The eastern slope of Gongga Mountain is located in the mountainous region of Southwestern China, which has strong geologic tectonics that leads to frequent landslide hazards. A large number of such landslides were induced by the 2022 Luding Ms 6.8 earthquake. Therefore, it is necessary to identify the spatial distribution of landslides in the region. In this paper, the Google Earth platform and GF-1 and GF-6 satellite imagery were used to construct new pre-earthquake and co-seismic landslides. Then, we analyzed the relationship between the conditioning factors of the pre-earthquake and co-seismic landslide inventories and the spatial distribution of landslides, as well as the main controlling factors of landslide development. The main conclusions are as follows: (i) Through remote-sensing interpretation and field investigation, 1198 and 4284 landslides were recognized before and after the earthquake, respectively, and the scale was mainly small- and medium-sized. (ii) In two kinds of inventories, landslides are primarily distributed along the banks of the Dadu River basin, within elevations of 1200–1400 m and slopes of 30–50°. (iii) The distribution of pre-earthquake and co-seismic landslides was influenced by engineering geological layer combinations and earthquake intensity, with these two factors being the most significant. The Sentinel-1 imaging radar mission provides a short revisit-time, continuous all-weather, and day-and-night imagery at the C-band, which brings opportunities for the dynamic extraction of lake water areas. For wetland-type lakes, it is difficult to distinguish between the water, submerged plants, and mudflats at the edge of a lake, which leads to difficulty in recognizing the water edge of a lake and affects the accuracy of lake water area extraction. In this paper, a water area extraction and water level prediction algorithm based on Sentinel-1 dual-polarization data decomposition is proposed to solve the problem. We can accurately extract lake water through generalized Stokes polarization decomposition. At the same time, we can verify the accuracy of water area extraction by establishing the water area and in situ water level elevation (A–E) relationship, and predicting the water level according to the calculated water area. In this study, dual-polarization Sentinel-1 time series SAR data covering the Dongting Lake wetland from 2018 to 2022 are used to verify the proposed water area extraction algorithm and establish the A–E relationship of the East Dongting Lake basin. The results show that the generalized Stokes decomposition parameters are very sensitive to the water boundary, and the R2 of the water area and the water level can reach 0.98 by using the piecewise linear function. It confirms the accuracy of the water area inversion, which is of extremely important significance for the high-precision monitoring of the water area of Dongting Lake with long-term Sentinel-1 data. Meanwhile, the predicted lake water level acquired using the A–E relationship established in this paper is compared with the field water level, with an RMSE of 0.4857 m and R2 of 0.9930. This means that the water level derived using the method in this study is quite compatible with the field observations, which provides a good idea for the water level monitoring of lakes lacking hydrological monitoring stations. Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) technology has become an important means of flood monitoring because of its large coverage, repeated observation, and all-weather and all-time working capabilities. The commonly used thresholding and change detection methods in emergency monitoring can quickly and simply detect floods. However, these methods still have some problems: (1) thresholding methods are easily affected by low backscattering regions and speckle noise; (2) changes from multi-temporal information include urban renewal and seasonal variation, reducing the precision of flood monitoring. To solve these problems, this paper presents a new flood mapping framework that combines semi-automatic thresholding and change detection. First, multiple lines across land and water are drawn manually, and their local optimal thresholds are calculated automatically along these lines from two ends towards the middle. Using the average of these thresholds, the low backscattering regions are extracted to generate a preliminary inundation map. Then, the neighborhood-based change detection method combined with entropy thresholding is adopted to detect the changed areas. Finally, pixels in both the low backscattering regions and the changed regions are marked as inundated terrain. Two flood datasets, one from Sentinel-1 in the Wharfe and Ouse River basin and another from GF-3 in Chaohu are chosen to verify the effectiveness and practicality of the proposed method. The glacial lakes in the Southeastern Qinghai–Tibet Plateau (SEQTP) have undergone dramatic expansion in the context of global warming, leading to several glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) disasters. However, there is a gap and incompleteness in glacial lake inventories across this area due to the heavy cloud cover. In this study, an updated and comprehensive glacial lake inventory was produced by object-based image analysis (OBIA) and manual vectorization based on the Sentinel-1 SAR and Sentinel-2 MSI images acquired in 2022. Detailed steps regarding the OBIA were provided, and the feature set of Sentinel-1 SAR images suitable for extracting glacial lakes was also determined in this paper. We found that the mean combination of ascending-orbit and descending-orbit images is appropriate for mapping glacial lakes. VV-polarized backscattering coefficients from ascending-orbit achieved a better performance for delineating glacial lakes within the study area. Moreover, the distribution of glacial lakes was characterized in terms of four aspects: size, type, elevation, and space. There were 3731 glacial lakes with a total area of 1664.22 ± 0.06 km2 in the study area; most of them were less than 0.07 km2. Ice-contacted lakes were primarily located in the Palongzangbo basin (13.24 ± 0.08 km2). Nyang Qu basin had the most abundant glacial lake resources (2456 and 93.32 ± 0.18 km2). A comparison with previously published glacial lake datasets demonstrated that our dataset is more complete. This inventory is useful for evaluating water resources, studying glacier–glacial lake interactions, and assessing GLOFs' susceptibility in the SEQTP. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Accurate estimation of surface evapotranspiration (ET) in the Heihe River Basin using remote sensing data is crucial for understanding water dynamics in arid regions. In this paper, by coupling physical constraints and machine learning for hybrid modeling, we develop a hybrid model based on surface conductance optimization. A hybrid modeling algorithm, two physical process-based ET algorithms (Penman–Monteith-based and Priestley–Taylor-based ET algorithms), and three pure machine learning algorithms (Random Forest, Extreme Gradient Boosting, and K Nearest Neighbors) are comparatively analyzed for estimating the ET. The results showed that, in general, the machine learning model optimized by parameters was able to better predict the surface conductance of the hybrid model. Driver analyses showed that radiation, normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), and air temperature had high correlations with ET. The hybrid model had a better prediction performance for ET than the other five models, and it improved the R2 of the two physical process-based algorithms to 0.9, reduced the root mean square error (RMSE) to 0.5 mm/day, reduced the BIAS to 0.2 mm/day, and improved the Kling–Gupta efficiency (KGE) to 0.9. The hybrid model outperformed the others across different time scales, displaying lower BIAS, RMSE, and higher KGE. Spatially, its ET patterns aligned with regional vegetation changes, with superior accuracy in annual ET estimation compared to the other models. Comparison with other ET products shows that the estimation results based on the hybrid model have better performance. This approach not only improves the accuracy of ET estimation but also improves the understanding of the physical mechanism of ET estimation by pure machine learning models. The increasing incidence of retrogressive thaw slumps (RTSs) in permafrost regions underscores the need for detailed spatial and temporal analysis using InSAR technology to monitor and predict dynamic changes in the process of RTSs. Nevertheless, current InSAR deformation forecasting methods employing deep learning strategies such as the traditional long short-term memory (LSTM) and recent transformer models encounter difficulties in effectively capturing temporal features. Moreover, they are limited in their ability to directly integrate spatial information. In this paper, an innovative deep learning approach named Spacetimeformer is proposed for predicting medium- and short-term InSAR deformation of RTSs in the Chumar River area. This method employs a transformer architecture with a spatiotemporal attention mechanism, which enhances the long-term prediction capabilities of time series models and dynamic spatial modeling. It is applicable to multivariate InSAR spatiotemporal deformation prediction problems. The findings include a list of 72 RTSs compiled based on derived InSAR deformation maps and Sentinel-2 optical images, of which 64 have an average deformation rate exceeding 10 mm/year, indicating signs of permafrost degradation. The density distribution of the displacement maps predicted by the Spacetimeformer model aligned well with the InSAR deformation maps obtained from the small baseline subset (SBAS) method, with the overall prediction deviation controlled within 20 mm. In addition, the point-scale prediction results were compared with LSTM and transformer models. This study indicates that the Spacetimeformer network achieved good results in predicting the deformation of RTSs, with a root mean square error of 1.249 mm. The Spacetimeformer method for deformation prediction with the spacetime mechanism presented in this study can serve as a general framework for multivariate deformation prediction based on InSAR results. Accurate identification and segmentation