Understanding the impact of irrigation on the spatiotemporal characteristics of precipitation is important for the ecological stability of the arid region of Northwest China (NWC). In this study, the global climate model MPI-ESM-MR is utilized to provide the initial and lateral boundary conditions for the regional climate model RegCM4, enabling the simulation of the long-term climate of the arid NWC region under two Representative Concentration Pathways (RCPs). The study focuses on analyzing the differences in the spatiotemporal distribution, intensity, and frequency of precipitation before and after irrigation. Furthermore, the study explores the primary factors influencing changes in the spatiotemporal distribution characteristics of precipitation in the irrigation district and its downwind region. The results indicate that RegCM4 performs well in simulating the climatology and diurnal cycle of precipitation in the NWC, particularly excelling during the summer. Large-scale irrigation significantly impacts the structure of summer precipitation, leading to a notable increase in convective precipitation near the irrigation district and surrounding mountain ranges. Anomalous cyclonic circulation and enhanced vertical velocity enhancement provide dynamic conditions for increased precipitation in the irrigation district and surrounding mountainous regions. Furthermore, the evaporation of water vapor resulting from large-scale irrigation serves as an additional source of moisture, contributing to increased precipitation in the irrigation district and its downwind region. Due to the difference in climatic conditions between the western and eastern regions around the irrigated areas, the summer extreme precipitation in the west predominantly increases. At the same time, in the east, it predominantly decreases due to irrigation. The findings of this study contribute to a deeper understanding of the physical mechanisms through which agricultural irrigation influences precipitation in the arid region of the NWC, thereby providing scientific evidence for the sustainable utilization of water resources in the region. The accurate determination of aerosol optical depth (AOD) is of great importance for climate change research and environmental monitoring. To understand the applicability of the MODIS aerosol product inversion algorithm in Gansu Province, this work uses ground-based solar photometer AOD observation data to validate the MODIS C6 version of the AOD product. Additionally, the retrieval accuracy of MODIS C6 Deep Blue (DB) algorithm AOD products and Deep Blue and Dark Target Fusion (DB–DT combined) algorithm AOD products for Gansu Province when setting different spatial sampling windows is compared and analyzed. Meanwhile, the monitoring effects of these two AOD algorithms in typical polluted atmospheric conditions in Gansu Province are compared. The results show that (1) the correlation between the MODIS AOD products of the two algorithms and the ground-based observation data decreases with an increasing spatial sampling window size. When the spatial sampling window of the two algorithms is set at 30 km × 30 km, it is more representative of the AOD value in Gansu Province, thus reflecting local characteristics. (2) When the spatial sampling window is set at 30 km × 30 km, the inversion effect of the DB algorithm AOD is better than that of the DB–DT combined algorithm AOD on different underlying surfaces. (3) The seasonal variability in the inversion accuracy of the DB algorithm AOD is less than that of the DB–DT combined algorithm, and it has inversion advantages in spring, autumn and winter, while the DB–DT combined algorithm outperforms the DB algorithm only in winter. The inversion effect of the two algorithms on AOD is influenced by the spatial sampling window setting. (4) Both the DB algorithm AOD and the DB–DT combined algorithm AOD can monitor the distribution of AOD in the central and western regions of Gansu, especially for high values of AOD under polluted atmospheric conditions, which represents a good monitoring effect. However, the two algorithms perform poorly in monitoring the southeast region of Gansu, while there is a discontinuous AOD distribution in the northwest region of Gansu. Herein, we investigated the characteristics and mechanisms of interannual variability of extreme summer precipitation in northwest China (NWC). The four high-resolution precipitation predicting products under assessment indicated that both the accumulation of summer daily precipitation ≥95th percentile, and the summer maxima of daily precipitation generally decreased in a southeast—northwest direction, while relatively high values were observed in the Tienshan and Qilian Mountain areas. In turn, the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) satellite dataset underestimated extreme precipitation in mountainous areas, while Asian precipitation highly—resolved observational data integration towards evaluation (APHRODITE) and Climate Prediction Center (CPC) captured the characteristics of extreme precipitation in NWC. AMIP-type simulations of the interannual variability of extreme summer precipitation in NWC were quite