Objective: To describe the process of cross-cultural adaptation for the use in Brazil of the everyday discrimination scale (EDS) and the heightened vigilance scale (HVS) applied in the Longitudinal Study of Adult Health (ELSA-Brasil)., Methods: Conceptual, item and semantic equivalence analyses were conducted by a group of four epidemiologists; evaluation of measurement equivalence (factorial analysis of configural, metric and scalar structures, according to sociodemographic characteristics) and reliability. A total of 11,987 participants responded to the discrimination scale, and a subsample of 260 people participated in the test-retest study. In the case of HVS, 8,916 people responded, while 149 individuals did so in the test-retest study., Results: The scales presented conceptual, item and semantic equivalence pertinent in the Brazilian context, in addition to adequate correspondence of referential/denotative meaning of terms and also of the general/connotative of the items. The confirmatory factor analysis of EDS revealed a unidimensional structure, with residual correlations between two pairs of items, presenting configural and metric invariance among the four subgroups evaluated. Scalar invariance was identified according to sex and age group, but it was not observed for race/color and education. Heightened vigilance showed low loads and high residuals, with inadequate adjustment indicators. For the items of the discrimination scale the weighted kappa coefficient (Kp) ranged from 0.44 to 0.78, and the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) was 0.87. For HVS items, the Kp ranged from 0.47 to 0.59 and the ICC was 0.83., Conclusions: Although there are correlated items, it was concluded that the EDS is a promising scale to evaluate experiences of perceived discrimination in Brazilian daily life. However, the heightened vigilance scale did not present equivalence of measurement in the current format.

Objective: To investigate the validity and test-retest reliability of the Brazilian version of the Dutch questionnaire "Verwachtingen over werken"., Methods: We analyzed data from a longitudinal study conducted in the city of São Paulo, Brazil, from 2014 to 2016. Participants were 411 workers on sick leave for more than 15 days due to mental disorders. A subsample of 126 participants responded the questionnaire a second time, seven to 21 days later. Factorial and concurrent validities and the test-retest reliability were analyzed., Results: Most participants were female (71.5%), the average age was 36.7 years; 83.1% had attended 12 or more years of formal schooling; the average length of sick leave was 84 days. The average self-efficacy score tended to be below the scale midpoint. The construct had a two-dimensional structure and the concurrent validity confirmed the original construct. For all items, the test-retest reliability adjusted for prevalence ranged from good (0.70) to almost perfect (0.83)., Conclusions: While the two-dimensional structure diverges from the original, other parameters were adequate. Application of the Return-to-work self-efficacy questionnaire to Brazilian workers might contribute to the planning of return-to-work process. Additional studies are needed to complement the analysis of the use of this instrument in Brazil.

Objective: The objective of this study is to investigate the adherence and the factors that influence adherence to physical activity in adults with dyslipidemia, hypertension, or diabetes., Methods: The analyses were based on data collected at the baseline of the 14,521 participants from the study ELSA-Brasil aged between 35 and 74 years. The level of leisure time physical activity was determined using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire. Logistic regression analyses were performed to examine the influence of the demographic data, socioeconomic conditions, perceived health status, and access to exercise facilities in the neighborhood on adherence to physical activity., Results: Men with hypertension and dyslipidemia were more active than women. The results show that 17.8%, 15.1%, and 13.9% of the subjects who reported dyslipidemia, hypertension, and diabetes, respectively, adhere to the physical activity recommendations. The factors positively associated with adherence were higher education and income. Older individuals who reported poor perceived health, were overweight and obese, regularly smoked, and had fewer opportunities to exercise in the neighborhood presented lower adherence., Conclusions: The number of adults with dyslipidemia, hypertension, and diabetes who adhere to the physical activity recommendations is very low. Higher education and income are positively associated with adherence, while age, excess body weight, negative perceived health, regular smoking, and lack of opportunity to exercise in the neighborhood were considered barriers to physical activity.

