China has been introducing reforms in the electricity market. Since 2016, electricity retailers are allowed to operate in the market once monopolized by traditional power companies. This regulatory environment demands new types of purchase contracts to remunerate the energy agents and deliver better prices for consumers fairly and sustainably. This paper proposes two new electricity purchase contracts with risk sharing mechanism and studies on wind power supplier's optimal capacity investment problem under supply and demand uncertainty. Firstly, a basic model for fixed demand contract is developed, and the optimal capacity is obtained. Secondly, the fixed commitment order contract and the forecast order contract with risk sharing mechanism are proposed to manage the fluctuation of wind power supply randomness. With backward induction, the optimal investment capacity of wind power supplier is solved, and then the fixed order quantity or forecast demand quantity of the electricity retailer can be obtained. Our results show that the fixed order quantity may have a positive influence on the wind power supplier's capacity investment decision. While, the forecast order quantity may have a negative influence on the wind power supplier's capacity investment decision. In addition, wind density has a strong influence on wind power capacity investment, and it has a positive impact on wind power supplier's profit, but it does not always have a positive impact on electricity retailer's profit. At last, based on numerical analysis, we examine how the wind density distribution coefficient change affect members' profit in the electricity supply chain. We also find that even with wind curtailment punishment, the forecast order contract can make a Pareto improvement on the whole electricity supply chain. Recently China's wind power industry is challenged by many problems such as wind power integration and wind curtailment, which seriously hinders the development of onshore wind power. Since China's policy has a direct and significant influence on wind power industry, it is vital to analyze and evaluate published policies. This paper explores in detail 134 China's onshore wind power policies from 2005 to 2015 so as to provide analytical support for future formulation and implementation of wind power policy. Based on policy summary from equipment manufacturing industry, wind farms and power grid industry, this paper evaluates the policies from the perspective of overall plan, support policy and policy implementation using fitting method, game theory and empirical analysis. The results indicate that China's wind policy is gradually becoming perfected, for example, there are more reasonable objectives and improved support policies. However, many problems remain to be solved, like unreasonable planning, imperfect support policies, immature trading systems and uncoordinated actions among interest related parties. In the context of carbon neutrality, renewable energy, especially wind power, solar PV and hydropower, will become the most important power sources in the future low-carbon power system. Since wind power and solar PV are specifically intermittent and space-heterogeneity, an assessment of renewable energy potential considering the variability of wind power and solar PV with high temporal resolution in different regions will facilitate more accurate identification of the decarbonization pathway of power system. In this paper, the complementary output potential of wind-solar-hydro power every 15 min in 31 Chinese provinces is evaluated by developing a multi-objective optimization model based on Nondominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II. The results show that the total annual complementary power generation potential in China is 17.57 PWh, of which the three components account for 47.8%, 25.3% and 26.9%, respectively. Inner Mongolia and Tibet are the major renewable energy source provinces with annual complementary power generation potential of 5330 TWh and 3907 TWh, accounting for 30.3% and 13.7% of the total power generation potential, respectively. The temporal potential of wind-solar-hydro power varies greatly, with daily potential is more volatile than monthly. Seasonal and spatial heterogeneity of the complemental renewable potential makes some provinces suffer power shortage during long-hours period especially in winter. The rapid growth of China׳s installed wind power capacity in recent years is closely related to the wind energy policies issued by the Chinese government. Using content analysis and quantitative analysis methods, this paper studies the historical evolution of Chinese wind energy policies. Based on 72 wind energy policies issued in the past two decades (1995–2014), this paper analyzes the issuing organization, form, number and stringency of wind energy policies and compares different policy instruments in two periods. The results show that the number and stringency of wind energy policies fluctuated greatly from 1995 to 2014 and that more than twenty organizations had independently or jointly issued the policies. The main organization issuing wind energy policies, however, is the department that controls key economic and administrative resources and not the one that is in charge of wind energy. Of the 72 policies issued, twenty-three took the form of notices, and eleven were measures. As to the policy instrument, environmental policies are most widely applied by the Chinese government, and “regulation control” and “goal-planning” instruments are the ones most frequently adopted. Since 2010 China has faced a worrying phenomenon “wind curtailment” in the development and operation of the wind power industry. This phenomenon has resulted in sharp decline of the utilization hours of the wind power equipment, seriously affected the economic benefits of the wind farms and caused serious energy waste. The wind curtailment in China is seemingly caused by the volatility of the wind power technical characteristics. However, judging from a deep level, the planning, networking management and policies play a critical role. With analysis this paper makes such a conclusion: it is not practical to solve the wind curtailment of China solely with the technical solutions and comprehensive measures must be taken. The paper offers strategies from the planning, policy and technical levels to solve the wind curtailment problem according to the actual situation of China and by referring to experiences of developed countries. Abstract: Wind power and solar PV power are the two major renewable energy technologies that are currently under rapid development in China. In this paper, the similarities and differences between the development trajectories of the two sectors are examined in terms of development status, development policy and development trend. Abstract: As the largest developing country, China