Global navigation satellite system (GNSS) positions include various useful signals and some unmodeled errors. In order to enhance the accuracy and extract the features of the GNSS daily time sequence, an improved method of complete ensemble empirical mode decomposition (CEEMD) and multi-PCA (MPCA) based on correlation coefficients and block spatial filtering was proposed. The results showed that the mean standard deviations of the raw residual time sequence were 1.09, 1.20 and 4.79 mm, while those of the newly proposed method were 0.15, 0.20 and 2.86 mm in north, east and up directions, respectively. The proposed method outperforms wavelet decomposition (WD)-PCA and empirical mode decomposition (EMD)-PCA in effectively eliminating low- and high-frequency noise, and is suitable for denoising nonlinear and nonstationary GNSS position sequences. Furthermore, feature extraction of the denoised GNSS daily time series was based on CEEMD, which is superior to WD and EMD. Results of noise analysis suggested that the noise components in the original and denoised GNSS time sequence are complex. The advantages of the proposed method are the following: (i) it fully exploits the merits of CEEMD and WD, where CEEMD is first used to obtain the limited intrinsic modal functions (IMFs) and then to extract seasonal and trend features; (ii) it has good adaptive processing ability via WD for noise-dominant IMFs; and (iii) it fully considers the correlation between the different components of each station and the non-uniform behavior of common mode error on a spatial scale.

Airborne light detection and ranging (LiDAR) technology has become the mainstream data source in geosciences and environmental sciences. Point cloud filtering is a prerequisite for almost all LiDAR-based applications. However, it is challenging to select a suitable filtering algorithm for handling high-density point clouds over complex landscapes. Therefore, to determine an appropriate filter on a specific environment, this paper comparatively assessed the performance of five representative filtering algorithms on six study sites with different terrain characteristics, where three plots are located in urban areas and three in forest areas. The representative filtering methods include simple morphological filter (SMRF), multiresolution hierarchical filter (MHF), slope-based filter (SBF), progressive TIN densification (PTD) and segmentation-based filter (SegBF). Results demonstrate that SMRF performs the best in urban areas, and compared to MHF, SBF, PTD and SegBF, the total error of SMRF is reduced by 1.38%, 48.21%, 48.25% and 31.03%, respectively. MHF outperforms the others in forest areas, and compared to SMRF, SBF, PTD and SegBF, the total error of MHF is reduced by 1.98%, 35.87%, 45.11% and 9.42%, respectively. Moreover, both SMRF and MHF keep a good balance between type I and II errors, which makes the produced DEMs much similar to the references. Overall, SMRF and MHF are recommended for urban and forest areas, respectively, and MHF averagely performs slightly better than SMRF on all areas with respect to kappa coefficient.

Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) digital elevation model (DEM) inherently suffers from various errors. Many previous works employed Geoscience Laser Altimeter System onboard the Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation Satellite (ICESat/GLAS) data to assess and enhance SRTM DEM accuracy. Nevertheless, data coregistration between the two datasets was commonly neglected in their studies. In this paper, an automated and simple three dimensional (3D) coregistration method (3CM) was introduced to align the 3-arc-second SRTM (SRTM3) DEM and ICESat/GLAS data over Jiangxi province, China. Then, accuracy evaluation of the SRTM3 DEM using ICESat/GLAS data with and without data coregistration was performed on different classes of terrain factors and different land uses, with the purpose of evaluating the importance of data coregistration. Results show that after data coregistration, the root mean square error (RMSE) and mean bias of the SRTM3 DEM are reduced by 14.4% and 97.1%, respectively. Without data coregistration, terrain aspects with a sine-like shape are strongly related to SRTM3 DEM errors; nevertheless, this relationship disappears after data coregistration. Among the six land uses, SRTM3 DEM produces the lowest accuracy in forest areas. Finally, by incorporating land uses, terrain factors and ICESat/GLAS data into the correction models, the SRTM3 DEM was enhanced using multiple linear regression (MLR), back propagation neural network (BPNN), generalized regression NN (GRNN), and random forest (RF), respectively. Results exhibit that the four enhancement models with data coregistration obviously outperform themselves without the coregistration. Among the four models, RF produces the best result, and its RMSE is about 3.1%, 2.7% and 11.3% lower than those of MLR, BPNN, and GRNN, respectively. Moreover, 146 Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) points over Ganzhou city of Jiangxi province were used to assess the accuracy of the RF-derived SRTM3 DEM. It is found that the DEM quality is improved and has a similar error magnitude to that relative to the ICESat/GLASS data.