On-shift napping can benefit night workers regarding sleep loss, synchronization of circadian rhythms, and alertness. However, few studies on napping can be found in the literature focused on possible health benefits. This cross-sectional study has investigated the role of on-shift napping on the association between night work and BMI in 409 night-shift nursing professionals. The number of working nights and the years of exposure to night work were significantly associated with increased BMI levels among non-nappers, but not among nappers. Results suggest a benefit of napping for weight gain, thus subsidizing occupational health policies on the regulation of on-shift napping among nursing workers.

Objective: To compare two methodological approaches: the multinomial model and the zero-inflated gamma model, evaluating the factors associated with the practice and amount of time spent on leisure time physical activity., Methods: Data collected from 14,823 baseline participants in the Longitudinal Study of Adult Health (ELSA-Brasil - Estudo Longitudinal de Saúde do Adulto ) have been analysed. Regular leisure time physical activity has been measured using the leisure time physical activity module of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire. The explanatory variables considered were gender, age, education level, and annual per capita family income., Results: The main advantage of the zero-inflated gamma model over the multinomial model is that it estimates mean time (minutes per week) spent on leisure time physical activity. For example, on average, men spent 28 minutes/week longer on leisure time physical activity than women did. The most sedentary groups were young women with low education level and income., Conclusions: The zero-inflated gamma model, which is rarely used in epidemiological studies, can give more appropriate answers in several situations. In our case, we have obtained important information on the main determinants of the duration of leisure time physical activity. This information can help guide efforts towards the most vulnerable groups since physical inactivity is associated with different diseases and even premature death.

Objective: To assess the association between weekly working hours and self-rated health of nurses in public hospitals in Rio de Janeiro, State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil., Methods: A total of 3,229 nurses (82.7% of the eligible group) participated in this cross-sectional study, carried out between April 2010 and December 2011. The collection instrument consisted of a self-administered multidimensional questionnaire. The weekly working hours were calculated from a recall of the daily hours worked over seven consecutive days; this variable was categorized according to tertiles of distribution for men and women. The outcome of interest, self-rated health, was categorized into three levels: good (very good and good), regular, and poor (poor and very poor). The statistical analysis of the data included bivariate and multivariate analyses, having as reference group those with short working hours (first tertile). All the analyses were stratified by gender and elaborated using the program SPSS., Results: Among women, the group corresponding to the longest working week (more than 60.5 hours per week) were more likely to report regular self-rated health, compared with those with shorter working hours, after adjusting for confounding factors (OR = 1.30; 95%CI 1.02-1.67). Among men, those with average working hours (49.5-70.5 hours per week) were more than twice as likely to rate their health as regular (OR = 2.17; 95%CI 1.08-4.35) compared to those with shorter working hours (up to 49.5 hours). There was no significant association between long working hours and poor self-rated health., Conclusions: The results point to the urgent need to promote interventions in the organization of work and appreciation of the nursing profession, in order to reduce the number of multiple jobs and thus contribute to mitigate potential effects on the health of workers and the quality of care in hospitals., Objetivo: Avaliar a associação entre horas de trabalho semanais e autoavaliação de saúde de enfermeiros em hospitais públicos do Rio de Janeiro, RJ, Brasil., Métodos: Um total de 3.229 enfermeiros (82,7% do grupo de elegíveis) participou deste estudo transversal, realizado entre abril de 2010 e dezembro de 2011. O instrumento de coleta consistiu em um questionário multidimensional autopreenchido. As horas de trabalho semanais foram calculadas a partir de um recordatório das horas diárias de trabalho ao longo de sete dias consecutivos; esta variável foi categorizada de acordo com tercis da distribuição para homens e mulheres. O desfecho de interesse, auto-avaliação de saúde, foi categorizado em três níveis: bom (muito bom e bom), regular e ruim (ruim e muito ruim). A análise estatística dos dados incluiu análises bivaridas e multivariadas, tendo como grupo de referência aqueles com jornadas curtas de trabalho (primeiro tercil). Todas as análises foram estratificadas por sexo e elaboradas no programa SPSS., Resultados: Entre as mulheres, o grupo correspondente à semana de trabalho mais longa (mais de 60,5 horas por semana) tinha maior probabilidade de relatar autoavaliação de saúde como regular, em comparação com aqueles com jornada curta, após o ajuste para fatores de confusão (OR = 1,30; IC95% 1,02-1,67). Entre os homens, aqueles com jornada média (49,5-70,5 horas por semana) tiveram mais que o dobro da probabilidade de avaliar sua saúde como regular (OR = 2,17; IC95% 1,08-4,35) em comparação com aqueles com a semana de trabalho mais curta (até 49,5 horas). Não houve associação significativa entre longas horas de trabalho e autoavaliação de saúde ruim., Conclusões: Os resultados apresentados apontam para a urgência em promover intervenções na organização do trabalho e valorização da profissão de enfermagem, de modo a reduzir o múltiplo vínculo e assim contribuir para mitigar possíveis efeitos sobre a saúde dos trabalhadores e a qualidade do atendimento nos hospitais.

