The existing precision grazing technology helps to improve the utilization rate of livestock to pasture, but it is still at the level of "collectivization" and cannot provide more accurate grazing management and control. (1) Background: In recent years, with the rapid development of agent-related technologies such as deep learning, visual navigation and tracking, more and more lightweight edge computing cell target detection algorithms have been proposed. (2) Methods: In this study, the improved YOLOv5 detector combined with the extended dataset realized the accurate identification and location of domestic cattle; with the help of the kernel correlation filter (KCF) automatic tracking framework, the long-term cyclic convolution network (LRCN) was used to analyze the texture characteristics of animal fur and effectively distinguish the individual cattle. (3) Results: The intelligent UAV equipped with an AGX Xavier high-performance computing unit ran the above algorithm through edge computing and effectively realized the individual identification and positioning of cattle during the actual flight. (4) Conclusion: The UAV platform based on airborne depth reasoning is expected to help the development of smart ecological animal husbandry and provide better precision services for herdsmen. As one of the best indicators of the periglacial environment, ice-wedge polygons (IWPs) are important for arctic landscapes, hydrology, engineering, and ecosystems. Thus, a better understanding of the spatiotemporal dynamics and evolution of IWPs is key to evaluating the hydrothermal state and carbon budgets of the arctic permafrost environment. In this paper, the dynamics of ground surface deformation (GSD) in IWP zones (2018–2019) and their influencing factors over the last 20 years in Saskylakh, northwestern Yakutia, Russia were investigated using the Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) and Google Earth Engine (GEE). The results show an annual ground surface deformation rate (AGSDR) in Saskylakh at −49.73 to 45.97 mm/a during the period from 1 June 2018 to 3 May 2019. All the selected GSD regions indicate that the relationship between GSD and land surface temperature (LST) is positive (upheaving) for regions with larger AGSDR, and negative (subsidence) for regions with lower AGSDR. The most drastic deformation was observed at the Aeroport regions with GSDs rates of −37.06 mm/a at tower and 35.45 mm/a at runway. The GSDs are negatively correlated with the LST of most low-centered polygons (LCPs) and high-centered polygons (HCPs). Specifically, the higher the vegetation cover, the higher the LST and the thicker the active layer. An evident permafrost degradation has been observed in Saskylakh as reflected in higher ground temperatures, lusher vegetation, greater active layer thickness, and fluctuant numbers and areal extents of thermokarst lakes and ponds. Self-supervised learning (SSL) has significantly bridged the gap between supervised and unsupervised learning in computer vision tasks and shown impressive success in the field of remote sensing (RS). However, these methods have primarily focused on single-modal RS data, which may have limitations in capturing the diversity of information in complex scenes. In this paper, we propose the Asymmetric Attention Fusion (AAF) framework to explore the potential of multi-modal representation learning compared to two simpler fusion methods: early fusion and late fusion. Given that data from active sensors (e.g., digital surface models and light detection and ranging) is often noisier and less informative than optical images, the AAF is designed with an asymmetric attention mechanism within a two-stream encoder, applied at each encoder stage. Additionally, we introduce a Transfer Gate module to select more informative features from the fused representations, enhancing performance in downstream tasks. Our comparative analyses on the ISPRS Potsdam datasets, focusing on scene classification and segmentation tasks, demonstrate significant performance enhancements with AAF compared to baseline methods. The proposed approach achieves an improvement of over 7% in all metrics compared to randomly initialized methods for both tasks. Furthermore, when compared to early fusion and late fusion methods, AAF consistently outperforms in achieving superior improvements. These results underscore the effectiveness of AAF in leveraging the strengths of multi-modal RS data for SSL, opening doors for more sophisticated and nuanced RS analysis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Mangrove wetlands are hotspots of global biodiversity and blue carbon reserves in coastal wetlands, with unique ecological functions and significant socioeconomic value. Annual fine-scale monitoring of mangroves is crucial for evaluating national