unsuccessful. However, all of them can capture the increasing trends. Therefore, we further found that the interannual increase in extreme precipitation in NWC is strongly correlated with the weakened South Asian high, strengthened Western Pacific Subtropical high, the enhanced westerly jet, and the mid- to high-latitude Rossby wave trains, whose formation and sustenance can be traced back to sea surface temperature-anomalies in the western Pacific in May, June, and July. An increased sea surface temperature promotes convection and induces diabatic heating, which stimulates anticyclonic anomalies that disturb the enhanced westerly jet, resulting in a barotropic Rossby wave train via the Gill-type response. Additionally, it guides more water vapor convergence to NWC and enhances upward motion via anticyclonic anomalies over western Europe and Eastern Asia, and cyclonic anomalies over Central Asia. Dew has been considered a supplementary water resource as it constitutes an important water supply in many ecosystems, especially in arid and semiarid areas. Remote sensing allows large-scale surface observations, offering the possibility to estimate dew in such arid and semiarid regions. In this study, by screening and combining different remote sensing variables, we obtained a well-performing monthly scale dew yield estimation model based on the support vector machine (SVM) learning method. Using daytime and nighttime land surface temperatures (LST), the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), and three emissivity bands (3.929–3.989 µm, 10.780–11.280 µm, and 11.770–12.270 µm) as the model inputs, the simulated site-scale monthly dew yield achieved a correlation coefficient (CC) of 0.89 and a root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.30 (mm) for the training set, and CC = 0.59 and RMSE = 0.55 (mm) for the test set. Applying the model to the Heihe River Basin (HRB), the results showed that the annual dew yield ranged from 8.83 to 20.28 mm/year, accounting for 2.12 to 66.88% of the total precipitation, with 74.81% of the area having an annual dew amount of 16 to 19 mm/year. We expanded the model application to Northwest China and obtained a dew yield of 5~30 mm/year from 2011 to 2020, indicating that dew is a non-negligible part of the water balance in this arid area. Accurately assessing the impact of human activities on net primary productivity (NPP) of vegetation is of great significance to the achievement of sustainable development. However, it is difficult to disentangle the effects of climate conditions and human activities on NPP, and bridging this knowledge gap largely depends on the calculation of the NPP under natural conditions. Here, we propose a method for calculating natural vegetation NPP (NNPP) based on non-human influence grids, which are obtained according to the consistent rate of climate and actual NPP (ANPP) temporal changes. We selected Northwest China as study area, and we used a light use efficiency (LUE) model to estimate ANPP and used the random forest algorithm (RF) to estimate the NNPP. The results show that NNPP is very close to ANPP, and the human activities on NPP (HNPP) based on NNPP is close to the actual situation of human activities on NPP. From 2001 to 2017, the positive HNPP accounts for 40.28% of the total grassland area, with an average value of 28.65 gC·m−2·yr−1, while the negative HNPP accounts for 59.72% of the total area, with an average value of −31.19 gC·m−2·yr−1. The grassland NPP shows an increasing trend, which is dominated by climate factors. Human activity is the dominant factor for the grassland degradation, accounting for 42.78% of the degraded area, but promoting grassland growth in 11.4% of the restored area. This study provides a new method to estimate the impacts of human activities on vegetation, and the results can be used to evaluate the effectiveness of ecological environmental governance, providing a quantitative basis for scientifically building the harmonious relationship between human and nature.

The satellite-based estimation of the dust mass concentration (DMC) is essential for accurately evaluating the global biogeochemical cycle of the dust aerosols. As for the uncertainties in estimating DMC caused by mixing dust and pollutants and assuming a fixed value for the mass extinction efficiency (MEE), a classic lidar-photometer method is employed to identify and separate the dust from pollutants, obtain the dust MEE, and evaluate the effect of the above uncertainties, during five dust field experiments in Northwest China. Our results show that this method is effective for continental aerosol mixtures consisting of dust and pollutants. It is also seen that the dust loading mainly occurred in the free troposphere (−2 trapped in the planetary boundary layer. The dust MEE ranges from 0.30 to 0.60 m2 g−1 and has a significantly negative relationship with the size of dust particles. With the assumption of the dust MEE of 0.37 (0.60) m2 g−1, the DMC is shown to be overestimated (underestimated) by 20–40% (15–30%). In other words, our results suggest that the change of MEE with the size of dust particles should be considered in the estimation of DMC.