Objective: To describe the translation and early stages of cross-cultural adaptation of the questionnaire Verwachtingen over werken (or "Return-to-work self-efficacy") for workers in sick leave due to mental disorders, from the original in Dutch to the Brazilian Portuguese language., Methods: A panel gathering experts was formed to determine the questionnaire conceptual and item equivalence. For semantic equivalence, the Dutch-Portuguese Brazilian translations were consolidated and consensus meetings were held to structure versions of the instrument. Each version was back-translated from Brazilian Portuguese to Dutch and evaluated by one of the authors of the original version. The final version was submitted to two pre-tests for operational equivalence., Results: The original questionnaire in Dutch was translated twice to Brazilian Portuguese. During the process, four consensus meetings of the experts' panel were performed to create the versions. Each version was back-translated to Dutch. One of the authors of the original questionnaire performed an evaluation on the first three versions until the definition of the final one, which was titled Expectativas sobre o trabalho (Expectations about work). Pre-tests' participants did not reported problems to fill the questionnaire., Conclusions: Results indicate that the Brazilian Portuguese cross-culturally adapted version maintains the original meaning of the questionnaire, while including characteristics peculiar to the Brazilian reality. Measurement and functional equivalence of this version must still be evaluated before its application can be recommended for workers who have been absent from work due to mental disorders.

In this study, we evaluated the psychometric properties of the items to measure the work-family conflict and the time use for personal care and leisure, included in the baseline questionnaire of the Longitudinal Study of Adult Health (ELSA-Brazil). We evaluated temporal stability (7-14 days) using kappa statistic and the validity of the construct by the correlation of Kendall's tau with other variables. Test-retest stability was discreet to moderate and the correlations were compatible with the underlying theory. Future studies in the context of ELSA-Brazil and in other populations will complement the assessment of its relevance. RESUMO Neste estudo, avaliamos as propriedades psicométricas dos itens para mensurar o conflito trabalho-família e o uso do tempo para cuidado pessoal e lazer, incluídos no questionário da linha de base do Estudo Longitudinal de Saúde do Adulto (ELSA-Brasil). Foram avaliadas a estabilidade temporal (7-14 dias) utilizando estatística kappa e a validade do construto pela correlação tau de Kendall com outras variáveis. A estabilidade teste-reteste foi discreta a moderada e as correlações, compatíveis com a teoria subjacente. Estudos futuros no contexto do ELSA-Brasil e em outras populações complementarão a avaliação da sua pertinência.

