The increasing global warming trend has resulted in the mass loss of most glaciers. The Urumqi Vally, located in the dry and cold zone of China, and its widely dispersed glaciers are significant to the regional ecological environment, oasis economic development, and industrial and agricultural production. This is representative of glaciers in Middle Asia and represents one of the world's longest observed time series of glaciers, beginning in 1959. The Urumqi Headwater Glacier No. 1 (UHG-1) has a dominant presence in the World Glacier Monitoring Service (WGMS). This paper supplies a comprehensive analysis of past studies and future modeling of glacier changes in the Urumqi Valley. It has received insufficient attention in the past, and the mass balance of UHG-1 was used to verify that the geodetic results and the OGGM model simulation results are convincing. The main conclusions are: The area of 48.68 ± 4.59 km2 delineated by 150 glaciers in 1958 decreased to 21.61 ± 0.27 km2 delineated by 108 glaciers in 2022, with a reduction of 0.47 ± 0.04 km2·a−1 (0.96% a−1 in 1958–2022). The glacier mass balance by geodesy is −0.69 ± 0.11 m w.e.a−1 in 2000–2022, which is just deviating from the measured result (−0.66 m w.e.a−1), but the geodetic result in this paper can be enough to reflect the glacier changes (−0.65 ± 0.11 m w.e.a−1) of the URB in 2000–2022. The future loss rate of area and volume will undergo a rapid and then decelerating process, with the fastest and slowest inflection points occurring around 2035 and 2070, respectively. High temperatures and large precipitation in summer accelerate glacier loss, and the corresponding lag period of glacier change to climate is about 2–3 years. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper assesses trending AI foundation models, especially emerging computer vision foundation models and their performance in natural landscape feature segmentation. While the term foundation model has quickly garnered interest from the geospatial domain, its definition remains vague. Hence, this paper will first introduce AI foundation models and their defining characteristics. Built upon the tremendous success achieved by Large Language Models (LLMs) as the foundation models for language tasks, this paper discusses the challenges of building foundation models for geospatial artificial intelligence (GeoAI) vision tasks. To evaluate the performance of large AI vision models, especially Meta's Segment Anything Model (SAM), we implemented different instance segmentation pipelines that minimize the changes to SAM to leverage its power as a foundation model. A series of prompt strategies were developed to test SAM's performance regarding its theoretical upper bound of predictive accuracy, zero-shot performance, and domain adaptability through fine-tuning. The analysis used two permafrost feature datasets, ice-wedge polygons and retrogressive thaw slumps because (1) these landform features are more challenging to segment than man-made features due to their complicated formation mechanisms, diverse forms, and vague boundaries; (2) their presence and changes are important indicators for Arctic warming and climate change. The results show that although promising, SAM still has room for improvement to support AI-augmented terrain mapping. The spatial and domain generalizability of this finding is further validated using a more general dataset EuroCrops for agricultural field mapping. In light of recently accelerating global warming, the changes in vegetation trends are vital for the monitoring of the dynamics of both whole ecosystems and individual species. Detecting changes within the time series of specific forest ecosystems or species is very important in the context of assessing their vulnerability to climate change and other negative phenomena. Hence, the aim of this paper was to identify the trend change points and periods of greening and browning in multi-annual time series of the normalised difference vegetation index (NDVI) and enhanced vegetation index (EVI) of four main forest-forming tree species in the temperate zone: pine, spruce, oak and beech. The research was conducted over the last two decades (2002–2022), and was based on vegetation indices data derived from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS). To this end, several research approaches, including calculating the linear trends in the moving periods and BEAST algorithm, were adapted. A pattern of browning then greening then constant was detected for coniferous species, mostly pine. In turn, for broadleaved species, namely oak and beech, a pattern of greening then constant was identified, without the initial phase of browning. The glacial lakes in the Southeastern Qinghai–Tibet Plateau (SEQTP) have undergone dramatic expansion in the context of global warming, leading to several glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) disasters. However, there is a gap and incompleteness in glacial lake inventories across this area due to the heavy cloud cover. In this study, an updated and comprehensive glacial lake inventory was produced by object-based image analysis (OBIA) and manual vectorization based on the Sentinel-1 SAR and Sentinel-2 MSI images acquired in 2022. Detailed steps regarding the OBIA were provided, and the feature set of Sentinel-1 SAR images suitable for extracting glacial lakes was also determined in this paper. We found that the mean combination of ascending-orbit and descending-orbit images is appropriate for mapping glacial lakes. VV-polarized backscattering coefficients from ascending-orbit achieved a better performance for delineating glacial lakes within the study area. Moreover, the distribution of glacial lakes was characterized in terms of four aspects: size, type, elevation, and space. There were 3731 glacial lakes with a total area of 1664.22 ± 0.06 km2 in the study area; most of them were less than 0.07 km2. Ice-contacted lakes were primarily located in the Palongzangbo basin (13.24 ± 0.08 km2). Nyang Qu basin had the most abundant glacial lake resources (2456 and 93.32 ± 0.18 km2). A comparison with previously published glacial lake datasets demonstrated that our dataset is more complete. This inventory is useful for evaluating water resources, studying glacier–glacial lake interactions, and assessing GLOFs' susceptibility in the SEQTP. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Freeze–thaw (FT) erosion intensity may exhibit a future increasing trend with climate warming, humidification, and permafrost degradation in the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau (QTP). The present study provides a reference for the prevention and control of FT erosion in the QTP, as well as for the protection and restoration of the regional ecological environment. FT erosion is the third major type of soil erosion after water and wind erosion. Although FT erosion is one of the major soil erosion types in cold regions, it has been studied relatively little in the past because of the complexity of several influencing factors and the involvement of shallow surface layers at certain depths. The QTP is an important ecological barrier area in China. However, this area is characterized by harsh climatic and fragile environmental conditions, as well as by frequent FT erosion events, making it necessary to conduct research on FT erosion. In this paper, a total of 11 meteorological, vegetation, topographic, geomorphological, and geological factors were selected and assigned analytic hierarchy process (AHP)-based weights to evaluate the FT erosion intensity in the QTP using a comprehensive evaluation index method. In addition, the single effects of the selected influencing factors on the FT erosion intensity were further evaluated in this study. According to the obtained results, the total FT erosion area covered 1.61 × 106 km2, accounting for 61.33% of the total area of the QTP. The moderate and strong FT erosion intensity classes covered 6.19 × 105 km2, accounting for 38.37% of the total FT erosion area in the QTP. The results revealed substantial variations in the spatial distribution of the FT erosion intensity in the QTP. Landslide geological disasters, occurring globally, often result in significant loss of life and extensive economic damage. In recent years, the severity of these disasters has increased, likely due to the frequent occurrence of extreme rainstorms associated with global warming. This escalating trend emphasizes the urgent need for a simple and efficient method to identify hidden dangers related to landslide geological disasters. Areas experiencing seasonal heavy rainfall are particularly susceptible to such disasters, posing a serious threat to the lives and property of local residents. In response to the challenging characteristics of landslide geological hazards, such as their strong concealment and the high vegetation coverage in the Liupan Mountain area of the Loess Plateau, this study focuses on the integrated remote sensing identification and research of hidden landslide dangers in Longde County. The methodology combines differential interferometric synthetic aperture radar technology (D-InSAR) and high-resolution optical remote sensing. Surface deformation information of Longde County was obtained by analyzing 85 Sentinel-1A data from 2019 to mid-2020 using Stacking-InSAR, in conjunction with high-resolution optical remote sensing image data from GF-2 in 2019. Furthermore, the study conducted integrated remote sensing identification and field verification of landslide hazards throughout the entire county. This involved interpreting the shape and deformation marks of landslide hazards, identifying the disaster-bearing bodies, and expertly interpreting the environmental factors contributing to the hazards. As a result, 47 suspected landslide hazards and 21 field investigation points were identified, with 16 hazards verified with an accuracy of 76.19%. This outcome directly confirms the applicability and accuracy of the integrated remote sensing identification technology