Plant operators and policy makers frequently use energy benchmarking to assess the potential for reducing energy consumption from industrial plants. As benchmarking studies require considerable resources and the cooperation of plant operators it is tempting to try to merge or compare data from different studies. This paper reviews published benchmarks and energy-saving estimates from the paper and pulp industries to explore how comparable data from independent studies are. A literature review was conducted which identified that benchmarks were either produced through a top-down process using annual production and fuel consumption data or through a bottom-up process from process-level data. It was concluded that top-down benchmarks are useful in measuring national trends but are of little value to individual plants. For common process such as Kraft pulp production it is possible to compare values from different studies but only if sufficient information is given in the original studies to confirm that their scope is identical. However, it is unlikely that improvement rates in energy use can be inferred from the difference between studies that use different sources, as the degree of disagreement between contemporary studies is of the same order as the identified potential energy savings. Based on recent developments, hydrogen-based combustion systems have received wide attention, mainly due to increasing awareness of enduring environmental pollutants and restricted access to fossil fuel usage. In the relevant literature, there are evidences of the possibilities on the partial or total replacement of hydrocarbon fuels with hydrogen in power plants and vehicle engines. However, some challenging issues particularly on hydrogen storage are remained to be resolved. This paper reviews and comments on addressing the effectiveness of hydrogen-enrichment on the engines and burners׳ performance includes the chemical kinetic analysis, the flame propagation structures and the effects of inhibitors on global burning velocity of hydrogen–hydrocarbon mixtures in different combustion bombs, chambers and vessels. Abstract: Coalbed methane (CBM) or coal seam gas (CSG) as it is known in Australia is becoming an increasingly important source of energy around the world. Many countries such as United States, Canada, Australia and China are investing in the CSG industry. A rise in the cost of conventional natural gas and many other energy resources, along with a decline in these conventional resources and issues such as climate change have encouraged a global interest in alternative sources of energy like CSG. The estimated quantity of CSG worldwide is around 1.4×1014 m3, it is clear that coal seam gas is a significant source of energy. The first section of this paper will discuss the production size of CSG worldwide and the future of the industry. The usage of the coal bed seam for the sequestration of CO2 is also an added benefit. The reduction of CO2 released to the environment may help in the future mitigation of global warming. In addition, the re-injecting of the co-produced CO2 enhances the commercial recovery and production of CSG wells. In the second section, the impact of the CSG industry's by-products on the environment, the freshwater ecosystem and human health are analysed. The second section includes issues associated with the large volume of co-produced water with undesirable composition in the CSG industry. The management of this enormous amount of water requires cost effective technologies and methods. Many methods for dealing with water problems are discussed and analysed in this paper. This paper explores opportunities for effective policy intervention for residential energy savings in southern China, by analyzing achievable potential of residential energy savings in the city of Xiamen as a case study. In contrast to static technical and economic potential analyses, the achievable potential analysis is based on dynamic energy consumption projections, which consider two real-world factors: (1) gradual ramping-up adoption process of advanced technical measures; and (2) consumers’ adoption of these measures. A bottom-up type Residential Energy Consumption (REC) projection model specifically tailored for southern China was developed in this paper, based on the general logic and calculation principles utilized in the U.S. EIA’s “National Energy Modeling System (NEMS),” and the adoption theory of advanced technical measures proposed by Kastovich. This REC projection model was then used as a policy analysis tool to quantitatively evaluate the impact of various policies on residential energy savings in the case study city of Xiamen. The analysis of the Xiamen case shows that although there is a significant technical potential for residential energy savings in the city (about 20.9–24.9%), the maximum achievable potential (MAP) in 2020 is only about 8.3–8.4% of that year’s business-as-usual baseline consumption. Moreover, with existing policies only about one-fourth to half of the calculated MAP is likely to be achieved by 2020. These findings indicate that in order to realize a larger share of achievable potential for residential energy savings in China, additional and more effective polices are needed. Brazil is a case of the achievement of a high share of wind energy integration to an interconnected power system in an emerging market. A series of successful energy supply programmes and a strong renewable-oriented finance framework implemented since 2002, have promoted alternative renewables – wind installed capacity increased over 22-fold from 927 MW in 2011 to 21 GW in 2022, reaching 11.77% of total procured power. From this, about 90% are concentrated in Brazil's least developed region, the Northeast, where wind investment should create jobs and propel socioeconomic development. Despite that, there is no studies specific assessing the regional and economy-wide effects of those programmes, gap that this paper aims to fill by applying the regional Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) model TERM-BR10. We assess that by modelling an alternative scenario for the period 2010-19 based on an official electricity matrix built in 2010, that projected 3.4 additional GW of wind power while not considering all the success of renewable policies, against the observed installed capacity expansion, where wind power was 3.7 times higher than what had been planned. Our results show that in the absence of renewable policies, Brazil would have faced economic losses such as GDP (−0.27%) and investment (−4.76%). The Northeast region would have been the most impacted in terms of GDP (−1.3%), real wage (−2.99%) and employment creation (−0.1%). Australia has significant offshore wind resources that can support ever-increasing power demand and hence provide a long-term contribution to the net-zero target by 2050. Although some offshore wind farm projects are proposed in Australia, the industry is not mature enough to justify the benefits and display economic opportunities. More specifically, the techno-economic analysis of offshore wind energy has not been systematically mapped in Australia. Therefore, the investigation of the spatial variation of technical feasibility and economic potential of offshore wind is vital to identify the potential regions and to develop strategies for future offshore wind farm developments in Australia. This paper presents detailed mappings of the techno-economic potential of offshore wind energy in Victoria-Tasmania's exclusive economic zone. Offshore wind energy resources are assessed in the paper in terms of energy availability and variability and the feasibility of various offshore wind technologies is investigated, including turbines, foundation types and transmission topologies. In addition, the high-fidelity life-cycle cost models and two innovative evaluation matrices are developed to assess the economic potential of offshore energy farms in South-eastern Australia. The impact of local power system regulation costs and future carbon prices on the viability of offshore wind is also investigated in this paper. China has been introducing reforms in the electricity market. Since 2016, electricity retailers are allowed to operate in the market once monopolized by traditional power companies. This regulatory environment demands new types of purchase contracts to remunerate the energy agents and deliver better prices for consumers fairly and sustainably. This paper proposes two new electricity purchase contracts with risk sharing mechanism and studies on wind power supplier's optimal capacity investment problem under supply and demand uncertainty. Firstly, a basic model for fixed demand contract is developed, and the optimal capacity is obtained. Secondly, the fixed commitment order contract and the forecast order contract with risk sharing mechanism are proposed to manage the fluctuation of wind power supply randomness. With backward induction, the