb-Zn mineral prospectivity in the Cobar Basin, NSW, Australia. The input datasets (magnetic, gravity, faults, electromagnetic, and magnetotelluric data layers) were chosen by considering their association with Cu-Au and Pb-Zn mineralization patterns. Three machine learning algorithms, namely random forest (RF), support vector machine (SVM), and maximum-likelihood (MaxL) classification, were applied to the input data. The results of the three algorithms were ensembled to produce Cu-Au and Pb-Zn prospectivity maps over the Cobar Basin with improved classification accuracy. The findings demonstrate good agreement with known mineral occurrence points and existing mineral prospectivity maps developed using the weights-of-evidence (WofE) method. The ability to capture training points accurately and the simplicity of the proposed approach make it advantageous over complex mineral prospectivity mapping methods, to serve as a preliminary evaluation technique. The methodology can be modified with different datasets and algorithms, facilitating the investigations of mineral prospectivity in other regions and providing guidance for more detailed, high-resolution geological investigations. Five global monthly top-of-atmosphere (TOA) outgoing longwave radiation (OLR) products are evaluated in this study, including the products derived from the High-Resolution Infrared Radiation Sounder (HIRS), Clouds and the Earth's Radiant Energy System (CERES), Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR), the CM SAF cLoud, Albedo and surface RAdiation dataset from AVHRR data (CLARA), and the Global Energy and Water Cycle EXchanges (GEWEX) project. Results show that overall there is good consistency among these five products. Larger differences are found between GEWEX and CERES (HIRS) after (before) 2000 (RMSE ~ 5 W/m2), particularly in the tropical regions. In terms of global mean values, GEWEX shows large differences with the other products from the year 1992 to 2002, and CLARA shows large differences from the year 1979 to 1981, which are more obvious in the global ocean values. Large discrepancies among these products exist at low latitudinal bands, particularly before the year 2000. Comparisons of recent global forest products at higher resolutions that are only available annually have shown major disagreements among forested areas in highly fragmented landscapes. A holistic reductionist framework and colourimetry were applied to create a chorologic typology of environmental indicators to map forest extent with an emphasis on large-scale performance, interpretability/communication, and spatial–temporal scalability. Interpretation keys were created to identify forest and non-forest features, and a set of candidate tree cover indices were developed and compared with a decision matrix of prescribed criteria. The candidate indices were intentionally limited to those applying only the visible and NIR bands to obtain the highest possible resolution and be compatible with commonly available multispectral satellites and higher resolution sensors, including aerial and potentially UAV/drone sensors. A new High-Resolution Tree Cover Index (HRTCI) in combination with the Green band was selected as the best index based on scores from the decision matrix. To further improve the performance of the indices, the chorologic typology included two insolation indices, a water index and a NIR surface saturation index, to exclude any remaining spectrally similar but unrelated land cover features such as agriculture, water, and built-up features using a process of elimination. The approach was applied to the four seasons across a wide range of ecosystems in south-eastern Australia, with and without regionalisation, to identify which season produces the most accurate results for each ecoregion and to assess the potential for mitigating the spatial–temporal scaling effects of the Modifiable Spatio-Temporal Unit Problem. Autumn was found to be the most effective season, yielding overall accuracies of 94.19% for the full extent, 95.79% for the temperate zone, and 95.71% for the arid zone. It produced the greatest spatial agreement between two recognised global products, the GEDI forest heights extent and the ESA WorldCover Tree cover class. To monitor the Very-Low-Frequency (VLF) environment, a VLF detection system has been installed in Suizhou, China, a location with the longitude almost identical to that of the NWC transmitter in Australia. In the years 2019 and 2020, two solar eclipses crossed the NWC–Suizhou path at different locations. Each solar eclipse event represents a naturally occurring controlled experiment, but these two events are unique in that similar levels of electron density variation occurred at different locations along the VLF propagation path. Therefore, we conducted a comparative study using the VLF measurements during these two eclipses. Previous studies mostly estimated a pair of the reflection height (h′) and sharpness parameter (β) using the Long Wavelength Propagation Capability code, whereas, in this study, we use the VLF amplitude and phase as constraints in order to find the electron density change that best explains the VLF measurements. The eclipse measurements could be best explained if the path-averaged β value was 0.56 and 0.62 km−1 for the 2019 and 2020 eclipse, respectively. The VLF reflection height increased from 71.5 to 73.3 km for the 2019 eclipse and from 71.1 to 72.8 km for the 2020 eclipse. The best-fit β values were consistent with the Faraday International Reference Ionosphere model and statistical studies, and the h′ change was also consistent with previous studies and theoretical calculations. Moreover, present results suggested that VLF signals collected by a single receiver were not sensitive to where the electron density change occurs along the propagation path but reflected the average path condition. Therefore, a network of VLF receivers is required in order to monitor in real time the spatial extent of the space weather events that disturb the lower ionosphere. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