in the study area. The research results presented in this paper provide an effective scientific and theoretical basis for the monitoring and treatment of landslide geological disasters in the future stages. Carbon dioxide (CO2) is a known greenhouse gas and one of the largest contributors to global warming in the Earth's atmosphere. The remote detection and measurement of CO2 from industrial emissions are not routinely carried out and are typically calculated from the fuel combusted or measured directly within ducted vents. However, these methods are not applicable for the quantification of fugitive emissions of CO2. This work presents the results of remote measurement of CO2 emissions using the differential absorption lidar (DIAL) technique at a wavelength of ~2 µm. The results from the DIAL measurements compare well with simultaneous in-stack measurements, these datasets were plotted against each other and can be described by a linear regression of y (t/h) = 1.04 x − 0.02, suggesting any bias in the DIAL data is likely small. Moreover, using the definition outlined in EN 15267-3 a lower detection limit of 0.12 t/h was estimated for the 2 µm wavelength DIAL data, this is three orders of magnitude lower than the corresponding CO2 detection limit measured by NPL in the 1.5 µm wavelength region. Thus, this paper demonstrates the feasibility of high-resolution, ground-based DIAL measurements for quantifying industrial CO2 emissions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Surface albedo plays a controlling role in the surface energy budget, and albedo-induced radiative forcing has a significant impact on climate and environmental change (e.g., global warming, snow and ice melt, soil and vegetation degradation, and urban heat islands (UHIs)). Several existing review papers have summarized the algorithms and products of surface albedo as well as climate feedback at certain surfaces, while an overall understanding of various land types remains insufficient, especially with increasing studies on albedo management methods regarding mitigating global warming in recent years. In this paper, we present a comprehensive literature review on the variance pattern of surface albedo, the subsequent climate impact, and albedo management strategies. The results show that using the more specific term "surface albedo" is recommended instead of "albedo" to avoid confusion with similar terms (e.g., planetary albedo), and spatiotemporal changes in surface albedo can indicate subtle changes in the energy budget, land cover, and even the specific surface structure. In addition, the close relationships between surface albedo change and climate feedback emphasize the important role of albedo in climate simulation and forecasting, and many albedo management strategies (e.g., the use of retroreflective materials (RRMs)) have been demonstrated to be effective for climate mitigation by offsetting CO2 emissions. In future work, climate effects and management strategies regarding surface albedo at a multitude of spatiotemporal resolutions need to be systematically evaluated to promote its application in climate mitigation, where a life cycle assessment (LCA) method considering both climate benefits and side effects (e.g., thermal comfort) should be followed. The rapidly warming climate on the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau (QTP) leads to permafrost degradation, and the thawing of ice-rich permafrost induces land subsidence to facilitate the development of thermokarst lakes. Thermokarst lakes exacerbate the instability of permafrost, which significantly alters regional geomorphology and hydrology, affecting biogeochemical cycles. However, the spatial distribution and future changes in thermokarst lakes have rarely been assessed at large scales. In this study, we combined various conditioning factors and an inventory of thermokarst lakes to assess the spatial distribution of susceptibility maps using machine-learning algorithms. The results showed that the extremely randomized trees (EXT) performed the best in the susceptibility modeling process, followed by random forest (RF) and logistic regression (LR). According to the assessment based on EXT, the high- and very high-susceptibility area of the present (2000–2016) susceptibility map was 196,222 km2, covering 19.67% of the permafrost region of the QTP. In the future (the 2070s), the area of the susceptibility map was predicted to shrink significantly under various representative concentration pathway scenarios (RCPs). The susceptibility map area would be reduced to 37.06% of the present area in RCP 8.5. This paper also performed correlation and importance analysis on the conditioning factors and thermokarst lakes, which indicated that thermokarst lakes tended to form in areas with flat topography and high soil moisture. The uncertainty of the susceptibility map was further assessed by the coefficient of variation (CV). Our results demonstrate a way to study the spatial distribution of thermokarst lakes at the QTP scale and provide a scientific basis for understanding thermokarst processes in response to climate change. The ecological environment of the remote plateaus has been a challenge plaguing many countries due to global warming, increased human activities, and frequent occurrence of various heavy metal (HM) pollutants. This paper analyzes the primary factors and potential susceptible regions' characteristics related to soil HMs (As, Cd, Pb, Cr, Ni, and Zn) in the southern Tibet Plateau (TP) using Geo-detectors and a set of multi-source data from remote sensing and geographic and geological information. The geoaccumulation index showed that the As pollution was the most serious. The precipitation, pH, geological age (GA), and rock type (RT) were the most critical factors affecting HMs. Additionally, soil HMs were relatively unaffected by land use and clay. Based on the risk detector, the most key impact types (range) of the predominant factors of HM's sources were identified. For example, precipitation (100–200 mm), pH (7–7.5), DEM (>5500 m), RT (ophiolite), and GA (Ordovician) had the highest average concentration of As in each type (ranges) of the predominant factors. This work provides new data on the extent of soil HM contamination in the southern TP and predicts vulnerable areas of HM contamination, providing an important scientific basis for monitoring and managing HM in remote areas at high altitudes. Recent global warming has led to increased coastal disturbances through a significant transfer of heat between the land and the ocean surface. The polar regions show excessive temperature changes resulting in massive ice sheet melting. Mid-latitudinal storms pull heat away from the equator towards the poles; therefore, the global sea level is rising, making coastal cities the most vulnerable. In last few decades, rapid urbanization in big cities has drastically changed the land cover and land use due to deforestation, which has led to increased land surface temperatures (LSTs). This eventually leads to urban flooding due to oceanic storm surges frequently created by low pressure over the ocean during summer. This paper considered factors such as drastic unplanned urbanization to analyze coastal cities as the focal point of the generation of heat yielding the annihilation of the natural topography. Urban heat pockets (UHP) were studied for nine megacities, which were selected at an interval of 5° of latitudinal difference in the northern hemisphere (NH) since 70% of densely populated megacities are located in coastal regions. A comparative surface temperature analysis was effectively carried out with the same latitudinal reference for nine mid-sized cities using the derived LST data from Landsat 8. The results provide a comparative classification of surface temperature variations across the coastal cities over the NH. This study infers that the issues pertaining to growing urbanization are very important for analyzing the proportional impact caused by the settlement hierarchy and lays a robust foundation for advanced studies of global warming in coastal urban environments. With global warming, supraglacial lakes play an important role in ice sheet stability and climate change. They are not only the main factors affecting mass balance and sea-level rise but also the key units of surface runoff storage and mass loss. To automatically map the spatiotemporal distribution of supraglacial lakes in Greenland, this paper proposes an attention-based U-Net model with Sentinel-1 SAR imagery. The extraction results show that compared with the traditional network, this method obtains a higher validation coefficient, with an F1 score of 0.971, and it is spatiotemporally transferable, able to realize the extraction of supraglacial lakes in complex areas without ignoring small lakes. In addition, we conducted a case study in the Jakobshavn region and found that the supraglacial lake area peaked in advance between spring and summer due to extreme melting events from 2017 to 2021. Global sea level rise is both a major indicator and consequence of global warming. At present, global warming is causing sea level rise in two main ways: one is the thermal expansion of sea water, and the other is the injection of large amounts of fresh water into the ocean after glaciers and ice sheets melt. In this paper, satellite altimeter data are used to study the total changes of global sea level from 2002 to 2020. Different from most previous studies, this study proposes a calculation method of sea level anomaly using only the along track altimetry data, which is similar to considering the satellite points as tide gauges, in order to avoid the error caused by interpolation in the map data. In addition, GRACE satellite data are used to calculate the changes of global sea level caused by water increase; temperature and salinity data are used to calculate the changes from ocean thermal expansion. Next, using satellite altimetry data, the calculation results show that the global sea level rise rate in the