A combined Doppler backscattering/cross-polarization scattering (DBS/CPS) system is being deployed on MAST-U for simultaneous measurements of local density turbulence, turbulence flows, and magnetic turbulence. In this design, CPS shares the probing beam with the DBS and uses a separate parallel-viewing receiver system. In this study, we utilize a modified GENRAY 3D ray-tracing code to simulate the propagation of the probing and scattered beams. The contributions of different scattering locations along the entire beam trajectories are considered, and the corresponding local B̃ wavenumbers are estimated using the wavevector matching criterion. The wavenumber ranges of the local B̃ that are detectable to the CPS system are explored for simulated L- and H-mode plasmas.

A laser ion source based on Nd:YAG laser has been being studied at the Institute of Modern Physics for the production of high intensity high charge state heavy ion beams in the past ten years, for possible applications both in a future accelerator complex and in heavy ion cancer therapy facilities. Based on the previous results for the production of multiple-charged ions from a wide range of heavy elements with a 3 J/8 ns Nd:YAG laser [Zhao et al., Rev. Sci. Instrum. 85, 02B910 (2014)], higher laser energy and intensity in the focal spot are necessary for the production of highly charged ions from the elements heavier than aluminum. Therefore, the laser ion source was upgraded with a new Nd:YAG laser, the maximum energy of which is 8 J and the pulse duration can be adjusted from 8 to 18 ns. Since then, the charge state distributions of ions from various elements generated by the 8 J Nd:YAG laser were investigated for different experimental conditions, such as laser energy, pulse duration, power density in the focal spot, and incidence angle. It was shown that the incidence angle is one of the most important parameters for the production of highly charged ions. The capability of producing highly charged ions from the elements lighter than silver was demonstrated with the incidence angle of 10° and laser power density of 8 × 1013 W cm-2 in the focal spot, which makes a laser ion source complementary to the superconducting electron cyclotron resonance ion source for the future accelerator complex especially in terms of the ion beam production from some refractory elements. Nevertheless, great efforts with regard to the extraction of intense ion beams, modification of the ion beam pulse duration, and reliability of the ion source still need to be made for practical applications. The high spatial (≥2 mm depending upon plasma conditions) and temporal (10 µs) resolution possible with the DIII-D solid state profile reflectometer system makes it possible to investigate profile modifications associated with plasma instabilities. In order to take full advantage of this fast sweep and high resolution capability, multiple issues had to be addressed, including fast data acquisition, large data acquisition memory depth, improved signal to noise, accurate profile start location, and finally fast accurate automatic data analysis. Improvements in all these areas make the profile reflectometer ready for plasma instability studies. In a demonstration of this capability, fast, high spatial resolution reflectometer measurements have been successfully used to investigate the edge harmonic oscillation (EHO) in the quiescent double barrier regime, as well as the edge localized modes (ELMs) on DIII-D. It is found that the scrape-off layer density profile is modulated at the EHO fundamental frequency. The edge density profile evolution is also tracked during ELMs, showing that the density profile expands to the vessel wall at the onset of Type 1 ELMs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The perveance law for ion sources is modified based on experimental data gained during the conditioning phase of three multiaperture ion sources for neutral-beam injection into TEXTOR. The ion sources are modified JET PINIs with a three-grid accel-decel extraction system designed for 55 kV, 88 A, 4.8 MW, operated in hydrogen. Results show that best agreement of the perveance law with the experimental data is achieved when the measured ion species mixture is used and, additionally, when the total width of the first acceleration gap, usually determined by the geometrical distance d[sub 1] between grid 1 and grid 2 and thickness D[sub 1] of grid 1, is enlarged by a third distance term r[sub 2], taking the effect of distortion of the electrical field lines at the decel grid into account. At perveance matched conditions, i.e., minimum beam divergence, the optimum value is found to be r'[sub 2] = 0.8r[sub 2], where r[sub 2] is the aperture radius of the decel grid. Comparative measurements with high-pressure spark gaps (gas pressure: 0.2-0.9 MPa nitrogen, gap spacing 5 mm) are presented, one with a regular Bruce-profile polished graphite cathode (diameter 25 mm, thickness 8 mm) and the other with a microarray graphite cathode of equal dimensions. By microstructuring, a V-type graphite microarray is created by purpose-developed laser treatment of a plane graphite electrode. The microarray graphite cathode brings more initial plasma and then produces more initial electrons. It is beneficial for electron emission, which improves the stability of the switch breakdown. The experimental results are achieved at a gas pressure of 0.9 MPa and a 200-kV voltage pulse applied to the switch. With these parameters, the mean breakdown voltage is 91.7 kV, the minimum is 91.4 kV, and the mean relative standard deviation