The laboratory for renewable energy sources of the Higher Education Technical School of Professional Studies in Novi Sad (Serbia) contains the equipment regarding solar and thermal techniques, based on the implementation of solar panels, heat pumps and a pellet stove. Photovoltaic systems include the implementation of static photovoltaic panels, trackers and inverters for power supply of autonomous consumers. In addition, the laboratory is equipped with modern systems of internal and external lighting, a wind generator with accompanying inverter, elements of smart installations and fuel cell systems for laboratory measurements. This paper presents experiences in the implementation of the photovoltaic systems in the educational process through laboratory exercises. The specification of the laboratory equipment, the methodology of work, as well as the electrical schemes of experiments of open circuits and short circuit, recording of electricity-voltage characteristics, tracking the maximum power point, serial and parallel connection and shading of photovoltaic cell are presented. The second group of the trial is performed on the "off grid" photovoltaic system set in the schoolyard and connected to the appropriate inverter with the autonomous group of consumers. Facing severe environmental problems, to improve the efficiency of the hydraulic construction machinery is in great demand. The potential energy when the boom is lowering is dissipated as heat in hydraulic system. It is urgent to improve the maximum use of regeneration energy to reduce the fuel consumption. This paper first analyzes the proportion of regeneration energy for each actuator and studies the special working style of the boom energy regeneration system (ERS) in a 20-t HE. Then, types of the ERS are discussed. The research and development of the electric ERS technology and the hydraulic ERS technology based on construction machinery are reviewed. In recent years, alternative fuel studies have been conducted thoroughly by researchers through their experimental work. Depletion of fossil fuel raised the attention of researchers to investigate renewable energy sources such as biodiesel and alcohol. There is a lack of literature review study on the viability of alcohol acting as additive in biodiesel-diesel fuel blends. Thus, this review paper studies on the effects of various alcohol additives in biodiesel-diesel fuel blends on combustion behaviour, performance and emission characteristics of diesel engines. The physicochemical properties of alcohol and biodiesel are rigorously discussed, in which they are the main factors in determining the quality of the blended fuel. The aim of this paper is to identify the potential of alcohol fuel as an additive in the blended biodiesel and diesel fuel in correspond to the type of alcohol, blending ratio and engine operation conditions. Wide range of results from previous research studies with different types of compression-ignition engine, different engine operation conditions and varieties of alcohol-biodiesel-diesel fuel blending ratios were collected in this literature review study. Combustion behaviour such as coefficient of variations (COV), in-cylinder pressure, ignition delay, heat release rate and combustion duration are presented. Low cetane number and high latent heat of vaporization of alcohol cause a longer ignition delay, produce higher rate of heat release and lower in-cylinder pressure when compared with that of diesel fuel. Low density and viscosity of alcohol improve the spray characteristics and enhance air-fuel mixing process. In terms of engine performance analysis, the presence of oxygen in alcohol fuel promotes a more complete combustion; hence, resulting in an increase of thermal efficiency. The energy demand across the globe has increased in many folds due to technological advancement, rapid growth in industries and increase in household energy demand. This led the engineers and planners to think and find the means to harvest the alternative energy sources other than the fossil fuel. Solar, wind, biomass, mini hydro are some of the resources used worldwide to generate energy as per the availability of resources. This paper presents a comparative performances of various stand alone solar photovoltaic(PV), grid connected PV and hybrid renewable energy system (HRES) studied across the globe. The standalone PV system is used to supply electricity to a small habitats/hamlets or to a single household. Hybrid energy system consists of two or more energy sources for generation of power for rural electrification in off grid locations and in grid connected PV systems, excess electricity produced is injected to the grid thereby generating additional income. The research works carried out by various researchers around the globe on renewable energy sources particularly for rural electrification is discussed in this paper. Over the past decade, energy storage in renewable energy-dominated systems has received increasing interest. Effective energy storage has the potential to enhance the global hosting capacity of renewable energy in power systems, accelerate the global energy transition, and reduce our reliance on fossil fuel-based generation. Pumped hydro storage (PHS) is the most common storage technology due to its high maturity, reliability, and effective contribution to the integration of renewables into power systems. Accordingly, it is essential to achieve the optimal operation of energy systems combined with PHS. Therefore, this paper comprehensively reviews recent efforts toward the optimal operation of PHS-based energy systems (PHS-BES), considering the diversified energy sources, configurations, grid connectivity, and research directions. The evaluation criteria for the optimal operation of these systems are mathematically addressed and discussed. Moreover, methods of solving the studied problem are categorized and several improvements are suggested. It is observed that more flexible energy policies are urgently needed to encourage new investments in PHS, and the existing environmental and social criteria require further research. Moreover, the hybridization of PHS with other storage devices should be further investigated, and the development of robust hybrid methods for solving the optimal operation of PHS-BES, especially for real-time applications, is highly promising. Due to the interactions between the generators/power electronic devices and the grids, wideband oscillation events have occurred frequently in renewable power systems with frequencies from several Hz to several kHz. Wideband oscillation monitoring techniques have been emerging in recent years to identify and analyze these events. Unlike existing review papers that concentrate on fundamental synchrophasor technology, this paper reviews the wideband monitoring technology. Specifically, the synchronized wideband phasor measurement techniques and the synchronized waveform measurement techniques are first reviewed. Next, the measurements' applications on wideband oscillation identification, early warning, and mitigation, and other applications in power system operation are carefully