period of 2002–2020 is 3.3 mm/a. During this period, the sea level change caused by the increase of sea water calculated with GRACE satellite data is 2.07 mm/a, and that caused by the thermal expansion of seawater is 0.62 mm/a. Compound droughts and heatwaves (CDHWs) are likely to cause more severe natural disasters than a single extreme event, and they have been exacerbated by rapid global warming. Based on high-resolution grid data, this study combines the daily-scale ERA5-Land dataset and the monthly-scale SPEI dataset with multiple indicators to analyze CDHWs. We calculated and analyzed the temporal and spatial modal distribution of CDHWs in Central Asia from 1981 to 2018, and in this paper, we discuss the sequence relationship between drought events, heatwave events, and CDHWs. The results show that the number of CDHWs in the study region have increased over time and expanded in terms of area, especially in eastern and southwestern Central Asia. The tsum (total frequency of CDHWs) was 0.5 times higher than the total heatwave frequency and it increased at a rate of 0.17/yr. The maximum duration of tmax (maximum duration of CDHWs in days) was 17 days. Furthermore, the occurrence rate of tmax was 96.67%, and the AH (CDHWs' accumulated heat) had a rate of 97.78%, which, upon examination of the spatial trend pattern, accounted for the largest increase in terms of area. We also found that the TAH (CDHWs' average temperature anomalies, SPEI < −0.5) shows obvious seasonality, with the increases in winter and spring being significantly greater than the increases in summer and autumn. The intensity of the CDHWs was stronger than that of a single extreme event, the temperature anomaly was higher than the average of 0.4–0.8 °C, and there was a north–south spatial pattern across the study region. In eastern and northwestern Central Asia, the AH and heatwaves (SPEI < −0.5) increased by 15–30 times per year on average. During the transition from the base period to the reference period, CDHWs increased by 25%, and the number of dry days prior to the CDHWs decreased by 7.35 days. Evapotranspiration (ET) plays an important role in the study of regional long-term water cycles. The water cycle in Mongolia has been seriously affected by global warming and the intensification of human activities. A significant relationship exists between climate factors and ET. In this paper, the temporal and spatial fluctuations and stability of ET in Mongolia from 2001 to 2020 were studied by using MOD16A2 ET, MOD13A2 NDVI and the climate data of ERA5-Land. ET trends were analysed by using the Breaks for Additive Season and Trend (BFAST) software package, Theil–Sen median trend analysis, Mann–Kendall method and Hurst index. The correlations between ET and temperature (Tem), precipitation (Pre), net solar radiation (Nsr), soil moisture (Swl) and human activities were determined by partial correlation analysis and a geographic detector. In the past 20 years, ET increased significantly in 49.4% of Mongolia, and NDVI also showed a significant increasing trend. BFAST detected two mutation years. ET decreased rapidly from 2006 to 2007 and increased rapidly from 2015 to 2016. In addition to winter, the meteorological factor that had a significant positive impact on ET in the east and west was Pre, whereas the impact of Tem was more obvious in central Mongolia. In winter, Tem had a great impact on ET. In the vegetation growing season, the joint action of NDVI and Pre greatly positively contributed to ET. The geographical detector showed that the influence of annual human factors on ET was weakened by changes in NDVI and Pre. In the growing season, Tem and Nsr increased nonlinearly to ET, and other natural and human factors showed bivariate enhancement. These results will help to understand the responses of ET changes to natural factors and human activities in Mongolia and provide data support for future research on ET and the water cycle. With global warming, Arctic sea ice, as one of the important factors regulating climate, has put forward new requirements for research. At present, the ground penetrating radar (GPR) is a powerful tool to obtain the structure of Arctic sea ice. Traditional offset imaging techniques no longer meet research requirements, and the two-parameter full waveform inversion (FWI) method has received widespread attention. To solve the high nonlinearity and ill-posed problem of FWI, the L-BFGS optimization algorithm and Wolfe criterion of inexact line search were used to update the model. The parameter scale factor, multiscale inversion strategy, and total variation (TV) regularization were introduced to optimize the inversion results. Finally, the inversion of anomalous bodies with different scales and different physical parameters is carried out, which verifies the reliability of the proposed method for dual-parameter imaging of Arctic sea ice and provides a powerful tool for the study of Arctic sea ice. Global land cover mapping has evolved in a number of ways over the past two decades including increased activity in the areas of map validation and inter-comparison, which is the main focus of this Special Issue in Remote Sensing. Here we describe the major trends in global land cover mapping that have occurred, followed by recent advances as exemplified by the papers in the Special Issue. Knowledge about changes in the glacier mass balance and climate fluctuation in the East Kunlun Mountains is still incomplete and heterogeneous. To understand the changes in the glacier mass in the Ulugh Muztagh Mountains in the East Kunlun Mountains due to global warming, a time series of satellite stereo-images from the Terra Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) were derived from 2000 to 2020. Digital elevation models (DEMs) of the glaciers were generated and used to assess the changes in these glacier masses from 2000 to 2020. The results show that the surface elevation of glaciers in the Ulugh Muztagh region changed by −0.17 ± 10.74 m from 2000 to 2020, corresponding to a mass change of −0.14 ± 9.13 m w.e. The glacier mass balance increased by 0.64 ± 9.22 m w.e. in 2000–2011 and then decreased by 0.78 ± 9.04 m w.e. in 2011–2020. The annual mass balance of the glaciers was −0.0072 ± 0.46 m w.e./yr from 2000 to 2020, showing glacial stability. The equilibrium line altitude (ELA) of the glacier was 5514 m a.s.l. from 2000 to 2020. In addition, we also found that the glacier mass losses in the west and north slopes were more significant than those in the east and south slopes. There was a phenomenon of glacier surges in the Yulinchuan glacier from 2007 to 2011. Overall, the glaciers were relatively stable with respect to the total glacier thickness in the Ulugh Muztagh Mountains. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The glaciers in southeastern Tibet Plateau (SETP) influenced by oceanic climate are sensitive to global warming, and there remains a notable deficiency in accurate multitemporal change analyses of these glaciers. We conduct glacier inventories in the Yigong Zangbo River Basin (YZRB) in SETP for the years 1988, 2015, and 2023 utilizing Landsat and Sentinel-2 imagery, and analyze the glacier spatiotemporal variation incorporating the existing glacier inventory data. Since the 1970s until 2023, the glaciers significantly retreated at a rate of 0.76 ± 0.11%·a−1, with the area decreasing from 2583.09 ± 88.80 km2 to 1635.89 ± 71.74 km2, and the ice volume reducing from 221.7017 ± 7.9618 km3 to 152.7429 ± 6.1747 km3. The most significant retreat occurred in glaciers smaller than 1 km2. Additionally, glaciers on southern aspects retreated slower than the northern counterparts. The glaciers in the western YZRB witnessed a significantly greater shrinkage rate than those in the eastern section, with the most pronounced changes occurring in Aso Longbu River Basin. Furthermore, severe glacier mass deficits were observed from 2000 to 2019, averaging a loss rate of 0.57 ± 0.06 m w.e. a−1. The continuous rise in air temperature has primarily induced a general widespread glacier change in the YZRB. However, diverse topography led to spatial variability in glacier changes with discrepancies as large as several times. The features of individual glaciers, such as glacier size, debris cover, and the development of ice-contact glacial lakes enhanced the local complexity of glacier change and elusive response behaviors to climate warming led by the different topographic conditions. With global warming, the global ocean is experiencing more and stronger marine heatwaves (MHWs) and less and weaker marine cold spells (MCSs). On the regional scale, the complex circulation structure means that the changes in sea surface temperature (SST) and extreme temperature anomaly events in the Taiwan Strait (TWS) exhibit unique regional characteristics. In summer (autumn), the SST in most regions of the TWS has a significant increasing trend with a regionally averaged rate of 0.22 °C (0.19 °C) per decade during the period 1982–2021. In winter and spring, the SST in the western strait shows a significant decreasing trend with a maximum decreasing rate of −0.48 °C per decade, while it shows an increasing trend in the eastern strait. The annual mean results show that the TWS is experiencing more MHWs and MCSs with time. The frequency of the MHWs in the eastern strait is increasing faster than that in the western strait. In the western region controlled by the Zhe-Min Coastal Current, the MCSs have an increasing trend while in the other areas they have a decreasing trend. The MHWs occur in most areas of the TWS in summer and autumn, but the MCSs are mainly concentrated in the west of the TWS in spring and winter. The cooling effect of summer upwelling tends to inhibit the occurrence of MHWs and enhance MCSs. The rising background SST is a dominant driver for the increasing trend of summer MHWs. Carbon use efficiency (CUE) was identified as a pivotal parameter for elucidating the carbon cycle within ecosystems. It signified the efficiency with which light energy