optimal investment capacity of wind power supplier is solved, and then the fixed order quantity or forecast demand quantity of the electricity retailer can be obtained. Our results show that the fixed order quantity may have a positive influence on the wind power supplier's capacity investment decision. While, the forecast order quantity may have a negative influence on the wind power supplier's capacity investment decision. In addition, wind density has a strong influence on wind power capacity investment, and it has a positive impact on wind power supplier's profit, but it does not always have a positive impact on electricity retailer's profit. At last, based on numerical analysis, we examine how the wind density distribution coefficient change affect members' profit in the electricity supply chain. We also find that even with wind curtailment punishment, the forecast order contract can make a Pareto improvement on the whole electricity supply chain. Despite a substantial potential of renewable energy sources, the current energy supply system in Iran relies almost entirely on fossil fuel resources. It has imposed significant financial burden on the country and has led to considerable GHG emissions. Moreover, the country is confronting several challenges for harnessing alternative clean energy sources and promoting rational energy policies over the recent decades. To probe the root cause of these problems, this paper first provides an overview on the previous energy planning attempts in Iran. It shows that adequate commitment to a long-term energy planning could have meaningfully prevented these serious challenges. However, the previous studies have had some limitations in terms of employing appropriate planning tools, comprehensive evaluations, and scenarios definition and ranking. This paper thus proposes a power planning framework to assess the sustainability of future electricity scenarios for the period 2015–2050. MESSAGE, a systems engineering optimization model, is employed to evaluate the potential impacts of transitioning to a low-carbon electricity supply system. Using a combined AHP-TOPSIS method, the scenarios are then ranked based on 18 different techno-economic, environmental, and social dimensions of sustainability. As subsidies continue to fall, the technology and cost performance of distributed photovoltaic (PV) determines the progress of its grid parity. Based on the discussion of technology and cost, this paper analyzed the economic performance of China's distributed PV industry by utilizing the two indicators of levelized cost of energy (LCOE) and internal rate of return (IRR). The results show that: firstly, the current external environment is generally conducive to the development of distributed PV, but there are still some constraints. Secondly, with the decrease of unit investment cost, distributed PV can achieve the goal of parity before 2025. Thirdly, distributed PV projects in the three types of solar energy resources all have high IRR, and the economic performance is better for the projects with high proportion of spontaneous self-use. Ocean renewables (such as offshore wind and wave) are abundant and essential energy resources for supporting future emission-free targets. However, their energy intermittency and high cost have hindered commercialization and wide-scale implementations of these ocean energy technologies. This paper focuses on both issues and aims to increase the dispatchability of ocean energy farms by investigating the potential of a hybrid wind and wave energy platform with energy storage systems (ESS). This research introduces an innovative method to assess the necessary ESS capacity for offshore renewable energy farms, ensuring energy dispatchability to the local demand. In addition, the key criteria and the economic feasibility of deploying ESS in offshore energy farms are also discussed. A life-cycle cost model is presented that quantitatively compares different farm configurations, specifically a standalone offshore wind farm and a hybrid configuration incorporating both wind and wave generation systems. The results indicate that the combined wind and wave energy farm significantly reduces the ESS requirement and provides competitive lifecycle costs compared to the stand-alone wind energy farm, though the amount of these benefits vary on the local resource characteristics. The quantitative assessment presented in this study also provides realistic and practical justifications for combined energy farms that complement statistical conclusions derived from variability indexes in previous studies. The African continent is endowed with massive energy resources such as hydropower, solar, wind, natural gas, wave energy, and many more, yet it is the continent with the least energy supply in the world thereby resulting in a lack of sufficient energy to meet its growing energy demand. Though the continent holds 100 GW of wind capabilities, the current installed capacity as at 2018 was 5.7 GW with countries in northern Africa as well as South Africa capturing over 90% of the wind energy share on the continent. Therefore, this paper reviews the wind energy industry in Africa by identifying the current installed and potential capacity of wind energy on the continent. The challenges faced by the wind energy industry such as policy, competition, technical and economic are also reviewed. Transitions, technological innovation systems, and strategic niche management theoretical sustainability transition framework as well as proposed pathways to overcome these prevailing challenges hindering the full exploration of the wind energy sector in Africa are also highlighted in order to uplift the continent's socio-economic status. Basically, this can be achieved through the adoption of strong 'political-will' by African national governments to drive wind energy development. There is also the need for institutional frameworks to ensure the practical adoption of new wind energy technologies. Furthermore, the major benefits Africa stands to gain from investment in wind energy are enumerated by comparing with the benefits realized by other countries' economies as a result of investing in the wind energy industry. Abstract Energy systems are quickly evolving through the development of new technologies and the emergence of new operational and market design paradigms. In particular, the global push for sustainability is driving the transition towards a pronounced redesign. In fact, renewable energy integration is occurring at a massive scale, and several other exciting developments are finding their place in modern energy systems, such as distributed energy resources, demand response, energy storage technologies, and local energy markets. In this dynamic context, the process of energy policy design and implementation has found new challenges, and in supporting this key process, expansion planning models and tools can play an essential role. For example, these models can be employed to estimate the impact of a multitude of policy instruments. Thus, there is a wide interest in these tools and a variety of such models, as evidenced by a rich literature and a fast-paced evolution of this research area. Motivated by this, this work presents a comprehensive and up-to-date review on expansion planning models and tools with emphasis on their application to energy policy analysis. In particular, this paper reviews the most significant policy instruments, with an emphasis in renewable energy integration, the optimization models that have been developed for expansion planning, and existing decision-support tools for energy policy analysis. Finally, this paper also discusses the trends in the literature and the most pressing current challenges in the development and use of expansion planning models for energy policy analysis. Cameroon has an abundant reserve of energy resources, such as crude oil, natural gas, hydropower, biomass, solar, wind and geothermal energies. However, these resources are still weakly valorised. The country relies mainly on hydropower energy for electricity generation (73%) with persistent power outages throughout the country especially in the dry seasons when water levels are low. Electricity access is about 65–88% in urban areas and around 14% for rural populations. Cameroon has experienced a strong economic growth (growth rate of 5.9% in 2015), accompanied by a rapid increase in electricity demand (1455 MW in 2014). Electricity needs are expected to continue rising over the next decade to reach 5000 MW by 2020 and 6000 MW by 2030. This paper seeks to address energy issues (reliability, accessibility and security) in Cameroon and brings to light the potential and meaningful contributions of renewables in solving energy concern. In order to achieve this objective, an overview, of the energy sector (energy source, access, demand, supply and distribution) is given followed by a review of renewable energy potential, policy, benefits