introduced. Also, the challenges in wideband phasor estimation and waveform data compression are discussed, and possible solutions are highlighted. Finally, future research opportunities on new applications in wideband oscillation and power quality are highlighted. Traditional technologies of carbon capture and storage (CCS) are being focused on capturing CO 2 in large-scale demonstrations, which has been proved to result in the high cost and energy penalty. Meanwhile, typical innovative measures, commonly defined as the second generation CCS technologies, elude conventional ones by integrating with solar energy and thus contributing to a more energy-efficient conversion of CO 2 . However, few reviews pay attention to thermodynamic processes and parameters of these novel technologies, and there is a lack of systematic evaluation and comparison among them. This paper firstly presents a guided tour on the state-of-art of typical and innovative CCS technologies integrated with solar energy. An overview on thermodynamic processes, including chemical reactions, operating conditions and efficiency indexes of five typical technologies is presented so that the current development level can be clarified. Since the high energy requirement and related operating cost are the main barriers to the application of existing CCS technologies, the minimum work and second-law efficiency are applied as the main indicators in the second part of this paper which relates to performance evaluation. In addition, the performance windows for innovative technologies are illustrated for the comparison of technological maturity. The results show that energy requirement of innovative CCS technologies from the flue gas is avg. 100–200 kJ/mol CO 2 and the second-law efficiency of them is only 5–12%. Therefore, the maturity and popularity of these novel technologies are still relatively low. But the well-integrated systems and diversified output of these technologies can benefit existing energy infrastructures in a long period. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Global anthropogenic activities resulting in the emission of harmful greenhouse gases (GHGs) to the atmosphere have increased the challenges faced from climate change. The greater awareness of the need to mitigate climate variability has brought about intense focus on the adverse impacts of fossil-fuel based energy on the environment. Being the single largest source of carbon emissions, energy supply has attracted much attention and more so that, climate change impacts extend beyond national boundaries. Since energy use is sine qua non to economic development, scientists have reiterated the necessity of developing and utilising renewable energy. Although, past and present CO 2 emissions have and are majorly caused by industrialized countries, it is envisaged that future GHGs emissions would be mostly from developing countries as they industrialize. Renewable energy sources that include biomass, hydroelectric, wind, solar and hydrothermal systems, are carbon-neutral, releasing relatively no emissions. This paper discusses the initiatives associated with the provision of renewable energy to the energy mix in Nigeria as an indication of the country’s commitment to adopt a sustainable development strategy in shaping the economy. It reviews the literature and employs a discourse analysis to examine the limited use of renewable energy sources in Nigeria and the factors prevailing against their development. Society's dependence on fossil fuels to meet energy demands has resulted in an enormous release of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions into the atmosphere, thereby perpetuating global climate change. The consequences of climate change have prompted progressive governments such as British Columbia to establish legislative GHG emission reductions targets, which have lead to energy conscience municipalities within the province voluntarily committing to helping achieve such targets. Best practices examined from European municipalities share a common theme of renewable energy adoption and municipally-owned utilities. An emerging renewable energy technology are tidal current turbines (TCTs), which function to extract kinetic energy from the lateral movement of the tides in areas with considerable tidal velocities. This paper examines the history, physics, operational parameters, and plausible environmental impacts of TCTs in order to make a case for their sustainable implementation. The feasibility of the municipalities of North Pender Island, South Pender Island, and Saturna of the Southern Gulf Islands Region (SGIR), British Columbia, to help meet established GHG emissions reduction targets through the implementation of TCTs is analyzed, demonstrating that the deployment of 10 TCTs can produce 38,266,602 kWh/yr of electricity, mitigating 1138 t of CO2e, achieving 9.9% of the cumulative municipal GHG emissions mitigation targets. The paper then examines a case study in the Shetland Islands and Pentland Firth and Orkney Waters, Scotland, suggesting that jurisdictional regulatory powers over TCT installation and operation be devolved from the British Columbia government to the municipal governments of North Pender Island, South Pender Island, and Saturna, so that such communities can reap the benefits associated with a municipally-owned utility. Energy demand in China has risen rapidly and reached an unprecedented level due to the high-speed economic growth and modern development. As a result, the Chinese government faces a growing pressure to address the energy shortage and environmental deterioration, mainly resulting from an over-dependence on fossil energy. China has become both the largest energy consumer and CO 2 emitting country in the world in 2015. Utilization of potential for renewable energy is necessary for changing inappropriate energy consumption structure, protecting environment and achieving sustainable economic and social development. In view of such mentioned situation, this paper firstly introduces the energy structure as well as the development status of renewable energy in China, which includes hydropower, wind power, solar power, biomass power and other renewable energy. Besides, based on the current situation in China, the paper makes a preliminary prediction of the development of renewable energy in the country for the future decades, and proposes targeted countermeasures and suggestions. Geo-resources play an increasing significant role in achieving a sustainable energy future. However, their exploitation is not free of environmental impacts. This paper aims to identify the lessons and knowledge gaps on understanding of the sources, mechanisms and scope of environmental consequences of underground geo-energy resources exploitation. The paper examines four underground exploitation activities: CO 2 geological storage, exploitation of shale gas, geothermal power and compressed air energy storage (CAES). Selected studies carrying out life cycle assessment (LCA) and environmental risk assessment (ERA) are structurally reviewed by applying a six steps method. Our finding indicates that global warming