was transformed into organic matter by vegetation. In light of the challenges posed by global warming, it was deemed essential to gain a comprehensive understanding of the fluctuations and determinants of CUE. Despite the significance of this topic, the current research on factors influencing CUE remained incomplete, notably lacking in exploration of the impacts of ecological engineering on CUE. The objective of this study is to elucidate the influences of climate change and ecological engineering on CUE, quantifying their effects using residual analysis. Additionally, it aims to analyze the primary factors contributing to the fluctuations in CUE. Our findings indicated an average CUE of 0.8536 (±0.0026) with minor interannual variation. In the Three Rivers Source region, CUE is jointly influenced by ecological engineering (30.88%) and climate change (69.12%). Notably, climatic factors predominantly regulate CUE, accounting for approximately 90.20% of its regional variations, with over 44.70% of areas exhibiting contributions exceeding 80%. Moreover, the impact of evapotranspiration on CUE surpasses that of precipitation and temperature, while factors such as elevation and vegetation types also play significant roles. This study showed the quantification of climate change and ecological engineering effects on CUE, which would hold substantial implications for predicting and evaluating global carbon cycling. Atmospheric water vapor is not only a key element of the global hydrological cycle but also the most abundant greenhouse gas. The phase transition and transportation of water vapor are essential for maintaining global energy balance and regulating hydrological processes. However, due to insufficient meteorological observational data, climate research in Africa faces significant limitations despite its substantial contribution to changes in global precipitable water vapor (PWV). In this study, we used MODIS near-infrared (NIR) PWV products and Berkeley temperature data to depict the spatial–temporal variability in PWV across Africa from 2001 to 2020. The results reveal a significant increasing trend in PWV over Africa, with an increase of 0.0158 cm/year. Nearly 99.96% of Africa shows an increase in PWV, with 88.95% of these areas experiencing statistically significant changes, particularly in central regions of Africa. The increase in PWV is more pronounced in high-value months compared to low-value months. The equatorial region of the Congo Basin exhibits higher PWV, which gradually decreases as latitude increases. Despite significant warming (0.0162 °C/year) in Africa, there is no consistent positive correlation between temperature and water vapor. A positive relationship between PWV and temperature is observed in western Africa, while a negative relationship is noted in eastern and southern Africa on an annual scale. Additionally, an increasing trend in precipitation (4.6669 mm/year) is observed, with a significant positive correlation between PWV and precipitation across most of Africa, although this relationship varies by month. The NOAA-AVHRR (National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration–Advanced Very High-Resolution Radiometer) archive includes data from 1981 onwards, which allow for estimating land surface temperature (LST), a key parameter for the study of global warming as well as surface characterization. However, algorithms for LST retrieval were developed before the latest sensors and were based on more reduced atmospheric datasets. Here, we present 50 novel sets of coefficients for an LST retrieval algorithm from NOAA-AVHRR sensors, to which we added one historical methodology, which we validate against historical in situ as well as independent satellite data. This validation shows that the historical algorithm performs surprisingly well, with an in situ RMSE below 1.5 K and a quasi-null bias when compared with independent satellite data. A couple of the novel algorithms also perform within expectations (errors below 1.5 K), so any of these could be used for the complete processing of the AVHRR dataset. The increasing water demand and the disparities in the spatiotemporal distribution of water resources will lead to increasingly severe water shortages in arid areas. Accurate evapotranspiration estimation is the basis for evaluating water stress and informing sustainable water resource management. In this study, we constructed a surface energy balance algorithm for land (SEBAL) model based on the Google Earth Engine platform to invert the actual evapotranspiration (ETa) in typical irrigation areas in Xinjiang, northwest China, during the growing season from 2005 to 2021. The inversion results were evaluated using the observed evaporation data and crop evapotranspiration estimated by the FAO Penman–Monteith method. The water stress index (WSI) was then calculated based on the simulated ETa. The impacts of climatic factors, hydrological conditions, land-use change, and irrigation patterns on ETa and WSI were analyzed. The results indicated the following: (1) The ETa simulated by the SEBAL model matched well with the observed data and the evapotranspiration estimated using the FAO Penman–Monteith approach, with correlation coefficients greater than 0.7. (2) The average ETa was 704 mm during the growing season, showing an increasing trend in the irrigation area of the Yanqi Basin (IAY), whereas for the irrigation area of Burqin (IAB) the average ETa was 677 mm during the growing season, showing an increasing trend. The land cover type mainly influenced the spatial distribution of ETa in the two study areas. (3) The WSI in both irrigation areas exhibited a decreasing trend, with the WSI in the IAY lower than that in the IAB. (4) Climate warming, increases in irrigation areas, and changes in cropping patterns led to increased ETa in the IAY and IAB; the overall decreasing trend in the WSI derived from the popularization of agricultural water-saving irrigation patterns in both regions, which reduces ineffective evapotranspiration and contributes positively to solving the water shortage problem in the basins. Climate warming can lead to permafrost degradation, potentially resulting in slope failures such as retrogressive thaw slumps (RTSs). The formation of and changes in RTSs could exacerbate the degradation of permafrost and the environment in general. The mechanisms of RTS progression and the potential consequences on the analogous freeze–thaw cycle are not well understood, owing partly to necessitating field work under harsh conditions and with high costs. Here, we used multi-source remote sensing and field surveys to quantify the changes in an RTS on Eboling Mountain in the Qilian Mountain Range in west-central China. Based on optical remote sensing and SBAS-InSAR measurements, we analyzed the RTS evolution and the underlying drivers, combined with meteorological observations. The RTS expanded from 56 m2 in 2015 to 4294 m2 in 2022, growing at a rate of 1300 m2/a to its maximum in 2018 and then decreasing. Changes in temperature and precipitation play a dominant role in the evolution of the RTS, and the extreme weather in 2016 may also be a primary contributor to the accelerated growth, with an average deformation of −8.3 mm during the thawing period, which decreased slope stability. The RTS evolved more actively during the thawing and early freezing process, with earthquakes having potentially contributed further to RTS evolution. Atmospheric turbulence primarily originates from abrupt density variations in a vertically stratified atmosphere. Based on the prognostic equation of turbulent kinetic energy (TKE), we here chose three indicators corresponding to the forcing terms of the TKE generation. By utilizing ERA5 reanalysis data, we investigate first the maximum achievable daily thickness of the planetary boundary layer (PBL). The gradient Richardson number (Ri) is used to represent turbulence arising from shear instability and the daily maximum convective available potential energy (CAPE) is examined to understand the turbulence linked with convective instability. Our analysis encompasses global turbulence trends. As a case study, we focus on the North Atlantic Corridor (NAC) to reveal notable insights. Specifically, the mean annual number of hours featuring shear instability (Ri < 0.25) surged by more than 300 h in consecutive 20-year periods: 1979–1998 and 1999–2018. Moreover, a substantial subset within the NAC region exhibited a notable rise of over 10% in the number of hours characterized as severe shear instability. Contrarily, turbulence associated with convective instability (CAPE > 2 kJ/kg), which can necessitate rerouting and pose significant aviation safety challenges, displays a decline. Remote sensing of clouds confirms these assertions. This decline contains a component of inherent natural variability. This study analyzes the temporal patterns of rainfed cereal phenology extracted from the GIMMS NDVI3g dataset in the main cereal-growing regions under a Mediterranean climate in Spain, Portugal, France and Italy during the period 1982–2022. The series before and after the beginning of the 21st century were analyzed separately. Phenological parameters were extracted using the modified dynamic threshold method, and their trends were analyzed. Correlation analyses were performed to study the relationships among these parameters and to analyze the influence of hydroclimatic variables on the start (SOS) and end (EOS) of the growing season. Results showed a temporal reversal in phenological trends between both study periods, coinciding with the global warming hiatus. In the first period (1982–2002), SOS and EOS advanced (−7.5 and −3.1 days, respectively), and the length of growing season (LOS) increased. However, during the second stage (2003–2022), SOS and EOS were delayed (7.5 and 1.7 days, respectively), and LOS decreased. Similar dynamics were observed for the influence of the hydroclimatic variables on SOS and EOS, stronger in the first period and weaker in the second. Evapotranspiration (ET) is the most significant constituent of the response to climate warming. It serves as a crucial link in the soil–vegetation–atmospheric continuum. Analyzing the driving forces and response of ET to regional-scale climate warming holds scientific significance in improving global water resource assessment methods and drought monitoring techniques. The innovation presented in this article is the calculation of ET by using GRACE/GRACE-FO satellite data through the water balance equation. The inter-annual and seasonal changes in ET in different regions of the Qilian Mountains were analyzed, along with quantifying the contribution of environmental meteorological factors to ET. The ETGRACE and ETMonitor products have good consistency, with a monthly correlation coefficient of 0.92, an NSE coefficient of 0.80, and a root mean square error of 10.38 mm. The results indicate that the increasing trend of ET in the Qilian Mountains region exhibits a "medium–high–low" distribution pattern. The rate of increase in ET is 5.2 mm/year in the central segment. In spring and summer, the overall trend of ET is an increasing one. However, the central and western segments exhibit a slight decreasing trend of ET in autumn. During winter, the southern part of the Qilian Mountains experiences a notable reduction in ET. The correlation between the changes in ET and soil moisture exhibited a strong association, with soil moisture change contributing significantly to ET: 57.8% for the eastern section, 52.8% for the middle section, and 46.9% for the western section. The thermal effect primarily controls ET variations within eastern sections, where temperature change accounts for approximately 6.7% of the total variation in ET levels. Conversely, the moisture factor dominates western sections, where precipitation change accounts for about 6.5% of the total variation in ET levels. Due to the distinct gradient characteristics of environmental meteorological factors in the central segment, the fluctuation of these factors collaboratively drives ET changes. The European Mediterranean Basin (Euro-Med), a region particularly vulnerable to global warming, notably lacks research aimed at assessing and enhancing the widely used remote climate detection products known as General Circulation Models (GCMs). In this study, the proficiency of GCMs in replicating reanalyzed 1981–2010 temperature data sourced from the ERA5 Land was assessed. Initially, the least data-modifying interpolation method for achieving a resolution match of 0.1° was ascertained. Subsequently, a pixel-by-pixel evaluation was conducted, employing five goodness-of-fit metrics. From these metrics, we compiled a Comprehensive Rating Index (CRI). A Multi-Model Ensemble using Random Forest was constructed and projected across three emission scenarios (SSP1-RCP2.6, SSP2-RCP4.5, and SSP5-RCP8.5) and timeframes (2026–2050, 2051–2075, and 2076–2100). Empirical Bayesian Kriging, selected for its minimal data alteration, supersedes the commonly employed Bilinear Interpolation. The evaluation results underscore MPI-ESM1-2-HR, GFDL-ESM4, CNRM-CM6-1, MRI-ESM2-0, CNRM-ESM2-1, and IPSL-CM6A-LR as top-performing models. Noteworthy geospatial disparities in model performance were observed. The projection outcomes, notably divergent from IPCC forecasts, revealed a warming trend of 1 to over 2 °C less than anticipated for spring and winter over the medium–long term, juxtaposed with heightened warming in mountainous/elevated regions. These findings could substantially refine temperature projections for the Euro-Med, facilitating the implementation of policy strategies to mitigate the effects of global warming in vulnerable regions worldwide. Predicting urban-scale carbon emissions (CEs) is crucial in drawing implications for various urgent environmental issues, including global warming. However, prior studies have overlooked the impact of the micro-level street environment, which might lead to biased prediction. To fill this gap, we developed an effective machine learning (ML) framework to predict neighborhood-level residential CEs based on a single data source, street view images (SVIs), which are publicly available worldwide. Specifically, more than 30 streetscape elements were classified from SVIs using semantic segmentation to describe the micro-level street environment, whose visual features can indicate major socioeconomic activities that significantly affect residential CEs. A ten-fold cross-validation was deployed to train ML models to predict the residential CEs at the 1 km grid level. We found, first, that random forest (R2 = 0.8) outperforms many traditional models, confirming that visual features are non-negligible in explaining CEs. Second, more building, wall, and fence views indicate higher CEs. Third, the presence of trees and grass is inversely related to CEs. Our findings justify the feasibility of using SVIs as a single data source to effectively predict neighborhood-level residential CEs. The framework is applicable to large regions across diverse urban forms, informing urban planners of sustainable urban form strategies to achieve carbon-neutral goals, especially for the development of new towns. Snow plays a crucial role in the global water cycle, providing water to over 20% of the world's population and serving as a vital component for flora, fauna, and climate regulation. Changes in snow patterns due to global warming have far-reaching impacts on water management, agriculture, and other economic sectors such as winter tourism. Additionally, they have implications for environmental stability, prompting migration and cultural shifts in snow-dependent communities. Accurate information on snow and its variables is, thus, essential for both scientific understanding and societal planning. This review explores the potential of remote sensing in monitoring snow water equivalent (SWE) on a large scale, analyzing 164 selected publications from 2000 to 2023. Categorized by methodology and content, the analysis reveals a growing interest in the topic, with a concentration of research in North America and China. Methodologically, there is a shift from passive microwave (PMW) inversion algorithms to artificial intelligence (AI), particularly the Random Forest (RF) and neural network (NN) approaches. A majority of studies integrate PMW data with auxiliary information, focusing thematically on remote sensing and snow research, with limited incorporation into broader environmental contexts. Long-term studies (>30 years) suggest a general decrease in SWE in the Northern Hemisphere, though regional and seasonal variations exist. Finally, the review suggests potential future SWE research directions such as addressing PMW data issues, downsampling for detailed analyses, conducting interdisciplinary studies, and incorporating forecasting to enable more widespread applications. Variations in the productivity of subnivean vegetation can substantially affect the ecology of regions more susceptible to increasing warming levels and lead to significant feedback effects on the global climate. Due to its importance, this topic is at the center of a broad scope of interdisciplinary studies supported by field and remote sensing observations. However, the current knowledge about environmental factors affecting the penetration of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) through snow is still constrained by the paucity of transmittance data. In this work, we aim to further the understanding about these interconnected processes. We conduct a systematic investigation about the effects of independent and combined changes in key nivological characteristics, namely thickness, saturation, density and grain size, on snow transmittance in the photosynthetic spectral domain. Our investigation is carried out through controlled in silico (computational) experiments supported by measured radiometric data. Its outcomes unveil fundamental quantitative and qualitative trends related to the role played by these nivological characteristics on the spectral quality of transmitted PAR, which is quantified in terms of red to blue ( R / B ), red to far-red ( R / F R ) and blue to far-red ( B / F R ) ratios. These trends include increases in the R / B ratio as well as decreases in the R / F R and B / F R ratios following thickness reductions or grain size increases, with opposite variations in these ratios being observed for saturation or density increases. Accordingly, the pairing of our findings with in situ and remotely collected information contributes to cement the scientific foundation required for the effective assessment of cause-effect loops linking accentuated vegetation greening to accelerated rates of snow cover recession. Surface albedo plays a controlling role in the surface energy budget, and albedo-induced radiative forcing has a significant impact on climate and environmental change (e.g., global warming, snow and ice melt, soil and vegetation degradation, and urban heat islands (UHIs)). Several existing review papers have summarized the algorithms and products of surface albedo as well as climate feedback at certain surfaces, while an overall understanding of various land types remains insufficient, especially with increasing studies on albedo management methods regarding mitigating global warming in recent years. In this paper, we present a comprehensive literature review on the variance pattern of surface albedo, the subsequent climate impact, and albedo management strategies. The results show that using the more specific term “surface albedo” is recommended instead of “albedo” to avoid confusion with similar terms (e.g., planetary albedo), and spatiotemporal changes in surface albedo can indicate subtle changes in the energy budget, land cover, and even the specific surface structure. In addition, the close relationships between surface albedo change and climate feedback emphasize the important role of albedo in climate simulation and forecasting, and many albedo management strategies (e.g., the use of retroreflective materials (RRMs)) have been demonstrated to be effective for climate mitigation by offsetting CO2 emissions. In future work, climate effects and management strategies regarding surface albedo at a multitude of spatiotemporal resolutions need to be systematically evaluated to promote its application in climate mitigation, where a life cycle assessment (LCA) method considering both climate benefits and side effects (e.g., thermal comfort) should be followed.

