Surface albedo is a key variable influencing ground-reflected solar irradiance, which is a vital factor in boosting the energy gains of bifacial solar installations. Therefore, surface albedo is crucial towards estimating photovoltaic power generation of both bifacial and tilted solar installations. Varying across daylight hours, seasons, and locations, surface albedo is assumed to be constant across time by various models. The lack of granular temporal observations is a major challenge to the modeling of intra-day albedo variability. Though satellite observations of surface reflectance, useful for estimating surface albedo, provide wide spatial coverage, they too lack temporal granularity. Therefore, this paper considers a novel approach to temporal downscaling with imaging time series of satellite-sensed surface reflectance and limited high-temporal ground observations from surface radiation (SURFRAD) monitoring stations. Aimed at increasing information density for learning temporal patterns from an image series and using visual redundancy within such imagery for temporal downscaling, we introduce temporally shifted heatmaps as an advantageous approach over Gramian Angular Field (GAF)-based image time series. Further, we propose Multispectral-WaveMix, a derivative of the mixer-based computer vision architecture, as a high-performance model to harness image time series for surface albedo forecasting applications. Multispectral-WaveMix models intra-day variations in surface albedo on a 1 min scale. The framework combines satellite-sensed multispectral surface reflectance imagery at a 30 m scale from Landsat and Sentinel-2A and 2B satellites and granular ground observations from SURFRAD surface radiation monitoring sites as image time series for image-to-image translation between remote-sensed imagery and ground observations. The proposed model, with temporally shifted heatmaps and Multispectral-WaveMix, was benchmarked against predictions from models image-to-image MLP-Mix, MLP-Mix, and Standard MLP. Model predictions were also contrasted against ground observations from the monitoring sites and predictions from the National Solar Radiation Database (NSRDB). The Multispectral-WaveMix outperformed other models with a Cauchy loss of 0.00524, a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of 72.569, and a structural similarity index (SSIM) of 0.999, demonstrating the high potential of such modeling approaches for generating granular time series. Additional experiments were also conducted to explore the potential of the trained model as a domain-specific pre-trained alternative for the temporal modeling of unseen locations. As bifacial solar installations gain dominance to fulfill the increasing demand for renewables, our proposed framework provides a hybrid modeling approach to build models with ground observations and satellite imagery for intra-day surface albedo monitoring and hence for intra-day energy gain modeling and bifacial deployment planning. This study explores advanced methodologies for estimating subcanopy solar radiation using LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging)-derived point clouds and GIS (Geographic Information System)-based models, with a focus on evaluating the impact of different LiDAR data types on model performance. The research compares the performance of two modeling approaches—r.sun and the Point Cloud Solar Radiation Tool (PCSRT)—in capturing solar radiation dynamics beneath tree canopies. The models were applied to two contrasting environments: a forested area and a built-up area. The r.sun model, based on raster data, and the PCSRT model, which uses voxelized point clouds, were evaluated for their accuracy and efficiency in simulating solar radiation. Data were collected using terrestrial laser scanning (TLS), unmanned laser scanning (ULS), and aerial laser scanning (ALS) to capture the structural complexity of canopies. Results indicate that the choice of LiDAR data significantly affects model outputs. PCSRT, with its voxel-based approach, provides higher precision in heterogeneous forest environments. Among the LiDAR types, ULS data provided the most accurate solar radiation estimates, closely matching in situ pyranometer measurements, due to its high-resolution coverage of canopy structures. TLS offered detailed local data but was limited in spatial extent, while ALS, despite its broader coverage, showed lower precision due to insufficient point density under dense canopies. Optical remote sensing images are easily affected by atmospheric absorption and scattering, and the low contrast and low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of aerial images as well as the different sensors of aerial and satellite images bring a great challenge to image matching. A tilted aerial image and satellite image matching algorithm based on edge curve direction angle features (ECDAF) is proposed, which accomplishes image matching by extracting the edge features of the images and establishing the curve direction angle feature descriptors. First, tilt and resolution transforms are performed on the satellite image, and edge detection and contour extraction are performed on the aerial image and transformed satellite image to make preparations for image matching. Then, corner points are detected and feature descriptors are constructed based on the edge curve direction angle. Finally, the integrated matching similarity is computed to realize aerial–satellite image matching. Experiments run on a variety of remote sensing datasets including forests, hills, farmland, and lake scenes demonstrate that the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm shows a great improvement over existing state-of-the-art algorithms. Vegetation, as a fundamental component of terrestrial ecosystems, plays a pivotal role in the flux of water, heat, and nutrients between the lithosphere, biosphere, and atmosphere. Assessing the impacts of climate change and human activities on vegetation dynamics is essential for maintaining the health and stability of fragile ecosystems, such as the Yarlung Zangbo River (YZR) basin of the Tibetan Plateau, the highest-elevation river basin in the world. Vegetation responses to climate change are inherently asymmetric, characterized by distinct temporal effects. However, these temporal effects remain poorly understood, particularly in high-altitude ecosystems. Here, we examine the spatiotemporal changes in leaf area index (LAI) and four climatic factors—air temperature, precipitation, potential evapotranspiration, and solar radiation—in the YZR basin over the period 2000–2019. We further explore the time-lag and time-accumulation impacts of these climatic factors on LAI dynamics and apply an enhanced residual trend analysis to disentangle the relative contributions of climate change and human activities. Results indicated that (1) a modest increase in annual LAI at a rate of 0.02 m2 m−2 dec−1 was detected across the YZR basin. Spatially, LAI increased in 66% of vegetated areas, with significant increases (p < 0.05) in 10% of the basin. (2) Temperature, precipitation, and potential evapotranspiration exhibited minimal time-lag (<0.5 months) but pronounced notable time-accumulation effects on LAI variations, with accumulation periods ranging from 1 to 2 months. In contrast, solar radiation demonstrated significant time-lag impacts, with an average lag period of 2.4 months, while its accumulation effects were relatively weaker. (3) Climate change and human activities contributed 0.023 ± 0.092 and –0.005 ± 0.109 m2 m−2 dec−1 to LAI changes, respectively, accounting for 60% and 40% on the observed variability. Spatially, climate change accounted for 85% of the changes in LAI in the upper YZR basin, while vegetation dynamics in the lower basin was primarily driven by human activities, contributing 63%. In the middle basin, vegetation dynamics were influenced by the combined effects of climate change and human activities. Evapotranspiration (ET) plays a crucial role in the hydrological cycle, significantly impacting agricultural productivity and water resource management, particularly in water-scarce areas. This study explores the effects of key climate variables temperature, precipitation, solar radiation, wind speed, and humidity on ET from 2000 to 2020, with forecasts extended to 2030. Advanced data preprocessing techniques, including Yeo-Johnson and Box-Cox transformations, Savitzky–Golay smoothing, and outlier elimination, were applied to improve data quality. Datasets from MODIS, TRMM, GLDAS, and ERA5 were utilized to enhance model accuracy. The predictive performance of various time series forecasting models, including Prophet, SARIMA, STL + ARIMA, TBATS, ARIMAX, and ETS, was systematically evaluated. This study also introduces novel algorithms for Explainable AI (XAI) and SHAP (SHapley Additive exPlanations), enhancing the interpretability of model predictions and improving understanding of how climate variables affect ET. This comprehensive methodology not only accurately forecasts ET but also offers a transparent approach to understanding climatic effects on ET. The results indicate that Prophet and ETS models demonstrate superior prediction accuracy compared to other models. The ETS model achieved the lowest Mean Absolute Error (MAE) values of 0.60 for precipitation, 0.51 for wind speed, and 0.48 for solar radiation. Prophet excelled with the lowest Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE) values of 0.62 for solar radiation, 0.67 for wind speed, and 0.74 for precipitation. SHAP analysis indicates that temperature has the strongest impact on ET predictions, with SHAP values ranging from −1.5 to 1.0, followed by wind speed (−0.75 to 0.75) and solar radiation (−0.5 to 0.5). Water-use efficiency (WUE) is an important indicator for understanding the coupling of carbon and water cycles in terrestrial ecosystems. It provides a comprehensive reflection of ecosystems' responses to various environmental factors, making it essential for understanding how ecosystems adapt to complex environmental changes. Using satellite-based estimates of gross primary productivity (GPP) and evapotranspiration (ET), our study investigated the spatiotemporal variations in WUE across China's terrestrial ecosystems from 2001 to 2020. We employed the geographic detector method, partial correlation analysis, and ridge regression to assess the contributions of different factors (temperature, precipitation, solar