of individual tree points are crucial for assessing forest spatial distribution, understanding tree growth and structure, and managing forest resources. Traditional methods based on Canopy Height Models (CHM) are simple yet prone to over- and/or under-segmentation. To deal with this problem, this paper introduces a novel approach that combines marker-controlled watershed segmentation with a spectral clustering algorithm. Initially, we determined the local maxima within a series of variable windows according to the lower bound of the prediction interval of the regression equation between tree crown radius and tree height to preliminarily segment individual trees. Subsequently, using this geometric shape analysis method, the under-segmented trees were identified. For these trees, vertical tree crown profile analysis was performed in multiple directions to detect potential treetops which were then considered as inputs for spectral clustering optimization. Our experiments across six plots showed that our method markedly surpasses traditional approaches, achieving an average Recall of 0.854, a Precision of 0.937, and an F1-score of 0.892. Comprehending the spatiotemporal dynamics and driving factors of small and micro wetlands (SMWs) holds paramount significance in their conservation and sustainable development. This paper investigated the spatiotemporal evolution and driving mechanisms of SMWs in the Yellow River Basin, utilizing buffer zones, overlay analysis, and the Geodetector model based on Landsat satellite images and an open-surface water body dataset from 1990 to 2020. The results revealed that (1) from 1990 to 2020, SMWs in the Yellow River Basin exhibited an overall pattern of fluctuation reduction. The total area decreased by approximately 1.12 × 105 hm2, with the predominant decline occurring in the 0–1 hm2 and 1–3 hm2 size categories. In terms of spatial distribution, SMWs in Qinghai and Gansu decreased significantly, while the SMWs in Inner Mongolia, Henan, and Shandong gradually increased. (2) From 1990 to 2020, SMWs were mostly converted into grassland and cropland, with some transformed into impervious water surface and barren, and only a small percentage converted into other land types in the Yellow River basin. (3) The alterations in SMWs were influenced by factors, with their interplay exhibiting nonlinear or bilinear enhancement. Among these factors, annual precipitation, elevation, and potential evapotranspiration were the primary natural factors influencing the changes in the distribution of SMWs. Landslide susceptibility evaluation (LSE) refers to the probability of landslide occurrence in a region under a specific geological environment and trigger conditions, which is crucial to preventing and controlling landslide risk. The mainstream of the Yangtze River in Yichang City belongs to the largest basin in the Three Gorges Reservoir area and is prone to landslides. Affected by global climate change, seismic activity, and accelerated urbanization, geological disasters such as landslide collapses and debris flows in the study area have increased significantly. Therefore, it is urgent to carry out the LSE in the Yichang section of the Yangtze River Basin. The main results are as follows: (1) Based on historical landslide catalog, geological data, geographic data, hydrological data, remote sensing data, and other multi-source spatial-temporal big data, we construct the LSE index system; (2) In this paper, unsupervised Deep Embedding Clustering (DEC) algorithm and deep integration network (Capsule Neural Network based on SENet: SE-CapNet) are used for the first time to participate in non-landslide sample selection, and LSE in the study area and the accuracy of the algorithm is 96.29; (3) Based on the constructed sensitivity model and rainfall forecast data, the main driving mechanisms of landslides in the Yangtze River Basin were revealed. In this paper, the study area's mid-long term LSE prediction and trend analysis are carried out. (4) The complete results show that the method has good performance and high precision, providing a reference for subsequent LSE, landslide susceptibility prediction (LSP), and change rule research, and providing a scientific basis for landslide disaster prevention. Flood events have caused huge disasters with regard to human life and economic development, especially short-term flood events that have occurred in recent years. Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) satellites can directly detect the spatiotemporal characteristics of terrestrial water storage anomalies (TWSA), which play an important role in capturing flood signals. However, the monthly resolution of GRACE-derived TWSA limits its application in monitoring sub-monthly flood events. Therefore, this paper first reconstructs the daily TWSA based on a statistical model with near real-time precipitation and temperature as input variables, and then three daily flood monitoring indexes are developed based on the reconstructed TWSA. Furthermore, these indexes are employed to evaluate the temporal and spatial characteristics of the 2016 short-term flood event in the Haihe River basin (HRB), including the flood potential index (FPI), water storage deficit index (WSDI), and combined climate deviation index (CCDI). In contrast to previous studies, the temporal resolution of TWSA-based indexes is improved from the monthly scale to the daily scale, which largely improves the temporal characterization of flood monitoring. Results demonstrate that (1) among ten kinds of "Temperature-Precipitation" combinations, the reconstructed TWSA based on CN05.1-CN05.1 match well with the GRACE TWSA, as well as publicly available daily TWSA datasets with a Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency coefficient (NSE) of 0.96 and 0.52 ~ 0.81 respectively. (2) The short-term flood characteristics can be better characterized by the reconstructed daily TWSA based on CN05.1-CN05.1, reaching the peak of 216.19 mm on July 20 in the flood center. Additionally, the spatial characteristics of the equivalent water height (EWH) are detected to evolve from southwest to northeast during the short-term flood. (3) FPI, WSDI, and CCDI are proven to be effective in monitoring flood events in the HRB, which validates the reliability of the reconstructed daily TWSA. Moreover, compared to the 56% and 66% coverage of damage quantified by FPI and CCDI, the 45% damage coverage of the flood mapped by WSDI is more consistent with the governmental reports within the HRB. Oblique photography technology based on UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) provides an effective means for the rapid, real-scene 3D reconstruction of geographical objects on a watershed scale. However, existing research cannot achieve the automatic and high-precision reconstruction of water regions due to the sensitivity of water surface patterns to wind and waves, reflections of objects on the shore, etc. To solve this problem, a novel rapid reconstruction scheme for water regions in 3D models of oblique photography is proposed in this paper. It extracts the boundaries of water regions firstly using a designed eight-neighborhood traversal algorithm, and then reconstructs the triangulated irregular network (TIN) of water regions. Afterwards, the corresponding texture images of water regions are intelligently selected and processed using a designed method based on coordinate matching, image stitching and clipping. Finally, the processed texture images are mapped to the obtained TIN, and the real information about water regions can be reconstructed, visualized and integrated into the original real-scene 3D environment. Experimental results have shown that the proposed scheme can rapidly and accurately reconstruct water regions in 3D models of oblique photography. The Tarim River Basin (TRB) is situated in the hinterland of northwest China, which is an extremely arid and fragile ecological zone. In recent years, the region's ecological civilization construction has been facing huge challenges that are exacerbated by climate change and human activities. In order to verify the current ecological status of TRB, this paper explores the spatial and temporal variation in ecosystem service value (ESV) and the impact mechanism based on LUCC data from 2000 to 2020, using the adjusted unit area value equivalent method, the elasticity index method and the geo-probe analysis method. The results show that: (1) the ESV of the TRB has fluctuated since 2000, increasing by CNY 14.02 billion, especially in the Hotan River region. Among the individual ecosystem services, the increase in regulatory services is the largest, rising to CNY 8.842 billion. The growth of ESV mostly occurred in the mountains and oases. (2) The rise in ESV is mainly due to the conversion of barren land to water and grassland; ESV loss is mainly affected by the conversion of water to cropland and barren land and grassland to cropland and barren land. (3) Human activity impact or intensity (HAI) is the key driving factor for the spatial stratified heterogeneity of ESV, followed by elevation (DEM). In the interaction analysis, HAI∩DEM interaction is the primary reason for ESV's spatial differentiation. The study's findings show that the combined effects of human activities, DEM, and hydrothermal conditions underlie the spatial stratified heterogeneity of ESV in the TRB. Seasonal snowpacks, characterized by their snow water equivalent (SWE), can play a major role in the hydrological cycle of montane environments with months of snow accretion followed by episodes of melt controlling flood risk and water resource availability downstream. Quantifying the temporal and spatial patterns of snowpack accumulation and its subsequent melt and runoff is an internationally significant challenge, particularly within mountainous regions featuring complex terrain with limited or absent observational data. Here we report a new approach to snowpack characterization using open-source global satellite and modelled data products (precipitation and SWE) greatly enhancing the utility of the widely used Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT). The paper focusses on the c. 23,000 km2 Chenab river basin (CRB) in the headwaters of the Indus Basin, globally important because of its large and