One of the most valuable and nutritionally essential agricultural commodities worldwide is milk. The European Union and New Zealand are the second- and third-largest exporting regions of milk products and rely heavily on pasture-based production systems. They are comparable to the Australian systems investigated in this study. With projections of herd decline, increased milk yield must be obtained from a combination of animal genetics and feed efficiencies. Accurate pasture biomass estimation across all seasons will improve feed efficiency and increase the productivity of dairy farms; however, the existing time-consuming and manual methods of pasture measurement limit improvements to utilisation. In this study, Sentinel-2 (S2) band and spectral index (SI) information were coupled with the broad season and management-derived datasets using a Random Forest (RF) machine learning (ML) framework to develop a perennial ryegrass (PRG) biomass prediction model accurate to +/−500 kg DM/ha, and that could predict pasture yield above 3000 kg DM/ha. Measurements of PRG biomass were taken from 11 working dairy farms across southeastern Australia over 2019–2021. Of the 68 possible variables investigated, multiple simulations identified 12 S2 bands and 9 SI, management and season as the most important variables, where Short-Wave Infrared (SWIR) bands were the most influential in predicting pasture biomass above 4000 kg DM/ha. Conditional Latin Hypercube Sampling (cLHS) was used to split the dataset into 80% and 20% for model calibration and internal validation in addition to an entirely independent validation dataset. The combined internal model validation showed R2 = 0.90, LCCC = 0.72, RMSE = 439.49 kg DM/ha, NRMSE = 15.08, and the combined independent validation had R2 = 0.88, LCCC = 0.68, RMSE = 457.05 kg DM/ha, NRMSE = 19.83. The key findings of this study indicated that the data obtained from the S2 bands and SI were appropriate for making accurate estimations of PRG biomass. Furthermore, including SWIR bands significantly improved the model. Finally, by utilising an RF ML model, a single 'global' model can automate PRG biomass prediction with high accuracy across extensive regions of all seasons and types of farm management. The prediction of sea level rise is extremely important for improved future climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies. This study uses a hybrid convolutional neural Network (CNN) and a bidirectional long short-term (BiLSTM) model with successive variational mode decomposition (SVMD) to predict the absolute sea level for two study sites in Australia (Port Kembla and Milner Bay). More importantly, the sea level measurements using a tide gauge were corrected using Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) measurements of the vertical land movement (VLM). The SVMD-CNN-BiLSTM model was benchmarked by a multi-layer perceptron (MLP), support vector regression (SVR) and gradient boosting (GB). The SVMD-CNN-BiLSTM model outperformed all the comparative models with high correlation values of more than 0.95 for Port Kembla and Milner Bay. Similarly, the SVMD-CNN-BiLSTM model achieved the highest values for the Willmott index, the Nash–Sutcliffe index and the Legates and McCabe index for both study sites. The projected linear trend showed the expected annual mean sea rise for 2030. Using the current trend, Port Kembla was projected to have an MSL value of 1.03 m with a rate rise of approx. 4.5 mm/year. The rate of the MSL for Milner Bay was comparatively lower with a value of approx. 2.75 mm/year and an expected MSL value of 1.27 m for the year 2030. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The violent and persistent wildfires that broke out along the southeast coast of Australia in 2019 caused a large number of pollutant emissions, which seriously affected air quality and the global climate. The existing two methods for estimating combustion emissions based on burned area and fire radiative power mainly use a medium resolution imaging spectrometer (MODIS) on the Aqua and Terra satellites. However, the low temporal resolution of MODIS and insensitivity to small fires lead to deviation in the estimation of fire emissions. In order to solve this problem, the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) with better performance is adopted in this paper, combined with the fire diurnal cycle information obtained by geostationary satellite Himawari-8, to explore the spatio-temporal model of biomass combustion emissions. Using this, a high-spatial- and -temporal-resolution fire emission inventory was generated for southeastern Australia from November 2019 to January 2020, which aims to fully consider the highly dynamic nature of fires and small fires (low FRP) that are much lower than the MODIS burned area or active fire detection limit, with emphasis on dry matter burned (DMB). We found that during the study period, the fire gradually moved from north to south, and the diurnal cycle of the fire in the study area changed greatly. The peak time of the fire gradually delayed as the fire moved south. Our inventory shows that the DMB in southeast Australia during the study period was about 146 Tg, with major burned regions distributed along the Great Dividing Range, with December 2019 being the main burning period. The total DMB we calculated is 0.5–3.1 times that reported by the GFAS (Global Fire Assimilation System) and 1.5 to 4 times lower than that obtained using the traditional "Burned Area Based Method (FINN)". We believe that the GFAS may underestimate the results by ignoring a large number of small fires, and that the excessive combustion rate used in the FINN may be a source of overestimation. Therefore, we conclude that the combination of high-temporal-resolution and high-spatial-resolution satellites can improve FRE estimation and may also allow further verification of biomass combustion estimates from different inventories, which are far better approaches for fire emission estimation. This paper describes a computation method for obtaining dielectric constant using Global Navigation Satellite System reflectometry (GNSS-R) products. Dielectric constant is a crucial component in