Municipal sludge from primary settling tanks of the Sewage treatment plant (STP) is a potentially important bio mass for the production of bio gas. Large amount of sludge is daily produced at wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) where anaerobic digesters are located. Coupling the waste water treatment plant with the micro-algal culture is currently considered one of the most promising avenues towards the production of renewable bioenergy, either in the form of biodiesel or biogas. Research on anaerobic digestion of microalgae and sewage sludge will be important for the future of WWTPs because it could be a key step for recycling nutrients for algal cultivation as well as for energy recovery. Any co-substrate can have a co-effect in the sense that they stimulate enzymatic synthesis that can also improve the anaerobic digestion yield. Studies have shown that co-digestion can increase the anaerobic digestibility of algae by improving the substrate composition. Early studies have shown that due to the difference in anaerobic inocula, waste composition, and the experimental environment the quantity and the quality of the methane production vary widely. Sewage Sludge improves the digestibility of microalgae and enhances the production of methane. Co-digestion of waste paper and algal sludge could efficiently balance the feed stock Carbon–Nitrogen(C/N) ratio between 20–25 likely to benefit the methane production rate. This paper reviews recent experimental findings of the co digestion of algae with sewage and several substrates and the methods to enhance the methane production and the factors affecting the augmentation of the bio gas. This paper explores the salient factors driving the changes in energy consumption in China's nonferrous metal industry during the 2000–2014 period. We employ the logarithmic mean Divisia index (LMDI) method to decompose the change in energy consumption into the energy structure effect (Δ E ES ), the energy intensity effect (Δ E EI ), the industrial structure effect (Δ E S ), the labour productivity effect (Δ E G ) and the industrial scale effect (Δ E L ). The main results revealed the following: (1) from 2000 to 2014, China's nonferrous metal industry's energy consumption increased by approximately 69.08 million tons of coal equivalent (tce); (2) Δ E G increased energy consumption in all years and was the largest contributor to the increase in energy consumption (followed by Δ E L ), whereas Δ E EI was the dominant factor in reducing energy consumption over the same period, accounting for 104.07% of the change in the absolute value of total energy consumption; and (3) Δ E ES and Δ E S contributed 0.24% and 1.45% to the change, respectively. At present, the decline in Δ E EI cannot completely offset the increases resulting from the other four effects. This paper then provides several policy recommendations based on these results. Demand-side management (DSM) has a crucial role in the attainment of sustainable energy that aims to optimize the energy utilization and mitigate emissions. Hence, DSM enhances the flexibility in the power system operation and facilitates low carbon transition in the electricity generation. Recently, the conventional terminology and strategies of DSM have been reformed to match with deregulation of energy environment. Furthermore, the increasing penetration of distributed energy resources (DERs) as well as the advent of smart grids have diversified the techniques and methods of DSM. This paper aggregates the expressions and methodologies about DSM subjects used by the literature and presents explicit definitions of the relevant concepts. In contrast with other review papers in DSM arena, this paper proposes a novel theoretical framework which aims to unify the terminology, concepts, and modalities associated with the literature. A comprehensive categorization of DSM strategies is presented, the scopes are clarified, and the relevant modalities are explicated to attain the unequivocalness in terminology. The evolution of DSM as well as state of the art concepts are considered in the organization of this paper. Traditional technologies of carbon capture and storage (CCS) are being focused on capturing CO 2 in large-scale demonstrations, which has been proved to result in the high cost and energy penalty. Meanwhile, typical innovative measures, commonly defined as the second generation CCS technologies, elude conventional ones by integrating with solar energy and thus contributing to a more energy-efficient conversion of CO 2 . However, few reviews pay attention to thermodynamic processes and parameters of these novel technologies, and there is a lack of systematic evaluation and comparison among them. This paper firstly presents a guided tour on the state-of-art of typical and innovative CCS technologies integrated with solar energy. An overview on thermodynamic processes, including chemical reactions, operating conditions and efficiency indexes of five typical technologies is presented so that the current development level can be clarified. Since the high energy requirement and related operating cost are the main barriers to the application of existing CCS technologies, the minimum work and second-law efficiency are applied as the main indicators in the second part of this paper which relates to performance evaluation. In addition, the performance windows for innovative technologies are illustrated for the comparison of technological maturity. The results show that energy requirement of innovative CCS technologies from the flue gas is avg. 100–200 kJ/mol CO 2 and the second-law efficiency of them is only 5–12%. Therefore, the maturity and popularity of these novel technologies are still relatively low. But the well-integrated systems and diversified output of these technologies can benefit existing energy infrastructures in a long period. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To fulfil the yearning of the majority population around the world and the need for environmental concerned energy conservation made renewable energy system (RES) as much obligatory among other energy systems. The asynchronous machines are particularly used in wind and hydro for creating more opportunities and challenges to have a control over them in order to create a stabilized RES. This paper extensively reviews on various types of asynchronous machines under different operating speeds and the existing control techniques deployed over them to aid a stabilized RES. In this context an analysis on the gradual development of machines and the role of power electronics over them to adopt with the up to date technology has been carried out. Additional benefits in terms of energy efficiency comparison between the synchronous and asynchronous machines in variable speed operation has also been premeditated. The iron and steel sector is energy-intensive, and it consumed 18% of the world's total industry final energy consumption in 2013. At present, according to the statistical data of International Energy Agency (IEA) published in 2012, the iron and steel industry has the technical potential to reduce its current total energy consumption by approximately 20% by applying the best available technology (BAT), and more than half of this technical potential may be obtained in China, where