radiation, vapor pressure deficit, leaf area index, and soil moisture) to GPP, ET, and WUE. The results show significant increases in GPP, ET, and WUE during the study period, with increase rates of 6.70 g C m−2 yr−1, 2.68 kg H2O m−2 yr−1, and 0.007 g C H2O m−2 yr−1, respectively. More than three-quarters of the regions with significant trends in WUE (p < 0.05) displayed notable increases in WUE (p < 0.05). Among all driving factors, leaf area index (LAI) made the largest contribution to WUE, particularly in warm temperate semi-humid regions. Exploring NPP changes and their corresponding drivers is significant for the achievement of sustainable ecosystem management and in addressing climate change. This study aimed to explore the spatiotemporal variation in NPP and analyze the effects of vegetation and climate change on the global NPP from 2003 to 2020. Methodologically, the Theil–Sen and Mann–Kendall methods were used to study the spatiotemporal characteristics of global NPP change. Moreover, a ridge regression model was built by selecting the vegetation indicators of the leaf area index (LAI) and fraction vegetation coverage (FVC) and the climate factors of CO2, shortwave downward solar radiation (Rsd), precipitation (P), and temperature (T). Then, the relative contributions of each factor were evaluated. The results showed that, over the previous two decades, the global mean NPP reached 503.43 g C m−2 yr−1, with a fluctuating upward trend of 1.52 g C m−2 yr−1. The regions with a significant increase in NPP (9.22 g C m−2 yr−1) were mainly located in Central Africa, while the regions with decreasing NPP (−3.21 g C m−2 yr−1) were primarily in the Amazon Rainforest in northern South America. Additionally, CO2, the LAI, and the FVC exhibited positive contributions to the NPP trend, with the predominant factors being CO2 (relative contribution of 32.22%) and the LAI (relative contribution of 21.96%). In contrast, the contributions of Rsd and precipitation were relatively low (<10%). In addition, the contributions varied at different land cover and climate zone scales. The CO2, LAI, FVC, and temperature were the predominant factors affecting NPP across the vegetation types. At the scale of climate zones, CO2 was the predominant factor influencing changes in vegetation NPP. As the climate gradually transitioned towards temperate and cold regions, the contribution of the LAI to NPP increased. The findings of this study help to clarify the effects of vegetation and climate change on the ecosystem, providing theoretical support for ecological environmental protection and other related initiatives. In the optical satellite on-orbit imaging quality estimation system, the calculation of Modulation Transfer Function (MTF) is not fully standardized, and the influence of atmosphere is often simplified, making it difficult to obtain completely consistent on-orbit MTF measurements and comparisons. This study investigates the effects of various factors—such as edge angle, edge detection methods, oversampling rate, and interpolation techniques—on the accuracy of MTF calculations in the commonly used slanted-edge method for on-orbit MTF assessment, informed by simulation experiments. A relatively optimal MTF calculation process is proposed, which employs the Gaussian fitting method for edge detection, the adaptive oversampling rate, and the Lanczos (a = 3) interpolation method, minimizing the absolute deviation in the MTF results. A method to quantitatively analyze the atmospheric scattering and absorption MTF is proposed that employs a radiative transfer model. Based on the edge images of GF-2 satellite, images with various atmospheric conditions and imaging parameters are simulated, and their atmospheric scattering and absorption MTF is obtained through comparing the MTFs of the ground and top atmosphere radiance. The findings reveal that aerosol optical depth (AOD), viewing zenith angle (VZA), and altitude (ALT) are the primary factors influencing the accuracy of GF-2 satellite on-orbit MTF measurements in complex scenarios. The on-orbit MTF decreases with the increase in AOD and VZA and increases with the increase in ALT. Furthermore, a collaborative analysis of the main influencing factors of atmospheric scattering and absorption MTF indicates that, taking the PAN band of the GF-2 satellite as an example, the atmospheric MTF values are consistently below 0.7905. Among these, 90% of the data are less than 0.7520, with corresponding AOD conditions ranging from 0 to 0.08, a VZA ranging from 0 to 50°, and an ALT ranging from 0 to 5 km. The results can provide directional guidance for the selection of meteorological conditions, satellite attitude, and geographical location during satellite on-orbit testing, thereby enhancing the ability to accurately measure satellite MTF. Evaluating solar radiation distribution at the urban scale is crucial for optimizing the placement and size of solar installations and managing urban heat. This study introduces a method for predicting urban solar radiation using 2D mapping data, applying a Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) model to the city of Boston. Traditional solar radiation simulation methods, such as 3D modeling and satellite imagery, require complex and resource-intensive data inputs. In contrast, this research allows open-source 2D urban geographic information—such as building footprints, heights, and terrain—to predict solar radiation at various spatial scales (150 m, 300 m, and 500 m). The GAN model, using detailed 3D urban modeling and simulation results, trained paired datasets of geographic information and solar radiation heatmaps. It achieved high accuracy and resolution, with the 300 m scale model demonstrating the best performance (R2 = 0.864). The model's capability to generate high-resolution (2 m) solar radiation maps from simplified inputs demonstrates the potential of GANs for urban climate data prediction, offering a rapid and efficient alternative to traditional methods. Species-level phenology models are essential for predicting shifts in tree species under climate change. This study quantified phenological differences among dominant miombo tree species and modeled seasonal variability using climate variables. We used TIMESAT version 3.3 software and the Savitzky–Golay filter to derive phenology metrics from bi-monthly PlanetScope Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) data from 2017 to 2024. A repeated measures Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) assessed differences in phenology metrics between species, while a regression analysis modeled the Start of Season (SOS) and End of Season (EOS). The results show significant seasonal and species-level variations in phenology. Brachystegia spiciformis differed from other species in EOS, Length of Season (LOS), base value, and peak value. Surface solar radiation and skin temperature one month before SOS were key predictors of SOS, with an adjusted R-squared of 0.90 and a Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) of 13.47 for Brachystegia spiciformis. SOS also strongly predicted EOS, with an adjusted R-squared of 1 and an RMSE of 3.01 for Brachystegia spiciformis, indicating a shift in the growth cycle of tree species due to seasonal variability. Vegetation plays a vital role in connecting ecosystems and climate features. The biodiversity of vegetation is one of the most important features for evaluating ecosystems and it is becoming increasingly important with the threat of global warming. To clarify the effects of climate change on forest biodiversity in Northeast China, time-series NDVI data, meteorological data and land cover data from 2010 to 2021 were acquired, and the forest biodiversity of Northeast China was evaluated. The effect of climate change on forest biodiversity was analyzed, and the results indicated that the forest biodiversity features increased from west to east in Northeast China. There was also an increasing trend from 2010 to 2021, but the rate at which forest biodiversity was changing varied with different forest types of Northeast China, as different climatic factors had a different impact on forest biodiversity in different forest types. Average annual temperature, annual accumulated precipitation, CO2 fertilization and solar radiation were the main factors affecting forest biodiversity changing trends. This research indicated the potential impact of climate change on forest ecosystems, as it emphasized with evidence that climate change has a catalytic effect on forest biodiversity in Northeast China. Maize (Zea mays L.) has been shown to be sensitive to temperature deviations, influencing its yield potential. The development of new maize hybrids resilient to unfavourable weather is a desirable aim for crop breeders. In this paper, we showcase the development of a multimodal deep learning model using RGB images, phenotypic, and weather data under temporal effects to predict the yield potential of maize before or during anthesis and silking stages. The main objective of this study was to assess if the inclusion of historical weather data, maize growth captured through imagery, and important phenotypic traits would improve the predictive power of an established multimodal deep learning model. Evaluation of the model performance when training from scratch showed its ability to accurately predict ~89% of hybrids with high-yield potential and demonstrated enhanced explanatory power compared with previously published models. Shapley Additive explanations (SHAP) analysis indicated the top influential features include plant density, hybrid placement in the field, date to anthesis, parental line, temperature, humidity, and solar radiation. Including weather historical data was important for model performance, significantly enhancing the predictive and explanatory power of the model. For future research, the use of the model can move beyond maize yield prediction by fine-tuning the model on other crop data, serving as a potential decision-making tool for crop breeders to determine high-performing individuals from diverse crop types. Assessing changes of the mass balance in the Antarctic ice sheet in the context of global warming is a key focus in polar study. This study analyzed the spatiotemporal variation in the Antarctic ice sheet's mass balance, both as a whole and by individual basins, from 2003 to 2016 and from 2018 to 2022 using GRACE RL06 data published by the Center for