the soil moisture retrieval process using reflected GNSS signals. The reflectivity for circular polarized signals is combined with the dielectric constant equation that is used for radiometer observations. Data from the Cyclone Global Navigation Satellite System (CYGNSS) mission, an eight-nanosatellite constellation for GNSS-R, are used for computing dielectric constant. Data from the Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) mission are used to measure the soil moisture through its radiometer, and they are considered as a reference to confirm the accuracy of the new dielectric constant calculation method. The analyzed locations have been chosen that correspond to sites used for the calibration and validation of the SMAP soil moisture product using in-situ measurement data. The retrieved results, especially in the case of a specular point around Yanco, Australia, show that the estimated results track closely to the soil moisture results, and the Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) in the estimated dielectric constant is approximately 5.73. Similar results can be obtained when the specular point is located near the Texas Soil Moisture Network (TxSON), USA. These results indicate that the analysis procedure is well-defined, and it lays the foundation for obtaining quantitative soil moisture content using the GNSS reflectometry results. Future work will include applying the computation product to determine the characteristics that will allow for the separation of coherent and incoherent signals in delay Doppler maps, as well as to develop local soil moisture models. A long-term archive of cloud properties (cloud top pressure, CTP; and cloud effective emissivity, ε) determined from High-resolution Infrared Radiation Sounder (HIRS) data is investigated for evidence of regional cloud cover change. In the 17 years between 1985 and 2001, different cloud types are analysed over the Australian region (10° S–45° S, 105° E–160° E) and areas of change in total cloud frequency examined. Total cloud frequency change over the Australian region between two adjacent eight-year time periods (1994 to 2001 minus 1985 to 1992) shows the largest increases (ranges between 6% and 12%) of average HIRS total cloud cover occurring over the offshore regions to the northwest and northeast of the continent. Over land, the largest reduction of average HIRS total cloud frequency is in the southwestern region of Australia (between 2% and 8%). Through central Australia, there is a 2% to 7% increase in average HIRS total cloud frequency when comparing these eight-year periods. This paper examines the regional cloud changes in 17 years over Australia that are embedded in global cloud statistics. Examining total HIRS cloud cover frequency over Australia and comparing two different eight-year time periods, has highlighted notable areas of average change. Preliminary reporting of satellite-derived HIRS cloud products and Global Precipitation Climatology Project (GPCP) rainfall products during La Niña seasons between 1985 and 2001 has also been undertaken. Increased demand for sustainable timber products has resulted in large investments in agroforestry in Australia, with plantations growing various Pinus species, selected to suit a plantation's environment. Juvenile Pinus species have a low fire tolerance. With Australia's history of wildfires and the likelihood of climate change exacerbating that risk, the potential for a total loss of invested capital is high unless cost-effective targeted risk minimisation is part of forest management plans. Based on the belief that the understory profiles within the juvenile plantations are a major factor determining fuel hazard risks, an accurate assessment of these profiles is required to effectively mitigate those risks. At present, assessment protocols are largely reliant on ground-based observations, which are labour-intensive, time consuming, and expensive. This research project investigates the effectiveness of using geospatial analysis of drone-derived photographic data collected in the commercial pine plantations of south-eastern Queensland as a cost-saving alternative to current fuel hazard risk assessment practices. Understory composition was determined using the supervised classification of orthomosaic images together with derivations of canopy height models (CHMs). The CHMs were subjected to marker-controlled watershed segmentation (MCWS) analysis, isolating and removing the plantation pine trees, enabling the quantification of understory fuel profiles. The method used proved highly applicable to immature forest environments with minimal canopy closure, but became less reliable for close canopied older plantations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To increase data availability and accuracy in the coastal zone, especially in the last 5 km to the coast, we present a SCMR (Seamless Combination of Multiple Retrackers) processing strategy to combine sea surface height (SSH) estimates from waveform retrackers of SGDR MLE4, ALES, WLS3 and MB4 for Jason-3 and Saral missions, and of SAMOSA and SAMOSA+ for Sentinel-3A mission in the Australian coastal zone. The SCMR does not require the waveform classification result. It includes two steps: (1) estimating and removing the SSH bias due mainly to the significant wave height (SWH) difference-dependent height differences, and (2) determining the optimal along-track SSH profile by using the Dijkstra algorithm. In the study region, the results show that the SCMR increases the data availability by up to 15% in the last 5 km to the coast and reduces the noise level by 28–34% at the spatial scales < 2.5 km. The validation results against tide gauges show that SCMR-derived SSH estimates achieve a better accuracy than that from any single retracker, with the improvement percentage of 6.26% and 4.94% over 0–10 km and 20–100 km distance bands, respectively. The eruption of the Hunga Tonga–Hunga Ha'apai (HTHH) volcano on 15 January 2022 injected large amounts of water vapor (H2O) directly into the stratosphere. While normal background levels of stratospheric H2O are not detectable in radio