and barriers. In addition, this paper introduces the energy roadmap to achieve a universal access to electricity, which will pave the way for the country emergence by 2035. It is found that energy sector of Cameroon holds promising possibilities of development and diversification given the country's energy potential. With adequate policy, standards, regulations, awareness, capacity building and off-grid renewable energy investments measures, it is possible for Cameroon to meet the future energy targets and ensure meaningful development throughout the country. Jurisdictions around the world are responding the to potential of smart grids in different ways. This paper employs a multi-level perspective approach to socio-technological transitions to examine why the Canadian province of Ontario has seen a relatively smooth transition of smart meter technologies from the niche to regime levels as compared with other Canadian provinces, and other jurisdictions in the United States, European Union, and Australia. The paper also examines the reasons for Ontario's advanced legislative and policy framework around Smart Grid development, relative to those of other provinces. The complex institutional landscape around electricity that has emerged in Ontario since the break-up of the province's monopoly utility Ontario Hydro in the late 1990s emerges as a significant factor in both outcomes. The role of the province's municipally-owned LDCs spell out "local distribution companies (LDCs) as the primary agents for smart meter deployment, as opposed to a dominant vertically integrated utility, appears to have had an important mediating effect on public opposition to smart meters. With respect to Smart Grid policy, the diversity of high capacity institutional actors that now define the province's electricity policy landscape has facilitated the emergence of several interagency policy development niches. In a manner consistent with the concept of technological niches in the socio-technical transitions literature, the interagency status of these policy niches has shielded them from the regime level selective pressures that would likely have existed in a more unified institutional structure, and empowered new policy ideas to move from the niche to regime levels. These outcomes have significant implications for the understanding of socio-technological transitions, particularly around the role of institutional complexity in the emergence of niches for technology and policy development purposes and in niche to regime level transitions. This paper presents the editorial for the Renewable and Sustainable Energy Reviews joint special issue devoted to the research work discussed and presented at the 11th Conference on Sustainable Development of Energy, Water and Environment Systems (SDEWES), held from the 4th September to the 9th September 2016 in Lisbon, Portugal and the 2nd South East European (SEE) SDEWES Conference held from June 15th to June 18th, 2016 in Piran, Slovenia. This special issue is in line with the journal's aim of publishing research from across the ever-broadening field of renewable and sustainable energy with a strong review element. Previous SDEWES conference special issues have gathered a significant knowledge base in the field of sustainable development that reflects the continuous research efforts of the SDEWES research community. Therefore, this editorial provides not only an overview of the papers published in this particular special issue, but also a wider overview of the current trends in the domain of sustainable and renewable energy. This year's special issue focuses particularly on the benefits of the bio-based economy, energy security issues, fossil fuel thermal plant alternatives and environmental constraints, district heating and cooling together with cross sector energy efficiency and energy conservation issues. Sustainable transport systems, the issue of fuel poverty in urban neighbourhoods and renewable energy to support development of peripheral rural areas, optimising passive building design for hot climates and solar-powered heating and cooling are further topics featured in this special issue. In the process of selecting papers for this special issue, the guest editors invited in total 23 extended manuscripts for consideration for publication. Islanding operation in a distribution network connected to Distributed Generations (DGs) has the advantage of being able to continuously supply power to the loads even when disconnected from the grid. However, there are technical issues that need to be solved in order to guarantee a successful islanding operation. The main challenge in the successful islanding operation is to ensure the stability of frequency and voltage of the distribution system. Commonly load shedding schemes are used as a mechanism to stabilize the magnitude of the frequency and the voltage by shedding some of the loads to ensure an adequate balance between generation and loads. This paper reviews recent load shedding schemes focusing on distribution system application. Their respective merits and demerits are presented. Moreover, this paper also highlights the application of Voltage Stability (VS) index for load shedding schemes. In the United Arab Emirates (UAE), buildings consume almost 90% of the total electricity used in the country. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of recent trends in energy consumption in the building sector as well as current efforts in promoting energy efficiency within UAE. Moreover, the paper explores available opportunities to improve energy efficiency of the UAE building sector. In particular, the impacts of three levels of energy retrofits are quantified based on results from existing literature and an optimization-based bottom-up analysis for residential, commercial, and governmental buildings. The analysis indicates that any level of energy retrofit for the existing building stock can be effective in reducing energy consumption and peak power demand as well as in lowering carbon emissions for UAE. It is estimated that a basic energy retrofit program applied to existing UAE building stock could achieve savings of 7550 GWh/year in electricity consumption, 1400 MW in peak electricity demand and reduce carbon emissions by 4.5 million tons/year per year. Canada's cellulosic ethanol biorefinery concept is supported by federal and provincial government legislative ethanol mandates as well as enabling science and innovation policies for technology development to support the economic and sustainable production of cellulosic ethanol and co-products from Canada's abundant supply of lignocellulosic agricultural and forestry biomass. In particular, the development of pretreatment, hydrolysis, and fermentation technologies is regarded as a critical integrating step for the commercialization of cellulosic ethanol biorefinery business concepts. These critical steps are necessitated by the chemical structure of lignocellulosic biomass comprising carbohydrate polymers and lignin which constrains the ability of enzymes to convert these polymers into fermentable sugars without expensive and highly capital intensive pretreatment processes. This paper reviews science and innovation efforts by Canadian researchers in finding solutions to these constraints, in particular the development of hydrolysis and fermentation technologies. This paper also highlights the role of multi-institutional science and innovation collaborative approaches for advancing Canada's cellulosic ethanol biorefinery concept further downstream. While highlighting Canada's scientific progress, this review also outlines technology commercialization lags between basic research and full scale commercialization of a Canadian cellulosic ethanol biorefinery concept. Although this paper focuses on the near-term goal of cellulosic ethanol production, it nevertheless recognizes that ethanol is only the first step in the longer-term goal aimed at a full integrated bioconversion of lignocellulosic biomass into biofuels and a wide range of value-added biochemicals and biomaterials, consistent with the cellulosic biorefinery concept. Renewable energy is expected to become the main electricity source in the world in the coming decades, with solar and wind power taking a big share of the energy supply. Although there has been a remarkable advance on renewable energy technologies, their integration is still difficult for regulators, market designers and system operators due to the high variability and limited predictability of solar and wind resources. Measures can be adopted to ease their integration, among them geographical diversification. There is plenty of literature about the diversification of solar and wind resources and there is a common conclusion: greater dispersion smooths out power production. However, literature on the effects of spatial diversification on the power system, electricity prices and renewable energy market value is much