This paper is the editorial for the virtual special issue (VSI) of Renewable and Sustainable Energy Reviews (RSER) dedicated to three Sustainable Development of Energy Water and Environment Systems (SDEWES) Conferences held in 2022, namely: (i) the 5th South East European Conference SEESDEWES 2022 held from May 22 to 26, 2022 in Vlore, Albania; (ii) the 3rd Latin American LASDEWES 2022 held from July 24 to 28, 2022 in Sao Paulo, Brazil and (iii) the 17th SDEWES 2022 held from November 6 to 10, 2022 in Paphos, Cyprus. The VSI collected both high quality review papers and original research articles presented at these conferences, aligning with the aims and scope of RSER. Following a rigorous peer review process, seventeen articles were accepted and published. These articles explore techniques and technologies essential for advancing feasible Renewable and Sustainable Energy Systems. Spanning multidisciplinary topics, many of them address almost all the Sustainable Development Goals, offering feasible solutions for much-needed decarbonization pathways. • The VSI SDEWES 2022 presents the ready solutions for Renewable and Sustainable Energy Systems. • Five clusters for presenting the Renewable and Sustainable energy cutting edge solutions. • The positioning in the scientific context of the Renewable and Sustainable Energy Systems. • Feasible solutions for much-needed decarbonization pathways. This paper presents the potential of biogas from anaerobic digestion of vinasse and its impact in different contexts. The use of vinasse biogas (VBG) for power generation is evaluated and the potential of this energy source is compared with fossil oil power plants in terms of energy, costs and greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions in Brazil, suggesting a program where the most expensive oil power plants are replaced by biogas plants with benefits in all aspects. Secondly, the use of vinasse biomethane (VBM) to replace natural gas (NG) in the state of São Paulo is examined, presenting an incentive program that could make this alternative fuel feasible even in smaller scale plants with minimal impact on NG costs in this state, while providing considerable emission reduction. The impact of VBG considering the increase in ethanol production over the next ten years is also evaluated, showing that substantial additional energy can be obtained and larger amounts of fossil fuels can be replaced. By crossing vinasse biogas potential with selected fossil fuels demand, the article brings insights to help the transition to a low-carbon society in a novel approach. The conclusions are that VBG and VBM can provide great benefits, such as USD 1 billion/year cost reductions and 6.7 million tons CO 2e /year emissions avoided by replacing fossil oil by biogas in power generation in Brazil and 3.2 million tons CO 2e /year avoided with biomethane replacing natural gas in the state of São Paulo, which, with specific programs and policies, could be achieved. • Vinasse biogas could replace fossil oil and natural gas in Brazil. • Electricity from vinasse biogas avoid GHG emissions at lower costs than oil plants. • Vinasse biomethane can replace natural gas in São Paulo with minimal cost increase. • Vinasse biogas can substitute more fossil fuels with increased ethanol production. This paper critically reviews the role of performance-based generative design in fast prototyping of buildings, describes the methodology of an automated generative layout design to produce complete building solutions, and presents a case study of multi-story buildings in urban context. The proposed approach evolves the building design solutions by interacting with the city 3D geometry and evaluates the energy consumption for air-conditioning. The building designs take into consideration urban geometric constraints and objectives, such as alignment with surrounding buildings, urban lot area, and relative and absolute position of the generated elements. During the evaluation process, the urban context is considered for casting shadows and reflecting solar radiation. The case study consists of six alternative 15-story buildings located in the city of São Paulo (Brazil), having commercial areas on the ground floor and two apartments per story on the remaining floors. The results show that, despite having similar apartments in every story, the urban context has a relevant impact on the buildings' energy performance. The difference between the apartments' best and worst energy performing stories ranges from 9% to 12% (ignoring the outlier story located in the first level), depending on the building solution. The results also show that the most energy efficient apartments' story is not located in the top or bottom floors, but rather at an intermediate level. • Urban context is added to an automatic floor plan generation procedure. • Alternative 15-story buildings are generated with residential and commercial spaces. • Energy consumption for air-conditioning is evaluated for every apartment. • Shadows and reflections from surroundings are evaluated during dynamic simulation. • Stories' energy performance vary from 9% to 12% despite having similar geometry.