Objective: To describe the steps in the transcultural adaptation of the scale in the Effort-reward imbalance model to household and family work to the Brazilian context., Methods: We performed the translation, back-translation, and initial psychometric evaluation of the questionnaire that comprised three dimensions: (i) effort (eight items, emphasizing quantitative workload), (ii) reward (11 items that seek to capture the intrinsic value of family and household work, societal esteem, recognition from the spouse/partner, and affection from the children), and (iii) overcommitment (four items related to intrinsic effort). The scale was included in a sectional study conducted with 1,045 nursing workers. A subsample of 222 subjects answered the questionnaire for a second time, seven to 15 days thereafter. The data were collected between October 2012 and May 2013. The internal consistency of the scale was evaluated using Cronbach's alpha and test-retest reliability analysis, square weighted kappa, prevalence and bias adjusted Kappa, and intraclass correlation coefficient., Results: Prevalence and bias-adjusted Kappa (ka) of the scale dimensions ranged from 0.80-0.83 for overcommitment, 0.78-0.90 for effort, and 0.76-0.93 for reward. In most dimensions, the values of minimum and maximum scores, average, standard deviation, and Cronbach's alpha were similar in test and retest scores. Only on societal esteem subdimension (reward) was there little variation in standard deviation (test score of 2.24 and retest score of 3.36) and in Cronbach's alpha coefficient (test score of 0.38 and retest score of 0.59)., Conclusions: The Brazilian version of the scale was found to have proper reliability indices regarding time stability, which suggests adapting it to be used in population with characteristics that are similar to the one in this study., Objetivo: Descrever as etapas da adaptação transcultural da escala do Effort-reward imbalance model to household and family work para o contexto brasileiro., Métodos: Efetuou-se a tradução, retrotradução e avaliação psicométrica inicial do instrumento composto por três dimensões: (i) esforço (oito itens, enfatizando a carga quantitativa de trabalho), (ii) recompensa (11 itens que buscam captar o valor intrínseco da família e do trabalho doméstico, a estima social, o reconhecimento do cônjuge ou companheiro e a afeição dos filhos) e (iii) o excesso de comprometimento (quatro itens relacionados ao esforço intrínseco). A escala foi incluída em um estudo seccional aplicado em 1.045 trabalhadoras de enfermagem. Uma subamostra de 222 participantes respondeu ao questionário pela segunda vez, com intervalo de sete a 15 dias. Os dados foram coletados entre outubro de 2012 e maio de 2013. A consistência interna da escala foi avaliada pelo coeficiente de alpha de Cronbach e a confiabilidade teste-reteste, pelo índice kappa ponderado quadrático, pelo kappa ajustado pela prevalência e pelo coeficiente de correlação intraclasse., Resultados: A confiabilidade ajustada pela prevalência (ka) das dimensões da escala variou de 0,80-0,83 para o excesso de comprometimento, 0,78-0,90 para o esforço e 0,76-0,93 para a recompensa. Na maioria das dimensões, os valores do escore mínimo e máximo, média, desvio-padrão e alpha de Cronbach no teste e no reteste foram semelhantes. Somente na subdimensão estima social (recompensa) houve pequena variação no desvio padrão (2,24 no teste e 3,36 no reteste) e no coeficiente de alpha de Cronbach (0,38 no teste e 0,59 no reteste)., Conclusões: A versão brasileira da escala apresentou índices adequados de fidedignidade quanto à estabilidade temporal, o que sugere a adequação da escala para uso em populações com características semelhantes à do estudo.

Objective: To identify gender differences in social support dimensions' effect on adults' leisure-time physical activity maintenance, type, and time., Methods: Longitudinal study of 1,278 non-faculty public employees at a university in Rio de Janeiro, RJ, Southeastern Brazil. Physical activity was evaluated using a dichotomous question with a two-week reference period, and further questions concerning leisure-time physical activity type (individual or group) and time spent on the activity. Social support was measured with the Medical Outcomes Study Social Support Scale. For the analysis, logistic regression models were adjusted separately by gender., Results: A multinomial logistic regression showed an association between material support and individual activities among women (OR = 2.76; 95%CI 1.2;6.5). Affective support was associated with time spent on leisure-time physical activity only among men (OR = 1.80; 95%CI 1.1;3.2)., Conclusions: All dimensions of social support that were examined influenced either the type of, or the time spent on, leisure-time physical activity. In some social support dimensions, the associations detected varied by gender. Future studies should attempt to elucidate the mechanisms involved in these gender differences.