occultation (RO) measurements, effects of the HTHH eruption are clearly observed as anomalous refractivity profiles from COSMIC-2, suggesting the possibility of detecting the HTHH H2O signal. To separate temperature and H2O effects on refractivity, we use co-located temperature observations from the Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS) to constrain a simplified H2O retrieval. Our results show enhancements of H2O up to ~2500–3500 ppmv in the stratosphere (~29–33 km) in the days following the HTHH eruption, with propagating patterns that follow the dispersing volcanic plume. The stratospheric H2O profiles derived from RO are in reasonable agreement with limited radiosonde observations over Australia. The H2O profiles during the first few days after the eruption show descent of the plume at a rate of ~−1 km/day, likely due to strong radiative cooling (~−10 K/day) induced by high H2O concentrations; slower descent (~−200 m/day) is observed over the following week as the plume disperses. The total mass of H2O injected by HTHH is estimated as 110 ± 14 Tg from measurements in the early plumes during 16–18 January, which equates to approximately 8% of the background global mass of stratospheric H2O. Satellite imagery is the only feasible approach to annual monitoring and reporting on land cover change. Unfortunately, conventional pixel-based classification methods based on spectral response only (e.g., using random forests algorithms) have shown a lack of spatial and temporal stability due, for instance, to variability between individual pixels and changes in vegetation condition, respectively. Machine learning methods that consider spatial patterns in addition to reflectance can address some of these issues. In this study, a convolutional neural network (CNN) model, U-Net, was trained for a 500 km × 500 km region in southeast Australia using annual Landsat geomedian data for the relatively dry and wet years of 2018 and 2020, respectively. The label data for model training was an eight-class classification inferred from a static land-use map, enhanced using forest-extent mapping. Here, we wished to analyse the benefits of CNN-based land cover mapping and reporting over 34 years (1987–2020). We used the trained model to generate annual land cover maps for a 100 km × 100 km tile near the Australian Capital Territory. We developed innovative diagnostic methods to assess spatial and temporal stability, analysed how the CNN method differs from pixel-based mapping and compared it with two reference land cover products available for some years. Our U-Net CNN results showed better spatial and temporal stability with, respectively, overall accuracy of 89% verses 82% for reference pixel-based mapping, and 76% of pixels unchanged over 33 years. This gave a clearer insight into where and when land cover change occurred compared to reference mapping, where only 30% of pixels were conserved. Remaining issues include edge effects associated with the CNN method and a limited ability to distinguish some land cover types (e.g., broadacre crops vs. pasture). We conclude that the CNN model was better for understanding broad-scale land cover change, use in environmental accounting and natural resource management, whereas pixel-based approaches sometimes more accurately represented small-scale changes in land cover. The characterisation of fuel distribution across heterogeneous landscapes is important for wildfire mitigation, validating fuel models, and evaluating fuel treatment outcomes. However, efficient fuel mapping at a landscape scale is challenging. Fuel hazard metrics were obtained using Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS) and the current operational approach (visual fuel assessment) for seven sites across south-eastern Australia. These point-based metrics were then up-scaled to a continuous fuel map, an area relevant to fire management using random forest modelling, with predictor variables derived from Airborne Laser Scanning (ALS), Sentinel 2A images, and climate and soil data. The model trained and validated with TLS observations (R 2 = 0.51 for near-surface fuel cover and 0.31 for elevated fuel cover) was found to have higher predictive power than the model trained with visual fuel assessments (R 2 = −0.1 for the cover of both fuel layers). Models for height derived from TLS observations exhibited low-to-moderate performance for the near-surface (R 2 = 0.23) and canopy layers (R 2 = 0.25). The results from this study provide practical guidance for the selection of training data sources and can be utilised by fire managers to accurately generate fuel maps across an area relevant to operational fire management decisions. Tropical cyclones (TCs) have long posed a significant threat to Australia's population, infrastructure, and environment. This threat may grow under climate change as projections indicate continuing rises in sea level and increases in rainfall during TC events. Previous Australian TC risk assessment efforts have focused on the risk from wind, whereas a holistic approach requires multi-hazard risk assessments that also consider impacts of other TC-related hazards. This study assessed and mapped TC risk nationwide, focusing on the impacts on population and infrastructure from the TC-related hazards of wind, storm surges, flooding, and landslides. Risk maps were created at the Local Government Area (LGA) level for all of Australia, using collated data on multiple hazards, exposure, and vulnerability. The results demonstrated that the risk posed by all hazards was highest for coastal LGAs of eastern Queensland and New South Wales, followed by medium risk across Northern Territory and north-western Western Australia. Further enhancement and validation of risk maps developed in this study will provide decision makers with the information needed to reduce TC risk, save lives, and prevent damage to infrastructure. Predictive vegetation mapping is an essential tool for managing and conserving high conservation-value forests. Cool temperate rainforests (Rainforest) and cool temperate mixed forests (Mixed Forest, i.e., rainforest spp. overtopped by large