Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) with many unique advantages have drawn wide attention in the field of catalysis. However, the poor structural stability of MOFs limits its application. Heat treatment for MOFs can enhance its electrical conductivity and structural stability, which helps to improve the catalytic performance. Ni nanoparticles supported on MIL-53(Al) were synthesized through different heat treatment temperature. Catalysts with uniform distribution of active nickel and rich mesoporous structure were obtained by adjusting the heat treatment temperature to 500 °C. Highly efficient removal of Hg(ii) has been previously achieved through the adsorption by functionalized covalent organic frameworks (COFs). Among these COFs, thioether groups need to be deliberately introduced into the pores of COFs through either a bottom-up synthesis or post-synthesis strategy. Herein, we report a simple mercury removal strategy that used a stable alkynyl (-C[triple bond, length as m-dash]C-) based covalent organic framework (TP-EDDA COF) as an adsorbent for Hg(ii) removal. Sulfur vapor was first adsorbed by the TP-EDDA COF due to the van der Waals interaction between adsorbed sulfur and alkynyl groups. The Hg(ii) removal capability was then evaluated for the sulfur loaded TP-EDDA COF. Our results exhibited a good Hg(ii) removal performance for the sulfur loaded TP-EDDA COF. It was deduced that s⋯π interaction between sulfur atom and the alkynyl groups of the COF skeleton caused an increase in the electron density of sulfur and the electronegative sulfur atoms acted as a soft acid to accept soft-basic Hg(ii). This strategy provides a convenient platform for COFs to cope with environmental issues.

Annulation reaction of α-keto acids with cyclic or acyclic aliphatic ketones is reported herein to divergently access γ-hydroxy-butenolides and γ-alkylidene-butenolides depending on the amount of BF

The polymerization of α-olefins catalyzed by zirconium metallocene catalyst was systematically studied through experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Having achieved an agreement between theory and experiment, it was found that the effect of the catalyst ligand on the C[double bond, length as m-dash]C insertion reaction was significantly greater than that on the β-H elimination reaction. Therefore, the molecular weight of polymers can be increased by improving the activity of the C[double bond, length as m-dash]C insertion. In addition, in comparison with propylene, the chain length of α-olefins can directly affect the stereotacticity of polymerization products, owing to steric hindrance between the polymer chain and monomer.

This work describes a new nanosensor for the simple, rapid, portable, colorimetric analysis of mercury(II) (Hg2+) ions by combining the sensitive Tyndall effect (TE) of colloidal Au nanoparticles (AuNPs) with specific thymine–Hg2+–thymine (T–Hg2+–T) coordination chemistry for the first time. For the TE-inspired assay (TEA), in the presence of Hg2+ in a sample, the analyte can selectively mediate the hybridization of three types of flexible single-stranded DNAs (ssDNAs) to form stable rigid double-stranded DNAs (dsDNAs) via the T–Hg2+–T ligand interaction. Subsequent self-assembly of the dsDNAs with terminal thiol groups on the AuNPs' surfaces led to their “double” aggregation in addition to the lack of sufficient ssDNAs as the stabilizing molecules in a high-salt solution, resulting in a remarkably enhanced TE signal that positively relied on the Hg2+ level. The results demonstrated that such a TEA method enabled rapid naked-eye qualitative analysis of 625 nM Hg2+ within 10 min with an inexpensive laser pointer pen as an inexpensive handheld light source to generate the TE response. Making use of a smartphone for portable TE readout could further quantitatively detect the Hg2+ ions in a linear concentration range from 156 to 2500 nM with a limit of detection as low as 25 nM. Moreover, the developed equipment-free nanosensor was also used to analyze the Hg2+ ions in real samples including tap water, drinking water, and pond water, the obtained recoveries were within the range of 93.68 to 108.71%. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of using the AuNPs and functional nucleic acids to design a TE-based biosensor for the analysis of highly toxic heavy metal ions.

