A rectangular cross‐section discharge tube has been used to design and make a high‐powered He–Ne laser. The output power of this kind of He–Ne laser can be raised by increasing the transverse size of the discharge tube. A He–Ne laser tube of 20×4.5 mm2 rectangular cross section and 1.7 m discharge length can give an output power of above 200 mW at 0.6328 μm. In this article, the design principle and the preliminary experimental results of this kind of He–Ne laser are briefly described and discussed.