potential is the major focus of examined LCA studies with relatively less attention on other impacts. Environmental impacts at the local level are less evaluated except water use for shale gas and geothermal power. Environmental impacts of exploitation with storage purposes are relatively low. For energy supply associated exploitation, the impacts largely depend on the types of underground activities and the exploited energy carriers. In the ERA studies, likelihood of a hazard occurrence is the focus of the probability assessment. There is limited information on the pathways and transport of hazard agents in the subsurface and on the relation between hazard exposure and the impacts. The leakage of the storing agents is the well-identified hazard for storage associated exploitation, while the migration of fluids and exploited energy carriers are the ones for exploitation with energy supply purposes. In general, understanding of environmental risks of soil contamination are limited. Very few number of ERA studies are available for assessing a CAES. Costly and eco-destructive diesel based systems are usually used for electrifying rural areas in Malaysia. Fuel transportation is another obstacle in this regard. Moreover, unpredictable fluctuation of fuel price makes the system cost unstable. The diesel based systems can be replaced with renewable energy (RE) based systems. Thus, a feasibility analysis is necessary to assess the potentiality of RE resources. This paper analyzes the potentiality of renewable energy in Sarawak, East Malaysia. The wind speed is insufficient, but solar energy is abundant at the location. Hence, the feasibility of photovoltaic (PV), Battery and Fuel Cell (FC) based systems are investigated for the load of a village longhouse comprising 50 families located in Kapit, Sarawak. Both systems, including FC (PV/Battery/FC) and excluding FC (PV/Battery) are analyzed and compared with conventional diesel based system. The analysis focuses on net present cost (NPC) and cost of energy (COE). Other cost parameters such as installation cost, operation and maintenance cost (O&M), operating cost are also analyzed. HOMER software provided by National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NERL) is used as an analyzing tool. This paper also focuses on the operational strategy and sensitivity analysis of the hybrid system for optimal performance. The HOMER optimization results and sensitivity analysis show that the PV/Battery system is economical and environmentally friendly with total net present cost of $ 335,297 and cost of energy of 0.323 $/kWh with no emission. Thus it can be a suitable replacement of diesel based system. The FC based system has higher costs; thus despite of its benefits, it is not suggested as the best system for the situation. Renewable energy sources have become a very important issue due to environmental and sustainability concerns. In addition, most renewable energy electricity generation (RES-E) projects are characterized by considerable uncertainty and sequential decision-making. These projects’ net present value (NPV) is very often close to zero, which renders them a good candidate for the application of real options valuation methodology of investment project appraisal. This paper examines the real options valuation of a potential onshore wind farm project in Serbia. The binomial tree model spans a 15 year period consisting of a 2 year investment period and a 13 year operating period, the first 12 years of which are protected by Feed-in-Tariffs according to local renewable energy regulations. The authors examine a multi-phased compound (nested) path-dependent real option consisting of mutually exclusive options - a sequential option to invest as well as expand, repower, contract and abandon options. Volatility, which is calculated by means of a Monte Carlo simulation according to the logarithmic-present-value-returns approach, shows predominant sensitivity to the capacity factor simulated with the rescaled Weibull's probability distribution. The final binomial tree results show that the proposed sequence of options increases project value by transforming higher risk and lower return in the initial discounted cash flow model, to lower risk and higher return in the RO model. This paper contributes to the existing literature in at least two ways: it presents in-depth analysis of the real option application to the RES-E project and provides decision-makers with sophisticated tool for improving strategic thinking, capital budgeting and decision-making processes. Europe has a large tradition of Small Hydropower stations (SHP); these proliferate wherever there was an adequate supply of moving water and a need for electricity. As electricity demand grew many of these plants were abandoned. Today with the rising price of energy, SHP can be a solution to help rural electrification, furthermore SHPs do not consume the water that drives the turbines. The advantage of this technology is extremely robust and systems can last for 50 years or more with little maintenance. This paper summarizes an overview of SHP Hydropower in Europe. Hydropower on a small scale, or micro-hydro, is one of the most cost effective energy technologies to be considered for rural electrification in less developed countries. Europe is a market leader of SHP technology. Optimal turbine designs are available and new technical developments offer automated operation of SHP. The present role of SHP in Europe in the development of renewable energy sources is discussed through this paper. The main producers of SHP electricity in Europe are Italy, France, Spain, Germany and Sweden. On the other hand, 10 European countries are ranked based on the total numbers of SHPs: Germany (7,512), Italy (2,427), France (1,935), Sweden (1,901), Spain (1,047), Poland (722), Romania (274), Portugal (155) and UK (120). The research shows that there is a considerable scope for development and optimization of this technology. Electric Vehicles (EV) are emerging due to ever increasing concerns on the energy issues and greenhouse gas effects. Also, due to the depletion of fossil fuels, electricity generated from Renewable Energy Sources (RES) like Photovoltaic (PV) arrays and Wind Turbine Generators (WTG) are used for charging the EV batteries which reduces the utility grid overload. A review on different power converter topologies which can be used in PV-EV and WTG-EV battery chargers are presented in this paper. Also, this paper reviews the various power converters which can be employed for interfacing RES-EV battery charger with the utility grid. Concentrator photovoltaics (CPV) is considered to be one of the most promising renewable energy components that could lead to a reduction on the dependence on fossil fuels. The aim of CPV technology is to lower the cost of the system by reducing the semiconductor material, and replacing it by cheap optical devices that concentrate the light received from the sun on a small-size solar cell. The electrical characterization of devices based on this technology however, is inherently different and more complex than that of the traditional PV