Light detection and ranging (LiDAR) technique is currently one of the most important tools for collecting elevation points with a high density in the context of digital elevation model (DEM) construction. However, the high density data always leads to serious time and memory consumption problems in data processing. In this paper, we have developed a thin plate spline (TPS)-based feature-preserving (TPS-F) method for LiDAR-derived ground data reduction by selecting a certain amount of significant terrain points and by extracting geomorphological features from the raw dataset to maintain the accuracy of constructed DEMs as high as possible, while maximally keeping terrain features. We employed four study sites with different topographies (i.e., flat, undulating, hilly and mountainous terrains) to analyze the performance of TPS-F for LiDAR data reduction in the context of DEM construction. These results were compared with those of the TPS-based algorithm without features (TPS-W) and two classical data selection methods including maximum z-tolerance (Max-Z) and the random method. Results show that irrespective of terrain characteristic, the two versions of TPS-based approaches (i.e., TPS-F and TPS-W) are always more accurate than the classical methods in terms of error range and root means square error. Moreover, in terms of streamline matching rate (SMR), TPS-F has a better ability of preserving geomorphological features, especially for the mountainous terrain. For example, the average SMR of TPS-F is 89.2% in the mountainous area, while those of TPS-W, max-Z and the random method are 56.6%, 34.7% and 35.3%, respectively.

Remote-sensing-derived elevation data sets often suffer from noise and outliers due to various reasons, such as the physical limitations of sensors, multiple reflectance, occlusions and low contrast of texture. Outliers generally have a seriously negative effect on DEM construction. Some interpolation methods like ordinary kriging (OK) are capable of smoothing noise inherent in sample points, but are sensitive to outliers. In this paper, a robust algorithm of multiquadric method (MQ) based on an Improved Huber loss function (MQ-IH) has been developed to decrease the impact of outliers on DEM construction. Theoretically, the improved Huber loss function is null for outliers, quadratic for small errors, and linear for others. Simulated data sets drawn from a mathematical surface with different error distributions were employed to analyze the robustness of MQ-IH. Results indicate that MQ-IH obtains a good balance between efficiency and robustness. Namely, the performance of MQ-IH is comparative to those of the classical MQ and MQ based on the Classical Huber loss function (MQ-CH) when sample points follow a normal distribution, and the former outperforms the latter two when sample points are subject to outliers. For example, for the Cauchy error distribution with the location parameter of 0 and scale parameter of 1, the root mean square errors (RMSEs) of MQ-CH and the classical MQ are 0.3916 and 1.4591, respectively, whereas that of MQ-IH is 0.3698. The performance of MQ-IH is further evaluated by qualitative and quantitative analysis through a real-world example of DEM construction with the stereo-images-derived elevation points. Results demonstrate that compared with the classical interpolation methods, including natural neighbor (NN), OK and ANUDEM (a program that calculates regular grid digital elevation models (DEMs) with sensible shape and drainage structure from arbitrarily large topographic data sets), and two versions of MQ, including the classical MQ and MQ-CH, MQ-IH has a better ability of maximally reducing the impact of outliers, while faithfully preserving terrain features. Theoretically, MQ-IH is not a promising interpolation method, and some side effects can be found from its simulation results. For example, the contours of MQ-IH are coarser than ANUDEM in some locations of the real-world study site, and its hill shade may not strictly agree with the real-world surface at rough terrain. Furthermore, the computing cost of MQ-IH is much bigger than that of the classical interpolation methods. However, compared with the classical interpolation methods, MQ-IH has significant potential for interpolating remote-sensing-derived elevation data sets.

