The epitaph of his gravestone on the Saint Helen cemetery of Strasbourg indicates the precise dates of beginning (21 August 1816) and tragic end (19 August 1856) of the eventfull but short live of the renowned chemist Charles Gerhardt. Accompagned by a Foundation, unfortunately disappeared during the last war, a bronze effigy was dedicated in 1921 to his memory in the Chemistry Institute. As regards the house where he was born, it bears a commemorative plate fastebed 1965 and restored 2006.

Antoine Auguste Deriard (1796-1873), was a pharmacist having a pharmacy, place des jacobins in Lyon then a store of raw materials for pharmacy. He gathered more than 3000 biographical notes on VIP from Lyon, was a famous numismat and collector of rare books. His son Louis (1825-1891) also a great collector of coins, medals and autographs ran its drugstore rue Dubois then rue Tupin in Lyon from 1854 to 181. Its sales figures with the well known Guilliermond pharmacy was between 400-1200 F a year (between 1858-1860). A. A. and L. Deriard struck each a personnal token (cupper, 32 mm diameter) whose description is given.

The author makes his point based on the medals either published or known to exist, to date, which have been attributed to the winners of competitions organized by certain pharmaceutical or medical institutions ("rivalry prizes") as well as by the schools, and the faculties, of medicine and pharmacy.

Three deans of the former Faculty of Medicine of Paris had tokens minted which referred to apothecaries: E.-F. Geoffroy, master apothecary of Paris before becoming a doctor of medicine; H.-T. Baron, senior, who succeeded in publishing the Paris Pharmacopoeia of 1732; P.-J.-B. Chomel, who cultivated "everyday plants", the object of his work, on land on the rue de l'Arbalète close by the "Jardin des Apothicaires". The author explains and reproduces the tokens.

The founding of the Schools of Pharmacy was celebrated in the Year XII by the issuing of fifty silver medals engraved by Brenet and intended for these schools. Only two of them have since been located. But, the "Brenet medals" have also served as prizes in competitions in the School of Pharmacy of Paris since the Year XII and for the Pharmaceutical Society. The autor is in possession of one, also bestowed in the Year XII, but for a "Second Prize in Botany" in Rouen, a city which was at that time without an official teaching institution in medicine or pharmacy. Its recipient was probably a medical student taking courses organized in the Hotel-Dieu of Rouen.

A token from the Municipal Series in Paris (Paris, Bibliothèque Nationale, Cabinet des Médailles) discovered by C. Aurensan bears on the obverse the arms of Paris and on the reverse the symbol of the three kingdoms in nature with its legend. This reverse is identical to those tokens made for Parisian apothecaries in 1628, 1629 and 1632. Unfortunately the date which it bears is poorly engraved and one cannot determine whether it reads 1619 or 1629. Several arguments militate in favor of 1619.

The author describes two medals from the "Société de Pharmacie de Paris", proving that the medal engraved by Brenet was also used as an award by the Société at the beginning of the 19th century. It also describes for the first time the use of a medal with the effigy of Lavoisier engraved by Caqué as a thesis award from 1871 to at least 1914.
