This is a description of the semantics of the Bribri words called “positionals”, which provide additional information about the posture or position of nominal referents. After an outline of the basic morphosyntactic features of these elements, the paper gives numerous examples of their most prototypical uses and the several semantic extensions they present, and explains the cognitive processes involved in each case.