For guiding a novel integrated process of low-rank coal pyrolysis and gasification with char gasification gas as a heat carrier, this study investigated the effect of simulated coal gas from char gasification (SCGG) on rapid pyrolysis products of low rank coal from 550 to 700 °C in a downer pyrolyzer. Results indicated that the component of SCGG directly affected the distribution and composition of pyrolysis products. Compared with N2, SCGG facilitated the formation of tar below 600 °C. H2 in SCGG and that from water gas shift reaction (WGS: CO + H2O → CO2 + H2) increased the tar yield by reacting with solid-phase free radicals in coal and inhibiting the secondary reaction of gas-phase volatile radicals. Also, CO2 in SCGG raised the tar yield due to its promotion to coal cracking. When the pyrolysis temperature exceeded 600 °C, the reforming reactions of nascent tar with steam occurred, resulting in a reduced tar yield. SCGG could distinctly reduce the coke yield (coke-S) and pitch content in tar due to the inhibiting effect of H2 from SCGG and WGS on the polycondensation reactions of volatile radicals and reforming reactions of nascent tar. The chemical composition analysis of tar by GC × GC-MS demonstrated that compared with under N2, the contents of phenols, oxygenated compounds, and heterocyclic compounds in tar under SCGG were decreased while the content of aromatics was the opposite mainly due to hydrogenation and reforming reactions of nascent tar. Also, the H/C and O/C ratios of char under the action of SCGG were higher than those under N2 at the same temperature.

Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins/dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) and polychlorinated dibenzothiophenes/thianthrenes (PCDT/TAs) are two groups of dioxin-like compounds with oxygen and sulfur substitution, respectively. Chlorophenols (CPs) and chlorothiophenols (CTPs) are direct precursors in PCDD/F and PCDT/TA formation. The formation of chlorophenoxy radicals (CPRs) and chlorothiophenoxy radicals (CTPRs) from chlorophenols (CPs) and chlorothiophenols (CTPs) with O(3P) is an important initial step for the formation of PCDD/Fs and PCDT/TAs, respectively. In this paper, the formation of CPRs/CTPRs from the complete series reactions of 19 CP/CTP congeners with O(3P) was studied using the density functional theory (DFT) method. The rate constants of each reaction were calculated using canonical variational transition state (CVT) theory along with a small-curvature tunneling (SCT) contribution over a wide temperature range of 600–1200 K. The effect of the chlorine substitution pattern on the structural parameters, thermochemical properties and rate constants in both CPs and CTPs was discussed. This study shows that the reactions between CPs and O(3P) can be affected by the chlorine substitution at the para-position, and the reactions between CTPs and O(3P) are mostly influenced by both ortho-substitutions. The thiophenoxyl-hydrogen abstraction from CTPs by O(3P) is more likely to occur than the phenoxyl-hydrogen abstraction from CPs by O(3P). Comparison of the reactivity of CP/CTPs with O(3P) with our previous work on CP/CTPs with H and OH shows that the order for phenoxyl-hydrogen abstraction potential is CP + OH > CP + O(3P) > CP + H, and the order for thiophenoxyl-hydrogen abstraction potential is CTP + O(3P) > CTP + H > CTP + OH.

Transition metal carbides have been studied extensively as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), but they suffer from sluggish lithium reaction kinetics and large volume expansion. Herein, a hierarchical Mo2C/C nanosheet composite has been synthesized through a rational pyrolysis strategy, and evaluated as an anode material with enhanced lithium storage properties for LIBs. In the hierarchical Mo2C/C nanosheet composite, large numbers of Mo2C nanosheets with a thickness of 40–100 nm are uniformly anchored onto/into carbon nanosheet matrices. This unique hierarchical architecture can provide favorable ion and electron transport pathways and alleviate the volume change of Mo2C during cycling. As a consequence, the hierarchical Mo2C/C nanosheet composite exhibits high-performance lithium storage with a reversible capacity of up to 868.6 mA h g−1 after 300 cycles at a current density of 0.2 A g−1, as well as a high rate capacity of 541.8 mA h g−1 even at 5.0 A g−1. More importantly, this hierarchical composite demonstrates impressive cyclability with a capacity retention efficiency of 122.1% over 5000 successive cycles at 5.0 A g−1, which surpasses the cycling properties of most other Mo2C-based materials reported to date.