in breakdown voltage of the first 100 shots is 0.4%. Compared to a plane graphite cathode, the mean breakdown voltage is about 10% lower, and the mean relative standard deviation is reduced by more than 90%. In analog circuits, component tolerances and circuit nonlinearity pose obstacles to fault diagnosis. To solve this problem, a soft fault diagnosis method based on Sparrow Search Algorithm (SSA) and Support Vector Machine (SVM) is used. In this study, ISSA is obtained by optimization using four strategies for SSA deficiency. Twenty-three benchmark functions are used for optimization experiments, and ISSA converges faster, more accurately, and with better robustness than other swarm intelligence algorithms. Finally, ISSA is used to optimize the SVM parameters and establish the ISSA-SVM fault diagnosis model. In the Sallen-key test circuit diagnosis experiments, the correct fault diagnosis rates of SSA-SVM and ISSA-SVM are 97.41% and 98.15%, respectively. Piezoelectric actuators commonly used in microgrippers have a small stroke, and their accuracy is reduced by the transmission amplification unit, which leads to a contradiction between the clamping range and the clamping accuracy in existing piezoelectric-actuated microgrippers. This paper proposes a design scheme to divide the total clamping range of the microgripper into segments based on the compliant multistable mechanism (CMM). First, by using the stable equilibrium positions of the CMM, the total clamping range of the microgripper is divided into multiple smaller clamping sub-intervals to accommodate objects of different scales. Then, the theoretical models of the displacement amplification ratio of the microgripper amplification mechanism and the stiffness of the microgripper in different clamping sub-intervals are established, and the force-displacement characteristics of the CMM are analyzed. Next, through finite element simulation, the correctness of the theoretical analyses is verified, and it is shown that objects between 0 µm and 1.650 mm can be clamped using four clamping sub-intervals under a five times displacement amplification ratio. Finally, a microgripper of the CMM consisting of two three-segment fully compliant bistable mechanisms connected in series is designed and machined, and microgripper segmented clamping experiments are conducted. A sub-nanosecond clock synchronization scheme based on the field programmable gate array (FPGA) is proposed for the Fiber Channel (FC) communication system in this paper. The counter value of the slave node is synchronized to that of the master node through the embedded IEEE 1588 protocol over the communication link. In order to ensure the counter clocks have the same frequency in both nodes, which is recovered from the FC communication link, the clock phase difference is measured by the digital dual mixer time difference technique and the data recovery technique in the Gigabyte Transceiver, and then it is compensated by the mixed-mode clock manager in FPGAs. The proposed clock synchronization approach is evaluated with an FC communication system that has a serial rate of 12.5 Gbps, and the reported experimental results show that the proposed clock synchronization module can achieve a time difference lower than 1 ns., (© 2024 Author(s). Long distance accumulators are widely used in underwater electro-hydraulic control systems. However, as the working depth increases, the underwater umbilical cable becomes longer. The actual physical properties of the gas in the accumulator change. These factors affect the charging characteristics of the accumulator. To address the above issues, a simulation model of the charging of the long distance accumulator under real operating conditions is developed. Among them, the real properties of the gas inside the accumulator were calculated using the Redlich-Kwong-Soave method. The coefficient of friction within the umbilical cable is based on the Reynolds number and relative roughness. The simulation data were compared with the experimental results in the South China Sea to verify the accuracy of the simulation model. The effects of key factors on the charging characteristics of the long distance accumulators were also analyzed. The results show that the simulation results are in good agreement with the experimental results. The law of accumulator charging was analyzed: the greater the pressure of the gas source, the smaller the accumulator charging time; the greater the working water depth, the shorter the accumulator charging time. Single frequency fiber lasers (SFFLs) have seen increasing applications in state-of-the-art quantum technologies, which usually require precise and stable offset frequency locking (OFL). However, limited by the piezoelectric transducer bandwidth in SFFLs and the loop bandwidth of the OFL, the large-gap jumping between two locked offset frequencies will take an undesirable amount of time. In order to diminish that consuming time, we developed an agile offset frequency locking system based on a hybrid loop of a feed-forward path and a feedback path. In accordance with the experimental demonstration, we characterized the performances of the offset frequency locking system, as frequency-locking stability with an Allan deviation of 3.2 × 10 -14 at 1 s averaging time and jumping agility with a duration of 0.6 ms at 1.3 GHz frequency gap, which is a factor of 60 faster than that without the feed-forward path. This mechanism can find direct applications in existing quantum metrology experiments with SFFLs where high-speed frequency jumping or sweeping is needed.