more energy-efficiency technologies/measures should be implemented in the steel plants. So a review of energy-efficiency technologies/measures in steel industry could be helpful for steel plants to improve their energy efficiency. Therefore, this paper presents a list of energy-efficiency technologies and practices applicable to the steel industry, which includes case studies around the world and information of energy savings and cost when available. Also, a brief overview of the steel industry around the world, details and energy use conditions of different steel manufacturing processes, types of energy use and specific energy consumption of steel industry and details of secondary energy are also included in this paper to give readers a clear understanding of the energy use situation of the steel industry. Thermal energy storage plays a crucial role in energy conservation and environmental protection. Research on thermal energy storage of phase change materials (PCM) has been standing in the forefront of science. Several evident defects exist in the phase change materials such as low thermal conductivity and leakage during the phase change process. Meanwhile, the clay mineral materials have relatively high thermal conductivity and excellent adsorbability, which can successfully remedy the defects resided in PCM. Thus, the researches on clay mineral-based form-stable phase change materials (FSPCM) were reviewed in this paper. Nine kinds of clay mineral materials were summarized, that is kaolin, diatomite, sepiolite, montmorillonite, perlite, SiO 2 , attapulgite, vermiculite and fly ash. The large specific surface area and prominent porous structure of clay mineral materials can successfully prevent the flow and leakage of PCM within the clay mineral-based FSPCM. The universe can be utilized as a sink for heat pumping by means of passive radiative cooling (PRC). This approach is an age-old cooling practice that has had a renaissance with increasing numbers of research papers over the past two decades. This paper reviews the trends of this technique, as well as advancements in recent years, with an attempt being made to analyze the cooling magnitude and developmental prospects for both diurnal and nocturnal periods. The models and calculations for computing the performances of passive radiative cooling systems are discussed along with the designs and fabrication factors that influence a system's performance. Optimizing strategies that maximize the net cooling power are also presented. The various system configurations that are available to date are summarized to demonstrate the building integration forms of PRC systems. The cooling potentials of different systems are assessed by simulations, and it is shown that the daytime cooling energy density is rather modest, even under the most favorable conditions. The barriers that likely exist to widespread application as well as the scopes for further improvements of PRC are also provided. It is noted that the commercialization of PRC systems is primarily limited by coating material constraints and technique reliability. Global warming has posed a great challenge to the survival of mankind. The increasing atmospheric concentration of carbon dioxide is widely recognized as the largest contributor of global warming. Hence, world-wide attention towards energy conservation has grown markedly to reduce the carbon dioxide emission. In the context of building energy performance, the ancient wisdom of using the earth as temperature moderator against harsh weather has impressive potential to become a solid solution against the energy inefficiency of Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning system (HVAC) in building. This creative and traditional passive cooling technique has been also made it possible to achieve most criteria of sustainable development concerning the world׳s growing housing demand, climate change, fossil-fuel depletion as well as limited land area and resources. In this paper, underground buildings were reviewed from preliminary aspects such as historical background, classification and subsequent thermal energy performance criteria. It has tried to elaborate the thermal performance variables, and conduct further study of benefits and drawbacks of this passive cooling technique toward different perspectives of sustainable development. With intention to gain wide acceptance in the modern society, this paper has proposed a conceptual design of earth sheltered home, which incorporated different types of the building techniques. Eventually earth sheltered buildings worldwide were summarized in a well illustrative form to highlight the different designs, applications, locations, timelines and climates. In addition, a deductive model is graphically represented for the virtual overview of underground structures that set the foundation to further investigate sustainability of this building envelope technique. Emissions trading scheme (ETS) is one of the effective measures to realize energy conservation and emission reduction. In order to set up a nationwide carbon emissions trading mechanism, seven ETS pilots have been launched in China. Firstly, based on empirical investigation and research of seven pilots, this paper analyzed the market efficiency of ETS pilots from four aspects: carbon price, trading volume, market liquidity, and information transparency. The result showed that the market efficiency of ETS pilots is not satisfactory in spite of the fact that system designs of ETS have achieved preliminary result. Then, the reason for low market efficiency of ETS pilots was discussed from some factors such as institutional arrangements, market participants, the supply and demand, etc. Finally, this paper puts forward some policy suggestions to improve the market efficiency of China׳s carbon trading market. A multi-carrier energy network is a system consists of several energy carriers such as electricity, natural gas, heat, etc . Generally, each transmission network is optimized separately but it could overshadow the actual optimal operation of the whole energy network. An integrated viewpoint opens a new window on optimization analysis. Among various networks, district heating networks are very promising for energy saving and carbon emission reduction. In this paper, effects of utilizing this network on optimization of a multi-carrier energy system are shown. However, such a problem has a considerable number of variables that makes a non-linear, non-convex, non-smooth, and high-dimension optimization problem and the optimal solution cannot be achieved by conventional mathematical techniques. Therefore, it is better to use evolutionary algorithms instead. In this paper, the well-known modified teaching-learning based optimization algorithm is used to solve the problem. Big data applications have become increasingly popular with the appearance of cloud computing and green computing. Therefore, internet service providers (ISPs) need to build data centers for data storage and data processing under the cloud service pattern. However, data centers often consume a significant amount of energy and lead to pollutant emissions. In recent years, the high energy consumption and environmental pollution of data centers have become a pressing issue. This paper reviews the