has abundant wind, biomass and solar energy resources. Due to the uneven distribution of renewable resources and electricity load centers in China, renewable energy usually needs to be delivered a long distance from the generation base to the load center. However, wind power and photovoltaic (PV) have to be bundled with flexible resources, such as thermal generators, to compensate for the generation uncertainty and variability. Concentrating solar power (CSP) is a controllable generation technology, and it is receiving great attention in the northwest China to be constructed in the 100% renewable energy generation base. This paper proposes a generation portfolio optimization model of a 100% renewable energy base supported by CSP. Firstly, a flexible operation model of CSP based on the interval theory is proposed. Then, a coordinated operation strategy of a 100% renewable energy base organized by CSP, wind power, PV and also energy storage is formulated. On this basis, a generation portfolio optimization model is established with the target of minimizing an extended levelized cost of energy (LCOE) considering the transmission cost. A case study of 100% renewable energy base in Qinghai Province, China, is conducted to verify the effectiveness of the proposed model. It is depicted that CSP plays an important role in the cost-effective portfolio and can be a better alternative to the combination of PV and storage. Abstract: Since 2005, there has been dramatic progress in China''s wind power industry. The annual growth rate of newly constructed capacity reached a miracle of 105% and the total installed capacity has increased from 1.27GW in 2005 to 44.73GW in 2010, which has exceeded the target of China''s energy long-term planning for 2020. During the 11th Five-Year-Plan (FYP), the Chinese government has issued a series of polices to promote and regulate the development of wind power industry, which is the underlying force driving its rapid development. This paper is a systematical review on the current status and policies of wind power industry in China. Firstly the current status including achievements and shortcomings is presented, and then the relevant polices and regulations released during the period of 11th FYP are reviewed. Meanwhile, the main approaches of the policies and regulations in promoting the development of wind power industry are discussed and the issues of the current policies are analyzed. Abstract: China, one of the global biggest emitter of CO2, needs promotion renewable energy to reduce air pollution from its surging fossil fuel use, and to increase its energy supply security. Renewable energy in its infancy needs policy support and market cultivation. Wind power installed capacity has boomed in recent year in China, as a series of effective support policies were adopted. In this paper, I review the main renewable energy policies regarding to China''s wind power, including the Wind Power Concession Program, Renewable Energy Law, and a couple of additional laws and regulations. Such policies have effectively reduced the cost of wind power installed capacity, stimulated the localization of wind power manufacture, and driven the company investment in wind power. China is success in wind power installed capacity, however, success in wind-generated electricity has yet achieved, mainly due to the backward grid system and lack of quota system. Abstract: China is the largest developing country in the world. At present, more and more energy demand gives immense pressure to Chinese government. The inappropriate energy structure must be improved by Chinese government in order to achieve the sustainable development of economy and society. Development and application of renewable energy, such as wind energy, solar energy, biomass energy, etc., have been regarded by the government and the local people in the past 10 years, and more and more actual examples have been established, which are supported by government and plants in China. It is well known that there are abundant wind and solar resources in China. This paper presents the distribution zone and development and application practice status in China. However, a common drawback is existing in the stand-alone wind energy and solar energy generating power system, which is the unpredictable output electric power, and the output power depends on the unpredictable weather and climatic changes. Fortunately, the wind–solar hybrid generation system can partially overcome the problems. The conventional structure and key technology of stand-alone wind–solar hybrid generating system, the current status and outlook of wind–solar hybrid energy system are presented in the paper, for example, the city road lighting system, distributed generation, photovoltaic (PV) water pumping for irrigation, etc. At the end, the policies and laws of China central government and local governments are described, and the development barriers and recommendations are introduced. As a renewable energy, wind power has been improving energy structures and assisting in the maintenance of strategic energy security. Based on provincial level panel data from 2000 to 2018, this paper developed models to evaluate the effects of different policies on newly installed wind power capacity and investigated the market reform influences on wind development in eight spot market pilots. It was found that on a national level, while the pricing and government guideline policies significantly promoted wind power growth, present market reforms were having an opposite effect. The results also suggested that from a resource endowment heterogeneity perspective, there was a significant difference in the wind capacity promotion policy performances. Additionally, of the eight spot market pilots, market designs had led to a significant reduction in new wind power installations in Gansu and Inner Mongolia, and no significant wind power development effects were found in the other pilots. Due to atmospheric pollution from fossil fuels, the reduction of wind turbine costs, and the rise of the low-carbon economy, wind energy conversion systems have become one of the most significant forms of new energy in China. Therefore, to reduce investment risk and maximize profits, it is necessary to assess wind resources before building large wind farms. This paper develops a comprehensive system containing four steps to evaluate the potential of wind resources at two sites in Xilin Gol League and at additional two sites in Alxa League of Inner Mongolia, China: (1) By calculating the total scores of three indexes, including the effective wind power density (EWPD), wind available time (WAT) and population density (PD), an indexes method is applied to assess the theoretical wind energy potential from 2001 to 2010. (2) To judge the fluctuations in the wind speed, the Fisher optimal partition method and the Jonckheere–Terpstra