The article describes assessments and measurements performed in the Brazilian Longitudinal Study for Adult Health (ELSA-Brasil). Some assessments including anthropometric assessment, casual blood pressure measurement, and ankle-brachial index have an established clinical application while others including pulse wave velocity, heart rate variability, and carotid intima-media thickness have no established application and do not have reference values for healthy Brazilian population but may be important predictors of cardiovascular outcomes. Blood pressure measurement following postural change maneuver was included in the ELSA-Brasil because it has not been much tested in epidemiological studies. Innovative approaches were developed for assessing the ankle-brachial index using an automatic device instead of the mercury column to measure blood pressure and for assessing the anterior-posterior diameter of the right lobe of the liver by ultrasound for quantitative assessment of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. All ELSA-Brasil subjects were younger (35 years or more) than those included in other cohorts studying subclinical atherosclerosis. The inclusion of younger individuals and a variety of assessments make the ELSA-Brasil a relevant epidemiology study nationwide and worldwide.

Objective: To describe the process involved in adapting scales for measuring neighborhood characteristics to Brazilian Portuguese., Methods: The dimensions addressed were social cohesion, environment suitable for physical activity, availability of healthy foods, safety, perceived violence and victimization. The adaptation process involved assessment of equivalence between the original scales and the Portuguese versions. The test-retest reliability was assessed in a subsample of 261 participants from the Brazilian Longitudinal Study for Adult Health (ELSA-Brasil), who answered the same questionnaire on two different occasions, separated by an interval of 7 to 14 days., Results: The aspects of equivalence assessed were shown to be adequate. The intraclass correlation coefficient ranged from 0.83 (95%CI 0.78;0.87) for Social Cohesion to 0.90 (95%CI 0.87;0.92) for Walking Environment. The scales showed internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha) ranging from 0.60 to 0.84., Conclusions: The measurements on self-reported neighborhood characteristics had very good reproducibility and good internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha). The results suggest that these scales can be used in studies involving Brazilian populations with characteristics similar to those of ELSA-Brasil.

The ELSA-Brasil (Estudo Longitudinal de Saúde do Adulto - Brazilian Longitudinal Study for Adult Health) is a cohort study composed of 15,105 adults followed up in order to assess the development of chronic diseases, especially diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Its size, multicenter nature and the diversity of measurements required effective and efficient mechanisms of quality assurance and control. The main quality assurance activities (those developed before data collection) were: careful selection of research instruments, centralized training and certification, pretesting and pilot studies, and preparation of operation manuals for the procedures. Quality control activities (developed during data collection and processing) were performed more intensively at the beginning, when routines had not been established yet. The main quality control activities were: periodic observation of technicians, test-retest studies, data monitoring, network of supervisors, and cross visits. Data that estimate the reliability of the obtained information attest that the quality goals have been achieved.

The ELSA-Brasil (Estudo Longitudinal de Saúde do Adulto - Brazilian Longitudinal Study for Adult Health) is a prospective cohort study with extensive assessments throughout time. This article describes the routine of clinical tests and interviews performed with participants and the structuring of the Research Center physical space and teams. The ELSA-Brasil assumes that participants will be present at the Research Center to have the tests and interviews performed, according to standard protocols developed by this study. Considering the multiplicity of activities involved, each with specific needs for standardization, several predetermined orders of clinical tests and interviews were created. This ensured a high standard of quality in data collection without harm to participants' comfort. Each participant was previously assigned to a specific sequence of clinical tests and interviews with a predefined arrival time, mean length of stay of five to six hours and departure time.