progress of energy-saving technologies in high-performance computing, energy conservation technologies for computer rooms and renewable energy applications during the construction and operation of data centers. From multiple perspectives of energy consumption, cost reduction, and environment protection, a comprehensive set of strategies are proposed to maximize data centers’ efficiency and minimize the environmental impact. This paper highlights the specificities of the patterns of low carbon energy technological innovations in selected Asian emerging economies. China and the members of ASEAN-4 (Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines) are included in this analysis for their identical structure of developing economy. We outline a synthetic framework to cluster together the technologies with similar characteristics and analyse the changes of these characteristics over time. This is in order to elucidate the scope of sectoral composition and specialisation of the selected economies, and thereby understand the relative impact of science-based low carbon energy technologies on the niches of technological excellence. The findings show that China was keen to pursue its diversification strategy and develop its capability in low carbon energy technologies since the turn of the millennium. However, China has been gradually losing its momentum in more traditional areas like biomass, hydroelectric power, natural gas and fossil fuels. The ASEAN-4 economies, on the other hand, are showing interest in building a number of niches of technological excellence. This highlights a contrasting relative technological advantage between larger and smaller economies. Our findings also indicate that many of the low carbon technologies in selected economies have yet to attain strong scientific grounding for development. The findings of this paper are expected to provide some insights into low carbon energy technological development of emerging economies, and be useful for other developing economies to establish their strategic moves for energy technology development. Electric energy transport theories are still a debatable subject regarding their validity and applicability in various aspects. This paper includes a comparative study of the group of theories which are categorized as instantaneous theories as opposed to periodic-averaged ones. As a preliminary review this paper presents first the three apparent power definitions in order to emphasize the difference between them. A discussion regarding their accuracy for energy metering of various conditions such as multiphase and non-sinusoidal environments is presented. Instantaneous theories are then reviewed and compared with periodic averaged theories. The review focuses mainly on p-q theory ( PQT ) and its derivative, instantaneous multi-phase theory. The legacy application of this theory for active filtering is briefly presented and the new idea of using the theory for multi-load and multi-source theory is presented as well. China wishes to put more efforts in achieving its energy saving and emission reduction targets, for which photovoltaic (PV) power generation has showed great potential in many economic entities around the world. China also shows a strong sign of renewable energy booming: wind power and photovoltaic installed capacity soared in recent years. Actually, many countries around the world especially European countries have a longer history than China in PV application. But China has a unique energy industry development route, which may lead to a different PV prospective. To determine the uniqueness of China׳s PV development, data from China and 26 Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries are collected. The Characteristics of China׳s PV industry is quantified and extracted in this paper. Indicators are selected from aspects of energy source, energy generation and energy consumption. Indicator distribution analysis, correlation analysis, and country cluster analysis methods are applied. 3 major characteristics of China׳s PV industry are extracted. Based on the key findings of this paper, it can be concluded that some inertial elements in the energy industry may be the biggest obstacles for China׳s PV development, and off-grid and distributed PV solutions are suggested to be better ways than concentrated PV power generation. A sustainable energy system can be treated as a development of the distributed generation concept. It meets energy demands locally from renewable energy or/and high-efficiency polygeneration production technologies, and is characterized by energy and cost efficiency, reliability, and environmental-friendliness. Distributed energy systems typically use renewable energy resources to supply all energy demands, such as heat, cooling, and electric power in an integrated way. However, it seems that too much emphasis is placed on power and associated renewable energy-based power technologies for dealing with sustainability issues in public discussion and the research community. Often, equally important thermal energy (heat and cooling) and polygeneration are ignored. Polygeneration is an energy-efficient technology for generating simultaneously heat and power as well as other energy products in a single integrated process. Energy efficiency contributes significantly to CO 2 emission reduction. This paper discusses the role of polygeneration in a distributed energy system and the contributions of polygeneration to the development of sustainable energy systems. The paper also stresses that efficient decision support tools for sustainable polygeneration systems are important to achieve sustainability. First, the joint characteristic of a polygeneration plant that defines the dependency between different energy products is reviewed. Then, typical methods for dealing with polygeneration systems are reviewed. The review attempts to highlight the complexity of polygeneration systems and potential of polygeneration systems to adjust output of different energy products. Due to the rapid population growth and economic development, energy demand is likely to triple over the next decade in Vietnam. Development and implementation of Energy Efficiency and Conservation (EE&C) policies and programs is of great importance for the Government of Vietnam that would help to improve the energy efficiency and contribute in meeting the increasing energy demand of the country in the future. In the recent years, the Government of Vietnam has made substantial progress in improving EE&C by initiating a number of EE&C policies and programs with the two most important ones are the Law on EE&C and the National Targeted Program on Energy Efficiency and Conservation (Phase I: 2006–2010 and Phase II: 2012–2015). However, implementation of these policies and programs has been challenged in reality. This paper mainly aims to provide an overview on the current and future energy context in Vietnam; review the evolution of the Government׳s EE&C policies and programs; and identify the challenges and provide the recommendations for implementing EE&C policies and programs more effectively in the future. This paper suggests that much more efforts relating to improvement on collection, analysis, and management of energy data; capacity building; close coordination among the relevant