test are used to analyze the changes in the average monthly and yearly wind speeds from 2001 to 2010. (3) Three probability density functions, i.e., Weibull, Gamma and Lognormal, are used to assess the wind speed frequency distribution in 2010. To enhance the evaluation accuracy, three intelligent optimization parameter estimation algorithms, i.e., the particle swarm optimization algorithm (PSO), differential evolution algorithm (DE) and ant colony algorithm (ACO), are used to estimate the parameters of these distributions. (4) It is helpful to analyze the wind characteristics when assessing wind resources and selecting wind turbines. Therefore, the optimal frequency distribution based on the best parameter estimation method can be chosen to calculate the wind power density, the most probable wind speed and the wind speed carrying the maximum energy. Wind power generation has increased rapidly in China over the last decade. In this paper the authors present an extensive survey on the status and development of wind power generation in China. The wind resource distributions in China are presented and assessed, and the 10 GW-scale wind power generation bases are introduced in details. To date, China has the world's largest wind power generation capacity, followed by the United States. Yet, China's utilization of this installed capacity trails that of the United States by a huge gap. This paper seeks to explain this gap by focusing on the role of institutions. First, it analyzes the institutions that either facilitate or impede wind integration in the two countries. Next, it synthesizes these institutions into coherent institutional logics for China and the United States. Then, it corroborates the institutional analysis with empirical evidence from China and the United States. Finally, it compares the two countries and summarizes what China can learn from the United States to reduce wind curtailment. Overall, this paper finds that China's dominant institutional logic of wind integration is state centrism and it is complemented by partial decentralization and liberalization – a system that is more conducive to capacity addition than capacity utilization. By contrast, the United States' dominant institutional logic of wind integration is market competition but a competing logic also exists which is regulatory interventionism – a system that aligns capacity addition and utilization better but engenders greater policy uncertainty. Because the two countries have distinct institutional logics that generate different root causes for wind curtailment, this paper argues that simply transplanting solutions from the United States to China will not work. The goal of carbon neutrality provides a new opportunity for the development of renewable energy, especially for wind power. In this paper, 11 regional climate models (RCMs) including CORDEX-EA and PRECIS at two different resolutions are used to evaluate the performance in simulating the spatio-temporal characteristics for wind speed and energy potential from 1981 to 2005. The results show that most models can reproduce the spatio-temporal patterns, and the simulation of the eastern region is better than that of the western region. Besides, most of the higher-resolution models had better simulation performance for spatial-temporal patterns and inter-annual variation. Then, the weighted multi-model ensemble is used to project the changes of the wind speed and the wind power density over China's mainland during the mid-21st century under the RCP8.5 scenario. In future, a decrease in wind speed is projected by most RCMs over China, although some regions, such as the southern parts of China, are projected to have more wind energy potential. The percentage variation of annual mean wind speed will remain in the range of ±4%. The wind power density will decrease in the north and the largest decrease will be found in the northwest. However, the annual mean wind power density in the southeast China will have an increase of 2.21% in the middle of this century. The inter-annual variation of the wind power density in most regions will increase by more than 20%. However, intra-annual variation in the wind power density is likely to decrease in most regions of China, ranging from about −20% to −50%. • A weighted multi-model ensemble was used to project the changes of wind power density over China. • The changes of annual mean wind power density vary in different sub-regions of China, ranging from −3.21% to 2.21%. • The inter-annual variation of the WPD in most regions will increase by more than 20%. Renewable energy (RE) trade disputes have been rising in response to certain green industrial policies, i.e., policy mechanisms used to develop domestic RE industries and accrue associated local economic benefits. Since 2011, countries have been increasingly filing trade litigations to counter the use of green industrial policies by their trading partners so that they can expand RE industry competitiveness and the associated manufacturing jobs within their own countries. However, in the absence of systematic studies on the impacts of RE trade duties, evidence regarding their success in achieving these economic goals remains limited. In this paper, the effectiveness of RE trade duties in supporting employment, especially in manufacturing, is assessed. First, the literature on the motivations behind RE trade duties is reviewed, and then the case of trade duties imposed by the US on the imports of solar and wind energy components from China between 2011 and 2019 is examined. Although several factors may drive employment, no evidence is found for the increase in jobs in solar and wind manufacturing in the years after the trade duties were imposed. Meanwhile, downstream jobs in installation, operation and maintenance continued to grow, corresponding to increases in annual installation of solar and wind capacity in the US. These were driven by policy incentives and the declining costs of solar and wind technologies. As wind power resources are abundant, China’s wind power industry has entered a period of rapid growth since 2005, and constantly facing new challenges at the same time. In this paper, the general situation of China’s wind power resource and wind power industry development are introduced. On this basis, future development potential and target of wind power industry are analyzed combining with the recent introduction of the policy and the “Twelfth Five-Year Plan”. The main obstacles prevailing in the development such as grid integration, price mechanism, industry standard system, and supporting policies are discussed. As the energy crisis becomes a greater concern, wind energy, as one of the most promising renewable energy resources, becomes more widely used. Thus, wind energy forecasting plays an important role in wind energy utilization, especially wind speed forecasting, which