remnant Eucalyptus trees) are threatened forest types in the Central Highlands of Victoria. Logging of these forest types is prohibited; however, the surrounding native Eucalyptus forests can be logged in some areas of the landscape. This requires accurate mapping and delineation of these vegetation types. In this study, we combine niche modelling, multispectral imagery, and LiDAR data to improve predictive vegetation mapping of these two threatened ecosystems in southeast Australia. We used a dataset of 1586 plots partitioned into four distinct forest types that occur in close proximity in the Central Highlands: Eucalyptus, Tree fern, Mixed Forest, and Rainforest. We calibrated our model on a training dataset and validated it on a spatially distinct testing dataset. To avoid overfitting, we used Bayesian regularized multinomial regression to relate predictors to our four forest types. We found that multispectral predictors were able to distinguish Rainforest from Eucalyptus forests due to differences in their spectral signatures. LiDAR-derived predictors were effective at discriminating Mixed Forest from Rainforest based on forest structure, particularly LiDAR predictors based on existing domain knowledge of the system. For example, the best predictor of Mixed Forest was the presence of Rainforest-type understorey overtopped by large Eucalyptus crowns, which is effectively aligned with the regulatory definition of Mixed Forest. Environmental predictors improved model performance marginally, but helped discriminate riparian forests from Rainforest. However, the best model for classifying forest types was the model that included all three classes of predictors (i.e., spectral, structural, and environmental). Using multiple data sources with differing strengths improved classification accuracy and successfully predicted the identity of 88% of the plots. Our study demonstrated that multi-source methods are important for capturing different properties of the data that discriminate ecosystems. In addition, the multi-source approach facilitated adding custom metrics based on domain knowledge which in turn improved the mapping of high conservation-value forest. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Rapid and widespread monitoring of inland and coastal water quality occurs through the use of remote sensing and near-surface water quality sensors. A new addition is the development of smartphone applications (Apps) to measure and record surface reflectance, water color and water quality parameters. In this paper, we present a field study of the HydroColor (HC, measures RGB reflectance and suspended particulate matter (SPM)) and EyeOnWater (EoW, determines the Forel–Ule scale—an indication to the visual appearance of the water surface) smartphone Apps to evaluate water quality for inland waters in Eastern Australia. The Brisbane river, multiple lakes and reservoirs and lagoons in Queensland and New South Wales were visited; hyperspectral reflection spectra were collected and water samples were analysed in the laboratory as reference. Based on detailed measurements at 32 sites, covering inland waters with a large range in sediment and algal concentrations, we find that both water quality Apps are close, but not quite on par with scientific spectrometers. EoW is a robust application that manages to capture the color of water with accuracy and precision. HC has great potential, but is influenced by errors in the observational procedure and errors in the processing of images in the iPhone. The results show that repeated observations help to reduce the effects of outliers, while implementation of camera response functions and processing should help to reduce systematic errors. For both Apps, no universal conversion to water quality composition is established, and we conclude that: (1) replicated measurements are useful; (2) color is a reliable monitoring parameter in its own right but it should not be used for other water quality variables, and; (3) tailored algorithms to convert reflectance and color to composition could be developed for lakes individually. Accurate measurements of the structural characteristics of trees such as height, diameter, sweep and taper are an important part of forest inventories in managed forests and commercial plantations. Both terrestrial and aerial LiDAR are currently employed to produce pointcloud data from which inventory metrics can be determined. Terrestrial/ground-based scanning typically provides pointclouds resolutions of many thousands of points per m 2 from which tree stems can be observed and inventory measurements made directly, whereas typical resolutions from aerial scanning (tens of points per m 2 ) require inventory metrics to be regressed from LiDAR variables using inventory reference data collected from the ground. Recent developments in miniaturised LiDAR sensors are enabling aerial capture of pointclouds from low-flying aircraft at high-resolutions (hundreds of points per m 2 ) from which tree stem information starts to become directly visible, enabling the possibility for plot-scale inventories that do not require access to the ground. In this paper, we develop new approaches to automated tree detection, segmentation and stem reconstruction using algorithms based on deep supervised machine learning which are designed for use with aerially acquired high-resolution LiDAR pointclouds. Our approach is able to isolate individual trees, determine tree stem points and further build a segmented model of the main tree stem that encompasses tree height, diameter, taper, and sweep. Through the use of deep learning models, our approach is able to adapt to variations in pointcloud densities and partial occlusions that are particularly prevalent when data is captured from the air. Early prediction of sugarcane crop yield at the commercial block level (unit area of a single crop of the same variety, ratoon or planting date) offers significant benefit to growers, consultants, millers, policy makers, crop insurance companies and researchers. This current study explored a remote sensing based approach for predicting sugarcane yield at the block level