The increasing global warming trend has resulted in the mass loss of most glaciers. The Urumqi Vally, located in the dry and cold zone of China, and its widely dispersed glaciers are significant to the regional ecological environment, oasis economic development, and industrial and agricultural production. This is representative of glaciers in Middle Asia and represents one of the world's longest observed time series of glaciers, beginning in 1959. The Urumqi Headwater Glacier No. 1 (UHG-1) has a dominant presence in the World Glacier Monitoring Service (WGMS). This paper supplies a comprehensive analysis of past studies and future modeling of glacier changes in the Urumqi Valley. It has received insufficient attention in the past, and the mass balance of UHG-1 was used to verify that the geodetic results and the OGGM model simulation results are convincing. The main conclusions are: The area of 48.68 ± 4.59 km2 delineated by 150 glaciers in 1958 decreased to 21.61 ± 0.27 km2 delineated by 108 glaciers in 2022, with a reduction of 0.47 ± 0.04 km2·a−1 (0.96% a−1 in 1958–2022). The glacier mass balance by geodesy is −0.69 ± 0.11 m w.e.a−1 in 2000–2022, which is just deviating from the measured result (−0.66 m w.e.a−1), but the geodetic result in this paper can be enough to reflect the glacier changes (−0.65 ± 0.11 m w.e.a−1) of the URB in 2000–2022. The future loss rate of area and volume will undergo a rapid and then decelerating process, with the fastest and slowest inflection points occurring around 2035 and 2070, respectively. High temperatures and large precipitation in summer accelerate glacier loss, and the corresponding lag period of glacier change to climate is about 2–3 years. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Freeze–thaw (FT) erosion intensity may exhibit a future increasing trend with climate warming, humidification, and permafrost degradation in the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau (QTP). The present study provides a reference for the prevention and control of FT erosion in the QTP, as well as for the protection and restoration of the regional ecological environment. FT erosion is the third major type of soil erosion after water and wind erosion. Although FT erosion is one of the major soil erosion types in cold regions, it has been studied relatively little in the past because of the complexity of several influencing factors and the involvement of shallow surface layers at certain depths. The QTP is an important ecological barrier area in China. However, this area is characterized by harsh climatic and fragile environmental conditions, as well as by frequent FT erosion events, making it necessary to conduct research on FT erosion. In this paper, a total of 11 meteorological, vegetation, topographic, geomorphological, and geological factors were selected and assigned analytic hierarchy process (AHP)-based weights to evaluate the FT erosion intensity in the QTP using a comprehensive evaluation index method. In addition, the single effects of the selected influencing factors on the FT erosion intensity were further evaluated in this study. According to the obtained results, the total FT erosion area covered 1.61 × 106 km2, accounting for 61.33% of the total area of the QTP. The moderate and strong FT erosion intensity classes covered 6.19 × 105 km2, accounting for 38.37% of the total FT erosion area in the QTP. The results revealed substantial variations in the spatial distribution of the FT erosion intensity in the QTP. Indeed, the moderate and strong erosion areas were mainly located in the high mountain areas and the hilly part of the Hoh Xil frozen soil region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Snow plays a crucial role in the global water cycle, providing water to over 20% of the world's population and serving as a vital component for flora, fauna, and climate regulation. Changes in snow patterns due to global warming have far-reaching impacts on water management, agriculture, and other economic sectors such as winter tourism. Additionally, they have implications for environmental stability, prompting migration and cultural shifts in snow-dependent communities. Accurate information on snow and its variables is, thus, essential for both scientific understanding and societal planning. This review explores the potential of remote sensing in monitoring snow water equivalent (SWE) on a large scale, analyzing 164 selected publications from 2000 to 2023. Categorized by methodology and content, the analysis reveals a growing interest in the topic, with a concentration of research in North America and China. Methodologically, there is a shift from passive microwave (PMW) inversion algorithms to artificial intelligence (AI), particularly the Random Forest (RF) and neural network (NN) approaches. A majority of studies integrate PMW data with auxiliary information, focusing thematically on remote sensing and snow research, with limited incorporation into broader environmental contexts. Long-term studies (>30 years) suggest a general decrease in SWE in the Northern Hemisphere, though regional and seasonal variations exist. Finally, the review suggests potential future SWE research directions such as addressing PMW data issues, downsampling for detailed