Magnetically driven loading techniques based on high current pulsed power drivers are very important tools for researching material dynamic behaviors and high-pressure physics. Based on the technologies of a Marx generator energy storage and low impedance coaxial cable energy transmission, a compact high current pulsed power driver CQ-7 was developed and established at the Institute of Fluid Physics, China Academy of Engineering Physics, which can generate precisely shaped current waveforms for magnetically driven loading experiments. CQ-7 is composed of 256 two-stage Marx generators in parallel with low impedance, high voltage coaxial cables for current output. The 256 Marx generators are divided into 16 groups, and each separate group can be individually triggered to discharge and shape currents in sequence by a low jitter, high voltage pulse trigger with 16 output signals. The electrical parameters of CQ-7 are a capacitance of 20.48 µF, an inductance of 4.12 nH, and a resistance of 3.35 mΩ in a short circuit. When working at the charging voltage of ±40-±60 kV, CQ-7 can deliver a peak current from 5 to 7 MA to the short-circuit loads with a rising time of 400-700 ns at different discharging time sequences. Two different experiments were conducted to test the performance of CQ-7: magnetically driven high velocity flyer plates and solid liner implosion. The results show that CQ-7 can accelerate the aluminum flyer plate with a size of 12 × 8 × 1 mm 3 to more than 7.5 km/s and uniformly drive the aluminum liner with an inner diameter of 6.2 mm and a thickness of 0.4 mm to more than 9.5 km/s. Furthermore, these experiments indicate that CQ-7 is a robust platform for material dynamics and high-pressure physics.

A new apparatus simultaneously and rapidly measuring the sample radiation and the blackbody radiation by one detector without moving any experimental component is designed to measure the directional spectral emissivity of solid samples in a controlled environment. The effect of multiple reflections in the sample chamber on the measurement result is evaluated. The temperature distribution of the sample surface is measured by using a thermal imager. In order to validate the experimental apparatus, the directional spectral emissivity of silicon is measured in a nitrogen environment and that of iron is measured in vacuum, and the normal spectral emissivity of pure copper is measured during the oxidation process. Good agreement between the measured results and the reported data proves the reliability of the designed apparatus. The expanded uncertainty of the measurement system is estimated to be less than 5.3% when the emission angle is 86°.

Stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP) is an effective technique to transfer state coherently with the features of both high fidelity and robustness in the field of quantum information and quantum precise measurement. In this note, we present a simple method to generate arbitrary laser shapes for STIRAP by controlling the modulation depth of the electro-optic modulator (EOM) and the diffraction efficiency of the acoustic-optic modulator (AOM) simultaneously. The EOM and AOM are used to control the power ratio between the two Raman lasers (pumping laser and Stokes laser) and the total power, respectively. Compared with the traditional method by combining two Raman lasers separated in space, this method has the advantage of simple structure and insensitivity to the environment disturbance, which would degrade the relative phase noise between two Raman lasers.