scarcer. This paper studies the effects of spatial diversification and questions whether integration policies are incentivizing the placement of renewable generators where they provide the highest value to the electricity system in Chile. Using real data and a simplified dispatch model the analysis presented shows evidence of the effects of diversification on wind and solar market value in Chile. Results suggest that spatial diversification has a strong positive effect on the market value of renewable energy, especially in scenarios with active transmission and hydro-storage constraints. Wind market value may vary up to US$10/MW h depending on the level of diversification and the spatial and temporal constraints of the system and, given current storage capacity of hydro reservoirs, the solar market value may increase US$5/MW h due to diversification if transmission capacity is enough. Worldwide, more than a billion rural dwellers live without electricity. Billions more endure awfully intermittent service even when connected to the grid. Most of these access challenged communities are in the Global South and may benefit from surging spread of distributed energy resources. However, associated investment necessity is large and so is the time required to address infrastructural bottlenecks. Recognising criticality of universal access to affordable, eco-friendly and reliable electricity in inclusive human development, the United Nations adopted 'affordable and clean energy' as one of the Sustainable Development Goals. To treasure electricity access, measurement of the same is important. The evolution of electricity access measurement has given rise to multi-tier, multi-parameter matrix. This improved measurement framework has facilitated researchers and policymakers in capturing various electricity access parameters in order to script focused energy strategy for the common man. This paper studies electricity availability, consumer aspiration and prevailing consumption in an impoverished, isolated, high-altitude valley, nestled in the Himalayas in India. It outlines evolving technology-aided, access measurement supported innovative access tier advancement opportunities in the valley. The result underscores the importance of consumer-focused approach for improving infrastructure utilisation. Consumer collaboration may result in fast, economical access advancement. Supply reliability may transform from abrupt complete disruption to gradual, cognisant decay. Regional integrated energy systems (RIES) have garnered increased attention because they highly utilize renewable energy, comprehensive efficiency, and flexible operation. However, the current research on RIESs is mainly based on burning natural gas and supplemented by renewable energy, which will consumes much primary energy and generates corresponding carbon emissions. Therefore, a RIES contained various renewable energy sources and station energy sharing was constructed in this paper. Both the collaborative optimization model, which considered the operating parameters and system configuration, and the hierarchical optimization model, which optimizes the equipment configuration at the upper layer and the operational parameters at the underlayer, were constructed, respectively. Taking a multi-function low-carbon park as an example, the isolated integrated energy system (IIES) and RIES performances were explored. Finally, the operation cost, carbon emission, and interactive power in the separated production system, IIES and RIES were analyzed and discussed from a long-short time scale perspective. The results showed that the carbon emission, interactive power, and energy supply cost of the RIES's unit area are 7.62 kg/m2, 10.07 kWh/m2, and 40.55 CNY/m2, respectively. Long time scale perspective (Years or months), RIESs could significantly reduce carbon emissions and interactive power. Due to increasing amounts of energy being supplied by intermittent renewable energy sources, future energy systems need to be able to react flexibly to sudden changes. To address this challenge, a large body of research is devoted to improving the utilization of energy flexibility of various types of energy resources on the supply and demand side. This is commonly done by applying mathematical models. The objective of this paper is to review such models and identify common modeling approaches used to quantify and optimize the use of flexible energy resources. The literature review is conducted systematically, encompassing 215 publications that feature 694 models of different energy resources. The main distinction of this work, in comparison to other reviews on the topic of energy flexibility lies in its focus on the mathematical formulation of models of energy resources and the quantification of the models' level of detail. The aim is to identify common modeling approaches and the corresponding research problems they address. The review shows that the majority of research efforts are directed towards the management and optimization of distributed energy resources. The most commonly employed modeling approach involves abstract black-box models with limited levels of detail. Linear programming and meta-heuristics are frequently used to optimize energy flexibility. A critical reflection of the current common practice is conducted and recommendations for future research are formulated. The centralised power grid bears a heavy burden in a time when consumers expect an uninterrupted reliable power supply, a reduction in carbon emissions, increased efficiency within the national grid and power supplied to remote communities. As expectations increase, it becomes the task of power systems research and design to develop new structures to meet these demands. This has led to alternatives being sought for centralised power generation, which is prone to outages (due to long distance transmission), is a substantial contributor to global carbon emissions, has large transmission losses and is often not a practical solution when supplying remote communities. Distributed generation (DG) looks to remedy these inadequacies by producing power close to its point of consumption, often utilising carbon neutral, renewable energy (RE) sources (sun, wind). To maximise the efficient use of DG, control structures are used to balance the intermittent RE power production with consumer power consumption. One such structure is used to implement control of small scale DG, at a single house/small building level: the nanogrid. This paper explores the current nanogrid research, it collates the existing definitions and uses the knowledge to give a concise definition of a nanogrid. It then discusses the control topologies and techniques which enable the intelligent control of the nanogrid, before presenting the hardware platform used to ensure the efficient operation of a small scale DG system. The paper then considers the interconnection of multiple nanogrids forming a network (microgrid), facilitating the sharing of power between individual nanogrids. Recognizing the multidimensional role that hydropower can potentially play in achieving a more sustainable energy supply system, this paper reviews a series of published economic, environmental and social indicators that are often used to characterize this energy source. Getting the right balance between measures assessing benefits and costs is often a challenge in complex evaluations. The current paper argues that present studies sometimes set system boundaries too narrowly so that they omit key factors associated with hydropower. In particular, the role that hydroelectric resources can play to stabilize the overall electrical grid, and thus to leverage investments in other intermittent renewables, is only rarely accounted for in sustainability assessments. Based on a broad literature review, the authors articulate two key recommendations for future assessments: first, that such assessments should reflect on policy issues as well as environmental challenges with respect to existing hydropower potential within the current framework; second, that system boundaries should be extended not only to allow broad hydrological, ecological and geological assessments, but also to reasonably estimate hydro's potential benefits to the functioning of the overall electrical grid. This paper presents an overview about the hydro-thermal scheduling problem. In an electrical power system power generators have to be scheduled over a time horizon in order to supply system demand. The scheduling problem consists in dispatching the available generators to meet the system electric load while minimizing the operational costs related to fuel and possible load curtailments. In a system with a large share of hydro generation, different from a thermal dominant power system, the uncertainty of water inflows play an important role in the decision-making process. In this setting the scheduling of generators has to be determined considering different future