analyses, conducting interdisciplinary studies, and incorporating forecasting to enable more widespread applications. Satellite-derived Land Surface Temperature (LST) dynamics have been increasingly used to study various geophysical processes. This review provides an extensive overview of the applications of LST in the context of global change. By filtering a selection of relevant keywords, a total of 164 articles from 14 international journals published during the last two decades were analyzed based on study location, research topic, applied sensor, spatio-temporal resolution and scale and employed analysis methods. It was revealed that China and the USA were the most studied countries and those that had the most first author affiliations. The most prominent research topic was the Surface Urban Heat Island (SUHI), while the research topics related to climate change were underrepresented. MODIS was by far the most used sensor system, followed by Landsat. A relatively small number of studies analyzed LST dynamics on a global or continental scale. The extensive use of MODIS highly determined the study periods: A majority of the studies started around the year 2000 and thus had a study period shorter than 25 years. The following suggestions were made to increase the utilization of LST time series in climate research: The prolongation of the time series by, e.g., using AVHRR LST, the better representation of LST under clouds, the comparison of LST to traditional climate change measures, such as air temperature and reanalysis variables, and the extension of the validation to heterogenous sites. The Mu Us dune field is one of China's four major dune fields, which are ecologically vulnerable areas of northwest semiarid land across Shaanxi, Ningxia, and Inner Mongolia, also very sensitive to the global temperature rise and environmental changes. This paper uses data on the temperature, precipitation, and precipitable water vapor (PWV) in the Mu Us dune field and its surrounding areas to analyze and discuss the time series and spatial distribution characteristics of these three factors in this area. The results of the study show that, in recent years, the trend of temperature increase in the Mu Us dune field has been higher than the average level in China, but this trend has gradually subsided since 2000. The spatial distribution of temperature presents an obvious characteristic of gradual increase from north to south and is affected by latitude, altitude, and topography. The annual cumulative precipitation of the Mu Us dune field is lower than the average level in China. However, in recent years, the rate of the increase in precipitation in this area has been significantly higher than that of the average rate of increase in China. The eastern part of the dune field has the most precipitation, which gradually decreases to the west. The spatial distribution of precipitation is greatly affected by monsoon factors in the region and the distribution of rivers. In the research field, PWV has been rising in recent years, which is greatly related to the increase of vegetation coverage in this region. In the context of global warming, the general increase in temperature has led to an increase in heatwave events, as well as a dramatic intensification of economic losses and social risks. This study employs the latest intensity–area–duration (IAD) framework that takes into account the temporal continuity and spatial dynamics of extreme events to identify regional heatwave events, and extracts key parameters of heatwave events to study the associated changes in frequency, intensity, influence area, and duration in seven geographic subregions of China in the 1979–2018 period. Heatwaves of all durations increased in frequency and intensity during the research period, with shorter heatwaves increasing in frequency and intensity at a faster rate than longer heatwaves. Among the seven geographic subregions, Xinjiang (XJ) and Southern China (SC) are the regions with the most frequent heatwave occurrence, while the Southwest (SW) and SC have the highest increase in heatwave frequency. In terms of regional distributions, XJ has the strongest heatwave event intensity and the largest affected area, while SC has the longest duration. However, in terms of spatial trends, SC, XJ, and the SW have the highest rates of intensity growth, influence area, and duration, respectively. In addition, heatwaves with extended durations and vast influence areas are more likely to occur in SC, and their frequency is on the rise. During the study period, the intensity, influence area, and length of heatwave occurrences in China exhibited an upward tendency, and it was shown that the longer the duration, the greater the intensity and the broader the influence area. In addition, the evolutionary characteristics of heatwave events with the longest duration indicate a certain consistency in their intensity and influence. In view of global warming, caused by the increase in the concentration of greenhouse gases, China has proposed a series of carbon emission reduction policies. It is necessary to obtain the spatiotemporal distribution of carbon emissions accurately. Nighttime light data is recognized as an important basis for carbon emission estimation. A large