Extreme climate events such as storms and severe droughts are becoming more frequent under the warming climate. In the tropics, excess rainfall carried by hurricanes causes massive flooding and threatens ecosystems and human society. We assessed recent major floodings on the tropical island of Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria in 2017 and Hurricane Fiona in 2022, both of which cost billions of dollars damages to the island. We analyzed the Sentinel-1 synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images right after the hurricanes and detected surface inundation extent by applying a random forest classifier. We further explored hurricane rainfall patterns, flow accumulation, and other possible drivers of surface inundation at watershed scale and discussed the limitations. An independent validation dataset on flooding derived from high-resolution aerial images indicated a high classification accuracy with a Kappa statistic of 0.83. The total detected surface inundation amounted to 10,307 ha after Hurricane Maria and 7949 ha after Hurricane Fiona for areas with SAR images available. The inundation patterns are differentiated by the hurricane paths and associated rainfall patterns. We found that flow accumulation estimated from the interpolated Fiona rainfall highly correlated with the ground-observed stream discharges, with a Pearson's correlation coefficient of 0.98. The detected inundation extent was found to depend strongly on hurricane rainfall and topography in lowlands within watersheds. Normal climate, which connects to mean soil moisture, also contributed to the differentiated flooding extent among watersheds. The higher the accumulated Fiona rain and the lower the mean elevation in the flat lowlands, the larger the detected surface flooding extent at the watershed scale. Additionally, the drier the climate, which might indicate drier soils, the smaller the surface flooding areas. The approach used in this study is limited by the penetration capability of C-band SAR; further application of L-band images would expand the detection to flooding under dense vegetation. Detecting flooding by applying machine learning techniques to SAR satellite images provides an effective, efficient, and reliable approach to flood assessment in coastal regions on a large scale, hence helping to guide emergency responses and policy making and to mitigate flooding disasters. The Tibetan Plateau (TP) is distributed with large areas of permafrost, which have received increasing attention as the climate warms. Accurately modeling the extent of permafrost and permafrost changes is now an important challenge for climate change research and climate modeling in this region. Uncertainty in land use and land cover (LULC), which is important information characterizing surface conditions, directly affects the accuracy of the simulation of permafrost changes in land surface models. In order to investigate the effect of LULC uncertainty on permafrost simulation, we conducted simulation experiments on the TP using the Community Land Model, version 5 (CLM5) with five high-resolution LULC products in this study. Firstly, we evaluated the simulation results using shallow soil temperature data and deep borehole data at several sites. The results show that the model performs well in simulating shallow soil temperatures and deep soil temperature profiles. The effect of different land use products on the shallow soil temperature and deep soil temperature contours is not obvious due to the small differences in land use products at these sites. Although there is little difference in the simulating results of different land use products when compared to the permafrost distribution map, the differences are noticeable for the simulation of the active layer. Land cover had a greater impact on soil temperature simulations in regions with greater land use inconsistency, such as at the junction of bare soil and grassland in the northwestern part of the TP, as well as in the southeast region with complex topography. The main way in which this effect occurs is that land cover affects the net surface radiation, which in turn causes differences in soil temperature simulations. In addition, we discuss other factors affecting permafrost simulation results and point out that increasing the model plant function types as well as carefully selecting LULC products is one of the most important ways to improve the simulation performance of land-surface models in permafrost regions. The increasing rates of sea level rise caused by global warming within the 21st century are expected to exacerbate inundation and episodic flooding tide in low-lying coastal environments. This development threatens both human development and natural habitats within such coastal communities. The impact of sea level rise will be more pronounced in developing countries where there is limited adaptation capacity. This paper presents a comprehensive assessment of the expected impacts of sea level rise in three communities in the Dansoman coastal area of Accra, Ghana. Future sea level rises were projected based on global scenarios and the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization General Circulation Models-CSIRO_MK2_GS GCM. These were used in the SimCLIM model based on the modified Bruun rule and the simulated results overlaid on near vertical aerial photographs taken in 2005. It emerged that the Dansoman coastline could recede by about 202 m by the year 2100 with baseline from 1970 to 1990. The potential impacts on the socioeconomic and natural systems of the Dansoman coastal area were characterized at the Panbros, Grefi and Gbegbeyise communities. The study revealed that about 84% of the local dwellers is aware of the rising sea level in the coastal area but have poor measures of adapting to the effects of flood disasters. Analysis of the likely impacts of coastal inundation revealed that about 650,000 people, 926 buildings and a total area of about 0.80 km2 of land are vulnerable to permanent inundation by the year 2100. Nitrous oxide (N2O) is a potent and long-lived greenhouse gas that contributes to global warming with a global warming potential (GWP) 298 times that of carbon dioxide (CO2). In this paper, we analyzed the trend of N2O concentration in vertical layers of the stratosphere from 2005 to 2020 using the N2O observed from the Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS) that is on board the Aura satellite. We found that the local N2O concentration showed a downward trend in the lower stratosphere but rose or fluctuated in the upper stratosphere. The reduction reached −5 ppb/yr at pressure levels of 31.62 hPa and 68.13 hPa, with a confidence level of over 90%. The growth was around 1–2 ppb/yr in the upper stratosphere. In addition, a concentration anomaly was observed in the tropical stratosphere in 2013. After the appearance of this anomaly, the N2O concentration in the middle and lower layers of the tropical stratosphere was lower than before 2013. We speculated that the enhancement of the Brewer–Dobson circulation (BDC) upwelling before and after stratospheric sudden warming (SSW) is the main reason for the abnormal concentration distribution in 2013. Stratospheric N2O has changed significantly in the past 16 years with the mutual coupling effect of BDC and SSW and such changes can have further impact on the chemical equilibrium and radiation balance in the stratosphere, as well as on the persistent climate-warming trend. The widespread tree mortality caused by the European spruce bark beetle (Ips typographus L.) is a significant concern for Norway spruce-dominated (Picea abies H. Karst) forests in Europe and there is evidence of increases in the affected areas due to climate warming. Effective forest monitoring methods are urgently needed for providing timely data on tree health status for conducting forest management operations that aim to prepare and mitigate the damage caused by the beetle. Unoccupied aircraft systems (UASs) in combination with machine learning image analysis have emerged as a powerful tool for the fast-response monitoring of forest health. This research aims to assess the effectiveness of deep neural networks (DNNs) in identifying bark beetle infestations at the individual tree level from UAS images. The study compares the efficacy of RGB, multispectral (MS), and hyperspectral (HS) imaging, and evaluates various neural network structures for each image type. The findings reveal that MS and HS images perform better than RGB images. A 2D-3D-CNN model trained on HS images proves to be the best for detecting infested trees, with an F1-score of 0.759, while for dead and healthy trees, the F1-scores are 0.880 and 0.928, respectively. The study also demonstrates that the tested classifier networks outperform the state-of-the-art You Only Look Once (YOLO) classifier module, and that an effective analyzer can be implemented by integrating YOLO and the DNN classifier model. The current research provides a foundation for the further exploration of MS and HS imaging in detecting bark beetle disturbances in time, which can play a crucial role in forest management efforts to combat large-scale outbreaks. In the context of climate warming, flash drought has become increasingly frequent, posing significant threats to agriculture, ecosystems, and the environment. Xinjiang, located in an arid and semi-arid region, necessitates a thorough investigation into the distinctions between flash drought and traditional drought, as well as an exploration of the driving forces behind both types