Ministries and the organizations and agencies during the implementation of EE&C policies and programs; etc. should be put forward in the coming years. In addition, a number of recommendations for promoting EE in three largest energy consumers in Vietnam – namely industrial, residential, and transport sectors has been made in this paper. Daylight has been recognized as a free energy and cost effective alternative to artificial lighting for sustainable building design. It could also provide a more pleasant and attractive indoor environment for its good color rendering and it matches the human visual response much better than artificial light source. The effects of daylight on the occupancy comfort, health, well-being and productivity are well acknowledged. However, despite the above advantages, daylight is not widely integrated with the artificial lighting in building design as there is lack of information and evaluation tools on the suitability of daylight and its energy saving potential. The procedure of evaluating the indoor daylight performance consists of two parts: one is to assess the indoor daylight availability by either simulation or field measurements; another one is to accurately estimate potential energy saving when sufficient daylight is provided. This paper therefore presents a review of metrics and methods for indoor daylight availability assessment, as well as estimation methods used for predicting potential energy saving from daylight. The use of renewable energy is projected to increase substantially in the European Union to reach a share of 20% in final energy consumption and 10% renewable energy in transport by 2020. The renewable energy contribution is further expected to increase to 55%–75% of gross final energy consumption in 2050. According to the latest reports, the European Union has made significant progress since 2005 and is on track to reach its 2020 renewable energy targets. This paper provides a review of the policy framework for renewable energy in the European Union and an analysis of the progress made by the use of renewable energy as well as the expected developments until 2020 and beyond. It focusses on the contribution of bioenergy, the major source among renewables in the European Union. As biomass availability is a critical issue for the bioenergy production, this paper provides an analysis of the biomass demand for reaching the 2020 targets, in relation with the expected domestic supply and biomass potential. Energy security was the major driver for several countries in the world to opt for alternative sources of energy and reduce CO 2 emissions. Being blessed with oil and gas reserves, the situation in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries may look different, in a way that investments on Renewable Energy (RE) projects do not create adequate short-term financial returns. However, considering the extreme increase of energy demand locally caused by the industrial and economic development in the region will make seizing the emerging opportunity to develop RE projects a strategic decision. This paper targets regional decision-makers as well as multilateral stakeholders, in an attempt to formulate a set of recommendations on policies to promote RE deployment. It presents the results of the study that covered all GCC countries (Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman). The document summarizes GCC countries’ RE targets and highlights the main projects and measures established to start this transition. Furthermore, this paper provides an updated and comprehensive overview of the RE situation in the GCC countries, and it includes an assessment of the region’s RE potential, current installed RE capacity and project pipeline, institutional and market frameworks. This study analyses the main gaps concerning RE deployment in the region while discussing the financial, fiscal, political, legislative, technological and environmental aspects. Based on that, a set of recommendations is proposed to fill their gaps and help achieving their politically endorsed targets particularly in the electricity sector. The proposed recommendations will help to accelerate the development rate of GCC RE market, support governments’ efforts towards fulfilling future RE targets, and overcome potential barriers. However such policies analysis should be carried out individually for each country of the GCC region taking into consideration the specificity of each market and economic strategies with more adapted measures. Photovoltaics (PV) and air source heat pump (ASHP) are very important techniques for energy conservation and carbon reduction. It is essential to master the completed design idea and thermodynamic analysis method for the integration of PV and ASHP. Then, a design idea depending on the biggest power load of building appliances for the PV system was proposed in this paper. The thermodynamic analysis method for the PV integrated ASHP system considering the building process of PV modules was also provided here. To show the idea and method, the feasibility and exergy performance of an integrated PV-ASHP system (ASHP system driven by AC power inverted from PV) for domestic residential applications in Central-south China was investigated. Exergy efficiency and exergy consumption cost of the household PV-ASHP system were modelled based on the max PV conversion efficiency. The analyses show adequate efficacy of the PV-ASHP system with good thermodynamic and economic performance for their application in Central-south China. The PV-ASHP integrated system would have the best performance if the installed capacity of the individual PV system was decided by the required rating power of the ASHP system for HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning). It could also be supported by the thermodynamic analysis results. The design idea and analysis method in this paper not only illustrate the potential and the validity of the integrated system in Central-south China but also would enable sustainable development and applying of solar energy and other renewable energy. With more and more stringent regulations related to emissions, the increasing requirement of energy conservation, and the growing concern for global warming, battery electric vehicles are gaining increasing popularity in the market and that may eventually supplant their counterparts, the internal combustion engine and hybrid electric vehicles. Currently, one can classify battery electric vehicles based on their propulsion type, namely: single-motor drive and multi-motor drive. In this paper, a review of architectures and control strategies for the dual-motor coupling propulsion system used in battery electric vehicles is presented. The paper describes different architectures, reviews the means of mechanical coupling and transmission, electromechanical configurations, and summarizes approaches to the control of this emerging class of battery electric vehicles. A comparison of the advantages and disadvantages of dual-motor coupling propulsion system technology for battery electric vehicles is highlighted, and research challenges and prospects are also discussed. Hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) are one of the most viable technologies to achieve the goals of energy saving and environmental protection