conservation programs and implementing sustainable mangrove management strategies. However, annual fine-scale mapping of mangroves over large areas using remote sensing remains a challenge due to spectral similarities with coastal vegetation, tidal periodic fluctuations, and the need for consistent and dependable samples across different years. In previous research, there has been a lack of strategies that simultaneously consider spatial, temporal, and methodological aspects of mangrove extraction. Therefore, based on an approach that considers mangrove habitat, tides, and a semantic segmentation approach, we propose a method for fine-scale mangrove mapping suitable for long time-series data. This is an optimized hybrid model that integrates spatial, temporal, and methodological considerations. The model uses five sensors (GF-1, GF-2, GF-6, ZY-301, ZY-302) to combine deep learning U-Net models with mangrove habitat information and algorithms during low-tide periods. This method produces a mangrove map with a spatial resolution of 2 m. We applied this algorithm to three typical mangrove regions in the Beibu Gulf of Guangxi Province. The results showed the following: (1) The model scored above 0.9 in terms of its F1-score in all three study areas at the time of training, with an average accuracy of 92.54% for mangrove extraction. (2) The average overall accuracy (OA) for the extraction of mangrove distribution in three typical areas in the Beibu Gulf was 93.29%. When comparing the validation of different regions and years, the overall OA accuracy exceeded 89.84% and the Kappa coefficient exceeded 0.74. (3) The model results are reliable for extracting sparse and slow-growing young mangroves and narrow mangrove belts along roadsides. In some areas where tidal flooding occurs, the existing dataset underestimates mangrove extraction to a certain extent. The fine-scale mangrove extraction method provides a foundation for the implementation of fine-scale management of mangrove ecosystems, support for species diversity conservation, blue carbon recovery, and sustainable development goals related to coastal development. A satellite altimeter measures sea surface height (SSH) along the nadir track. Multiple satellite altimeters have been in orbit, and the measurements been merged for mapping mesoscale eddies of ~100 km in size in the oceans. The capability of the mapped SSH for resolving mesoscale eddies depends on mapping algorithms. A two-dimensional variational (2DVAR) algorithm was implemented to generate mapped SSH at a grid size of 1/12° in the South China Sea. A range of comparisons were performed between the mapped SSH and the commonly used AVISO (Archiving, Validation, and Interpretation of Satellite Oceanographic satellite data) mapped SSH data product at a grid size of 1/8° and 1/4°. The effective resolution, which represents the spatial scale that the data can resolve, was examined. The effective resolution of the mapped SSH using the 2DVAR algorithm is approximately 100 km, while it is 250 km with the 1/8° and 1/4° AVISO data products. The difference in the effective resolution results from the difference in the background state and thus the background error. The result suggests that the effective resolution of the mapped data could be increased by choosing a background state so that the associated errors could have a smaller decorrelation length scale. Soil salinization seriously threatens agricultural production and ecological environments in arid areas. The accurate and rapid monitoring of soil salinity and its spatial variability is of great significance for the amelioration of saline soils. In this study, 191 soil samples were collected from cotton fields in southern Xinjiang, China, to obtain spectral reflectance and electrical conductivity (EC) indoors. Then, multi-granularity spectral segmentation (MGSS) and seven conventional spectral preprocessing methods were employed to preprocess the spectral data, followed by the construction of partial least squares regression (PLSR) models for soil EC estimation. Finally, the performance of the models was compared. The results showed that compared with conventional spectral preprocessing methods, MGSS could greatly improve the correlation between spectrum and soil EC, extract the weak spectral information of soil EC, and expand the spectral utilization range. The model validation results showed that the PLSR model based on the second-order derivative (2nd-der-PLSR) had the highest estimation accuracy among the models constructed by conventional methods. However, the PLSR model based on MGSS (MGSS-PLSR) had the highest estimation accuracy among all models, with Rp2 (0.901) and RPD (3.080) being 0.151 and 1.302 higher than those of the 2nd-der-PLSR model, respectively, and nRMSEP (5.857%) being 4.29% lower