possibilities for water availability. Also, in the existence of a cascade system, the availability of water to produce electricity in hydro plants is influenced by decisions taken in upstream reservoirs. These issues complicate the hydro-thermal scheduling problem that often in the literature is modeled as a multi-stage stochastic program. Variability and intermittency are some of the main features that characterize renewable energy sources. Intermittency usually includes both predictable and unpredictable variations. The many drawbacks of intermittency of renewable sources can be overcome by considering some special design considerations. Integrating more than one renewable energy source and including backup sources and storage systems are among the few measures to overcome these drawbacks. These additional design considerations usually increase the overall cost of the renewable system. Furthermore, the presence of more than one energy supply/storage system requires the control of energy flow among the various sources. Therefore, optimizing the size of the components and adopting an energy management strategy (EMS) are essential to decreasing the cost of the system and limiting its negative effects. The energy management strategy is commonly integrated with optimization to ensure the continuity of load supply and to decrease the cost of energy production. Therefore, energy management is a term that collects all the systematic procedures to control and minimize the quantity and the cost of energy used to provide a certain application with its requirements. The energy management strategy usually depends on the type of energy system and its components. Various approaches and techniques have been used to develop a successful energy management strategy. In this paper, a comprehensive review of the approaches proposed and used by authors of many papers is conducted. These approaches include both the standalone hybrid renewable energy systems and the grid-connected hybrid renewable systems. More attention is focused on popularly used techniques to address the features of each system. Switching ripple filters (SRF) is one of the significant part of grid connected voltage source converters (VSC) that have been a backbone of the most of renewable energy systems for the last decade. SRFs have two main features for the grid connected VSC systems. One of these is to maintain a coupling connection and integration between grid and VSC. The other one is to prevent the penetration of switching ripple currents to the grid by filtering them. Several SRF topologies named as L, LC, LCL and LLCL type are presented in literature. In order to maintain effective switching ripple filtering, higher order SRF topologies are developed. However, these high order SRFs have resonance problems. To overcome resonance problems of higher order SRFs, passive and active damping methods are applied to SRFs. This paper presents a comprehensive review of SRFs used in grid connected VSCs. In the scope of this paper, the characteristics and the design procedures of SRFs are investigated. Stand-alone micro-grids (MGs) and grid-connected MGs with high penetration level of Distributed Generation (DG) are growing at a fast rate. In these grids, the power quality disturbances such as harmonics, inter-harmonics and deviation from the fundamental frequency are widespread. The influence of these disturbances on two categories of digital metering algorithms is evaluated in this paper. The first category is related to the measurement of the fundamental frequency component of current and voltage signals, which are used as inputs of the digital protection algorithms. Most of the relays only use fundamental frequency component of their input voltage and current signals to fulfill the desired protective functions. The accuracy of the protective relays highly depends on the performance of the applied algorithms for extracting the fundamental components. The second evaluated category is related to the reactive power calculation algorithms, which are used in the static VAr compensator (SVC) control system. Utilizing SVC is growing due to the DGs such as wind turbines magnify voltage fluctuations called flicker. Since the SVC compensates only the reactive power related to the fundamental frequency component, the reactive power signal should not be sensitive to the harmonics. In addition, the reactive power calculation should be fast enough that SVC can follow the abrupt changes to mitigate the flicker, efficiently. In this paper, frequency deviation, harmonic, and inter-harmonic phenomena are considered as the most causes for power quality problems. Their influence in digital metering algorithms is evaluated. It is confirmed that defining new indices is mandatory to fully reflect algorithms׳ accuracy and efficiency. Operation of distributed energy resources and resilience related problems are becoming of most importance in the pursuit for a more sustainable electricity delivery. Microgrids (MGs) could contribute significantly to both issues and may play an important role in the new decentralized paradigm of power systems. This paper proposes a hierarchical organizational scheme of MGs with a clear distinction of the Microgrid, Nanogrid and Picogrid concepts, and addresses a detailed technical literature review to identify and classify MGs main features and design alternatives. Definitions; descriptions of MGs, Nanogrids, Picogrids; operation modes; business models and communication protocols are dispersed in the literature. In order to gather clearly all the existing information, this review has been organized according to four functional layers, inspired by the ones commonly used in Smart Grid architecture description. For each one and whenever possible, the paper classifies the outcomes of the review in a table kind of format that helps summarizing the different MGs׳ options. Regarding the first layer, the paper describes the different physical devices involved in MGs, such as generators, converters, electric vehicles (EV) and energy storage systems (DS) and the DC levels that are being discussed. For the second layer the paper addresses a review of the communication protocols currently used or proposed. Then, the intelligence layer is analyzed concerning any decision making issue related to operation and planning of the MGs as well as any other aspect that may be relevant for taking advantage of MGs potentiality. In the last layer, the paper reviews different business models adapted to a future where MGs will be deployed. South Korea's new energy transition policy was declared in 2017 as citizen demand grew for solutions to safety problems caused by successive earthquakes affecting areas with many nuclear power plants in 2016 and 2017 as well as health problems caused by coal-fired power plants contributing to high condensable particulate matter in spring. This policy focuses on both a reduction in nuclear and coal-fired power plants and further development of eco-friendly and sustainable power generation and supply. The South Korean government is thus planning a large-scale transition toward improved energy efficiency as well as safe and clean energy sources. Its announced goal is to supply a 20% share of renewable energy in the national energy mix, including 37 GW of photovoltaic power, 3 GW of onshore wind power, and 13 GW of offshore wind power by 2030; the latter is expected to play a strategic role in the Renewable Energy 2030 plan. As South Korea's geographic conditions enable large-scale offshore wind farm projects that are relatively free from complaints and visual effects caused by transportation, installation, noise, vibration, and damage to natural environments, it is highly likely that wind power will become one of the nation's major renewable electricity sources. This paper discusses the potential for developing offshore wind farm projects in South Korea with particular focus on analyzing offshore resources and reviewing government policies and support programs that could limit or otherwise challenge the deployment of such projects, with further considerations of policy choices that could improve the deployment of offshore wind power. Abstract Hydrothermal carbonization is an important thermochemical conversion process that can be used as an energy-efficient alternative to enhance the dewaterability of sewage sludge and meanwhile to convert sewage sludge into high value-added products, such as clean biofuel, organic fertilizer and precursors of functional materials. This paper presents an overview of the latest development of hydrothermal carbonization in the field of sewage sludge treatment, with a particular focus on critical hydrothermal parameters, physicochemical characteristics of products streams, current understanding on hydrochar formation mechanisms, sewage sludge dewaterability improvement and techno-economic advantages. Recent advances have shown that hydrothermal carbonization of sewage sludge