before a breakthrough in battery technology and fuel cell technology. Energy management strategy as a key technology of HEVs is studied extensively and deeply to improve the performance of HEVs and speed up the industrialization of HEVs. This paper quantitatively analyzes and evaluates current research status of energy management strategies for HEVs based on bibliometrics for the first time, through content analysis involving analysis of author keywords and abstracts. Then qualitative analysis is performed for all kinds of energy management strategies that are used in HEVs in detail, essential characteristics involving pros and cons, interconnections and improvement potential among various energy management strategies are revealed from the view of control theory. This paper presents a new speed-sensorless control strategy for a stand-alone doubly-fed induction generator supplying energy to an isolated load. The method is based on the root mean square (rms) detection scheme. The generated stator voltage is controlled via rotor currents. Amplitude of stator voltage and its frequency are controlled simultaneously. The output signals from the voltage controllers are the reference signals for the rotor current amplitude and frequency of the stator voltage is regulated with the help of frequency control loop. This developed direct voltage control method is applicable for both the balanced and unbalanced load and also for standalone and grid connected mode. The control pulses for the rotor side converter is supplied by the hysteresis controller which is operated on the error signal calculated between actual and reference rotor currents. This paper also provides the brief idea about the voltage and frequency control on modern Autonomous DFIG based Wind Energy Systems via single phase mathematical model of standalone DFIG system. A short state-of-the-art review on mechanical position/speed sensorless control schemes for autonomous DFIG based WESs is presented, which helps the present researcher and students working in this area. A large portion of energy consumption in the world is related to transportation. In recent decades, a variety of technologies have been innovated and applied in order to decrease vehicles energy consumption. In this paper, a comprehensive review on the use of driving data and traffic information for vehicles energy conservation is done. The main aim of this paper is the development of a framework for classification and comparative assessment of various methods and technologies, in which driving data or traffic information are utilized for vehicles energy conservation. The applications are classified into three main categories including (1) traffic monitoring and management systems, (2) intelligent energy management systems in vehicles and (3) intelligent management of charging issues. Research topics in each category are explained and their respective effectiveness in vehicles energy consumption reduction is discussed. Regional integrated energy systems (RIES) have garnered increased attention because they highly utilize renewable energy, comprehensive efficiency, and flexible operation. However, the current research on RIESs is mainly based on burning natural gas and supplemented by renewable energy, which will consumes much primary energy and generates corresponding carbon emissions. Therefore, a RIES contained various renewable energy sources and station energy sharing was constructed in this paper. Both the collaborative optimization model, which considered the operating parameters and system configuration, and the hierarchical optimization model, which optimizes the equipment configuration at the upper layer and the operational parameters at the underlayer, were constructed, respectively. Taking a multi-function low-carbon park as an example, the isolated integrated energy system (IIES) and RIES performances were explored. Finally, the operation cost, carbon emission, and interactive power in the separated production system, IIES and RIES were analyzed and discussed from a long-short time scale perspective. The results showed that the carbon emission, interactive power, and energy supply cost of the RIES's unit area are 7.62 kg/m2, 10.07 kWh/m2, and 40.55 CNY/m2, respectively. Long time scale perspective (Years or months), RIESs could significantly reduce carbon emissions and interactive power. Over the past few years, numerous countries have rapidly expanded the number and size of their high-tech clean fabrications, to keep pace with electronic devices and Internet needs. Moreover, extremely strict dry-bulb temperature, relative humidity, and particle concentration requirements cause high-tech cleanrooms to consume enormous energy, which is nearly three times the average energy consumed by data centers. Reducing energy use while ensuring the required built environment for normal production has become key challenges in high-tech clean manufacturing, and gradually attracted public and academic attention. However, different from extensive research and review studies conducted on data centers, no study has systematically reviewed state-of-the-art research on the energy aspects of high-tech cleanrooms. Therefore, this paper comprehensively reviews the research work on energy performance and energy conservation methods for high-tech cleanrooms. The main features and energy use status of high-tech cleanrooms are presented and analyzed. The energy models and evaluation metrics of high-tech cleanrooms, as well as the performance assessments and analysis of their environmental control systems (i.e., air-conditioning systems) are summarized and elaborated. Efforts on the performance improvement and energy conservation of high-tech cleanrooms, particularly air-conditioning systems, are also reviewed from multiple aspects, i.e., cold-heat offset reduction, air exchange rate, and airflow resistance optimization, and cooling plant efficiency improvement. The building sector is responsible for 40% of primary energy consumption, with heating/cooling covering the most significant portion. Thus, passive heating/cooling applications have gained significant ground during the last three decades, with many research activities on the subject. Among passive cooling/heating applications, ground cooling (especially earth-to-air heat exchangers) has been highlighted as a remarkably attractive technological research subjects because of its significant contribution to the reduction of heating/cooling energy loads; the improvement of indoor thermal comfort conditions; and the amelioration of the urban environment. This paper presents a holistic review of state-of-the-art research, methodologies, and technologies of earth-to-air heat exchangers that help achieve energy conservation and thermal comfort in the built environment. The review covers the critical subject of the thermal performance of earth-to-air heat exchanger systems; experimental studies and applications; parametric studies for investigating the impact of their main characteristics on thermal efficiency; and recent advances and trends including hybrid technologies and systems. The models describing the thermal performance of earth-to-air heat exchangers systems were classified in numerical, analytical, and data-driven; their main theoretical principles were