growing population and increasing water insecurity due to climate change. We used five area-weighted averaged satellite, gridded and reanalysis precipitation datasets: ERA5-Land, CMORPH, TRMM, APHRODITE and CPC UPP. As well as comparison to local weather station data, these were used in SWAT to model streamflow for evaluation against observed streamflow at the basin outlet. ERA5-Land data provided the best streamflow match-ups and was used to infer snowpack (SWE) dynamics at basin and sub-basin scales. Snow reference data were derived from remote sensing and modelled SWE re-analysis products: ULCA-SWE and KRA-SWE, respectively. Beyond conventional auto-calibration and single-variable approaches we undertook multi-variable calibration using R-SWAT to manually adjust snow parameters alongside observed streamflow data. Characterization of basin-wide patterns of snowpack build-up and melt (SWE dynamics) were greatly strengthened using KRA-SWE data accompanied by improved streamflow simulation in sub-basins dominated by seasonal snow cover. UCLA-SWE data also improved SWE estimations using R-SWAT but weakened the performance of simulated streamflow due to under capture of seasonal runoff from permanent snow/ice fields in the CRB. This research highlights the utility and value of remote sensing and modelling data to drive better understanding of snowpack dynamics and their contribution to runoff in the absence of in situ snowpack data in high-altitude environments. An improved understanding of snow-bound water is vital in natural hazard risk assessment and in better managing worldwide water resources in the populous downstream regions of mountain-fed large rivers under threat from climate change. Landslides are common natural disasters that cause serious damage to ecosystems and human societies. To effectively prevent and mitigate these disasters, an accurate assessment of landslide hazards is necessary. However, most traditional landslide hazard assessment methods rely on static assessment factors while ignoring the dynamic changes in landslides, which may lead to false-positive errors in the assessment results. This paper presents a novel landslide hazard assessment method for the Zagunao River basin, China. In this study, an updated landslide inventory was obtained for the Zagunao River basin using data from interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) and optical images. Based on this inventory, a landslide susceptibility map was developed using a random forest algorithm. Finally, an evaluation matrix was created by combining the results of deformation rates from both ascending and descending data to establish a hazard level that considers surface deformation. The method presented in this study can reflect recent landslide hazards in the region and produce dynamic assessments of regional landslide hazards. Ponds constitute a pivotal component of aquatic ecosystems. The aquatic ecosystem of the Huai River Basin (HRB) in China was once damaged by severe pollution, and numerous ponds in the basin have not been secured. In this paper, Shenqiu County, a typical county in HRB with many ponds, is selected. Based on high-resolution images with ALOS in 2010, GF-2 in 2016, and GF-1 in 2022, we employed discriminant analysis (DA), classification and regression tree, support vector machine, and random forest to extract the ponds based on object-oriented and further analyzed the spatial-temporal variations of the ponds in this county. The results of the DA in these three years exhibited a higher kappa coefficient (>0.7), and overall accuracy (>75%), signifying superior performance when compared to the other three methods. There were 4625, 5315, and 4748 ponds in 2010, 2016, and 2022, with a total area of 12.87, 11.99, and 9.37 km2, respectively. The number of ponds had a trend of rising in the initial period (2010–2016) and falling later (2016–2022), while the total area revealed a continuous decline. Meanwhile, these ponds showed a clustering phenomenon with three main clustering areas, and the scope of the clustering areas also changed to a certain extent from 2010 to 2022. Our study offers valuable methodological support for the ecological monitoring and management of water environments in regions characterized by a dense concentration of ponds. Soil moisture (SM), as a crucial input variable of land surface processes, plays a pivotal role in the global hydrological cycle. The aim of this paper is to examine the spatiotemporal variability in SM in the Heihe River Basin using all-weather land surface temperature (LST) and reanalysis land surface data. Initially, we downscaled and generated daily 1 km all-weather SM data (2020) for the Heihe River Basin. Subsequently, we investigated the spatial and temporal patterns of SM using geostatistical and time stability methods. The driving forces of the monthly SM were studied using the optimal parameter-based geographical detector (OPGD) model. The results indicate that the monthly mean values of the downscaled SM data range from 0.115 to 0.146, with a consistently lower SM content and suitable temporal stability throughout the year. Geostatistical analysis revealed that months with a higher SM level exhibit larger random errors and higher variability. Driving analysis based on the factor detector demonstrated that in months with a lower SM level, the q values of each driving factor are relatively small, and the primary driving factors are land cover and elevation. Conversely, in months with a higher SM level, the q values for each driving factor are larger, and the primary driving factors are the normalized difference vegetation index and LST. Furthermore, interaction detector analysis suggested that the spatiotemporal variation in SM is not influenced by a single driving factor but is the result of the interaction among multiple driving factors, with most interactions enhancing the combined effect of two factors. The eastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau is one of the regions with the most severe landslide disasters on a global scale. With the intensification of seismic activity around the Tibetan Plateau and the increase in extreme rainfall events, the prevention of landslide disasters in the region is facing serious challenges. This article selects the Bailong River Basin located in this region as the research area, and the historical landslide data obtained from high-precision remote sensing image interpretation combined with field validation are used as the sample library. Using machine learning algorithms and data-driven landslide susceptibility assessment as the methods, 17 commonly used models and 17 important factors affecting the development of landslides are selected to carry out the susceptibility assessment. The results show that the BaggingClassifier model shows advantageous applicability in the region, and the landslide susceptibility distribution map of the Bailong River Basin was generated using this model. The results show that the road and population density are both high in very high and high susceptible areas, indicating that there is still a significant potential landslide risk in the basin. The quantitative evaluation of the main influencing factors emphasizes that distance to a road is the most important factor. However, due to the widespread utilization of ancient landslides by local residents for settlement and agricultural cultivation over hundreds of years, the vast majority of landslides are likely to have occurred prior to human settlement. Therefore, the importance of this factor may be overestimated, and the evaluation of the factors still needs to be dynamically examined in conjunction with the development history of the region. The five factors of NDVI, altitude, faults, average annual rainfall, and rivers have a secondary impact on landslide susceptibility. The research results have important significance for the susceptibility assessment of landslides in the complex environment of human–land interaction and for the construction of landslide disaster monitoring and early warning systems in the Bailong River Basin. Recent research has revealed that the dynamics of autumn phenology play a decisive role in the inter-annual changes in the carbon cycle. However, to date, the shifts in autumn phenology (EGS) and the elements that govern it have not garnered unanimous acknowledgment. This paper focuses on the Yellow River Basin (YRB) ecosystem and systematically analyzes the dynamic characteristics of EGS and its multiple controls across the entire region and biomes from 1982 to 2015 based on the long-term GIMMS NDVI3g dataset. The results demonstrated that a trend toward a significant delay in EGS (p < 0.05) was detected and this delay was consistently observed across all biomes. By using the geographical detector model, the association between EGS and several main driving factors was quantified. The spring phenology (SGS) had the largest explanatory power among the interannual variations of EGS across the YRB, followed by preseason temperature. For different vegetation types, SGS and preseason precipitation were the dominant driving factors for the EGS in woody plants and grasslands, respectively, whereas the explanatory power for each driving factor on cultivated land was very weak. Furthermore, the EGS was controlled by drought at different timescales and the dominant timescales were concentrated in 1–3 accumulated months. Grasslands were more significantly influenced by drought than woody plants at the biome level. These findings validate the significance of SGS on the EGS in the YRB as well as highlight that both drought and SGS should be considered in autumn fall phenology models for improving the prediction accuracy under future climate change scenarios. Satellite products have mediocre performance in precipitation estimation, while rain gauges are incapable of describing continuous spatial precipitation distributions. To obtain spatially continuous and accurate precipitation data, this paper proposes a two-step scheme incorporating environmental variables, satellite precipitation estimations, and rain gauge observations for the calibration of satellite precipitation data. First, the GPM data are downscaled from 0.1° to 0.01° based on the seasonal RF models to minimize the spatial differences