of drought. In this study, soil moisture data from ERA5-Land were utilized to construct a framework for the identification of flash drought and traditional drought based on historical events. The Geodetector was employed to explore the factors that influence the spatial heterogeneity of these two drought forms. The findings illuminate that (1) in terms of spatial distribution, traditional drought predominated in southern Xinjiang, while flash drought exhibited greater prominence in northern Xinjiang. (2) Regarding changes in trends, both flash drought and traditional drought exhibited an increasing trend in frequency since the 1990s, with the frequency trend of flash drought passing the significance test (α ≤ 0.05). Additionally, the severity of both flash drought and traditional drought displayed a noteworthy and statistically significant increase within sliding windows ranging from 46 to 62 years. (3) Concerning the driving forces, precipitation emerged as the principal driving force behind both flash drought and traditional drought. Furthermore, human activities exerted a more substantial influence on traditional drought, and the interactions involving human activities had the potential to significantly amplify the explanatory power of the spatial heterogeneity for both drought types. (4) In terms of the drought risk, a notable variation in the risk of flash drought was observed across various ecological zones, with the highest risk occurring in mildly fragile ecological zones. Furthermore, when comparing the results from 1995 to 2019, the flash drought risk exhibited a marked increase in severely fragile ecological zones. Global warming presents a significant threat to the sustainability of agricultural systems, demanding increased irrigation to mitigate the impacts of prolonged dry seasons. Efficient water management strategies, including deficit irrigation, have thus become essential, requiring continuous crop monitoring. However, conventional monitoring methods are laborious and time-consuming. This study investigates the potential of aerial imagery captured by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to predict critical water stress indicators—relative water content (RWC), midday leaf water potential (ΨMD), stomatal conductance (gs)—as well as the pigment content (chlorophyll ab, chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b and carotenoids) of trees in an olive orchard. Both thermal and spectral vegetation indices are calculated and correlated using linear and exponential regression models. The results reveal that the thermal vegetation indices contrast in estimating the water stress indicators, with the Crop Water Stress Index (CWSI) demonstrating higher precision in predicting the RWC (R2 = 0.80), ΨMD (R2 = 0.61) and gs (R2 = 0.72). Additionally, the Triangular Vegetation Index (TVI) shows superior accuracy in predicting the chlorophyll ab (R2 = 0.64) and chlorophyll a (R2 = 0.61), while the Modified Chlorophyll Absorption in Reflectance Index (MCARI) proves most effective for estimating the chlorophyll b (R2 = 0.52). This study emphasizes the potential of UAV-based multispectral and thermal infrared imagery in precision agriculture, enabling assessments of the water status and pigment content. As the world's highest and largest plateau, the Tibetan Plateau (TP) is referred to as "the Asian Water Tower" and "the Third Pole of the World" [[1]]. Wang et al. [[4]] reported that although the entire TP was found to be dominated by a positive surface air temperature difference both annually and seasonally, from 1950 to 2021 the TP experienced a significant decreasing trend in the annual surface air temperature difference at a rate of -0.07 K/decade. In addition, soil temperature and moisture in most areas of the TP were affected by air temperature and precipitation in turn, and both showed an upwards trend. In addition, Wang et al. Due to the scarcity of observational data and the intricate precipitation–runoff relationship, individually applying physically based hydrological models and machine learning (ML) techniques presents challenges in accurately predicting floods within data-scarce glacial river basins. To address this challenge, this study introduces an innovative hybrid model that synergistically harnesses the strengths of multi-source remote sensing data, a physically based hydrological model (i.e., Spatial Processes in Hydrology (SPHY)), and ML techniques. This novel approach employs MODIS snow cover data and remote sensing-derived glacier mass balance data to calibrate the SPHY model. The SPHY model primarily generates baseflow, rain runoff, snowmelt runoff, and glacier melt runoff. These outputs are then utilized as extra inputs for the ML models, which consist of Random Forest (RF), Gradient Boosting (GDBT), Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), Deep Neural Network (DNN), Support Vector Machine (SVM) and Transformer (TF). These ML models reconstruct the intricate relationship between inputs and streamflow. The performance of these six hybrid models and SPHY model is comprehensively explored in the Manas River basin in Central Asia. The findings underscore that the SPHY-RF model performs better in simulating and predicting daily streamflow and flood events than the SPHY model and the other five hybrid models. Compared to the SPHY model, SPHY-RF significantly reduces RMSE (55.6%) and PBIAS (62.5%) for streamflow, as well as reduces RMSE (65.8%) and PBIAS (73.51%) for floods. By utilizing bootstrap sampling, the 95% uncertainty interval for SPHY-RF is established, effectively covering 87.65% of flood events. Significantly, the SPHY-RF model substantially improves the simulation of streamflow and flood events that the SPHY model struggles to capture, indicating its potential to enhance the accuracy of flood prediction within data-scarce glacial river basins. This study offers a framework for robust flood simulation and forecasting within glacial river basins, offering opportunities to explore extreme hydrological events in a warming climate. The Earth Radiation Budget (ERB) at the top of the atmosphere quantifies how the earth gains energy from the sun and loses energy to space. Its monitoring is of fundamental importance for understanding ongoing climate change. In this paper, decadal changes of the Outgoing Longwave Radiation (OLR) as measured by the Clouds and Earth's Radiant Energy System from 2000 to 2018, the Earth Radiation Budget Experiment from 1985 to 1998, and the High-resolution Infrared Radiation Sounder from 1985 to 2018 are analysed. The OLR has been rising since 1985, and correlates well with the rising global temperature. An observational estimate of the derivative of the OLR with respect to temperature of 2.93 +/− 0.3 W/m 2 K is obtained. The regional patterns of the observed OLR change from 1985–2000 to 2001–2017 show a warming pattern in the Northern Hemisphere in particular in the Arctic, as well as tropical cloudiness changes related to a strengthening of La Niña. Land desertification associated with climate change and human activities significantly impacts ecosystem functioning in semi-arid alpine mountains. However, accurately revealing the state of desertification risk and the drivers of its evolution is frequently difficult, especially in the semi-arid alpine mountains. A new theoretical framework that combined qualitative and quantitative concepts has been developed to enhance ecological risk assessment in semi-arid alpine mountains and reveal the causes of desertification. The PSR model, multi-layer hierarchical theory, hierarchical analysis, inverse cloud generating principles, field surveys, structured questionnaires, and remote sensing techniques are all combined in this method. Our results showed that the risk of desertification in the study area exhibited a fluctuating trend between 2000 and 2020, with a period of decrease, followed by an increase, and then a subsequent decrease. However, the risk status remained overall stable, remaining at a light desertification level during the entire period. Desertification risk is driven primarily by climate warming and humidification, which can cause the melting of ice/snow. Additionally, increased rainfall and freeze–thaw cycles can enhance soil erosion, further exacerbating the risk. Conversely, the implementation of environmental protection projects, such as the establishment of protected areas, efforts to restore forests and grasslands, and initiatives to conserve soil and water, has been effective in limiting the increase in desertification risk. These efforts serve as a counterforce to the negative impacts of climate change and human activity, highlighting the beneficial effects of human intervention in preventing desertification. High-altitude, high-topographic relief places have considerable desertification risk, mainly in the alpine desert. Due to geography, grazing, rodent and pest infestation, and wildlife, there is still a risk of desertification expanding in low elevation areas. There will be a greater urgency in the future to enhance the management of anthropogenic activities in the local environment in order to handle the growing threat of desertification caused by climate change. This study combined the interactions of the natural environment and human activities, filled a research gap in assessing desertification risk, and revealed its driving mechanisms, as well as provided a theoretical foundation for improving the integrity and sustainability of ecosystems in semi-arid alpine regions and elsewhere. With ongoing global warming, heatwave-related disasters are on the rise, exerting a multifaceted impact on both the natural ecosystem and human society. While temperature has been extensively studied in the effects of extreme heat on human health, humidity has often been ignored. It is crucial to consider the combined influence of temperature and humidity when assessing heatwave risks and safeguarding human well-being. This study, leveraging remote sensing products and reanalysis data, presented