Objective: to identify and analyze evidence from studies about the importance of civilian nursing organizations., Method: an integrative literature review, for which searches were conducted in the databases LILACS, PubMed/MEDLINE, SciELO, BDENF, and Scopus., Results: sixteen articles published between the years 2004-2013 were selected, 68.75% of which were sourced from Brazilian journals and 31.25% from American journals., Conclusion: civilian nursing organizations are important and necessary, because they have collaborated decisively in nursing struggles in favor of the working class and society in general, and these contributions influence different axes of professional performance.

Social historical study that has as object news related to the Assessment of the Resources and Needs of Nursing in Brazil published in the Revista Brasileira de Enfermagem between 1955 and 1958. The primary source is constituted of copies of Revista Brasileira de Enfermagem published within the selected period of the study. The secondary sources are constituted of books, papers, dissertations and thesis related to the Nursing history. The data analysis was supported by the secondary sources and the thought of the sociologist Pierre Bourdieu. The results evidenced that Revista Brasileira de Enfermagem, in addition to making possible the dissemination of news about the Assessment provided visibility to it and, at last, had the symbolic effect of giving power and prestige to the Brazilian Nursing.

Social-historical study conducted to examine the contribution of the American Nurses of Project HOPE to the configuration of the professional identity of the first trained nurses in Alagoas, in the period of 1973-1977. The theoretical framework was the "Civilizing Process" of Norbert Elias. Primary sources were official documents and personal files of 13 respondents by oral history; the secondary sources were authors of the History of Brazil/Alagoas. Data analysis showed that the configuration of the professional identity of the first trained nurses in Alagoas was a civilizing process, with all the nuances that make up the power relations. There was a significant contribution of American Nursing. However the movement of resistance to this domination was very strong, resulting in a Course that could take advantage of technological advancement and prestige brought by the United States, to build a unique Nursing from the social fabric embroidery at this meeting with so many different cultures.

This is a historical-social study, which aimed to analyze and argue the on the importance of the Brazilian Nursing Memory Centre for preservation and publicity of the professional memory. As data sources it was used the documentary Associação Brasileira de Enfermagem: 1926-1976, and the Project of Implantation and the Technical Report of the Memory Centre's Documentary and Phonic Collection, both filed in the referred Centre. The data, collected in June 2013, were subjected to external and intern criticism, aiming to its validation. The analysis occurred concurrently with data collection and was made based on knowledge about the topic, supported by Bourdieu's concept of habitus. It was observed that, since 1926, the directions of the Brazilian Nursing Association contributed for the Memory Centre implantation, by means of the importance attributed to the preservation of the memory. It was concluded that the memory enshrined in the collection constitutes material and symbolic goods for the Brazilian nursing to be transmitted through the historiography derived from it.

This study aimed to analyze the joint influence of background variables (age, gender, and income), weakness and sleep disorders on cognition in elderly community residents. This is an excerpt from the multicenter project Frailty in Elderly Brazilians (FIBER). We evaluated 878 patients, using socio demographic questionnaire, questions about sleep disorders (Nottingham Health Profile); issues nap (Minnesota Leisure Activity Questionnaire) and MMSE (cognitive screening). The Mann Whitney and Kruskal Wallis test and regression analysis were used univariate and multivariate data analysis, with a significance level of 5% (p <0.05). The results showed that elderly patients with lower MMSE scores were those with lower family income, female and older. Health professionals can develop preventive actions in relation to cognition, thus maintaining the autonomy and independence in daily activities of the elderly.

This is a historical and social study, which aimed to describe the main characteristics of the Vargas and Franco dictatorships, and to analyze the implications of these to the institutionalization of nursing in Brazil and Spain. As fonts, it was used written documents located in the historical Brazilian and Spanish archives, in addition to the literature on the subject. Data analysis, supported by concepts of Pierre Bourdieu's World Social Theory, showed that, in Brazil and Spain, in referring to the social division of labor, the meeting point between Church and the State was the seclusion of women in private space. It is concluded that the feminine qualities were capitalized by the nurses to legitimize their actions in public space, even to reproduce in that space, consented to by the State and Church, occupations appropriate to femininity.

Historic-social study whose object was the intellectual production of nurses and students about pediatric nursing in the journal Annaes de Enfermagem, in the period 1932-1941. The primary source refers to the issues of the journal Annaes de Enfermagem considering the established time limits for the study, as well as reports and correspondences. The secondary sources are constituted by books, articles, dissertations and thesis on the Brazilian history of nursing. On data analysis it was used the thought of the French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu. The results show that the journal Annaes de Enfermagem published important issues of nursing care to the child and contributed to the visibility of Brazilian nurses among the scientific community.

The present text had a purpose of reflect about the connections between postgraduation an nursing research courses in Brazil. The origins used were magazines, with distinction for Revista Brasileira de Enfermagem and Escola Anna Nery-Revista de Enfermagem, annals of conferences, seminaries and research forums, like the oral deposition of the teacher Emerita EEAN/UFRJ, the doctor Vilma de Carvalho. Note, in this analysis, that the courses of post graduation gave effective impulse at scientific production for the nursing, permitting the advance in a critic valuation of the professional practice.

This is a historical-social research project. The main objective is to present the participation of the Anna Nery Nursing School in the medical assistance positions in the state of Sao Paulo during the Constitutionalist Revolution of 1932. The objective of the present investigation is to describe how the teachers and students of the Anna Nery Nursing School participated in the different operation fronts during this war and to analyse the implications of the performance of nurses and students of this School. Our main documental resource were written and photographical documents that belong to the Centre of Documentation of the EEA/UFRJ. The secondary source were articles and books that about the history of Brazil and Brazilian nursing. This investigation evidenced the importance of the nurse's work during times of crisis and it also made possible for the EEAN to earn symbolic profits.

This is a historical study that analyses the formation process of the professional habitus of Rachel Haddock Lobo through the reconstruction of her biography. It also analyses her contribution as 1st editor in chief of Revista Annaes de Enfermagem (Brazilian Journal of Nursing), in 1932, which is currently called Revista Brasileira de Enfermagem. The preferential primary sources of this study included written documents and the oral testimony of one of Rachel Haddock Lobo's family members. Both sources were obtained from Centro de Documentação da Escola de Enfermagem Ana Nery (Documentation Center of Ana Neri School of Nursing). Data were analyzed through the concepts of habitus and social configuration by Norbert Elias. The analysis showed that Rachel Haddock Lobo gave expressive contribution to the creation process of the journal referred, which, on its turn, had an strategic importance on the formation of the identity of the Brazilian nursing professionals at that time.