by further developing a regionally specific Landsat time series model and including individual crop sowing (or previous seasons' harvest) date. For the Bundaberg growing region of Australia this extends over a five months period, from July to November. For this analysis, the sugarcane blocks were clustered into 10 groups based on their specific planting or ratoon commencement date within the specified five months period. These clustered or groups of blocks were named 'bins'. Cloud free (<20%) satellite data from the polar-orbiting Landsat-8 (launched 2013), Sentinel-2A (launched 2015) and Sentinel-2B (launched 2017) sensors were acquired over the cane growing region in Bundaberg (area of 32,983 ha), from the growing season starting in July 2014, with the average green normalised difference vegetation index (GNDVI) derived for each block. The number of images acquired for each season was defined by the number of cloud free acquisitions. Using the Simple Linear Machine Learning (ML) algorithm, the extracted Landsat derived GNDVI values for each of the blocks were converted to Sentinel GNDVI. The average GNDVI of each 'bin' was plotted and a quadratic model was fitted through the time series to identify the peak growth stage defined as the maximum GNDVI value. The model derived maximum GNDVI values for each of the bins were then regressed against the average actual yield (t·ha-1) achieved for the respective bin over the five growing years, producing strong correlations (R2 = 0.92 to 0.99). The quadratic curves developed for the different bins were shifted according to the specific planting or ratoon date of an individual block allowing for the peak GNDVI value of the block to be calculated, regressed against the actual block yield (t·ha-1) and the prediction of yield to be made. To validate the accuracies of the 10 time series algorithms representing each of the 10 bins, 592 individual blocks were selected from the Bundaberg region during the 2019 harvest season. The crops were clustered into the appropriate bins with the respective algorithm applied. From a Sentinel image acquired on the 5 May 2019, the prediction accuracies were encouraging (R2 = 0.87 and RMSE = 11.33 (t·ha-1)) when compared to actual harvested yield, as reported by the mill. The results presented in this paper demonstrate significant progress in the accurate prediction of sugarcane yield at the individual sugarcane block level using a remote sensing, time-series based approach. The north of Australia is known for its complex tidal system, where the highest astronomical tides (HATs) reach 12 m. This paper investigates the tidal behaviour in this region by developing spectral climatology for tide gauge and altimetry data. Power spectral density analysis is applied to detect the magnitude of ocean tides in 20 years of sea-level data from multimission satellite altimeters and tide gauges. The spectra of altimetry sea level anomaly (SLA) time series have their strongest peaks centred at approximately 2.11, 5.88, and 7.99 cycles per year (cpy), corresponding to the diurnal and semidiurnal tidal constituents K1, M2, and O1, respectively. Closer to the coastline, the spectra peak at high-frequency overtide and shallow-water constituents such as M4, MK4, and MK3. There have been many large, high-frequency spectral peaks near the coastline, indicating the difficulty of predicting tidal signals by coastal altimetry. Similar to altimetry observations, there are dominant semidiurnal and diurnal tidal peaks in tide gauge SLA time series accompanying a number of overtides. The semidiurnal and diurnal peaks are mostly higher on the northwest coast of Australia compared with the north and northeast coast. Spatio-temporal data fusion refers to the technique of combining high temporal resolution from coarse satellite images and high spatial resolution from fine satellite images. However, data availability remains a major limitation in algorithm development. Existing spatio-temporal data fusion algorithms require at least one known image pair between the fine and coarse resolution image. However, data which come from two different satellite platforms do not necessarily have an overlap in their overpass times, hence restricting the application of spatio-temporal data fusion. In this paper, a new algorithm named Hopfield Neural Network SPatio-tempOral daTa fusion model (HNN-SPOT) is developed by utilizing the optimization concept in the Hopfield neural network (HNN) for spatio-temporal image fusion. The algorithm derives a synthesized fine resolution image from a coarse spatial resolution satellite image (similar to downscaling), with the use of one fine resolution image taken on an arbitrary date and one coarse image taken on a predicted date. The HNN-SPOT particularly addresses the problem when the fine resolution and coarse resolution images are acquired from different satellite overpass times over the same geographic extent. Both simulated datasets and real datasets over Hong Kong and Australia have been used in the evaluation of HNN-SPOT. Results showed that HNN-SPOT was comparable with an existing fusion algorithm, the spatial and temporal adaptive reflectance fusion model (STARFM). HNN-SPOT assumes consistent spatial structure for the target area between the date of data acquisition and the prediction date. Therefore, it is more applicable to geographical areas with little or no land cover change. It is shown that HNN-SPOT can produce accurate fusion results with >90% of correlation coefficient over consistent land covers. For areas that have undergone land cover changes, HNN-SPOT can still produce a prediction about the outlines and the tone of the features, if they are large enough to be recorded in the coarse resolution image at the prediction date. HNN-SPOT provides a relatively new approach in spatio-temporal data fusion, and further improvements can be made by modifying or adding new goals and constraints in its HNN architecture. Owing to its lower demand for data prerequisites, HNN-SPOT is expected to increase the applicability of fine-scale applications in remote sensing, such as environmental modeling and monitoring. Over