the first analysis of the spatiotemporal variations in global human-perceived heatwaves on a seasonal scale from 2000 to 2020, and further employed the Random Forest (RF) regression model to quantitatively assess the explanatory power of seven driving factors. The study found that since the 21st century (1) changes in Heat Index (HI) have varied significantly worldwide, with the majority of regions witnessing an increase, particularly at higher latitudes. The largest HI-increasing area was observed in the second quarter (S2), while the overall HI increase peaked in the third quarter (S3); (2) except for the decreasing area of none-risk regions, the regions under all other risk levels expanded (the proportion of high-risk areas in the world increased from 2.97% to 3.69% in S2, and from 0.04% to 0.35% in the fourth quarter (S4)); (3) aspect demonstrated the greatest explanatory power for the global heatwave distribution (0.69–0.76), followed by land-use coverage (LUCC, 0.48–0.55) and precipitation (0.16–0.43), while the explanatory power of slope and nighttime light (NTL) was rather low; (4) over the years, the explanatory power of each factor for heatwave distribution underwent a minor decrease without significant trend, but exhibited seasonal periodicity. Climatic factors and LUCC were most impactful in the first quarter (S1), while DEM and other human factors dominated in S2; and (5) interaction factors showed no significant trends over the years, but the explanatory power of DEM and slope increased notably when interacting with climate factor, aspect, and LUCC, respectively. The interactions between the aspect and LUCC with precipitation yielded the highest explanatory power (above 0.85) across all interactions. To effectively tackle heatwave risks, it is suggested to concentrate on high-latitude regions, reinforce land use and urban planning with eco-friendly strategies, scrutinize the interplay between precipitation and heatwaves, capitalize on topographic data for devising well-informed prevention measures, and tailor response strategies to accommodate seasonal fluctuations. This study offers valuable insights for enhancing climate change adaptation, disaster prevention, and mitigation strategies, ultimately contributing to the alleviation of extreme heatwaves and risk reduction. The Tibetan Plateau (TP) has the largest number of high-altitude glaciers on Earth. As a source of major rivers in Asia, this region provides fresh water to more than one billion people. Any terrestrial water storage (TWS) changes there have major societal effects in large parts of the continent. Due to the recent acceleration in global warming, part of the water environment in TP has become drastically unbalanced, with an increased risk of water disasters. We quantified secular and monthly glacier-mass-balance and TWS changes in water basins from April 2002 to December 2021 through the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment and its Follow-on satellite mission (GRACE/GRACE-FO). Adequate data postprocessing with destriping filters and gap filling and two regularization methods implemented in the spectral and space domain were applied. The largest glacier-mass losses were found in the Nyainqentanglha Mountains and Eastern Himalayas, with rates of −4.92 ± 1.38 Gt a−1 and −4.34 ± 1.48 Gt a−1, respectively. The Tien Shan region showed strong losses in its eastern and central parts. Furthermore, we found small glacier-mass increases in the Karakoram and West Kunlun. Most of the glacier mass change can be explained by snowfall changes and, in some areas, by summer rainfall created by the Indian monsoon. Major water basins in the north and south of the TP exhibited partly significant negative TWS changes. In turn, the endorheic region and the Qaidam basin in the TP, as well as the near Three Rivers source region, showed distinctly positive TWS signals related to net precipitation increase. However, the Salween River source region and the Yarlung Zangbo River basin showed decreasing trends. We suggest that our new and improved TWS-change results can be used for the maintenance of water resources and the prevention of water disasters not only in the TP, but also in surrounding Asian countries. Grassland cover is strongly influenced by climate change. The response of grassland cover to climate change becomes complex with background climate. There have been some advances in research on the sensitivity of grassland vegetation to climate change around the world, but the differences in climate sensitivity among grassland types are still unclear in alpine grassland. Therefore, we applied MODIS NDVI data and trend analysis methods to quantify the spatial and temporal variation of grassland vegetation cover on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Then, we used multiple regression models to analyze the sensitivity of fractional vegetation cover (FVC) to climatic factors (Temperature, Precipitation, Solar radiation, Palmer drought severity index) and summarized the potential mechanisms of vegetation sensitivity to different climatic gradients. Our results showed (1) a significant increasing trend in alpine desert FVC from 2000–2018 (1.12 × 10−3/a, R2 = 0.56, p < 0.001) but no significant trend in other grassland types. (2) FVC sensitivity to climatic factors varied among grassland types, especially in the alpine desert, which had over 60% of the area with positive sensitivity to temperature, precipitation and PDSI. (3) The sensitivity of grassland FVC to heat factors decreases with rising ambient temperature while the sensitivity to moisture increases. Similarly, the sensitivity to moisture decreases while the sensitivity to thermal factors increases along the moisture gradient. Furthermore, the results suggest that future climate warming will promote grassland in cold and wet areas of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and may suppress vegetation in warmer areas. In contrast, the response of the alpine desert to future climate is more stable. Studying the variation in vegetation types within the source region of the Yellow River (SRYR) is of great significance for understanding the response of vegetation to climate change and human activities on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP) permafrost. In order to understand the characteristics of the variation in vegetation associations in the SRYR under the influence of climate and human activities, two hyperspectral remote sensing images from HJ-1A in 2013 and OHS-3C in 2020 were used to extract the vegetation types located in the area south of Ngoring Lake, covering 437.11 km2 in Maduo County, from the perspective of vegetation associations. Here, the hybrid spectral CNN (HybridSN) model, which is dependent on both spatial and spectral information, was used for vegetation association classifications. On this basis, the variations in vegetation associations from 2013 to 2020 were studied using the transition matrix, and the variation in noxious weeds across different altitude and slope gradients was analyzed. As an example, Thermopsis lanceolata's spatial distribution pattern and diffusion mechanism were analyzed. The results showed that (1) in addition to noxious weeds, herbage such as Poa poophagorum, Stipa purpurea, Kobresia humilis, and Carex moorcroftii increased, indicating that the overall ecological environment tended to improve, which may be attributed mainly to the development of a warm and humid climate. (2) Most of the noxious weeds were located at low altitudes with an area increase in the 4250–4400 m altitude range and a decrease in the 4400–4500 m altitude range. More attention should be given to the fact that the noxious weeds area increased from 2.88 km2 to 9.02 km2 between 2013 and 2020, which was much faster than that of herbage and may threaten local livestock development. (3) The Thermopsis lanceolate association characterized by an aggregated distribution tended to spread along roads, herdsmen sites, and degraded swamps, which were mainly affected by human activities and swamp degradation. With the acceleration of global warming, research on forests has become important. Vertical forest structure is an indicator of forest vitality and diversity. Therefore, further studies are essential. The investigation of forest structures has traditionally been conducted through in situ surveys, which require substantial time and money. To overcome these drawbacks, in our previous study, vertical forest structure was mapped through machine learning techniques and multi-seasonal remote sensing data, and the classification performance was improved to a 0.92 F1-score. However, the use of multi-seasonal images includes tree location errors owing to changes in the timing and location of acquisition between images. This error can be reduced by using a modified U-Net model that generates a low-resolution output map from high-resolution input data. Therefore, we mapped vertical forest structures from a multi-seasonal unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) optic and LiDAR data using three modified U-Net models to improve mapping performance. Spectral index maps related to forests were calculated as optic images, and canopy height maps were produced using the LiDAR-derived digital surface model (DSM) and digital terrain model (DTM). Spectral index maps and filtered canopy height maps were then used as input data and applied to the following three models: (1) a model that modified only the structure of the decoder, (2) a model that modified both the structure of the encoder and decoder, and (3) a model that modified the encoder, decoder, and the part that concatenated the encoder and decoder. Model 1 had the best performance with an F1-score of 0.97. The F1-score value was higher than 0.9 for both Model 2 and Model 3. Model 1 improved the performance by 5%, compared to our previous research. This implies that the model performance is enhanced by reducing the influence of position error. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