presented; and experimental validation was mentioned when carried out. System parameters were grouped into three categories: system design, soil types, and soil surface coverage. System design parameters, especially length and burial depth, bore the most important influence on the thermal efficiency of the system. Abstract: According to IEA estimates, about 19% of the electricity used in the world is for lighting loads with a slightly smaller fraction used in the European Union (14%). Lighting was the first service offered by electric utilities and still continues to be one of the largest electrical end-uses. Most current lighting technologies can be vastly improved, and therefore lighting loads present a huge potential for electricity savings. Solid State Lighting (SSL) is amongst the most energy-efficient and environmentally friendly lighting technology. SSL has already reached a high efficiency level (over 276lm/W) at ever-decreasing costs. Additionally the lifetime of LED lamps is several times longer than discharge lamps. This paper presents an overview of the state of the art SSL technology trends. SSL technology is evolving fast, which can bring many advantages to the lighting marketplace. However, there are still some market barriers that are hindering the high cost-effective potential of energy-efficient lighting from being achieved. This paper presents several strategies and recommendations in order to overcome existing barriers and promote a faster penetration of SSL. The estimated savings potential through the application of SSL lighting systems in the European Union (EU) is around 209TWh, which translates into 77 million tonnes of CO2. The economic benefits translate into the equivalent annual electrical output of about 26 large power plants (1000MW electric). Abstract: The energy use in the world is increasing significantly owing to increase in per capita consumption of energy and growing population. Due to increased energy demand and the depletion of existing fossil fuel based sources, it is required to use the energy more efficient. Researches show that, hospitals represent approximately 6% of total energy consumption in the utility buildings sector. Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems are the major part of electrical energy consumption at the hospitals. In this paper, the research papers and practical studies on energy efficiency and energy saving potentials on HVAC systems at the hospitals are presented. Under the following sections, the latest literatures including research articles, conferences, e-books, handbooks and company reports interested in energy efficiency, energy saving and energy management HVAC systems are summarized. Variant Refrigerant Flow (VRF) technology enables greater energy efficiency and cost savings compared with traditional HVAC systems is also introduced. Abstract: Offshore wind farm (OWF) is an emerging technology in the wind energy conversion system. These wind resources are abundant, stronger, and are more consistent in terms of their availability than land-based wind resources. As a matter of fact significantly higher energy production is achieved due to larger wind turbine ratings and stronger wind profiles. This paper highlights the present scenario and challenges in development of offshore wind power. The challenges and opportunities that exist in the development stages of an offshore wind farm project, from exploration to erection and installation of wind turbines, construction of platforms and laying of sea cables, up to maintenance and de-commissioning, involving important technical aspects are addressed. An application of high voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission for integration of large scale offshore wind farm with onshore grid is attractive as compared to high voltage alternating current (HVAC) transmission system. Abstract: This paper presents the annual and seasonal cooling (CDD) and heating (HDD) degree day values over Saudi Arabia by utilizing the long-term daily average temperatures from 38 meteorological stations. The values of CDDs and HDDs have been calculated for a base temperature of 18.3°C. The maximum annual mean CDDs of 7549 were observed at Makkah while the minimum of 3132 at Abha. On the other hand the maximum HDDs of 985 were found in Guriat and minimum of 0 at Gizan, Jeddah, Rabigh, Makkah, Sabya, Sharourah, Wejh and Yanbu. The annual and seasonal values of CDD and HDD provided in this paper could be used to estimate the fuel or energy requirement for cooling or heating of buildings in respective areas both on annual and seasonal bases. Abstract: Traditional power load management in China is featured by power rationing without considering user demand. However, since the 1990s, demand side management (DSM) has been introduced by local governments and enterprises in China to improve terminal power efficiency and optimize resources allocation, and certain breakthrough have already been achieved. Demand response aims at improving the energy efficiency of end-users and achieving emission reduction targets. Based on the development status of power industry and electricity market in China, this paper firstly reviews the three key development stages of traditional DSM, including management content, operation mode and results assessment. Secondly, this paper analyzes the demand side management aimed at energy conservation and emissions reduction, selecting the core elements and key processes influencing terminal power efficiency of DSM development. In addition, DSM safeguard system and incentive mechanism, including political, economic, technical and managerial measures, are further discussed to achieve the aim of energy conservation and emission reduction. Abstract: Variable frequency drives (VFDs) can provide reliable dynamic systems and significant savings in energy usage and costs of the induction motors (IMs). Sensorless controlled IM drives have advantages in terms of efficiency enhancement and energy savings for critical applications such as electric vehicles, high performance machine tools, fans, compressors, etc. IM drives without having speed sensors or optical encoders mounted at the motor shaft are attractive because of their lower cost and higher reliability. When mechanical speed sensor is removed, the rotor speed information is estimated using the measured quantities of stator voltages and currents at the IM terminals. This paper highlights the sensorless techniques applied to the IM drives for sustainable reliability and energy savings. Overview on the IM mathematical model is briefly summarized to establish a physical basis for the sensorless schemes used. Further, the different types of IM-VFDs are presented in the paper. Abstract: In the European Union, the building sector is one of the largest energy consumer with about 40% of the final energy consumption. Reducing consumption is also a sociological, technological and scientific matter. New methods have to be devised in order to support building professionals in their effort to optimize designs and to enhance energy performances. Indeed, the research field related to building modelling and energy performances prediction is very productive, involving various scientific domains. Among them, one can distinguish physics-related fields, focusing on the