between the satellite estimations and the rain gauge observations. Secondly, the fusion model combining ConvLSTM and CBAM explores the spatiotemporal correlation of downscaled satellite precipitation data with environmental co-variables and ground-based observations to correct GPM precipitation. The integrated scheme (CBAM-ConvLSTM) is applied to acquire monthly precipitation at a spatial resolution of 0.01° over Hanjiang River Basin from 2014 to 2018. Comparative analyses of model-based satellite products with in situ observations show that model-based precipitation products have a high-resolution spatial distribution along with high accuracy, which combines the advantages of in situ observations and satellite products. Compared to the original GPM product, the evaluation metric values of the merged precipitation products all improved: the RMSE decreased by 31% while the CC increased from 0.55 to 0.69, the bias decreased from about 25% to less than 1.8%, and the MAE decreased by 27.8% while the KGE increased from 0.28 to 0.52. The Qinghai–Tibet Plateau is the highest and largest permafrost area in the middle and low latitudes of China. In this region, permafrost thaw settlement is the main form of expressway subgrade disaster. Therefore, the quantitative analysis and regionalization study of permafrost thaw settlement deformation are of great significance for expressway construction and maintenance in the Qinghai–Tibet region. This paper establishes a thaw settlement prediction model using the thaw settlement coefficient and thaw depth. The thaw depth was predicted by the mean annual ground temperatures and active-layer thicknesses using the Radial Basis Function (RBF) neural network model, and the thaw settlement coefficient was determined according to the type of ice content. Further, the distribution characteristics of thaw settlement risk of the permafrost subgrade in the study region were mapped and analyzed. The results showed that the thaw settlement risk was able to be divided into four risk levels, namely significant risk, high risk, medium risk and low risk levels, with the areas of these four risk levels covering 3868.67 km2, 1594.21 km2, 2456.10 km2 and 558.78 km2, respectively, of the total study region. The significant risk level had the highest proportion among all the risk levels and was mainly distributed across the Chumar River Basin, Beiluhe River Basin and Gaerqu River Basin regions. Mediterranean temporary ponds are a priority habitat according to the Natura 2000 network of the European Union, and complete inventories of these ecosystems are therefore needed. Their small size, short hydroperiod, or severe disturbance make these ponds undetectable by most remote sensing systems. Here we show, for the first time, that the distributed hydrologic model IBER+ detects ephemeral and even extinct wetlands by fully exploiting the available digital elevation model and resolving many microtopographic features at drainage basin scales of about 1000 km2. This paper aims to implement a methodology for siting flood-prone areas that can potentially host a temporary wetland, validating the results with historical orthophotos and existing wetlands inventories. Our model succeeds in dryland endorheic catchments of the Upper Guadalquivir Basin: it has detected 89% of the previously catalogued wetlands and found four new unknown wetlands. In addition, we have found that 24% of the detected wetlands have disappeared because of global change. Subsequently, environmental managers could use the proposed methodology to locate wetlands quickly and cheaply. Finding wetlands would help monitor their conservation and restore them if needed. The response of the stream geomorphic index to fault activity is important for assessing the regional seismic hazard. The data used in this paper are 12 m resolution TanDEM-X data. The Fill tool in the Hydrology toolset in ArcGIS 10.5 was used to first process the digital elevation model (DEM), then analyse the flow direction of the DEM after filling and finally extract streams with catchment areas of more than 9 km2. Based on the DEM spatial analysis, the stream geomorphic index of the Lianfeng–Ningnan segment (LNS) of the Lianfeng fault was extracted, including the stream length gradient (SL) and the hypsometric integral (HI). This information, combined with the analysis of typical field geomorphology and terrace profiles, was used to define the fault activity period. To analyse the activity characteristics of the LNS, the LNS was divided into northern (Lianfeng to Jinyang), middle (Jinyang to Duiping town) and southern segments (Duiping town to Ningnan). The stream geomorphic index showed spatial variations, with mean SL and HI values of 384 and 0.45, respectively, in the northern segment; 175 and 0.41, respectively, in the middle segment; and 378 and 0.45, respectively, in the southern segment. These results indicate that the northern and southern segments of the LNS are more active than the middle segment, that there is little difference between the northern and southern segments, and that the activity of the middle segment is relatively weak. By comprehensively analysing the lithology, climate and tectonics in the LNS region, we conclude that tectonics are the main factor controlling the stream geomorphology in the LNS region. Based on this information and the analysis and dating of field geomorphology and terrace profiles, we found that the Lianfeng fault was active in the Holocene, which is consistent with the latest research results. This paper presents a new data fusion multiscale observation product (MOP) for flood emergencies. The MOP was created by integrating multiple sources of contributed open-source data with traditional spaceborne remote sensing imagery in order to provide a sequence of high spatial and temporal resolution flood inundation maps. The study focuses on the 2015 Memorial Day floods that caused up to USD 61 million dollars of damage. The Hydraulic Engineering Center River Analysis System (HEC-RAS) model was used to simulate water surfaces for the northern part of the Trinity River in Dallas, using reservoir surcharge releases and topographic data provided by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. A measure of fit assessment is performed on the MOP flood maps with the HEC-RAS simulated flood inundation output to quantify spatial differences. Estimating possible flood inundation using individual datasets that vary spatially and temporally allow to gain an understanding of how much each observational dataset contributes to the overall water estimation. Results show that water surfaces estimated by MOP are comparable with the simulated output for the duration of the flood event. As an essential data-driven model, machine learning can simulate runoff based on meteorological data at the watershed level. It has been widely used in the simulation of hydrological runoff. Considering the impact of snow cover on runoff in high-altitude mountainous areas, based on remote sensing data and atmospheric reanalysis data, in this paper we established a runoff simulation model with a random forest model and ANN (artificial neural network) model for the Xiying River Basin in the western Qilian region The verification of the measured data showed that the NSE (Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency), RMSE (root mean square error), and PBIAS (percent bias) values of the random forest model and ANN model were 0.701 and 0.748, 6.228 m3/s and 4.554 m3/s, and 4.903% and 8.329%, respectively. Considering the influence of ice and snow on runoff, the simulation accuracy of both the random forest model and ANN model was improved during the period of significant decreases in the annual snow and ice water equivalent in the Xiying River Basin from April to May, after the snow remote sensing data were introduced into the model. Specifically, for the random forest model, the NSE increased by 0.099, the RMSE decreased by 0.369 m3/s, and the PBIAS decreased by 1.689%. For the ANN model, the NSE increased by 0.207, the RMSE decreased by 0.700 m3/s, and the PBIAS decreased by 1.103%. In this study, based on remote sensing data and atmospheric reanalysis data, the random forest model and ANN model were used to effectively simulate hydrological runoff processes in high-altitude mountainous areas without observational data. In particular, the accuracy of the machine learning simulations of snowmelt runoff (especially during the snowmelt period) was effectively improved by introducing the snow remote sensing data, which can provide a methodological reference for the simulation and prediction of snowmelt runoff in alpine mountains. Social media texts spontaneously produced and uploaded by the public contain a wealth of disaster information. As a supplementary data source for remote sensing, they have played an important role in disaster reduction and emergency response in recent years. However, social media also has certain flaws, such as insufficient location information, etc. This affects the efficiency of combining these data with remote sensing data. For flood disasters in particular, extensively flooded areas limit the distribution of social media data, which makes it difficult for these data to function as they should. In this paper, we propose a disaster reduction framework to solve these problems. We first used an approach that was based on search engine and lexical rules to automatically extract disaster-related location information from social media texts. Then, we combined the extracted information with the upload location of social media itself to construct location-pointing relationships. These relationships were used to build a new social network, which can be used in combination with remote sensing images for disaster analysis. The analysis integrated the advantages of social media and remote sensing. It can not only provide macro disaster information in the study area but can also assist in evaluating the disaster situation in different flooded areas from the perspective of public observation. In addition, the timeliness of social media data also improved the continuity and situational awareness of flood monitoring. The transverse canyon is a V-shaped, fluvial-genetic canyon, a secondary valley formed by transverse drainage crossing