The energy and climate crises have accelerated the decarbonization of electric power systems. An important part of this decarbonization process, along with the incorporation of renewable and alternative energies, is the emergence of Carbon-neutral, intelligent systems technologies, coupled with digital transformation. These have brought new dynamics to the electric power systems transformation. Significant amounts of renewable energy, massive power electronics, changes in market planning, policy influence, demand response, and emerging technologies all become the essential components of new power systems, bringing remarkable changes to this new power systems' enabling technologies: IntelliSense. A novel IntelliSense framework driven by new power system requirements is proposed. The development status, classification characteristics, the application of intelligent sensors, intelligent sensor flexible charging, and multisource plus multidimensional big data processing are all discussed in detail. They are interspersed with discussions of critical features of new power systems, the uncertainties inherent in big data about power, wireless power transfer technologies, edge-fog-cloud collaborative computing, intelligent algorithms, and other core elements of IntelliSense. Finally, ten core IntelliSense technology challenges and five major future opportunities are summarized and are expected to serve as a reference and spark new ideas for low-carbon power system development. • This paper summarizes the state-of-the-art research on IntelliSense in NPS. • A novel technology-driven framework is proposed for the key role of IntelliSense in NPS. • New features of NPS are discussed, as well as their impact on IntelliSense. • The challenges and future directions for IntelliSense of NPS are discussed. The COVID-19 pandemic has dramatically altered global energy consumption, particularly affecting investment in renewable energy projects. In India, strict shelter-in-place orders enforced during March 2020 have since led to a considerable change in public and private sector investments in planned renewable energy installations. In this paper, we attempt to highlight trends in energy consumption and installed renewable energy capacity noted in India during a period concurrent with the shelter-in-place orders. We discuss recent policy measures and additions to installed renewable energy capacity, and propose key policy recommendations that may help the sector adopt a growth trajectory similar to one noted pre-pandemic. This paper is organized into four main parts. In the first section, we draw focus to India's renewable energy policies and pay special emphasis on recent interventions and campaigns targeted towards achieving high growth rates in the sector. We briefly discuss the need for effective public-private partnerships in order to meet these targets. In the second part, we quantitatively characterise the growth of renewables in India. We present an overview of several mechanisms and missions the government has launched in line with their policy to mitigate the environmental impact of India's energy mix. In the third part, we analyse the decrease in electricity demand in India from 24 March to 30 June 2020, a period concurrent with shelter-at-home orders issued by the Government. We also characterise changes in installed renewable energy capacity between March to December 2016–2020 to provide causal evidence of the effect of the pandemic on the growth of renewables. In this section, we also compile and analyse data on state-wise stressed assets across renewable energy generators in the country. Lastly, in the fourth and final portion of this paper, we highlight policy recommendations that may help the sector overcome logistical and financial bottlenecks in the short-term. We do this with the hope of outlining key measures that decision makers may employ to achieve pre-COVID sectoral growth in the long term. Our recommendations cover three different policy instruments: investment subsidies, operational subsidies, and recommendations for DISCOMs. • The increase in Indian renewable energy capacity installations between February to May 2020 hasseen an increment of 0.75%. • Daily electricity demand has decreased by 18.8% after the announcement of the shelter at home orders. • Immediate effects of the pandemic on the Indian renewable energy sector have been quantified. • A 3 tier system may be adopted to regulate incentives among renewable energy power producers. • Key policy recommendations to improve the fitness of the renewable energy sector have been discussed. South Asia, a developing region housing almost a quarter of the world population, faces stringent energy and environmental problems including acute vulnerability to climate change. To improve their socioeconomics and achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), it is imperative for South Asian countries to address their energy and environmental challenges. A thorough review of the national and regional achievements and challenges concerning SDGs is important for finding fast and sustainable solutions. This article aims to provide a comprehensive review of the energy and environmental outlook for the region taking into account the faced challenges and their potential solutions. It also aims to examine the prospects of the relevant SDGs taking into account the accomplishments and the faced challenges. It maps the progress South Asian countries have made towards the concerned seven SDGs - SDG6, SDG7, SDG11, SDG12, SDG13, SDG14, and SDG15-also identifying the challenges ahead. The article undertakes a thorough review of the literature including national and regional reports on energy and environmental scenarios and the SDGs. It finds that although South Asian countries have made considerable progress in power generation capacity and rural electrification, they face serious challenges with regard to SDG6, SDG7, and SDG11. South Asian countries need to benefit from their vast renewable energy potential and align their energy sectors with the trends of the unfolding sustainable energy transition. To achieve the targeted SDGs, concentrated efforts are required especially in terms of governmental support, budget allocation, and robust policy formulation and implementation. • The paper provides a comprehensive account of energy and environmental outlook for South Asia. • It examines South Asian countries' progress towards seven Sustainability Development Goals: SDG6, SDG7, SDG11, SDG12, SDG13, SDG14 and SDG15. • One billion people in South Asia lack access to clean cooking fuels while 350 million people are not connected to electric grid. • Regional energy trade is critical for these countries to duly benefit from their rich renewable energy resources. • South Asia needs to align itself with the trends of the unfolding sustainable energy transition. The current editorial summarized some of the scientific works presented in the Sustainable Energy and Environmental Protection (SEEP) conference-held at the University of the West of Scotland, UK, 2018. The selected work was directly related to the scope of the Renewable, Sustainable Energy Reviews (RSER) journal. During the conference activities, experts from all around the world in the subjects of: renewable energy, climate change, optimization, and economics presented and discussed the progress made in renewable energy sources, as well as the new strategies for protecting the environment from the hazards connected with fossil fuel utilization. The methods presented in the conference focused on several directions: the development of efficient energy conversion systems with low/no environmental impacts; the suggested policies to widespread renewable energies; the restriction in the emission of greenhouse gases, and the recent progresses in CO 2 capture.