resolution of equations simulating building thermal behaviour and mathematics-related ones, consisting in the implementation of prediction model thanks to machine learning techniques. This paper proposes a detailed review and discussion of these works. First, the approaches based on physical (“white box”) models are reviewed according three-category classification. Then, we present the main machine learning (“black box”) tools used for prediction of energy consumption, heating/cooling demand, indoor temperature. Eventually, a third approach called hybrid (“grey box”) method is introduced, which uses both physical and statistical techniques. Abstract: This paper illustrates a new approach to forecast the potential energy savings and environmental impact of adopting energy efficient practices in the Jordanian transportation sector. This approach is based on Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) and the double exponential smoothing techniques. The ANFIS model has been developed using socio-economic and transport related indicators based on annual number of vehicles, vehicle owner level, income level, and fuel prices in Jordan. The double exponential smoothing technique has been used to forecast the different transport indicators to feed the developed ANFIS model in order to forecast the transport energy demand for the next two decades. The model has been validated using testing data and has showed very accurate results of 97%. The results show that the transport energy demand is expected to increase at % 4.9yr−1 from years 2011–2030. As an example of the energy efficiency improvement in the transportation sector, this paper examines potential benefits that can be achieved through the introduction of diesel cars to the passenger cars market in Jordan. Five scenarios are suggested for implementation and investigated using the new approach on the basis of local and global trends over the period 2011–2030. It is demonstrated that introducing diesel passenger cars can slow down the growth of energy consumption in the transportation sector resulting in significant savings in the national fuel bill. Abstract: With attractive advantages of high efficiency, energy saving and environmental friendliness, the ground source heat pump (GSHP) system has been used widely in China in recent years. This paper summarizes the analytical solution, numerical solution and experimental investigation of the heat transfer of the ground heat exchanger (GHE), analyzes the simulation model and long-term operation performance of the GSHP system, and introduces the lastest hybrid ground source heat pump (HGSHP) system. In addition, this paper discusses and summarizes the shortages and imperfects of the current research on the simulation of the GSHP system and gives some recommendations for future work. Abstract: Globally, the cement industry accounts for approximately 5 percent of current anthropogenic carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. World cement demand and production are increasing significantly, leading to an increase in this industry’s absolute energy use and CO2 emissions. Development of new energy-efficiency and CO2 emission-reduction technologies and their deployment in the market will be key for the cement industry’s mid- and long-term climate change mitigation strategies. This paper is an initial effort to compile available information on process description, energy savings, environmental and other benefits, costs, commercialization status, and references for emerging technologies to reduce the cement industry’s energy use and CO2 emissions. Although studies from around the world identify a variety of sector-specific and cross-cutting energy-efficiency technologies for the cement industry that have already been commercialized, information is scarce and/or scattered regarding emerging or advanced energy-efficiency and low-carbon technologies that are not yet commercialized. Abstract: This paper presents a comprehensive review of two-phase ejector as an expansion device in vapor compression refrigeration cycle over the past two decades. It also covers research opportunities that are still open in the field of two-phase ejectors as an expansion valve. The studies of the application of ejector as an expansion device are relatively scarce compared to the application of ejector as heat-driven refrigeration system. A better understanding of two-phase flow in the ejector is necessary to optimize energy saving of the system. This paper also presents effects of geometric parameters of the ejector as an expansion valve on the performance of vapor compression refrigeration cycle. In addition, the effect of working fluid on the two-phase expansion refrigeration system is covered. The authors predict that the challenge of future research on design of two-phase ejector is how to generate a pressure rise in diffuser for minimum compressor work and optimum COP improvement. Abstract: The waste heat recovery by heat pipes is accepted as an excellent way of saving energy and preventing global warming. This paper is a literature review of the application of heat pipes heat exchangers for the heat recovery that is focused on the energy saving and the enhanced effectiveness of the conventional heat pipe (CHP), two-phase closed thermosyphon (TPCT) and oscillating heat pipe (OHP) heat exchangers. The relevant papers were allocated into three main categories, and the experimental studies were summarized. These research papers were analyzed to support future works. Finally, the parameters of effectiveness of the CHP, TPCT and OHP heat exchangers were described. Abstract: The textile industry is a complicated manufacturing industry because it is a fragmented and heterogeneous sector dominated by small and medium enterprises (SMEs). There are various energy-efficiency opportunities that exist in every textile plant. However, even cost-effective options often are not implemented in textile plants mostly because of limited information on how to implement energy-efficiency measures. Know-how on energy-efficiency technologies and practices should, therefore, be prepared and disseminated to textile plants. This paper provides information on the energy use and energy-efficiency technologies and measures applicable to the textile industry. The paper includes case studies from textile plants around the world and includes energy savings and cost information when available. A total of 184 energy efficiency measures applicable to the textile industry are introduced in this paper. Also, the paper gives a brief overview of the textile industry around the world. An analysis of the type and the share of energy used in different textile processes is also included in the paper. Subsequently, energy-efficiency improvement opportunities available within some of the major textile sub-sectors are given with a brief explanation of each measure. Abstract: This paper presents the typical evaporative cooling air conditioning systems used in China, including all-air central evaporative cooling systems, air–water semi-central evaporative cooling systems and hybrid desiccant dehumidification and evaporative cooling systems. Their environmental impacts and energy saving potential are illustrated, and other factors closely related to the practical application of evaporative