a tectonically uplifted mountain. Paleotopography of the transverse canyon is vital to drainage connection and river capture, offering insight into the processes that link large-scale river systems, analyzing paleodrainage patterns, and recreating headward erosion. Notably, modern paleotopographic reconstruction methods are usually limited to reconstructions of paleotopography in vast sedimentary basins and denuded hills in orogenic belts. When applied to transverse canyons, a specific secondary valley found in tiny locations, these techniques are difficult, expensive, and ineffective. This paper proposes an automated method for reconstructing the paleotopography of the transverse canyon using the digital elevation model (DEM) and river. (1) Restore the ridgeline above the transverse canyon based on the ridgelines of the mountains on both sides; (2) create a buffer zone based on the river centerline with unequal buffer distances on each side; (3) construct a mesh surface by interpolating transition curves from the morphing method, using the three-edge type; (4) apply a spatial interpolation method to the elevation points on the mesh surface to construct the DEM above the transverse canyon and stitch it to the input DEM to obtain the paleotopographic DEM; (5) calculate the spatial attributes. The objective of this study is to reconstruct the paleotopography of eight typical transverse canyons in the comb-like fold belt of northern Chongqing. As part of the paleotopographic reconstruction of the transverse canyon, we address the effects of dislocated mountains, erosion gullies, and different morphing techniques, as well as the applicability of the proposed method to reconstructing other secondary valleys. In conclusion, we reconstruct paleotopographic DEMs of transverse canyons to replicate headward erosion processes, assess paleodrainage patterns, and build three-dimensional solid models. To protect and restore this downstream ecosystem, the Tarim River Basin Administration Bureau (TBAB) initiated the Ecological Water Compensation (EWC) project from 2000 to 2018. Revealing the mechanism of vegetation-hydroecological response processes in the lower reaches of the Tarim River before and after EWC work is conducive to water resource planning, utilization and protection. In this paper, the spatiotemporal responses of vegetation and groundwater to EWC were examined at the points, lines, and area (PLA) scale by coupling remote sensing techniques and field station observation data collected between 2000 and 2017. The findings indicated that (1) In general, the regional fractional vegetation coverage (FVC) increased significantly, and the average FVC growth rate was 3.5%/year from 2000 to 2017 (R2 > 0.84, p < 0.01, 2-tailed). (2) The regional vegetation restoration process showed obvious fluctuations and stage characteristics, but the spatial scope of the significantly increased vegetation area was limited. Plants grew rapidly within 10 km of the river, while 10 km away from the water channel, no obvious change was observed. (3) Strong coupling relationships were identified among the FVC growth, EWC volume and groundwater depth variations (p < 0.05, 2-tailed). The response times of the regional vegetation and groundwater depth to EWC indicated one-year lags. The above results imply that the regional ecological environment was significantly improved over the study period, thus confirming that the EWC project made remarkable accomplishments. However, the effect of ecological restoration is not sufficiently stable at present. Vegetation restoration has mainly been centralized around the river channel and is greatly dependent on the annual EWC volume. In addition, the local conditions begin to degrade soon after an EWC project is terminated, and vice versa; when EWC commences, the FVC immediately begins to improve. With the increasing number of reservoirs on the Nile River Basin, it has become important to understand the reservoir operations in the basin for coordinated water management among the various countries. With the lack of a proper framework for data sharing amongst the Nile basin countries, satellite remote sensing provides a simple transparent way to continuously monitor the changes taking place in reservoirs in all regions of the Nile River Basin. This paper presents a comparison between Sentinel-1- and Sentinel-2-derived reservoir water levels and the altimetry-based water level from G-REALM (Global Reservoirs and Lakes Monitor) for three major reservoirs downstream of the Millennium Reservoir impounded by the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) on the Nile River for the period of 2014–2021. Water surface extents were derived from Sentinel-1 using dynamic thresholds and from Sentinel-2 with the use of the NDWI (Normalized Difference Water Index). The water levels were estimated using a DEM-based contour matching technique. For Roseires Reservoir, the water levels from Sentinel agreed well with those from G-REALM (RMSE = 0.92 m; R2 = 0.82). For Lake Nasser, the water levels also agreed well (RMSE = 0.72 m; R2 = 0.85). For Lake Merowe, there was a significant mismatch in the derived water levels, mostly due to a lack of sufficient data from both sources. The parameters of hydrological models should be determined before applying those models to estimate or predict hydrological processes. The Xin'anjiang (XAJ) hydrological model is widely used throughout China. Since the prediction in ungauged basins (PUB) era, the regionalization of the XAJ model parameters has been a subject of intense focus; nevertheless, while many efforts have targeted parameters related to runoff yield using in-site data sets, classic regression has predominantly been applied. In this paper, we employed remotely sensed underlying surface data and a machine learning approach to establish models for estimating the runoff routing parameter, namely, CS, of the XAJ model. The study was conducted on 114 catchments from the Catchment Attributes and MEteorology for Large-sample Studies (CAMELS) data set, and the relationships between CS and various underlying surface characteristics were explored by a gradient-boosted regression tree (GBRT). The results showed that the drainage density, stream source density and area of the catchment were the three major factors with the most significant impact on CS. The best correlation coefficient (r), root mean square error (RMSE) and mean absolute error (MAE) between the GBRT-estimated and calibrated CS were 0.96, 0.06 and 0.04, respectively, verifying the good performance of GBRT in estimating CS. Although bias was noted between the GBRT-estimated and calibrated CS, runoff simulations using the GBRT-estimated CS could still achieve results comparable to those using the calibrated CS. Further validations based on two catchments in China confirmed the overall robustness and accuracy of simulating runoff processes using the GBRT-estimated CS. Our results confirm the following hypotheses: (1) with the help of large sample of catchments and associated remote sensing data, the ML-based approach can capture the nonstationary and nonlinear relationships between CS and the underlying surface characteristics and (2) CS estimated by ML from large samples has a robustness that can guarantee the overall performance of the XAJ mode. The accurate estimation of global evapotranspiration (ET) is essential to understanding the water cycle and land–atmosphere feedbacks in the Earth system. This study focused on the Inner Mongolia Reach of the Yellow River Basin, a typical arid and semi-arid region. Although there are many remote sensing ET datasets, many of the ET algorithms have not considered the impact of soil moisture, especially in water-limited areas. In this paper, the new PT-JPL model, which incorporates soil moisture into ET simulation, is used to improve the accuracy of ET simulation in water-limited areas. The simulation value is evaluated using two Hobq Desert eddy-covariance towers and the Penman–Monteith–Leuning version 2 (PML-V2) dataset. The new PT-JPL model shows the most significant improvements in water-limited regions; the coefficient of determination can reach 0.826, and the RMSE can reduce to 9.645 W/m2. Soil evaporation is central to the actual ET increase in the study area. Implementing ecological restoration projects reduced the exposed area of land in the study area and reduced the rate of total ET effectively. Furthermore, the most advanced machine learning local interpretation algorithm—the TreeExplainer-based Shapley additive explanation (SHAP) method—was used to identify the driving factors of ET capacity under different land use types. Temperature, NDVI, and root zone soil moisture were the main environmental factors causing ET changes in different plants. Meanwhile, temperature and root zone soil moisture had a noticeable coupling effect, except for grassland. Furthermore, a threshold effect of temperature to ET was found, and the value is 25, 30, and 30 °C in the forest, grassland, and cropland, respectively. This study provides an essential reference for accurately describing the ET characteristics of arid and semi-arid regions to achieve the efficient management of water resources. High Mountain Asia (HMA), with its high altitude, widely distributed snow and frozen soil, influences the climate of the northern hemisphere and even the world through thermal balance and the water vapor cycle and is also an indicator of global climate change. The influence of HMA snow cover on its surrounding areas has always been a research hotspot. Taking the Yangtze River Basin (YRB) of China as an example, this paper analyzes the relationship between winter snow depth in HMA and drought and flood in spring and summer in the YRB in the recent 40 years by using Singular Value Decomposition (SVD). The results show that the influence of snow cover on drought and flood in spring is inversely different between eastern and western parts of HMA, while the effect in summer is consistent. When the snow depth is larger (smaller) in the east and smaller (larger) in the west in winter, the YRB is drier (wetter) in spring. When the overall snow depth in HMA is larger (smaller) in winter, the northern part of the middle and lower reaches of the YRB is drier (wetter) in summer. The results provide