Phase noise of Raman lasers is a major source of noise for a Raman-type cold atom interferometer, which is traditionally measured using the signal source analyzer. We report here an atom-based method to measure the phase noise performance between two Raman lasers. By analyzing and calibrating the system noise sources, we can characterize the contribution of phase noise from the total deviation of the relative atom population at the middle of the interference fringe. Knowing the transfer function specified by the operation sequence of the interferometer, we can obtain the transfer function and power spectrum density of the phase noise term. By varying the time sequences of the interferometer, we can measure the white phase noise floor and the phase noise performance over a large range of Fourier frequencies from 1 to 100 000 Hz with a minor difference of 1 dB compared with results from the traditional method using a signal analyzer, which proves the validity of the atom-based method. Compared with the traditional measurement method, the atom-based method can have higher accuracy and have the ability of self-calibrating.

Solenoids are frequently used for focusing low-energy beams. In this paper, we show how they can serve as multipurpose diagnostics tools to measure various beam parameters, including energy, emittance, the second moments of the transverse distribution, and the beam position and angle with respect to the solenoid's axis. The energy measurement is based on rotation of the plane of the transverse motion, as opposed to generating dispersion with a dipole. Measurement of the beam trajectory with respect to the solenoid axis is done by analyzing the beam orbit downstream of the solenoid while varying its current. The second moments are calculated by analyzing the beam image on a profile monitor while accounting for the beam rotation caused by the solenoid. We describe in detail the corresponding procedures and the experimental results of these measurements.

Light shift produced by the AC Stark effect is one of the major factors limiting the accuracy and long-term stability of a cold atom interferometer. The first order light shift can be canceled by fixing the power ratio of the Raman beams at a specified value. We report here a new method to stabilize the power ratio of the two Raman lasers with ∼100 kHz locking bandwidth, suppressing the effect of the first order light shift. We first mixed the two Raman lasers (at different optical frequencies) with a reference beam and then used two Schottky diode detectors to extract the corresponding beat note signals for each beam, which are much easier to be manipulated and processed as they are in the microwave band. The stability of the power ratio is improved by three orders of magnitude from 5.84 × 10 -3 to 3.51 × 10 -6 at 1 s averaging time and reaches 1.59 × 10 -7 at 10 000 s integrating time when the servo loop is engaged. This method can be used in other precise quantum measurement based on the stimulated Raman transition and can be applied to compact inertial sensors.

A repetitive electron beam driver based on 6-stage Linear Transformer Driver (LTD) cavities is presented. Each cavity consists of two Blumlein pulse forming networks (BPFNs) sharing a laser trigger switch. Voltage adding is obtained by means of Linear Transformer (LT) technology. The LTD cavity consists of two BPFNs connected in parallel, an LT with a ratio of 1:1, and a laser-triggered spark switch. The energy efficiency of a single LTD was investigated. The results show that the energy efficiency of an L-type BPFN and an LT was 94.3% and 92.8%, respectively. An electron beam driver consisting of 6 such cavities was developed with an output voltage of 740 kV, a current of 12.3 kA, and a power of 9.1 GW. The repetition frequency operation results show that the electron beam driver can operate stably for 20 s at 25 Hz with a jitter of approximately 1.7 ns.

In order to investigate the shear yield stress of magnetorheological (MR) fluid at different temperatures, shear gaps, and shear rates, a ring measurement system is designed based on the MR characteristics. The magnetic field and temperature field of the system are simulated and analyzed, which proves that the design of the measurement system is reasonable. On this basis, the measurement system is manufactured and experiments are carried out to verify its performance. The results show that the system can provide a uniform and strong enough magnetic field to make MR effects occur. Meanwhile, the temperature of the shear gap can reach 100 °C in 610 s, and it can increase up to 240 °C when heating continues, which can provide stable measurement conditions at different temperatures, especially at high temperatures. All the results of the experiments show that the measurement system meets the requirements of measuring the shear yield stress of MR fluid. To test the accuracy of the measurement system, repeated experiments are carried out as well. The shear yield stress by the system is almost the same as that provided by the manufacturer, showing excellent measuring precision. The repeatability error of the measurement system is less than 4.02%, indicating that the measurement system is of high accuracy.