Space Research (CSR) and ERA-5 meteorological data. It explored the lagged relationships between mass balance and precipitation, net surface solar radiation, and temperature, and applied the random forest method to examine the relative contributions of these factors to the ice sheet's mass balance within a nonlinear framework. The results showed that the mass loss rates of the Antarctic ice sheet during the study periods were −123.3 ± 6.2 Gt/a and −24.8 ± 52.1 Gt/a. The region with the greatest mass loss was the Amundsen Sea in West Antarctica (−488.8 ± 5.3 Gt/a and −447.9 ± 14.7 Gt/a), while Queen Maud Land experienced the most significant mass accumulation (44.9 ± 1.0 Gt/a and 30.0 ± 3.2 Gt/a). The main factors contributing to surface ablation of the Antarctic ice sheet are rising temperatures and increased surface net solar radiation, each showing a lag effect of 1 month and 2 months, respectively. With few measurement sites and a great need to validate satellite data to characterize the exchange of energy and carbon fluxes in tropical forest areas, quantified by the Net Ecosystem Exchange (NEE) and associated with phenological measurements, there is an increasing need for studies aimed at characterizing the Amazonian environment in its biosphere–atmosphere interaction, considering the accelerated deforestation in recent years. Using data from a flux measurement tower in the Caxiuanã-PA forest (2005–2008), climatic data, CO2 exchange estimated by eddy covariance, as well as Gross Primary Productivity (GPP) data and satellite vegetation indices (from MODIS), this work aimed to describe the site's energy, climatic and carbon cycle flux patterns, correlating its gross primary productivity with satellite vegetation indices. The results found were: (1) marked seasonality of climatic variables and energy flows, with evapotranspiration and air temperature on the site following the annual march of solar radiation and precipitation; (2) energy fluxes in phase and dependent on available energy; (3) the site as a carbon sink (−569.7 ± 444.9 gC m−2 year−1), with intensity varying according to the site's annual water availability; (4) low correlation between productivity data and vegetation indices, corroborating data in the literature on these variables in this type of ecosystem. The results show the importance of preserving this type of environment for the mitigation of global warming and the need to improve satellite estimates for this region. NDVI and EVI patterns follow radiative availability, as does LAI, but without direct capture related to GPP data, which correlates better with satellite data only in the months with the highest LAI. The results show the significant difference at a point measurement to a satellite interpolation, presenting how important preserving any type of environment is, even related to its size, for the global climate balance, and also the need to improve satellite estimates for smaller areas. Aerosols in the atmosphere significantly reduce the solar radiation reaching the Earth's surface through scattering and absorption processes. Knowing their properties becomes essential when we are interested in measuring solar radiation at a given location on the ground. The commonly used parameters that characterize their effects are the Aerosol Optical Depth τ , the Angstrom exponent α , and the Angstrom coefficient β. One method for estimating these parameters is to fit ground-based measurements of clear-sky direct solar radiation using a model on which it depends. However, the choice of model depends on its suitability to the atmospheric conditions of the site considered. Eleven empirical solar radiation models depending on α and β were thus chosen and tested with solar radiation measurements recorded between 2005 and 2014 in Tamanrasset in southern Algeria. The results obtained were compared to measurements made with the AERONET solar photometer on the same site during the same period. Among the 11 models chosen, the best performing ones are REST2 and CPCR2. They proved to be the best suited to estimate β with approximately the same RMSE of 0.05 and a correlation coefficient R with respect to AERONET of 0.95. The results also highlighted good performances of these models for the estimation of τ with an R M S E of 0.05 and 0.04, and an R of 0.95 and 0.96, respectively. The values of α obtained from the fitting of these models were, however, less good, with R around 0.38. Additional treatments based on a Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) were necessary to improve its estimation. They provided promising results showing a significant improvement in α estimates with R reaching 0.7 when referring to AERONET data. Furthermore, this parameter made it possible to identify different types of aerosols in Tamanrasset such as the presence of maritime, dust, and mixed aerosols representing, respectively, 31.21%, 3.25%, and 65.54%, proportions calculated over the entire period studied. The seasonal analysis showed that maritime aerosols are predominant in the winter in Tamanrasset but decrease with the seasons to reach a minimum in the summer (JJA). Dust aerosols appear in February and persist mainly in the spring (MAM) and summer (JJA), then disappear in September. These results are also consistent with those obtained from AERONET. By utilizing top-of-atmosphere radiation (TOAR) data from China's new generation of geostationary satellites (FY-4A and FY-4B) along with interpretable machine learning models, near-surface particulate matter concentrations in China were estimated, achieving hourly temporal resolution, 4 km spatial resolution, and 100% spatial coverage. First, the cloudless TOAR data were matched and modeled with the solar radiation products from the ERA5 dataset to construct and estimate a fully covered TOAR dataset under assumed clear-sky conditions, which increased coverage from 20–30% to 100%. Subsequently, this dataset was applied to estimate particulate matter. The analysis demonstrated that the fully covered TOAR dataset (R2 = 0.83) performed better than the original cloudless dataset (R2 = 0.76). Additionally, using feature importance scores and SHAP values, the impact of meteorological factors and air mass trajectories on the increase in PM10 and PM2.5 during dust events were investigated. The analysis of haze events indicated that the main meteorological factors driving changes in particulate matter included air pressure, temperature, and boundary layer height. The particulate matter concentration products obtained using fully covered TOAR data exhibit high coverage and high spatiotemporal resolution. Sea surface temperature (SST) is an important factor in the marine environment and has significant impacts on climate, ecology, and maritime activities. Most existing SST prediction methods consider the ocean as a uniform field and use a uniform grid to predict SST. However, the marine environment is a complex system, and factors such as solar radiation, differences in land and sea thermal properties, and ocean circulation lead to uneven spatial distributions of SSTs. We propose a non-uniform grid construction method based on an SST spatial gradient to encode SST data, as well as a Non-uniform Grid Graph Convolutional Network (NGGCN) model. The NGGCN consists of two spatiotemporal modules, each of which extracts spatial features from the GCN module, captures temporal correlations through the GRU module, and performs feature restoration and output results through the fully connected module. We selected data from the Yellow Sea and Bohai Sea to validate the effectiveness of the NGGCN in predicting SST at different time scales and prediction steps. Currently, spatial modeling is of particular relevance as it enables the understanding of the patterns and spatial variability of an event, the monitoring and prediction of the spatial behavior of a variable, the optimization of resources, and the evaluation of the impacts of a phenomenon of interest. Research carried out recently on variables related to solar energy budgets has been of special relevance due to its applications and developments in machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL). These algorithms are crucial to improve the efficiency, precision, and applicability of remote sensing, allowing greater decision making with more reliable and timely data. Thus, this work proposes a systematic and rigorous methodology for searching research articles about the latest advances and contributions related to the modeling of radiative energy budgets using novel techniques and algorithms in some of the most relevant international scientific databases (Scopus, ScienceDirect, ResearchGate). Search parameters were applied using tracking methods through various filters, specific classifiers, and Boolean operators. The results allowed for an analysis of search trends and citations in the last 5 years related to the topic of interest and the number of most relevant articles for this research, analyzed through specialized metrics and graphs. Additionally, this methodology was classified into four categories of importance for refined and articulated searches in this evaluation: (i) according to the applied interpolation methods, (ii) according to the remote sensors used, (iii) according to the applications in different fields of knowledge. As a relevant fact and with an essentially prospective purpose, a subchapter of this review was dedicated to the latest advances and developments applied to (iv) spatial modeling of terrestrial radiation through ML, this method being a tool that opens multiple alternatives for data processing and analysis in the development and achievement of objectives in the field of geotechnologies. A quantitative comparison was conducted on the predictive performance results between the classification/regression algorithms found in the studies explored in this review. The evaluation confirmed the existence of a persistent shortage of studies in recent years within the geotechnologies field, particularly concerning the comparison of spatial distribution modeling techniques developed and implemented through ML for incident solar and terrestrial radiation. Therefore, this work provides a synthesis and analysis of the most used and novel techniques in the modeling of solar energy budgets, their limitations, and biggest challenges. Solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) has been widely utilized to track the dynamics of gross