is a vital component of wind energy management. In view of its importance, numerous wind speed forecasts have been proposed, each with advantages and disadvantages. Searching for more effective wind speed forecasts in wind energy management is a challenging task. As proposed, combined models have desirable forecasting abilities for wind speed. This paper reviewed the combined models for wind speed predictions and classified the combined wind speed forecasting approaches. To further study the combined models, two combination models, the no negative constraint theory (NNCT) combination model and the artificial intelligence algorithm combination model, are proposed. The hourly average wind speed data of three wind turbines in the Chengde region of China are used to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed combination models, and the results show that the proposed combination models can always provide desirable forecasting results compared to the existing traditional combination models. China is the global leader in terms of installed wind capacity. Further, wind energy development is expected for the next years and decades to meet the continuously increasing electricity demand and the need of using clean domestic energy. Since 2009 China is divided into four geographical regions, each assigned with a different benchmark on-grid tariff. Moreover the existing infrastructures are not equally developed throughout the country, making investment decisions more complicated and risky. The scope of this paper is to apply an innovative methodology and evaluate the attractiveness of each region for wind energy development, by taking into consideration all relevant investment risks, such as wind potential, wind curtailment, access to the grid and macroeconomic parameters. To this purpose a Monte Carlo simulation approach, integrated into a typical financial model, is implemented in each of the four regions, performing many hundreds of iterations, each characterized by a randomly selected set of the examined uncertain parameters. This approach intends to provide information to private investors doing a first exploratory research in the huge country׳s area in order to decide whether and where to invest, as well as to policy makers to help them assess critical policy parameters and investigate different scenarios of wind energy development. The evaluation of the current framework for wind energy development in China verifies that the existing system of feed-in tariffs in China is very effective for the balanced deployment of wind energy in the whole country. However, it is shown that the risk of curtailment and grid accessibility may significantly reduce the potential profitability of wind energy investments in all four regions. Wind power industry has experienced swift development and gradually moved towards maturity in China. However some hiding issues have appeared and threatened its sustainable development. In this paper, we employ the supply chain framework to present a thorough and comprehensive review on China׳s wind power industry. First we identify key stakeholders along the supply chain and discuss their concerns. Then we summarize the evolution of related policies in both upstream and downstream of the supply chain. The concerns of stakeholders and the existing policies will help understand the progress and challenges of the industry in China. We find that inability of independent technique innovation, unordered and unbalanced pattern of wind farm development, de-motivation of power grid companies, incompatible technical codes of power grid operation, and neglected demand response are among the key issues. China is the largest power producer and consumer and has the largest installed capacity of wind turbines (WTs) worldwide. In the last two decades, China's installed capacity of WTs has exploded, significantly impacting its wind power (WP) industry and promoting the development of the industry globally. This paper examines China as one part of the world and elucidates its role, status, and impact on global WP development from a global perspective. Research indicates that China has become the global leader in WP, its WP development has greatly promoted the growth rate of global WP, and it has become an indispensable force in global WP development. However, the comprehensive capability of China's WP generation is not only lower than that of other major WP countries but also lower than the global average. China's WTs have low global recognition and are difficult to export. In addition, the proportion of WP in China's power structure is lower than that of most other major WP countries. Fortunately, these gaps between China and other major WP countries are gradually narrowing. Abstract: Wind power is one of the world׳s major renewable energy sources, and its utilization provides an important contribution in helping solve the energy problems of many countries. After nearly 40 years of development, China׳s wind power industry now not only manufactures its own massive six MW turbines but also has the largest capacity in the world with a national output of 50millionMWh in 2010 and set to rise by eight times of that amount by 2020. This paper investigates this development route by analyzing relevant academic literature, statistics, laws and regulations, policies and research and industry reports. The main drivers of the development in the industry are identified as technologies, turbines, wind farm construction, pricing mechanism and government support systems, each of which is also divided into different stages with distinctive features. A systematic review of these aspects provides academics and practitioners with a better understanding of the history of the wind power industry in China and reasons for its rapid development with a view to enhancing progress in wind power development both in China and the world generally. Abstract: In addition to providing a review of electricity generation developments in China, this paper features the development of a framework for understanding the socio-political economy influencing electricity market development. It documents and presents a critical evaluation of the social, technological, economic and political forces which influence electricity generation policy in China. The analysis provides insight into why China's electricity generation shopping basket is being filled with both coal and CO2-reduced electricity generation technologies. It concludes that installed capacity of hydro power, wind power, nuclear power and solar PV power will outpace government projections due to inter alia a proclivity on the part of the Chinese government to set conservative (and achievable) targets, waning apathy toward pollution associated with coal-fired power, progressive improvements in grid connection and resilience, increased economic viability of these alternative