support for understanding the impact of HMA snow cover on the surrounding climate and some important indicators for drought and flood prediction in the YRB. The Upper Yellow River is the most important area for water retention and flow production in the Yellow River basin, and the statuses of the ecosystems in this region are related to the ecological stability of the whole Yellow River basin. In this paper, the fractional vegetation cover (FVC), net primary productivity (NPP) of vegetation and water retention, soil retention, and windbreak and sand fixation services of the Upper Yellow River ecosystems were analysed from 2000 to 2019 with the trend analysis method. Ecological restoration degree evaluation indices were constructed to comprehensively assess the ecological restoration situation and restoration potential of the ecosystems in the Upper Yellow River region over the past 20 years and to quantitatively determine the contribution rates of climate factors and human activities to these ecosystem changes. The results showed that the settlement ecosystem area exhibited the greatest increase, while the grassland ecosystem area decreased significantly over the study period. In the Upper Yellow River region, the ecosystem quality and ecosystem services generally remained stable or improved. Areas with moderately, strongly and extremely improved ecological restoration degrees accounted for 32.9%, 21.0% and 2.8% of the entire Upper Yellow River region, respectively. Areas with strongly improved and extremely improved ecological restoration degrees were mainly distributed in the Loess Plateau gully areas and on the eastern Hetao Plain. The contribution rates of climatic factors and human activities to the NPP changes measured in the Upper Yellow River were 81.6% and 18.4%, respectively, while the contribution rates of these processes to soil erosion modulus changes were 77.6% and 22.4%, respectively. The restoration potential index of the FVC in the Upper Yellow River was 22.7%; that of the forest vegetation coverage was 14.4%; and that of the grassland vegetation coverage was 23.0%. Over the past 20 years, the ecosystems in the Upper Yellow River region have improved and recovered significantly. Satellite remote sensing precipitation products with high temporal–spatial resolution and large area coverage have great potential in hydrometeorological research. This paper analyzes the performance of four satellite products from 2000 to 2008 in the Yarlung Zangbo River Basin, namely the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM), Precipitation Estimation from Remotely Sensed Information using Artificial Neural Networks-Climate Data Record (PERSIANN), Climate Hazards Group InfraRed Precipitation with Station data (CHIRPS), and Climate Prediction Center morphing method (CMORPH). The four products are evaluated from three aspects: spatial distribution, temporal characteristics, and hydrological simulation. The results show that: (1) the four products exhibit similar annual and daily precipitation patterns, with the highest daily precipitation accuracy concentrated in the center, followed by the east and west; (2) TRMM, CHIRPS, and CMORPH exhibit the largest positive bias for monthly precipitation estimation in December, while PERSIANN shows the largest positive bias in July. All products overestimate the precipitation of 0.1–5 mm/d, and underestimate the precipitation above 5 mm/d, especially for PERSIANN; (3) certain Products tend to perform better than others at elevations of 3000–4000 m and in relatively humid zones. TRMM shows relatively stable performance for various elevation and climate zones; (4) for hydrological model validation, TRMM has the best performance during the calibration period, although it is inferior to CHIRPS during the validation period. Riparian zones are dynamic ecosystems that form at the interface between the aquatic and terrestrial components of a landscape. They are shaped by complex interactions between the biophysical components of river systems, including hydrology, geomorphology, and vegetation. Remote sensing technology is a powerful tool useful for understanding riparian form, function, and change over time, as it allows for the continuous collection of geospatial data over large areas. This paper provides an overview of studies published from 1991 to 2021 that have used remote sensing techniques to map and understand the processes that shape riparian habitats and their ecological functions. In total, 257 articles were reviewed and organised into six main categories (physical channel properties; morphology and vegetation or field survey; canopy detection; application of vegetation and water indices; riparian vegetation; and fauna habitat assessment). The majority of studies used aerial RGB imagery for river reaches up to 100 km in length and Landsat satellite imagery for river reaches from 100 to 1000 km in length. During the recent decade, UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) have been widely used for low-cost monitoring and mapping of riverine and riparian environments. However, the transfer of RS data to managers and stakeholders for systematic monitoring as a source of decision making for and successful management of riparian zones remains one of the main challenges. River ice on the Tibetan Plateau has important impacts on the ecosystem and hydrology. High-resolution Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) is an important tool for monitoring the thickness of river ice in high-altitude areas without ground data. However, due to the complex topography and narrow width, it remains challenging to monitor the ice thickness of high-order rivers (high-level branches in the plateau river system) on the Tibetan Plateau using SAR. Therefore, this paper focuses on inverting the ice thickness by utilizing dual-polarized C-band radar data. We select a typical watershed in the northeastern Tibetan Plateau, namely, the Babao River basin (including the Babao River and Binggou River), as the study area. The results show the following: (1) Dual-polarized C-band radar data have the potential to monitor the ice thickness of high-order rivers. The RMSEs of the Babao and Binggou Rivers are 0.109 m and 0.258 m, respectively. (2) Ascending and descending orbit radar images perform differently in retrieving the ice thicknesses of rivers with different directions. (3) The thickness of river ice affects the inversion accuracy. (4) Polarization parameters have varying explanatory capacities depending on the river characteristics. Digital elevation models (DEMs) are highly relevant geospatial products, and their positional accuracy has demonstrated influence on elevation derivatives (e.g., slope, aspect, curvature, etc.) and GIS results (e.g., drainage network and watershed delineation, etc.). The accuracy assessment of the DEMs is usually based on analyzing the altimetric component by means of positional accuracy assessment methods that are based on the use of a normal distribution for error modeling but, unfortunately, the observed distribution of the altimetric errors is not always normal. This paper proposes the application of a finite mixture model (FMM) to model altimetric errors. The way to adjust the FMM is provided. Moreover, the behavior under sampling is analyzed when applying different positional accuracy assessment standards such as National Map Accuracy Standards (NMAS), Engineering Map Accuracy Standard (EMAS) and National Standard for Spatial Data Accuracy (NSSDA) under the consideration of the FMM and the traditional approach-based one-single normal distribution model (1NDM). For the NMAS, the FMM performs statistically much better than the 1NDM when considering all the tolerance values and sample sizes. For the EMAS, the type I error level is around 3.5 times higher in the case of the 1NDM than in the case of the FMM. In the case of the NSSDA, as it has been applied in this research (simple comparison of values, not hypothesis testing), there is no great difference in behavior. The conclusions are clear; the FMM offers results that are always more consistent with the real distribution of errors, and with the supposed statistical behavior of the positional accuracy assessment standard when based on hypothesis testing. Land use/cover change has become an indispensable part of global eco-environmental change research. The Tarim River Basin is the largest inland river basin in China. It is also one of the most ecologically fragile areas in the country, with greening and desertification processes coexisting. This paper analyzes the evolution of land-use/cover change in the Tarim River Basin over the past 30 years based on remote sensing data. The research also explores the contribution of conversion between different land types to the ecological environment by selecting methods, such as transfer matrix and ecological contribution rate. Results indicate that grassland and barren land are the main land types in the region, accounting for 72.46% and 18.87% of the basin area, respectively. From 1990 to 2019, cropland area increased from 33,585.89 km2 to 52,436.40 km2, an increase of 56.13%, while barren land areas decreased from 781,380.57 km2 to 760,783.29 km2. Most of the land-use conversion was grassland to other land types and other land types to barren land. Since 1990, the conversion of barren land to grassland and cropland in the basin has led to ecological improvement, whereas the conversion of grassland to cropland has caused deterioration, but with a generally improving trend. It is anticipated that, over the next decade, changes in land types will involve increases in grassland and woodland area, decreases in barren land and cropland, and an overall improvement in the ecological environment in the watershed. Since agriculture and animal husbandry are the main industries in the Tarim River Basin and the land-use structure is dominated by cropland and grassland, several key measures should be implemented. These include improving land use, rationalizing the use of water and soil resources, slowing down the expansion of cropland, and alleviating the contradiction between humans and land, with the ultimate aim of achieving sustainable development of the social economy and ecological environment. Landslides, a major natural geohazard, obstruct municipal constructions and may destroy villages and towns, at worst causing significant casualties and economic losses. Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) technique offers distinct advantages on landslide detection and monitoring. In this paper, a more systematic workflow is designed for InSAR study of landslides, in terms of three levels: (i) early detection on regional scale, (ii) three-dimensional (3D) surface displacement rates estimation on detailed scale, and (iii) time series analysis on long-term temporal scale. The proposed workflow is applied for landslide research on the Xiaojiang River Basin, China, using ascending and descending Sentinel-1 images acquired from March 2017 to May 2019. First, the landslide inventory has been mapped and updated using InSAR stacking method, supporting geohazard prevention on a regional scale. A total of 22 active landslides are identified, ranging from medium to super large scale. Compared with the existing inventory, three unrecorded landslides are newly detected by our approach, and five recorded landslides are detected significant expansion of their boundaries. Then, specific to a detected landslide, Baobao landslide, a Total Least Squares–Kalman Filter-based approach is presented. Two outcomes are provided for further spatial-temporal pattern analysis: 3D displacement rates, providing an intuitive insight on the spatial characteristics and sliding direction of landslide, which are analyzed to deep the understanding of its kinematic mechanism, and long-term time series, which contribute to deduce the dynamic evolution of landslide, presenting benefits in landslide forecasting. Vegetation is a key indicator of the health of most terrestrial ecosystems and different types of vegetation exhibit different sensitivity to climate change. The Yarlung Zangbo River Basin (YZRB) is one of the highest basins in the world and has a wide variety of vegetation types because of its complex topographic and climatic conditions. In this paper, the sensitivity to climate change for different vegetation types, as reflected by the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), was assessed in the YZRB. Three machine learning models, including multiple linear regression, support vector machine, and random forest, were adopted to simulate the response of each vegetation type to climatic variables. We selected random forest, which showed the highest performance in both the calibration and validation periods, to assess the sensitivity of the NDVI to temperature and precipitation changes on an annual and monthly scale using hypothetical climatic scenarios. The results indicated there were positive responses of the NDVI to temperature and precipitation changes, and the NDVI was more sensitive to temperature than to precipitation on an annual scale. The NDVI was predicted to increase by 1.60–4.68% when the temperature increased by 1.5 °C, while it only changed by 0.06–0.24% when the precipitation increased by 10% in the YZRB. Monthly, the vegetation was more sensitive to temperature changes in spring and summer. Spatially, the vegetation was more sensitive to temperature increases in the upper and middle reaches, where the existing temperatures were cooler. The time-lag effects of climate were also analyzed in detail. For both temperature and precipitation, Needleleaf Forest and Broadleaf Forest had longer time lags than those of other vegetation types. Ecosystem services (ESs) are crucial for sustainable development, as they impact human well-being. However, changes in land use/land cover (LULC) caused by climate change and social development can negatively affect ESs, particularly in arid river basins. This study focuses on current and future changes in LULC in the Kaxghar River Basin (KRB) in Xinjiang, China, to determine how these changes will affect the region's ESs. The integrated PLUS-InVEST model was used to investigate the spatiotemporal distribution and changing patterns of habitat quality (HQ) and carbon storage (CS) under the natural increase scenario (NIS), economic development scenario (EDS), and water protection scenario (WPS). Additionally, the Ecosystem Service Contribution Index (ESCI) was also calculated to evaluate the contribution of LULC changes to ESs. The results show the following: (1) from 2000 to 2020, the average value of HQ in the KRB gradually decreased from 0.54 to 0.49 and CS trended slightly upward, with a total increase of 0.07 × 106 t. Furthermore, the changes in CS were highly consistent with changes in LULC. (2) From 2020 to 2030, the area of low-grade (0–0.2) HQ saw a continuous increase, with the fastest growth occurring in 2030 under the EDS. Meanwhile, under the WPS, HQ significantly improved, expanding by 1238 km2 in area. Total CS under the three test scenarios tended to decline, with the NIS showing the smallest decrease. (3) The expansion of cropland and unused land had a negative impact on ESs, particularly on CS, whereas the conversion to grassland and forestland had a significant positive impact. In conclusion, these insights will enrich our understanding of ESs in the study area and contribute to balancing the relationship between ecological conservation and socioeconomic development in the Kaxghar River Basin, as well as in other parts of China's arid Northwest and similar regions around the world. Soil erosion risk assessment enables the identification of areas requiring priority treatment and avoids wasting human and material resources. The factor scoring method used in existing studies has high subjectivity, and the method of expressing erosion risk according to the soil erosion intensity ignores the random nature of the occurrence of erosion; therefore, neither method accurately reflects the risk of soil erosion. In order to address this issue, this study proposes a soil erosion risk assessment method that integrates the outcome and the probability of occurrence of soil erosion by means of a probabilistic statistical model. Subsequently, experimental research is conducted in the Dali River Basin. On the basis of long time-series data, using mathematical statistics as a tool and drawing on the empirical frequency formula, the probabilistic statistical risk assessment model is combined with the Modified Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) model to account for the probability of regional soil erosion at different intensity levels in the long time-series, which is combined with the intensity of erosion to carry out soil erosion risk assessment. The results of our study show the following: (1) The central and southwestern regions of the Dali River Basin (DRB) present medium and high levels of soil erosion risk, with the proportion of low-risk areas increasing annually, accounting for 78.97% of the DRB in 2020, while extremely high-risk areas account for only 0.40% of the DRB. (2) The major components impacting soil erosion risk in the DRB, as revealed by the geodetector, are the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and slope, where the interaction between the two dominated the spatial variation in soil erosion risk. (3) Comparing the soil erosion risk and its status in the coming years, the proposed assessment method based on the occurrence probability can reveal the future soil erosion risk better than the traditional assessment method. Populus euphratica is a unique constructive tree species within riparian desert areas that is essential for maintaining oasis ecosystem stability. The Tarim River Basin contains the most densely distributed population of P. euphratica forests in the world, and obtaining accurate distribution data in the mainstream of the Tarim River would provide important support for its protection and restoration. We propose a new method for automatically extracting P. euphratica using Sentinel-1 and 2 and Landsat-8 images based on the Google Earth Engine cloud platform and the random forest algorithm. A mask of the potential distribution area of P. euphratica was created based on prior knowledge to save computational resources. The NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) time series was then reconstructed using the preferred filtering method to obtain phenological parameter features, and the random forest model was input by combining the phenological parameter, spectral index, textural, and backscattering features. An active learning method was employed to optimize the model and obtain the best model for extracting P. euphratica. Finally, the map of natural P. euphratica forests with a resolution of 10 m in the mainstream of the Tarim River was obtained. The overall accuracy, producer's accuracy, user's accuracy, kappa coefficient, and F1-score of the map were 0.96, 0.98, 0.95, 0.93, and 0.96, respectively. The comparison experiments showed that simultaneously adding backscattering and textural features improved the P. euphratica extraction accuracy, while textural features alone resulted in a poor extraction effect. The method developed in this study fully considered the prior and posteriori information and determined the feature set suitable for the P. euphratica identification task, which can be used to quickly obtain accurate large-area distribution data of P. euphratica. The glaciers in southeastern Tibet Plateau (SETP) influenced by oceanic climate are sensitive to global warming, and there remains a notable deficiency in accurate multitemporal change analyses of these glaciers. We conduct glacier inventories in the Yigong Zangbo River Basin (YZRB) in SETP for the years 1988, 2015, and 2023 utilizing Landsat and Sentinel-2 imagery, and analyze the glacier spatiotemporal variation incorporating the existing glacier inventory data. Since the 1970s until 2023, the glaciers significantly retreated at a rate of 0.76 ± 0.11%·a−1, with the area decreasing from 2583.09 ± 88.80 km2 to 1635.89 ± 71.74 km2, and the ice volume reducing from 221.7017 ± 7.9618 km3 to 152.7429 ± 6.1747 km3. The most significant retreat occurred in glaciers smaller than 1 km2. Additionally, glaciers on southern aspects retreated slower than the northern counterparts. The glaciers in the western YZRB witnessed a significantly greater shrinkage rate than those in the eastern section, with the most pronounced changes occurring in Aso Longbu River