is an exothermal process, which is governed by temperature to a large extent. Both polymerizations of highly reactive intermediates derived from degradation of biopolymers in sewage sludge and solid-solid conversion of their undissolved fractions are regarded as the major mechanisms of hydrochar formation. The high ash content of hydrochar is probably the limiting factor for its potential applications in energy and functional materials. The chemistry in hydrothermal carbonization of sewage sludge, closely related to the process parameters and the chemical composition of sewage sludge, offers huge potential to influence the products distribution and characteristics and the process energetics as desired, which provides a promising opportunity to construct a high-efficiency industrial chain for energy and resources recovery from sewage sludge by a controlled hydrothermal process. This review identifies the current challenges and knowledge gaps, and provides new perspectives for future research efforts targeting at sustainable treatment of sewage sludge by hydrothermal carbonization. Abstract Circular Economy has emerged as a popular research topic that is shaping public policy in Europe, China, America and elsewhere. It complements the conceptual basis of the Industrial Ecology framework, but places more emphasis on business models to create closed-loop material systems. However, the Circular Economy concept currently lacks robust engineering design methods, leading to many researchers question its effectiveness. In contrast, Process Integration is lesser known publicly, despite being widely applied in industry to achieve substantial reductions in industrial energy, water, and utility use. These three areas have developed in parallel with minimal cross-pollination, but are in fact potentially complementary. This contribution proposes the new unified concept of Circular Integration for greater transdisciplinary research cohesiveness in the sustainable development of processes, industries, and economies. Circular Integration combines elements from Process Integration, Industrial Ecology, and Circular Economy into a multi-dimensional, multi-scale approach to the minimisation of resource and energy consumption. Circular Integration thus provides an engineering toolbox for planning a Sustainable and Circular Economy. To demonstrate its potential, the paper presents a case study on sustainable biofuel production. The possible solution leverages existing industrial resources to potentially produce enough fuel to fulfil 37% of current demand for global air and marine transport. The Circular Integration framework can also be generalised to systems other than transport and energy, aiming to catalyse greater transdisciplinary research for the analysis, design, and implementation of sustainable and circular systems. Abstract Worldwide, the demand for energy has increased significantly in last two decades, leading to an increased use of non-renewable energy resources. The global agenda aims to reduce the carbon intensity of energy in long-term climate change mitigation strategies, and to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG-7) on affordable and clean energy. Use of renewable energy (RE) can contribute to reducing global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions while providing incremental financial resources to stimulate clean development mechanisms. Hydropower continues to be the leading RE option and has the additional benefits of water storage for agriculture and other uses. Drawing on the position of four Hindu Kush Himalayan (HKH) countries – Bangladesh, India, Nepal and Pakistan – this paper investigates the current status of hydropower generation and related policies, and attempts to identify the key challenges to and opportunities for hydropower development in the region. Collectively, four HKH countries have commercially feasible hydropower potential of nearly 190 GW. However, only one-third of this potential has actually been tapped so far. Nepal and Pakistan have tapped 2% and 12%, respectively, of their hydropower potential. The current hydropower supply has not been able to fulfill the electricity demand in the region, where 26–37% of the rural population is living without access to electricity, and future demand for electricity is likely to increase sharply. There are several economic, social, technical, environmental, ecological and political challenges to hydropower production in the HKH countries. Despite these challenges, hydropower remains an important option for achieving renewable energy goals in the region. To achieve these goals, we suggest capitalizing on emerging opportunities such as large hydropower development using a 'smart approach', micro-hydropower promotion, energy trade, and regional cooperation for collective energy development programs. Abstract The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) forms the core of China's foreign policy and future foreign cooperation, and energy cooperation is an important component of the BRI. Energy security is closely related to the interdependent relations between countries. The present paper investigates energy interdependent relations between China and the countries along the Belt and Road using data collected in the BP Statistical Review of World Energy , between 2000 and 2015. The main results are as follows: (1) Abundant proven reserves of energy resources exist in these countries, which were equivalent to 758.73 billion tons of standard coal in 2015, accounting for 52.27% of the world. The distribution of these resources presents a pattern with two centers—one in Russia, and one in West Asia and the Middle East. (2) Established interdependence relations exist between China and the countries along the Belt and Road in terms of energy cooperation. China has imported 437.21 million tons of standard coal from these countries and their guarantee degree to China's energy security is 58.42%, of which 13.56% refers to coal, 73.37% to oil, and 13.06% to gas. Meanwhile, their dependence degree in energy exports to China was 13.56%, or 11.15% for coal, 14.92% for oil, and 10.55% for gas. An interdependence relation thus exists between China and these countries, and the degree of mutual dependence between them was 0.23 (0.22 for coal, 0.13 for oil, and 0.38 for gas), locating China in a relatively passive position with respect to the countries along the Belt and Road as a whole, but a relatively active position in relation to individual countries (with the exception of Russia). Our findings are useful to the tasks of identifying the spatial distribution pattern of energy in countries along the Belt and Road, assisting in the promotion of energy cooperation between China and these countries, and the future construction of the BRI. Abstract Among the various agri-food sub-sectors, sugar production is specifically ranked among the top energy-intensive industries in which massive amounts of various fossil energy carriers are used during sugar beet processing jeopardizing the environmental sustainability of the whole industry. Among the various solutions introduced to date, using renewable energies to supply power to this industry could be regarded as a promising approach to reduce the environmental concerns faced by this sector. In such context, energy from waste could be the most favorable alternative to meet power requirements of the industry. This review paper starts with reviewing the latest situation of sugar production and sugar beet cultivation around the world. Principal sugar beet processing stages as well as different waste-to-energy (WTE) techniques are also reviewed and discussed. In order to evaluate the impacts of the proposed solution, i.e., WTE for power generation in beet sugar industry, two factories located in Iran were considered as case studies and subsequently, the implementation of a kind of waste-oriented electricity as an alternative to fossil-based electricity (conventionally consumed in the factories) was investigated. Moreover, the environmental hotspots in the sugar beet processing factories were determined for further possible improvements. Overall, it was found out that implementing renewable bioelectricity in the studied sugar factories could considerably reduce the environmental burdens; i.e., 14.11–15.41% in human health, 1.49–1.54% in ecosystem quality, 4–4.4% in climate change, and 4.18–4.87% in resources damage categories. Abstract Poor households in Germany and those that are close to the poverty line are more likely to suffer from increases in electricity costs. One consequence of this is the increasing number of cases in which the supplier disconnects a household's power. According to the Federal Network Agency (Bundesnetzagentur), a total of almost 359,000 interruptions of the electricity supply were caused in 2015 due to outstanding payments. In order to avoid disconnection from the electricity grid, more and more utility companies