energy sources and government support for these industries as strategic commercial sectors. Abstract: Wind power installation in China has increased rapidly since 2004. However, wind power usage remains relatively low resulting in a lot of idle capacity beginning in 2007. In this paper, we determine the main framework of China's current wind power policies and illustrate how these policies led to the rapid installation expansion accompanied by large idle capacity. Building on this, we explore how to alleviate the high installation low wind power usage conflict in China. We establish optimal models to (i) analyze wind power and power grid company behavior; (ii) demonstrate the impact of China's current policies on power and grid companies; and (iii) clarify the causes and mechanisms resulting in high growth and low wind power capacity usage. Our analysis shows that the incentive incompatibility of current policies, which enticed power companies to pursue installation expansion regardless of quality while inhibiting grid companies from improving connectivity, transmission and scheduling technology, is the primary cause for such large-scale idle capacity. The results of our study suggest that the fundamental way to scale up wind power utilization is to enhance policy incentive compatibility, which mainly includes (i) distributing revenues and diversifying risk fairly between power and grid companies; and (ii) motivating power companies to address demand fluctuation actively. Abstract: The wind power industry is a complex industry involving many different types of enterprises from diverse fields loosely working together to form both internal and external associations. As a complicated system it is necessary to detect the location of the various industry components, their operation characteristics and the various relationships between the many sectors of the wind power industry. Using the general industry chain theory, this paper develops a wind power industry chain model and examines the operation mechanisms of the industry. This leads to the establishment of three perspectives for the wind power industry, these are the supply chain model, the technology chain model and the value chain model that respectively reflect the supply–demand relationship, technology transfer and value creation of wind power related industries. The models can be used to analyze: the resources distribution, the supply and demand and production relationships amongst related enterprises, the relevant technology systems and the value increase process of the wind power industry. Using China's wind power industry as an example, this study uses: (1) the supply chain to analyze the construction, equipment supply and the on-grid connection of wind power; (2) the technology chain to evaluate the technical status of China's wind power industry from the perspective of the level of technology, the source of the technology and the technology standard; and (3) the value chain to analyze the value distribution of China's wind power industry. The results suggest that over capacity, lack of core technology and an incomplete follow up service system are the major obstacles to China's wind power industry development. The models form an effective tool to analyze and evaluate the development status of the wind power industry in different countries, and support the concept of formulating a sustainable development strategy. Abstract: The rapid growth of China's economy has accelerated its energy demand, which is becoming more urgent. It is essential to exploit renewable energy because of the limited conventional energy, high energy consumption and serious pollution. China will strengthen the development and utilization of wind, solar, biomass and other renewable energies in the future, which will reduce the level of carbon emissions. However, China's rapid growth in renewable energy, particularly wind, has been accompanied with some growing pains, and there is room for improving the legal framework to address these challenges. A reasonable renewable energy tariff policy has a pivotal role for changing China's current situation. This paper introduced the current development situation of renewable energy, analyzed the evolution and implementation effect of the renewable energy tariff policy and discussed the problems of the renewable energy tariff policy in China. Abstract: With policy encouragement and capital investments, China's wind power has been enjoying a tremendous development for years. China has now become a global leader in terms of wind power capacity, with a total of 52.58 gigawatts of wind power connected to power grid. However, the overwhelming majority of accumulated and added installment is now embarrassing China's wind power by grid connectivity and power curtailment problems. In this paper, we provide a systematical review of China's wind power industry in the past six years, analyze the existing problems behind the remarkable statistics, examine the underlying causes for the problems, propose method for China's future wind power development. In order to have a profound understanding for the problems of China's wind power, we give a deeper look into three typical overcapacity regions. In order to mitigate global climate change and air pollution, the Chinese government has assigned high priority to expanding low-carbon power generation in China. Recent studies have shown that wind power is one of the most promising renewable energy option in China. Although many studies have estimated the generation potential of onshore wind power, their results vary widely from 1783 TWh to 39,000 TWh. Therefore, we examine the different assumptions in these papers and identify three main factors influencing the results. The three influencing factors are: weather data set, land utilisation factor, and wind turbine configuration. For our model-based analysis, we define a reference scenario which is used to compare the results. Our analysis shows using a different weather data set increases the generation potential to roughly 35,000 TWh. This is 54% higher than the generation potential of the reference scenario. The land utilisation factor also has a large influence, ranging between −10% and −51%. The studies' assumptions and data should be subjected to careful scrutiny, as the calculated wind power potentials are widely used to develop decarbonisation strategies for the energy system. • Study results on wind power potentials in China vary from 1783 TWh to 39,000 TWh • Influencing factors: weather data set, land utilisation, and wind turbine configuration. • Model-based sensitivity analysis with nine scenario settings. • Chosen weather data set has the highest impact on the calculated results with a variation of 54%. Abstract: It is highly significant for China to improve its development of wind power. In order to promote the sustainable development, a more