devices. Due to the advantages offered by the Artificial Neuron Networks (ANNs) to solve complex and non-linear problems, and the great level of complexity of electrical modelling of CPV devices, in recent years, several authors have applied a variety of ANNs to solve issues related to CPV technology. In this paper, a review of the ANNs developed to address various topics related with both, low and high concentrator photovoltaics, is presented. Moreover, a review of the ANN-based models to predict the main environmental parameters that affect the performance of CPV systems operating outdoors is also provided. In a general microgrid (MG), a step-up distribution transformer is used to facilitate integration of the low-voltage (LV) AC microgrid into a medium-voltage distribution system. On the other hand, isolation transformers are placed between distributed energy resources (DERs) (e.g. non-renewable/renewable energy resources and energy storage devices) and common AC buses/lines to eliminate DC-current components and to configure 3-phase & 4-wire, 3-phase & 3-wire, 1-phase & 2-wire, or 1-phase & 3-wire AC microgrids. When all neutral points of isolation transformers are grounded through a unique grounding system of the step-up distribution transformer, a uni-grounded AC microgrid structure is configured. This paper not only mentions advantages and shortcomings of the uni-grounded LVAC microgrid operation, but also investigates its transient operation characteristics. Transient simulation results of the uni-grounded LVAC MG are surveyed through various fault situations and operation transition tests between the grid-connected mode and the islanded mode of the microgrid. Available fault protection methods of a uni-grounded LVAC microgrid are considered. Transient simulation results from PSCAD software are used to validate the fault protection solutions developed for the uni-grounded LVAC microgrid. The aim of this paper is to present the main challenges for the development of the natural gas industry in the Brazilian state of Espírito Santo; in so doing, the paper identifies the strategies that are currently employed by industry players to encourage the use of this resource and to thus diversify the state's energy matrix. For these purposes, the following methodology was adopted: (i) analyzing bibliographic references that address the issues of infrastructure industry, regulation and the natural gas industry in Brazil – including in the Brazilian states; and (ii) employing secondary data from governmental and regulatory institutions to demonstrate the evolution of this industry in recent years in Brazil and particularly in Espírito Santo. The study concludes that, although there are challenges in expanding the gas transportation (carrier) and distribution segments ("natural monopolies") and the formation of a "consumption-anchor" for natural gas, the present is the right time to use public policies to encourage the use of natural gas and renewable sources for technological, environmental and energy security reasons. Fiji is an island country with just over 300 small islands and approximately 853,000 people. It is a small island developing state (SIDS) that is heavily dependent on imported fossil fuel for its energy needs. The paper attempts to determine the past and current energy situation in Fiji, challenges faced and strategizes to overcome these challenges. In 2014, Fiji generated 859 GW h of grid electricity from 259.8 MW of power plants. Here, 45.4% of grid electricity was produced by hydro, 50.9% by diesel generators and the remaining by biomass. However, Fiji's transport sector is completely dependent on fossil fuels with fuel import bill equivalent to an average 58% of export earnings and taking up 21% of total import bill. The smallness of Fiji and dispersed islands within Fiji group leads to many challenges to have accessible, affordable and sustainable energy supply. These challenges are comprehensively discussed in this paper. Strategies such as increasing private-public partnership in renewable energy projects, changing customer behavior, setting up a credible feed-in tariff structure, developing locally owned business in renewable energy and energy efficiency, setting up of risk mitigation facilities and strengthening institutions supporting energy sector are discussed to overcome or minimize challenges. This paper reviews the history of renewable energy development in the BRICS countries. The financing models for renewable energy development of BRICS countries include bank financing, institutional loans, industry funds, and international financing. This paper identified several problems with financing in BRICS countries, including a lack of financing channels, investment shortage for small and medium-sized enterprises and imperfect government policies. The solutions to these problems include expanded capital markets, the financing of leasing services, and build-operate-transfer and build-own-operate projects; further, a financial citizen participation model should be employed similar to that as Germany and European Union emissions trading system (EU ETS). A financial citizen participation model means that legal entities, private individuals, and agricultural enterprises invest in renewable energy infrastructure through equity. However, there are still many barriers in the related theory, techniques and industrialization, which lead to the high cost of the algae biofuel. This paper reviewed the process of the microalgae biofuel's commercial process. Investigated the barriers of the technologies especially the energy-extensive part and the pilot scale test which is the crucial part of the process. The policy supports of American, EU and China for microalgae biofuel industry and the effect of them was summarized at this paper. Numbers of pilot scale program has launched in the support of the government and the private investment, while there is still some distance from scale up production. To fulfil the yearning of the majority population around the world and the need for environmental concerned energy conservation made renewable energy system (RES) as much obligatory among other energy systems. The asynchronous machines are particularly used in wind and hydro for creating more opportunities and challenges to have a control over them in order to create a stabilized RES. This paper extensively reviews on various types of asynchronous machines under different operating speeds and the existing control techniques deployed over them to aid a stabilized RES. In order to keep sustainable development, the Chinese government has issued series of policies to reduce CO 2 emissions. Renewable energy technologies applied in building field, mainly including solar energy and geothermal energy technologies, are recommended because of advances of energy efficiency, environmental protection and economic sustainability. Carbon trading has been widely accepted as an effective market approach, but it hasn’t covered the renewable energy application in building projects in China as yet. Reasonable solutions should be proposed to encourage building projects to participate in the carbon