than that of the 2nd-der-PLSR model. The reason for the high accuracy of the MGSS-PLSR model is as follows: In the continuous segmentation of the raw spectrum by MGSS, the bands with strong and weak correlations with respect to soil EC were concentrated during low granularity segmentation. With the increase in granularity level, the spectral features decreased and were distributed discretely. In addition, the locations of spectral features were also different at different granularity levels. Therefore, the spectral features of soil EC can be effectively extracted by the MGSS, which significantly improves the spectral estimation accuracy of soil salinity. Cotton is one of the most important cash crops in Xinjiang, and timely seedling inspection and replenishment at the seedling stage are essential for cotton's late production management and yield formation. The background conditions of the cotton seedling stage are complex and variable, and deep learning methods are widely used to extract target objects from the complex background. Therefore, this study takes seedling cotton as the research object and uses three deep learning algorithms, YOLOv5, YOLOv7, and CenterNet, for cotton seedling detection and counting using images at six different times of the cotton seedling period based on multispectral images collected by UAVs to develop a model applicable to the whole cotton seedling period. The results showed that when tested with data collected at different times, YOLOv7 performed better overall in detection and counting, and the T4 dataset performed better in each test set. Precision, Recall, and F1-Score values with the best test results were 96.9%, 96.6%, and 96.7%, respectively, and the R2, RMSE, and RRMSE indexes were 0.94, 3.83, and 2.72%, respectively. In conclusion, the UAV multispectral images acquired about 23 days after cotton sowing (T4) with the YOLOv7 algorithm achieved rapid and accurate seedling detection and counting throughout the cotton seedling stage. For crop growth monitoring and agricultural management, it is important to use hyperspectral remote sensing techniques to estimate canopy nitrogen content in a timely and accurate manner. The traditional nadir method has limited ability to assess the nitrogen trophic state of cotton shoots, which is not conducive to high-precision nitrogen inversion, whereas the multi-angle remote sensing monitoring method can effectively extract the canopy's physicochemical information. However, multi-angle spectral information is affected by a variety of factors, which frequently causes shifts in the band associated with nitrogen uptake, and lowers the estimation accuracy. The capacity of the spectral index to estimate aerial nitrogen concentration (ANC) in cotton was therefore investigated in this work under various observation zenith angles (VZAs), and the Relief−F method was employed to select the best spectral band with weight for ANC that is insensitive to VZA. Therefore, in this study, the ability of the spectral index to estimate ANC in cotton was explored under different VZAs, and the Relief-F algorithm was used to optimize the optimal spectral band with weight for ANC that is insensitive to VZA. The angle insensitive nitrogen index (AINI) for various VZAs was calculated using the expression (R530 − R704)/(R1412 + R704). The results show that the correlation between the spectral index and the ANC chosen in this study is stronger than the correlation between off-nadir observations, and the correlation coefficients between Photochemical Reflectance Index (PRI), AINI, and ANC are highest when VZA is −20° and −50° (r = 0.866 and 0.893, respectively). Compared with the traditional vegetation index, AINI had the best correlation with ANC under different VZAs (r > 0.84), and the performance of ANC in the backscatter direction was estimated to be better than that in the forward-scatter direction. At the same time, the ANC estimation model of the optimal indices AINI and PRI was combined with the machine learning method to achieve better accuracy, and the prediction accuracy of the random forest (RF) model was R2 = 0.98 and RMSE = 0.590. This study shows that the AINI index can estimate cotton ANC under different VZAs. Simultaneously, the backscattered direction is revealed to be more conducive to cotton ANC estimation. Early diagnosis of cotton verticillium wilt (VW) and accurate assessment of the disease degree are important prerequisites for preventing the large-scale development of cotton VW. Hyperspectral techniques have been widely used for monitoring the extent of plant diseases, but early detection of VW disease in cotton remains a challenge. In this study, the Boruta algorithm was used to select the key physiological characteristics (leaf temperature, chlorophyll a content, and equivalent water