Hybrid organic–inorganic lead halide perovskite nanoparticles are promising candidates for optoelectronic applications. This investigation describes the structural and optical properties of MAxCs1−xPbBr3 mixed cation colloidal nanoparticles spanning the complete compositional range of Cs substitution. A monotonic progression in the cubic lattice parameter (a) with changes in the Cs+ content confirmed the formation of mixed cation materials. More importantly, time-resolved photoluminescence (TRPL) revealed the optimized 13 mol% Cs nanoparticle composition exhibits the longest charge carrier lifetime and enhancement in radiative pathways. This sample also showed the highest photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of ∼88% and displays ∼100% improvement in the PLQY of pure MAPbBr3 and CsPbBr3. Prototype LEDs fabricated from MA0.87Cs0.13PbBr3 were demonstrated.

In microorganisms and plants, aspartate kinase (AK) is the initial committed enzyme of the biosynthesis of the aspartate acid family amino acids and is inhibited by end products. In the paper, we mutated the key allosteric regulatory site A380 around the binding site of the Lys inhibitor in Corynebacterium pekinense AK (CpAK). A single-mutant A380C was obtained with 12.35-fold higher enzyme activity through high-throughput screening. On this basis, T379 as another key allosteric regulatory site was further modified, and the double-mutant T379N/A380C with 22.79-fold higher enzyme activity was obtained. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were used to investigate the mechanism of allosteric inhibition by Lys. The results indicated that the binding of Lys with CpAK resulted in conformational changes and a larger distance between the phosphorus atom of ATP and the oxygen atom of Asp, which was detrimental for the catalytic reaction. However, the mutation of allosteric sites opens the “switch” of allosteric regulation and can prevent the conformational transformation. Some key residues such as G168, R203, and D193 play an important role in maintaining the substrate binding with CpAK and further enhance the enzyme activity.

A NIR luminescent octanuclear Zn(II)–Nd(III) nanocluster 1 was constructed by the use of a salen-type Schiff base ligand. 1 exhibits a lanthanide luminescent response to Que with high sensitivity. The quenching constant of Que to the lanthanide emission is 2.6 × 104 M−1, and the detection limit of 1 to Que is 2.5 μM. The response behavior of 1 to Que is not affected by the existence of some potential interferents such as biomolecules.

The effect of external uniaxial strain on water dissociation on a reduced rutile TiO2(110) surface has been theoretically studied using first-principles calculations. We find that when the tensile strain along [10] is applied, the energy barrier of water dissociation substantially decreases with the increase of strain. In particular, water almost automatically dissociates when the strain is larger than 3%. Besides, the water dissociation mechanism changes from indirect to direct dissociation when the compressive strain is larger than 1.3% along [10] or 3% along [001]. The results strongly suggest that it is feasible to engineer the water dissociation on the reduced rutile TiO2(110) surface using external strain.

Polychlorinated phenoxathiins (PCPTs) are one group of dioxin-like compounds, which can be considered to be one-oxygen-substituted polychlorinated thianthrene (PCTA) compounds or one-sulfur-substituted polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxin (PCDD) compounds. Owing to their high toxicity and wide distribution, clarifying the formation and emission of PCPTs due to combustion and thermal processes can deepen our understanding of the dioxin formation mechanism and allow reduced-emission and dioxin-control strategies to be established. Chlorophenols (CPs) and chlorothiophenols (CTPs) are direct precursors in PCPT formation. In this paper, the homogeneous gas-phase formation mechanisms of PCPTs, as well as polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) and polychlorinated dibenzothiophenes (PCDTs), from the cross-condensation of 2-chlorophenoxy radicals (2-CPRs) and 2-chlorothiophenoxy radicals (2-CTPRs) under thermal and combustion conditions were investigated theoretically using a density functional theory (DFT) method. The reaction priorities and effects of water molecules on the formation mechanisms were discussed. The rate constants of crucial elementary steps were calculated from 600–1200 K. The acute and chronic toxicities of the main products were predicted at three trophic levels. This study shows that routes starting with oxygen–carbon condensation are favored over those starting with sulfur–carbon condensation for PCPT formation, and routes ending with Cl loss can occur more easily than those ending with H loss. Water molecules have a negative catalytic effect on CH–S H-transfer steps but a positive catalytic effect on CH–O H-transfer steps.