comprehensive evaluation of factors affecting the effectiveness of investment in the industry wind power is required to be conducted to formulate a relatively stable policy supporting mechanism for the development of wind power. Based on the green accounting framework, this paper evaluates a typical wind power project from economic, environment and energy alternative respects comprehensively. We simulate the main factors influencing cost and benefit of the wind power investment with the Monte Carlo method. Abstract: With regard to energy conservation and the reduction of emissions, China is dedicated to facilitating the development of renewable energy in order to fulfil its international responsibility. In recent years, the installed wind power capacity in China has increased rapidly due to its large scale and centralization. The high penetration of wind power has brought about a series of problems such as the wind energy utilization and curtailment, auxiliary services and the pricing mechanism. The resolution of these problems needs policies which will provide more support than the current technologies and standards for wind power. This paper takes the evaluation of capability of accepting large-scale wind power in China as its object of study. According to the analysis of such risk factors as the influence of the grid on wind power integration, wind power itself, the market and policy, an evaluation model of the ability of accepting large-scale wind power is established based on risk theory. Then, the estimation of the ability to accept wind power in Gansu Province is used to testify to the effectiveness of this model. Finally, a series of reasonable policies for wind power are proposed. Abstract: China is facing a number of challenges such as electricity supply shortages, excessive consumption of fossil fuels and environmental pollution. As a renewable energy, wind power plays a vital role in mitigating these issues. With its unique geographical location and rich resources, China has produced a wind power industry that has achieved rapid growth. However, the complex Chinese market environment presents significant challenges to the industry. This research has adopted a strength, weakness, opportunity and threat analysis approach to examine both the internal and external factors that affect the competitiveness of the wind power industry in China. An extensive and critical review of a wide range of literature (including academic papers, industry reports, statistical data, relevant regulations and policy documents) was conducted. As a result, 19 factors were identified. These factors form part of an integrated framework that provides a useful tool for both policy makers and industry to gain a better understanding of what affects the sustainable development of the wind power industry in China. Abstract: Large-scale wind power transmission presents the power system with several challenges. The determination of the transmission tariff and the cost-sharing issue are potential obstacles which may influence the development of wind power. This paper analyses the incremental cost to the power system for long-distance transmission of wind power, considers the fixed and variable properties of the incremental cost and the risk of fluctuations in the cost, and establishes a comprehensive risk-based pricing model for long-distance transmission of large-scale wind power electricity. Gansu Province in China has abundant wind resources, so we use the Jiuquan wind power integration and the ±800kV Gansu-Zhuzhou direct current (DC) power transmission as examples to test the validity of the model. The conclusions are as follows: the allowances for access grid connection cost should be separately estimated for the large-scale wind power base and long-distance transmission; and the long-distance transmission pricing of large-scale wind power should apply a two-part electricity transmission pricing system, in order to eliminate the volatility risk inherent in each simple allocation method, and the fixed and variable characteristics of the transmission cost. The transmission price must include compensation for depreciation, operation and maintenance costs, and also a reasonable return on investment, in order to offer an effective incentive and guidance mechanism for enterprises’ business development. Abstract: Even though China''s wind power industry has experienced a rapid growth since the beginning of this century, the utilization of wind power is still worrisome. In 2010, about 30% of China''s total installed capacity could not get access to the grid. And about 10% of China''s total wind power generation was curtailed. The problem of wind power curtailment is more prominent in Northeast-China region. The main particularity of Northeast China Grid is as follows: during the long heating period in winter, combined heat and power thermal plants need to modify the turbine generator''s output to meet the heating demand and thus the thermal power peak regulation capacity is reduced, as a result the barriers of wind power consumption are increased. This paper provides a new perspective of the constraints on the effective utilization of wind power in the Northeast China Grid. We argue that there are two categories of constrained factors: structural factor and operational factor. The former includes grid structure, wind source structure, power source structure, and market structure. The latter includes power price mechanism, dispatch mode arrangement, wind power integration codes, and wind power forecast. Abstract: Wind energy, as a reliable, natural and renewable electrical power supply, produces no emissions and so it is an excellent alternative to conventional, more heavily polluting fuels in the long term based on the worldwide concern about the environment and energy supply. Wind energy resources in China are affluent, but its distribution are uneven, centralized, and far from both the utility and the high electricity demand markets. This made China''s onshore wind power development have such characteristics as large scale, high centralization and far transmission, which is different with that in Europe, where the characteristics are even distribution, decentralized. In past two decades, considering the economic, technical and environmental benefits of wind power, China has given priority to its development. Besides the dramatic growth of large scale grid-connected wind power, household-scale wind power has been used most successfully in remote rural regions in China. Therefore, the development of wind power will be of great importance to alleviate the energy crisis and environmental pollution resulting from the rapid economic growth of China in the future. In this paper, the current development of wind energy utilization in China is investigated, and some critical barriers are discussed. Abstract: With support from the Chinese