Pseudo-invariant calibration sites (PICS) have been used for the radiometric calibration and stability monitoring of satellite optical sensors. Several stable PICS, such as those in the Sahara Desert in North Africa, were selected for the vicarious calibration of earth remote sensing satellites. However, the selection procedure of PICSs in the whole of Northwest China has not been fully explored before. This paper presents a novel technique for selecting PICS in Northwest China by combined using the coefficient of variation (CV) and the iteratively reweighted multivariate alteration detection (IR-MAD) technique. IR-MAD, which calculates the differences between two multispectral N-band images from the same scene acquired at different times, is used to identify no-change pixels (NCPs) of the scene through one image pair. The NCPs from IR-MAD using the long-term data of FY-3 visible infrared radiometer (VIRR) and aqua Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) were aggregated into the contiguously stable sites. The traditional spatial uniformity and temporal stability from MODIS surface products were used to select the potential PICS. By combining the results of both methods, over thirty PICSs with a wider brightness range of the scene types were selected. To confirm and characterize these PICSs over Northwest China, Landsat operational land imager (OLI) high-spatial-resolution images were used to check the spatial uniformity of the selected site to determine the specific location and the size of these sites. Additionally, the surface spectral reflectance and bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) were obtained from the field campaign at Chaidamu Basin, 2018. To demonstrate the practical utilization and usability of these PICSs, they were employed in the multi-site top of atmosphere (TOA) reflectance simulation to validate the operational calibration performance of Aqua/MODIS and FY-3D/MERSI-II (Medium Resolution Spectral Imager II). The high-grade uranium deposits in the Xiemisitan area, northwestern China, are genetically associated with the faulting of felsic volcanic or sub-volcanic rocks. Ferric iron alteration indicates that oxidizing hydrothermal fluids percolated through the rocks. In this study, we measured the gamma-ray intensities of rocks in the Xiemisitan area and we propose a hybrid method for the mapping of ferric iron alteration using concentration-area fractal modeling and spectral angle mapper. The method enables ferric iron alteration to be distinguished from potash-feldspar granitic rocks. The mapping results were integrated with structural data to assist with exploration for uranium in the study area. Using this approach, six prospective areas of mineralization were proposed. Of these areas, two anomalies with high gamma-ray intensities of 104 and 650 Uγ were identified and verified by field inspection. These observations suggest that Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus images are a valuable tool that can improve the efficiency of uranium exploration.

Monitoring variations in terrestrial water storage (TWS) is of great significance for the management of water resources. However, it remains a challenge to continuously monitor TWS variations using in situ observations and hydrological models because of a limited number of gauge stations and the complicated spatial distribution characteristics of TWS. In contrast, the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) could overcome the aforementioned restrictions, providing a new reliable means of observing TWS variation. Thus, GRACE was employed to investigate TWS variations in Northwest China (NWC) between April 2002 and March 2016. Unlike previous studies, we focused on the interactions of multiple climatic and vegetational factors, and their combined effects on TWS variation. In addition, we also analyzed the relationship between TWS variations and socioeconomic water consumption. The results indicated that (i) TWS had obvious seasonal variations in NWC, and showed significant decreasing trends in most parts of NWC at the 95% confidence level; (ii) decreasing sunshine duration and wind speed resulted in an increase in TWS in Qinghai province, whereas the increasing air temperature, ameliorative vegetational coverage, and excessive groundwater withdrawal jointly led to a decrease in TWS in the other provinces of NWC; (iii) TWS variations in NWC had a good correlation with water storage variations in cascade reservoirs of the upper Yellow River; and (iv) the overall interactions between multiple climatic and vegetational factors were obvious, and the strong effects of some climatic and vegetational factors could mask the weak influences of other factors in TWS variations in NWC. Hence, it is necessary to focus on the interactions of multiple factors and their combined effects on TWS variations when exploring the causes of TWS variations.