trading market. This paper aims at establishing a feasible mechanism to help improve the carbon market for renewable energy application in buildings. To attend this goal, this paper introduces and analyzes the status of carbon trading market and the position for building projects in China. By comparing the present mechanisms, Programmatic CDM with building portfolio is considered appropriate for building projects with renewable energy application. Volume verifying method, the core of the mechanism, is modified to fit the building projects. Then five different specific cases are studied to prove the practicality and reasonableness of the methodology. Fossil fuels such as coal, petroleum, and natural gas have been used as the major sources of energy in the recent past. However, the negative environmental impacts associated with the emission of the greenhouse gases from these conventional energy sources forced to realize the importance of renewable energy resources. At the same time, the average annual exponential rate of population growth in India needs increasing amounts of fresh-water for the basic necessities. This might result in water scarcity as the overall population in India is expected to increase to 1.60 billion by 2050. It has been forecasted that, by the year 2040, India will rank 40th in the world in terms of water scarcity. To meet the rising fresh-water demand, desalination is an intelligent and sustainable option for India, which has a very long coastline measuring 7517 km. In this paper, an attempt has been made to provide a comprehensive review of water scarcity in India and suggest a possible solution, which is implementing desalination technologies coupled with renewable resources. The paper reviews the ground water scenario in India and the global desalination market. We summarize the energy consumption in various desalination processes and provide a brief outlook of the desalination techniques in India. Apart from this, desalination using non-conventional sources such as solar, wind, and geothermal energy is discussed. In addition, factors affecting the environment due to desalination and the potential counter measures are presented. This review aims to provide an awareness of the projected water crisis in India, in the coming decades, and is also aimed to help the policy makers for selecting an appropriate desalination technology. China currently faces the dual constraints of developing low-carbon economy and enabling sustainable energy utilization. It is an inevitable choice for the strategic transformation of economy development and energy development in China to develop renewable energy. Since renewable energy is a capital-and tech-intensive industry, which requires a large amount of investment and a high level of technology innovation. Investors face many different uncertainties when making a renewable energy project investment decision. Therefore, it has great significance for the development of renewable energy to evaluate the risks in renewable energy investment projects, and then make the best investment decisions. Based on above background, the topic of renewable energy investment risk is studied in this paper using system dynamics method. In the first part of the work, three main risks in renewable energy investment, technical risk, policy risk and market risk, have been discussed, and then causal loop diagram of investment risk and risk assessment model have been established by the system dynamics method, after that a numerical example was given in the last part of the paper. The result of the numerical example indicated that policy risk was the main factor affecting the investment in the early development stage, while policy risk and technology risk decline gradually, market risk has gradually become the main uncertainty affecting the investment in the mature development stage. The deployment of Hybrid Offshore Wind and Wave Energy Systems (HOWiWaES) towards the simultaneous exploitation of the corresponding offshore renewable energy sources, may efficiently address the common challenge of the offshore wind and the wave energy sector to reduce their costs, with multiple additional benefits. A prerequisite at an early stage of the realization of a HOWiWaES project is the determination of marine areas suitable for the deployment of HOWiWaES. In the present paper, a methodological framework for identifying the most appropriate marine areas in Greece towards the deployment/siting of HOWiWaES is developed and presented. The framework is based on the combined use of multi-criteria decision making methods and Geographical Information Systems (GIS). At the first stage of the analysis, the unsuitable for the deployment of HOWiWaES marine areas are identified through the development of a GIS database that produces thematic maps representing exclusion criteria related to utilization restrictions as well as to economic, technical and social constraints. Then, at the second stage of the analysis, eligible marine areas not satisfying exclusion criteria are evaluated and ranked using the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP), based on evaluation criteria related to economic, technical and socio-political factors. The AHP's implementation is supported by the developed GIS database, eliminating significantly the subjectivity in judgments. The results of the paper illustrate the potential for deploying HOWiWaES in Greece, especially in the offshore areas of Crete and in a lengthwise zone extended from North-central to central Aegean. Bangladesh is a hugely populated country in South Asia. The country produces its electricity mainly from natural gas followed by liquid fuels. Although the installed electricity generation capacity of the country has been increased to 12,261 MW, there is scarcity of electricity in the hot summer season which is a barrier to industrial development as well as socio-economic development. Combustion of fossil fuels releases greenhouse gases (GHGs) into the atmosphere which causes global warming. Bangladesh can be badly affected by greenhouse effect and global warming. These problems can be mitigated by incorporating renewable energy sources (e.g., solar, wind, hydro, biomass, etc.) to the country's electricity generation. Renewable energy resources are considered as clean and can serve the electricity demand in the remote areas where grid connection is not possible. The potential of solar energy and biomass is enormous in Bangladesh and people have already started to harness energy from these sources. The government and the policy makers should come forward to encourage the people of rural areas as well as urban areas to use renewable based electricity. The government of Bangladesh has set up a plan to generate 5% of the country's total electricity from renewable sources within 2015 and 10% within 2020. However, within 2015 the country has been able to generate only 3.5% of the total electricity from renewable sources. Bioenergy conversion technologies have been frequently described and analysed in the literature, but a comprehensive and detailed comparison between the complex individual characteristics of