Cancer death rate remains high all over the world, scientists are paying increasing attention to meet the requirements for precise diagnosis and therapy. Therefore, early diagnosis and active treatment can effectively improve the five-year survival rate of patients. In recent years, gold-based nanomaterials have received increasing attention in medical fields due to their excellent biocompatibility, low toxicity and unique properties. In addition, because of the inherent nature of gold nanomaterials including for computed tomography (CT), fluorescence/optical imaging (FI/OI), surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy imaging (SERS), photoacoustic imaging (PAI) and photothermal therapy (PTT), various gold nanomaterials were developed as theranostic nanoplatforms. In this review, we summarized the latest developments of nanomaterials in imaging and combined therapy, and the prospects for the future application of gold-based theranostic nanoplatforms were also proposed.

A superconducting KBi2 sample was successfully prepared using a liquid ammonia (NH3) technique. The temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility (M/H) showed a superconducting transition temperature (Tc) as high as 3.6 K. In addition, the shielding fraction at 2.0 K was evaluated to be 87%, i.e., a bulk superconductor was realized using the above method. The Tc value was the same as that reported for the KBi2 sample prepared using a high-temperature annealing method. An X-ray diffraction pattern measured based on the synchrotron X-ray radiation was analyzed using the Rietveld method, with a lattice constant, a, of 9.5010(1) A under the space group of Fd[3 with combining macron]m (face-centered cubic, no. 227). The lattice constant and space group found for the KBi2 sample using a liquid NH3 technique were the same as those reported for KBi2 through a high-temperature annealing method. Thus, the superconducting behavior and crystal structure of the KBi2 sample obtained in this study are almost the same as those for the KBi2 sample reported previously. Strictly speaking, the magnetic behavior of the superconductivity was different from that of a KBi2 sample reported previously, i.e., the KBi2 sample prepared using a liquid NH3 technique was a type-II like superconductor, contrary to that prepared using a high-temperature annealing method, the reason for which is fully discussed. These results indicate that the liquid NH3 technique is effective and simple for the preparation of a superconducting KBi2. In addition, the topological nature of the superconductivity for KBi2 was not confirmed.

New antimicrobial agents are urgently needed to address the emergence of multi-drug resistant organisms, especially those active compounds with new mechanisms of action. Based on the molecular structures of the FtsZ inhibitors reported, a variety of thiazole-quinolinium derivatives with aliphatic amino and/or styrene substituents were synthesized from benzothiazolidine derivatives. In the present study, to further explore the antibacterial potential of thiazole-quinolinium derivatives, several Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria were treated with the newly modified compounds and the biological effects were studied in detail in order to understand the bactericidal action of the compounds. Our findings reveal that some of these derivatives possess good potent bactericidal activity as they can inhibit Gram-positive methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus and also some Gram-negative organisms and NDM-1 Escherichia coli. Furthermore, compounds 4a1–4a4 and 4b1–4b4 altered the morphology of bacterial cells and the cells displayed a more-elongated shape compared to the untreated cells. Biochemical assays showed that 4a4 and 4b4 stimulate FtsZ polymerization in bacterial cells, which eventually disrupts its dynamic assembly and Z-ring formation. The inhibition of this crucial step in bacterial cell division could potentially represent their main mechanism of antibacterial activity. Cytotoxicity assay and hemolysis assay suggested that 4a4 and 4b4 possess low cytotoxicity. In summary, these results further highlight the importance of 4a4 and 4b4 that could be developed as potent and effective bacteriostatic agents against multi-drug resistant bacteria.