have begun to offer prepayment meters (PPMs) to their customers as a response to outstanding payments and a growing number of customers owing debts to their energy supplier. The phenomenon of an increasing number of households affected by energy poverty in Germany is new, and thus the number of PPMs is still low. As a result, experiences in this context are – compared to other countries (e.g. Great Britain) – far from extensive, and political awareness of the problem is low. Abstract Security of energy supply and the threat of climate change are the key challenges that define the further development of EU energy systems. The security of supply problem follows other problems such as energy and material scarcity, import dependency and waste generation. These problems can be alleviated via development of a low-carbon, sustainable, competitive and resource-efficient economy. One of the pillars of this approach is a circular economy and "closing the loop" approach. Integrated waste management system can close the loop, not only material-wise, through material recovery, but also energy-wise, by using energy from waste to drive whole waste management and recovery chain. Such approach is utilized in this paper through tracking of each energy vector and calculating coverage of energy needs inside the analysed systems. Energy analysis is accepted approach for sustainability assessment of the various products and systems, where primary energy consumption approach is mostly used. By combining these two approaches, the impact of closing the loop material- and energy-wise on the sustainability of the recycled materials is assessed by analysing to which degree can the embodied energy of recycled materials be reduced. The results of the analysed city case study show that energy recovery can satisfy up to 60/50% (in 2020/2030) of the total energy needs of the analysed system; in 2030 38% of waste routed to energy recovery (from which 25% to anaerobic digestion and the rest to the incinerator) satisfies around 50% of energy needs. This internal (partial) coverage of systems energy needs can additionally reduce embodied energy of recycled materials, and increase their sustainability (primarily lowered by material recovery) by 11–67% at the same time. From these results it can be concluded that energy recovery of waste could help to "close the loop" in the whole waste recovery mindset. Abstract This paper presents the steps taken by the Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO), the nation's only utility, to overcome limitations involved in increasing renewable energy penetration in an effort to support the government's movement for renewable energy expansion. While the government proposes reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 37% of the Business As Usual (BAU) value by 2030, which is about 315 million tonnes, it has improved energy policies for developing and deploying renewable energy technologies. To facilitate the integration of renewable energy into the future Korean power system, the government has announced a guaranteed interconnection policy for renewable energy sources under 1 MW. Based on this movement, the following measures have been enacted. First, examination of the hosting capacity of the current power system has been initiated to streamline the interconnection process for the distributed renewable energy sources and to reinforce the transmission and distribution network in a proactive manner. Second, to comply with reliability performance standards, an efficient planning procedure has been established for determining the optimal location and size of a renewable complex. To proceed with interconnection requests without delay, a prototype of a Renewable Energy Map (REM) based on PSS/e and Python has been developed. This tool facilitates more practical impact studies by incorporating capacity factors of renewable sources. In addition, it automates the screening process for determining suitable interconnection buses and feasible options for grid reinforcement. This tool is a step toward realizing the twin visions of "G-Platform" and "Carbon Zero" projects in Jeju Island." These efforts, which have been initiated in response to the Paris Climate Change Accord of 2015 and the 23rd Conference of the Parties 2017, aim to increase renewable energy from 7% to 20% of the total generated energy in Korea by 2030. Abstract The Renewable energy power generation capacity has been rapidly increasing in China recently. Meanwhile, the contradiction between power supply and demand is becoming increasingly more prominent due to the intermittence of renewable energies. On the other hand, on the mitigation of carbon dioxide (CO 2) emissions in China needs immediate attention. Power-to-Gas (PtG), a chemical energy storage technology, can convert surplus electricity into combustible gases. Subsurface energy storage can meet the requirements of long term storage with its large capacity. This paper provides a discussion of the entire PtG energy storage technology process and the current research progress. Based on the comparative study of different geological storage schemes for synthetic methane, their respective research progress and limitations are noted. In addition, a full investigation of the distribution and implementation of global PtG and CO 2 capture and storage (CCS) demonstration projects is performed. Subsequently, the opportunities and challenges of the development of this technology in China are discussed based on techno-economic and ecological effects analysis. While PtG is expected to be a revolutionary technology that will replace traditional power systems, the main issues of site selection, energy efficiency and the economy still need to be adequately addressed. Additionally, based on the comprehensive discussion of the results of the analysis, power-to-gas and subsurface energy storage implementation strategies, as well as outlook in China are presented. Malaysia's framework for energy development was established in the early 1970s. Henceforth, many successive policies were introduced as potential resources for electricity generation and utilization. Currently, as a signatory to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, Malaysia is sparing a number of effort to comply with the policy to meet the challenges of mitigating over-dependence on fossil fuels, reducing carbon levels, and achieving sustainable national development. This paper reviews the baseline studies on electrical energy policies and the measurement indicators used in Malaysia's electric power system. This research involves a comprehensive survey of electrical energy policies in Malaysia that focus on issues pertaining to energy supply, utilization, its environmental impact and considerations, renewable energy (RE) policies, production and consumption, energy efficiency, and feed-in tariffs. Fourteen energy indicators for sustainable development in Malaysia were investigated through the identification of energy policies in significant areas, such as reliability, safety, adequacy and cost-effectiveness of energy supply; increasing energy efficiency; minimizing environmental impact; and enhancing quality of life in terms of social well-being. The policies and the indicators are classified into different sustainable dimensions and summarized in tables along with the corresponding key references. In this study, future energy planning and options, especially in nuclear and RE programs, as well as the conflict between them, are illustrated through the overall performance relative to targets and benchmarks for past and future projections up to the year 2030. This review seeks to examine the past, present, and future policies and indicators to provide a sufficient overview of Malaysian energy policies for optimizing sustainable development. The goal is for this review to lead to increased efforts to accommodate the increasing demand for the management and utilization of RE, promote energy efficiency, and improve performance in achieving sustainable national development. Emission Trading Scheme (ETS) has become one of the most popular ways to meet CO 2 reduction targets owing to its flexibility and cost effectiveness. This paper applies game theory to analyze the impacts of direct and indirect costs derived from ETS on enterprise's competitiveness and supply partnership. By emphasizing the role of carbon intensity, the results illustrate that an enterprise with lower carbon intensity will have stronger capability to ease the pressures of both direct and indirect costs. From the perspective of direct cost, when reducing carbon intensity to a certain extent, the enterprise will take the advantage of carbon competitiveness to further expand the market share. The enterprise with low carbon intensity can even increase its product output amount instead of damaging it. From the perspective of indirect cost, a downstream manufacturer with lower carbon intensity is more likely to