Airborne light detection and ranging (LiDAR) datasets with a large volume pose a great challenge to the traditional interpolation methods for the production of digital terrain models (DTMs). Thus, a fast, global interpolation method based on thin plate spline (TPS) is proposed in this paper. In the methodology, a weighted version of finite difference TPS is first developed to deal with the problem of missing data in the grid-based surface construction. Then, the interpolation matrix of the weighted TPS is deduced and found to be largely sparse. Furthermore, the values and positions of each nonzero element in the matrix are analytically determined. Finally, to make full use of the sparseness of the interpolation matrix, the linear system is solved with an iterative manner. These make the new method not only fast, but also require less random-access memory. Tests on six simulated datasets indicate that compared to recently developed discrete cosine transformation (DCT)-based TPS, the proposed method has a higher speed and accuracy, lower memory requirement, and less sensitivity to the smoothing parameter. Real-world examples on 10 public and 1 private dataset demonstrate that compared to the DCT-based TPS and the locally weighted interpolation methods, such as linear, natural neighbor (NN), inverse distance weighting (IDW), and ordinary kriging (OK), the proposed method produces visually good surfaces, which overcome the problems of peak-cutting, coarseness, and discontinuity of the aforementioned interpolators. More importantly, the proposed method has a similar performance to the simple interpolation methods (e.g., IDW and NN) with respect to computing time and memory cost, and significantly outperforms OK. Overall, the proposed method with low memory requirement and computing cost offers great potential for the derivation of DTMs from large-scale LiDAR datasets.

A new method for improving the accuracy of gridded sea surface salinity (SSS) fields is proposed in this paper. The method mainly focuses on dual quality–distance weighting of the Aquarius level 2 along-track SSS data according to quality flags, which represent nonnominal data conditions for measurements. In the weighting progress, 14 data conditions were considered, and their geospatial distributions and influences on the SSS were also visualized and evaluated. Three interpolation methods were employed, and weekly gridded SSS maps were produced for the period from September 2011 to May 2015. These maps were evaluated via comparisons with concurrent Argo buoy measurements. The results show that the proposed method improved the accuracy of the SSS fields by approximately 36% compared to the officially released weekly level 3 products and yielded root mean squared difference (RMSD), correlation and bias values of 0.19 psu, 0.98 and 0.01 psu, respectively. These findings indicate a significant improvement in the accuracy of the SSS fields and provide a better understanding of the influences of different conditions on salinity.

Based on widely used remote sensing ocean net primary production (NPP) datasets, the spatiotemporal variability of NPP is first analyzed over the tropical eastern Indian and western Pacific Ocean for the period 1998⁻2016 using the conventional empirical orthogonal function (EOF), the lead⁻lag correlation and the ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD) technique. Barnett and Preisendorfer’s improved Canonical Correlation Analysis (BPCCA) is also applied to derive covariability patterns of NPP with major forcing factors of the chlorophyll a concentration (Chla), sea surface temperature (SST), sea level anomaly (SLA), ocean rainfall (Rain), sea surface wind (Wind), and current (CUR) under climate changes of El Niño⁻Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD). We find that: (1) The first two seasonal EOF modes capture significant temporal and meridional NPP variability differences, as NPP reaches peaks approximately three months later in the western Pacific Ocean than that of in the eastern Indian Ocean. (2) The second and third interannual EOF modes are closely related with ENSO with a two-month lag and synchronous with IOD, respectively, characterized by southwesterly positive anomaly centers during positive IOD years. (3) NPP presents different varying tendencies and similar multiscale oscillation patterns with interannual and interdecadal cycles of 2~3 years, 5~8 years, and 9~19 years in subregions of the Bay of Bengal, the South China Sea, the southeastern Indian Ocean, and the northwestern Pacific Ocean. (4) The NPP variability is strongly coupled with negative SST, SLA, and Rain anomalies, as well as positive Chla, Wind and CUR anomalies in general during El Niño/positive IOD years. The results reveal the diversity and complexity of large-scale biophysical interactions in the key Indo-Pacific Warm Pool region, which improves our understanding of ocean productivity, ecosystems, and carbon budgets.