primary productivity (GPP). It has been shown that the photochemical reflectance index (PRI), which may be utilized as an indicator of non-photochemical quenching (NPQ), improves SIF-based GPP estimation. However, the influence of weather conditions on GPP estimation using SIF and PRI has not been well explored. In this study, using an open-access dataset, we examined the impact of the clearness index (CI), which is associated with the proportional intensity of solar incident radiation and can represent weather conditions, on soybean GPP estimation using SIF and PRI. The midday PRI (xanthophyll de-epoxidation state) minus the early morning PRI (xanthophyll epoxidation state) yielded the corrected PRI (ΔPRI), which described the amplitude of xanthophyll pigment interconversion during the day. The observed canopy SIF at 760 nm ( S I F T O C _ 760 ) was downscaled to the broadband photosystem-level SIF for photosystem II ( S I F T O T _ F U L L _ P S I I ). Our results show that GPP can be accurately estimated using a multi-linear model with S I F T O T _ F U L L _ P S I I and ΔPRI. The ratio of GPP measured using the eddy covariance (EC) method ( G P P E C ) to GPP estimated using S I F T O T _ F U L L _ P S I I and ΔPRI exhibited a non-linear correlation with the CI along both the half-hourly (R2 = 0.21) and daily scales (R2 = 0.25). The GPP estimates using S I F T O T _ F U L L _ P S I I and ΔPRI were significantly improved by the addition of the CI (for the half-hourly data, R2 improved from 0.64 to 0.71 and the RMSE decreased from 8.28 to 7.42 μ mol•m−2•s−1; for the daily data, R2 improved from 0.71 to 0.81 and the RMSE decreased from 6.69 to 5.34 μ mol•m−2•s−1). This was confirmed by the validation results. In addition, the GPP estimated using the Random Forest method was also largely improved by considering the influences of the CI. Therefore, our findings demonstrate that GPP can be well estimated using S I F T O T _ F U L L _ P S I I and ΔPRI, and it can be significantly enhanced by accounting for the CI. Surface albedo measures the proportion of incoming solar radiation reflected by the Earth's surface. Accurate albedo retrieval from remote sensing data usually requires sufficient multi-angular observations to account for the surface reflectance anisotropy. However, most middle and high-resolution remote sensing satellites lack the capability to acquire sufficient multi-angular observations. Existing algorithms for retrieving surface albedo from single-direction reflectance typically rely on land cover types and vegetation indices to extract the corresponding prior knowledge of surface anisotropic reflectance from coarse-resolution Bidirectional Reflectance Distribution Function (BRDF) products. This study introduces an algorithm for retrieving albedo from directional reflectance based on a 3 × 3 BRDF archetype database established using the 2015 global time-series Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectro-radiometer (MODIS) BRDF product. For different directions, BRDF archetypes are applied to the simulated MODIS directional reflectance to retrieve albedo. By comparing the retrieved albedos with the MODIS albedo, the BRDF archetype that yields the smallest Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE) is selected as the prior BRDF for the direction. A lookup table (LUT) that contains the optimal BRDF archetypes for albedo retrieval under various observational geometries is established. The impact of the number of BRDF archetypes on the accuracy of albedo is analyzed according to the 2020 MODIS BRDF. The LUT is applied to the MODIS BRDF within specific BRDF archetype classes to validate its applicability under different anisotropic reflectance characteristics. The applicability of the LUT across different data types is further evaluated using simulated reflectance or real multi-angular measurements. The results indicate that (1) for any direction, a specific BRDF archetype can retrieve a high-accuracy albedo from directional reflectance. The optimal BRDF archetype varies with the observation direction. (2) Compared to the prior BRDF knowledge obtained through averaging method, the BRDF archetype LUT based on the 3 × 3 BRDF archetype database can more accurately retrieve the surface albedo. (3) The BRDF archetype LUT effectively eliminates the influence of surface anisotropic reflectance characteristics in albedo retrieval across different scales and types of data. The diurnal variation of surface incident solar radiation (Rs) has a significant impact on the Earth's climate. Satellite-retrieved Rs datasets display good spatial and temporal continuity compared with ground-based observations and, more importantly, have higher accuracy than reanalysis datasets. Facilitated by these advantages, many scholars have evaluated satellite-retrieved Rs, especially based on monthly and annual data. However, there is a lack of evaluation on an hourly scale, which has a profound impact on sea–air interactions, climate change, agriculture, and prognostic models. This study evaluates Himawari-8 and Clouds and the Earth's Radiant Energy System Synoptic (CERES)-retrieved hourly Rs data covering 60°S–60°N and 80°E–160°W based on ground-based observations from the Baseline Surface Radiation Network (BSRN). Hourly Rs were first standardized to remove the diurnal and seasonal cycles. Furthermore, the sensitivities of satellite-retrieved Rs products to clouds, aerosols, and land cover types were explored. It was found that Himawari-8-retrieved Rs was better than CERES-retrieved Rs at 8:00–16:00 and worse at 7:00 and 17:00. Both satellites performed better at continental sites than at island/coastal sites. The diurnal variations of statistical parameters of Himawari-8 satellite-retrieved Rs were stronger than those of CERES. Relatively larger MABs in the case of stratus and stratocumulus were exhibited for both hourly products. Smaller MAB values were found for CERES covered by deep convection and cumulus clouds and for Himawari-8 covered by deep convection and nimbostratus clouds. Larger MAB values at evergreen broadleaf forest sites and smaller MAB values at open shrubland sites were found for both products. In addition, Rs retrieved by Himawari-8 was more sensitive to AOD at 10:00–16:00, while that retrieved by CERES was more sensitive to COD at 9:00–15:00. The CERES product showed larger sensitivity to COD (at 9:00–15:00) and AOD (at 7:00–10:00) than Himawari-8. Dust storms play a crucial role in the climate system and the space environment of Mars, significantly impacting human exploration activities on the planet. The Martian dust storms exhibit significant regional, seasonal and interannual variations due to various controlling factors such as large-scale atmospheric circulation, varying solar radiation forcing, and Martial orbital and rotational motions and their coupling to the atmospheric dynamics. This paper aims to review current understandings of Martian dust storms. This paper begins by elucidating the basic properties of dust storms, their driving mechanisms, and their impacts on atmospheric dynamics, atmospheric electric property, space environment, topography, and Mars explorations. The paper then introduces the observation methods on different platforms, including orbiters and landers/rovers, along with datasets constructed based on these historical observations of Martian dust storms. Finally, we propose dust storm monitoring and predicting for the upcoming Chinese Tianwen-3 Mars sample return mission. As urbanization advances, the issue of urban heat islands (UHIs) grows increasingly serious, with UHIs gradually transitioning into regional urban heat islands. There is still a lack of research on the evolution and drivers of the thermal environment in urban agglomerations; therefore, in this study, we used trend analysis methods and spatial statistical analysis tools to investigate these issues in the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei (BTH) urban agglomeration. The results demonstrated the following: (1) The land surface temperature (LST) exhibited low fluctuation, while the relative land surface temperature (RLST) fluctuated significantly. In Zhangjiakou and Chengde, the LST and RLST evolution trends were complex, and the results differed between daytime and nighttime, as well as between the annual and seasonal scales. In other regions, the trends of LST and RLST evolution were more obvious. (2) During the daytime, the high UHI clusters centered on "BJ–TJ–LF" and "SJZ–XT–HD" formed gradually; during the nighttime, the high UHI clusters were mainly observed in built-up areas. The distribution range and direction of UHIs showed greater degrees of evolution during the daytime in summer. (3) The total UHI area showed an increasing trend, and the intensity of heat stress suffered by the BTH agglomeration was increasing. (4) In BTH and Hebei, aerosol optical depth, surface solar radiation, population density, and gross domestic product were the dominant factors influencing UHIs; moreover, in Beijing and Tianjin, all factors showed an basically equal impact. The methodology and findings of this study hold significant implications for guiding urban construction, optimizing urban structure, and improving urban thermal comfort in the BTH urban agglomeration. Accurate measurement and estimation of forest carbon sinks and fluxes are essential for developing effective national and global climate strategies aimed at reducing atmospheric carbon concentrations and mitigating climate change. Various errors arise during forest monitoring, especially measurement instability due to seasonal variations, which require to be adequately addressed in forest ecosystem research and applications. Seasonal fluctuations in temperature, precipitation, aerosols, and solar radiation can significantly impact the physical observations of mapping equipment or platforms, thereby reducing the data's accuracy. Here, we review the technologies and equipment used for monitoring forest carbon sinks and carbon fluxes across different remote sensing platforms, including ground-based, airborne, and spaceborne remote sensing. We further investigate the uncertainties introduced by seasonal variations to the observing equipment, compare the strengths and weaknesses of various monitoring technologies, and propose the corresponding solutions and recommendations. We aim to gain a comprehensive understanding of the impact of seasonal variations on the accuracy of forest map data, thereby improving the accuracy of forest carbon sinks and fluxes. Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) are a necessity for modelling many large-scale environmental processes. In this study, we investigate the potential of data from two spaceborne lidar altimetry missions, ICESat-2 and GEDI—with respect to their vertical accuracies and planimetric data collection patterns—as sources for rasterisation towards creating global DEMs. We validate the terrain measurements of both missions against airborne lidar datasets over three areas in the Netherlands, Switzerland, and New Zealand and differentiate them using land-cover classes. For our experiments, we use five years of ICESat-2 ATL03 data and four years of GEDI L2A data for a total of 252 million measurements. The datasets are filtered using parameter flags provided by the higher-level products ICESat-2 ATL08 and GEDI L3A. For all areas and land-cover classes combined, ICESat-2 achieves a bias of −0.11 m, an MAE of 0.43 m, and an RMSE of 0.93 m. From our experiments, we find that GEDI is less accurate, with a bias of 0.09 m, an MAE of 0.98 m, and an RMSE of 2.96 m. Measurements in open land-cover classes, such as "Cropland" and "Grassland", result in the best accuracy for both missions. We also find that the slope of the terrain has a major influence on vertical accuracy, more so for GEDI than ICESat-2 because of its larger horizontal geolocation error. In contrast, we find little effect of either beam power or background solar radiation, nor do we find noticeable seasonal effects on accuracy. Furthermore, we investigate the spatial coverage of ICESat-2 and GEDI by deriving a DEM at different horizontal resolutions and latitudes. GEDI has higher spatial coverage than ICESat-2 at lower latitudes due to its beam pattern and lower inclination angle, and a derived DEM can achieve a resolution of 500 m. ICESat-2 only reaches a DEM resolution of 700 m at the equator, but it increases to almost 200 m at higher latitudes. When combined, a 500 m resolution lidar-based DEM can be achieved globally. Our results indicate that both ICESat-2 and GEDI enable accurate terrain measurements anywhere in the world. Rooftop solar photovoltaics can significantly contribute to global energy transitions by providing clean, decentralized energy without the need for new land, thereby avoiding land-use conflicts. It serves as a valuable complement to other renewable-energy sources and is expected to play a crucial role in future electricity systems. Due to the spatiotemporal variability in the solar radiation on roof surfaces, it is essential to determine the potentials of the rooftop photovoltaics and its variations in specific regions. In Germany, this potential was assessed in 5 km × 5 km zones, as well as at the federal-state and national levels. High-quality satellite and reanalysis data were used to determine the power output of the solar photovoltaics. Additionally, high-resolution (2 m × 2 m) European Settlement Map data, calibrated with solar cadastre data, were utilized to evaluate different scenarios. The results show that the potential is concentrated in larger urban areas and the southwestern part of Germany due to the availability of rooftop space and solar radiation. Overall, the national rooftop areas are substantial across all scenarios, ranging from 2100 to 4500 km2. The applied methods and scenarios provide a straightforward way to reveal the spatiotemporal variability and define realistic ranges of the solar photovoltaic potential without requiring detailed information about each building. However, assessing the rooftop photovoltaic potential remains challenging and uncertain due to the lack of large-scale, high-resolution data on building characteristics and the complexity of the solar radiation distribution in urban environments. Doñana National Park is located in the southwest of the Iberian Peninsula, where water scarcity is recurrent, together with a high heterogeneity in species and ecosystems. Monitoring carbon assimilation is essential to improve knowledge of global change in natural vegetation cover. In this work, a light use efficiency (LUE) model was applied to estimate gross primary production (GPP) in two ecosystems of Doñana, xeric shrub (drought resistant) and seasonal marsh (with grasslands dependent on water hydroperiod) and validated with in situ data from eddy covariance (EC) towers installed in both ecosystems. The model was applied in two ways: (1) using the fraction of absorbed photosynthetically active radiation (FAPAR) from Sentinel-2 and meteorological data from reanalysis (ERA5), and (2) using Sentinel-2 FAPAR, reanalysis solar radiation (ERA5) and the Sentinel-2 land surface water index (LSWI). In both cases and for both ecosystems, the error values are acceptable (below 1 gC/m2) and in both ecosystems the model using the LSWI gave better results (R2 of 0.8 in marshes and 0.51 in xeric shrubs). Net precipitation (NP) is the primary source of soil water essential for the functioning of vegetated ecosystems. By quantifying NP as the difference between gross precipitation and canopy interception evaporation, this study examined the dynamics of NP in China from 2001 to 2020 and the contribution of environmental factors to NP variations was investigated. The findings revealed a multiyear mean NP of 674.62 mm, showcasing a 2.93 mm/yr increase. The spatiotemporal variations in NP were mainly attributed to a remarkable increase in precipitation rather than canopy interception. Notably, climate (temperature, wind speed, surface solar radiation downward and vapor pressure deficit) and vegetation factors (leaf area index and net primary productivity) played a dominant role in NP in 61.53% and 15.39% of China, respectively. The dominant factors contributing to NP changes were vapor pressure deficit (mean contribution rate: −43.68%), temperature (mean contribution rate: 11.69%), and leaf area index (mean contribution rate: 2.13%). The vapor pressure deficit negatively exerts a negative influence on the southern and eastern regions. Temperature and leaf area index have the greatest effect on the northeastern and southwestern regions, respectively. Surface solar radiation, as a primary energy source, plays a pivotal role in governing land–atmosphere interactions, thereby influencing radiative, hydrological, and land surface dynamics. Ground-based instrumentation and satellite-based observations represent two fundamental methodologies for acquiring solar radiation information. While ground-based measurements are often limited in availability, high-temporal- and spatial-resolution, gridded satellite-retrieved solar radiation products have been extensively utilized in solar radiation-related studies, despite their inherent uncertainties in accuracy. In this study, we conducted an evaluation of the accuracy of two high-resolution satellite products, namely Himawari-8 (H8) and Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), utilizing data from a newly established solar radiation observation system at the Beijing Normal University (BNU) station in Beijing since 2017. The newly acquired measurements facilitated the generation of a firsthand solar radiation dataset comprising three components: Global Horizontal Irradiance (GHI), Direct Normal Irradiance (DNI), and Diffuse Horizontal Irradiance (DHI). Rigorous quality control procedures were applied to the raw minute-level observation data, including tests for missing data, the determination of possible physical limits, the identification of solar tracker malfunctions, and comparison tests (GHI should be equivalent to the sum of DHI and the vertical component of the DNI). Subsequently, accurate minute-level solar radiation observations were obtained spanning from 1 January 2020 to 22 March 2022. The evaluation of H8 and MODIS satellite products against ground-based GHI observations revealed strong correlations with R-squared (R2) values of 0.89 and 0.81, respectively. However, both satellite products exhibited a tendency to overestimate solar radiation, with H8 overestimating by approximately 21.05% and MODIS products by 7.11%. Additionally, solar zenith angles emerged as a factor influencing the accuracy of satellite products. This dataset serves as crucial support for investigations of surface solar radiation variation mechanisms, future energy utilization prospects, environmental conservation efforts, and related studies in urban areas such as Beijing. Evapotranspiration (ET) accounts for over half of the moisture source of Asian monsoon rainfall, which has been significantly altered by anthropogenic forcings. However, how individual anthropogenic forcing affects the ET over monsoonal Asia is still elusive. In this study, we found a significant decline in ET over the Asian monsoon region during the period of 1950–2014 in Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) models. The attribution analysis suggests that anthropogenic aerosol forcing is the primary cause of the weakening in ET in the historical simulation, while it is only partially compensated by the strengthening effect from GHGs, although GHGs are the dominant forcings for surface temperature increase. The physical mechanisms responsible for ET changes are different between aerosol and GHG forcings. The increase in aerosol emissions enhances the reflection and scattering of the downward solar radiation, which decreases the net surface irradiance for ET. GHGs, on the one hand, increase the moisture capability of the atmosphere and, thus, the ensuing rainfall; on the other hand, they increase the ascending motion over the Indian subcontinent, leading to an increase in rainfall. Both processes are beneficial for an ET increase. In this study, we present comprehensive climatologies of effective ultraviolet (UV) quantities and photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) over Cyprus for the period 2004 to 2023, leveraging the synergy of earth observation (EO) data and radiative transfer model simulations. The EO dataset, encompassing satellite and reanalysis data for aerosols, total ozone column, and water vapor, alongside cloud modification factors, captures the nuanced dynamics of Cyprus's atmospheric conditions. With a temporal resolution of 15 min and a spatial of 0.05° × 0.05°, these climatologies undergo rigorous validation against established satellite datasets and are further evaluated through comparisons with ground-based