The study, an assessment of the evolution, the concept and the dimensions of local development was made, based on a multidimensional approach. It leaves a conceptual theoretical base linked to the contextualization that local development has had in Ecuador. The objective is to analyze the evolution of the contextualization of local development and its effect on the country. The review and analysis of the documentary sources allowed us to summarize the fundamental bases that describe and justify the concept and evolution of local development. The result indicates the feasibility of a group of strategies to guide actors and professionals about the actions to follow to give sustainability to local development projects. The conclusion shows the need to integrate the dimensions of local development in an environment where change is constant and requires knowledge to achieve sustainable local development.