The removal of low concentration PPCPs from water is a challenging issue. A graphene hydrogel with 3D networks shows great potential for accelerating eddy diffusion of low concentration PPCPs. Herein, to further promote its molecular diffusion, a graphene/TiO2 nanowires (GNW) hybrid structure was implanted into graphene hydrogel. The as-prepared rGO/GNW hydrogel exhibited significantly enhanced adsorption–photocatalytic performance and excellent stability for low concentration ethenzamide, a typical pharmaceutical pollutant in water, under vacuum ultraviolet (VUV), ultraviolet (UV), visible and near-infrared light irradiation. When the initial ethenzamide concentration was 500 ppb and catalyst dosage was 10 mg/150 mL, ethenzamide was completely removed in 3 min and the corresponding photocatalytic apparent rate constant was 2.20 times that by GNW, 4.09 times that by rGO/P25 and 4.31 times that by rGO/NW under VUV irradiation, respectively, and its removal rate attained 99.0% in 120 min and the corresponding photocatalytic apparent rate constant was 2.06 times that by GNW, 3.34 times that by rGO/P25 and 17.42 times that by rGO/NW under UV irradiation, respectively. The GNW hybrid structure in the hydrogel played a vital role in overcoming the mass transfer resistance of low concentration PPCPs. The as-prepared rGO/GNW hydrogel exhibits significant potential for the removal of low concentration PPCPs from water.

Post-synthetic modification has been the most powerful strategy for covalent organic frameworks (COFs) for their functionalization in many fields. This strategy is typically achieved through the quantitative reaction between existing reactive sites on the linkers (building units) and incoming functional groups. However, usage of linkages (bonds formed to construct COFs) for the post-synthetic modification still remains limited. Herein, we develop a new post-synthetic modification route that is based on the modification of linkages. With this strategy, the imine linkages of a two-dimensional (2D) COF, TFPPy–PyTTA–COF, have been transformed into amine linkages to give the amine-linked isostructure with retention of crystallinity and porosity. The subsequent aminolysis of the amine linkages with 1,3-propane sultone and further metathetical reaction with cobalt acetate [Co(OAc)2] enable the introduction of cobalt alkyl sulfonate to the one-dimensional (1D) channel walls of the COF. The resulting ionic COF with coupled Co2+ in the frameworks shows excellent catalytic activity and good recyclability towards the cycloaddition reactions of epoxides and CO2. This strategy is of interest as it opens a way to use linkage modification for exploring the potential of COFs for different applications.

Polo-like kinase 1 (PLK-1) is a protein kinase that plays a significant role in the initiation, maintenance, and completion of mitotic processes in the cell cycle. PLK-1 has been recorded to be over-expressed in various human cancers and is associated with poor prediction; thus it is an attractive target for anticancer therapy. Novel α-santalol functionalized chitosan nanoparticles were synthesized using the sol gel method and were assessed for their in vitro (MTT, apoptotic staining assays, and cell cycle analysis) and in vivo activities. α-Santalol loaded chitosan NPs inhibited the proliferation of triple negative breast cancer (MDA-MB-231) at an inhibitory concentration of (IC50) about 4.5 μg mL; meanwhile, in normal cells, no adverse effects were exhibited up to 100 μg mL−1. The findings also implicated a decreased expression of the anti-apoptotic protein, BCL-2 with PLK-1 and an increase in the expression of BAD, caspases and BAX. However, in in vivo studies, the treated animal group exhibited no aberrant effects in vital organs or blood parameters. Tumor growth was significantly inhibited after i.v. injection of α-santalol loaded chitosan NPs at a dose of 5 mg kg−1. Taken together, the α-santalol functionalized chitosan NPs hold great potential in biomedical applications, especially cancer theranostics, due to their versatile nature as well as diagnostics for clinical tumor biology.

A new one pot protocol has been developed for the reductive silylation of alkenyl methyl ethers using Et3Si–BPin and HSiEt3 with nickel(II) catalyst. Styrene type methyl ethers, multi-substituted vinyl methyl ethers, heterocycles and unconjugated vinyl ethers are all tolerated to form alkyl silanes. Mechanistic study reveals that it is a cascade of a C–O bond silylation and vinyl double bond hydrogenation process. Internal nucleophilic substitution or oxidative addition pathways were both acceptable for C–O bond cleavage. The acquired intermediate alkenyl silanes then proceeded through an unconventional reduction process thus providing alkyl silanes.