global horizontal irradiance measurements provided by the Meteorological Office of Cyprus. This dual-method validation approach not only underscores the models' accuracy but also highlights its proficiency in capturing intra-daily cloud coverage variations. Our analysis extends to investigating the long-term trends of these solar radiation quantities, examining their interplay with changes in cloud attenuation, aerosol optical depth (AOD), and total ozone column (TOC). Significant decreasing trends in the noon ultraviolet index (UVI), ranging from −2 to −4% per decade, have been found in autumn, especially marked in the island's northeastern part, mainly originating from the (significant) positive trends in TOC. The significant decreasing trends in TOC, of −2 to −3% per decade, which were found in spring, do not result in correspondingly significant positive trends in the noon UVI since variations in cloudiness and aerosols also have a strong impact on the UVI in this season. The seasonal trends in the day light integral (DLI) were generally not significant. These insights provide a valuable foundation for further studies aimed at developing public health strategies and enhancing agricultural productivity, highlighting the critical importance of accurate and high-resolution climatological data. Natural events (floods, earthquakes, landslides, etc.) may significantly damage archaeological sites, and therefore reducing their exposure to such events represents a priority for protective and conservation activities. The archaeological Sanctuary of Pachacamac (SP; 2nd–16th century CE; Peru) covers an area of 465 hectares and includes roads, enclosures, huacas with ramps, temples, and palaces located along the central coast of Peru. This area is affected by heavy rain and winds related to the El Niño–Southern Oscillation and to intense solar radiation. We use a 30 cm resolution Digital Surface Model obtained from orthophotogrammetric data and perform a morphometric analysis using geomorphological, hydrological, and climatic quantitative parameters. Our aim is to identify the zones exposed to water flow or stagnation during rainfall, as well as the exposure to winds and solar radiation. The calculated parameters are subsequently processed with an object-based image analysis approach to identify areas with higher climate exposure. We show that the SP architectural layout controls the exposure to water stagnation or flow in the form of rainfall, whereas exposure to wind and solar radiation mainly depends on the topography of an area (e.g., the presence of hills and plains). The constant inherent optical properties (IOPs) for sea ice currently applied in sea ice models do not realistically represent the dividing of shortwave radiative fluxes in sea ice and the ocean below it. Here we implement a parameterization of variable IOPs based on ice microstructures in the Los Alamos sea ice model, version 6.0 (CICE6) and investigate its effects on the simulation of the dividing of shortwave radiation and sea ice in the Arctic. Our sensitivity experiments indicate that variable IOP parameterization results in strong seasonal variation for the IOP parameters, typically reaching the seasonal maximum in the boreal summer. With such large differences, variable IOP parameterization leads to increased absorbed solar radiation at the surface and in the interior of Arctic sea ice relative to constant IOPs, up to ~3 W/m2, but decreased solar radiation penetrating into the ocean, up to ~5–6 W/m2. The changes in the dividing of shortwave fluxes in sea ice and the ocean below it induced by the variable IOPs have significant influence on Arctic sea ice thickness by modulating surface and bottom melting and frazil ice formation (increasing surface melting by ~16% and reducing bottom melting by ~11% in summer). Xizang boasts a vast and geographically complex landscape with an average elevation surpassing 4000 m. Understanding the spatiotemporal distribution of surface solar radiation is indispensable for simulating surface processes, studying climate change, and designing photovoltaic power generation and solar heating systems. A multi-dimensional, long-term, spatial, and temporal investigation of solar radiation in Xizang was conducted using three unique datasets, including the difference in surface solar radiation (SSR) between high-resolution satellite and ground station data, the annual and monthly distribution of SSR, and the interannual–monthly–daily variation and the coefficient of hourly variability. Combined with high-resolution elevation data, a strong linear correlation was shown between the radiation and the elevation below 4000 m. Furthermore, analysis reveals greater differences in data between east and west compared to the center, as well as between summer and winter seasons. SSR levels vary in steps, reaching the highest from Ngari to Shigatse and the lowest in a U-shaped area formed by southeastern Shannan and southern Nyingchi. In June, high monthly SSR coverage was the highest of the year. Since 1960, the annual mean SSR has generally exhibited a declining trend, displaying distinctive trends across various seasons and datasets. Owing to intricate meteorological factors, some regions exhibited double peaks in monthly SSR. Red needle cast (RNC), mainly caused by Phytophthora pluvialis, is a very damaging disease of the widely grown species radiata pine within New Zealand. Using a combination of satellite imagery and weather data, a novel methodology was developed to pre-visually predict the incidence of RNC on radiata pine within the Gisborne region of New Zealand over a five-year period from 2019 to 2023. Sentinel-2 satellite imagery was used to classify areas within the region as being disease-free or showing RNC expression from the difference in the red/green index (R/Gdiff) during a disease-free time of the year and the time of maximum disease expression in the upper canopy (early spring–September). Within these two classes, 1976 plots were extracted, and a classification model was used to predict disease incidence from mean monthly weather data for key variables during the 11 months prior to disease expression. The variables in the final random forest model included solar radiation, relative humidity, rainfall, and the maximum air temperature recorded during mid–late summer, which provided a pre-visual prediction of the disease 7–8 months before its peak expression. Using a hold-out test dataset, the final random forest model had an accuracy of 89% and an F1 score of 0.89. Gross primary productivity (GPP) is a reliable measure of the carbon sink potential of terrestrial ecosystems and is an essential element of terrestrial carbon cycle research. This study employs the diffuse fraction-based two-leaf light-use efficiency (DTEC) model to imitate China's monthly GPP from 2001 to 2020. We studied the trend of GPP, investigated its relationship with climatic factors, and separated the contributions of climate change and human activities. The findings showed that the DTEC model was widely applicable in China. During the study period, China's average GPP increased significantly, by 9.77 g C m−2 yr−1 (p < 0.001). The detrimental effect of aerosol optical depth (AOD) on GPP was more widespread than that of total precipitation, temperature, and solar radiation. Areas that benefited from AOD, such as Northwest China, experienced significant increases in GPP. Climate change and human activities had a primary and positive influence on GPP during the study period, accounting for 28% and 72% of the increase, respectively. Human activities, particularly ecological restoration projects and the adoption of advanced agricultural technologies, played a significant role in China's GPP growth. China's afforestation plan was particularly notable, with the GPP increasing in afforestation areas at a rate greater than 10 g C m−2 yr−1. This study investigates the long-term stability of the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (S-NPP) Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) moderate-resolution Thermal Emissive Bands (M TEBs; M12–M16) covering a period from February 2012 to August 2020. It also assesses inter-sensor consistency of the VIIRS M TEBs among three satellites (S-NPP, NOAA-20, and NOAA-21) over eight months spanning from 18 March to 30 November 2023. The field of interest is limited to the ocean surface between 60°S and 60°N, specifically under clear-sky conditions. Taking radiative transfer modeling (RTM) as the transfer reference, we employed the Community Radiative Transfer Model (CRTM) to simulate VIIRS TEB brightness temperature (BTs), incorporating European Centre for Medium-range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) reanalysis data as inputs. Our results reveal two key findings. Firstly, the reprocessed S-NPP VIIRS TEBs exhibit a robust long-term stability, as demonstrated through analyses of the observation minus background BT differences (O-B ∆BTs) between VIIRS measurements (O) and CRTM simulations (B). The drifts of the O-B BT differences are consistently less than 0.102 K/Decade across all S-NPP VIIRS M TEB bands. Notably, observations from VIIRS M14 and M16 stand out with drifts well within 0.04 K/Decade, reinforcing their exceptional reliability for climate change studies. Secondly, excellent inter-sensor consistency among these three VIIRS instruments is confirmed through the double-difference analysis method (O-O). This method relies on the O-B BT differences obtained from daily VIIRS operational data. The mean inter-VIIRS O-O BT differences remain within 0.08 K for all M TEBs, except for M13. Even in the case of M13, the O-O BT differences between NOAA-21 and NOAA-20/S-NPP have values of 0.312 K and 0.234 K, respectively, which are comparable to the 0.2 K difference observed in overlapping TEBs between VIIRS and MODIS. These disparities are primarily attributed to the significant differences in the Spectral Response Function (SRF) of NOAA-21 compared to NOAA-20 and S-NPP. It is also found that the remnant scene temperature dependence of NOAA-21 versus NOAA-20/S-NPP M13 O-O BT difference after accounting for SRF difference is ~0.0033 K/K, an order of magnitude smaller than the corresponding rates in the direct BT comparisons between NOAA-21 and NOAA-20/S-NPP. Our study confirms the versatility and effectiveness of the RTM-based TEB quality evaluation method in assessing long-term sensor stability and inter-sensor