each technology is still lacking. Therefore, the paper contains a description of the technical, economic and environmental properties of each technology with a special focus on the German bioenergy sector. The study presents an analysis of different bioenergy applications with regard to their specifications, power/heat output range and their areas of application. Due to the fact, that biomass combustion applications are the most widespread and market proven renewable conversion technologies, a detailed analysis of decentralised, biomass-fired CHP plants is presented in the paper. The overview of the individual characteristics of different biomass conversion routes shows that biogas plants achieve high electrical efficiencies, are available with a broad range of capacities and belong to the established technologies. Although the investment costs of biogas plants are relatively high, biomass conversion with anaerobic digestion can be seen as one of the most promising option for a sustainable energy supply in Europe. Renewable energy will be a crucial ingredient in the transition to a more sustainable future. The renewable energy sector requires a variety of financial support mechanisms in order to further consolidate and expand. Currently, the most prominent renewable energy support mechanisms are feed-in tariffs and renewable energy auctions. Although these mechanisms have been used and analyzed extensively in Western countries and, more recently, economies in transition, they have rarely been examined in the Arab Gulf region. Yet, particularly the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states have undertaken important steps towards renewable energy adoption, which could be greatly facilitated with the use of financial support mechanisms. This paper analyzes the feasibility of feed-in tariffs and renewable energy auctions adoption in GCC. Based on an extensive meta-analysis of the literature on these two mechanisms in both developed and developing countries, the paper identifies a set of conditions necessary for success and evaluates the presence of favorable these conditions in the GCC context. Our findings reveal that while conditions that would ensure political feasibility are largely absent for both types of mechanisms, auctions could be a more successful strategy at the moment. Small scale hydropower is one of the technology options to generate and supply electricity to grid off and rural applications with almost zero emission. Malaysia is blessed with abundance of water sources and receives high rain volume per year which can be used to generate power. This paper is carried out to present the potential of small scale hydropower in Malaysia and its current status at low head location and rural electrification. Moreover, the relevant research literatures for small scale hydropower technology and the challenges facing by small renewable energy power in Malaysia are also reviewed. The review of available works display that the estimated hydropower resources in Malaysia are registered to be 29,000 MW, of which 500 MW is from small (mini)-hydro power. For this, a total of 149 sites for small hydropower potential have been identified in the country and the expected potential by 2020 is 490 MW. Despite hydro-power technologies are preferable choices for energy generation in Malaysia, they have not been fully exploited yet due to some technical, economical, and institutional challenges. Sustainability has become a critical perspective in managing firms via a holistic approach by considering economic, environmental and social dimensions of firms. With the rising significance of sustainable development, the theories of sustainability in firms have evolved during the past six decades. This article offers a critical review of the evolving theories linking sustainability to firms, and discusses their implications for future renewable energy research. The relationships among different theories are critically analysed, and the directions for future research are discussed. The paper shows that, the main theories linking sustainability to firms, in a chronological order, are: 1) Corporate Social Responsibility, 2) Stakeholder Theory, 3) Corporate Sustainability, and 4) Green Economics. Currently various innovative approaches and new theories emerged, such as Co-evolution Theory and Multi-level Perspective, reflecting three directions of theory development, namely 1) shifting from "what" to "how", 2) growing use of interdisciplinary approach, and 3) towards broader systems. Biodiesel is one kind of biofuel that is renewable, biodegradable and has similar properties of fossil diesel fuel. The aim of this paper is to provide the substantial information on biodiesel to the researchers, engineers and policy makers. To achieve the goal, this paper summarizes the information on biofuel development, feedstocks around the world, oil extraction technic, biodiesel production processes. Furthermore, this paper will also discuss the advantages of biodiesel compared to fossil fuel. Finally, the combustion behavior of biodiesel in an internal combustion engine is discussed and it will help the researchers and policy maker and manufacturer. To determine the future and goal of automotive technology the study found that, feedstock selection for biodiesel production is very important as it associates 75% production cost. Moreover, the test of fuel properties is very important before using in the engine which depends on the type of feedstocks, origin country, and production process. Most of the researchers reported that the use of biodiesel in diesel engine reduces engine power slightly but reduces the harmful emission significantly. Grid code compliance verification shall include revision of documentation covering technical data and models, checking of requested capabilities, and validation of model performance. The major contributor to global warming is human-generated greenhouse gases (GHGs) emissions that pollute the air. GHGs emissions are a global issue dominated by emission of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ). Notably, CO 2 accounts for an estimated 77% of GHGs and thus has a huge impact on the environment. The capture, sequestration, and utilization of CO 2 emissions from flue gas are now becoming familiar worldwide. These methods are a promising solution to promote sustainability for the benefit of future generations. Previously, many researchers have focused on capturing and storing CO 2 ; however, less effort has been spent on finding ways to utilize flue gas emissions. Moreover, several issues must be overcome in the field of carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) technology, especially regarding the cost, capacity of storage and the durability of the storage reservoir. In addition, this paper addresses new technology in carbon capture and sequestration. To make CCS technology more feasible, this paper suggests a sustainable method combining CCS and biofuel production using CO 2 as a feedstock. This method offers many advantages, such as CO 2 emission mitigation and energy security through the production of renewable energy. In this