Basin. Furthermore, severe glacier mass deficits were observed from 2000 to 2019, averaging a loss rate of 0.57 ± 0.06 m w.e. a−1. The continuous rise in air temperature has primarily induced a general widespread glacier change in the YZRB. However, diverse topography led to spatial variability in glacier changes with discrepancies as large as several times. The features of individual glaciers, such as glacier size, debris cover, and the development of ice-contact glacial lakes enhanced the local complexity of glacier change and elusive response behaviors to climate warming led by the different topographic conditions. Agroecosystems are facing the adverse effects of climate change. This study explored how the ECOsystem Spaceborne Thermal Radiometer Experiment on Space Station (ECOSTRESS) can give new insight into irrigation allocation and plant health. Leveraging the global coverage and 70-m spatial resolution of the Evaporative Stress Index (ESI) from ECOSTRESS, we processed over 200 overpasses and examined patterns over 3 growing seasons across the Maipo River Basin of Central Chile, which faces exacerbated water stress. We found that ECOSTRESS ESI varies substantially based on the overpass time, with ESI values being systematically higher in the morning and lower in the afternoon. We also compared variations in ESI against spatial patterns in the environment. To that end, we analyzed the vegetation greenness sensed from Landsat 8 and compiled the referential irrigation allocation from Chilean water regulators. Consistently, we found stronger correlations between these variables and ESI in the morning time (than in the afternoon). Based on our findings, we discussed new insights and potential applications of ECOSTRESS ESI in support of improved agricultural monitoring and sustainable water management. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Investigating the spatiotemporal dynamics of vegetation net primary productivity (NPP) and its influencing factors are crucial for green and low-carbon development and facilitate human well-being in the Yellow River Basin (YRB). Although the research on NPP has advanced rapidly, in view of the regional particularity of the YRB, the persistence of its NPP change trend needs to be further discussed and more comprehensive impact factors need to be included in the analysis. Meanwhile, the spatial non-stationarity and scale effects of the impact on NPP when multiple factors are involved remain uncertain. Here, we selected a total of twelve natural and anthropogenic factors and used multi-scale geographically weighted regression (MGWR) to disentangle the spatial non-stationary relationship between vegetation NPP and related factors and identify the impact scale difference in the YRB. Additionally, we analyze the spatiotemporal variation trend and persistence of NPP during 2000–2020. The results revealed the following: (1) The annual NPP showed a fluctuating increasing trend, and the vegetation NPP in most regions will exhibit a future trend of increasing to decreasing. (2) The effects of different factors show significant spatial non-stationarity. Among them, the intensity of the impact of most natural factors shows a clear strip-shaped distribution in the east-west direction. It is closely related to the spatial distribution characteristics of natural factors in the YRB. In contrast, the regularity of anthropogenic influences is less obvious. (3) The impact scales of different factors on vegetation NPP were significantly different, and this scale changed with time. The factors with small impact scales could better explain the change in vegetation NPP. Interestingly, the impact size and scale of relative humidity on NPP in the YRB are both larger. This may be due to the arid and semi-arid characteristics of the YRB. Persistent droughts pose a threat to agricultural production, and the changing environment worsens the risk of drought exposure. Understanding the propagation of drought in changing environments and assessing possible impact factors can help in the early detection of drought, guiding agricultural production practices. The current study cannot reflect the propagation status of drought to the total terrestrial hydrological drought, so this work creatively investigated the atmospheric to hydrological drought propagation time in the Yangtze River Basin under the dynamic and static perspectives based on the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index and the Terrestrial Water Storage Anomalous Drought Index, fine-tuned the time scale to the seasonal scale, and explored the contributing capacity of the variable interactions. The results show that: (1) under the dynamic perspective, while the propagation time is decreasing in the annual scale, the spring season shows the opposite trend; and (2) large variability exists in the timing of drought propagation at spatial scales, with elevation playing the most important influential role, and bivariate interactions contributing stronger explanations compared to single variables. This study highlights the importance of considering the impact of variable interactions and contributes to our understanding of the response of secondary droughts to upper-level droughts, providing valuable insights into the propagation of droughts to total terrestrial hydrologic drought. With global climate change and irrational human activities, regional water resource conflicts are becoming more and more pronounced. The availability of water resource in watersheds can be indicated by the water yield. Exploring the factors that influence the water yield is crucial in responding to climate change and protecting water resource. Previous research on the factors influencing the water yield has frequently adopted a macro-level perspective, which has failed to reflect the influencing mechanisms of changes at the local scale adequately. Therefore, this study proposes a novel framework for integrally evaluating the impacts of climate change and human activities on water yield services from both local and global perspectives. Taking Ganzhou City, the source of the Ganjiang River, as an example, the results show the following: (1) Ganzhou City had the largest water yield of 1307.29 mm in 2016, and the lowest was only 375.32 mm in 2011. The spatial distribution pattern was mainly affected by the surface environment, and the high-value water yield regions in the study area were predominantly located in urban areas with flat terrain. (2) At the local scale, regions where human activities contribute more than 80% accounted for 25% of the area. In comparison, the impact of climate change accounted for 0.95%. The contribution rate of human activities to the water yield in Ganzhou City was significantly greater than that of climate change. (3) At the global scale, the simulation results of four scenarios show that climate change contributed (>98%) to the water yield, which is significantly higher than human activities (<2%). This study puts forward pioneering views on the research of water yield driving forces and provides a valuable theoretical basis for water resource protection and ecological environment construction. High-resolution and accurate precipitation data are essential for hydrological, meteorological, and ecological research at the watershed scale. However, in regions with complex terrain and significant rainfall variability, the limited number of rain gauge stations (RGS) is insufficient, and the spatial resolution of existing satellite precipitation data is too low to capture detailed precipitation patterns at the watershed scale. To address this issue, the downscaling of satellite precipitation products has become an effective method to obtain high-resolution precipitation data. This study proposes a monthly downscaling method based on a random forest model, aiming to improve the resolution of precipitation data in cloudy and rainy regions at mid-to-low latitudes. We combined the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform with a local Python environment, introducing cloud cover characteristics into traditional downscaling variables (latitude, longitude, topography, and vegetation index). The TRMM data were downscaled from 25 km to 1 km, generating high-resolution monthly precipitation data for the Dongting Lake Basin from 2001 to 2019. Furthermore, we analyzed the spatiotemporal variation characteristics of precipitation in the study area. The results show the following: (1) In cloudy and rainy regions, our method improves resolution and detail while maintaining the accuracy of precipitation data; (2) The response of monthly precipitation to environmental variables varies, with cloud cover characteristics contributing more to the downscaling model than vegetation characteristics, helping to overcome the lag effect of vegetation characteristics; and (3) Over the past 20 years, there have been significant seasonal trends in precipitation changes in the study area, with a decreasing trend in winter and spring (January–May) and an increasing trend in summer and autumn (June–December). In 2022, a severe drought and heatwave occurred in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River Basin. Previous studies have highlighted the severity of this event, yet the relevance of soil moisture (SM), as well as vapor pressure deficit (VPD) and vegetation damage, remained unclear. Here, we utilized solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) and various flux data to monitor the impact of drought on vegetation and analyze the influence of different environmental factors. The results indicated a severe situation of drought and heatwave in the Yangtze River Basin in 2022 that significantly affected vegetation growth and the ecosystem carbon balance. SIF and NDVI have respective advantages in reflecting damage to vegetation under drought and heatwave conditions; SIF is more capable of capturing the weakening of vegetation photosynthesis, while NDVI can more rapidly indicate vegetation damage. Additionally, the correlation of SM and SIF are comparable to that of VPD and SIF. By contrast, the differentiation in the severity of vegetation damage among different types of vegetation is evident; cropland is more vulnerable compared to forest ecosystems and is more severely affected by drought and heatwave.