Objective: To estimate the test-retest reliability of items of the Resource Generator scale for assessing social capital in the Brazilian Longitudinal Study for Adult Health (ELSA-Brasil)., Methods: The social capital was applied in a subsample of 281 participants from six ELSA investigation centers, on two occasions with an interval of seven to 14 days. The instrument consists of 31 items that represent concrete situations to evaluate the access to different types of resources. In addition, it evaluates the strength of ties (family, friends or acquaintances) for the available resources. Statistical analyses were performed through use of the kappa statistic (k) and prevalence-adjusted kappa (ka)., Results: A high frequency was found for social resources (above 50%). Regarding the presence or absence of resources, prevalence-adjusted reliability (ka) varied from 0.54 to 0.97. With regard to the source for the resource, the reliability estimates ranged from ka = 0.45 ("someone who has good contacts with the media") to ka = 0.86 ("someone who completed secondary education")., Conclusions: The scale presented adequate levels of reliability, which varied according to the type of resource.

Objective: To analyze factors associated with self-reported sickness absenteeism among nursing workers., Methods: Cross-sectional study with 1,509 workers from three public hospitals in the city of Rio de Janeiro (Southeastern Brazil) in 2006. Absenteeism was classified in three levels: no day, a few days (1-9 days) and many days (> 10 days), based on the answer to a question of the work ability index questionnaire. The logistic regression analysis considered a conceptual model based on distal (socioeconomic status), intermediate I (occupational characteristics), intermediate II (lifestyle characteristics), and proximal (diseases and health conditions) determinants., Results: The frequencies of sickness absenteeism were 20.3% and 16.6% for a few days and many days, respectively. Those who reported more than one job, musculoskeletal diseases and rated their health as poor or regular had higher odds of absenteeism. Compared to nurses, nursing assistants were less likely to mention a few days, and technicians were more likely to have many days of absence. Higher odds of mentioning many days of absence were observed among public servants, compared to contract workers (OR = 3.12; 95%CI 1.86;5.22), and among married (OR = 1.73; 95%CI 1.14;2.63) and separated, divorced and widowed individuals (OR = 2.06, 95%CI 1.27;3.35), compared to singles., Conclusions: Different variables were associated with the two forms of absenteeism, which suggests its multiple and complex determination related to factors from different levels that cannot be exclusively explained by health problems.

Objective: To identify combinations of two models of psychosocial stress at work among nursing teams and their associations with self-rated health., Methods: This was a cross-sectional study among workers at three public hospitals in the municipality of Rio de Janeiro, Southeastern Brazil (N = 1307). In 2006, a multidimensional questionnaire including two scales for measuring stress at work (demand-control and effort-reward imbalance models) was administered. Partial and complete (including social support at work) demand-control models were considered, along with partial and complete (including excessive commitment to work) effort-reward models. Multiple logistic regression models were used to estimate adjusted odds ratios and their respective 95% confidence intervals., Results: The dimensions of both models were independently associated with self-rated health, with odds ratios between 1.70 and 3.37. The partial demand-control model was less associated with health (OR = 1.79; 95%CI 1.26;2.53) than was the partial effort-reward imbalance model (OR = 2.27; 95%CI 1.57;3.30). Incorporation of social support and excessive commitment to work increased the strength of the demand-control and effort-reward imbalance models, respectively. Increased strength of association was observed when the two partial models were combined., Conclusions: The results indicate that the effort-reward imbalance model performed better for this specific group and for the outcome evaluated, and that there was an advantage in using complete models or combinations of partial models.