paper, five most emerging renewable energy sources are analyzed. These emerging renewables are either special or advanced forms of the mainstream energy sources (solar, wind, geothermal, biofuels, biomass, and hydro) or brand new technologies. The five emerging renewable technologies discussed in this paper include marine energy, concentrated solar photovoltaics (CSP), enhanced geothermal energy (EGE), cellulosic ethanol, and artificial photosynthesis. Marine energy is divided into wave energy, tidal energy, tidal/ocean currents, salinity gradient, and ocean thermal energy conversion. CSP technologies are divided into parabolic troughs, linear Fresnel reflectors, parabolic dishes, and solar towers. The process for developing EGE reservoirs is also explained in detail. Cellulosic ethanol energy extraction is explained for both cellulolysis and gasification. Artificial photosynthesis is explained by considering semiconductor particles, electrolyzers, artificial leaves, and dye-synthesized solar cells. Renewable energy sources (including hydropower, wind, biomass, geothermal, tidal, wave and solar energy sources) can satisfy the present and future energy demands, with minor environmental impact respect to traditional sources of energy. Solar energy is the cheapest and widely available renewable energy and solar cooling systems are a green cold production technology that produce minor CO 2 emissions due to use of heat pumps. Infect, absorption refrigeration is a mature technology that has proved its applicability with the possibility to be driven by low grade solar energy. In this contest, thermal storage systems contribute to balance the disadvantages of the intermittent nature of solar energy and the variation in cooling demand, receiving more attention of researchers in the recent years. This paper presents an innovative and comprehensive literature review on solar systems integrated with environmental-friendly processes as absorption heat pumps and thermal energy storages. A study about processes regarding the renewable and sustainable energy according the European policy is carried out. Photovoltaic and photovoltaic/thermal solar systems can be used to this purpose and are the most promising technologies growing very fast in recent years. The accurate assessment of the potential wind energy at a define site is very important from economic point of view, measures cost effectiveness of the project and helps estimating future incomes, revenues. Knowledge of wind characteristics also facilitates a proper turbine design selection. There are different techniques for wind energy evaluation. The direct wind speed measurement is the most accurate method to determine wind conditions, but often the different wind speed frequency distributions are proposed. One of the most widely used distribution is Weibull distribution. The two-parameter Weibull distribution is recognized as an appropriate model and the most widely used in the wind industry sector. In some cases, in which the probability of null wind is significant, the Weibull distribution does not reveal good conformity for the low wind speed. In theory, it seems that the three-parameter Weibull distribution, which takes into account the frequency of null winds, may better represent wind ranges with high percentages of null wind speeds and may give better results. In the paper, the review of the literature is carried out on the application of two and three-parameter Weibull distribution in wind energy analyses and also focuses on the comparison of results received from different probability density functions, used in cited papers, with the frequency of 0–2 m/s wind speed range in real data. For higher percentages of null wind speeds or the wind speed below 2 m/s, the three-parameter Weibull model should have the advantage in relation to two-parameter Weibull distribution, gives more appropriate results and can be proposed as an alternative to wind energy estimation technique. Nowadays, some Multi-terminal DC (MTDC) systems are in operation around the world. Soon, MTDC grids will be built and overlay the present AC grids. The main driver for the construction of such a grid is to facilitate large-scale integration of remote renewable energy sources to existing AC grids and to develop the energy market. This paper presents a comprehensive analogy between the control and operation aspects of the emerging MTDC grids to those of the traditional AC power grids. Similarities and difference between the two technologies are presented and highlighted. Based on the performed detailed overview, even though a three-layered control system, i.e., primary, secondary, and tertiary control layers is state-of-the-art in large-scale AC power systems, a two-layered control system will satisfy MTDC grids control and operation requirements. The combustion of fossil fuels for purposes of energy production has accelerated the rate at which the planet is warming, thereby causing adverse effects on natural ecosystems across the globe. The consequences of climate change arising from the use of conventional fuels such as coal, oil, and gas demands a shift towards the use of sustainable, emissions-free renewable energy technologies. When planning for the implementation of new energy systems, several factors must be examined in order to determine the viability of a system to meet energy demands in a sustainable and efficient manner. This paper provides an overview of tidal current turbines (TCTs), examining how they function to produce electricity, the possible environmental impacts surrounding large-scale implementation, associated economic factors, and public acceptability. A case study of the Gulf of St. Lawrence is presented as an implementation site, demonstrating the potential for TCTs to assist in phasing out the use of fossil fuels for electricity generation on the Newfoundland island interconnected electricity system. A multi-criteria decision making matrix is presented to discern the benefits of TCTs compared to fossil fuels for the purpose of electricity generation. Unit Commitment (UC) is an optimization problem used to determine the operation schedule of the generating units at every hour interval with varying loads and generations under different generational, environmental and technical constraints. With the significant increase of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) integration into the power networks, effects posed by these system changes to the UC are actively being studied and investigated by global researchers and operation engineers. To this end, this paper firstly provides a literature survey of UC concept, objectives and constraints. Different UC models developed for addressing RES impacts are also reviewed. Moreover, many algorithms have been proposed in the past few decades to optimize the UC problem. This work explores the necessity for alternative optimization approaches for UC solution. In doing that, the work uncovers the advantages and disadvantages of the existing methodologies so that future algorithms could be designed in retaining the advantages of the existing methodologies while avoiding the presented