government, the Chinese wind power generation industry is experiencing rapid development. The quick growth of the wind power generation industry has promoted the development of the Chinese wind turbine manufacturing industry. Similarly, the quantity and the productivity of the local Chinese Wind Turbine Manufacturers (WTMs) have also undergone a quick and significant expansion. This is resulting in an increase in competition amongst the WTMs in China. Being relatively new, this creates a fertile environment for local Chinese WTMs that is ripe for study and analysis. Based on the niche theory of industrial ecosystem and enterprise, this paper investigates the Chinese wind turbine manufacturing industry, and proposes a wind turbine manufacturing industry ecosystem model and a WTMs’ ecological niche evaluation index system (WENEIS). Use is made of a catastrophe theory model evaluation method to evaluate the ecological niche status of the 6 main local Chinese WTMs selected and a spider diagram is established to compare the status of the different enterprises’ ecological niche. The proposed WENEIS aids WTMs in finding the competitive advantage and disadvantage factors for their development, as well as providing a valuable reference for the WTMs to improve their business environment and to formulate their competitive strategy in the future. Abstract: Climate change and limited primary energy resources require indigenous renewable electricity generation options to change the current coal-dominated power source matrix in China. The wind power is such a solution for the above challenges, and it still has large space for improvement in China. In this paper several critical factors related to Chinese wind power were studied in details, including the wind resources, the wind turbine industry and the policies from the Chinese government. Based on the study, the perspective of wind power in China was discussed. With outstanding advantages, the offshore wind power has a bright future in China, so its main characteristics are discussed. Abstract: Indian wind energy sector has seen a CAGR of more than 27% during the period 2002–2007. However, the annual capacity additions has been declining for the past 2 years and recently, India lost one place in the Global ranking on total installed wind capacity to China. While issues like unfavourable tariff, non-uniform state policies, unavailability of evacuation infrastructure, etc. can be attributed to the slower pace of capacity addition, the issue of unavailability of on-shore wind sites with sufficiently high wind velocity is expected to take centre stage in the next 2–3 years. Wind sites with low wind velocity make the investment unattractive to developers. Given the current situation, repowering as an investment option, which has already seen favourable response in countries like Germany and Denmark, would start maturing in India. This paper analyzes the present situation of the wind energy in India, evaluates the different wind energy market segments including repowering market, provides financial highlights of the repowering concept and ends with concluding remarks on major triggers which can set this concept in motion. Abstract: This paper examines the current situation of wind industry development, evaluates the potentials of GHG mitigation and identifies the key determinants of scaling up wind power deployment in China. China has doubled its wind capacity every year for the past 4 years, the total installed capacity reached 12 Gigawatts (GW) and surpassed the 10-GW target 2 years ahead of schedule in the national plan for renewable energy development ,and would reach 100–120GW by 2020 according to the government’s new energy plan. It may become the biggest wind power generation and wind turbines manufacturing country of the world in the next years if the abundant wind resources and enormous domestic market can be harnessed with appropriate policies and efficient technology. The recent positive move in vigorous development of wind power in China implies that the total installed capacity will far exceed the targets of the government’s 2007 renewable energy plan. However, the prosperous Chinese wind market has also revealed some worrisome signals and weakness , such as low capacity factor and frequent outage of wind farms, inadequate grid infrastructure, long distance transmission, low quality of turbines, adverse price bidding, nepotism in wind farm developer selection process and regulatory uncertainty and policy inconsistency which all conspire to hinder effective power generation in the massively new installed wind capacities. A coherent policy framework is required for creating enabling environment for accelerating wind energy penetration and state-of-art technology deployment in the country. It is argued that institutional, financial and technical capacity will need to be cemented to exploit the huge potentials of wind resources to meet the rapidly growing demand for electricity in China in the coming decades with minimised environmental implications. Abstract: Because of the pressing need for maintaining a healthy environment with reasonable costs, China is moving toward the trend for generating electricity from renewable resources. Both solar energy and wind power have received a tremendous attention from private associations, political groups, and electric power companies to generate power on a large scale. A drawback is their unpredictable nature and dependence on weather. Fortunately, the problems can be partially tackled by using the strengths of one source to overcome the weakness of the other. Especially, a large fraction of the solar resource is available at times of peak electrical load. However, the complexity of using two different resources together makes the hybrid solar-wind generation systems more difficult to analyze. Accordingly, this paper first briefly introduces the solar-wind generation system and next develops its critical success criteria. Abstract: Wind power in China registered a record level of expansion recently, and has doubled its total capacity every year since 2004. Many experts believe that China will be central to the future of the global wind energy market. Consequently, the growth pattern of wind power in China may be crucial to the further development of the global wind market. This paper firstly presented an overview of wind energy potential in China and reviewed the national wind power development course in detail. Based on the installed wind capacity in China over the past 18 years and the technical potential of wind energy resources, the growth pattern was modeled in this study for the purpose of prospect analysis, in order to obtain projections concerning the development potential. China has the world's largest photovoltaic (PV) market, and its cumulative PV installation capacity reached more than 200 GW in 2019. However, a