cooling, such as water treatment, appropriate design codes and handbooks, and automatic control strategies, are outlined. Abstract: This paper reflects the achievements and the challenges ahead in the field of organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs). The primary intention of this paper is to study different organic materials synthesized so far and the OLEDs fabricated for solid-state lighting. After deep review of literature we have synthesized and characterized rare earth based europium organic complexes Eu(TTA)3Phen, Eu(x)Y(1−x)(TTA)3Phen, and Eu(x)Tb(1−x)(TTA)3Phen, where x =0.4 and 0.5 by solution technique maintaining stoichiometric ratio. Blended films of pure and doped Eu complexes that are molecularly doped into polymer resins namely polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) and polystyrene (PS) are prepared according to weight percentage. Concentration effect on absorption and emission spectra of the blended films was studied for different weight percentages (10, 25, 50, 60%). All the complexes doped in PMMA showed an excellent transparency of 90–97% while the complexes doped in polystyrene showed a transparency of 85–90%, bit less than in PMMA. Energy gap of the synthesized complexes have been determined in PMMA and PS. Considering the facts that these complexes have good solubility in most of the organic solvents, the absorption spectra of Eu(TTA)3Phen, Eu0.5Y0.5(TTA)3Phen and Eu0.5Tb0.5(TTA)3Phen complexes are studied, and OLED devices having the structure ITO/m-MTDATA/α-NPD/TPBi:Eu(x)Y(1−x)(TTA)3Phen/Alq3/LiF:Al (where x =0.4, 0.5) were fabricated and characterized. Significant red emission was observed from fabricated OLED devices at 612nm when operated in a range of 10–18V. Thus the synthesized rare earth based organic complexes are the best suitable candidates for fabrication of red OLED devices. Abstract: Energy is directly related to the most critical social issues which affect sustainable development. Today there is a great incentive for countries to exploit renewable energies in order to slow down the changes in environment and to guard against future trends. This paper presents a review of the assessed potential of renewable resources and practical limitations to their considerable use in the perspective of present scenarios and future projections of the national energy for Oman. Solar and wind are likely to play an important role in the future energy in Oman provided that clear policies are established by the higher authority for using renewable energy resources. Comparison of different solar energy technologies revealed that Concentrator Photovoltaic (CPV) technology may constitute a more appropriate choice for large solar power plants implementation in Oman. Moreover, Oman will not be alone in the region in this regard as similar moves are carried out in other Middle Eastern countries. Abstract: The paper investigates the causality relationships among energy consumption, carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and income in India using a dynamic modeling approach. The paper also utilises an innovation accounting method to investigate profiles of the macroeconomic variables persisting from an unanticipated shock in innovation. Our results provide evidence of the existence of bi-directional Granger causality between energy consumption and CO2 emissions in the long-run but neither CO2 emissions nor energy consumption causes movements in real income. There is no causality relationship between energy consumption and income in any direction in the long-run implying that India could follow energy conservation and efficiency improvement policies without impeding economic growth. Abstract: Low carbon electricity is essential for China''s low carbon development. In the paper low carbon electricity is defined as an economy body manages to realize its potential economic growth fueled by less electricity consumption, which can be characterized by indexes of GDP electricity intensity and CO2 emissions per unit electricity generation. IRSP is proposed by Hu to implement power planning on state level in deregulated power sector and is used in the paper to study China''s power planning into 2030. A business-as-usual scenario is projected as baseline for comparison while low carbon electricity development based on IRSP is studied. Results show that, with IRSP, China could save energy by 1.5 billion toes and reduce CO2 emission by 5.7 billion tons, during 2010–2030. Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to review some key issues and prospects related to solar photovoltaic (PV) power engineering in the Republic of Serbia. The solar PV energy sector in the Republic of Serbia is poorly developed, despite the very good geographical position of Serbia and recent introduction of feed-in-tariffs (FITs) by the Serbian Government. This paper is aimed at analysing and assessing the potential, status and perspectives of solar PV power engineering in the Republic of Serbia. Solar radiation maps for the territory of Serbia using PVGIS © software are presented and discussed. Some practical data and considerations are given from the point of view of a customer or company keen to invest in the solar PV electricity production in Serbia. The importance of the research and educational support in the field of solar PV power engineering is emphasised. The aim of this paper is to encourage further analyses and eventually investment in the PV energy sector in Serbia. It is expected that the Serbian authorities will refine and improve their regulatory policy in the field of renewable energy sources (RES) particularly within solar PV power engineering sector. The results of this study show that the Republic of Serbia has great potential for utilizing stand-alone and grid-connected solar PV energy systems and can seriously rely on this important RES sector in the future. Abstract: The cement sub-sector consumes approximately 12–15% of total industrial energy use. Therefore, a state of art review on the energy use and savings is necessary to identify energy wastage so that necessary measures could be implemented to reduce energy consumption in this sub-sector. In this paper energy use at different sections of cement industries, specific energy consumption, types of energy use, details of cement manufacturing processes, various energy savings measures were reviewed and presented. Various energy savings measures were critically analyzed considering amount of energy that can be saved along with the implementation cost. Amount of CO2 reduction has been presented along with the payback period for different energy savings measures as well. This study complied a comprehensive literature on the cement industries in terms of Thesis (MS and PhD), peer reviewed journals papers, conference proceedings, books, reports, websites. It has been observed that China producing major share of global cement production. Coal contribute major share of fuel used in cement industries. However, along with conventional fuels, industries are moving towards the use of alternative fuels to reduce environmental pollution. It was reported that cement industries are moving from wet process to dry process as it consume less energy compared to wet process. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