weaknesses. In addition, installation of energy storage devices to balance the fluctuation in power generation and their associated impacts on UC models are reviewed. The production of electricity from hydropower results in several environmental impacts that, in only some instances, have been analysed from an economic valuation approach. Moreover, as environmental impacts largely depend on the specific characteristics of the case study, benefit transfer techniques are inadequate for valuation. The present paper demonstrates through the review of valuation studies on the environmental impacts of this technology, and the analysis of the different environmental impacts associated with hydropower for specific case studies that in fact benefit transfer should not be applied as each hydropower plant has specific and different impacts. The paper demonstrates the importance of a case study approach, for defining priorities with respect to alternative hydropower production facilities. India with a fast growing demand for electricity and increasing consideration to emissions reduction is investing strongly in renewable electricity generation. Among renewables, the Central and State Governments have set aspirational targets for on-grid solar electricity and legislated several supporting policies to realise these targets. As a result of the favourable political environment, the development of on-grid solar, in terms of the rate of growth in installed capacity, has been increasing in the recent years, and it is expected to continue in the future. This paper aims to investigate the impact of historical transitions of India's electricity sector on the ongoing development of on-grid solar electricity and to explore the prospect of solar sector development in the future. First of all, we investigate how the historical transformation of governmental intervention's approach intertwined with the gradual shift of the source of generation has paved the way for the current achievements in on-grid solar electricity. Second, we envision the future challenges and opportunities for the development of solar sector by looking ahead and discussing the continuity of government's support and the prospective competitions between different sources. The electric vehicle (EV) technology addresses the issue of the reduction of carbon and greenhouse gas emissions. The concept of EVs focuses on the utilization of alternative energy resources. However, EV systems currently face challenges in energy storage systems (ESSs) with regard to their safety, size, cost, and overall management issues. In addition, hybridization of ESSs with advanced power electronic technologies has a significant influence on optimal power utilization to lead advanced EV technologies. This paper comprehensively reviews technologies of ESSs, its classifications, characteristics, constructions, electricity conversion, and evaluation processes with advantages and disadvantages for EV applications. Moreover, this paper discusses various classifications of ESS according to their energy formations, composition materials, and techniques on average power delivery over its capacity and overall efficiencies exhibited within their life expectancies. The rigorous review indicates that existing technologies for ESS can be used for EVs, but the optimum use of ESSs for efficient EV energy storage applications has not yet been achieved. This paper is to assess the current trend, implementation and future possibilities of solar home systems (SHS) at the non-electricity provided study area in Bangladesh. The study also suggests an applicable plan to solve the problems and assure the proper availability and using compatibility of SHS to the poor and helpless rural people. The study area of the research is Lechraganj Char Union, Harirampur subdistrict of Manikganj district in Bangladesh. European Commission has set clear targets for 2020 regarding energy and environment policy; these targets include 20% cut in greenhouse gas emissions against the 1990 levels. It is believed that adopted strategy has encouraged the renewable energy applications during the last two decades. Moreover, measurement deviations of carbon dioxide flux occurring in respiration chambers has been seen of a great importance to explain the biochemical parameters affecting the climate change issue. This is attributed on many occasions to chamber design constraints and the way they are coupled with the studied site location. This is illustrated by external disturbances whereby when they happen while gas measurements are taken measurement deviations become more evident. This paper surveys the different soil physical, biological and geotechnical parameters and links them to meteorological ones. Consequently it explores their direct and indirect effects to the produced soil efflux. Furthermore this paper proposes several soil temperature models according to the studied case constraints to see what affects soil efflux production. Moreover a clear understanding of what affects the measurement process was achieved through surveying all the internal and external pressure parameters and how they influence the chamber in relation to time. The conclusion is that respiration chamber designers need to preserve chamber internal temperature and pressure to be equal to the outer atmosphere for the case of stabile external conditions. For the case of unstable external conditions design counter measures are incorporated. Furthermore the appropriate gas sensor needs to be selected professionally with emphasis on the importance of installation location inside the chamber. Turkey’s rapid economic growth followed by increasing gap between domestic energy production and consumption signifies the large-scale integration of low-carbon and renewable resources into energy system. Turkey’s energy demand is increasing and supplying fossil energies such as oil and gas is becoming more challenging due to the lack of domestic hydrocarbon resources. The country is facing two main issues; first, maintaining energy balance and second, handling environmental issues. Nevertheless, Turkey has substantial renewable and low-carbon energy resources with co-benefits for the country’s fast growing economy and environmental sustainability. This paper aims to present a comprehensive update on Turkey’s renewable and low-carbon energy sector. It reviews not only the current status of the technology, policy and economy, but also provides an insight into the social aspects as well. From a policy point of view, the paper critically discusses Turkey’s energy strategy and perspectives and from the social point of view, the paper argues that there is a research gap in recent literature regarding public awareness and social acceptance of low-carbon energy technologies. In this paper, the concept of power tracking for PV systems is highlighted and an overview on 40 old and recent Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) methods, available in the literature, is presented and classified. These methods are mathematically modeled and presented in such a way the reader can select the most appropriate method for his own application.