thickness) of cotton leaves at the early stage of VW disease, and then the Relief-F algorithm was used to select the spectral features indicating multiple "symptoms" of cotton VW disease at the early stage. In addition, a new cotton VW early monitoring indicator (CVWEI) was constructed by combining the weights of the new index and related bands using a hierarchical analysis (AHP) and entropy weighting method (EWM). The study showed that the physiological indices constructed under VW stress were better indicators of VW disease than traditional vegetation indices; CVEWI achieved a high accuracy of 95% in the test set, with a Kappa coefficient of 0.89; and the test set R2 was 0.73 and RMSE was 3.15% for monitoring disease severity, compared to the optimal classification constructed using a single spectral index. By studying the spectral information of cotton leaf nitrogen content, sensitive feature bands and spectral indices for leaf nitrogen content were screened, and different methods were used to model the screened feature bands and indices to find a method with higher accuracy and stability of the inversion model, which provides a theoretical basis and technical support for remote sensing estimation of cotton nitrogen content in Xinjiang. The experiment was conducted in 2019–2020 at the Second Company of Shihezi University Teaching Experimental Farm in Xinjiang, China, with six fertilization treatments (0, 120, 240, 360, 480 kg/hm pure N), sampled at five key fertility stages of cotton (squaring stage, full budding stage, flowering, boll stage, and boll opening stage), and the obtained data were used in two modeling approaches (eigenbands and spectral indices) to establish a cotton nitrogen estimation model and estimate the cotton leaf N content. The results showed that the nonlinear model using SVR was validated with an R2 of 0.71 and an RMSE of 3.91. The linear models of MLR and PLS were developed for the feature bands screened by SPA and RF, respectively, and the best modeling result was achieved by SPA-PLS with a validated R2 of 0.722 and an RMSE of 3.83. The existing spectral indices were optimized by screening the central wavelength and the simple linear regression model was constructed. The inversion effect of the SVR model with the characteristic spectral modeling was better than the index results. However, compared with the direct use of the characteristic wavelengths and the SVR way of modeling, the accuracy of leaf N content estimation by the model built by optimizing the spectral indices was reduced but the stability was greatly improved, and it can be used as a hyperspectral model for leaf N content at full fertility. The accurate assessment of cotton nitrogen (N) content over a large area using an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) and a hyperspectral meter has practical significance for the precise management of cotton N fertilizer. In this study, we tested the feasibility of the use of a UAV equipped with a hyperspectral spectrometer for monitoring cotton leaf nitrogen content (LNC) by analyzing spectral reflectance (SR) data collected by the UAV flying at altitudes of 60, 80, and 100 m. The experiments performed included two cotton varieties and six N treatments, with applications ranging from 0 to 480 kg ha−1. The results showed the following: (i) With the increase in UAV flight altitude, SR at 500–550 nm increases. In the near-infrared range, SR decreases with the increase in UAV flight altitude. The unique characteristics of vegetation comprise a decrease in the "green peak", a "red valley" increase, and a redshift appearing in the "red edge" position. (ii) We completed the unsupervised classification of images and found that after classification, the SR was significantly correlated to the cotton LNC in both the visible and near-infrared regions. Before classification, the relationship between spectral data and LNC was not significant. (iii) Fusion modeling showed improved performance when UAV data were collected at three different heights. The model established by multiple linear regression (MLR) had the best performance of those tested in this study, where the model-adjusted the coefficient of determination (R2), root-mean-square error (RMSE), and mean absolute error (MAE) reached 0.96, 1.12, and 1.57, respectively. This was followed by support vector regression (SVR), for which the adjusted_R2, RMSE, and MAE reached 0.71, 1.48, and 1.08, respectively. The worst performance was found for principal component regression (PCR), for which the adjusted_R2, RMSE, and MAE reached 0.59, 1.74, and 1.36, respectively. Therefore, we can conclude that taking UAV hyperspectral images at multiple heights results in a more comprehensive reflection of canopy information and, thus, has greater potential for monitoring cotton LNC. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) has been increasingly applied to crop growth monitoring due to their advantages, such as their rapid and repetitive capture ability, high resolution, and low cost. LAI is an important parameter for evaluating crop canopy structure and growth without damage. Accurate monitoring of cotton LAI has guiding significance for nutritional diagnosis and the accurate fertilization of cotton. This study aimed to obtain hyperspectral images of the cotton canopy using a UAV carrying a hyperspectral sensor and to extract effective information to achieve cotton LAI monitoring. In this study, cotton field experiments with different nitrogen application levels and canopy spectral images of cotton at different growth stages were obtained using a UAV carrying hyperspectral sensors. Hyperspectral reflectance can directly reflect the characteristics of vegetation, and vegetation indices (VIs) can quantitatively describe the growth status of plants through the difference between vegetation in different band ranges and soil backgrounds. In this study, canopy spectral reflectance was extracted in order to reduce noise interference, separate overlapping samples, and highlight spectral features to perform spectral transformation; characteristic band screening was carried out; and VIs were constructed using a correlation coefficient matrix. Combined with canopy spectral reflectance and VIs, multiple stepwise regression (MSR) and extreme learning machine (ELM) were used to construct an LAI monitoring model of cotton during the whole growth period. The results show that, after spectral noise reduction, the bands screened by the successive projections algorithm (SPA) are too concentrated, while the sensitive bands screened by the shuffled frog leaping algorithm (SFLA) are evenly distributed. Secondly, the calculation of VIs after spectral noise reduction can improve the correlation between vegetation indices and LAI. The DVI (540,525) correlation was the largest after standard normal variable transformation (SNV) pretreatment, with a correlation coefficient of −0.7591. Thirdly, cotton LAI monitoring can be realized only based on spectral reflectance or VIs, and the ELM model constructed by calculating vegetation indices after SNV transformation had the best effect, with verification set R2 = 0.7408, RMSE = 1.5231, and rRMSE = 24.33%, Lastly, the ELM model based on SNV-SFLA-SNV-VIs had the best performance, with validation set R2 = 0.9066, RMSE = 0.9590, and rRMSE = 15.72%. The study results show that the UAV equipped with a hyperspectral sensor has broad prospects in the detection of crop growth index, and it can provide a theoretical basis for precise cotton field management and variable fertilization. Groundwater icings, typical features of permafrost hydrology, are indicative of hydrothermal interactions between surface and ground waters, and permafrost. Their main morphological parameters, i.e., icing area and volume, are generally estimated with low accuracy. Only scarce field observational data on icing volume and seasonal development exist to date. Our study evaluates and compares performance of several widely used techniques of icing morphometric estimation, based on field data, collected on a giant Icing #2 in the Samokit River basin, southern Yakutia. Groundwater icing area was estimated by: (a) staking, (b) unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) surveys, and (c) satellite imagery analysis. Icing #2 area in late February was between 1.38·106 m2 and 1.68·106 m2, icing volume, between 1.73·106 m3 and 4.20·106 m3, depending on the technique used. Staking is the least accurate, but also the only direct technique, which is hence used as a baseline tool in our study. Staking-based assessment of icing morphometry is the most conservative, while UAV-based estimates of icing area are higher by 14% to 17%, and of icing volume, by 74% to 142%, compared to staking. The latter appears, in our case, to be the least accurate method, although a direct one. It requires a sufficient number of staking points and transects, which should be set up to represent all icing zones, i.e., channel branches and alluvial islands. Photogrammetry based on UAV surveys has numerous advantages, i.e., higher precision of a per pixel icing volume calculation, based on an ice-free valley bottom digital surface model (DSM), and potential reusability of a resulting DSM. However, positioning precision suffers from the overlay of multiple flyovers required because of battery replacements, and, in our case, an insufficient number of ground control points. Satellite imagery along with B.L. Sokolov's empirical approach were used to estimate the annual maximum icing area and volume, and the empirical estimates tend to converge to satellite-based values.