the horizon radars (OTHR) rely on the propagation of high frequency (HF) radio waves via the ionosphere to successfully achieve their designated missions. Backscatter sounders (BSS) are environmental over-the-horizon radars which may be used to assess the ionospheric propagation conditions. However, high power observed by a BSS may be due to either good ionospheric propagation, a high surface backscatter coefficient, or a combination of both. Hence, an understanding of the surface backscatter coefficients and their temporal variation is essential to fully understand the ionospheric propagation conditions. A database of surface backscatter coefficients over a decade was created using backscatter ionogram data from four backscatter sounders in Australia. The temporal variations in the backscatter coefficients were investigated and it was found that the land backscatter coefficients were relatively constant over time, while the sea backscatter coefficients showed significant seasonal variation. Coastal wetlands are restored to regenerate lost ecosystem services. Accurate and frequent representations of the distribution and area of coastal wetland communities are critical for evaluating restoration success. Typically, such data are acquired through laborious, intensive and expensive field surveys or traditional remote sensing methods that can be erroneous. Recent advances in remote sensing techniques such as high-resolution sensors (<2 m resolution), object-based image analysis and shallow learning classifiers provide promising alternatives but have rarely been applied in a restoration context. We measured the changes to wetland communities at a 200 ha restoring coastal wetland in eastern Australia, using remotely sensed Worldview-2 imagery, object-based image analysis and random forest classification. Our approach used structural rasters (digital elevation and canopy height models) and a multi-temporal technique to distinguish between spectrally similar land cover. The accuracy of our land cover maps was high, with overall accuracies ranging between 91 and 95%, and this supported early detection of increases in the area of key ecosystems, including mixed she-oak and paperbark (10 ha), mangroves (0.91 ha) and saltmarsh (4.31 ha), over a 5-year monitoring period. Our approach provides coastal managers with an accurate and frequent method for quantifying early responses of coastal wetlands to restoration, which is essential for informing adaptive management in the regeneration of ecosystem services. Narrabeen-Collaroy Beach, located on the Northern Beaches of Sydney along the Pacific coast of southeast Australia, is one of the longest continuously monitored beaches in the world. This paper provides an overview of the evolution and international scientific impact of this long-term beach monitoring program, from its humble beginnings over 40 years ago using the rod and tape measure Emery field survey method; to today, where the application of remote sensing data collection including drones, satellites and crowd-sourced smartphone images, are now core aspects of this continuing and much expanded monitoring effort. Commenced in 1976, surveying at this beach for the first 30 years focused on in-situ methods, whereby the growing database of monthly beach profile surveys informed the coastal science community about fundamental processes such as beach state evolution and the role of cross-shore and alongshore sediment transport in embayment morphodynamics. In the mid-2000s, continuous (hourly) video-based monitoring was the first application of routine remote sensing at the site, providing much greater spatial and temporal resolution over the traditional monthly surveys. This implementation of video as the first of a now rapidly expanding range of remote sensing tools and techniques also facilitated much wider access by the international research community to the continuing data collection program at Narrabeen-Collaroy. In the past decade the video-based data streams have formed the basis of deeper understanding into storm to multi-year response of the shoreline to changing wave conditions and also contributed to progress in the understanding of estuary entrance dynamics. More recently, 'opportunistic' remote sensing platforms such as surf cameras and smartphones have also been used for image-based shoreline data collection. Commencing in 2011, a significant new focus for the Narrabeen-Collaroy monitoring program shifted to include airborne lidar (and later Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs)), in an enhanced effort to quantify the morphological impacts of individual storm events, understand key drivers of erosion, and the placing of these observations within their broader regional context. A fixed continuous scanning lidar installed in 2014 again improved the spatial and temporal resolution of the remote-sensed data collection, providing new insight into swash dynamics and the often-overlooked processes of post-storm beach recovery. The use of satellite data that is now readily available to all coastal researchers via Google Earth Engine continues to expand the routine data collection program and provide key insight into multi-decadal shoreline variability. As new and expanding remote sensing technologies continue to emerge, a key lesson from the long-term monitoring at Narrabeen-Collaroy is the importance of a regular re-evaluation of what data is most needed to progress the science. Distinct absorption peaks, with maxima at around 328 nm and a shoulder at 360 nm, were observed in the UV region of the absorption spectra for both the particulate and dissolved fractions of water samples collected in Keppel Bay (NE Australia) during the presence of sporadic Trichodesmium colonies. The largest absorption coefficients for these peaks were observed in samples collected in the near-surface waters (top 2–3 cm). Values approximately 3.5–6 times greater for aCDOM(328) and 13–36 times greater for ap(328) were observed in the near-surface samples compared to those collected from the top 20 cm of the water column at the same sites. Similar UV-absorption peaks observed in other