large gap remains to achieve the ambitious target of 1200 GW of wind and solar power installation capacity by 2030. Are there sufficient solar resources, and where should the PV modules be installed? There are no clear answers to these questions. This paper aims to identify the availability and feasibility of developing distributed solar PV (DSPV) systems in China's cities. The results show that China has many DSPV resources, but they are unevenly distributed. The potential for DSPV systems is greatest in eastern and southern China, areas of relatively low solar radiation. Furthermore, the difference in the potential of DSPV development among cities requires targeted policies for different geographical areas. Similarly, the difference in DSPV generation to satisfy the electricity demand in various sectors requires political and industrial efforts to address the mismatch between solar PV power generation capacity, electricity demand, and solar radiation in different regions. • The first study to calculate distributed solar PV (DSPV) potential at city level in China. • China has many DSPV resources, but they are unevenly distributed. • The DSPV resources such as industrial parks, public facilities and rooftops of buildings have been neglected. • Contribute to the decision-making process of the DSPV development by providing a quantitative, city-specific analysis of DSPV power generation. China has become the world's largest clean energy country in terms of the total installation of wind and photovoltaic power and annual newly installed capacity. However, weather conditions render renewable energy unstable, thereby restricting its application to a power grid; reducing the randomness in wind or photovoltaic power is the major challenge of the utilization of solar and wind energy. This paper systematically reviews the explorations and the practices related to wind and photovoltaic power consumption in China. Considering the difference in the methods of supplementing the variable and intermittent output of wind and PV power, five consumption modes are outlined: distributed energy microgrid absorption, power grid peak shaving operation consumption, wind-photovoltaic-storage consumption, wind-photovoltaic-thermal complementation, and wind-photovoltaic-hydro complementation. The theories, features, current situation and growing trends of each mode are analyzed. Finally, several suggestions, including promoting multi-energy complementary microgrid application and installing large-scale pumped storage hydropower, are provided for improving the efficiency of renewable energy development in China. • Practical variable energy consumption modes are outlined and analyzed. • Small-scale distributed wind and PV power is suitable for microgrid integration. • Medium-sized wind and PV power consumed through the main grid is reasonable. • Large-scale wind and PV can be combined and transmitted with hydro or thermal power. To fulfil a commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, promoting renewable energy accommodation is a major goal in establishing a spot market in light of China's 2015 electricity market reform. Eight representative provinces with different power supply structures and generation portfolios carry out simulated operations as initial pilot spot markets. The balancing market, a significant section of the spot market that addresses fair transaction settlements to eliminate system imbalance in real time, is diverse among these pilot spot markets. Therefore, effective methodological support is needed to analyse the interaction between balancing market design and participant behaviour considering the market environment in China. Based on the incentive compatibility of the market design with the actual situation in China, this paper assigns wind power producers as market participants, since wind power integration aggravates real-time imbalances due to its natural uncertainty and fluctuation. This study first summarizes the key elements of balancing market design in China that exert great influence on wind power producers; then, an offering strategy model of wind power producers is proposed embedding into the balancing market clearing model to reveal the interactive effect between balancing market design and the behavioural decisions of market participants and to investigate the adequacy of the entire market. Using an example, the effects of key factors on market adequacy and wind power revenue are discussed, including the tolerance margin, programme time unit (PTU) duration, and imbalance pricing mechanism. A kernel density estimation (KDE) model for the probability distribution of wind speed (PDWS) is proposed in this paper for application to wind energy assessment (WEA) in China. Four bandwidth selectors, including normal scale (NS), plug in, biased cross-validation, and least-square cross validation, are proposed for the KDE model. Popular parametric distribution models are also introduced for comparisons with the KDE models. Based on five-year day-average wind speed data from 698 nationwide wind stations in China, the performance and robustness of both parametric and KDE models were evaluated comprehensively on the regional scale. Wind power density (WPD) and wind turbine power output (WTPO), which are the priorities in WEA, are subsequently calculated based on the estimated PDWS models. The ranking results of four individual metrics and one comprehensive metric indicate that the four KDE models outperform the parametric models in fitting the PDWS. The KDE-NS model performs the best compared to the other three KDE models. In addition to the KDE models, the generalized gamma and generalized extreme values were considered as better parametric models in fitting the PDWS. KDE models also performed well in WPD estimation, especially the KDE-NS model with a mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) value as low as 2%. Some parametric models, i.e., Johnson SB and Wakeby, which are not outstanding in PDWS fitting, however perform well in WPD estimation, and their MAPE values can be controlled to remain within 3%. This indicates that the result of the PDWS is not completely equivalent to that of WPD estimation. The WPD and WTPO in most of China's interior areas are less than 40 W / m 2 and 1.2 GWh, respectively. In the eastern coastal areas, middle and eastern Inner Mongolia, and some western provinces, the WPD and WTPO are relatively higher, and can reach or exceed 240 W / m 2 and 3.5 GWh, respectively. • Four KDE models with various bandwidth selectors are proposed for fitting PDWS. • Popular parametric models are introduced for comparisons with the KDE models. • Performance of parametric and KDE models are evaluated on the regional scale. • KDE models generally outperform the parametric models in fitting PDWS. • KDE models also performs well in WEA analysis, especially for the KDE-NS.