Objective: To estimate HIV prevalence and identify high-risk sexual behavior for infection in pregnant women who were given prenatal assistance., Methods: Cross-sectional study based on attendance records of 8,002 pregnant women (25% of all municipalities) who lived in 27 municipalities in Southern Brazil in 2003 and had anti-HIV tests done in a testing and counseling center that performed prenatal assistance. Sociodemographic and behavioral data were gathered, as well as syphilis and HIV test results, during the individual counseling sessions registered in the data bank of the Sistema de Informações dos Centros de Testagem e Aconselhamento (Information System on Testing and Counseling Centers). Women who sought the centers for confirmation of previous serology or were referred to this service due to the presence of AIDS symptoms were excluded from the data base., Results: A total of 0.5% of all the pregnant women analyzed (CI 95%=0.3;0.6) were HIV positive. The only variable associated with HIV seropositivity was schooling. The majority of them were basically exposed through unprotected sexual intercourse with the only partner they had a steady relationship with. Younger pregnant women who were single, unemployed and had lower level of education constituted the group with highest exposure., Conclusions: The Sistema de Informações dos Centros de Testagem e Aconselhamento turned out to be useful for the epidemiological surveillance of HIV infection and high-risk behavior among pregnant women and could also be useful as regards other populations.

Objectives: To evaluate the knowledge, attitudes, and practice regarding the Papanicolaou test in an Argentinean community., Methods: Two hundred women were interviewed at their homes in Puerto Leoni, Misiones, Argentina. Women were selected by simple random sampling. Answers were described in terms of knowledge, attitudes, and practice, ant their respective adequacies with respect to the Papanicolaou test, as previously defined. Adequacy was compared between the categories of the control variables by chi2 test with a 5% significance level., Results: Knowledge and practice of the Papanicolaou test were adequate in 49.5% and 30.5% of subjects, respectively, although the attitude towards the test was considered adequate in 80.5% of subjects. Another important finding was that women reported as the main reason for not undergoing the test the lack of a request by a physician or healthcare professional., Conclusions: Our results show a need for increasing the information provided to the public, especially by healthcare services and professionals, thus generating knowledge among the population of the advantages and benefits of Papanicolaou testing.

Objective: To evaluate test-retest reliability of social network-related information of the" Pr -Sa de" study., Methods: A test-retest reliability study was conducted using a multidimensional questionnaire applied to a cohort of university employees. The same questionnaire was filled out twice by 192 non-permanent employees with two weeks apart. Agreement was estimated using kappa statistics (categorical variables), weighted kappa statistics, log-linear models (ordinal variables), and intraclass correlation coefficient (discrete variables)., Results: Estimates of reliability were higher than 0.70 for most variables. Stratified analyses revealed no consistently varying patterns of reliability according to gender, age or schooling strata. Log-linear modelling showed that, for the study ordinal variables, the model of best fit was "diagonal agreement plus linear by linear association"., Conclusions: The high level of reliability estimated in this study suggests that the process of measurement of social network-related aspects was adequate. Validation studies, which are currently being conducted, will complete the quality assessment of this information.

Objective: To describe the prevalence of cigarette smoking and its association with other risk factors for chronic diseases among active workers of communication and data processing centers of a Bank., Methods: Cross-sectional study in a simple random sample of 647 active workers of the bank. The data were collected in the work environment, through self-administered questionnaires., Results: The prevalence of cigarette smoking was 29.5% (95% Confidence Interval (CI): 27.5%-31.5%), 31.1% (95% CI: 26.2%-35.8%) among men and 27.8% (95% CI: 22.6%-32.9%) among women. On average, males started smoking at the age of 17.6 years and women at the age of 19.4. High prevalence of heavy smokers was observed among men and women (53% and 42%, respectively, smoked more than 20 cigarettes per day). Smokers were older, more likely to be divorced, separated and widowed, to have high blood pressure, to drink alcoholic beverages more often, and to exercise less often than to non-smokers. Those who gave up smoking were older, drank more alcoholic beverages, and were more often overweight., Conclusion: The considerable frequency of smoking and other risk factors for chronic diseases among those workers may be an indication of the need for new strategies for health interventions. Opportunities for preventive actions, which are more effective and less costly, may have been lost.