To overcome the huge volume problem of light detection and ranging (LiDAR) data for the derivation of digital terrain models (DTMs), a least squares compactly supported radial basis function (CSRBF) interpolation method is proposed in this paper. The proposed method has a limited support radius and fewer RBF centers than the sample points, selected by a newly developed surface variation-based algorithm. Those make the linear system of the proposed method not only much sparser but also efficiently solvable. Tests on a synthetic dataset demonstrate that the proposed method is comparable to the smoothing RBF, and far superior to the exact RBF. Moreover, the first is much faster than the others. The proposed method with the RBF centers selected by the surface variation-based algorithm obviously outperforms that with the random selection of equal number. Real-world examples on one private and ten public datasets show that the surfaces of simple interpolation methods including inverse distance weighting, natural neighbor, linear and bicubic suffer from the problems of roughness, peak-cutting, discontinuity and subtle terrain feature loss, respectively. By contrast, the proposed method produces visually appealing results, keeping a good tradeoff between noise removal and terrain feature preservation. Additionally, the new method compares favorably with ordinary kriging (OK) for the generation of high-resolution DTMs in terms of interpolation accuracy, yet the former is much more robust to spatial resolution variation and terrain characteristics than the latter. More importantly, our method is about 4 times faster than OK. In conclusion, the proposed method has high potential for the interpolation of a large LiDAR dataset, especially when both interpolation accuracy and computational cost are taken into account.

Numerous shallow earthquakes, including a multitude of small shocks and three moderate mainshocks, i.e., the Amatrice earthquake on 24 August, the Visso earthquake on 26 October and the Norcia earthquake on 30 October, occurred throughout central Italy in late 2016 and resulted in many casualties and property losses. The three mainshocks were successfully recorded by high-rate Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers located near the epicenters, while the broadband seismograms in this area were mostly clipped due to the strong shaking. We retrieved the dynamic displacements from these high-rate GPS records using kinematic precise point positioning analysis. The focal mechanisms of the three mainshocks were estimated both individually and jointly using high-rate GPS waveforms in a very small epicentral distance range (

Impact cratering process is the major geologic activity on the surface of the Moon, and the spatial distribution and size-frequency distribution of lunar craters are indicative to the bombardment history of the Solar System. The substantial efforts on the development of automated crater detection algorithms (CDAs) have been carried out on the images from the remote sensing observations. Recently, CDAs via convolutional neural network (CNN) on digital elevation model (DEM) has been developed as it can combine the discrimination ability of CNN with the robust characteristic of the DEM data. However, most of the existing algorithms adopt a traditional two-stage detection pipeline including an edge segmentation and a template matching step. In this paper, we attempt to reduce the gap between the existing DEM-based CDAs and the advanced CNN methods for object detection, and propose a complete workflow including an end-to-end deep learning pipeline for lunar crater detection, in particular for craters smaller than 50 km in diameter. Based on the workflow, we benchmark nine representative CNN models involving three popular types of detection architectures. Moreover, we elaborate on the practical application of the proposed workflow, and provide an example method to demonstrate the performance advantage in terms of the precision (82.97%) and recall (79.39%). Furthermore, we develop a crater verification tool to manually validate the detection results, and the visualization results show that our detected craters are reasonable and can be used as a supplement to the existing hand-labeled datasets.

Use of a frequency-division multiple access strategy causes Globalnaya Navigatsionnaya Sputnikovaya Sistema (GLONASS) receiving equipment to experience both inter-frequency phase bias (IFPB) and inter-frequency code bias (IFCB). While IFPB can be calibrated using a linear model, there is no general model for IFCB calibration, which causes great difficulty in GLONASS ambiguity resolution over long baselines; most current GLONASS ambiguity resolution research is confined to short baselines. In this paper, based on a single-differencing between-receivers (SDBR) model, a wide-lane phase combination-based approach is proposed to fix the GLONASS ambiguities over long baselines. External precise ionospheric products are introduced to eliminate the ionospheric delay. To mitigate the effect of the residual ionospheric delays, we fix the relative wide-lane ambiguity using the Hatch–Melbourne–Wubbena (HMW) combination. The results show that 96% and 55% of the wide-lane round-off residuals are within 0.2 cycles for the Global Positioning System (GPS) and GLONASS, respectively, if the traditional HMW method is used. The method proposed here for GLONASS can improve these percentages significantly, reaching up to 95.5%. The root mean square (RMS) position errors are 1.43, 1.06 and 4.32 mm for GPS in the north, east and up directions, respectively. When GLONASS with ambiguity fixing is added, the corresponding RMS values are reduced significantly to 1.26, 1.02 and 3.87 mm, respectively.

