Abstract

Background: Melanoma is the most common malignancy of skin cancer. Small nucleolar RNA host gene 5 (SNHG5), a long non-coding RNA (lncRNA), has been demonstrated to be abnormally expressed in multiple malignances. However, the roles and molecular mechanisms of SNHG5 in melanoma progression have not been well identified. Methods: RT-qPCR assays were used to detect the expression patterns of SNHG5 and microRNA-155 (miR-155). Cell proliferation was assessed using 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) and colony formation assays. Cell apoptosis rate was measured by flow cytometry via double-staining of fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC)-labeled annexin V (Annexin V-FITC) and propidium iodide (PI). The interaction between SNHG5 and miR-155 was validated using bioinformatics analysis, subcellular fraction assay, luciferase assay and RNA immunoprecipitation (RIP) assay. A mouse model of melanoma was established to further verify the effect of SNHG5 on tumor growth in vivo. Results: SNHG5 expression was upregulated in melanoma tumor tissues and cell lines. Moreover, higher SNHG5 expression was associated with advanced pathogenic status and poor prognosis. Functional analysis showed that SNHG5 knockdown suppressed proliferation and facilitated apoptosis in melanoma cells. Mechanical exploration revealed that SNHG5 acted as a molecular sponge of miR-155 in melanoma cells. Restoration experiments delineated that miR-155 down-regulation partly abrogated SNHG5-knockdown-mediated anti-proliferation and pro-apoptosis effect in melanoma cells. In vivo assays further demonstrated that SNHG5 depletion hindered tumor growth through up-regulating miR-155 expression. Conclusion: SNHG5 promoted the development of melanoma by sponging miR-155 in vitro and in vivo, implying the important implication of lncRNAs in melanoma progression and providing a potential therapeutic target for melanoma.

Abstract

Graphene oxide–Al13 (GO–Al13) composites were synthesized by a hydrolysis method on the basis of graphite oxide and were characterized by XRD, FT-IR and SEM. The adsorption of Cd2+ onto the GO–Al13 composite was investigated as a function of pH, temperature and adsorbent dose. Langmuir and Freundlich models were employed to describe the adsorption equilibrium. The adsorption kinetic was investigated by the pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order and the intraparticle diffusion models. The results showed that the GO–Al13 composite has excellent adsorption capacity, and the Cd2+ removal rate could reach 98.92% at the optimum conditions. The adsorption isotherm fitted the Langmuir model well and the adsorption process was found to fit the pseudo-second-order rate equation. Also, the thermodynamic parameters including free energy (ΔG⊖), enthalpy (ΔH⊖) and entropy (ΔS⊖) of adsorption were calculated. These experimental data suggested that the adsorption of Cd2+ on GO–Al13 composite was an endothermic and spontaneous process.

In this work, we report a straightforward and green method to prepare fibrous self-assembled silver-based coatings on polypropylene surfaces under physiological conditions. The silver coatings exhibited excellent antibacterial properties against both gram-negative E. coli and gram-positive bacteria S. aureus.

37. Potential outstanding physical properties of novel black arsenic phosphorus As 0.25 P 0.75 /As 0.75 P 0.25 phases: a first-principles investigation.

Abstract

Black arsenic phosphorus As 0.5 P 0.5 has been studied as an excellent candidate for electronic and optoelectronic applications. At the same time, the physical properties of As x P 1- x alloys with other compositions were not investigated. In this work, we design seven As 0.25 P 0.75 (P-I and P-II)/As 0.75 P 0.25 (As-(I, II, III, IV and V)) phases with molecular dynamics stability. First principles calculations are used to study their electronic structures under strain as well as their carrier mobilities. By calculating Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof (PBE) electronic bands, we reveal that these materials are direct-gap semiconductors similar to black phosphorus except for the As-IV phase. It is also found that the carrier mobility in the P-I and As-V phases can reach 10 4 cm 2 V -1 s -1 . The electronic structures of the P-I, As-IV and As-V phases under strain are studied. Finally, we design caloritronic devices based on armchair and zigzag nanoribbons. The value of the Seebeck coefficient of the armchair and zigzag devices made from the P-II phases are found to be as high as 2507 and 2005 μW K -1 at 300 K. The thermal properties of the arsenic phosphorus phases under consideration are further studied by calculating their thermoelectric figure of merit, ZT values. These values are as high as 10.88 for the armchair devices based on the As-III phase and 4.59 for the zigzag devices based on the As-V phase at room temperature, and 15 and 7.16 at 600 K, respectively. The obtained results demonstrate that the As 0.25 P 0.75 /As 0.75 P 0.25 phases studied here can be regarded as potential candidates for thermoelectric and electronic device applications., Competing Interests: There are no conflicts to declare., (This journal is © The Royal Society of Chemistry.)

Abstract

Self-assembly of block copolymers is a significant area of polymer science. The self-assembly of completely water-soluble block copolymers is of particular interest, albeit a challenging task. In the present work the self-assembly of a linear-brush architecture block copolymer, namely poly( N -vinylpyrrolidone)- b -poly(oligoethylene glycol methacrylate) (PVP- b -POEGMA), in water is studied. Moreover, the assembled structures are crosslinked via α-CD host/guest complexation in a supramolecular way. The crosslinking shifts the equilibrium toward aggregate formation without switching off the dynamic equilibrium of double hydrophilic block copolymer (DHBC). As a consequence, the self-assembly efficiency is improved without extinguishing the unique DHBC self-assembly behavior. In addition, decrosslinking could be induced without a change in concentration by adding a competing complexation agent for α-CD.