The purpose of the current study was to construct a β-cyclodextrin drug carrier for rubropunctatin to improve its water solubility and light stability for future cytotoxicity studies. The inclusion complexation behavior of rubropunctatin with β-cyclodextrin was investigated using FESEM, FT-IR and XRD. A molecular docking study was performed to elucidate the most probable inclusion structure. The inclusion complex could be completely dispersed in water and had a small size of 121.87 ± 2.13 nm (n = 3), a good PDI (0.320 ± 0.017), and an acceptable potential value of −27.7 ± 0.32 mV (n = 3). Furthermore, the stability of the rubropunctatin in water under light irradiation was found to be greatly enhanced after being encapsulated in cyclodextrin, and it exhibited a retention rate of over 70% vs. 10.17%. In addition, the cytotoxicity of the inclusion complex was evaluated by MTT assay and Annexin V-FITC/PI detection using cervical adenocarcinoma HeLa cells. The results showed that the inclusion complex had comparable toxicity compared to rubropunctatin solubilized with 0.4% DMSO. More importantly, the formation of the inclusion complex contributed greatly to the intensification of the bioavailability of rubropunctatin because the use of organic solvent was avoided.

A series of magnetically separable rGO/Fe3O4 nanocomposites with various amounts of graphene oxide were successfully prepared by a simple ultrasonication assisted precipitation combined with a solvothermal method and their catalytic activity was evaluated for the selective liquid phase oxidation of cyclohexene using hydrogen peroxide as a green oxidant. The prepared materials were characterized using XRD, FTIR, FESEM, TEM, HRTEM, BET/BJH, XPS and VSM analysis. The presence of well crystallized Fe3O4 as the active iron species was seen in the crystal studies of the nanocomposites. The electron microscopy analysis indicated the fine surface dispersion of spherical Fe3O4 nanoparticles on the thin surface layers of partially-reduced graphene oxide (rGO) nanosheets. The decoration of Fe3O4 nanospheres on thin rGO layers was clearly observable in all of the nanocomposites. The XPS analysis was performed to evaluate the chemical states of the elements present in the samples. The surface area of the nanocomposites was increased significantly by increasing the amount of GO and the pore structures were effectively tuned by the amount of rGO in the nanocomposites. The magnetic saturation values of the nanocomposites were found to be sufficient for their efficient magnetic separation. The catalytic activity results show that the cyclohexene conversion reached 75.3% with a highest 1,2-cyclohexane diol selectivity of 81% over 5% rGO incorporated nanocomposite using H2O2 as the oxidant and acetonitrile as the solvent at 70 °C for 6 h. The reaction conditions were further optimized by changing the variables and a possible reaction mechanism was proposed. The enhanced catalytic activity of the nanocomposites for cyclohexene oxidation could be attributed to the fast accomplishment of the Fe2+/Fe3+ redox cycle in the composites due the sacrificial role of rGO and its synergistic effect with Fe3O4, originating from the conjugated network of π-electrons in its surface structure. The rapid and easy separation of the magnetic nanocomposites from the reaction mixture using an external magnet makes the present catalysts highly efficient for the reaction. Moreover, the catalyst retained its activity for five repeated runs without any drastic drop in the reactant conversion and product selectivity.

Six new heptaketides, pleosporalins A–F (1–5, and 7), and a new heptaketide derivative, pleosporalin G (9), together with four biosynthetically related known compounds (6, 8, 10, and 11), were isolated from an endophytic fungus, Pleosporales sp. F46, found in the medicinal plant Mahonia fortunei. The structures and stereochemistry of these compounds were established by extensive spectroscopic analyses including LC-HRMS, NMR spectroscopy, optical rotations, ECD calculations, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The antifungal activities of isolated compounds 1–11 were investigated against Candida albicans, and their cytotoxic activities were evaluated against A549, SMMC-721, and MDA-MB-231 cancer cell lines. Compound 1 was active against C. albicans with an MIC80 of 128 μg mL−1, and compound 7 showed moderate cytotoxicity against MDA-MB-231 with an IC50 of 22.4 ± 1.1 μM. By comparing compounds 1 and 7 with structurally related metabolites, it was revealed that alterations to their C-1 or C-2 substitutions could significantly influence their antifungal or cytotoxic efficacies.

