Robotic High-Throughput Phenotyping (HTP) technology has been a powerful tool for selecting high-quality crop varieties among large quantities of traits. Due to the advantages of multi-view observation and high accuracy, ground HTP robots have been widely studied in recent years. In this paper, we study an ultra-narrow wheeled robot equipped with RGB-D cameras for inter-row maize HTP. The challenges of the narrow operating space, intensive light changes, and messy cross-leaf interference in rows of maize crops are considered. An in situ and inter-row stem diameter measurement method for HTP robots is proposed. To this end, we first introduce the stem diameter measurement pipeline, in which a convolutional neural network is employed to detect stems, and the point cloud is analyzed to estimate the stem diameters. Second, we present a clustering strategy based on DBSCAN for extracting stem point clouds under the condition that the stem is shaded by dense leaves. Third, we present a point cloud filling strategy to fill the stem region with missing depth values due to the occlusion by other organs. Finally, we employ convex hull and plane projection of the point cloud to estimate the stem diameters. The results show that the R2 and RMSE of stem diameter measurement are up to 0.72 and 2.95 mm, demonstrating its effectiveness.

Terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) can be used as a millimeter-level measurement tool for forest inventories. However, the stem diameter retrieval accuracy in sample plot scanning is not yet convincing. The errors in each step of stem diameter retrieval algorithms must be evaluated. In this study, six numerical calculation methods for the numerical calculation step, i.e., cylinder fitting (CYF), circle fitting (CF), convex hull line fitting (CLF), the proposed caliper simulation method (CSM), closure B-spline curve fitting (SP) and closure Bézier curve fitting with global convexity (SPC), were applied to stem diameter retrieval, and the similarities and differences were evaluated. The ovality, completeness and roughness were used to evaluate the stem slice point cloud quality. A total of 165 stem slice point clouds at breast height collected from three Larix kaempferi plots were used. Compared with the field-measured stem diameters at breast height (DBHs), the root mean square errors (RMSEs) of the CYF, CF, CLF, CSM, SP and SPC methods were 0.30 cm, 0.30 cm, 0.51 cm, 0.51 cm, 0.56 cm and 0.54 cm, respectively. Compared with the SPC method results, the RMSE of the CSM results was 0.05 cm. The results illustrated that the CYF and CF methods performed the same, as did the CLF and CSM methods. Most DBHs retrieved by the CYF and CF methods were smaller than the field-measured DBHs, and most DBHs retrieved by the CLF, CSM, SP and SPC methods were larger than the field-measured DBHs. This study demonstrated that the CYF and CF methods perform the best and are the most robust, and the measurements by a diameter tape and a caliper are similar enough for forestry inventories. Evaluating and preprocessing stem slice point clouds is a potential way to improve stem diameter retrieval accuracy.

Terrestrial laser scanning is a promising technique for automatic measurements of tree stems. The objectives of the study were (1) to develop and validate a new method for the detection, classification and measurements of tree stems and canopies using the Hough transformation and the RANSAC algorithm and (2) assess the influence of distance to the scanner on the measurement accuracy. Tree detection and stem diameter estimates were validated for 16 circular plots with 20 m radius. The three dominating tree species were Norway spruce (Picea abies L. Karst.), Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) and birch (Betula spp.). The proportion of detected trees decreased as the distance to the scanner increased and followed the trend of decreasing visible area. Within 10 m from the scanner, the proportion of detected trees was 87% on average for the plots and the diameter at breast height was estimated with a relative root-mean-square-error (RMSE) of 14%. The most accurate diameter measurements were obtained for pine, which had a RMSE of 7% for all the full 20 m radius plots. The RANSAC algorithm reduced noise and made it possible to obtain reliable estimates.

Accurate vehicle localization in forest environments is still an unresolved problem. Global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) have well known limitations in dense forest, and have to be combined with for instance laser based SLAM algorithms to provide satisfying accuracy. Such algorithms typically require accurate detection of trees, and estimation of tree center locations in laser data. Both these operations depend on accurate estimations of tree trunk diameter. Diameter estimations are important also for several other forestry automation and remote sensing applications. This paper evaluates several existing algorithms for diameter estimation using 2D laser scanner data. Enhanced algorithms, compensating for beam width and using multiple scans, were also developed and evaluated. The best existing algorithms overestimated tree trunk diameter by ca. 40%. Our enhanced algorithms, compensating for laser beam width, reduced this error to less than 12%.

Accurate measurement of stem diameter is essential to forest inventory. As a millimeter-level measuring tool, terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) has not yet reached millimeter-level accuracy in stem diameter measurements. The objective of this study is to develop an accurate method for deriving the stem diameter from TLS data. The methodology of stem diameter measurement by diameter tape was adopted. The stem cross-section at a given height along the stem was determined. Stem points for stem diameter retrieval were extracted according to the stem cross-section. Convex hull points of the extracted stem points were calculated in a projection plane. Then, a closed smooth curve was interpolated onto the convex hull points to simulate the path of the diameter tape, and stem diameter was calculated based on the length of the simulated path. The stems of different tree species with different properties were selected to verify the presented method. Compared with the field-measured diameter, the RMSE of the method was 0.0909 cm, which satisfies the accuracy requirement for forest inventory. This study provided a method for determining the stem cross-section and an efficient and precise curve fitting method for deriving stem diameter from TLS data.