number of research results show that there is a positive correlation between nighttime light intensity and carbon emission. However, in the current context of China's industrial reforms, this positive relationship may not be entirely correct. First, we correct the nighttime light data from different satellites and established a long-term series data set. Then, we verify the positive correlation between nighttime light and carbon emission. However, the time scale of emission data often lags, and the carbon concentration data are released earlier and are more accurate than emission data. Therefore, we propose to investigate the relationship between nighttime light and carbon concentration. It is found that there may be different correlations between nighttime light and the carbon concentration, due to different urban industrial structure and development planning. Therefore, by exploring the relationship between nighttime light and the carbon concentration, the existing carbon emission estimation model can be modified to improve the accuracy of the emission model. Global warming is deeply influencing various ecological processes, especially regarding the phenological synchronization pattern between species, but more cases around the world are needed to reveal it. We report how the forest leaf phenology and ungulate molting respond differently to climate change, and investigate whether it will result in a potential phenology mismatch. Here, we explored how climate change might alter phenological synchronization between forest leaf phenology and Siberian roe deer (Capreolus pygargus) molting in northeast China based on a camera-trapping dataset of seven consecutive years, analyzing forest leaf phenology in combination with records of Siberian roe deer molting over the same period by means of wavelet analysis. We found that the start of the growing season of forest leaf phenology was advanced, while the end of the growing season was delayed, so that the length of the growing season was prolonged. Meanwhile, the start and the end of the molting of Siberian roe deer were both advanced in spring, but in autumn, the start of molting was delayed while the end of molting was advanced. The results of wavelet analysis also suggested the time lag of synchronization fluctuated slightly from year to year between forest leaf phenology and Siberian roe deer molting, with a potential phenology mismatch in spring, indicating the effect of global warming on SRD to forest leaf phenology. Overall, our study provides new insight into the synchronization between forest leaf phenology and ungulate molting, and demonstrates feasible approaches to data collection and analysis using camera-trapping data to explore global warming issues. Global warming and rapid socioeconomic development increased the risk of regional and global disasters. Particularly in China, annual heatwaves (HWs) caused many fatalities and substantial property damage, with an increasing trend. Therefore, it is of great scientific value and practical importance to analyze the spatiotemporal changes of HW in China for the sustainable development of regional socioeconomic and disaster risk management. In this study, based on gridded maximum temperature product and specific humidity dataset, an HW evaluation algorithm, considering the impact of humidity on the human body and the characteristics of HW in China, was employed to generate daily HW state at light, moderate, and severe levels for the period 1979–2018. Consequently, the regional differences at three HW levels were revealed, and the changing trend of HW onset, termination, and duration in each subregion was analyzed. The results show that in the three levels, the frequency and duration of HW in China had a significant increasing trend, generally characterized by the advancement of HW onset and the postponement of HW termination. The HW influence at light, moderate and severe levels decreased gradually, with the light level occurring the earliest and terminating the latest. Among the seven subregions, the largest HW frequency happened to be mainly in XJ (Xinjiang), SC (Southern China), and NC (Northern China), while the variations of HW onset and termination had noticeable regional differences at the three levels. In recent decades, land use/cover change (LUCC) due to urbanization, deforestation, and desertification has dramatically increased, which changes the global landscape and increases the pressure on the environment. LUCC not only accelerates global warming but also causes widespread and irreversible loss of biodiversity. Therefore, LUCC reconstruction has important scientific and practical value for studying environmental and ecological changes. The commonly used LUCC reconstruction models can no longer meet the growing demand for uniform and high-resolution LUCC reconstructions. In view of this circumstance, a deep learning-integrated LUCC reconstruction model (DLURM) was developed in this study. Zhenlai County of Jilin Province (1986–2013) was taken as an example to verify the proposed DLURM. The average accuracy of the DLURM reached 92.87% (compared with the results of manual interpretation). Compared with the results of traditional models, the DLURM had significantly better accuracy and robustness.