obtain the favor of suppliers. If choosing a downstream partner with high carbon intensity, the supplier may need to reduce the price of its product to ensure the product's demand and profits. Therefore, the implementation of ETS will drive suppliers to choose low-carbon partners, resulting in low-carbon supply partnerships replacing the original one. Based on a numerical example combing with the investigation in Hubei ETS pilot, this research argues for the enlightenment, and implications, of carbon quota constraints as a part of China's emission reduction policies. Between 60% and 80% of global energy is consumed in urban areas and given the projected increase in world׳s urban population, this share is expected to further increase in the future. Continuity of energy supply in cities is affected by climate change and a growing array of other threats such as cyber attacks, terrorism, technical deficiencies, and market volatility. Determined efforts, acknowledging the interactions and interlinkages between energy and other sectors, are needed to avoid adverse consequences of disruption in energy supply. Resilience thinking is an approach to management of socio-ecological systems that aims to develop an integrated framework for bringing together the (often) fragmented, diverse research on disaster risk management. The literature on urban resilience is immense and still growing. This paper reviews literature related to energy resilience to develop a conceptual framework for assessing urban energy resilience, identify planning and design criteria that can be used for assessing urban energy resilience, and examine the relationship of these criteria with the underlying components of the conceptual framework. In the conceptual framework, it is proposed that in order to be resilient, urban energy system needs to be capable of “planning and preparing for”, “absorbing”, “recovering from”, and “adapting” to any adverse events that may happen in the future. Integrating these four abilities into the system would enable it to continuously address “availability”, “accessibility”, “affordability”, and “acceptability” as the four sustainability-related dimensions of energy. The paper explains different resilience principles associated with these abilities and sustainability dimensions. Also, different planning and design criteria were extracted from the literature and categorized into five themes: infrastructure; resources; land use, urban geometry and morphology; governance; and socio-demographic aspects and human behavior. Examination of the relationship of these criteria with the underlying components of the conceptual framework highlighted the complexity and multi-faceted nature of energy resilience. Exploration of the relevance of the identified criteria to climate change mitigation and adaptation revealed that most of the identified criteria can provide both mitigation and adaptation benefits. The population of Pakistan is increasing rapidly and hence the energy demand. Since ninety׳s, people of Pakistan has been experiencing load shedding because of the intense shortfall throughout the country. Pakistan, being an agricultural country, has a lot of potential of renewable energy sources especially biomass. The thing is to utilize the potential in a right direction. This paper presents the policy direction to get rid of the current energy crisis in the country through utilization of different types of biomass. The animal manure, municipal solid wastes and the crop residues are the main biomass sources in the country. This study also focuses the potential of main biomass sources present in the country and its technical routes for the production of bioenergy. The design parameters for standard bioreactor of gasifier and anaerobic digestion and their economic comparison are highlighted with respect to Pakistan environmental conditions. The development of anaerobic digestion technology is reviewed critically. This paper also discusses the different scenarios for the use of biomass sources in urban and rural environment. This verifies the use of biogas energy as the cheapest and the safest way to remove the crisis from the country. Nuclear power has gradually become one of the key parts in power supply structure due to its environmental benefits, effective productivity and steady operation. However, complicated system, high investment and derivative security issues make it difficult to develop in a large scale. Nowadays, faced with serious challenges from environment protection, fossil fuel lacking and upgrading of industrial structure, China are taking measures to promote nuclear power industry to realize sustainable development. China׳s nuclear power industry has achieved large achievements in industrial policy, technical and economic condition during the last three decades. However, there still exist problems impeding its future development. Therefore, this paper first analyzes the external environment and historical stages of nuclear power industry in China. Applications of multiagent systems (MAS) in power engineering are of particular importance. However, little effort exists to provide an insight in MAS applications from the lens of power engineering practitioners. This paper is first in examining state of the art of MAS in power engineering. A comprehensive literature review is conducted and a novel taxonomy associated with research concerning MAS applications in power engineering is proposed. The paper shows that MAS is adaptable and applicable with different power engineering categories. The paper also concludes that the applications of MAS in different aspects of modern power systems, like planning, market, management, operation, control, monitoring and protection are anticipated to be of significance in the development smart grids. The significant variation in building׳s energy intensity is partly due to the large number of distributed energy users characterized by heterogeneous lifestyles and nonuniform consumption behaviours. Understanding the degree of variation and its cause is critical to designing appropriate policies for energy efficiency improvement. This paper aims to provide a data-based benchmark of buildings energy performance in China and investigates the facts and causes of large variations in energy consumption across buildings based on updated and harmonised dataset. Specifically, the paper is the first in literature to decompose aggregate heating consumption in northern urban China and reallocate the disaggregate data to relevant residential and commercial building energy use, which makes it consistent to conduct international comparison of building performance in terms of primary energy intensity. It is found that buildings energy performance exhibits a sizeable heterogeneity varying with building typology and climate zones in China. Heating and cooling energy consumption for residential buildings located in HSCW climate zone may differ by a factor of 4–10 depending on the technology and energy supply mode, whereby nontechnical interventions may have significant impacts on total energy demand in the built environment. In particular, our analysis results point to the importance of making greater efforts in the commercial sector. Commercial buildings are found significantly more energy intensive than their residential counterpart, mainly due to the fact that BEE policy has been poorly implemented and architectural design has not been optimised in commercial sector. An estimate suggests that improving energy efficiency in the commercial sector may contribute to one-fifth of total energy savings potentials by 2020 in line with the IEA׳s 450 ppm scenario. It is necessary for Chinese building authorities to incorporate the heterogeneity characteristics across different climate zones and building typologies into BEE policy portfolio to effectively curb energy consumption related carbon emissions. Electricity has become a vital source of energy for social and economic development in modern era. Likewise, the issues of its planning and management have grown complex. To address complexity in decision making, researchers have chosen system dynamics (SD) modelling and simulation technique. A state-of-art of such studies published during the period 2000–2013 is presented in this paper. The contribution of this review lies in categorizing the literature based on the important and contemporary researched areas. These research areas include models developed for policy assessment, generation capacity expansion, financial instruments, demand side management, mixing methods, and finally micro-worlds. Review shows that policy assessment and generation capacity expansion are the two most modelled topics. Financial instruments models evaluate different mechanism to support renewable technologies whereas mixing-methods channelize descriptive approach of SD into evaluating a single objective. Demand side management and micro-worlds are the least focused categories in SD.