studies have been attributed to the presence of mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs). Increased UV absorption can affect both the magnitude of the absorption coefficients in the blue end of the visible region and the spectral slope of the exponential model commonly used to describe the CDOM absorption coefficient. This, in turn, can significantly affect the accuracy of satellite retrieved estimates of ocean colour products related to CDOM and particulate absorption coefficients. In tropical waters where Trichodesmium blooms are prevalent, regional ocean colour algorithms need to be developed using in situ bio-optical measurements from both the UV and visible regions of the spectra. Monitoring forest structural properties is critical for a range of applications because structure is key to understanding and quantifying forest biophysical functioning, including stand dynamics, evapotranspiration, habitat, and recovery from disturbances. Monitoring of forest structural properties at desirable frequencies and cost globally is enabled by space-borne LiDAR missions such as the global ecosystem dynamics investigation (GEDI) mission. This study assessed the accuracy of GEDI estimates for canopy height, total plant area index (PAI), and vertical profile of plant area volume density (PAVD) and elevation over a gradient of canopy height and terrain slope, compared to estimates derived from airborne laser scanning (ALS) across two forest age-classes in the Central Highlands region of south-eastern Australia. ALS was used as a reference dataset for validation of GEDI (Version 2) dataset. Canopy height and total PAI analyses were carried out at the landscape level to understand the influence of beam-type, height of the canopy, and terrain slope. An assessment of GEDI's terrain elevation accuracy was also carried out at the landscape level. The PAVD profile evaluation was carried out using footprints grouped into two forest age-classes, based on the areas of mountain ash (Eucalyptus regnans) forest burnt in the Central Highlands during the 1939 and 2009 wildfires. The results indicate that although GEDI is found to significantly under-estimate the total PAI and slightly over-estimate the canopy height, the GEDI estimates of canopy height and the vertical PAVD profile (above 25 m) show a good level of accuracy. Both beam-types had comparable accuracies, with increasing slope having a slightly detrimental effect on accuracy. The elevation accuracy of GEDI found the RMSE to be 10.58 m and bias to be 1.28 m, with an R2 of 1.00. Land cover mapping from satellite images has progressed from visual and statistical approaches to Random Forests (RFs) and, more recently, advanced image recognition techniques such as convolutional neural networks (CNNs). CNNs have a conceptual benefit over RFs in recognising spatial feature context, but potentially at the cost of reduced spatial detail. We tested the use of CNNs for improved land cover mapping based on Landsat data, compared with RFs, for a study area of approximately 500 km × 500 km in southeastern Australia. Landsat 8 geomedian composite surface reflectances were available for 2018. Label data were a simple nine-member land cover classification derived from reference land use mapping (Catchment Scale Land Use of Australia—CLUM), and further enhanced by using custom forest extent mapping (Forests of Australia). Experiments were undertaken testing U-Net CNN for segmentation of Landsat 8 geomedian imagery to determine the optimal combination of input Landsat 8 bands. The results were compared with those from a simple autoencoder as well as an RF model. Segmentation test results for the best performing U-Net CNN models produced an overall accuracy of 79% and weighted-mean F1 score of 77% (9 band input) or 76% (6 band input) for a simple nine-member land cover classification, compared with 73% and 68% (6 band input), respectively, for the best RF model. We conclude that U-Net CNN models can generate annual land cover maps with good accuracy from proxy training data, and can also be used for quality control or improvement of existing land cover products. The precise information on fuel characteristics is essential for wildfire modelling and management. Satellite remote sensing can provide accurate and timely measurements of fuel characteristics. However, current estimates of fuel load changes from optical remote sensing are obstructed by seasonal cloud cover that limits their continuous assessments. This study utilises remotely sensed Synthetic-Aperture Radar (SAR) (Sentinel-1 backscatter) data as an alternative to optical-based imaging (Sentinel-2 scaled surface reflectance). SAR can penetrate clouds and offers high-spatial and medium-temporal resolution datasets and can hence complement the optical dataset. Inspired by the optical-based Vegetation Structural Perpendicular Index (VSPI), an SAR-based index termed RADAR-VSPI (R-VSPI) is introduced in this study. R-VSPI characterises the spatio-temporal changes in fuel load due to wildfire and the subsequent vegetation recovery thereof. The R-VSPI utilises SAR backscatter (σ°) from the co-polarized (VV) and cross-polarized (VH) channels at a centre frequency of 5.4 GHz. The newly developed index is applied over major wildfire events that occurred during the "Black Summer" wildfire season (2019–2020) in southern Australia. The condition of the fuel load was mapped every 5 (any orbit) to 12 (same orbit) days at an aggregated spatial resolution of 110 m. The results show that R-VSPI was able to quantify fuel depletion by wildfire (relative to healthy vegetation) and monitor its subsequent post-fire recovery. The information on fuel condition and heterogeneity improved at high-resolution by adapting the VSPI on a dual-polarization SAR dataset (R-VSPI) compared to the historic forest fuel characterisation methods (that used visible and infrared bands only for fuel estimations). The R-VSPI thus provides a complementary source of information on fuel load changes in a forest landscape compared to the optical-based VSPI, in particular when optical observations are not available due to cloud cover.