consistency. The double-difference approach effectively mitigates uncertainties and biases inherent to CRTM simulations, establishing a robust mechanism for assessing inter-sensor consistency. Moreover, for M12 operating as a shortwave infrared channel, it is found that the daytime O-B BT differences of S-NPP M12 exhibit greater seasonal variability compared to the nighttime data, which can be attributed to the idea that M12 radiance is affected by the reflected solar radiation during the daytime. Furthermore, in this study, we've also characterized the spatial distributions of inter-VIIRS BT differences, identifying variations among VIIRS M TEBs, as well as spatial discrepancies between the daytime and nighttime data. Aerosol optical depth (AOD) constitutes a key parameter of aerosols, providing vital information for quantifying the aerosol burden and air quality at global and regional levels. This study demonstrates a machine learning strategy for retrieving AOD under cloud-free conditions based on the synergy of machine learning algorithms (MLAs) and ground-based solar irradiance data. The performance of the proposed methodology was investigated by applying different components of solar irradiance. In particular, the use of direct instead of global irradiance as a model feature led to better performance. The MLA-based AODs were compared to reference AERONET retrievals, which encompassed RMSE values between 0.01 and 0.15, regardless of the underlying climate and aerosol environments. Among the MLAs, artificial neural networks outperformed the other algorithms in terms of RMSE at 54% of the measurement sites. The overall performance of MLA-based AODs against AERONET revealed a high coefficient of determination (R2 = 0.97), MAE of 0.01, and RMSE of 0.02. Compared to satellite (MODIS) and reanalysis (MERRA-2 and CAMSRA) data, the MLA-AOD retrievals revealed the highest accuracy at all stations. The selection of a certain location for the placement of a solar facility depends on the solar resource availability, which is generally assessed though exceedance probabilities. However, the choice of the specific exceedance probability is arbitrary and the assessment will be different depending on the choice taken. Furthermore, exceedance probabilities do not reflect seasonal variability, which affects radiation availability. Therefore, in this work we present a new index, the suitability index based on Theil (SIT), which allows us to assess with a single value the degree of suitability of a site for installing a solar plant. Obtained from the Theil index, it considers the availability of the resource and its seasonal variability, based as it is on the proportion of the given radiation in each month. As we will see, the new index is clearly more sensitive to the amount of radiation expressed in terms of the 50th percentile than to the variability, as given by the interquartile range. This is a quality to be pondered since scarcity of radiation will always be a greater disadvantage for a solar installation than high variability. The results obtained in the study, grounded in the application of satellite images, show that the index adequately reflects the radiation characteristics in the study area. The territory is broken into areas associated with such characteristics through a cluster analysis, so that geographical and economic elements can be considered when choosing the final location for a solar installation. The aim of this work is to provide a full description of how air temperature and solar radiation induce changes in the land cover over an Antarctic site. We use shortwave broadband albedo (albedo integrated in the range 300–3000 nm) from a spaceborne sensor and from field surveys to calculate the monthly relative abundance of landscape units. Field albedo data were collected in January 2019 using a portable albedometer over seven landscape units: clean fresh snow; clean old snow; rugged landscape composed of dirty snow with disperse pyroclasts and rocky outcrops; dirty snow; stripes of bare soil and snow; shallow snow with small bare soil patches; and bare soil. The MODIS MCD43A3 daily albedo products were downloaded using the Google Earth Engine API from the 2000–2001 season to the 2020–2021 season. Each landscape unit was characterized by an albedo normal distribution. The monthly relative abundances of the landscape units were calculated by fitting a linear combination of the normal distributions to a histogram of the MODIS monthly mean albedo. The monthly relative abundance of the landscape unit consisting of rugged landscape composed of dirty snow with dispersed clasts and small rocky outcrops exhibits a high positive linear correlation with the monthly mean albedo (R2 = 0.87) and a high negative linear correlation with the monthly mean air temperature (R2 = 0.69). The increase in the solar radiation energy flux from September to December coincides with the decrease in the relative abundance of the landscape unit composed of dirty snow with dispersed clasts and small rocky outcrops. We propose a mechanism to describe the evolution of the landscape: uncovered pyroclasts act as melting centers favoring the melting of surrounding snow. Ash does not play a decisive role in the melting of the snow. The results also explain the observed decrease in the thaw depth of the permafrost on the island in the period 2006–2014, resulting from an increase in the snow cover over the whole island. This paper proposes a method for forecasting surface solar irradiance (SSI), the most critical factor in solar photovoltaic (PV) power generation. The proposed method uses 16-channel data obtained by the GEO-KOMPSAT-2A (GK2A) satellite of South Korea as the main data for SSI forecasting. To determine feature variables related to SSI from the 16-channel data, the differences and ratios between the channels were utilized. Additionally, to consider the fundamental characteristics of SSI originating from the sun, solar geometry parameters, such as solar declination (SD), solar elevation angle (SEA), and extraterrestrial solar radiation (ESR), were used. Deep learning-based feature selection (Deep-FS) was employed to select appropriate feature variables that affect SSI from various feature variables extracted from the 16-channel data. Lastly, spatio-temporal deep learning models, such as convolutional neural network–long short-term memory (CNN-LSTM) and CNN–gated recurrent unit (CNN-GRU), which can simultaneously reflect temporal and spatial characteristics, were used to forecast SSI. Previous studies have shown that climate change has significant cumulative effects on vegetation growth. However, there remains a gap in understanding the characteristics of cumulative climatic effects on different vegetation types and the underlying driving mechanisms. In this study, using the normalized difference vegetation index data from 1982 to 2015, along with accumulated temperature, precipitation, and solar radiation data, we quantitatively investigated the intra-annual cumulative effects of climatic factors on global vegetation biomes across climatic zones. We also explored the underlying driving mechanisms. The results indicate that precipitation has a longer intra-annual cumulative effect on vegetation, with effects lasting up to 12 months for large percentages of most vegetation biomes. The cumulative effect of solar radiation is mostly concentrated within 0–6 months. Temperature has a shorter cumulative effect, with no significant cumulative effect of temperature on large percentages of tree-type vegetation. Compared to other vegetation types, evergreen broadleaf forests, close shrublands, open shrublands, savannas, and woody savannas exhibit more complex cumulative climatic effects. Each vegetation type shows a weak-to-moderate correlation with accumulated precipitation while exhibiting strong-to-extremely-strong positive correlations with accumulated temperature and accumulated solar radiation. The climate-induced regulations of water, heat, and nutrient, as well as the intrinsic mechanisms of vegetation's tolerance, resistance, and adaptation to climate change, account for the significant heterogeneity of cumulative climatic effects across vegetation biomes in different climatic zones. This study contributes to enriching the theoretical understanding of the relationship between vegetation growth and climate change. The assessment of solar resources involves the utilization of physical or satellite models for the determination of solar radiation on the Earth's surface. However, a critical aspect of model validation necessitates comparisons against ground-truth measurements obtained from surface radiometers. Given the inherent challenges associated with establishing and maintaining solar radiation measurement networks—characterized by their expense, logistical complexities, limited station availability and the imperative consideration of climatic criteria for siting—countries endowed with substantial climatic diversity face difficulties in station placement. In this investigation, the measurements of annual solar irradiation, from meteorological stations of the National Weather Service in Mexico, were compared in different regions clustered by similarities in altitude, TL Linke, albedo and cloudiness index derived from satellite images; the main objective is to find the best ratio of annual solar irradiation in a set of clusters. Employing machine learning algorithms, this research endeavors to identify the most suitable model for predicting the ratio of annual solar irradiation and to determine the optimal number of clusters. The findings underscore the efficacy of the L-method as a robust technique for regionalization. Notably, the cloudiness index emerges as a pivotal feature, with the Random Forest algorithm yielding superior performance with a R2 score of 0.94, clustering Mexico into 17 regions. The Tibet Plateau is known as the "third pole" of the world, and its environmental change profoundly impacts East Asia and even the global climate. HDO is the stable isotope of water vapor, which acts as an ideal tracer for studying the water cycle, and which is commonly used for atmospheric circulation and climatic studies. To monitor the water vapor isotopic abundance in the Tibetan Plateau, a portable laser heterodyne radiometer was operated in Golmud in August 2019. The radiometer utilizes a narrow-linewidth 3.66 μm distributed feedback interband cascade laser as the local oscillator, the