Perovskite quantum dot (PQD) light-emitting diodes (LEDs) have rapidly developed in the past several years due to the excellent optoelectronic properties of lead halide perovskites. However, PQD LEDs using graphene electrodes have not been reported despite their huge potential for applications in flexible displays and lighting sources. Herein, graphene was first used as the electrode of PQD LEDs. To overcome graphene's limitations such as hydrophobicity and graphene-induced film nonuniformity, the modification of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) with Triton X-100 and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) codoping was reported, which not only improved the wettability of the graphene surface and the sequent film quality, but also reduced the dissolution of the PQD solvent to the bottom poly[N,N′-bis(4-butylphenyl)-N,N′-bis(phenyl)-benzidine] and PEDOT:PSS. More importantly, the synergistic effect of Triton X-100 and DMSO altered the PEDOT:PSS morphology from a coiled structure to a nanofibril conductive network, sufficiently enhancing the electrical conductivity of PEDOT:PSS. With this modification strategy, green PQD LEDs with CH3NH3PbBr3 emission layers were successfully fabricated on graphene anodes, with 3.7- and 4.4-fold enhancements in luminance and current efficiency, respectively, compared to those of their counterparts without PEDOT:PSS modification. The film modification strategy and graphene-based PQD LEDs in this work are expected to shed light on the further design and manufacture of flexible highly efficient PQD display and lighting devices.

Small-sized lanthanide-doped nanoparticles (NPs) exhibiting superior near-infrared (NIR) luminescence properties are highly desired for bioimaging applications. Herein, Fe3+ ions are codoped in NaGdF4:Nd3+ nanocrystals via a simple coprecipitation method, which can simultaneously reduce the particle size and enhance the downconverting NIR luminescence of the NPs. The NIR luminescence intensity reaches the maximum for the obtained sub-5 nm NPs when the doping concentration of Fe3+ is tuned to 20 mol%, which is ∼1.7 times higher than that of the pristine 8.7 nm NPs without Fe3+ doping. After being modified with targeting molecules, the ultra-small NaGdF4:Nd3+,Fe3+ NPs were successfully applied as luminescent probes for targeted NIR imaging of tumors in biological tissues. Moreover, they also show great potential as a high contrast agent for T2-weighted MRI imaging.

In order to achieve efficient bioconversion of biomass-derived sugars, acid hydrolysate of sweet sorghum juice (SSJAH) containing abundant fermentable sugars was used for coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) fermentation by Rhodobacter sphaeroides CQ-09-1. The synthesis of CoQ10 was facilitated when the initial concentration of total sugar was 80.00 g L−1. And the highest CoQ10 titer was obtained when the pH and temperature were maintained at 7.00 and 30.00 °C, respectively. Moreover, corn steep powder (CSP) was proved to be an efficient nitrogen & salt supplement to SSJAH. Under the optimized conditions, the titer of CoQ10 reached 141.95 mg L−1 in a fed-batch fermentation. The CoQ10 titer reported was about two times higher than that obtained in the previous study using wild strains. This process introduces a potential way to produce CoQ10 using the concept of biorefinery, while making full use of sweet sorghum juice (SSJ).

The issue of multidrug resistant bacteria is a worldwide health threat. To develop new antibacterial agents with new mechanisms of action is thus an urgent request to address this antibiotic resistance crisis. In the present study, a new thiophenyl-pyrimidine derivative was prepared and utilized as an effective antibacterial agent against Gram-positive strains. In the tests against MRSA and VREs, the compound showed higher antibacterial potency than that of vancomycin and methicillin. The mode of action is probably attributed to the effective inhibition of FtsZ polymerization, GTPase activity, and bacterial cell division, which cause bactericidal effects. The compound could be a potential candidate for further development as an effective antibiotic to combat drug-resistant bacteria.

Herein, a coumarin fluorescent probe (Probe 1) was developed for the ratiometric detection of β-galactosidase (β-gal) activity. The detection range was 0–0.1 U mL−1 and 0.2–0.8 U mL−1, and the limit of detection (LOD) was 0.0054 U mL−1. Moreover, the luminous intensity of Probe 1 increased gradually with increase in β-gal activity. It could be observed under 254 nm UV irradiation by the naked eye. Furthermore, this method only required a small amount of sample (20 μL) and a short analytical time (30 min) for the detection of β-gal activity with a low LOD. Probe 1 was successfully used to detect β-gal activity in real fruit samples, and can be applied to the quantitative and qualitative detection of β-gal activity.