Correction of the fractional cycle bias (FCB) in the undifferenced ambiguity allows precise point positioning (PPP) integer ambiguity resolution (IAR) to be achieved, which can improve positioning accuracy significantly. In addition, in real-time PPP-IAR, integration of the BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS) can provide a significant reduction in the initial fixing time of global positioning system (GPS)-only PPP-IAR. However, the FCB quality can be considerably affected by the low precision of the BDS orbit, which then severely hampers the GPS + BDS PPP-IAR performance. Therefore, a real-time FCB estimation strategy that takes the BDS satellite orbit error into consideration was developed in this study. The slant orbit error can be absorbed by the ionosphere-free (IF) ambiguity, which can then be recovered by fixing all IF ambiguities from all the tracking stations. The estimated orbit error is then used to refine the orbit, which is broadcast along with the FCBs to enable PPP ambiguity resolution. To evaluate the proposed strategy, an experiment using 60 tracking stations covering the China region is performed in a simulated real-time mode. The a posteriori residuals of both the wide- and narrow-lane ambiguities are checked to validate the efficiency of the proposed FCB strategy. The results show that when the proposed strategy is applied, the effect of the BDS orbit error on narrow-lane FCB estimation is eliminated and more than 94% of the narrow-lane residuals are within 0.1 cycles for both the GPS and the BDS. The fixing percentage within 20 min is 46.3% for the GPS-only solution but is only 4.8% when using GPS + BDS with the traditional method. However, when the proposed strategy is used, the fixing percentage for GPS + BDS improves significantly to 91.7%.

Integer ambiguity resolution (IAR) is important for rapid initialization of precise point positioning (PPP). Whereas many studies have been limited to Global Positioning System (GPS) alone, there is a strong need to add Globalnaya Navigatsionnaya Sputnikovaya Sistema (GLONASS) to the PPP-IAR solution. However, the frequency-division multiplexing of GLONASS signals causes inter-frequency code bias (IFCB) in the receiving equipment. The IFCB causes GLONASS wide-lane uncalibrated phase delay (UPD) estimation with heterogeneous receiver types to fail, so GLONASS ambiguity is therefore traditionally estimated as float values in PPP. A two-step method of calibrating GLONASS IFCB is proposed in this paper, such that GLONASS PPP-IAR can be performed with heterogeneous receivers. Experimental results demonstrate that with the proposed method, GLONASS PPP ambiguity resolution can be achieved across a variety of receiver types. For kinematic PPP with mixed receiver types, the fixing percentage within 10 min is only 33.5% for GPS-only. Upon adding GLONASS, the percentage improves substantially, to 84.9%.

GPS has become a very effective tool to remotely sense precipitable water vapor (PWV) information, which is important for weather forecasting and nowcasting. The number of geodetic GNSS stations set up in China has substantially increased over the last few decades. However, GPS PWV derivation requires surface pressure to calculate the precise zenith hydrostatic delay and weighted mean temperature to map the zenith wet delay to precipitable water vapor. GPS stations without collocated meteorological sensors can retrieve water vapor using standard atmosphere parameters, which lead to a decrease in accuracy. In this paper, a method of interpolating NWP reanalysis data to site locations for generating corresponding meteorological elements is explored over China. The NCEP FNL dataset provided by the NCEP (National Centers for Environmental Prediction) and over 600 observed stations from different sources was selected to assess the quality of the results. A one-year experiment was performed in our study. The types of stations selected include meteorological sites, GPS stations, radio sounding stations, and a sun photometer station. Compared with real surface measurements, the accuracy of the interpolated surface pressure and air temperature both meet the requirements of GPS PWV derivation in most areas; however, the interpolated surface air temperature exhibits lower precision than the interpolated surface pressure. At more than 96% of selected stations, PWV differences caused by the differences between the interpolation results and real measurements were less than 1.0 mm. Our study also indicates that relief amplitude exerts great influence on the accuracy of the interpolation approach. Unsatisfactory interpolation results always occurred in areas of strong relief. GPS PWV data generated from interpolated meteorological parameters are consistent with other PWV products (radio soundings, the NWP reanalysis dataset, and sun photometer PWV data). The differences between them were approximately 1~3 mm at most at our selected stations, and GPS data processing is the main factor influencing the agreement of the GPS PWV results with those of other methods.