heterodyne module is been optimized and the radiometer performs with high resolution and stability in obtaining spectral data. Furthermore, the absorption spectra of atmospheric HDO and H2O are obtained, and the retrieval method for water vapor isotopic abundance is discussed. The optimal estimation method is adopted to retrieve the density of HDO and H2O. The average column density of H2O was 1.22 g/cm2, and the HDO/H2O ratio in Golmud was 178 ± 15 × 10−6 during the observation. For a better understanding of the retrieval, the retrieval errors are analyzed and compared. The results indicate that the smoothing error is significantly higher than the measurement error in this work. The backward trajectory analysis of atmospheric transport is used to investigate the relationship between water vapor density and atmospheric motion. The aim of this study was to develop methods for determining the most significant contrasts in satellite ocean color data arising in the presence of a submesoscale eddy structure, as well as to determine the corresponding depths of the upper layer of the sea where these contrasts are formed. The research was carried out on the example of the chain of submesoscale eddies identified in the Tumen River water transport area in the Japan/East Sea. MODIS Aqua/Terra satellite data of the remotely sensed reflectance (Rrs) and Rrs band ratio at various wavelengths, chlorophyll-a concentration, and, for comparison, sea surface temperature (sst) were analyzed. Additionally, the results of ship surveys in September 2009 were used to study the influence of eddy vertical structure on the obtained remote characteristics. The best characteristic for detecting the studied eddies in satellite ocean color data was the MODIS chlor_a standard product, which is an estimate of chlorophyll-a concentration obtained by a combination of the three-band reflectance difference algorithm (CI) for low concentrations and the band-ratio algorithm (OCx) for high concentrations. At the same time, the weakest contrasts were in sst data due to similar water heating inside and outside the eddies. The best eddy contrast-to-noise ratio according to Rrs spectra is achieved at 547 nm in the spectral region of seawater with maximum transparency and low relative errors of measurements. The Rrs at 678 nm and associated products may be a significant characteristic for eddy detection if there are many phytoplankton in the eddy waters. The maximum depth of the remotely sensed contrast formation of the considered eddy vertical structure was ~6 m, which was significantly less than the maximum spectral penetration depth of solar radiation for remote sensing, which was in the 14–17 m range. The results obtained can be used to determine the characteristics that provide the best contrast for detecting eddy structures in remotely sensed reflectance data and to improve the interpretation of remote spectral ocean color data in the areas of eddies activity. As part of the Earth Climate Observatory space mission concept for the direct observation from space of the Earth Energy Imbalance, we propose an advanced camera suite for the high-resolution observation of the Total Outgoing Radiation of the Earth. For the observation of the Reflected Solar Radiation, we propose the use of two multispectral cameras covering the range from 400 to 950 nm, with a nadir resolution of 1.7 km, combined with a high-resolution RGB camera, with a nadir resolution of 0.57 km. For the observation of the Outgoing Longwave Radiation, we propose the use of six microbolometer cameras, with each a spectral bandwidth of 1 μm in the range from 8 to 14 μm, with a nadir resolution of 2.2 km. The presence of shadows is one of the main disadvantages of photovoltaic solar panel installations in urban environments. This article analyses their effect on solar installations performed on urban elements where the use of solar energy can be considered novel: bus shelters. For this purpose, the PVGIS tool is used in combination with a new methodology for the extraction of the shadow horizon profile from LiDAR point clouds. The results show a 29.90% and 37% reduction of calculated solar radiation using horizon profiles derived from LiDAR point clouds of 0.5 pts/m2 and 1 pt/m2, respectively, versus no horizon profile. By taking shading into account, thanks to this study it is possible to make a more realistic prediction of the use of the electrical energy generated by the sun to cover urban energy consumption in bus shelters. Results show that the energy surplus produced overall allows these elements to be converted into charging points for light electric vehicles, allowing up to 35 units per day/bus shelter to be charged. The use of bus shelters as a place to generate clean energy through solar energy and charge light vehicles makes it possible to move towards sustainable and environmentally friendly cities. Due to atmospheric scattering, solar radiation, and other factors, the Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation Satellite-2 (ICESat-2) product data suffer from a substantial amount of background noise. This poses a significant challenge when attempting to directly utilize the raw data. Consequently, data denoising becomes an indispensable preprocessing step for its subsequent applications, such as the extraction of forest structure parameters and ground elevation data. While the Density-Based Spatial Clustering of Applications with Noise (DBSCAN) algorithm is currently the most widely used method, it remains susceptible to complexities arising from terrain, low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), and input parameter variations. This paper proposes an efficient Multi-Level Auto-Adaptive Noise Filter (MLANF) algorithm based on photon spatial density. Its purpose is to extract signal photons from ICESat-2 terrestrial data of different ground cover types. The algorithm follows a two-step process. Firstly, random noise photons are removed from the upper and lower regions of the signal photons through a coarse denoising process. Secondly, in the fine denoising step, the K-Nearest Neighbor (KNN) algorithm selects the K photons to calculate the slope along the track. The calculated slope is then used to rotate the direction of the searching neighborhood in the DBSCAN algorithm. The proposed algorithm was tested in eight datasets of four surface types: forest, grassland, desert, and urban, and the extraction results were compared with those from the ATL08 datasets and the DBSCAN algorithm. Based on the ground-truth signal photons obtained by visual inspection, the classification precision, recall, and F-score of our algorithm, as well as two other algorithms, were calculated. The MLANF could achieve a good balance between classification precision (97.48% averaged) and recall (97.96% averaged). Its F-score (97.69% averaged) was higher than that of the other two methods. This demonstrates that the MLANF algorithm successfully obtained a continuous surface profile from ICESat-2 datasets with different surface cover types, significant topographic relief, and low SNR. Sea ice regulates the overall energy exchange and radiation budget of the Arctic region, and understanding this relationship requires an accurate determination of snow depth. However, methods for deriving snow depth have a large error through the annual winter and early spring periods due to the potential complexity of surface melting during early summer. In this study, we explore the potential of retrieving snow depth during the early summer using optical satellite imagery of the sea-ice cover. Measurements using VIS/IR (visible and infrared) usually feature much higher spatial resolution than L-band satellite data and can provide additional surface melting and leads information; in addition, considering the snow grain size–snow surface temperature interaction, there is co-variability between the observed sea-ice surface broadband albedo using an optical satellite sensor, the sea-ice surface temperature, and the retrieval target of snow depth on the spatial scale of optical imagery samples. We applied a surface classification procedure to optical satellite imagery and introduce an approach to derive snow depth from optical satellite imagery and ice surface temperature data using two solar radiation transfer models: the Delta-Eddington solar radiation model, which is the shortwave radiative scheme of the Los Alamos sea-ice model, and a simplified snow albedo scheme, which is tuned to the observational data of buoys. The snow depth was inversed from the model simulation results using a lookup-table-based method. For comparison with the observational data, using the Delta-Eddington solar radiation model, about 55% of the differences are below 5 cm, and thicker snowpack has a larger bias; using the simplified snow albedo scheme, a mean difference of 4.1 cm between retrieval and measurements was found, with 93% of the differences being smaller than 5 cm. In urban thermal environment research (UTE), urban shadows formed by buildings and trees contribute to significant variations in thermal conditions, particularly during the mid-day period. This study investigated the multi-scale effects of indicators, including urban shadows, on UTE, focusing specifically on the mid-day hours. It integrated field temperature measurements and drone aerial data from multiple city blocks. Considering both urban shadows and direct solar radiation, a linear mixed-effects model was employed to study the multi-scale effects of urban morphological indicators. Results showed that: (1) UTE is a multi-scale, multi-factor phenomenon, with thermal effects manifesting at specific scales. Under shadow conditions, smaller scales (10–20 m) of landscape heterogeneity and larger scales (300–400 m) of landscape consistency better explained temperature variations mid-day. Conversely, under direct sunlight, temperature was primarily influenced by larger scales (150–300 m). (2) Trees significantly reduced temperature; 100% tree canopy cover within a 10-m radius reduced air temperatures by approximately 2 °C mid-day. However, there is no significant correlation between temperature and green spaces. (3) Building area and height were significantly correlated with temperature. Specifically, an increase in building area beyond 150 m, especially within a 300-m radius, leads to higher temperatures. Conversely, building height within a 10–20 m range exhibits significant cooling effects.
